Not many I'd say considering I can pronounce it right and Japanese isn't my native language....but then again, my native language is spanish so pronouncing Japanese isn't that hard :heh:
Also, I'm part of the people that didn't like the whole "Data Overmind" translation, it seemed too weak of a name to me compared to say, the Integrated Data Sentient Entity(Baka-Tsuki's name) or the The Intergral Data Thought Entity(I think this is the other translated name, can't remember :p )
Kogetsu Shirogane

"Data Integration Thought Entity" would be the other one I'm familiar with. Of course, due to the various translations, I simply refer to it as "Data thing" when mentioning it. :p

After the teaser chapter, my heart has been warming up to Asakura quite a bit. Previously I don't care about her that much since she played a pretty minor role in the stories. Now I am actually quite amused/fond of her obsession of killing Kyon.

I still don't really like her..never been too fond of her. Although I kinda wanted her to stab Kuyoh, just like she did to Kyon, but..:heh: I'm not big on knives.

For the record, as there are some of us who have chosen not to look at the teaser and are instead opting to wait until the full thing is released, that conversation constitutes a pretty major spoiler. :heh:

I really do hope that the quality of the release and the sales of the novel are enough for more anime seasons of Haruhi. ^_^

I've done some research today on the novel sales in Japan since the anime started in April 2006. Here is how the series has grown from a popular series to historic levels:
Reporting Date |Amount sold|Volumes|Amount Sold per Volume|Reporting Difference |Difference from 2006
Apr-06 | 1500000 | *7 | 214286
Dec-06 | 2800000 | *8 | 350000 | 87% | *87%
Dec-07 | 4300000 | *9 | 477778 | 54% | 187%
Dec-08 | 5300000 | *9 | 588889 | 23% | 253%
Feb-09 | 5600000 | *9 | 622222 | *6% | 273%
Jan-10 | 6000000 | *9 | 666667 | *7% | 300%
Apr-11 | 7000000 | *9 | 777778 | 17% | 367%
Jun-11 | 8000000 | 11 | 727273 | 14% | 433%

The first pressing of Surprise's Limited Edition contains 2 volumes and will be printed 513,000 times for 1,026,000 copies to be sold sometime near the end of this month and into next month.
And people on the internet say Haruhi isn't famous :heh: I say let's celebrate in honor of this information :heh: Nice job Koizumi

A new CM was placed on Kadokawa's youtube channel.

Link (http://youtu.be/0H24VqiiTsA)
As expected, no new information from this CM.
For those ordering the latest issue of Comptiqs, you will get a 2 special tumbler covers (one with Haruhi/Mikuru/Yuki and one with only the mysterious blue cover girl). Also, The Sneaker has updated their website (http://www.sneakerbunko.jp/). I believe I've read that they will be moving to an online/e-book format, but I cannot confirm that at this time. Those are the latest updates to Kadokawa's special Haruhi novel site (http://www.haruhikyougaku.jp/).
So, any news on if these are the last 2 novels? I kinda read on some magazine that it was the last 2, but not too sure if it is reliable.
I hope the series doesn't end yet...but then who (on this forum) doesn't? I mean, there are still so many loose ends to tie up!
Kogetsu Shirogane

That rumor again? While I'm pretty much okay with the series ending by this point, I'd imagine there's still more that can be done with it.
Actually doing something with Koizumi comes to mind.

I have been saying this for four years, but there's no indication that these are the final books of the series. They'd be marketing them as such if they were.

There is no confirmation that these are the last novels. Likely by the end of the weekend we shall have the first spoilers to enable us to know that these are not the last of the series. Like Kaisos said, it'd be over everywhere if these were the last ones.
Also I'm curious since we're close to the release date and shipments should be going out. Was the book you picked up Disappearance or Rampage as the latter is being shipped to retailers now.
Edit: Not worth a double-post, so here's the official cover for volume 14 of the manga. It'll be released one day after Surprise's LE set (May 26th, 2011):

No, it's still available from Amazon Japan (http://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/4044292108/), CD Japan (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/series_list.html?sid=1250), HMV (http://www.hmv.co.jp/en/product/detail/3990366), bk1 (http://www.bk1.jp/product/03373664), and likely a Kinokuniya if there is one nearby. All of those places will ship internationally from Japan.
Keep in mind though that if you order from AmazonJP to the USA, it will be almost $60 total, the shipping alone is about $39. I don't know how much it costs to other countries though.

Kadokawa is really pushing the marketing on the next novels! First was the trailer through Akiba for 8 days combined with an ad in the Yomuri morning newspaper and an ad at the Akiba Japan Rail station and pamphlets being handed out on 1/29. Next was a CM followed by bookstore ads (even a promotional video). Then advertisements on race cars and news reports of the record-breaking first pressing came out. Now, through this month and the beginning of next month, most (if not all) of the Kadokawa Group Publishing periodicals will have a feature about Haruhi (http://www.haruhikyougaku.jp/magazine.html) in it. Here's the list:
Newtype June Edition- Haruhi Racing feature
Comptiqs June Edition - Attached Haruhi tumbler inserts (Haruhi/Mikuru/Nagato and one of Volume 11's cover girl) and Nagato pinup drawn by Lucky Star's Kagami Yoshimizu

Is this a novel version of the Rainy Day episode at the end of the first anime season, or something else entirely?

The short story bundled with the Limited Edition set of The Surprise of Haruhi Suzumiya (First) (Latter) (volumes 10 and 11) is entitled Rainy Day and will be released next week.
The episode released in 2006 was entitled Someday in the Rain and was originally an anime-only story before being printed in the August 2006 edition of The Sneaker. It, along with the two Haruhi Theatre Acts have not been compiled into a novel.

Ah, that's news to me. So Someday in the Rain is now officially novel-canon then? (I always believed it was canon, it's just that this is the first time the author put the story to print.)

Hmm, that's odd. AFAIK, Someday in the Rain was rather unique in that it had scenes where Kyon wasn't explicitly present, and therefore would've been strange in a first-person perspective story. I figured that was reason enough for it to remain anime-only, but I guess I was wrong.

well isnt that basically another usual SOS day. there is nothing major in the story anyway.

well it been 3 years since we saw sasaki. so just thrown some fan service to service the fun (pun intended)
Makes you wonder what stopped Kyon from tapping that...
Heh.
Middle school friends maybe? Also now he's surrounded by three good looking girls (with a fourth and possible fifth..all A- or better on the scale) as well as Itsuki the fabulous.
I mean, he's not tapping Haruhi even though it has been suggested such a thing might end all suffering in the universe (exaggeration...maybe). He's not tapping Nagato even though she changed the Universe for him (maybe). He isn't tapping Mikuru (though he clearly want to) because of something...heat death of space-time or something like that.

Oh geez, I just noticed something else. Her uniform is different, and the only reason I can think of for that would be that it's her middle school uniform. And I really hope that's not the case because... Ew.

I would imagine he's not tapping Mikuru because she expressly forbids it, he's not tapping Yuki because she would be so compliant that it just wouldn't feel right, he's not tapping Haruhi because he's intimidated by her, and he's not tapping Itsuki because he still wants to maintain a semblance of straightness despite not tapping the other three.

