I'm a big fan of the manga and I hope they can pull this movie off. I worry though that they won't be able to do the manga the full justice it deserves, it's alot to cram into a few hours. Also they'll need some good special effects to make the Shinigami believable.

She is not Misa. XD She is Naomi Misora, clumped together with all the "bad" guys(Misa will be Erika Toda). I still don't like the idea of Tatsuya Fujiwara as Light but I'll hold my thoughts till I see it.

Well I'll certainly try and see it, hopefully the shinigami look good.
Here's a link to the official website http://wwws.warnerbros.co.jp/deathnote/
Any direct links to pictures ? The official site is a pain to navigate.
This movie looks so good!!
It will probably never be in American theaters, but maybe on DVD... especially since the Red Hot Chili Peppers are doing its theme song... ^_^

Erika Toda, oh God that makes my day. She was really cute in Nobuta wo Produce and really nailed the part. Looking forward to it!

Me too, I liked her much in Nobuta wo produce so I'm excited about how she will perform. :)

Nice website, don't remember a guy being in the room last time I saw it. Wish I could read it :(.
Super Secret Deathnote Animation shhh...keep it under wraps (http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/307724):heh:
I'm not quite sure if I'm happy about the choice of actor of Light\Raito and L. Tatsuya Fujiwara is a very talented actor and uber-cute... That's the problem for me, his too cute as Raito in my taste. I think a more masculine actor would fit better.
And Kenichi Matsuyama.... He hasn't the looks in my opinion. However, I haven't seen to much of him so I won't judge him just yet. Anyway, I'm looking soo forward to this movie! :D I love Death Note!

I heard Red Hot Chili Peppers were doinga song for it? Was I so messed up when I read that? LOL
I really like the way the way L looks so far! :D But Light.... he's a good actor, but he doesn't look like Light at all and lacks the creepy not-so-Japanese face and long hair. I don't really like how they made Misa not have blonde hair, either... the dumb blonde look fit her personality and made her stand out. I wonder how they'll do the shinigami?
Though the actors are all awesome so this should be great! So many good actors from so many good things! Battle Royale, Shinsengumi, Nobuta o Produce, Prince of Tennis Musicals.... :D

Yeah, the song "Dani California" by Red Hot Chili Peppers will be this movie's theme. The sound of the music fits the movie pretty well, but the lyrics.... they don't fit Death Note at ALL... :uhoh:

Well, if they're going to put more focus on Misa than in the actual manga, it works out (the song, that is). I've listened to the song, and it gives an impression of a very good "ending credit rolling" title. If that wasn't the basis of why they selected the song, then I'm lost as to why they went with it besides the stereotypical "wow, I think this is a pretty cool English song" reasoning.
The song itself is a continuation of a "saga", per se, of the RHCP (i.e. the story of Dani California, a ficticious woman who was first created in the song "By the Way", mentioned in "Californiacation", and continued in greater depth here; based on an amalgamation of the various women Anthony Kiedis, the lead singer and lyricist, dated in the past).

6/17/2006 I WANT TO GO TO JAPAN TO WATCH IT.........
6/17/2006 I WANT TO GO TO JAPAN TO WATCH IT.........
<----------- (see my current location)
I just watched it! While I had read only a tiny bit of the Death Note manga (as I was
trying to read it in Japanese and the Japanese used is a bit complicated -- vocabulary-wise
at least), so I knew the story a little. I can say the movie turned out pretty well!
They did change quite a few plot elements though like:
- In the manga Raito is in high school when he finds the Death Note. In the movie he's already in university.
- In the manga he killed pages full of people before meeting Ryuka. But in the movie it's just 2.
... and I could go on for a bit longer ...
Another guy who was watching it with me told me there are even bigger plot elements
(especially concerning Naomi) they changed in the movie. But I wouldn't know -- I haven't
even read up to the part where "Lind L. Taylor" reveals himself in the manga yet.
All in all while it had a few slow moments (IMHO), it's a pretty good movie which I can
recommend to everyone. Though you'd better be pretty fluent in Japanese -- I'm not
and that was a bit of a problem especially in the beginning of the movie when a few things
happen in quick succession. Later on with more casual conversations I had less trouble.
For someone who hadn't read up until that far there were a few good plot twists in
the movie, especially near the end, where you think something has gone very wrong for Raito,
but the real reasons turn out to be very, very different (can't tell anymore without using
spoiler tags).
Ryuka looked pretty cool, though IMHO he lacked a bit in the "kinametics" (sp?) department.
Especially in the beginning his movements seemed pretty fake and not well done. Later
on I noticed this less and less though.
And L was brilliant btw -- easily the coolest character of the movie.
The ending btw leaves a lot of room for a sequel -- and indeed at the end of the credits
they announced the sequel (subtitle "The Last Name") would be released in November
(though alas, I won't be in Japan anymore by that time).
Anyway... just wanted to share my experience :)
(And to boast some more -- I also saw the PoT movie recently [which sucked I'm afraid]
and I will be seeing Brave Story and probably Gedo Senki before I leave. I love Japan :))
I think I'll watch it very soon. Thanks GHDpro you made me feel like it. :D
Actually I watched "Inside Man" instead, today. (Yup, monday is cheaper for guys, here... :heh: )
well i can't speak more than greetings and about 50 words past that yet but i will be in my hotel in Shibuya friday by 6 with no plans until Saturday at noon, i may just go see this because i've really been looknig forward to it. And honestly it will make it that much better when i finally get the R2 (assuming it's gonna have Eng subs) because there is nothing like an action movie in on the big screen.AT least until i got a spare 10 grand to build a home theater :D
Not surprising... the Death Note movie was the #1 movie in Japanese theaters over the weekend. :D ( according to this (http://www.cinemanavi.co.jp/english/weekend.html) site's tracking of box office sales) I wonder if it's as good as the hype makes it seem? Can't wait for a DVD release.
Speaking of DVD releases: how long do Japanese movies usually run in theaters? And how much time is there usually between theatrical debut and DVD release (in Japan)?
Shinobi was realeased at the begining of February. wasn't it a summer blockbuster last year?
I've never looked into release schedules since i opnly order a few R2 movies a year.
Well, the Saikano live action movie was in theaters in January 2006 and the DVD was just released today. Well, June 21 but today is the 21st in Japan.
Well, the Saikano live action movie was in theaters in January 2006 and the DVD was just released today. Well, June 21 but today is the 21st in Japan.
Hm, about a 5 month wait then... *weep*
Though I have a feeling the Death Note movie may spread to theaters outside of Japan... (I remember seeing a map of the world in Raito's room when the official site first opened, but you could only look at it close up and there was no info on it yet...)
This movie looks so good!!

Well, that song isn't made for DN, they are using it as that, which makes no sense at all since Death Note isn't about rock, the Dani person, America, etc. I think they are using it just because it sounds cool, which is definitely not an indicator of a good movie.
And the eyeliner on L in the picture looks really bad...it looks fake and cos-play-ey. They could've atleast made it a bit more natural. T_T

All the reader reviews seem to point that it's a good movie. Misa Misa so cute, the black hair kind of put me down though.

There is alot I don't like about the live action movie...like how misa has black hair for some reason. I dunno it just doesn't seem like its going to measure up to the manga....The only reason why I am seeing it is to see L...cause he seems like the one most like his character.
Eh...maybe I am just too big of a DN fan...nothing is good enough unless you grab the people from the manga...lol.
I saw it wednesday and found it quite cool. The shinigami looks great, L too. Light is sort of uninteresting, compared to the manga, but it's OK. Misa is cute anyways. The plot has changed, it got more simple, but I wasn't expecting much from a live action movie, so...
On the whole, I am happy I watched it. Can't wait for what's to come, though I won't be in Japan in November... :upset:
Damn......looks like I gotta wait till the movie is released on DVD then. I sometimes really wish that I'm in Japan right now:heh:
Edit: Nvm
Anyway, can someone give a quick run-down of the movie for us who are living in america and have read the manga? I'm interested in seeing how everything translated on the big screen.
To Shuin4, I tink Garten did a good rundown of the movie. U can read his blog at
http://www.designchronicle.com/memento/
Anyway, the plot apparently deviates a bit frm the manga itself. With Raito havin a gf to start with and somehow some of the scenes haf changed compared to the manga. Sorry to say that, as a fan of Raito sama ( L oso - k, i like all genius ), I dun really like the part that they actually portray Raito as someone who is so evil so soon aka plotting his own gf's death. Cos' to me, there shld be a transition of how he turns to the evil side. I dun believe that he is that evil to start with. (juz cos of his incident with the yakuza???)
But, i haf to admit that movie as it is, due to certain time constraint, there is not enuff time to depict everything or shld i say "as accordin to the manga". It is still a good movie and all I can hope is a better part 2. :D Actually, I have higher hope for the anime oso. :p
BTW, sorry to all Fujiwara Tatsuya's fans. But, I m still not able to c him portraying as Raito sama. He, is to me, lacking of certain element such as the "confidence and evil look" ;)
When does the DVD come out in Japan?
based on things like how long recent japanese summer blockbusters take i would say december to february sometime.
i just pray it comes pre-subtitled like shinobi did. even if most will pirate it anyway.
It's weird that there's no news about that on the official site by now.

