How is the movie related to the anime? Is it a sequel or a different story?
Not sure why spamming already posted information will do us any good, and the movie still doesn't have a theater/DVD release date. It's still a long wait. What this thread will contain will just be pointless speculations about its production and fanboys saying either "this will cover the plot" or "this won't cover the plot." Pointless.

Sounds intresting im waiting to see the final episode anyone know what the movie is suppose to be about. Im not sure if i should get excited or not i guess well have to wait and see
I think it's ok to have an extra thread just for the movie (and speculation about it). Unless a mod has a different opinion of course.

After the ending credits for the last Shakugan no Shana TV episode, there was an announcement for a movie coming soon.
Either the Shakugan no Shana movie will end up being a parrallel recapitulation of the anime's plot but taking place within an alternate reality and presenting a whole new set of different characters except for: Yuuji, Shana, Alastor, Kazumi, and the other Flame Hazes.
Just as it was the case in
Escaflowne: A Girl in Gaea Movie from the TV series.
and
Utena: End of Adolescence Movie from the TV series.
Or it will be a direct sequel that will carry on the storyline where the anime left off like was the case for FullMetal Alchemist: The Conqueror of Shambala.
I hope it's the second, since from what I hear the ending left some things to be desired, and since the movie was announced with the end of Shana, it's more likely to continue the anime plot (or so I hope)
/me really hopes it is about Book 10 ^_^;;

It had better be a sequel. We need conclusion!

yea
i wonder if they will pull a "school rumbe"
like how at the end of eps 24, it says that there is going to be a movie
and it turns out that the movie is a sequel instead of a recap of the last few eps plus a little bit extra

s1 covers half, so the movie should cover the other half or parts of it. hopfully theres left over for a s2 :)

ive allready read somewhere when sns was still running that there is allready a planning or even progress of making a second season. I dunno if i just read shit or it was simply mistaken for the movie.

You read the "2 season" thing which everyone misinterpreted to be 2x26 when it really meant 2x12.
All I can say is "Yuuji and Shana BETTER make out!" XD
Nothing graphic. Just one little kiss is all I want. And there has to be a mutual confession of course or stated clearly that they are a couple. Shana-chan took the first step. Come on Yuuji, be a man! XP

I would actually be disappointed in this. It sounds too straight-forward and trite. One of the interesting things about the story is the complex interaction between the characters. Having it end so simply just wouldn't make sense.
Shana & Yuji kiss.. that would destory the story, i'd like it a lot more of Shana just gave him a lemon bread. ^^

Not lemon bread -- melon bread.
Incidently, it is named melon bread because of it's shape, not because there is any melon in it. Actually it is made with layer cookie dough wrapped around the bread dough and cooked together. Some radical and untraditional melon bread is made with a melon filling, but I don't know if Shana likes that variant.

I got it wrong on purpose..
Hmm, all i can say about the movie at this point - i just hope Ko Otani does the music. ^^;

Most melon pan is made with "melon" juice. Mostly honeydew and very trace amounts. There are a few which actually take on the color as well or even have solid fillings.
You read my mind.
LOL. I'm so happy you told me about this series, Shinji. XD

Come on Yuuji, be a man! XPYou hit the nail on the head! Yuji's being a wimp, he should've gone for the kiss at the end of the season. She was half clothed and in the mood clearly. Nothing like the blonde siblings though please, that was sick. I can't believe Yuji didn't clearly articulate a response to Shana's first step. He needs to forget about the anemic girl and go for it.
There was to much going on for a kiss scene imo. The show was about Shana's feelings for Yuji, she said she loves him - whats all we had to be shown. <3

I know but she's the one who had to go through all the hell, Yuji should've at least made her happy in the end. It's not like she's not a catch either, I'd go for it any day. There's not even a debate between her and anemic, one sucks and one's badas*.
There was a lot going on but that's just why it should've been done, emotions were running high and all. I thought just before the meltdown or right after would've been great times. Shana was really in need of "reward" after all she went through and how she didn't kill Yuji when she was supposed to.

Yo folks!
I watched the last Epsiode of Shakugan no Shana ,a little while ago so i thought to watch for informations..
Now I'm currently searching over an hour and only found the information that the movie wouldn't release this year. That was really depressing.
So, does somebody now something more ? :/
(btw. sorry if my english is a little bit 'creepy' :D)
The movie will be out in April 2007 :)
The movie promo on the Hecate-tan DVD sure looked spiffy. Too bad it was so short. I wonder if they're going to re-use the OP/ED or pick some new ones.
I wonder if they're going to re-use the OP/ED or pick some new ones.
I've got a feeling they'll probably go for a new OP & ED.. give it more of that new style edge. The same question can be asked about the musical score.
The movie will be out in April 2007. I can't wait that long
I cant wait for the movie, and it better be a sequel to the series. There are a lot of loose ends to tie up. And of course Yuji and Shana have to kiss finally >.< Im not asking for anything big - just one small kiss would be enaugh. I mean come on - its fairly obvious they like each other (doh) - Shana said she loves him (which was kinda a grand step to take for her... but the fact she loved him was obvious from the ep3 or so :P)
And Yuji chose to go and die together with her (good thing they both made it in one piece :eyespin: ). My gues is they decided to leave this cherry on top for the movie.
Oh, and im very much looking towards some more "shut up! shut up! shut up!" - Shana is just so damn cute when she does that :D
<stuff that isn't going to happen... ever>
They have already announced what the movie is going to cover. It's going to be rehashing old material.
2. Movie http://www.dengekibunko-movie.com/
Recomposed from original novel vol. 1. non original movie.
April 2007 on theater with "Kino no tabi" and "Inukami!" the movie in "Dengeki movie festival" .
Its not like they cant add a few scenes :eyespin:

You mean there's a chance? I mean, isn't it obvious by now that, unfortunately, Yuuji prefers Shana?
You mean there's a chance? I mean, isn't it obvious by now that, unfortunately, Yuuji prefers Shana?
You mean that the girl was not obvious from ep1 ?(or even before that ) :D Seems like you dont like Shana much tho.
Well, very few tsundere (yes yes, even loli ones) manage to win me over, and even then, I usually have someone who I like better than them. I like Eri in school rumble, but I like Yakumo better, although I don't mind either Flag or Onigiri. I like Louise in Zero no Tsukaima, but I like Siesta better :p Shana... well, she has her good and bad moments, not that she's that bad, but I prefer Kazumi :p Only character I liked from the first moment that displays some ojou/tsun qualities (not an established tsundere character) is Shinku, from what I recall.
But yeah, the show is called Shana :p
Actually, Shana might be the first character of this personality type i grew to like. I also prefered Siesta/Kotori/Nerine/Tessa/Haruka etc... you know what type of girls they are. But for one reason or another i couldnt like Kazumi altho she fits in the same category. I find her .... annoying? It seems all she does is get in the way and creates a mess. I dont know why, but thats what i felt after watching the series.
Louise and Siesta are extremely similar to Shana and Kazumi (Granted, Louise is a spoiled brat), and while i was rooting for Siesta all the way(tho it was just as obvious as it is in Shana who the girl will be, but hey - didnt stop me) i simply couldnt help but dislike Kazumi much to my own surprise. I was expecting to like her and dislike(im using this word briefly here) Shana, but it ended up the other way arround. I ended up being rather fond of Shana, while having some dislike for Kazumi. :eyespin:
Well, while I liked Kotori, I supported Nemu in DC :p Although my favorite in DCSS was Aisia :p Sometimes, it's different for some reason :p
That movie sure takes long to come out...
Dont mention Nemu, i hate her just as much as you hate Asa ;)
PD: I just hope there's no YuujixKazumi kiss..
:love:Yoshida is the best ever, ever since sliced melon pan xD
You mean there's a chance? I mean, isn't it obvious by now that, unfortunately, Yuuji prefers Shana?Don't give up hope senpai!!! xD
We can always hope for a neutral ending, Yoshida isn't to be taken lightly! She's a healthy(Where it counts:naughty:) brave and good girl who'll fight with Shana to the last drop of bouncy bouncy melon pan.:heh:
Bouncy....bouncy.....:love::love:
I find her .... annoying? It seems all she does is get in the way and creates a mess.annoying?:(
In the way?:upset:
I suppose this is what Shana feel towards Yoshida too. But it's not like Yoshida had ever signed a contract to 100% support Shana...
She's a good and courageous girl, confronting Shana upfront and honestly. And very bouncy bouncy on top of it ^_^
I hope we get to see as many scenes with Yoshida as possible.
Yoshida isn't Shana's greatest adversary for nothing:o
:love::love::love:*Is proud of Yoshida*<3:heart:<3

We are certain about Shana's and Yoshida's feelings towards Yuuji, alright...What I was wondering was whether we get to see his side of how he feels as well. I thought it was rather unfair if there isn't an explanation for 'why he chooses Shana' or 'why he prefers Kazumi'. :p
Whatever the movie shows, though, I'm sure it will be pretty good.

Dont get me wrong, in normal cases i allways support the girl of her type and i actually dislike tsundere characters quite a bit. This is first time where its the other way arround, and im quite surprised myself :eyespin: I dont just mean in the way of Shana x Yuuji...i mean in the way of everything :eyespin: she just gives me the feeling that everything would be better in the story if she wouldnt be arround :eyespin: Im surprised myself that i feel this way about her, especially since she is the character type i allways like no matter what :eyespin: I dont dislike her in the strong meaning of this word, but somehow for one reason or another i cant get myself to like her. And i tried :P
I found Louise in ZnT annoying as hell and prefered Siesta all the way and this is how it has been 100% all the way with these character types.(provided you have seen ZnT ). Shana and Kazumi are very similar to Louise and Siesta, but much to my own surprise i find Kazumi annoying this time. Why ? I have no idea.
What I was wondering was whether we get to see his side of how he feels as well
Well, at the end he said :"Lets go, i made up my mind long ago....that i'd go with you. And my mind hasn't changed" *goes of to 'die' together with Shana*
And his thought bubbles that Hecate was browsing were filled with Shana and some more Shana :D
This is just like ZnT where we knew from the start that Louise(unfortunately) would be the one. Just like here we knew that Shana would be the one. And although the ending isnt exactly conclusive thinking otherwise is just wistfull thinking. (as much as i wanted Siesta to win in ZnT)
I bet i didnt make much sense :eyespin:

Who knows he may end up with neither and go with Wilhelmina :heh:
He must end up with Hecate if he doesn't end up with Yoshida :D
Nooooooooo! It has to be Hirai-chan! She just has to come back....
Nooooooooo! It has to be Hirai-chan! She just has to come back....
Hirai chan....:( I also want her to have a spot. She's already gone in the main story but at least a little cameo somehow wouldn't hurt...
Hirai chan, and what happened to her, is actually one of the main reasons why I support Shana (even though I favour Yoshida the most.)
If the movie will be mainly based on the first volume of the novel as piku posted, then featuring her will be fine with me. But if it turns out part of the movie where she's in is set after the series then they better have a good excuse for that:heh:
Otherwise I'll contract the One Piece/Gundam Seed fever, and then I would have to add SnS to the list of series where the "good" characters nomatter how "killed/dead" they seem to be, aren't actually dead but will reappear 10-30 episodes later.
Well, at the end he said :"Lets go, i made up my mind long ago....that i'd go with you. And my mind hasn't changed" *goes of to 'die' together with Shana*
And his thought bubbles that Hecate was browsing were filled with Shana and some more Shana :DWell.......:thinker:
I know for sure what he was thinking when he was ogling at Yoshida and her soundfx'ed melon pan:love: in Shanatan returns:naughty: :naughty: :naughty:
Ahhh Yoshida's melon pan:love:... the best an elephant can get....:heh: (j/k don't hit me^^;; )

He's in love with her but he doesn't know :heh: ... Yoshida? well At first I found her annoying but later with her "evil side" in Shana-tan I started to like her a little bit
Yoshida should be with Ike :heh:
PD: I was watching again SnS... and I notice that in the first episode Yuuji was seeing Yoshida and he was blushing, I think... :twitch:
Oh well... whatever, I just like this

I don't share your passion and enthusiasm towards Shana, but I do agree with your point about not minding the other girls in Kazumi's category, but disliking Kazumi. She DID seem to get in the way all the time. It's like, "Kazumi! You don't know the situation! Just GO AWAY STOP BOTHERING ME"

I really do like Yoshida, don't know why, usually cause i prefer the shy ones over the loud tsundere, i do this probably cause most of the time the shy type character gets the lead male the least and i'm one who usually roots for the underdog, who usually never wins!
Probably the only tsundere i liked was Asa from shuffle! Cause in the anime she was the underdog!
I really do like Yoshida, don't know why
We well know the true reason... :D
I prefer shy female characters as well, but as far as the story goes I think that Shana is the right person for Yuuji.

Yes story wise they made it so that no one but Shana is the best girl for Yuji, but in terms of character i think Yoshida would be the better of the choices.
Anyways, I think the Friagne arc was a bit short, hopefully the movie makes it better.
Yeah i felt that way too, at first i thought he was like the main villain which they have to fight against throughout the eps but then he gets killed off so quickly and i'm like, now what?
Then i realised they were going to introduce new villains to the story, so i forgave them. Now i don't think the movie will make the Friagne arc longer as a movie goes for about 1 to 2 or at the most 3 hours and in that 3 hours, they must introduce and defeat all the villains introduced in the series, now a movie has far less time to delve too deep into the villains, so i won't be expecting a extra long Friagne arc.