I suspect that Mikuru Big is pulling out all the stops. While she called Kyon Senpai, I think that she could also call him and Haruhi "Momma and Papa." Much like Chibiusa in "Sailor Moon." If that is so, we will probably get a girl in the other Time Line who can call Kyon and Sasaki "Momma and Papa."

Technically, this would have been less than a year before Melancholy begins, so the difference between "drool at Haruhi in Melancholy" and "drool at Sasaki in Rainy Day" is a matter of numbers rather than a visible difference in appearance--I mean teenagers don't change that much visually in a single year unless it's the year in which they cross the puberty divide.

I guess that's fair. When I thought "middle school" I was thinking more like Tanabata Haruhi's age.

Keep in mind that the level of squick involved is all relative. Yes, the middle school "Tanabata Haruhi" was no more than 13 (probably only 12), but even the oldest primary character in the series, Tsuruya, is only 17, and that's only as of late, as she started the series at 16, like any normal Japanese second-year high schooler (I don't count Mikuru or the data interfaces in the discussion, as we don't know exactly how old she is in either form, and they are presumably all much younger than they appear). Over the majority of the series, most of the characters haven't been any older than 15, which makes them just as much jailbait in most countries as Imouto-chan (who certainly has her share of..."enthusiasts")...

No doubt. If the girls are drawn with bodies like they're in their twenties, it's hard not to react as though they are adults. I guess it's the same reason we don't have an issue with Tanaguchi rating Yuki an A-, despite us knowing as informed viewers (as you alluded to) that she's literally probably no more than three years old. You go based on appearance, and, to me, Sakaki has the appearance of a middle-schooler in that picture.
But still, regardless of age...
Really??

Oh, I have no problem with Taniguchi rating any of them anything. He's underage as well, after all, and Yuki (and the other interfaces) are designed to look and act their supposed ages, so you can't fault anyone for treating them as such. They're not even human, anyway, or even really biological, except physically, so the sexuality argument doesn't even apply in the same way.

Cool, what's in the fanbook?
The fanbook is as it says: a guide to the novel series. It'll feature some things from the new novels as well as some unreleased items from Tanigawa and Itou.
Today the official website (http://www.haruhikyougaku.jp/) updated with a new webpage. It states "Pray with Haruhi. When 15,498 desires come together, something good is bound to happen!".
The referred site (http://www.haruhikyougaku.jp/haruhinegai/index.html) allows you to send a message to the site (with one of the main SOS Brigade characters if wanted) or you can tweet your wish with the official hashtag #haruhinegai.
Edit: It's not worth a new post, but here's images of Vol 5 (Eng. version) that I received today:
http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg4/ultimatemegax/SDC13216edit.jpg
http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg4/ultimatemegax/SDC13218edit.jpg
2nd Edit: Overall I'd say the translation was well done. One mistake (switching between yen and dollars between stories) was all that I noticed. I did like the adaptation for Tsuruya to call Haruhi "Harls" instead of the original "Haru-nyan." Everything was put together well outside of that mistake. You should feel great in purchasing it!
And so.....
Here comes Surprise!
Apparently there was a promotion for preordering the Chinese books, and I managed to do that in time. Just picked it up today. No Rainy Day, there is something awesome...

chinese LN cover? or manga?

"Selling well" would be an understatement for the latest set of Haruhi novels. This is far from official (those numbers will be out Wednesday) but I'm hearing some GREAT news on the status of stores in Japan with the LE set.
To begin, I've heard rumors that some stores have already sold out of the set and some are already running low. The Melonbooks in Akiba is already down to half of their original set by the end of sales on Friday and Gamers's head store has gotten rid of the double screw seen here (http://blog-imgs-47.fc2.com/y/a/r/yaraon/305604668.jpg) and has had a decent chunk taken from the base as seen here (http://twitpic.com/5336ix).
Then we have this blog post (http://comicbookstore.blog39.fc2.com/blog-entry-1565.html) by a bookstore. They've checked and they sold approximately over 40% of their allotted stock on the first day alone. That one store has sold over 2000 copies of everything Haruhi already (manga, novels, extras, etc). What's even better is the clientele coming in and purchasing the set. Not only do you have men and women, you have salerymen, office ladies, housewifes, high schoolers, middle schoolers and more. They didn't have a break at all during that first day. They are highly concerned that they won't be able to make it through the weekend with their stock.
Kadokawa has already told that store that it's incredibly unlikely that they'll be sending more stock of the LE. I'm incredibly eager to see what the first week sales will be.

Does this mean we're going to get another Season of Haruhi? (hopefully with higher budget animation than the last one...)
Also. Someone NEEDS to find a high quality raw of that long image of all the rerelease Haruhi novels. The one featuring all the characters. I'm so annoyed that I haven't found a bigger version of that.

Didn't season 2 still print buckets of money, despite all the bitching?
I managed to buy a limited edition Haruhi (in Kinokuniya, US, LA).... I'm hiding it first until I can find a place to take a good picture of it.

I had to smile at the Evangelion reference given how many shout outs Kyon has given that in the anime. And of course how a select few accuse Nagato of being nothing more than an expy of Rei.
But being serious, I'm glad Haruhi is on top once again. And now, Kyon must not run away. :heh: OK, I just had to type that.

Yuki is more appealing to fans because her character development is more explicit than Rei's (and she's crazy powerful), but Rei is the better designed, more realistic character.

Given her position in the NGE story, that's arguable at best. Perhaps "more human" would be a better way to put it?

I think though Yuki is but one in a long line of replicas of Rei type character, she has earned herself more than enough distinction and interest to warrant her own unique identity.
Most of the Rei clones fail because they have nowhere near the level of detail and development that Rei had, as well as purpose.
For that I love both characters, and am glad Yuki can stand up on her own as a character.

Oricon (http://www.oricon.co.jp/rank/obb/w/) is reporting that Surprise's first press edition sold 47,311 copies this week to bring its two week sales to 388,495.
I'm somewhat disappointed, but that's still incredibly good for any light novel volume's second week. I'm curious if the online retailers have stored their copies and the normal bookstores can't get any more in until the regular edition.

I would expect that the lower sales this week stem in part from some places being sold out--they may only have sold about 75% of all printed copies, but a good fraction of that remaining 25% is likely being hoarded by online retailers and the like as Ultimate has said.
I finally got my legal copy of "The Rampage of Haruhi Suzumiya" today.

We can't blame Tanigawa for not putting out Surprise last year. He finished it last fall and it could have been released in Japan last November. Kadokawa thought to release it simultaneously throughout Asia, thus delaying the release by 6 months, as a way to prevent bootleg copies from being sold in those countries.

That's marketing for you; to promote the simultaneous release as a good thing, when in reality there had been a delay.
I don't suppose this is standard practice? But if they liked the outcome they might do this more often.