I've only read the blog linked to above, and I'm quite pleased by what I've read. At the rate they're going, it sounds like the 2nd movie will end about where the manga (imho) went from great to crap. Which must mean they're doing an original ending, and if the ending's good the movies stand a terrific chance of becoming better than the source material.
I agree, the manga right now is really boring with all the politics. :eyespin: It's always good to see new stuff.

Just saw the movie in the cinema today, I have to say it was a very good adaptation. In fact, it did a better job than the manga in conveying the plot, the manga tends to get a bit long-winded with its explanations.
Light started out as a college student studying law instead of a high school student.
Shiori, Light's girlfriend, is only in the movie.
Movie Light tends to waste a lot of DN paper space. At this rate, he'll use up the DN before he even seriously gets started. (Not to worry, as the manga mentioned one rule that, as long as Light doesn't forfeit ownership, the DN will never run out of pages. ) Manga Light fills up every inch with as many names as possible. lol
Instead of in his room, in the movie Ryuuk appears in front of Light in the streets where he first picked up the DN. Ryuuk's CG appearance is flawless.
In the manga, Watari is a European man.
Live TV show-down between Kira and L (with Lind L Tailor as sacrifice) sets the battle between these two.
Raye Penber's name is changed to Raye Iwamatsu. How Light killed him and the other FBI agents are the same in both the movie and manga.
Of the detectives that decided to remain behind with Light's dad, the chief investigator, there were no females in the manga. The female detective Sanami is added, though I don't know what for, she barely gets any lines. Matsuda (the young, clumsy one) tends to stand out more.
L is just as everyone has seen him in the manga, having a sweet tooth, and sits funnily, not to mention being the eccentric genius.
Misa makes a brief appearance in this movie, first in the bus commercial, and then in the TV programme. By the end of this movie, she obtains the second DN, this would bring her to Light in the second movie.
The art gallery climax is completely original.
In the manga, Naomi Misora didn't know Light was Kira yet, this allows Kira time to figure out her real name and make her kill herself quietly.
In the movie, she directly accuses Light of being Kira, then she kidnaps Shori and confronts Light at the art gallery, thinking she could help L by making Light kill her under camera surveillance. Amidst the confusion, Shiori attempts to escapes and was killed, overcome with madness, Naomi shoots herself as well. Little did she know her true name was already figured out by Light and every one of her action was being controlled up to her death. I personally find this scene well executed, and Naomi at least went with a bang (literally) instead of dying ignominously.
This scene also revealed Light's ruthless manipulative nature (suits his character well) as he also orchestrated Shiori's death, making everyone think that Light was innocent. Of course, L wasn't easily fooled.
Light and L's first meeting sets the tone for the second movie.
I wonder if they would use an original ending for the second movie, as the Cat and Mouse game between Light and L intensifies, with Misa in the fray as well. Surly they can't omit Rem?
By the way, here's a spoof Death Note clip. It shows Jackie Chan getting drunk in a concert and talking and singing incoherently, pissing off the fans. As a result, Light kills him off with his DN. lol

The trailer for DN movie 2 is out.

It will be the final battle between Raito and L sama. Hiaz, envy those pple living in HongKong to be able to watch the first movie so fast. As for me, I still got to wait till 19Oct for the movie to arrive here in Singapore. :(

Just watched it a few hours ago. My country only started airing the movie yesterday, but the official release of the movie is supposed to be on the 19th of October. I thought the movie was great and all....at least its not that predictable for those who'd read the manga. Not sure whether its supposed to be funny but...those people watching the movie with me were laughing when they see L and Ryuk's weird eating habits.

I tink cos' those pple r not the manga readers, tt's why they find it pretty amusing abt their eating habits. Part 2 will clock at a long 2 hour 20 min. Slightly longer than the 2 hour 5 min of the first.
Just in from watching it... It wasn't bad, though I guess some parts were a little too slow for comfort. However, generally, it was okay - I guess it's mostly because the premise itself is fine. It was a bit confusing at first because they had shifted everything and changed the Naomi Misora thing a bit, but generally it was still fun watching Light come up with those elaborate plans like his contact with Ray.
Probably the biggest nitpick for now is that Light's actor doesn't look the part at all. He's not a bad actor per se but he looks too old sometimes, and there was also something off that I couldn't really pin down. Maybe he just didn't feel natural.
On the other hand, I thought L was quite fine, and the fangirls in the audience were more than 10000x pleased with him .

Movie's Light is suppose to a university student in his late teens, early 20's here. Still I still find his face kinda too round for the role of Light.
But maybe because I have read the manga before.....Light ,the megalomaniac, having a girlfriend feels kinda wrong. In the manga, he is too self important to be involve in a relationship if it does not serve a purpose. So what was he doing with Shiori before he got the DN ?
On the other hand, I thought L was quite fine, and the fangirls in the audience were more than 10000x pleased with him .
L is easy to do. He is, afterall, very much older than Light in the manga and you can call him an eccentric genius. So just get any good young actor to act how he suppose to act and there you have it.
Well, I thought he looked too old to be a university student even (although there are people like that, I never imagined Raito to look like that) And I agree about the roundness. I guess they couldn't find anyone who looked like Raito and could act well enough too... If I'm not wrong I think I saw Eiji Wentz as one of the broadcasters.
The theatre I went to had hardly anyone in it - probably about 15-20 people in total? But everyone laughed at Ryuk's antics. The apple bit was really cute :) Oh, and at Matsuda as well! Watching this reminded me how I always like characters like that. Him just suddenly finishing sentences for others in a burst of genius...
Dear L, the shinigami likes to... eat apples!!
Thanks God tt I am not the only one that is unpleased with the Movie's Raito actor. Seriously, I don't really see how he fits inside the role. He juz dun look any "Raito-ness" to me. And yeah! at his roundness... =\ Again, no offence to his fans. Juz personal opinion. Hehz :P
Yup Yup, I agree that many will like L actor instead. He looks pretty juz right for the char.
I just watched the movie yesterday and I must say I'm really disappointed with Light's actor. In the manga, Light often sharpen his eyes to give us the evil and scheming look, which I find cool. But i guess it isn't possible in real life. Also, his face just doesn't tell me he is a genius lol. They did not emphasise on Light's ridiculously high IQ as much as in the manga, which is disappointing too lol.

Mm, I still want to see Mello and Near get live-action'd. They could probably get away with compressing the second arc into one movie if they chose to do so, though.

Hmm... if they r goin to compress Mello and Near into the second movie, then it will seem to be very rushed out. Anyway, there is still no news whether is there goin to be DN 3 or sth?? Perhaps DN 2 will haf an orginal ending, different from the manga cos' the producers do not wish to continue the story anymore?? Anyway, to me, Raito vs L is the best and most interesting arc inside the manga. :heh:

Nah, I meant a hypothetical third movie. The second movie is clearly just meant to wrap up the Light/L stuff... and you're right, that's the way it should be.
Actually I preferred Death Note upto the wits against wits battle between Light and L.
This first section really gripped me from the start till L's death. Afterwhich, I kinda lost interest and just wanted to know how Light die. So even if there is ever a DN3 - introducing Mello and Near, I don't think I would follow. I would find it so... so... "Lord of the Ring"gy.

I think either L or Light (or heck, both) will be the last name(s) written into the Death Note, because only the letter 'L' is capitalized in the movie title, and on the official posters, the letter 'L' is printed in the same font as 'L' on his laptop screen. Looks like the movie will follow parts of the Misa/Shinigami's Eyes arc up to Misa getting caught, but the 3rd Kira is probably not going to be the Yotsuba arc, since that'd be really hard to fit into a movie. Takada Kiyomi is showing up in the movie... I wonder what she'll do. Hooray for an alternate ending~

Ah how i wish i get a theatre with that little people. GV tampines was filled to the brim when I saw it. I can for most people I can see that they will find the beginning of the movie quite boring. The old man beside actually snored. :heh: It is only when the battle begin did the audience really got captured. And yup everyone laughed at the apple parts. Well, i dont know whether the rest found L's antics cool though, they were laughing at L's eating habits most of the time.
As someone that had only watched the anime till ep 4, I find the movie does lack quite a number of details which would have made the movie a lot better. The insert of the necessary love interest instead of some random girl actually had quite a effect. I agree that the movie L really gave the true feeling of what L should be. Still I prefer the anime to the movie. Maybe if the light actor was a little more like light, it would have been better.

