You can't rate genius!
True, true. The first episode was a stroke of genius.
I'm still going to vote a 10 because of that. :)
Seen that episode four times, once with a friend, and couldn't stop myself from laughing every time. Starting the show in this way is simply brilliant. It has to be one of the most unique, if not the most unique, first episode I've seen and I can't even point out all of the genuine things in it.
- The opening, as senseless it is, is catching and has a nice touch due to the inserted credits by the SOS Dan (note the credits for Haruhi).
- The animation and design as a whole is on another level. Kyoto Animation outdo themselves this time, that's far above their former works like FMP and AIR.
- The whole crappy amateurish styled movie look is well done. The quality of the picture is grained, zooms-ins and -outs are shacky and fail to maintain the sharpness, same goes for fade-outs. The pans are stocky and never manage to completely leave other things out of the picture.
- Also nice all the zoom-ins while moving, Kyon is never able to go straight thus resulting in shifts, add the weird angles and Haruhi jumping in at messed up scenes, fun at a high production level all the way.
- The blue screen and its effects in the changing scene, hilarious.
- Effects are just lol, as is the cat and Yuki always trying to put it back on her shoulder. :D
- The cheap elevator-music is another mark for such an amateur production. Score here as well. :)
- Script is cheap, lacks continuity, jumps throughout the whole plot and has some of the usual wannabe deep conversations which are the standard in anime (Yuki and Itsuki and their future-talk). You can truly see how much time and thought Haruhi did invest in this.
- It does also not lack the usual things. There are commercials in it, the eyecatch (again by Haruhi) isn't missing. The transition at the end from 4:3 to 16:9 - stylish. The disclaimer at the end and the credits, this is a perfectly done movie/episode with all the stuff which belongs in it. Just that it was done by real amateurs/students. :)
- The narration/monologues by Kyon. Genuine. It adds so much to the whole episode and finally somebody speaks up to point out all those mahou shoujo elements and them being out-of-place. His sarcasm fits for every scene.
- Also nice all those disturbances, car door closes just when Yuki is talking, the teachers find them on the roof when the fireworks go off, Tsuruya unable to control her laugh (well yeah, that was pretty laughable).

I gave it a 9, it was definitely genius thought it wouldve been easier to grasp the ep if i had saw ep 2 beforehand.e.g the vesper, alien and fighting maid v fighting girl alien, was soo Haruhi but at that point of time i didnt even know who Haruhi was, might even go rewatch ep 1 to get a better feel for the ep xD
Took me 4minutes to figure that it was a episode about them making a movie and not just some square and small looking screen >.>.
Couldnt stop laughing with the music played when they zoomed into the battle and the poses was a riot xD
The attention to "detail" is amazing in the episode. For example...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v501/rainz/jump.jpg
Notice how she moves her hand down for cover between the shots and also blushes. Amazing detail for something that lasts for like 0.5 second.
...and no, I didn't notice this purely because I rewinded to watch the panty shot many times. *cough*
And I'm still unsure about what caused the blue screen in the changing scene. As far as I know, those usually occur when you rewind the tape and shoot over something... which means that he might really have record something... hmm...

I was pretty much the same way as you i actually fell asleep watching the first episode the first time i was quite bored with it, but the second episode totally reclaimed my excitement for this series, as well as the ending and the intro just kick ass
i had to vote a 3 for this episode though cause i could not stay awake :(

You all do know that this "first episode" is actually episode 0, right? It was officially announced as episode 0 (just because afk called it episode 1 doesn't mean it is, they aren't the company making it). I believe it's even getting its own DVD. The "second" episode is the actual first episode.
10 all the way, baby. :D
Rating this one is hard, expecialy because I think (like others said) it would incease his value one episode after another (and I can't wait for the eventual "making-of").
Said that I must agree with...
You can't rate genius!