Sorry for double-posting, but I have gotten permission to post something.
In the 64 page booklet included in the LE first pressing of Surprise, the new editor-in-charge wrote about some interesting tidbits regarding the titles/cover of Melancholy as well as the cover illustrations of Disappearance and Wavering-Anger. That's great news for the franchise. I wonder if the release of Surprise and the marketing that Kadokawa has done to promote it also led to more sales of the first novel. Perhaps this may be a further clue that Kadokawa may want more Haruhi anime to keep up the excitement.
Since I don't want to double post, I'll add that I bought and read Rampage of Haruhi Suzumiya three weeks ago. Reading the original material for the Endless Eight and Day of the Sagittarius was interesting, and I loved Snowy Mountain Syndrome. I thought the change from Haru-nyan to Harls was a little awkward but I suppose it was the best way in English to show that Tsuruya likes to give people nicknames. So here's part I of what I'll be translating from Observation:
The Observation of Haruhi Suzumiya
Chapter 3: Question-and-Answers
Part I: Nagaru Tanigawa Collection
1. Of the Haruhi Suzumiya series which is the character you like best (or is most impressive)?
Haruhi. She's the beginning of it all and one day will be the end.
2. What's your favorite story?
If I had to say one it'd be Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody. Thanks to that story being written, I was able to compose Disappearance.
3. Are there any rules or guidelines you go by when you compose a title in the series?
Well, they have to all be The (blank) of Haruhi Suzumiya, but that (blank) has to correlate to something in the book. If I choose a title that's misdirecting, then that would give off a negative image.
4. How were you able to come up with Haruhi, Nagato, and Mikuru's characters?
They were unchanged from the beginning. As characters, Haruhi gives off a high-tension image, Nagato is more of a low tension character and somewhere in the middle is Mikuru. They all just happened to be like that.
5. Who do you think is the strongest between the aliens, time travelers, espers, and sliders?
That depends on the situation they're in. Don't forget that humans are pretty resilient too.
6.Please give some advice to any Haruhi cosplayers.
When performing as someone you like you have to be in the mental shape of the character.
7. Are there plans to introduce new characters in future works?
Classified information.
8. What ideas for future works have you thought about?
Very classified information.
9. Do you have any plans for the members of the SOS Brigade will do after graduation?
That's also classified information. Well, really I don't know myself.
10. Who do you think you most resemble in the SOS Brigade?
I'd have to go outside the Brigade and say Taniguchi. Ideally I'd like to be like Koizumi, but I don't think I'm suited to fulfill that spot.
11. Haruhi always keeps an eye on events that happen each season. Tanigawa-sensei, do you have any plans for this summer?
I tend to let the seasons pass without doing anything special in particular. Occasionally now I end up forgetting what month, date, or even day it is right now.
12. Please tell us what is the best summer you had forgotten about.
I suppose it would be the summer of my second year in high school. Instead of studying like I should have been doing, I was busy writing stories in my notebook. Even now I tend to blush when I think about it.
13. In the postscript for Intrigue, you wrote about "Strange enigmatic transmissions notes." Would you mind expanding on that for us?
When I was in middle school, I started a notebook that was full of joking things. When I had a joke for a story I would write it down. Eventually it became my everyday habit to think and write in that notebook. It's already been ten-odd years since I started that and through countless books. I'm sure if I read through them now they wouldn't be interesting…. or perhaps I should say that I shouldn't re-read them again. Whatever I wrote about is likely buried deep in the gaps of my memories by now.
14. What's your favorite genre of books?
Foreign sci-fi and Japanese classic mysteries.
15. What's your favorite type of game?
Strategy simulations and shooting games.
16. What's your favorite sport?
American football. Of course that's only watching, not playing.
17. What's your favorite food?
Spicy curry.
18. What don't you like to eat?
Raw eggs and eggplant.
19. What is your favorite brand of cigarettes?
As long as the smoke rises anything would be good for me.
20. What's your favorite kind of alcohol?
Beer.
21. What is your favorite movie?
Among other things, my favorites would be The Hidden and Killing Time.
22. Do you keep any pets?
While she's not male, I do have a tortoise shell cat. Already she's twenty years old now.
23. What kind of music do you listen to while writing?
I have to have a soundless environment while writing or else I can't concentrate.
24. What must you have beside you when you are writing?
Tea and a Japanese dictionary.
25. What do you do when you're discouraged when writing?
I lie down in bed or go take a bath.
26. What did you do when you were a student? Was there something like the SOS Brigade in your school?
I didn't have that type of experience at all. There wasn't anything like the SOS Brigade that I know of. To answer your first question, I thought preparing for the cultural festival was very fun.
27. Please tell us any special memories you had from your high school days.
You might be surprised, but there's none from those three years. The only thing I can remember is breaking the rules by coming on bike for those three years.
28. Do you have any memories from your school festivals?
The only thing I remember is the art club and another class that had a fried soba café. I wasn't able to enter that shop though.
29. What was your favorite subject in school?
World history.
30. Do you have any policies when you play mahjong?
Just don't disturb the field.
31. Up until now, what was the best game of mahjong that you remember?
On the last turn one time I was able to turn it around and get a little four winds yakuman.
32. How old were you when you rode a motorcycle for the first time?
I was about 22 when I rode my coworker's worn-out FZR.
33. What kind of motorcycles do you ride now?
Just a little while ago my bike was decommissioned, so I'm not riding anything now.
34. How old were you when you had your first love? What kind of person was she?
It was in kindergarten…. no, elementary school…. no, it was middle school when I met her. She was a little bit of an airhead if I remember. I can't remember anything else.
35. How old were you when you wrote your first story? What was it about?
It was in my second year of middle school when I wrote about my classmate N as a protagonist in a gag short story. Incidentally, he never got to see it.
36. Do you wear glasses, contacts, or do you go without eye correction?
Up until now I've went without, glasses, contacts (that I kept losing), and then glasses.
37. Is there anyone you're awaiting on your cell phone now?
I'm waiting to hear from Noizi Itou-san about using Haruhi for a charity event for the massive earthquake.
38. You were a manager for an apparel shop at one time if I remember. Do you have any stories from then?
I remember one girl who was a part-timer that came in and was talking on her phone. She got into a fight with her older brother and was late due to him.
39. Please tell us about the history of your pen name.
Well, already I'm starting to regret the specifics of it. Now what I chose as "Nagaru" ends up having to be written as "Ryuu." I'm already having to write myself as "Tanigawa Ryuu" in order to properly identify myself. Other than that, everything has been fine.
40. Please tell us what you think of the new head of the Sneaker Bunko editorial department.
After being married he's often truly happily boasting about his wife and dog. He's also got an interesting name too.
41. Was there anything that impressed you during the exchange of information with the new head?
During the correction of the manuscript, we were able to fix almost half of all the mistakes right there.
42. Are you a morning, afternoon, or evening person?
Easily a super late night person. Around midnight or at least after ten is when I most prefer it.
43. It's now May of 2011. Is there anything you really wish for now?
I'd like a robot maid who specializes in cleaning after cats and who can also help prepare me to ride the bullet trains.
44. What historical figure do you like best?
Cao Cao.
45. If it's possible to freely go to the past, what year would you go to and what would you do?
I'd go to the 1994 Imora Circuit race before the Sena machine ruined it.
46. Up until now, who would you say most influenced you? (excluding family)
My classmate Y-kun who I shared classes with from 4th year of elementary school until the first year of middle school.
47. What do you find yourself most enthused about in your spare time recently?
I arbitrarily think about historical riddles and try to come to my own conclusion for them.
48. Please tell us what you look forward to in the future.
I hope to continue working hard and trying my best not to be a bother to anyone.
49. What were your thought about the worldwide simultaneous release of [I]The Surprise of Haruhi Suzumiya?
It was an extreme honor. I never imagined when I submitted Melancholy to the Sneaker Grand Prize that it would win much less be immensely popular not only in Japan but around the world as well. I had only thought of a title about ten seconds before the due date when I submitted it and I was lucky that it became so popular. Fortune is truly an unpredictable thing.
50. Please give a message to the fans who are awaiting your next work.
To everyone reading, please continue living your life the way you think best. We'll all do our best from here on.