Just saw the Director's Cut on TV.
Good thing I got to see the first movie prior to the premiering of the second, since I missed it when it was playing in Japan, and the anime got me interested in seeing it.
Perhaps Fujiwara Tatsuya doesn't fit the image of Light, but he is a very good actor (loved his Okita Souji in Shinsengumi). Ryuk is scarier in the movie, his voice in movie and anime both played by Nakamura Shidou, probably making him the most consistent character.
The movie further enhances my interest in the anime, not to mention part two of the movie. Can't wait until November 3rd.

I also caught the TV broadcast, I'll have to catch the second movie next week.
It seems like a simplified version of the manga, simple enough for someone who hasn't read it, but still a bit too wordy. I would say that this first part didn't show much on how intelligent L really is, since in the manga L is always analyzing the situations with his own mind. Of course, there are no thought bubbles in the movie, and so movie L just sits there and eats tons of sweets. At least he redeems himself in the ending.
That ending part was awesome, as if L is mocking Kira with his action, while Light (Kira) stares at him with a straight face, getting the hidden meaning... signifying their cat-and-mouse game part 2 begins there!!!
L introduced himself to Light... and he's eating a bag of chips! Remember that Light used the LCD-inside-the-chips to kill some people. So L still suspects Light, making his latest DN fiasco (even sacrificing his GF) worthless. While some may say that Light has the upper hand throughout the movie, L literally turned the tables with that mere act! Awesomeness!
After the movie there's a sneak peak for Death Note: the Last name, along with some revealing scenes. The Misa arc seems intact, but probably like the the first movie, I seem to see scenes where another crazy woman makes a hostage situation. Again the climax may be changed... but I expect the outcome to be the same:
L will still be dead. Who knows if Light would live after that, but I won't bet on another set of movies, with that kind of title (it's the 'Last' name after all). Hope I'm wrong though.
anyone know if there's fansubs for the movies?
No. It was just aired. Can someone from japan can confirm that this was aired 810p? Since lower quality raw has HiVISION logo and I found 1440x810 raw? Or is it oversize?

Yep, it's gonna be shown simultaneously at both Japan and HK, and I think Taiwan as well, on November 3rd.
Going to be looking forward to this movie this weekend.

Its cool that they did Ryuk the old fashion way (i.e. puppetry with limited CG). But I wish they didnt alter the story line and made Light a college student. Thats one of the great things about the series, watching and being amazed at how freakisly smart this high school student is.
Yeah... but it's not as if anime in general isn't already jam-packed with freakishly smart and/or talented kids and high school students. :heh:

Question to those who saw the movie:
What was the deal with those gangstars in a bar right before Raito found the death note?
(I'm sorry if I'll make somebody repeat themselves, but I'm not in the mood to check all 100 posts for an answer)
I can only understand basic japanese & with all that gigly jiberish I didin't get a thing. Why did Raito later threw out some book? Can somebody please enLighten me.
Thankful :)
PS: Ryuk really scares me in the movie!!! :upset:

Can somebody please enLighten me.Light recognized one of the gangsters as Shibuimaru Takuo, a criminal, but he was powerless against them in the bar. In his anger, Light threw a copy of the classic Japanese law book into trash because he very well could've been beaten up or robbed on the spot without any way for justice to step in.
Yeah Ryuk is a little of freaky in the movie than in theshow but thats whats great about it. Plus I think the death gods in Death Note are so much better then the more kid friendly ones in Bleach. Hey are the voice actors the same for Ryuk and L. in the movie and the anime?

Ryuk - Shidou Nakamura (anime)
L - Kappei Yamaguchi (anime)
Ryuk - Shido Nakamura (movie)
L - Ken'ichi Matsuyama (movie)
if I'm not mistaken
My brilian conclusion... Yes & no
Thank you. Guess everyone sounds the same with L.'s voice changer.
I've just downloaded the RAW and watched it to the part where they are on the bus. Can't wait for one of the groups to sub this movie.
GV tampines was filled to the brim when I saw it.
I went to GV Plaza Singapura (the halls there are small) and nearly had the whole cinema to myself and my friends.
I liked how to movie went. The busjacking scene was a good remake, Ray Penbar looked good with a beard, the train scene was also really cool. Ingenious, how Righto could manipulate seats on the train to be empty so that the ex-convict and Ray could sit together, and within Light's view.
But what I liked the best was the casting for Misa. She's really cute, I can't wait for the next movie.
Jiang Liang, you forgot something. The chips L had at teh end were consomme flavour, Light's favourite, and the flavour of the chips he used to store the TV in.
You're very right, Usagi. They sounded exactly alike.

Here is a brief synopsis of the second movie. It would help if you have read the manga, as I make a lot of references to it.
The movie begins with where the first one left off, with Misa obtaining the second DN and meeting the second shinigami, Rem.
We are then shown the funeral of Light's girlfriend, whose death was staged by Light to make people sympathize with him.
Light is then brought to L's underground investigative HQ, where when playing a game of chess, L reveals he still suspects Light, despite all that's happened.
The movie then closely follows the manga in introducing the "second Kira". Misa sends a tape announcing that she wishes to meet Kira, and gives a demonstration of her powers by killing people live on TV. The difference this time is that all this happened while there was a anniversary party in front of the TV station, where Sayu, Light's sister was there as well.
After the commotion with Light's dad coming to the rescue and forcing the transmission to be terminated, Light came to pick up a devastated Sayu. Unbeknownst to him, Misa, who's a celebrity herself in the TV station, happens to see Light, and notices that she could not see Light's lifespan, she now knows he's the owner of the DN - Kira.
As in the manga, Misa pays Light a visit, gives Light her DN. She then visits Light at college, and bumps into L, where she figures out his name, but L had her captured at once. Rem erases Misa's memories of the DN and urges Light to rescue Misa.
In the manga, Rem, under Light's instruction, gives the DN to Higuchi, a greedy corporate executive. In the movie, Higuchi's role is taken over by Takada Kiyomi, a junior reporter who's resentful that she isn't the anchorwoman. (In the manga, Kiyomi was Light's classmate in college. )
Upon receiving the DN, she decides to do more coverage on Kira in a positive way, this allows her career to elevate. She also kills off the current anchorwoman who only got to her position by sleeping with the producer along the way to becoming the new anchorwoman. Yet by making this petty revenge and the increase in media coverages concerning Kira, both L and Light (who has temporarily lost his memory as he relinquishes control of the DN for now) are able to track her down very quickly.
Upon recovering the DN and its memories and killing off Kiyomi, Light asks Misa to recover the other DN which he has buried in a nearby forest, and asks her to begin killing criminals again.
This is where the ending deviates from the manga.
L suspects Misa right away, and has Watari bring Misa over. At the same time, he says he wanted to test the (fake) 13 day rule, and arranges for Light's dad to bring the DN they have with them to test it on death row prisoners.
After sending everyone else away, it's just L and Light left in the HQ. L says he knows Misa would bring her DN along as she has forgotten L's name and wouldn't want to miss this chance to write down his name this time.
Rem realizes Light is forcing her to save Misa. She disappears behind the wall and reluctantly begins to write down some names. Rem slowly disintegrates to dust, but before doing so, she destroys her own DN in a burst of blue flames as she did not want Light to obtain her DN. (Unlike in the manga, where Light retrieved her DN from her ashes. )
L collapses and goes into a spasm, he realizes Light is really Kira, but says it's too late and closes his eyes. Misa exits the elevator - while witnessing Watari dying of a heart attack - and meets Light, who declares that they have won.
Or have they?
Misa gives Light her DN, and the first thing Light does is write down his father's name - to the shock of Misa. Light has his father hand over the DN to him before dying of a heart attack. He says sacrifices needs to be made if a new world is to be born.
Light's father returns on cue and carries the briefcase containing the DN. Light says how sorry he is and that he has always respected his dad, but says what he did is necessary for the world. Light's father remained silent, and opens the briefcase - to show there's nothing inside.
The rest of the investigative team appears and has Light at gunpoint while Misa is handcuffed. Light is baffled, only to be confronted by none other than......L, who is STILL well and alive.
After the first day when Misa has recovered her DN, L confirms the deaths of the criminals and has locked down Misa as his prime suspect. He secretly has Misa's DN exchanged for a fake one. L has the real DN with him.
How can he still be alive? There's a rule in the DN that says once a person's cause of death is written, it cannot be changed. So L decides to put his own life on the line and wrote his own name down (though the audience still could not see his real name), where he will "die peacefully 23 days from now". As he has already written his own death, what Rem wrote on her DN would not be applicable on L, and thus L is guaranteed to live for another 20 days. Though L is saddened that he could not protect Watari.
He convinces Light's dad to take part in this set-up, Light's dad was shocked at L's determination to go so far, and in the end agreed. Light's dad is saddened to see his son fall to such depths, and he has no choice but to have him arrested. Light tries to write some names on the DN paper inside his hidden watch compartment (I'd like to get my hands on such a watch), but is shot by Matsuda the marksman.
As a last resort, he urges Ryuk to kill everyone in return for showing Ryuk even more interesting stuff, but Ryuk isn't buying that, and writes Light's name down. Light writhes in pain as he dies in the arms of his father, who came rushing to him, while Misa was devastated, falling on the ground sobbing.
L says he would burn the remaining DN, much to the disappointment of Ryuk, who then goes home.
20 days later:
Interpol says they did not believe anything about the DN, and has decided that this matter has come to a close and they will leave it as that.
L sits alone in the HQ eating candy, Light's dad comes in and commends L for his sacrifice. He then salutes L and leaves. L then "dies peacefully", at his side is a photo of the late Watari.
One year later:
Yagami's mom and sister Sayu both lament at the death of Light one year ago. As it's snowing outside, Sayu, carrying an umbrella, goes to the station to pick her dad up. She says it's been a year since Kira "disappeared", and that the world has gone back to the way it's been. But she's not disappointed, as she believed that it was Kira that killed her brother, and that his death was not in vain as he had managed to bring Kira down before dying. Light's dad hopes that she would never know the truth.
The final scene shows Misa, who lost all her memories concerning the DN and thus could not be prosecuted, mourning for Light's death a year ago. She senses that she's missing something important, but could not remember what it was. The camera then pans outside the window on Tokyo Tower, where Ryuk is seen flying towards the audience, laughing away.
While they incorporated parts of the second arc ending, it just felt more satisfying for L to defeat Light then seeing a brat beat Light. And at least Light died in his father's arms, instead of dying alone like a pathetic wretch, and there was some sort of closure among his close ones surrounding his death.
OMG, that ending sounds absolutely awesome. I really cannot wait to see this.
Thanks Kinny Riddle! =) Yup, it definitely sounds good!! Will be waiting for it too. =)