Just so you know - the movie isn't retelling the whole of the anime series - just the first arc AKA Friagne & Margery Daw.
Onto the subject on the length of Friagne's arc - its true looking back on it you'd think its a bit short, though while watching it, i believe its length works out perfectly for the start of the show. Friagne is my fav' character from the series, so watching the movie shall be one hell of a treat. :3

I would of preferred a sequel rather then a retelling of such a short arc.... Cause i really didn't feel they developed Yuji and Shana's relationship well in the end......

I too rather they did someother story arc then such a retelling, I just cant seems to warm to such retellings. Its not that they dont have the story to make a movie. I mean Vol. 10 of the novel fits a movie prefectly, and its a standalone story too, kinda.

I feel they are just being lazy or don't have the funds to create another anime and are trying to milk some funny with a retelling...
I never liked a retelling unless the story will be different from the original, otherwise i just don't see the point, i mean you know how it's going to end...

I don't think it will be exactly a remake into a 1-2 Hour Movie, take a look at "Air - Movie" for an example if you ever saw it, From a 12 Episode Series into a movie, it actually did well, I liked it more than the series. Now I don't think the Shakugan no Shana will redo all 24 Episodes into one Movie, probably half of it? Or maybe they'll actually add in stuff they never shown/mentioned in the series. Who knows...
I do hope it's completely different though, with new/better scenes and such. I don't mind watching Shakugan no Shana(The Story all over again) Movie, not completely the same, just with atleast enough "new" in it that would satisfy the Viewers/Fans.

I wouldn't mind if they re-did Friagne's storyline, because the way Friagne was finished off in the anime seemed rather lame.
Whereas in vol 1 of the novel:
Friagne shot Shana with that Hougu gun, hoping Shana's body would explode and force Alastor back to the Crimson World, as he did with other Flame Hazes before.
Unfortunately for Friagne, Shana's capacity as a "physical vessel" was immense, which was why Alastor chose her in the first place. So instead of Shana dying, Alastor reveals his ultimate true form (of which Yuji could only catch a glimpse of). Instantaneously, Friagne was toasted literally by Alastor.
This is an anime movie. With 99.999% probability, it will be under 2 hours long. It will likely be 90 minutes or so if we are lucky since most anime movies are just over an hour. Since the other movies that are coming with Shana to the theaters are also retelling 4 episodes worth, my guess is 4x25 = 100 min movie MAX.

Instantaneously, Friagne was toasted literally by Alastor.
sadly, they probably changed this scene, so it wouldn't be that "obvious" for the last episode (although it was really predictable)
but not only that friagne death was lame in the anime, but it was also poorly done (actually, the views made me sick : you could barely understand what happened (especially when friagne was sucking yuuji's power of existence, with a big zoom around the gun and yuuji face -_-), and made the last action scene really cheap, while shana X Sorath fight was actually ok, animation wise.)

I really didn't feel any dislike for the villains, what i found in Shana the series was that the writers actually made you feel sympathetic towards the villain, by giving them a reason to do the bad things, remember Friagne did it out of love of marianne and the perverted siblings did it cause they love each other.
With these reasons i felt i couldn't fully hate the villains like most anime make me to, but instead i was confused as to who i am rooting for lol
^ Not to mention having heroes mistreating the villains, like poor Hecate

Only 5 days left now till hits the theatre.~
*also can't belive no one is discussing about this when it's near release* >>; Guess I'm the only one left interested in the movie?

I'm also excited for the movie! I'm going to go see it probably a couple of days after it gets in the theater (omg theaters so expensive here in Japan). My question is, is it going to be paired with a couple of other movies, or just shown by itself? Because when it's advertised, it's also shown with a couple of other anime movies.
Is the advertisement you saw this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXurMUEU3rI ? It's the latest one. :/ Nothing much in it either.... About paired with other animes... I don't know about that, but it's a movie. You watch what you paid for, there are other anime movies released on the 21st probably.
Small update I guess;

Tenjō wo Kakeru Monotachi (天壌を翔る者たち, Tenjō wo Kakeru Monotachi?) is a single album by Love Planet Five, a group made up of I've Sound singers, which was released in Japan on April 4, 2007 by Geneon. The song "Tenjō wo Kakeru Monotachi" was used as the main theme of the movie adaptation of Shakugan no Shana.
1. "Tenjō wo Kakeru Monotachi" (天壌を翔る者たち, "Tenjō wo Kakeru Monotachi") – 6:49
2. "Tenjō wo Kakeru Monotachi" -instrumental- (天壌を翔る者たち, "Tenjō wo Kakeru Monotachi" -instrumental-) – 6:49

Shakugan no SHANA movie is still scheduled for theatre this coming Saturday, April 21st of 2007.
Shakugan no Shana movie is going to be shown under the event called Dengeki Bunko movie festival; it will also feature Inukami! and Kino no Tabi - the Beautiful World special movies. According to animate.tv, a ticket for each movie costs 2800 en. For Shana's you'll also get a Shana memorial telephone card, for Inukami!'s a special image MAXI CD Single by YOUKO, and for Kino no Tabi's a small bag, a mini-notebook and a special signature card (not sure whose signature you'll get). I'm sure we'll be able to see the movies released separately on DVD. I wouldn't count on a full-length anime movie though. If it's a festival of some sort, I'm more willing to think of them as an hour long features.

And where is this Dengeki Bunko movie festival? Is it a one time event only? Then I can't go see the movie in a regular theater??? Plz let me know.
As I understand, you can already buy the tickets online. The three "festival" movies will be shown in selected theatres across the country from 21st april to 20th may. You should really check out the festival's page for the selected theatres.

It'll be a while before it's released on DVD, let alone in english/fansub. (Months after the DVD release.) So unless you're able to visit a cinema in Japan, I guess the only option available is to sit tight...