Those questions are so thourogh, I feel rude reading them.
But honestly, I feel kind of strange. Maybe it's because i'm a big fan or maybe its calcium deficency, but I'm sort of in awe. Nagaru Tanigawa always fascinated me. He came up with an amzingly unique story that I dream about most nights. How did the one little idea become the hopes and dreams of so many who want this life?
Maybe I just like him 'cause he likes Haruhi for the same reasons I do. I don't know. I always feel strange whenever I read the Author's Notes and inverviews. Not strange bad, but in a peaceful way.

9. Do you have any plans for the members of the SOS Brigade will do after graduation?
That's also classified information. Well, really I don't know myself.
That pretty much confirms that the Haruhi novels will not continue past Kyon and Haruhi's highschool graduation. Though there is no reason Mikuru can't graduate a year earlier.
1. Of the Haruhi Suzumiya series which is the character you like best (or is most impressive)?
Haruhi. She's the beginning of it all and one day will be the end.
There we go, folks. Haruhi is the Alpha and Omega, straight from the author's mouth.
Can we please kill the "Kyon is God" theory once and for all now?:heh:

And I think that's a good thing. Having an indefinite period for this series to go on would result in stagnation for sure. At most, I think a final epilogue that take place years later would be the last of it.

I think the "Kyon is God" theory has been losing steam lately anyway, although I've heard a more plausible theory that they're both Gods. Whatever. :p
Also, didn't Tanigawa once say that Nagato was his favorite? Maybe he changed his mind over the course of the last few years.
In any case, Haruhi is a blast to write, so I can see why he'd like her so much. :D

Well, I think Yuki as a character has advanced as far as she could go. Kyon will never return her feelings, so it is why everything Yuki is going to stall from now on. Yuki doesn't interact with anyone but Kyon, so if she can't advance her relationship with Kyon any further then she would get no more developments. It is time to bring in someone else to push the plot forward.
Yuki was liked by Tanigawa for her character develoment possibilities. But now that her story has been told, everyone had to learn to move on.

I suspect the few remaining Yuki/Kyon supporters out there who aren't crying themselves to sleep at this point would still contend with that. However, I would counter with saying that while further character development for Yuki is possible, it would be next to impossible for anyone, even Tanigawa, to pull off a Yuki/Kyon romance ending without it being terrible. The emotions required from Yuki would be seriously out of character.
Of course, Yuki shouldn't need a MAN to get more character development. Go feminism go!

Oh, I certainly am not suggesting Yuki need Kyon to exist and to have a life. However, since this book is written from Kyon's POV, Yuki DO need Kyon in order to exist in the book.
Feminism is all well and good, but anyone who doesn't interact with Kyon might as well be made of ether. It's the limits of the story telling method being employed. It is either Kyon or nothing.

Mmm. I don't know about that. I mean, if Haruhi found out about everything, it would kind of help Yuki. I think Haruhi would be expressivly grateful. And Yuki wouldnt have to hide. I think Suzumiya would make a great friend for Yuki.