Hey all, just thought I'd drop a review of the first film.
Let me first begin by expressing just how large of a Death Note fan I am. I was introduced to the manga via a friend of mine, who said it had a very psychological approach to the detective genre, and that I would likely enjoy if I gave it a shot. It took me a month before I was bored enough to take her advice and give it a read through. I believe in that span of about two weeks, I devoured the entirety of the series, making it up to chapter 107 the week before the final chapter was put online (108). Death Note, practically overnight, became my favorite manga, and one of the best pieces of thriller writing in comic form that I'd ever come across.
Low and behold, Kaneko is announced to be directing a live action adaptation of the hit series. I won't lie and say I wasn't a tiny bit reluctant after hearing this. I loved many of his scifi and fantasy entries into film, but Azumi 2 left a terrible taste in my mouth. I hoped it was simply a one time thing, and he wouldn't make the same mistake on another well loved license.
Most of the Death Note manga is cerebral. There's a lot of internal dialogue, which doesn't bode well for live action. No one wants to be bogged down watching a guy stand there, with dialogue overlaid his face as he 'thinks'. It's considered a cheap and somewhat corny plot device in film, and I can certainly understand that. There was also a lot of concern over the addition of Light's love interest, Shiori. In the manga he doesn't have a true girlfriend, but instead uses the girls around him for his various agenda's.
I'm happy to report that not only did Shusuke Kaneko hit the ball dead on, but he hit it out the park. As both a fan, and a film lover, I was pleased on every level. I won't give a plot summary, especially since it's complicated enough without my possibly confusing things further, but just trust that it's as twisting and windy as the material it's based on.
Tatsuya Fujiwara once again demonstrates his acting ability here, as the enigmatic, genius, and insane Light Yagami. A character that's very deep in motivations, Fujiwara adds an extra layer by giving him a more human side. He's just slightly less cold and calculating than the manga version, but it's enough to be noticeable, and makes him more relatable. He's still incredibly intelligent and quick on his feet, but here we see that he is human, and not quite a God as he believes himself to be. While Fujiwara doesn't quite resemble Light on a physical level, he manages to launch himself past that and embody the character in full. The small grins, the subtle body movements: it all adds up to create an interesting, if not frightening look into the mind of a man who wants to change the world.
Kenichi Matsuyama plays the awkward, yet brilliant detective L. This was a great concern of many people, especially since the character L has a lot of small, and not so small, quirks that make him who he is. Whether it be the odd way in which he holds his phone, or the strange positions he shifts into while thinking, L is hardly normal as far as film characters go. Matsuyama completely takes L into himself. On a personal level, I don't believe L could have been portrayed better than what we see in the movie. Every small action is there, his voice, his awkward movements and the humor inherent in his personality: nothing is lost in translation. Even on a physical level, the resemblance is near perfect. Matsuyama is L. The perfect example of this, is a scene in which L is talking to Chief Yagami about how Light has a one to three percent chance of being Kira, and as he does so he is stacking pastries onto a stick. He stops for a moment, looks at the chief, grabs another stick of pastries, and hands it to the chief simply saying "Here". The chief grabs it in a puzzled fashion, and passes it on to one of the other investigators. This scene embodies L's haphazard personality and approach to things, and I loved every moment of it.
Ryuk is the other main character of the film that raised a lot of questions. Kaneko opted to have Ryuk be a completely cg character, voiced by none other than Shido Nakamura (Fearless, Yamato, Izo). Kaneko went the correct route, because Ryuk is a fully living character (Or as alive as a Shinigami can be in the first place...). Nakamura plays Ryuk with just the right amount of sarcasm and wit that would be expected of the Death God. As far as the computer animation is concerned, Ryuk is a very lively character, and very impressive considering how often he's on screen. Based entirely on the fact that he's rarely ever off screen for too long, he is quite the showcase for the cg team.
Shiori is a new character added to the film, as Light's girlfriend. Yu Kashii plays Shiori with just enough innocence which makes the film that much more tragic by the end. By having her character juxtapose to Light, we see a very stark contrast, but it also allows Light to be a more real character in his interactions with her, especially at the climax of this first film. Though many were worried about what this would mean for the rest of the movie, the change is for the better, and it allows the film to flow better.
The rest of the actors all do a commendable job, and no performance stood out as anything below par. It'll be interesting to get to know the investigation team more in The Last Name, as well as Misa Misa, who we saw very little of. She does however get a very good setup and lead in to the next film, so I'm looking forward to how Kaneko handled her side of the story. Perhaps most of all, I'm eager to see the interactions between Light and L, something we got very little of in this first film. If the final shots are any indication, this could be quite the ride.

Wow. Thank you so much, KR.
That the movie is able to innovate such an excellent ending... That really is how the manga should have ended.
If they had been able to keep L alive, and somehow altered events so that the whole Mikami/Takada events occurred with L also, that would have made the manga achieve perfection. Although I did like the characters of Near and Mello, they were too central to the story. Maybe Light killing off Near in the warehouse and then L coming back from the dead with a legitimate and clever/reasonable explanation that had a root in some small details we (readers) missed, would have been best. And as you say, there's way more closure than in the manga, although the feeling of ambiguity in chapter 108 had its own charm.
From your synopsis the only thing I think I would dislike is that Takada didn't have her history with Light and seems dumb in an even broader sense than she is in the manga, but I suppose it was necessary for her to emulate Higuchi in order to be caught as he would have.
I really, really, really would like to see these subbed.
Edit: Kinny, I was thinking it over, and there's something I don't understand, if you could clarify it.
How does L know to fake his own death if Rem is writing from behind the wall? And how does Light's dad know to hand the death note over to him as if controlled? Was everywhere bugged and surveyed and L/Light's dad had hidden earpieces?