Ok, here's the scoop:
Before the movies started there was a brief parody cartoon featuring the main characters from Shana, Kino no Tabi, and Inukami. It featured those characters going to see the Dengeki Bunko movie event. I forget what happened exactly, but it all ended with Shana and the other girl from Inukami getting angry at the two boys. Kino brought her bike into the movie with her.
The movie was actually, to me, a great disappointment. I don't know what I was expecting, actually, since it was clearly going to be a recap. Indeed, it felt like the chopped up bits of episodes and strung them together, with Yuuji giving a narrative. It began with a comprehensive summary of the first episode, in which Yuuji discovers that he's dead and Hirai-chan slowly fades away. We see Friagane's doll come into the classroom and wreak havoc, Yuuji gives his remaining power as a Torch to fix it, etc., etc. The Shana-undressing scene is also kept intact. Scenes of Friagane plotting are also pretty much the same. What was slightly different was the treatment of the Interpreter of Condolences. She appears, gets a quick intro, sends out a finding spell and immediately after meets up with Shana and Yuuji. Unlike the anime, there is little animosity between teh two, and they team up against Friagane almost immediately. The final battle with Friagane goes down much as it did in the anime.
But at the end of the battle, there is quite a surprise! In order to consume the large amounts of Guze Flames released by Friagane, Alastor reveals his true form. Looked really cool on the big screen. Of course, there was no mention of how dangerous this was to Shana. After that, there is a scene where Yuuji appears to "die" as his Torch runs out, but of course it was a fake and Shana laughs at him for being sentimental during his "final" moments. End of story.
There is not a whole lot to look forward to here for Shana fans, unfortunately. But the merchandising was sweet! Shana towels for 5000 yen, yikes.
Oh man, but was the Inukami movie hilarious! I had never seen Inukami before, so I couldn't tell much of what was going on, but it was absolutely insane. In it were parodies of Death Note, Haruhi, Nanoha, Ouran and a bunch more. Definitely the best movie out of the three.
Kino no Tabi movie was rather dull, but gorgeous animation.
Oops double post, gomen.

Went to see the triple feature movie today.
cardslash02 summarized the plot in his/her post above, so I'll add in my impressions.
Yes, that curtain raiser throw in was hilarious, seeing the protagonists from the three movies all in one. After watching this, Super Robot Wars, and Kyoushirou (Kaishaku characters in a jumble), I'd really like to see a spin-off series featuring characters from different anime team up for a common cause.
As for the Shana movie, with prior knowledge that this was going to be a retelling of the first few TV episodes leading up to battle of Shana/Alastor/Margery/Marchosius/Yuuji vs. Friagne/Marianne, there were no surprise factors.
The battle scenes were portrayed well, with Friagne, making full use of his "Dance Party" bell, putting up a good fight befitting that of a Guze no Oh. And Alastor definitely showed why he's called the Tenjou no Gouka, nuliifying Friagne's "Trigger Happy", thatotherwise would have destroyed Shana.
The lack of Yoshida Kazumi (who only makes a cameo appearance) is my only disappointment.
Since the second TV anime series has been announced, the movie serves a publicity role for those who haven't seen the first series who came to see Kino or Inukami! (which I don't think there's many). Unfortunately, there was no mention of the second TV series in the movie. From a marketing standpoint, the release of Toei's Clannad movie(of which a teaser trailer was shown) in September will have much more impact in promoting KyoAni's Clannad TV anime, scheduled for fall.
All in all, 60 minutes of Shana, complete with her "urusai x3" antics and fanservice on a big screen with full blast sound made my day. I don't know if the DVD releases will include all three movies, or will be released separately, but I enjoyed the triple feature matinee (especially for the fanservice factor in Inukami!).

Just received the Shakugan no Shana SP (Introduction to the movie) DVD today. There wasn't really anything new shown in the theatrical trailers and promo spots but it had an interview with the Japanese VA's of Shana & Yuji and a a short feature of Shana and Yuji defining terms such as a "torch" and other things talked about in the series.
There was also a new shana-tan omake but it ran for just over 2 minutes, actually to be precise...it's titled as "Banjou no Caimelsan". It mainly focused on Wilhelmina talking about something that I didn't really understand (though I think she said she was hungry again like in the other omakes) and Shana made a small appearance near the end. Alastor's journey was stretched too lol. There's a few screencaps I made below.

The OST will probably include shortened versions of the two songs like typical anime OSTs, but yes, the contents should be different as they would be including music from the movie.
I've gone through a couple of Google searches but have unable to find a tracklisting just yet, I'm afraid. I will post it here if I find one if someone doesn't get to it first.
Generally, how long does it take for a fansub of a movie to be available? SnS comes out on the 21st, so when would be a good estimation of the date it'll be subbed?

No, not everything is a recap. The movie is an adaptation of the first novel. The events portrayed in the anime for the first novel is not identical to what actually happened in the first novel.

Cool Thank for the info.So I guess I would order the dvd lol :D
The DVD version will hold 90 minutes of movie footage, that's 30 minutes more from what the theatrical audiences got for their ticket. The special edition (which I've preordered) will have two DVDs with both the 90 and the 60 minute version. Personally, I can't wait for September 21st. Most pages have a link that will switch the page to its English counterpart. It is fairly straightforward if you ask me.

But if you buy limited edition, not the regular edition, you would get something extra: Bonus disc with staff interview, short anime "Shakugan no Shana tan Gekijoban ver," promotional footage and more. This info was posted somewhere in the forum. I can't remember where.

They don't ship all things internationally though (like games). But in terms of DVDs and manga, I was only unable to purchase an AIR DVD this one time and haven't had any other problems since then.
Personally I've switched to HMV (http://www.hmv.co.jp) in March for R2 DVDs and J-Pop CDs because Amazon JP stopped offering their Economy Shipping (cheap shipping), leaving only the ridiculously expensive DHL shipping option available for international customers. HMV offers comparable discounts and cheap(er) EMS shipping. Their shopping system is completely translated and most of their products' pages as well.

Yeah its the same score from the series. This is kinda nice though, originally we had one soundtrack, and then three assorted albums for the musical score --- now we have one huge soundtrack.
I'll probably order, have a few other soundtracks i need to catch up with at the moment.
So, listening to the soundtrack to the movie now, and it does have a few new pieces of material --- some rather good stuff, which i look forward to hearing in the movie. As for the BGM tracks from the TV series.. not sure if its just me, though they do sound like they've been re-recorded.
Great stuff, just what i'd expect from a movie version of the story.

As for English subs, well I'd giv'em a little more time. It's a 90-minute movie ( hopefully they'll grab the extended version for subbing ), and since lots of fansubs take 1-2 days to complete a 20-minute episode, it might take at least a week before we start seeing some subs out. But again, the quicker the better :D

Ordered the limited edition of the movie DVD from CDJapan a few days ago and it was shipped today (yay!). Cost me over $120AU but it's worth it for me. I thought I had almost missed out on getting the first press edition that comes with a bonus poster as they put my items on hold when they needed my approval on an updated shipping charge and all the first press editions were sold out when they notified me. Luckily I emailed them and got a reply saying my item is the first press edition so I'm happy.
I've yet to get the movie soundtrack for it though, so I'll probably order it sometime later but I'm disappointed that the piano rendition of "Hishoku no Sora" isn't on it and it'll probably never see the light of day now. Can't wait to see the new shana-tan on the bonus disc lol.