Before I post part II, I have a brief correction of Part I:
The Observation of Haruhi Suzumiya
Chapter 3: Question-and-Answers
Part I: Nagaru Tanigawa Collection
37. What image is on your cell phone now?
That image that Noizi Itou-san drew of Haruhi for charity efforts for the Great Earthquake.
Now Part II of Chapter 3 is the Q&A of Noizi Itou:
The Observation of Haruhi Suzumiya
Chapter 3: Question-and-Answers
Part II: Noizi Itou Collection
1. Of the Haruhi Suzumiya series which is the character you like best (or is most impressive)?
I love all five SOS Brigade members. I couldn't possibly choose just one. My most impressive character is Sasaki. In Surprise, she was always one step above everyone else thus I drew many pictures of her.
2. What's your favorite story?
It has to be the first story Melancholy. It's the one book I think is most concentrated on just the SOS Brigade.
3. Are there any rules or guidelines you go by when you draw Haruhi illustrations?
When I draw Haruhi characters, I try to draw freely in order to capture the strong intentions of the characters in the images.
4. When designing Surprise's new character, Yasumi, what points were you thinking about in her design?
I went mostly by how it was described in the book: smiley face on her hair and wearing a very baggy uniform.
5. Please tell us any memories you have from designing Haruhi, Nagato, and Mikuru in Melancholy.
Miraculously I had no problems with designing those three. Almost instantly an appropriate image popped into my head. If I had any problems it was the difference in height (there is a slight difference) between Nagato and Mikuru.
6. We've seen the adult version of Mikuru. How do you think the grown-up version of Haruhi and Nagato would look?
Well, you get to see a glimpse of how Haruhi looks this time in Surprise. I have an idea of how that Haruhi looks, but right now it's stuck inside of my head….it's almost like a dream now (laughs). As for Nagato, I can't think of how she would grow older. I'd think an adult version of Nagato would look just like she does now (laughs).
7. Who do you think is the strongest between the aliens, time travelers, espers, and sliders?
Probably aliens, right? But they still stand no chance against Haruhi (laughs).
8. Please give some advice to any Haruhi cosplayers.
When I was designing her, the female uniform itself has this very vivid blue cloth came instantly to me. Don't forget that the neckline ends in a V in order to imitate the North High uniform.
9. Please tell us if you have spoken with Tanigawa-sensei about the events that happen from here on.
I get the sense that big events such like the ones that happened in Disappearance and Surprise will happen in the future. It's on the scale of things that involve the whole world.
10. Who do you think you most resemble in the SOS Brigade?
I can't say I resemble any of them. If I have to pick one it'd be Kyon. His soul's voice tends to penetrate fiercely.
11. Haruhi always keeps an eye on events that happen each season. Itou-sensei, do you have any plans for this summer?
I've not really decided on anything yet…. probably I'll end up doing normal summer activities (like going to the beach).
12. Please tell us any impressions you have of the Haruhi fans when you've given autographs.
I've seen both Japanese and international fans who both enjoy the works as well as seen all emotions from tears to smiling faces. It's very surprising yet wonderful at the same time. The fans were dancing to Hare Hare when I went to France! It was quite impressive.
13. Haruhi always keeps an eye on events that happen each year. Itou-sensei, do you have any big event you look forward to each year?
It'd have to be New Year's Day. That day I can choose whether I want to be very busy or slowly get through the day.
14. What's your favorite genre of books?
I like mysteries and scary stories.
15. What's your favorite type of game?
I haven't played many lately but I do enjoy playing RPGs.
16. What's your favorite sport?
If pushed I'd have to say indoor events. When I was in middle school I was on the badminton club, but I've not played in such a long time.
17. What's your favorite food?
I like spicy foods. Oh, and sweet or salty foods are good too.
18. What don't you like to eat?
I can't think of anything but I've not eaten sashimi yet.
19. Please tell us what your favorite item you've bought lately would be.
When I was in South Korea I went into a Banila co store and bought this hand cream. It's so smooth!
20. What creators are you taking notice of lately?
My schedule is too hectic to take note of people, but I know that mebae-san and Hidari-san have good taste.
21. Please tell us any movies you like.
I like horror movies; in particular vampire and gothic horror films.
22. Do you keep any pets?
I'd like to get a dog or cat but right now I have a Melopsittacus undulatus (parakeet).
23. What kind of music do you listen to while drawing?
I can hear anything and make progress, but quiet is nice too. I do like to listen to techno and pop genres though. M-flo, Nakata, and Sutaka bring good feelings to me.
24. What must you have beside you when you are drawing?
Eyedrops.
25. What do you do when you're discouraged when drawing?
I do something different like go to bed.
26. What did you do when you were a student? Was there something like the SOS Brigade in your school?
There wasn't any nonsense like that at my school. I did pass the time by drawing pictures of my classmates. It was very ordinary.
27. Please tell us any special memories you had from your high school days.
Well… One of my friends fell in love with our teacher and I got ambushed every day to listen to her. Again, that's just ordinary life.
28. Do you have any memories from your school festivals?
I was in the art club so I remember frantically trying to finish my oil paintings.
29. What was your favorite subject in school?
I'd like to say the fine arts, but they weren't my strong points at that time. It'd have to be Japanese.
30. You have a very enjoyable motif in your drawings. Do you have anything that stands out as fun?
Since I'm usually drawing young girls the fluttering ribbons are what stand out. That and the lines around the fingers/toes.
31. What do you think is the most important point when drawing girls?
It has to be their facial expressions. The face is how their character comes together.
32. You used to work in the game industry. What did you learn there that helped you when illustrating novels?
How to finely draw the characters. In the industry there are times where there are only slight differences in the characters so you end up having to re-draw them over and over. That helped a lot.
33. You've drawn Haruhi several times. Is there any particular one that is memorable to you?
I drew the three girls with a giant "BANG!" for some type of campaign. I've used that several times as it's my favorite.
34. How old were you when you had your first love? What kind of person was he?
It was a refreshing boy in my elementary school class (laugh). All of the girls in our class had a crush on him.
35. How old were you when you drew your first illustration?
I had been scribbling since kindergarten but it was officially when I was in middle school that I started illustrating.
36. Do you wear glasses, contacts, or do you go without eye correction?
No glasses at all. I have super great eyesight.
37. What image is on your cell phone now?
Just a default image. That Q-pot is really cute!
38. Has anyone among your family or friends stopped and talked to you about Haruhi?
The child of my mother's tennis partner loves Haruhi and so we talk from time to time (laugh). It's alright though.
39. Please tell us about the history of your pen name.
I just borrowed the two names of musicians I liked and combined them into one.
40. Please tell us what you think of the new head of the Sneaker Bunko editorial department.
As we've worked together on various things he's always had some wise choices to help me. I had that impression of him when we met for the first time after he requested an illustration. I was so nervous.
41. Please tell us any memories you have with the new heads.
From U-san I received some homemade candy and from the handsome I-san I got a beer mug for White Day presents (laughs).
42. Are you a morning, afternoon, or evening person?
I'm a morning person, but I don't mind working until late at night to finish an illustration.
43. Is there anything you really wish for now?
I'd like a cat. At times I have a freeloading parrot that comes by and I think he'd stop with a cat in the house (laughs).
44. What spots would you like to visit?
I'd like to go to Isetan but I'd also like to go to Umeda as well.
45. If it's possible to freely go to the past, what year would you go to and what would you do?
I don't really look back into the past too much. If I had to go somewhere it'd probably be sometime I already experienced (laughs).
46. Up until now, who would you say most influenced you?
Kokawayun-sensei at Capcom immensely influenced me.
47. What do you find yourself most enthused about in your spare time recently?
I've got too many side interests that I'm not that interested in. If pressed I'd say hand creams?
48. Please tell us what you look forward to in the future.
I hope to continue living in harmony with my family and pet.
49. What were your thought about the worldwide simultaneous release of The Surprise of Haruhi Suzumiya?
It was an extreme honor for my work to be thought of so highly around the world. It's an immense pressure that I want to yell sometimes.
50. Please give a message to the fans who are awaiting your next work.
I too look forward to see what Haruhi and everyone gets into next. "I look forward to the next situation!" is what I would send as a fan letter to Tanigawa-sensei. Surely he would make it very exciting (raising expectations).
--This is all I will translate as I have to prepare for two big events coming up. If anyone is heading to AX next weekend, I hope to see you there.

Thanks Megax for translating the interviews with Tanagawa-sensei, and Itou-sensei. They had some interesting responses.

I can still see plenty of Yuki/Kyon fanfic that will try to go for a well written romance ending. Shipping goes on even when the authors themselves shot down pairings(like in the Harry Potter fandom.) and TVtropes does have a section on Fan-preferred couples so the events of canon will probably have little effecting on the shipping itself. Of course, as a Haruhi/Kyon shipper, I am thrilled with the direction canon is seeming to go.
I can see Yuki further developing as a character in ways that don't involve romance. Ways that she slowly gains more humanity, and perhaps this leads her to discover the path for her own evolution. I can also see Yuki as the kind of character that nobly sacrifices herself at the end and goes out with a smile. I don't see Tanigawa-sensei going that route though. I know I want to see more Yuki smiling though, but I imagine that would take a long time to get to.
I seem to recall that Kyon too wanted to see Yuki smile again.

Just because she can't get character development directly from him doesn't mean he can't be there to witness it come from other sources. I'm not buying the idea that her character development is done. It doesn't take a lot of imagination to come up with other ways her character could develop without the need for romance.

Well, to be fair, every single bit of character development Yuki has gotten has been non-romance related. She got development from playing a freaking computer game, for crying out loud. And on the other end of the spectrum, she got development from overhauling the universe. There's a lot of room between those two extremes.
Having her interact with other would be something on its own. Kyon getting in on part of it so we get to know about it, but otherwise not be part of it would work. Even if it is only her going around with the Computer Club.
There was that guy that was into her as well, though that disappointed her (that in itself is a reaction more than simple observation). So it is possible for there to be things going on with Yuki outside the SOS-dan.
Having her speak freely would even be somthing...not just to Kyon, though I don't know how that will happen since Kyon has a tendancy to omit things that don't relate directly to his situation...though he will omit his own name.
With Yuki, simple things still work. An honest smile for instance.

Really? I can give you 3, all of which took less than a minute to come up with.
Yuki could start dressing normally outside of school, and even start clothes shopping. This would be evidence that Yuki is starting to care about how she looks. Kyon would notice this during one of the Brigade's "City-wide Searches." This is plausible given that Yuki has already started sprucing up her own home a little bit.
Or one time during a City-wide Search, Yuki decided to skip the library and go do something more stimulating, liking going to the arcade (cue the Haruhi-chan version of Yuki). Again, Kyon could witness this while being paired up with her.
Or Yuki could realize that after years of reading hundreds of novels that she wants to write her own novel (perhaps the events of Editor inspired her to become a writer). Kyon could discover this in one of two ways: Either he spots her using the laptop during club time, or he is approached by Yuki later so he could read the novel and tell her what he thinks.
All three of these are relatively simple examples of possible character development that don't require Kyon to be anything more than a friend, nor do they require him to be a stalker to find out about them. And I came up with these off the top of my head. I'm sure Tanigawa could do better with months of brainstorming.
Her personality doesn't have to alter drastically for it to count. Small changes over the course of several novels can add up.