1. How does L know to fake his own death if Rem is writing from behind the wall?
2. And how does Light's dad know to hand the death note over to him as if controlled?
3. Was everywhere bugged and surveyed and L/Light's dad had hidden earpieces?
1. A cause of death can only be written ONCE. Once the cause of death begins to take effect, it cannot be overwritten. Like say if I'm to write someone is to die of a car accident, I can't change my mind and have him die by a plane accident once it's past the 6.40 minute window for the condition to take effect. As L has already written his own suicide down A FEW DAYS BEFORE Rem, so what Rem has written would be invalid.
2 and 3. The DN that Misa brought with her is a fake. L has it secretly exchanged, he has the real DN. So Light's dad was not affected at all. He watched and heard everything while away, as L had arranged for everything to be bugged.
I'm still waiting for the second since I just watched the first yesterday. The theater just started to show the first. I'm still not sure when will the second release here in my country.
zomg the ending sounds good... i wonder if the original author was involve in making this ending?

Not at the end, L was killed halfway through
The live action movies really owns to L all the way. The audience proves it. Everytime the L guy does something kinky (like wearing a weird mask, eating odd sweets, and doing a thumbs-up) every girl in the theater screams "kawaii!!".

If they can release Battle Royale in England, there'll come a day when you'll see a Death Note movie DVD in your local HMV, though it may take years that is. Until then, try your local Chinatown instead.

I like how L was being portrayed in the movie. The actor must have studied the mangas. Even better than the anime I would say.
English subs are out? I dont know about other countries, but in singapore, it is out with both chinese and english subs.
Does anyone know of a place to buy the first movie? I'm not having a fun time searching. ^^;;
Don't like Light's character in the movie -- the real Light is someone who can't wait to get home so he can unleash an evil laugh. Movie light is kind of ambivilent, doesn't have that demonic edge to his schemes, doesn't enjoy the power trip, doesn't chortle and crow over his victories.
Can I request someone from the sub groups to English sub this live version?

Thanks to one of my friends on myspace, I found this on DailyMotion.com
Apparently it was subbed by some French guy, the english is a bit more like "engrish" but it gets the job done.

I heard that it would be better to just download the raw version and download the subs from kloofy, and just piece it together rather than watch the not so great resolution and engrish. im wondering if anyone has done it that way yet and if they could tell me if its much more worth it?

They should of made the CG of Ryuk more..real lol. He looks kinda odd compared to the real environment around him.
Hoooorraaayyy for all L fans !!! :heh:
L going to have his own spinoff movie!!
From Manganews.net

hmmm... I guess that it shld be on the LA BB case... any opinions? the one with Naomi Misora
XD XD XD
Hmm, that'll be interesting.
I just saw the first Death Note movie last night and well... it just felt empty to me. I didn't like Light's actor at first, but he really grew on me. L's actor seemed to fit the part at first, but by the end I thought he was just cheesy.
I HATE the way they did Naomi Misora. Her role in the anime was PERFECTLY portrayed. It was the fact that she was a caring, doting fiancee. She was kind, sweet, and susceptible. That made it all the more dastardly when Light killed her. But the Naomi Misora in the movie was a total bitch. I didn't really care when Light killed her, even with the added twist of his girlfriend dying in the process. Yes that was evil, but it wasn't nearly as evil as in the anime. Finally, WE DIDN'T GET TO SEE LIGHT'S EVIL SMILES in the movie. Oh sure, he smiles to himself. But he never smiles to his victims, except to Rei. Oh, come on, seriously. Part of the reason Naomi Misora's killing was so beautiful in the anime was because Light spent thaaaaaaaat long talking to her only to kill her off with a WICKED smile. Where did that go in the movie? No, it was replaced by crying and screaming.
BOO.
Regarding the news of the spinoff movie... bleh. Sounds like a cash plan to me. No Light and no Ryuk make for a boring, boring premise.

What on earth are you talking about? Cheesy? Matsuyama Kenichi lives and breaths L, he is L. You've obviously not seen the second movie. :D
You're right, I haven't seen the second movie.
He's still cheesy though >.>
I just finished watching the movie and it was not what I expected. Everything progressed so fast and I don't like how L looks. His first shot I noticed his lips which was kinda weird. He just didn't look...L enough. Too bad, if only they picked a better actor.
Heh. But Misa is a perfect match ;O

Better actor? Pardon me for repeating myself, but you won't find a better L than in Matsuyama Kenichi. Please reserve judgment of his performance until the second movie.
To Providence: Cheesy my ass. :p If you want to blame L for being cheesy, blame Oba Tsugumi for designing L's character design. Matsuyama merely brought out the essence of L's eccentric cheesiness to life.

I will agree with you there, that he does a very accurate portrayal of L.
The only reason this bothers me is that Light's character has been changed so much.
To me, movie Light has lost the sense of psychotic brilliance that the manga and especially the anime have portrayed so well.

I think so as well. The movie did a very bad job in protraying Lights semi-chaotic genius character, which is selfcollected and rolemodel in public, but chaoticly inteligent in private. In the movie it seems like he is just some regular high school student who happened to find the note and performed some medicore plans. Maybe its because they didnt show any of lights thoughts and reflections. And they didnt do that good of a job with the other characters too, but Light is who disappoints me the most. I think the defferent original but still well written ending of the first movie is why i think the movie wasnt a total failiour. And I also think they explained the deathnote rules too late or in inapropriate situations, so that people who didnt read the manga or watched the anime might feel odd and think the rules are just randomly added to justify the wierd story developments.

Death Note: First movie
Well, i just watched it like, 10 minutes ago, and it doesnt really gives that much anticipation like what the anime did. And, I dont like the actor playing Light. I thought he looks sissy. Not very macho/good looking. I think Oguri Shun makes a better Light.
Kenichi Matsuyama is perfect for L. But in the movie, L seems so lazy, not weird enough. What's with all the donuts/sweets/cake? Its too much! Quite distracting. LOL.
They should do the whole episode 1 from the anime, because I think from that whole episode, people who dont read the manga can understand.
And the movie isnt as excited as I thought it would be. When I watch the anime, I was like "Woah","Geniuss","Oh my god","No way" etc most of the time. But when I watch the movie I was like, "......" all the way until Naomi/Shiori tragedy.
Light should be taller. He looks so weak. Overall its 7/10 for me.
For the second movie, it'll only be shown in Malaysia in January. Blerghh

He watched and heard everything while away, as L had arranged for everything to be bugged.
i think what kinny meant was since L has already written his own death, he shouldn't know when rem wrote his name down in her book since what rem written would be invalid and technically L shouldn't have felt a thing.
The only plausible explanation is L noticed rem left the room, and assumed rem's action just as how L predicted rem would act. Then pretend to have in a heart attack and see if Light would show his true face, which to L's favor, he did.
Because otherwise, this ending would have a really big plothole.

If you seen the Anime or read the manga, then I wouldn't reccemond watching the movie.
Light doesn't not seem like the light you read in the manga or seen in the Anime. In the movie, light doesn't have that genious type look or feel like in the manga or the anime. Plus he looks a bit girly.
Also, the story is waaaaaaaaaayyyy off the manga and the anime. Forexample, in the movie he find the death note differntly then the manga and anime.
Don't watch!! Unless you want to see how bd the movie is compared to the manga and anime.
Finally, the show is here in SG. Yup, juz back from the movie. Full house. Maybe cos' it was a sneak preview since the official date here is 28Dec. Well, the movie 2 differed quite a bit from the manga/anime for me. But, I guess that L fans will surely like it and actually to me, the movie is good. L's actor did quite a good job here. In fact, even Raito's actor seem to improve in the second movie too.
Juz be prepared if u r goin to watch the DN movies, dun compare them with the manga/anime. Well, to me, it looks like an alternative storytelling of DN tt's all. XD
*waiting patiently for L's stand alone movie in 2007* XD XD XD

Question about Death Note Movie 1:
For someone who has seen the anime up until it was subbed(e.g. episode 11 now) and hasn't read the manga at all, will watching part 1 spoil the story for me? Since its a two part movie, how far into the story does the movie go? Is the storyline exactly the same, or will watching the movie not spoil the show for me?