The movie was nothing special more so I was annoyed by the fact that they completely ignored the the scene where Shana sleeps in Yujis bed, so just it get replaced by Yoshida and her stupid cookies. Also I wanted a coffee scene as well!
Overal, its really nothing great but a few cut short Shana scenes and a few additional Yoshida scenes... Also the last battle was done differently and I liked it better. The best thing about this movie is that I didnt wasted my money on buying it.
TV series are better than it (with an exception of the last battle). Even the animation isnt all that better than TV series.
With the caveat that I just quickly browsed through it, stopping on the interesting parts... I really liked the changes they made to a few scenes (especially the Yukari ones), as well as completely torching all the Ramies stuff and assorted long/boring exposition. Pretty much the entire final episodes between Margary, Shana and Friagne were totally reworked too. Most of the first half looked 100% ripped from the series though, completely down to the halfassed 'fight' scene between Marianne and Shana.
Super omega 260 cap barrage.
http://blog.seiha.org/?p=344
While the first bit of the director's cut was largely the same, I did notice a couple of subtle differences slipped in here and there.
Things I liked:
-the way they show a fuzetsu materializing
-the fight scenes
-music
-redone Yukari / Kazumi scenes, including the bit with the photo (Shana's censored face was so funny) and Kazumi talking to Shana and then Shana owns her, albeit differently
Unfortunate details:
-removal of the coffee scene
-rehashed a lot of stuff
I'm rather curious about how many scenes were rehashed for the theatrical cut. If I recall correctly, I think someone noted that the theatrical version started off after the first fight and such.

I've gotten an impression that they tried to make Yuji more distant to Shana and closer to Yukari than in TV. Basically because Shana scenes were cut and Yukari scenes were changed to give her more focus than in TV animation. And Being a Shana fan, I didn't like it all that much.
The last battle scene was good though.

I've always felt sorry for poor Yukari (anime). The photo scene made me . Again...
But the Shana-tan bonus was great. Absolutely.
Can anyone make a comparison to the original material and point out whether the TV series or the movie was more faithful story-wise? My copy of the movie is still shipping. ;p

I haven't seen the movie yet, but from screenshots, the movie seems to be more faithful.
In the novel (1), Friagne has more dolls, that chain treasure, shoots Shana, gets barbecued by Alastor, and Yuuji was kidnapped during the middle. The TV didn't have these, but the movie seems to have it.
In the movie, there were various Kazumi scenes, Yukari  scenes, and Margery scenes that did not appear in the novel.

Just watched it. The battles indeed are far better than the anime and Yuji actually of good use! The sequence of events seem to make better sense as well.
Shame they skipped the coffee scene - would have only taken around 2 minutes. I can understand why Shana and Marjorie didn't duel it out though...would take too long!
I was hoping for better animation but it's about the same standard as the anime. Since it's a movie afterall, I was hoping for more colours to take the standard closer to Ghibli. The CGI is much improved over the anime series nonetheless which was good to see.

A lot of people are saying it's pretty close to the TV series. I offer my own opinion that it is drastically different in terms of quality.
I rewatched the TV series shortly before watching the movie, so I had it fresh in my mind. The movie's first half is more or less taken straight from the TV with cuts and small additions here and there, most notably the new Yoshida scenes and redrawn Shana in almost every cut. If you don't see it, compare the eyes.
Once they left the TV realm, the animation quality actually took a rather impressive boost in terms of detail. Perhaps the framerate was not too much better, but there were certainly more flames, more embers, and in general more background details. If the color palette was lacking, it was because this is Shana, not a Miyazaki film. It's meant to be both dark and flamelit.

Well that sucks since I found Yukari very annoying in the TV series I was hoping she have less screentime in the movie.

wait, you mean Hirai Yukari?
didn't she have less screentime already? in both TV and Movie, she was killed by the Rinne on episode one so i think a couple more seconds or minutes of screentime from the movie is ok. But, as a Yukari fan it's still unfair >.>

My copy of the limited edition DVD was delivered today! Yay! I watched about half of the theatrical cut before dozing off since I haven't had much sleep since yesterday morning. Gonna rewatch it sometime later but the parts that I saw, I noticed they added some new bits and pieces in the fight scenes (most particularly the one between Shana and Marianne). Couldn't help but feel like the movie was rushed through but I guess it's because I've seen the TV series already that made me feel like that.
I gotta say the packaging of the DVD is great and it's heavy too with the extras that comes with it like a whole booklet of character sketches and designs and a separate booklet of promotional art drawings. They also included a 4 frame film reel of a random scene in the actual movie as well. The first press poster is also kind of big as well and it's the same picture that's used as the front cardboard slipcase for the DVD inside.
I just checked out the bonus disc of materials and it contains a 30 minute making of/behind the scenes of the movie, the premiere of it and the anime convention held at Akihabara that featured Shakugan no Shana as well as theatrical trailers, promo spots and interviews. There's also a new 6 minute shana-tan of the movie. I guess the producers and writers are running out of jokes for the first season as many of them weren't really outrageously hilarious, just a few of them made me laugh but the rest I was just staring blankly at it. There wasn't any sexual jokes in this one although the closest came to Yuji and panties. I took a few screencaps of the shana-tan omake below.

Oh yeah, I also received this Shana DJCD where it's claimed that you can only get this with the DVD if you pre-ordered the movie. It contains the Japanese VA's of Shakugan no Shana on a special radio program for the movie I think and it runs for 30 minutes.

There's also one where you can also get a special 3D card from pre-ordering it but I didn't get it with my order. I think obtaining the 3D card depends on where you pre-ordered the DVD. I ordered mine from CDJapan and they had a poster as their special first press item.

I originally found out about the card from doing a search on Yahoo Japan Auctions and the DJCD and the card were being put up. The seller stated both were special extras that came with the DVD if you pre-ordered the movie. That's also claimed in this blog (http://blogs.dion.ne.jp/kuwarin/archives/6228221.html#more) as well (scroll down to the fifth picture to see the card). I don't know where you would get the card though or which place has that but both places I found it from have claimed they're special pre-ordered DVD extras.