Speaking of which, is there any reason given for her wearing normal clothes during Remote Island Syndrome? Did someone tell her to? Is the anime diverging from the novel? Or was this simply before it was decided that wearing her uniform non-stop would be a character trait?

I suspect it was to prevent Haruhi from getting suspicious. I mean, if Yuki had worn nothing but her school uniform the whole time (the trip was a few days long), I think even Haruhi would think that was REALLY weird. This was before the vast majority of Yuki's character development, so I doubt it was something she did because she felt like it.

I think Haruhi has come to terms with Yuki being weird (a scene that comes to mind is Haruhi asking where Yuki's glasses are, Yuki saying nothing, and Haruhi brushing it off); additionally, less than a month after the island trip, Yuki wore her uniform for at least two weeks straight when the Endless Eight stuff was going on.

That could still be justified with her washing them every night. But wearing the same uniform for nearly a week straight without washing? Eww (even though I doubt Yuki sweats, I also doubt that Haruhi knows that).
Or it was Haruhi's idea...much like the kimonos in Endless Eight. Also Yuki needed to change to a swimsuit for the beach.
Interestingly, she didn't really do anything on that trip aside from follow orders when given (the closed door, which some think was an attempt at humor). Otherwise she was relaxing and reading when not under command by Haruhi (the sticks game scene).

Kozumi: don't see that much development here, but we haven't seen any situations that involve put SOS-dan and the organization at odds.

Are we really going to go through this AGAIN? Endless insane marketing tactics, never telling the fans ANYTHING of worth, and then releasing the most disappointing content possible that seems deliberately designed to kill the series?
If this is all there is, I... I have no way of truly expressing how angry it makes me. God damn it.

Hey hey, calm down. Disappointment entirely depends on your own expectations. I wonder why you would be so angry if you already knew what their 'endless marketing tactics' means in practice; you shouldn't have expected anything else.
Besides, life isn't as interesting without things to look forward to. Think about it. If they dumped everything related to Haruhi (all the novels, all short stories animated) on one day, would the series have become what it is now? It would've been all over in an instant and the series would be completely forgotten a few months later.
During the three year hiatus of the novels, the series has been kept alive by the anime and the movie. Now Surprise comes along and we're all still here, Four years down the road, if you count from when the anime aired (when the series' popularity really took off) or 7 years if you count from when the first novel was published and the popularity of the series still hasn't diminished. I find that quite impressive for a series that doesn't air a single episode full of fillers every week.

They only do this with Haruhi. Other franchises don't dance around announcements of new content like this; I just think it's annoying and unfair to the immense, dedicated fanbase.
If I knew all the hype was actually going to have a reward at the end of it, I'd be more enthused, but the last time I gave into said hype I got the same episode eight times for two months.
During the three year hiatus of the novels, the series has been kept alive by the anime and the movie.
I think you were around at the time, but... Endless Eight pretty much killed all activity in this subforum during its airing. It's never really recovered.
That, more than anything, is why I don't like what Kadokawa is doing now.
Again, like I said, I'm probably jumping the gun here, as it's still early. I'm just bracing for disappointment.

If Haruhi is only series who gets this 'endless marketing tactics', doesn't that make the series special? That's the reason I laughed when Endless Eight started to iterate into the ridiculous. I don't remember being here on AnimeSuki though, I was too busy having fun during summer, just like the folks who did summer 15498 times. Every time I imagined the anger raging over the internet by it, I could only laugh.
Technically, there has never been a season 2. 2009's run was only called a re-airing. It was obviously meant to be a big stunt. Just look at the airing dates of each episode; give or take 2 weeks, the time of the events in the episode coincides with the airing time, with the exception of the first few episodes of Endless Eight. The original run wasn't much less of a stunt with the messed up chronology.
You probably know better than I do that the popularity of the series took a big hit there. It's arguable if it was the for the better or worse. Bamboo Leaf Rhasody and the first iteration of Endless Eight airing before the rest might have been the cause why you noticed the sudden drop of activity; because the discussion was at a peak.
Ah sorry for rambling on for this long, off-topic even. I'll stop after this comment. :heh:
Kadokawa has its own reasons for running things. Killing the series is the last thing they want to do. Although I'm not sure what they're trying to achieve, what I do get is a unique experience with something that should have been merely another show. A google translate of the following tweet from Kadokawa just before the Haruhi-negai announcement caught my attention.
"HARUHI NEGAI"

Yes, it is true that disappoitment is a result of our own expectations and perhaps this was just going to be a way for Kadokawa to give back using Haruhi. However, when you set up a big buildup with having us wait a month to hear about it becoming available as an e-book and that some of the wishes people posted on the website will be hung for Sendai's Tanabata, it just feels that it wasn't worth waiting a month to hear it.
I actually agree with you that the waiting has certainly made us think of the franchise more, and it can be fun to highly anticipate something once you have something substantial to actually wait around for. I suppose that is it more than anything. We'd like to know for sure that there will be a new season and I don't think we'd mind waiting a while for it as long as we know that we are getting something rather than buildup that produces nothing. I don't actually mind following a thread, but Kadokawa hasn't even given us that yet.
Yes, it is impressive that there is still a lot of interest in the series with the period of time between them releasing material. You'd think they'd want to reward our loyalty or at least strike while the iron is still hot. I still have hope for seeing something new for next year, and so I will just wait for Kadokawa to tease us more when they feel like it. I hate the teasing, but at the same time, it makes every all the more thrilling when we finally get something.
I think you were around at the time, but... Endless Eight pretty much killed all activity in this subforum during its airing. It's never really recovered.
Are we all still raging about E8? Didn't, Disappearance wash away all the bad blood? Or are you the same poster that was also ripping on Disappearance even though you couldn't wait and watched the LQ cam-rip version?
What's the big deal with waiting for the next novel/anime/movie... it'll be here when it's ready. Hell, at least Tanigawa is still alive (knock-on-wood)... there are other fandoms who aren't so lucky you know...
I would think in terms of the Japanese fandom, a prayer from god to the gods would have a deeper meaning, especially after that earthquake. To those of us outside Japan, it would not mean as much, but to those directly effected?

I suppose that may be the viewpoint of some fans, but in the grand scheme of things, Endless Eight was not that bad. Yes, you got 7 extra filler episodes, but we can all name other popular series(one with highly visible ninjas) that have longer, and more absurd amount of filler. And look at this way, if E8 is the worst of Haruhi, things can only get better. I think we'll all forget or laugh about this in five years or so.
Anyway, getting back to topic, Ithekro has a good point that I didn't consider. Hopefully, people can find healing through what Kadokawa is planning on doing in Sendai.

Though, since Tanabata was more significant regarding the events of Bamboo Leaf and Disappearance (and since those have already come to pass) wouldn't it be more likely for similar viral marketing strategies to occur around dates significant to Snow Mountain and Intrigue?

Huh? Everything except the black part is changed. They do have a similar style to all the covers - icon of some kind at the top, black bar with Haruhi silhouette in the middle with "The _____" around it in white, and a band of stripes on the right. But the icon at the top, the font used for the title (which is hand-drawn), and the colors in the stripes are all different.

Not to promote piracy or anything, but if you can find copies of the books online, it might be better to read those first to determine if you like them before buying anything. I find that, to me, the texts are only worth anything because I've seen the anime first and I have a clear picture of every scene in my mind. When reading the later books, the prose just feels flat and dull.
Obviously you shouldn't take my word for it, but that's all the more reason why you should try before you buy.