Nope. Shinigami can kill the owner of DN. Auraking, haf u read the manga till the very end? I shant spoiler here. If u have read it, you shld be able to c some similarities in the manga and the movie though some parts of the timeline is being distorted.
About Light's father, as you can c. The movie differs quite a bit off the anime/manga. Therefore, it is not surprising that his father din die and since the book that Light wrote his dad's name down was fake.
As u haf said, Shinigami cannot leave the owner side unless the owner died. Yup, Light is dead so he can be seen still "flying around Tokyo Tower" ? Lolz :heh:
Anyway some of the DN rules to mention for your reference.
"The owner of Death Note cannot be killed by a god of death who is living in the world of the gods of death"
"Also a god of death who comes to the human world, in the objective to kill the owner of the Death Note will not be able to do so"
"Only a god of death that has passed on their Death Note to a human is able to kill the owner of the Death Note"
Hope that these will help u to clarify some of the doubts.

JUst to translate, 再聪明的人,也会有失算的一天 means "No matter how smart he is, one day he will make a mistake."
Anyway Light had to lose in order to be politically correct. If he won, I wonder whether some officials from some more strict countries would have allowed it to be screened.

Seriously, what's with all the influx of negative reaction to the movie the past few days? It seems like you guys have based your judgment AFTER watching the anime.
For those of us fortunate enough to watch both movies BEFORE the anime, we thought it was OK, I at least was willing to tolerate Fujihara Tatsuya, though he may never be the perfect choice in depicting Light's evil genius, Fujihara did a decent job in portraying Light. And Matsuyama Kenichi was absolutely perfect in his portrayal as L.
This is as good a live-action adaptation of a manga goes, and the original twist at the end of the second movie was superb.
Unless you are a die-hard Light fangirl (or fanboy), the second movie ending can actually be more satisfying than the manga ending, which was very disappointing in many ways. Why do you think there was so much buzz about the "original" ending? I personally found my money well spent on this movie ticket.
I really do not believe there's nobody here who doesn't dislike the movie, especially the posts in the first few pages. Where are you? Where are you? Let's be 'avin you! :D

Wow call me surprised too.
I already read the manga and watched a few weeks worth of the anime, but I definitely liked the movies. I didn't care too much about the changes. So many of you whine too much, but with a limited amount of time in a movie can you really have it any other way? Do you want a 12-hour epic just to make the whole Death Note (and its details) fit into a movie? You already have the anime for that thing.
They 'deliberately' changed details, canned characters, and re-arranged plots to make the story coherent while keeping the length of the movie to reasonable levels. You should even thank them for splitting it into two movies.

Just finish the movie 2 yesterday, i have a few questions to clarify regarding the movie:heh:
1. How did L realize that 13 day rule was a fake one?
2. I'm little confused about the exchanging of fake death notes, how did watari seize the chance to do it? Is Misa holding the real deathnote during day 1?
I read the manga before I watched the anime and the movie.
From a point of view not compare the manga/anime with the movie. I have to say, the movie was really horrible.
First off. Tatsuya Fujiwara is ridiculously ugly looking from my personal opinion, but as an actor who plays Light, he does fit for that role. He is over-dramatic and just plain awkward to watch. I don't expect the main character to look exactly like the one in the manga/anime, but at least someone who can portray the character correctly. Light is very intelligent and I would expect the character be someone who looks intelligent for the role.
What I thought was really weird at the end was when L whoop out the potato bag of chips and start eating in front of Light. If they're having some staring battle between each other, it's really unnecessary for L just to whoop out this bag of chips behind his back and start eating in front of the dude.

Most probably L was just guessing that light was using the bag of chips and wanted to test his response by eating in front of him.

I don't expect a movie to retell the manga story down to the most minute of details of course, OTOH it were the characters of Light and L that made Death Note into such a hit, so the director should have stuck with mangaka's characterization of Light. Instead, he made Fujiwara's Light into a common or garden psycho rather than a brilliant megalomaniac (and exposed his shortcomings as an actor). Heh, when L can counter Yagami's insistent wines 'why do you keep suspecting my son' by a simple 'have you taken a good look at him lately', there's something seriously wrong with the adaptation.
As for Naomi, I hate manga and anime treatment of 99.9% of women, so any deviation is a welcome relief.

Has the DVD for the 1st movie been released yet and when when is the 2nd movie DVD going to be released? Thanks :)
I kinda liked it, but Light seems less intelligent compared to the series and....
he likes sweets?
To be honest, I think they still crammed too much into a two hour movie, Ryuk was done very nicely though:P and of course Misa is cute:P.
Just saw the movie. Obviously due to me having seen the anime beforehand the movie seemed a bit rushed. But I guess it was done fairly well considering the limitations of a two hour movie with all this content. And the actor for L was very good, although I feel like his character feels a bit different and not as smart as in the original. Yagami didn't seem to respect him as much as in the anime. Also it seemed like the story with Light and Naomi was less calculated - in the anime he's careful to make sure no hint of suspicion can be taken from her, in the movie he walks off after she has accused him of being Kira......
But all in all, I think it was a good film adaptation of the original, and it definitely could have been a lot worse.

There's one thing I want to clarify.
The upcoming Death Note movie...Death Note Gaiden that's going to have L as the main character, presumably as a prequel movie...
Is it going to be a canon prequel, or is it in the same reigns as the 1967 Casino Royale and Never Say Never Again of the 007 trilogy, as in non-canon productions?

I hope the thrid movie after The Last Name is the most sucessful I would love to see a spin-off manga on just L . Dealing with his previous cases .

And was it a prequel as someone stated above you?
I saw the DT Movie 1 again yday I just noticed how poor chracterisation or personality is potrayed as compared to anime . I mean the actor who potrays Light is below average also doesnt look Light . Atleast L actor looks like L but his acting doesnt do justice to chara and his voice isnt that suited .
On a brighter note Yagami Sr and Ryuuku roles have been portayed with perfection IMO
The second Death Note movie (Death Note: The Last Name), which is out, continues the first movie, then it ends the story.
The upcoming one, Death Note Gaiden, will be about L, which should be a prequel.
I thought L did really well in the second movie. Misa is <3able.

I was amazed on how Ryuk and Rem looked in the movie. It was obviously CG, but it was close enough to be believable. In the anime, althought the artists do a good job rendering and animating the characters, it doesn't give out a full 3D realistic feel to it like CGI does. I'll give them points for that.
The story was pretty good, though now I want to read the manga to compare them. I know the anime's closer to the manga than the movie, but the way Last Name ended, it doesn't feel right. I know there were two more characters that were somewhat like L as well, but they were never introduced in the movies.

No spoilers in this movie? Cuz I haven't read the manga... I only watch the anime.
just watched the first movie, couldn't resist as a torrent appeared here on animesuki...it was pretty good! it's quite different from the anime though many events happen the same way. if you've watched the anime up to episode 9, you won't be spoiled by the first movie.

The movie sucks. They change everything. Light isn't believable either. The manga = awesome. The movie = crappy cash in.

They don't change everything in the first movie. It's really just summarized.

Well, they did change how Light deals with Ray Penbar's fiancee (forgot the chick's name) which had me a bit disappointed. That scene took away a lot of the awe of "Light's genius mind" for me. It made Light come across more sinister, but not smarter.
Then, in the following scene with L eating the potato chips. It seems to make L more competent as an investigator.

Thanks for the verification in reference to Ray's fiancee, as I was totally like "what-how come I don't remember that"? :eyespin:
I also felt L isn't protrayed as "brilliant" as I had imagined, and I thought Light didn't come accorss as "brillaint" at all, more like a sicko who enjoys killing anyone. (true but the brilliance as a being wise, was potrayed more as a smart jackass instead).
His dad was brilliant!
Perhaps the second movie will have more of a wits battle in it?

I just can't get over the bad acting! What kind of instructions do they give the actors anyway? "No, you see this character actually talks like he's reading from a teleprompter".
And the CGI... I wish I could write the one animating/producing it down in a 'Death Note' of my own, it looked like a frigging videogame for chrissake!
In my opinion movies that adapt anime/manga should be made to be a movie based on a manga/anime, not a movie that imitates it like this piece of shit!
Meh, I don't know, I just feel that this movie was more like a high-school project than an actual movie.

The movie was made to work on the big screen, with a budget and a climax. I actually saw the movie after only seeing a few episodes of the anime. In Japan, both movies were out before the TV series. From that angle, it's really about as good as it could get. Ever read a novel and then see the movie? You'll get the same thing. Tho I must admit that Naomi's role in the movie made me quite disappointed in her role in the anime.
Another thing to consider: How do you know how brilliant and scheming Light was in the anime/manga? Voice overs. The anime frequently had him thinking on screen, he was shown with red eyes and hair, and was very easily portrayed as smart, and aware of his surroundings. Even L had that luxury in the anime. Meanwhile, in the real world, you don't get that pleasure. Watch the movie, and consider what was going through Light's head. His actions are a bit more calculated than you might think, but we don't get to read his mind. L naturally comes out as smarter because he is recognized as such by more people. I don't recall the movie having more than his father and sister complimenting Light. Different medium means different approach, as well as having time constraints.
On its own, I think it is a perfectly fine movie. And the second is no slouch either, but anyone who insists on comparing the second movie to the manga/anime will be woefully disappointed. It's not the same. If it was the same, why not stay home and read a book. That said, you now may have a reason to watch it. Because it has things you won't (and as a thriller, shouldn't) expect.