Whaaa the movie was awesome!
The fight was just drop dead drool!! unlike most anime movies which seems to end in failure due to the lack of action after all that build up, shana the movie lived up to more than what i expected :D
seeing yukari coming back was awesome but dying off again basically had the same impact as the TV series - yep it was painfull!! ;___;
The way friagne die, i am sure it was different than the TV series (memory fuzzes out here) O.O but based on what i remember i would say i prefer this end better :D shana showed us what she is really like at the end but putting in that humors gag - she knew yuuji wasnt going to die XD
insert song + end = drool - much better that just listening to the track on its own when you have the visuals there ;)
Why is Shana's face in the photo censored?
I don't know how to put it into words, but I'd say that the general gist of it was to give the viewers the same kind of reaction as what Yuji had, that Yukari had become someone else out of the blue and that person was apparently Shana (when you see Shana at Yukari's desk the next morning). It probably also reinforced the fact that Shana had "successfully" taken over Yukari's role because everyone's memory of what had been Yukari was now Shana.
Arr, my movie package arrived today. This is probably one of the nicest single releases in my collection as of now. The three-disc DVD casing has truly wonderful art, the movie tape cut-out was a nice surprise (I got four frames of a scene with Yoshida collapsed infront of a sofa) as well as the movie poster. The storyboard copy and special booklet were nice additions as well. Well worth its money, I'd say. Now off to watch it. :D

Many thanks for SS-Eclipse for another wunniful sub.
I have to say I didn't enjoy the movie at all when I compare it to the series. On its own it would have been okay, but since I just finished SnS the series is too fresh in my mind.
I just felt that everything was so watered down. I realise that it is a movie so they can't fit everything in, but all the scenes just felt to me pale in comparison. For example take the Hunter blowing in Marian, I just can't see that happening. I liked how he had many dolls available to fight, but I would have thought it much better if Marian grabbed Shana so that Friagne could shoot her. But then I would have expected him to not shoot her and for Marian to willingly blow herself up to save her master. Instead the action in the movie made their relationship seem wet instead. I much preferred how he got lost in himself in the series and didn't even realise how Marian sacrificed herself for him.

The movie was pretty much a very nice addition.
Giving back the details of the novel, it was much more enjoyable though some details weren't possible to add, considering the time constraint
I pretty much liked they actually give Yukari and kazumi (keeps using first name people :heh:) screentimes. We got already tons of Shana in the anime (before you ask, i prefer shana, but that doesn't mean the other girls should be underwhelmed)
The bad side of it is the fact Shana looks "deredere" a bit too quickly, but that's fine, considering that they stuffed tons of things in the movie already
Yuuji, losing his "character development" from the anime gets good points as well, with his actual interventions and the like.
Friagne and Marianne relationship is MUCH better fleshed out, and giving many more details. I largely prefer the movie in that aspect, considering how poorly, script and animation wise, friagne battle was.
as for the quality, much like people said, the first part was really a "rip off" like, though the quality was certainly improved a lot (especially the eyes and hair), though the design was not that constant (in some scenes, Shana's front, and space between her eyes are bigger. but that's rare)
The animation (especially the battles) was really TOP NOCHT. Far less still shot (remember the ugly still shot when Friagne was about to shoot them until shana use the shard glass? well), and it is really a good thing.
The BGM didn't exactly strike anything better or worse than the anime, so.
a very good adaptation, though i think "newbies" will be a bit lost. The movie is still a but fast paced, and you feel the rush.
But it really worth this "remake".
I never saw the series, but a friend of mine made me watch this anyway. I expected that it wouldn't be very interesting to me, but the animation was nice, so I thought I wouldn't fall asleep watching it, at least. I was suprised and impressed! This movie stands great on it's own. Really kept my eyes peeled from beginning to end. It didn't even seem like a compilation of the original, lengthy story, but rather a prequel, something like the story of where Shana got her name from....only realised the truth by looking at this thread. Great movie.

Imagine my embarrassment searching for a shana sub-forum this whole time... :heh:
Ah but the movie was good. Its been awhile since I saw the series but I got a very big deja-vu from the first half or so. I'm going to guess that was mostly recycled from the series...But all and all it all came together nicely.
Poor movies never do get enough time to tell a complete story like full series do, but I think this one did a good job of getting the important parts across as well as having some very nice eye candy action.

Although this movie is abit rushed, it explains about the plot-hole in Friagne's fight and why Alastor chose Shana as a container to reside within.
I liked the ending and the bath scene (^^). The ending shows a good part of Shana actually lying about not knowing about the Reigo Maigo inside Yuuji, I find that hiliarious.
I'm glad Yoshida is actually been given chances to show her character abit. I can't wait till Season 2 where Yoshida x Shana going at it again. :P

Yoshida..didn't achieve much of anything in the movie. The final fight was done really well. I watch the anime long ago, but I suppose this is the only time we get to "clearly" see Alastor's true form, which is pretty much what I would picture him to be.

Well I enjoyed the movie. Did like the fight with Friagane with the usage of a few Hougu and really pushing Shana x Daw to the brink. Some good stuff considering they worked it all into an hour and a half. Go Alastor though completely wasting Friagane.

No, he yelled it to prompt Shana to cast Fuzetsu
At first I thought the same, i.e. it was actually Shana who created the Fuzetsu, but if you check that scene in detail probably Yuuji did that himself somehow.
After all, the Fuzetsu is very small, lasts for just a few seconds and after that Yuuji is completely drained (which would make no sense in the movie, as Friagne doesn't use him as a power of existence source or anything).

All I can remember is that I havent seen that fight, bath scene lol, ending
Just watched the movie, it does have some minor differences compare to the tv series. Not a very big booha if ya miss the movie but the movie does make alittle more sense than the tv series
The movie was amazing, everything was done so well. It was nice to refresh my memory of Shana before the second season, but it was so much more as well. The visuals and animations were splendid, Shana looked even more beautiful than the usually does, and Yoshida was perhaps even cuter.
The Friagne arc, with a few alternations, made a good stand-alone experience. It seemed they made Friagne a little more impressive, which is good, because I thought he was an interesting villain. That joke Shana pulled at the end was pretty damn mean, Yuji sure has it tough.

I was expecting a recap of the later half of Shana, but the movie was for the first. I have just one thought: Most l33t anime battle scene I've seen in a long time. Major, MAJOR props to the staff. Also, Shana was Shana, but Yuuji was also much better. I just wish season II would be just as good:D.

Out of the events that happened in Shana I, I only liked the first arc(Friagne) and Shana's past arc. The rest felt like trashy filler to me. Too rushed, and not well developed etc.

Come to think of it, how does Yuji's power of existance get drained out so much until he was near to disappearing? Is it because he casted Fuzetsu himself? Or he activated the antiframe ring using his power of existence to protect him from the frame of Alastor?