Since I've voted too high on the ep 2 poll, I'm gonna be agreeing with you :p
But I'd rate Genius as eleventy-million :D

The episodes are 01 and 02, not 00 and 01. Confirm that on this page (http://www.haruhi.tv/activitylog.html) of the SOS-dan site. The movie-within-an-anime was episode 00 of Mikuru's Adventure. Original Japanese files on WinNY are also numbered 01 and 02. This is the only thing for which we need not take Haruhi's word.
I gave this first episode a perfect ten. This is the only episode of anything I have ever given that score to in an AS poll. As good as episode 2 is, it does not reach the heights of this all-time-classic episode.
And I'm still unsure about what caused the blue screen in the changing scene. As far as I know, those usually occur when you rewind the tape and shoot over something... which means that he might really have record something... hmm...
I didn't even think about that... but I guess we'll find out during the "making of" Ep (or the folks who have read the novels can let us know). ^^

I'm similar; I believe that 10 is a perfect rating, and since nothing is perfect, 9 is the highest I normally rate things.
This was perfect.

Kyon is, of course, correct in both matters. Suzumiya may be enthusiastic, but Kyon is realistic.

To be on the fair side of things, inspiration for the change will have to come from none other than Kyon in one of his random observation no matter how little of a potato he is considered by Haruhi, i.e. the inspiration for S.O.S dan. :)

hey, this episode gets better everytime you watch it.
you lot trealise how serious, at some of the scenes they got?
espcially at the time when Yuki was talking to Itsuki? pay attention to the dialogue. Itsuki slipped up, while Yuki talks about the importants of what he means to "____" goes "so you me he- wait. i'm the trigger?"
or smoething along that road. its really amazing, it gets deeper everytime you find out a little bit more, then go watch the first episode and suddenly the some of the lines of the dialogue actually MEANS something if you consider the characters powers were real.... :)

I´m going to rewatch this episode when all the characters have been introduced. Feels like a clever thing to do. It´s probably going to be a lot more fun to watch when you know how the characters act normally. :D
aye.... the best combo for people is to watch ep1, then ep2, then ep1 again... if ep1 is too wierd for them... then ep2, ep1, ep2 :)

2006-04-15, 17:51
I'd say the second idea is better, Vexx... the first episode is a bit too STRANGE for a lot of people, whereas the second is such gold that you just have to watch it twice... at least!
(Note: Akuma-sama was seen in a HAA (Haruhi Addicts Anonymous) meeting, proclaiming having seen episode 2 eight times... in two days)
I've watched the second episode about four times, and the first six times. I love the first episode - its even more brilliant now that I know some of the characters, so there's a bit of sense behind the random crazyness (which I still loved when I first watched the episode).
I'll be watching it again tonight.. my older son is coming in from college for some ancient ritual holiday this weekend. That'll make 3 times for each.
I was wondering if Kyon's narration is in the movie or if it's just inside his head? I mean, it makes sense for it to be in the movie but I couldn't help but think some of his comments would have been taken out by the director.

Best scene to stick in my mind right now, Yuki precise Magic Wand plastic BB blocking. You wouldn't notice until you see her move the wand about and you can hear the "tac-tac" and the slight vibration as the BB's are easily deflected.

I guess this was discussed and over discussed in the former thread so I leave just a brief overall thought.
This episode shows the bravery of originality. It's all composed of pieces of "wtf?" apparently nonsense, but all of them being brilliant. At the end all makes more (?) sense, even though I got it was a play at minute 6 ^^
And then Suzumiya Haruhi, what an appealing character
By the way, originality gets always prized from me: 9/10 , because I saw episode 1 and 2 together, and I feel like giving the highest rate to the second (more Haruhi ^^).