Last Name 2?
The second Movie title is The Last Name
and the first movie title is only Death Note
Same, I think the movie wasn't bad
Now that I've seen up till episode 22 of the anime, I gotta say the movies' storyline is just... bad.
I know most of you guys here dislike the movie, but I actually like the movie's ending despite the fact I read the mang as it got published a while back.
In my opinion lots of the characters they skipped over weren't that important in the greater scheme of things anyway. For a condensed version, the movies weren't bad at all, they got the essence of the story down well enough.

The ending to movie #2 was interesting but I don't quite understand why L would write his own name down and what it actually accomplished.
L has physical ownership of two notebooks at this time, did he think there was another one out there? Who was he protecting himself against by writing his name down?
Also, even had he not written his name down, almost nothing would have been different. He would have died because of Rem, but Yagami-papa and co. would catch Light afterwards. All writing his own name down allowed L to do was to rub the capture in Light's face. Did he decide to take the 100% chance to rub it in Light's face and die rather than possibly die before that? I just don't know what L was protecting himself from by writing his own name down. What was going to happen where that would have made a difference?
Also, how did he even know that "writing your name down invalidates all subsequent name writing in other notebooks"? This rule is never given in the plot of the series and Rem was not talking at all.
Also, shouldn't Rem be able to tell if a human is already under the control of a Death Note?

Well this is coming from someone who hasnt read the manga yet (I know...I know...Someday. :heh: )...It really wasnt all that bad to be honest.
It was just kinda fun to see something animated turn into live action I guess. Yes the guy that portrays light sucks and doesnt look the part, but L was great and misa was adorable so you know I just dont let it bother me. :p
Overall it was enjoyable and I cant wait to see this supposed L prequel thats coming.

I liked the movies but as it got to the end, it started to make less and less sense and everyone seemed to drop in IQ. Why would L kill himself anyway? I just want to know. Does the ending of the manga make sense and is it good?

Misa has black hair? Urgh, how gay. I hate when they make everything "Normal" in movie adaptions of comics/manga etc.
I don't like that kind of approach at all and it puts me off it. Bleached blonde asian gothic lolitas are quite possibly the cutest things on earth but ones with black hair are a dime a dozen :/ Blonde + goth = unique.

I guess if she only had a background role it's understandable... but she better bleach it or wig up for the second movie :/ It's just a pet peeve of mine when "Live action" has to mean "More boring version thereof". Like Keanu Reeves' shitty black haired non-trenchcoat wearing John Constantine. Didn't they make Rei Ayanami "Normal" in some promo pics for a live action EVA?
I mean, they can have evil looking death monsters, but a blonde japanese girl? And a goth to boot? Pfft.
Maybe in the next movie when she tries to be his girlfriend, he'll be all like "But I like blondes."

EVERYONE THERE HAS BLACK HAIR. Argh! That looks kind of creepy. A real grouping of japanese weirdos wouldn't have their natural colours. Are they trying not ot offend the "elders" too much or something? And why is everyone trying to look solemn and badass? Only L is in character. Misa is so out of character looking and not just the hair! The actor is really hot though I wish she'd bleach it and smile or something :/

First, you do realize there is a thing called the Edit Button? :D
Seriously, what did you expect from a LIVE ACTION version?
While multi-coloured hair is a daily staple of anime characters, with their seemingly gravity-defying hairdos, IMHO I'd be horrified to see everyone trying to dye their hairs into multi colours for a live action adaptation. It'd just look downright silly.

Creepy? I don't find anything wrong with the picture at all.
While I understand your gripe about Misa's hair colour, I seriously don't see what's wrong with the others with their NATURAL HAIR COLOUR. Not to mention their manga counterparts had black hair as well, so I don't know what you're complaining about.

Please note besides Misa, who is supposed to be a Goth-loli, and thus your definition of a "weirdo". Light is a "straight A elite student" (on the outside at least), Watari is L's butler-like assistant, and Light's dad is your average cop. Besides L's eccentricities and Light's megalomanical attitude, you're telling me the rest are all weirdos?
And why is everyone trying to look solemn and badass?
What else do you expect them to look? Smiling and looking cheerful in an otherwise morbid story? :heh:
I personally thought Toda Erika did a decent job as Misa, better than Fujihara Tatsuya's Light, though still paling in comparison with Matsuyama Kenichi's L.
No offense intended to anyone here, but once again, what is with all the influx of negative opinions? Most of them formed their opinions AFTER watching the anime, when the movies were released BEFORE the anime was even aired and it got decent reviews. I'm afraid their views may have been influenced by the anime. Enjoy the movies for the decent LIVE ACTION adaptations they are, and not just a copy of the manga and anime, as well as be grateful they even bothered to make TWO movies instead of truncating all the story into one.

Misa's bleached blonde hair is no weirder than her gothy attire. It's perfectly normal for japanese people to dye their hair these days, and bleached blonde hair goes with the Lolita look anyway. It makes perfect sense for Misa to be blonde.
And I wouldn't be horrified at all. You do realise that REAL people have those hair colours, right? Bright hair colours is one of the things I like about anime. People in the real world are fucking bores. The only reason that it's like that in the real world is because of that, and discrimination(social and employment). If people had the chance, there would be a lot more people dying their hair funky colours. After all, why does anime have such a range of hair colours to begin with? It's obvious that's how, at least subconciously, japanese people, and probably westerners due to anime's popularity, want the world to look like.
I'm positively horrified that they don't. It's very conformist. Not only is it not acceptable for people in the real world to have hair like that, we have to further re-inforce it by keeping alternative looking people out of our fiction too?
While I understand your gripe about Misa's hair colour, I seriously don't see what's wrong with the others with their NATURAL HAIR COLOUR. Not to mention their manga counterparts had black hair as well, so I don't know what you're complaining about.

I would say Light's Megalomania makes him a weirdo. L is definitely a weirdo, Misa is definitely strange, and many of the cop characters are hardly normal in their personality either, at all...
Just saw the second movie and so the circle is complete. I haven't read the manga, only following the anime, so I hope the ending isn't really like that! Nah it couldn't be.
As for why L wrote his own name in the death note, I think I figured it out. When I first thought of it, it seemed like a plot hole since L has control over both death notes and he isn't expecting the death gods to take any action, so there should be no reason for him to protect himself from being killed by a death note, especially by dooming himself!
But there is a reason, the piece of death note that was used to kill the third Kira. L knew Light still had that, and it would have been used to kill him after Misa's death note fails to work...well that's my theory.
Still makes you think L would have thought of something better.

Please note that Japan IS a very conformist society, so conformist it actually freaks you out. So unless you don't want to work in those "normal" 9-5 jobs that ensures some sort of financial income in Japan, it's better off for you to keep your hair undyed.

You've said it yourself, most mangaka and anime creators draw their characters with colourful hair probably because black hair is boring. But I must emphasize again that this is a LIVE ACTION adaptation.

Depends on how you want to see fiction. While flashy suits work in the X-Men comics, I'm just glad Bryan Singer didn't make Hugh Jackman wear that yellow leotard suit in the movie adaptation. When comics and animation gets adapted into a live action setting, the audience would prefer to see their characters as "realistic" as possible in order to better suspend their disbelief. Unless you want to see a "surreal" adaptation, like the recent "300" movie.
Err, probably because the Manga is in black and white?
No, because the most of the characters' hair colour IS black, even in the anime.
I would say Light's Megalomania makes him a weirdo. L is definitely a weirdo, Misa is definitely strange, and many of the cop characters are hardly normal in their personality either, at all...
I don't know about ethnic-Asian cops in Western countries, but in Asian countries, I have yet to see a "weird" cop with his/her hair dyed. The culture is just different.
Quick question: I have watched death note till ep 24. Is there anything happening in the 2nd live action that could be a spoiler for the anime? I watched the first movie and it is almost the same as the anime apart from slight differences in the storyline.
anyone know much about the third movie that comes out this year?