I would rate this movie between an 8 and 9, but since I almost totally forgot what the first season is about, I'll give it a 9 for refreshing my memory. I really enjoyed the ending too; it was a good, dramatic fight. Usually bad guys have pawns and such and it's really unique in my point of view that Friagne and Marian had some kind of connection there. Of course, all of this is in the TV series also, but I just like pointing that out.
Overall, I do miss the romantic drama but the movie was very much to the point and summarized things nicely. Kazumi is so cute and I was sad that she didn't get more screen time. Of course for every movie I think it left out many things, but I think that if I watched this movie first, I would love it. It was exciting from the beginning to end, so 9/10, which is higher than my rating of the TV series itself.

First impression: Oh, hey, Yuji can cast Fuzetsu? That's pretty cool.
But then with that shockwave out of Shana as the barrier becomes complete, I thought that Shana was responsible after all. Else, all you have to do is shout "Fuzetsu"? I gotta try that some time. :heh:

Well in the anime, Yuji was shooted by Friagne with his hougu gun, thus Yuji's power of existence was drained. But in the movie, it was not clear on how Yuji's power of existence got drained.

overuse of the anti-flame ring to protect him from being killed by Alastor/Alastor's blast?
there's plenty of probable explanations.
The main factor that i love about this movie, is how much it goes into detail about Friagne --- which is of course what i expected, when first hearing the news about a movie that would retell these events. Seeing how he was effected by his love for Marianne.
Just this movie alone makes him my favourite character from the series, even more.
hmm I was kind of disapointed by this recap, not to mention, recap of only the first arch ... Yuji becomes lame and wimpy on the last arches of the first season and that alone prevented me watching the movie or getting eager for the second season .. and than a recap?
However I must say that Yuji farewell was interestingly different from the series to make me wonder if they will try to make Yuji less of a wimpy and more usefull on the second season - so, although this was only a recap, I would say I liked the small changes enough to give me hope for the second season =D

If you are still having troubles with the h264 then I advise you download the avi which is always harsubbed. The mkv format of h264 is merely a container and I believe the subs and video are individual from each other and merely played simultaneously when you play the whole mkv file.
If the issue is with the codec then i advise you get the combined codecs pack to play most videos. If you already have that then make sure your you've turned the sub on.. Right click on the green arrow in your systems tray, when you are playing it and there should be the option of english subs...
If that doesn't work then yea go to the link relentless provided..

Finally took the time to watch the movie.
As a novel reader, YES! This is how Shakugan no Shana should have been made. Faithful and true to the Shana-verse that author Takahashi has envisioned.
Novel Shana has an air of maturity and insecurity combined, while anime Shana is mostly insecure. The movie has given us back our Shana.
In the anime, Margery and Marco's introduction seemed forced (because she wasn't suppose to appear until later) and her presence looked irrelevant in the fight against Friagne, no such problem exists here. By taking Rami out of the equation, the character dynamic between them and Shana changes considerably. It was refreshing to see them working together and Margery's presence this time did not look out of place.
Yuji was now even more useful as the mysterious Mistes than he was in the anime, again, restoring his "usefulness" as mentioned in the novel.
A sad insert song for the real Hirai Yukari's demise. But it was cool seeing her image in Yoshida's photo being replaced by that of Shana. Speaking of Yoshida, she did get some scenes, but overall, her role is relatively small in this story. Sato and Tanaka (and Ogata) didn't even have speaking roles, but that's expected.
Just the inclusion of the following scenes makes a novel reader jump with joy:
- Yuji insisting on calling "Hirai Yukari" Shana. This distinction is important to him, because he refuses to forget the real Yukari.
- Friagne holding Yuji as hostage, and Shana actually hesitating to slice him. Shana beginning to have feelings for "a mere Torch".
- Friagne shooting Shana with his Hougu gun, causing Alastor to physically manifest himself, and then proceeding to burn Friagne into a crisp. - AWESOME
Oh, and the awkward "cameos" by Wilhelmina in weird locations around the world was just hilarious. :D
Who wants to bet the second movie would focus on novel vol 2: Shana vs Margery?
Perhaps JC STAFF should concentrate their resources on doing a series of Shana movies instead of with the Second Series. Though this is not to say the Second Series is bad, but the movie did a much better job in respect to the Shana-verse as read in the novels.
Extrapolating from the above, here's my take on the series of movies, should there be one:
Movie 2: Novel vol 2 - Shana vs Margery over Rami's life
Movie 3: Novels 3 and 4 - Shana vs the Aizen siblings, and the beginning of the Shana vs Yoshida rivalry as well
Movie 4: Novels 6 and 7 - Shana vs Professor, Khamshin meets Yoshida
Movie 5: Novels 8 and 9 - Wilhelmina comes to destroy the Reiji Maigo inside Yuji, for some specific purpose
JC STAFF can also do a series of prequel movies:
Prequel 1: Novel 5 - Birth of Shana, fleshing out anime episodes 14-16
Prequel 2: Novel 10 - The Great War - chronicles Shana's predecessor
Perhaps JC STAFF is trying to gauge the success of Series 2 in order to consider whether to make further movies?
After all, the Fuzetsu is very small, lasts for just a few seconds and after that Yuuji is completely drained (which would make no sense in the movie, as Friagne doesn't use him as a power of existence source or anything).
I'm sorry to say that you're are completely wrong. This scene follows the novel in its entirety, which clearly says
"In a very short time where one doesn't even have time to think, Shana has instinctively followed Yuji's instruction (to activate her Fuuzetsu)."
So it was Shana that activated the Fuuzetsu. Never once in the novel have I seen Yuji been able to activate one himself.
The reason Yuji seemed spent was simply because Friagne kept on ringing his bell, chipping away at Yuji's flames. Though neither he nor Friagne would thought that Yuji would restore his total HP, sorry total flame amount come midnight.

Yap, I have to agree with you, Kinny Riddle. The sequence of events in the movie makes more sense.
Why would you propose for the movie to be broadcasted? In tv?

If you are still having troubles with the h264 then I advise you download the avi which is always harsubbed. The mkv format of h264 is merely a container and I believe the subs and video are individual from each other and merely played simultaneously when you play the whole mkv file.
If the issue is with the codec then i advise you get the combined codecs pack to play most videos. If you already have that then make sure your you've turned the sub on.. Right click on the green arrow in your systems tray, when you are playing it and there should be the option of english subs...
If that doesn't work then yea go to the link relentless provided..
It's an issue on your computer, and not with the file, as the H.264 version does have subs. I recommend the Playback Help (http://forums.animesuki.com/forumdisplay.php?f=23) forum for some guidance.
Thanks for your help.:D I'll try them out. Why does the XviD take up so much more space than the h264? Is it because of the quality or is it because it's the director's cut version. Either way, I'll be maintaining my download on the XviD. Nonetheless, I'd still like to know.

Excuse me? I have no idea what you're talking about. Whoever said anything about the movies being shown on TV? When I said "series of movies", of course I mean that they are to be shown in cinemas (as with most anime movie adaptations). Think of it like the series of Spiderman movies or X-Men movies.