On the most part, i thought this episode was infact pretty funny. Not perfect but excellent so i gave it a 9/10.
Well a bit after everyone i give it a 7... lol
I guess how great it is, it's really too "daring" for a first episode. Like someone said, i took me quite a while to understand this was a joke...
I don't know, maybe i'm stupid... lol
I loved the voices, though, you know, completely "lifeless". This is pure genius.
Kyon's comments are hilarious as well.
Then I liked the messed angles ( lmao, the lake scene) and the messed sound ( Yuki's voice you can't hear in the same scene... roftl)
But still, i guess this is a bit too much to ask from an audience. I mean, people like me, who don't know a thing about the novel or the manga.
I have to confess I downloaded it once, threw it away after the OP (is that an OP, by the way? lol) much too quickly, thinking " what the f... was that?", then completely forgot about it
A couple of weeks later i read about it on the suggestion forum, where some people wrote that's the most exciting series this year, once you've gotten past that first ep...
Plus lots of people here are using Haruhi as an avatar and/or a sig, so i really felt like i had to watch it more carefully.
Now i'm watching ep.2 i'd say they are probably right. ^^ I don't remember their nickames but i'll check again and give them good reputation points. That's the less i can do. :heh:

Thanks! :D
I hope i won't fail everyone in here! lol
At least I have to watch all the ep. released so far to grant myself the right to post without making a fool of myself. :heh:
Just joking.
Can someone tell me, why Mikuru has a red and a blue eye in the scene, where she uses her mighty Mikuru Beam? She normally has brown eyes. Is it because of her attack, is it a special effect by Haruhi, or something else? I don't know why, but I'm thinking about this for some time now.
I guess that's a special effect, as you said, but I'm not sure. Actually I wondered about that too, then stopped wondering, because there were so many other things to wonder about. :heh: It may be good to come back on it now. Thanks. Don't you wanna take part in the HLFU? heehee. Watch the first character poll thread for more info. ^^
While, this making of a movie episode was definitely amusing, it wasn't overly funny.
As for this being a movie I thought that was pretty obvious, after kyon's commentary.
I mean it was funny, in a pathetic yet realistic look at highschool home movies.
However, there was a lull in the action sometimes, which put some of us to sleep.
Part of the reason, I believe this episode is not as popular as the others is,
Suzumiya Haruhi doesn't show up much in this episode at all.

What the?!
Completely nonsensical. I know it's supposed to be one of those parody episodes - but it's been done before, and done better. Not on the same level as, say, Gekiganger 3.

Was Gekiganger 3 shot in an "amateur video" way too?
Please watch it again and pay closer attention to the animation quality.... its actually quite technically difficult to pull this sort of thing off. The episode is also full of foreshadowing clues since chronologically it occurs toward the end of the story.
I actually recommend that people not used to stream-of-thought literature watch episode 1 last rather than first. Start with episode 2 and keep in mind that this only *LOOKS* like a typical high school romance-y thing. It gets seriously Twilight Zone rather quickly (the episodes are presented in a 'gestahlt' overview of the timeline rather than in chronological order).
What the?!
Completely nonsensical. I know it's supposed to be one of those parody episodes - but it's been done before, and done better. Not on the same level as, say, Gekiganger 3.Gekiganger 3 was produced to look like late 70s, 80s super robo anime.
But Episode 00 is produced to simulate true amateur video quality, it is even harder to do compared to normal animation of today standards.
I'm really disappointed with the average human.
Anyone has any info on the Japanese audience on their reactions to Episode 00?
Anyone has any info on the Japanese audience on their reactions to Episode 00?
I am guessing it is like "WTF are we watching?" for the majority.
I know I reacted like it. My exact thought was "What the heck did I d/led?". Then I watched until the last second because there were a time I was watching those badly done home videos for the breakfast, lunch and dinner.
The "What the heck did I d/led?" effect certainly happened to everyone who has never read the novels in the first place.
My belief is that the Japanese have an extreme positive effect after watching this show, that leads to the explosive hype and popularity burst.
This extreme positive effect can also happen to people outside Japan, like me and a whole bunch of Haruhists here, who laughed non-stop throughout the episode.

wow ... well the real tip off on whether we'll see more seasons will be:
1) Novel sales (they can't print them fast enough)
2) Merchandise (and they seem to have dropped the ball here a bit... still no figurines though we're starting to see fluff and druff (keychains, watches, other disposable stuff)
3) Follow up CDs... (how many ways will they package the same music :) )

Hopefully the otakus take moment to realize that lynching the nice people at KyoAni will only further delay a second Haruhi series :heh:
I don't think KyoAni expected this show to be this well recieved.
Anyways, I watched this again, as closely as possible, and yeah, the personal verdict is... masterpiece. I don't remember what grade I gave it but I was wrong. And I'm sure I'll like it more and more as I am reading the novels.