Interesting. Cliffhanger I see. Though I would guess the actual manga is ahead of this by a bit.
wow that cliffhanger. I hope everything turns out alright. I wonder where the story is going to go with a development like that
Well there are still a few characters missing. Arakawa for instance. I recall that in the Haruhi-chan version VN Yuki makes there is an incident of Arakawa hitting or nearly hitting the main character with his car. Perhaps this is something like that...though I've seen the "thinking about a long eventful future with someone scene that ends in tragic death" before....this doesn't seem like the series for that sort of thing. That and this would be about the right spot for the start of a new Volume, being right after their big hot springs trip that took several chapters.

There's an article (http://yaraon.blog109.fc2.com/blog-entry-3938.html) in a Japanese magazine being published this week called Haruki and Haruhi. (The name and full details can be translated another time) In it, the authors went to the Dream Cafe that served as the model for the coffee lounge seen in the anime. In that shop, they have a message book for fans to write in. The authors found this message:
Tanigawa-kun, your dream has come true. I've watched the anime of Haruhi and it reminded me of those wonderful times back then that I dearly miss.
-The sole upperclassman girl of Nishinomiya High School's Literature Club
Yes, it's that person mentioned in the afterword of Disappearance. I thought it was a nice detail and wanted to pass it on to international fans.
So they (or at least, this magazine) have acknowledged that Haruki is a better name than Haruhiko, or is there some other meaning of Haruki that I'm not seeing in my dictionary?
Also, that's a pretty touching detail. Also nice that they actually read the notes.

The Intrigues Of Haruhi Suzumiya: Coming June 2012
The Indignation Of Haruhi Suzumiya: Coming September 2012

It looks like Astonishment will only be Part 1 as they list it as only having 240 pages (but that is likely to change in two years). At least we have confirmation that they are sticking with the franchise until then.

The last four books all list them as 240 pages, so I'm assuming it's just a placeholder amount. I'm thinking that since they don't list Astonishment as two parts they'll have both in one book.

If they're all listed as 240, that speaks to a placeholder... especially considering the longest page-count of any released novel in English is in fact 240... but if Astonishment is coming in Sept 2013, is that really enough time to get both parts translated?

Considering Intrigues is going to be the longest (assuming Astonishment is split into two volumes like everywhere else), it's certainly a placeholder. I believe these will change throughout the next two years as Yen will have more details when the works become finished. I'm just glad to see them licensed and have some kind of a concrete release date.
Can Astonishment be translated in full by September 2013? Yes, it's certainly possible and I wouldn't be surprised if Yen decides to do that. The problem will be the placement of the color pages and additional cover for the second book if a second book is not used. Maybe I'm too partial to the original release, but thus far it's been released as two books in every country thus far. Maybe Yen could cut us a break and release them together for once?
Edit since I don't see the need to double-post for this: Yen removed the listing for Astonishment around noon EST today. No reason is given. I'm curious as I sent an inquiry about some details regarding licenses/Astonishment's release details/etc this morning before the removal.
Glad to see they're consistent. :-P (Extrapolation for the win!)
Yen Press has said before the ~6 month gaps are intentional to maximize sales and because they are being published as light novels.

The Back cover text has been released for The Intrigues of Haruhi Suzumiya:
After closing a time loop fiasco in The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya (Vol. 5), our protagonist Kyon is ready to start a new year with a blank slate--no time travel, no apocalyptic worries, and maybe some actual peace and quiet with the SOS Brigade, a club comprised of his high school's most extraordinary students. Their leader is Haruhi, a bold, brash girl who doesn't realize that she's actually a powerful goddess whose moods can easily change the balance of the universe.
Just as Kyon starts to get comfortable, he gets a visit from his friend Mikuru. Except this isn't his Mikuru; it's a Mikuru from eight days in the future! Time traveling shenanigans start all over again as Kyon, guided by the future Mikuru, attempts to stop a terrible future from becoming a reality.
(Yes, I kept the volume error. Sadly, that just makes it more evident it's from Hachette/Yen/Little, Brown.)
Also this volume will have a Kindle version (http://t.co/X86zAxgv)!
So, I was looking in a light novel bookshop the other day and I saw a version of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya printed under 'Kadokawa Wing Books' of Kadokawa Taiwan. Is there any difference? Just thought I'd mention this because it was also mentioned in the Observation of Haruhi Suzumiya.
EDIT: Nevermind, I found the answer. For anyone who's interested, it's a series started in both Kadokawa Shoten and Kadokawa Taiwan aiming to provide light novels and stuff to younger readers. (i.e. ones that are suitable for them) The Kadokawa Shoten versions have extra hiragana next to the kanji (based on what I read in observation), and I have yet to find out what's different in the Chinese version.

The Kadokawa Tsubasa (角川つばさ文庫) label is a re-printing of popular novels or original novels designed to be read by elementary/middle school children. These books have a bigger font as well as furigana beside any kanji. It's the exact same text, but with these guides to help children read it.

(They switched translators from Chris Pai to Paul Starr. I've already seen one translation I can't say I'd do, but it's somewhat understandable.)

I see nothing in his post that'd point to him actively participating in the ongoing discussion in the thread. I doubt most people in this thread actually wait for the official English releases anyway. I buy them to support the series, but it'd be crazy to wait 3+ years to read something that's already available online.

Quick note on the translation. Here's a couple of changes that were taken by Yen Press from the fan/Bandai version:
"Starling Inferno" is now "Star Ring Inferno"
"Haru-nyan" is fully translated to "Haru-meow"
It's late in my time zone, so I'll double-check tomorrow for any other changes that I missed.
ijuinkun
2011-10-28, 22:37
Well, the "Star Ring" bit definitely makes more sense that way. Dunno about the Haru-meow--while "nyan" is usually translated to "meow" as the sound of a cat, it loses the context where it's supposed to be a cute-ish version of "-chan".
Just like Azu-meow.... yeah I guess that's a good solution.
ultimatemegax

It shows a lack of consistency between releases. On pg. 131 and 136 of Rampage the previous translator had "Haru-nyan" translated as "Harls." The new translator has a different translation and none of the editing staff bothered to catch it. Thus we have two different translations for the same nickname in Japanese for the official English releases.
Personally, I liked "Harls" as it signifies Tsuruya's addition of "s" on various words (which wasn't kept by the new translator) as a little verbal tic. It's a good translation of a nickname without going literal like "Haru-meow." This is why it bugs me, but others may feel differently.

The cover arts for The Intrigues of Haruhi Suzumiya have been revealed.

http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg4/ultimatemegax/Haruhi%20Images/51yIMqPpJ4L_SS500_.jpg (Hardcover)
They are set to be released on June 19th, 2012. Summary is as follows:

Wow at the wrong volume for Disappearance and them saying that they're trying to "stop a terrible future".
Thanks for providing us the covers for Intrigues. I received my copy of Wavering on Friday, and I have read through part of it. I noticed in the "Live Alive" story, they mention Pop Music Club instead of Light Music Club. I am not sure if the fan translated version had the same as that. Not sure how I feel about "Haru-meow". I kinda liked "Starling Inferno" better than "Star Ring Inferno" because it just had that Engrish feel to it, plus it sounded like a lawyer-friendly nod to Star Light Breaker.
Hmm, Chartreuse, I wasn't expecting that.