I don't think Japan is any more comformist than here, and is probably less so even. I live in a very conservative country. Just about every set of "Look I've been to Japan!" captures any number of oddballs. You just wouldn't find any where I live, at all.
And you do realize the story is set in Japan, where people's NATURAL hair colour is black? (Or darkish brown at best. )
Doesn't matter, Japanese people dye their hair too. Misa is a model, a gothic lolita model. Many of them have bleached blonde hair, singers too. Like Kana who changes her hair every other week, but is generally blonde.

So? It doesn't just look more interesting in cartoons, it looks more interesting IN GENERAL. If anything, notable hair colours are more interesting in real life because you expect bright colours in comics and cartoons.

I don't know how much this is true. I think it's one of those things that people believe because it sounds like it must be true, but isn't. In reality there are things even worse than X-men that people accept. Lord of the Rings for instance, heh. And a lot of godawful decisions are made in the name of it. See: Transformers movie.

So? You're talking about singers and the ilk that you see in the entertainment industry, but we're talking about most of the characters in this story, and they are of the "serious by-the-book" cops ilk, no matter how incompetent they are. They are not singers, for god's sake.

Perhaps you should suggest that every live action adaptation of every manga out there, from GTO and Battle Royale to recent titles like Honey & Clover and Nana, should get all their actors to dye their hair colour the way their manga counterparts do.
No disrespect intended, but I believe you might be getting a bit superficial in this aspect. The thing is, hair colour takes back stage to the story, and in no way does it make the characters or the story any less interesting just because they don't "look like" their manga counterparts. Provided the actor can play out the essence of the character's personality, I seriously don't give a damn about their hair colour as long as it doesn't impede my enjoyment of the story.

Why not? People do it for movie roles already in the west. Plus, there is such a thing as a "Wig".
I have no idea why accuracy to the source material is of absolutely no concern to you when it comes to character designs.
I mean, what if they made a live action Bleach movie, and Ichigo had black hair? That would not only be shit character design wise, it would affect the story negatively too.

But it makes it look visually less interesting. Movies, anime, whatever, are a visual medium. A certain appearance can also help vastly with communicating a character's personality; hair colours in anime are often used to denote a certain archetype of character, for example.

Why do? Just because people in the west do it doesn't mean Asian actors have to do it. Don't apply the same standards everywhere, it doesn't work that way.
I have no idea why accuracy to the source material is of absolutely no concern to you when it comes to character designs.
Accuracy no concern to me? Please do not put words into my mouth. You talk about accuracy yet you disregard the fact that you are being unrealistic to expect Asians in real life to look anything like their manga counterparts. Besides, for starters, NOBODY IN REAL LIFE HAS BIG MANGA-LIKE EYES.
I mean, what if they made a live action Bleach movie, and Ichigo had black hair? That would not only be shit character design wise, it would affect the story negatively too.
You're cherry-picking. Unless the hair colour's absolutely central to the storyline, then yes, in Ichigo's case, the actor has to dye his hair orange, but otherwise, I stand by the opinion that hair colours are really irrelevant.
But it makes it look visually less interesting. Movies, anime, whatever, are a visual medium. A certain appearance can also help vastly with communicating a character's personality; hair colours in anime are often used to denote a certain archetype of character, for example.
Not all the movies in the world sell by looking visually interesting. While you've hit the point that "a certain appearance can also help vastly with communicating a character's personality", I'm afraid you've totally lost the plot by paying too much attention to the hair colours which are insignificant in a LIVE ACTION medium, no matter how symbolic they may be in an ANIMATED medium.
Judging from your arguments, I take it that you live in North America and have been to Asia about once or twice? Please do pardon me if I'm mistaken. No disrespect intended, as an Asian living in Asia, this argument about manga character's hair colours in live action adaptations is really a no-brainer for me. Believe me, almost no one here who've seen both the manga and the movie had any issues with why Light doesn't have brown hair or why Misa's hair is undyed. I honestly don't see what the fuss is all about.
And so, I will leave my arguments as such. If that still does not convince you, then so be it, for your arguments do not convince me either that this is worth going through for ages. I will respond no more.

Whoooo..... I'd be interested in a movie that focuses more on L's past. Particularly with the latest episode of the anime and all it's obscure hints to L's past. Great! More Matsuyama Ken'ichi. ^_^
Firstly:
I much preferred how the second movie resolved things versus how the anime and manga went about the twist. It made out L to be far more of a genius and having a genius outwit a genius instead of one just going stupid suddenly. However, I found the movie pretty bland otherwise.
Secondly:
Death Note Films' U.S. Premieres at Newport Beach Fest
The two Death Note live-action films will have their United States premieres at the Newport Beach Film Festival in southern California. The first Death Note film will screen on Saturday, April 21 at 8:30 p.m. and Tuesday, April 24 at 4:00 p.m. Death Note: The Last Name will screen on Sunday, April 22 at 8:30 p.m. and Wednesday, April 25 at 4:00 p.m.
There is no third movie. There is a separate movie being made based on L's previous cases.
Seriously? I'd heard about that on Wikipedia, but you can't really trust Wiki. And, gonna try not to give anything away here, but let's say after the way the second movie ended,I couldn't imagine that they'd be able to pull off a third movie. But I didn't know it was a totally seperate thing. Will it still be Kenichi Matsuyama? Because he rocked as L.
However, I do wish The Last Name had gone differently, in that I think it would have been cool to have three or (if needed) four movies, and cover everything. I'm just sad that Mello will never have a movie appearance. I figure that's why L eats so many chocolate bars in the movies---someone working on the movies was a Mello fan XD I mean, c'mon. L never eats chocolat bars in the series...He's obviously channeling Mello XD

if light loses in the anime like in the movie i'm just gonna delete this series -_- the movie had a really bad end  :frustrated:
I don't know the exact details, but from what I heard, i think it's pretty similar. Actually, for reasons I won't go into right now due to possible spoilers, I may even like the movie better. Let's just hope that the rumors I heard were false.
If the ending of the series DOES suck as bad as the movies, though, I don't know what I'll do. This series is too awesome to "delete" as you put it...but......ah. Wah. ^^'
I liked the movie's ending far, far better than the manga ending. Granted it was short due to time constraints, it still felt much better than the atrocious manga ending. They also made Naomi Misora's death a bit better in the movies IMO. - she doesn't just hand over her name to Light.

I loved the way the battle between L and Light concluded in the movie way more than the manga's original ending as well. It somehow feels more . . . suitable, at least to me. :D
I really like deathnote ( anime and live action )
and really like kenmatsu as L:D

both movies are great
but there is a part i dont get it
at the ending of last name, after the talk of L and Light's father, did L suddenly fall unconsious ? or what happened to him ?

theres a thing i want 2 point out, not sure if any1 has mentioned or noticed before
in the 2nd movie, there is a flaw
When Rem wrote L's name down, she should not have died because L's death was already written in note and the effect should be nulled

Except it's not a flaw.
Rem also killed Watari. It is easy to conclude that Watari would be responsible for Misa's death sometime in the future causing Rem to die.
In my opinion, the movie was nothing compared to the manga. The storyline was messed a little bit and whatever happened to some of my fav characters??? I think the manga was tons better than the movie
L-Movie 's website is now open!! - Starting Filming this July though...

There's a teaser trailer with it.
Sorry for double posting if there's already such information on it. Thanks! *Can't wait to watch the movie....* L~!!! :X

both deathnote movies were a major disappointment...completely inferior to the anime series in every way
I'll come in here (first post! Hi...)
Anyho, my friends and I have seen the first movie and quite liked it considering everything. One of my main worries when I heard about the live action was how they would handle the shinigami – I was amazed. Although sometimes when Ryuk laughed as my brother said “it looks like he’s choking.”
Anyway, there was a reason I came here – I’ve seen the first 20 minutes of the
second movie - I'm waiting to read the rest in the manga, dont wanna spoil :p
I don’t know if anyones commented on this but…
Ukita is the one killed by the second kira outside sakura t.v
whereas/compared to
In the movie, Mogi is one of the one to get killed, which I can't understand - I thought he even looked like Ukita too.
Was this just some random change? Or was there a reason?
Little/minor detail, but it just bugs me heheh.
*Can't wait for the L movie!!!*

C1anime is going to release the two live-action DN movies. I should have the first movie translated by Monday, and the second done in a few weeks.
Don't use Mishicorp's subs. Use ours - believe me, it's going to be the best fansub version you ever see. My teacher and I have even translated long strings of Japanese signs. :)
Good news - I've finished translating the first DN movie. In a month or so, C1 should have released it. :)

It's a shame I never caught the premiere of the film when I was in Hong Kong last summer.