IYAAA, please accept my apologies, C.A. sama.

I edited my post. Sorry, I think I just skipped that very spoiler tag... Sorry again :heh:
1. The opening theme. Its a deliberate act to poke fun at sentai shows, mahou shoujo anime, henshin heroes, super robots and various other genres, obvious lyrics like 'be brave', 'shoot you with my Mikuru beam', 'A spell of love' etc, shows that.
Next is the story told by the lyrics: A lonely girl who came from the future to fight evil courageously. This alone has nothing wrong, but its hilarious because of the chorus and lines spoken by Mikuru, where she encourages herself and brightens the mood using amusing lines like 'come on lets dance' with 'baby' added at the back. There's also seemingly random lines that are placed in an attempt to add depth: 'Special generation', 'When am I going to grow up?', which of course doesn't make any sense.
All these coupled with the amusing melody and bad amateur singing voice, makes the OP hilarious. On the other hand, this also shows how brilliant the composer of this song and the voice actress is.
The bad arrangement of the OP animation also pokes fun of OP scenes of real life dramas.
The whole package being so bad, it makes you embarrassed to watch/listen, this makes you laugh.
Your 20 points are right on target, but I cannot say it is comprehensive. I exaggerate, but I say every single frame of animation in episode 00 01 deserves an honorable mention :D ! I'm prone to laugh at the slightest bit of humor, so I could not stop enjoying myself since the very beginning of this episode, especially after a rewatch. I've actually enjoyed rewinding and rewatching this silly OP quite a few times. :heh: The "ventriloquism" shot was unusually comical too. *bonk in the face* This episode is priceless.

14. At this point most people are laughing at Kyon's narrations. Others will continue laughing when Yuki appears with one leg over the window, the following dialogue between her and Itsuki would sound so abstract and nonsensical people can't stop laughing. Yuki delievers a heavy blow when she kneels down behind the window with her hat still visible.
What I originally wrote after reading that should be #14.5: :D
And how many people will realize that, after watching the whole series, Yuki and Itsuki's "abstract and nonsensical" dialogue actually isn't? :D

It becomes apparent after watching/reading most of the story that there's even less acting going on here than there initially appears to be; especially after reading the fifth chapter of the second book :uhoh:

All I can say is:
I-Feel-Kyon's-Pain.
It is not easy to do a passably dignified no-budget student film, even one that only lasts 15 minutes. (Here are 2 personal expamples, made 3 and 2 years ago)
Example 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p92seSUzOqk
Example 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MAvbJ9aPElw
But Ms Suzumiya manages to pull off a 30 minute feature. And terrible as it may be, her love and enthusiasm for the project is genunie and sincere, and I frankly respect her for it. :)
Why, she had sponsors! And really subtle (:uhoh:) advertisements for them.
I often mistake the name by calling her Haruhi Suzuma....he he he XD...just average.

I rated the first episode as a ten because after I watched it, I was instantly hooked onto now what is one of my most favorite anime series! :D
Ah, this brings me back to the day I first watched Fullmetal Alchemist...
Yes Haruhi episode 1 is the most amazing thing ever created. Those who watched and saw the brilliance in this is specially blessed by Haruhi-sama, you have recieved a gift from the Goddess herself.
Treasure what you have seen, this miracle that cannot be seen by all.