English Astonishment set roughly two year from now?
Well, I suppose I've waited quite a long time already.

*Completely missed the fan translation
Nagato Yuki-chan continues. But who is Nagato? Almost the normal (alien) Nagato...but she is not quite (she blushes). But she isn't quite the Alt-Yuki anymore either. (but then the Nagato Yuki-chan alt is like a alt version of the Haruhi-chan Yuki...with the gamer parts and the antics with Ryoko).
One step and a time, Kyon. One step at a time.

Astonishment's first press edition sold 435,124 (about 85% of the first pressing) this fiscal year according to Oricon (http://www.oricon.co.jp/entertainment/ranking/2011/bookrank1201/index09.html). Since the set contained two books, that's 870,148 novels sold from one release. The series itself sold 1,094,466 books this year. (Taken from the amount sold (http://www.oricon.co.jp/entertainment/ranking/2011/bookrank1201/index08.html) for Tanigawa and adding another 435,124 (for the 11th novel) to it)
Only Index, Haganai, and Infinite Stratos had more total books sold this year.
Well if anime require lead time to make...that's I suppose two year until it could be possibly animated? Including figuring out how to make sure it works with the existing unanimated material (research, writting, scripting, animating, and so on).

They have a section on Yen Press's site for the novels now, and so far the synopses match those of the previous releases. Here's their synopsis for Intrigues:
"It’s a new year, and Haruhi Suzumiya, the powerful (and pushy) leader of the SOS Brigade is actually…content. For once, she’s not seeking out time-traveling exploits, murder mysteries, or any other wild adventures that could lead to the destruction of the universe. Surprisingly, it’s Kyon, the most normal member of the SOS Brigade, who wants to shake things up. When Kyon discovers that something’s not right with the universe, it’s up to him, his pal (and secret crush) Mikuru, and the beautiful but stoic Nagato to head back to the past in order to save the future."
I haven't read Intrigues (lol, got taken down before I could get to it). Is this better? (I know it's better than getting the ordering of your own series wrong)

The "all three of them head to the past" is really only for the prologue part--it's still not mentioning that the main part of the story involves a Mikuru from eight days in the future who needs to be kept hidden from Haruhi and the "present" Mikuru.

If you looked at the first page of the anime thread (also known as the peaceful times before the anime aired and brought with it a swarm of new fans), you'll know that there are two different manga adaptations for Suzumiya Haruhi.
The first manga adaptation, which serialized on the comic magazine Shonen Ace back in 2004, was drawn by Mizuno Makoto. Unfortunately, the manga was received poorly among the fans because both the drawing style and the thiet ke website (http://bantayso.com) storytelling were too different from the original novel. The manga was cancelled after only a single tankoubon release in September of 2004 (The cover is shown in Neosam's post above). For most people, this manga has been swept into kurorekishi (dark history). In other words, "it never existed".
The second (current) manga adaptation is drawn by Tsuganogaku, and began its serialization on Shonen Ace back in November of 2005, and is currently still ongoing. The first tankoubon (volume) of the manga is due to be released on April 26, 2006.
I doubt most people in this thread actually wait for the official English releases anyway. I buy them to support the series, but it'd be crazy to wait 3+ years to read something that's already available online.

So, I was looking at the cover for Intrigues and it looks like the cover for Waverings is placed behind the cover for Intrigues. Particularly in the lower left corner where you can see a bit of what looks like Haruhi's red arm band. Is this just me, or do you guys see it too? And if so, do you think it'll be cleaned up before release?http://www.yenpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/HARUHI7_INTRIGUES.jpg

It appears that they cleaned the top part of the image, but no other part as the sailor uniform and part of Haruhi's hair is also visible. Since it will be published in June, it's highly improbable that copies have been printed already, so there would be a decent chance that it will be fixed. I'll tweet and e-mail this to Yen to alert them of this mishap. Thank you for finding this and bringing our attention to it.
I checked, and the JP cover does not have this issue, so it is a Yen problem.

A bit late in noticing, but they have replaced that image with a fixed version. The listings still use the version from September, which has the problem, but if you click on the image, it uses the fixed version. The other listings on Amazon et al may not be corrected though.

Two questions...
1) The Light Novel came before the manga correct?
2) Where can I find Haruhi Suzumiya Light Novels 10 & 11 (English)?
It is based on a series of Light Novels, yes.
They have not gotten up to translating Books 10 and 11 (officially) yet. They are still on Book 7, I think.

Well I did say "officially" :D
To other things, Nagato-chan is still cute even if she's not quite like she was before (Chapter 29). She's becoming less like the Haruhi-chan version mixed with the Disappearance Nagato and more the normal universe Nagato...mixed with the Disappearance Nagato. Though I do like the gamer girl Nagato we had before...this is looking like a possbile perfect fusion. We'll see he her emotions work...since she is displaying a little here and there...even if she seems more like the Bookworm (alien) Nagato more than the Shy Nagato from Disappearance.
(An embarrassed "Normal/alien" Yuki is fine too)
That and since this isn't (mostly) in the Haruhi-chan style...Nagato shows off some leg for sports...I keep forgetting how good they draw her legs to look.

Hatchette's sites aren't up yet, but a search for "Haruhi" on their main site leads to two new listings for Indignation. The 8th English novel will now be released on November 20th, 2012.
Edit: Summary from Amazon listing:
Two stories continue the adventure in Volume 8 of the Haruhi Suzumiya series.
Editor-in-Chief, Straight Ahead!
Since the beginning of the year, the SOS Brigade has been masking as the Literature Club to be recognized as an official high school organization. But when the new student council president threatens to disband the group, the members must write a collection of literature. Naturally, Haruhi assume the role of editor-in-chief and leads the team to publication with hilarious results.
Wandering Shadow
From writers to detectives, the SOS Brigade does it all. When fellow classmate Sanaka comes to the club seeking help, the team (well, Haruhi) is up to the task. A well-trodden popular park path has suddenly begun to terrify the neighborhood dogs, and Haruhi suspects that its being haunted by animal spirits. It looks like the SOS Brigade is about to perform its first first canine exorcism!
It's real; we have a mistake in Sakanaka's name. The JP version uses さかなか beside her name, so it is that.

It's gotten to be a habit that the back cover of Yen Press's novels have at least one mistake, so it's the official translation that's wrong (though the inside will be correct). In the past Yen has messed up volume numbers and the back cover of the first novel has Kyon sitting behind Haruhi. Of course the inner portion is translated well.
(I've seriously double-checked the JP editions. Both novel 8 and the fanbook have it as Sakanaka.)

Is there a website (that can at least be translated from jap to eng) where i can find new informations about the release of the 12th novel? And ye, classic question: is there already an approximate(no there isn't lol) date of the release of the 12th novel? Perhaps, even a clue will do (will it be released in 2012 or 2036?)
Sorry for the bother, i'm just too sick of backpaging ._., understand my feelings.

Nothing has been revealed since the fanbook for the novels came out in June of last year. That simply said Tanigawa was working on it last April. We've had nothing said since then.

Secondly, starting with the 5/18 edition of Altima Ace released in April, Puyo will begin a new manga entitled The Intrigues of Itsuki Koizumi.