Why does the XviD take up so much more space than the h264?It's because H.264 is a newer technology that, basically, can fit the same quality of video in a smaller file (or, better quality video in the same sized file). This is why you see a lot of groups moving to it these days.

Okay. Airing these movies at cinemas? Don't you think it requires a lot of budget to do so?

Erm... I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you are not familiar with the movie culture in Japan. Their cinemas regularly show anime movies. That is why they're called movies in the first place.
High-budget anime episodes that première only on TV, are called OVAs (original video animation). Most are only one-shot episodes, but some can be several episodes long (usually not weekly). Examples include Hellsing Ultimate, FMP!TSR:OVA - A Day in the Life of a Captain, Today in Class 5-2, etc...
For anime movies, some examples include the Naruto movies, the Bleach movies, the Full Metal Alchemist movies, the Inukami movie, the Shakugan no Shana movie, etc... There is really a lot of variety; especially since I have not mentioned the anime movies that are not based on a TV-series.
Yes, it requires a lot of budget, but the series is usually profitable enough for them to make the investment back via DVD sales.
Cheers.

Aren't OVAs supposed to be "released directly without a TV premiere"?

Aren't OVAs supposed to be "released directly without a TV premiere"?I'm pretty sure he meant "High-budget anime episodes that première only on DVD".
(That being said, nowadays, nearly every "OVA" gets some sort of pre-screening, whether it's at an event, on a premium satellite channel, Pay Per View, or Internet streaming. It's just too tight of a market nowadays, and they need all the exposure they can get.)
Perhaps JC STAFF should concentrate their resources on doing a series of Shana movies instead of with the Second Series.
While I'd gladly fork out the money to buy all these DVDs, this would never happen.

I figured so as well.
Well, DVD now. There are other formats as well (older and newer), but DVD is the most common.

I understand your point. Watching movie is definitely a better viewing experience. Better animation quality, more faithful to the novel, who will not want these things? But asking for 7 Shana movies to cover 10 novels or first 21 episodes in first season is a bit excessive. One or two Shana movies would be okay, but 7 movies? I don't know whether it is feasible for the producer to do so.

Hey, I never said JC STAFF should make a series of movies if they can't. Maybe I wasn't clear before, what I said was if such a plan is to go ahead, JC STAFF would probably base the feasibility of this plan upon the success of the DVD sales of the Second Series. I never said they should do it all in one go, but rather one at a time. And did you not read Skane's reply?
No disrespect since you did not use any emoticons and I could not read your mood, why are you so eager to shoot down my wishful thinking? I can dream on like a mad-man, can't I?

I guess that I own you an apology, Kinny Riddle. Sorry.
The Shakugan no Shana-tan movie was splendidly hilarious.:)
My favorite segments were Kazumi's:
1. Laughing out aloud like a nutcrack when she toyed with the idea of giving the her home made snacks to Yuuji before Hirai did.
2. Bitching at Shana-tan when after the long pause Shana ate the snacks.
3. Friagne vomiting the ace cards knock me out of my chair with irreverent laughter.
4. And how Yuuji about wiping off his own sweat with Hirai's panties.:heh:

Pardon me for asking, but has the Shana-tan special that comes with the movie itself been subbed by anyone yet? Just in case I haven't noticed. I know SS-Eclipse has released the movie sub.

You mean the Shana-tan special is bundled together with the movie torrent?
Edit: My bad, I TOTALLY did not see the "tan" in their file name. Boy they should use a hyphen. I knew I had their movie torrent a few days ago.

I would not call movie faithfull though.. Few scenes were more faithfull than anime but it skipped and ignored quite a few scenes which in the final result made it much less faithful than anime series.

You can't expect the movie to put everything, especially if it the anime already covered it.
Considering the pace of the movie, it is quite a good thing they could shrunk Friagne arc into a mere size of a movie.
And frankly, if you just put the anime tid bits (mainly shana parts, which is probably why they skipped in the movie), it does the good job. (the whole deal with friagne makes this adaptation worthing it, unlike the dubious one in the anime)

You when you think about it - Shana is the character that suffers most from the movie cuts due to time restrains..They skipped quite a few scenes of her. The whole Friagne fight was done much better in the movie.
I just wish they wouldn't have skipped so many Shana scenes though.

I always thought Yoshida was an afterthought by the writers in the anime (she only starts talking to Sakai and acting interested around episode...4 was it? After he helps her up when she falls on the track since she has a condition where she has a hard time breathing.) But they realized she wasn't seriously competitive enough so they corrected this in the film by making her interested in him right off the bat.
*Possible Spoilers*
Yeah the fuzetsu looks awesome now--it's more the way that I would visualize it (as the edge of a giant swirling black hole somehow disconnected with our reality). Used to be there was a flash of yellow (a shockwave), then everything would go purple...basically the only change was a palette change within a sphere, and a uniform smooth sphere for the fuzetsu. While I did like the idea of everything inside being basked in a soft twilight, I really like the swirling bits of dark matter that circle the fuzetsu now, and expand until they've covered everything, even though it looks less instantaneous all that black spreading looks more ominous.
Just what does the Yuji's father do? I had assumed that he was dead, but now he seems to be exploring the Gobi desert and climbing mount Everest. I get the impression he'll actually serve a role, in a twist, and I speculate that he could be an arcahaeologist father as in the series CCS. By the way, Yuji DID cast that fuzetsu during the fight right?
One more thought: Anyone else think that Shana sounded like a imp when she laughed at the end?

Speaking of this....wow...that part with the horror parody actually freaked me out...=.=''

No, Shana was the one who casted the Fuzetsu. Yuuji only yells her to do so, and as you can see, her body vibrated, and the spell started from her as the center of the Fuzetsu.
Second season implies that Yuuji isn't able to do a Fuzetsu yet, so.
This movie is great! It refreshes my memory about the 1st season just in time for the 2nd season. As expected, the animation is superb (at least compared to TV series) and it only covers the Friagne arc. Given the limited time they managed to compress it to 1.5 hours and get a good ending. Friagne's defeat is one thing that I hate in the TV series, here they did it right and eliminated him in a more dramatic manner. Will buy this DVD soon as I have budget for it.
I also liked how they presented Hirai Yukari's vanishing with a wonderful insert song. It creates a more powerful emotional impact than the TV series. I also liked the song. Now I'm considering of purchasing the CDs.

He is correct. If you look at 1:15:22, you can see a circle wave around her who was as the center of the Fuzetsu. Good observation, I thought Yuuji did it all this time...

I totally must find an anime streaming site online somewhere that has it to watch quite freely :)