I've watched the series in chronological order and also airing order of course airing order first. I can't help but read into the conversation between Yuki and Itsuki at the sleeping Asahina scene where Yuki talks about joining together rather than 'pluck out the possibilities of the future' with asahina.
Itsuki also talks about 'he' first, which i think refers to Kyon, and that Kyon is the key to unlocking the door(Haruhi?) and change... the universe??? And then he goes on to say that he doesn't have enough authority and 'we'(his organisation) needs time to think, then Yuki says its not the time to tell the whole truth. I haven't read the novels so i have no idea if this is significant or not but i do know a whole volume was used for the making of this movie so it should be important. Anyone know anything or got any ideas?
Anyway.
Its funny how each character actually got the role that they actually had in real life and i still have no idea how/why Shamisen can talk and why Kyon wasn't freaking out about it, its probably explained in the novel.
Love the randomness of this ep, Itsuki's finger and nose thing is so funny, Yuki trying to keep Shamisen from falling is so cute, Kyon's comments are hilarious and love the last part when the credits are rolling
Yes, Itsuki and Yuki were actually talking about serious business.
The entire episode is serious business actually lol, not going to spoil you though.
Serious business can be seriously funny.
One wonders if they will ever do the other side of that episode.

Oh wow you just made me appreciate Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu even more!
Now i really want to read the novels and i hope if the second season comes out they expand more on this episode and the disappearance volume(i just watched the security camera vandalism season 2 preview thing) instead of random chapters although i liked what they did in the first season esp the out of sequence airing.

Not sure why alot of people don't like volume 2 though, I found it quite interesting.

I think it's because book 2 is where Haruhi achieves her lowest depth of sociopathy, regarding people as mere pawns in her games. For example, in one scene Kyon tells her to stop harassing Mikuru so much, and Haruhi declares in so many words that Mikuru is her toy to play with, which gets Kyon the angriest at Haruhi that we've ever seen him.

I'd give the first episode a very respectful 9/10 Excellent as I really liked it :)

So, is Kyon's narration part of the movie itself, or does it happen outside of the movie?
I'm under the impression Kyon narrates the movie as he's explaining scenes and settings.
The trouble is I don't think the little pieces we get to see outside of Episode 00 are any were he's suppose to be narrating...thus we can't prove it. That and as the film goes on, his commentary gets more and more meta as he comments on the camera pans, and a few other things that don't make sense...like the plot changing from science fiction to high school romance in the middle of the film.
Otherwise what we get in Episode 00 is Kyon playing "Mystery Science Theater 3000" in his own mind while watching what they actually editted for the first time...since it seems he doesn't remember actually editting the film together...fully at least.
Hmmm, I wonder how it would play out if you took all of Kyon's narration out?

Well, when I first watched the episode, I assumed that the narration was part of the movie itself. Thinking about it some more, I don't think Haruhi would've been pleased with Kyon's narration, however. :heh:

That would be interesting to watch. I guess somebody with good sound editing skills could edit the soundtrack to remove it...

Why do I fear that such an action would be more likely to create some sort of avatar of Hastur than anything else? :uhoh:

After just watching this episode again, I realized that Kyon never blames himself for any of the horrible camera shots. He seems to imply it's someone else's fault.
Also, the biggest shock in change I got watching it is in the facial animations. I really think that the 2009 style is so much better in that regard. Although maybe I should watch the last three episodes first and not use Episode 00 as a guideline lol

I was noticing that too
Well, Kyon doesn't blame himself cos Haruhi's the director, XD
He was still the guy filming, tough. While he can blame her for the weird transitions (as focosing in the outside of the windom during Tsuruya laugh), he was still the one who made all the other mistakes. Likhaving Itsuki appearing behind Yuki during the 'fight' at the 'lake' .

He blames Haruhi for choosing an inexperienced one such as him to be a cameraman. :heh:

As expected, just the DVD version. The only differences between the original 2006 episode and this one is the addition of a grand total of ~3 new scenes.
However, this is still one of the best episodes in the franchise, and the best episode, with regards to animation and attention to detail, KyoAni has ever produced, IMO.

Speaking of which, did anyone every compile a list of all the differences between the aired and DVD versions? I remember finding a short one for the first few episodes in Japanese, but I could never find any more.

I was sort of disappointed that they didn't add more to the original episodes but i guess they were amazing without anything else added.

They can't add anything to them if they don't plan to re-release the episodes on DVD. That's the reason behind their whole numbering scheme with the new DVDs.
But yeah, they were perfectly fine already.

Yea true,
They still however produce the old DVDs. I guess they hope this rerun will have a knockon effect and boost the sales of season 1 a little bit.
