Got a perfect 10 from me. I went over the episode several times now and I still get captured by the great direction and pacing, comedic timing, the quirky characters and the wonderful animation. Favourite scene of the episode: Kyon's head slam. His groan of pain has me grinning every time. :)
And another 10 from me for this Episode. After the first Ep i wasn't sure if I will like this Anime, but the second Ep was really great.
After this Ep i have put Suzumiya as my No.1 Anime of the new Season. (even better than Nana and funier than School Rumble 2)
Never gave a 10 to an ep rating. Even the mighty cool archer's episode get a 9... Guess theres would always be a first o_o

Whee! Suzumiya Haruhi finally got a proper forum! :D
10/10 over here!
to recap:
Haruhi's introduction of her random/aggressive personality sold me the first time, I've never been this excited about a character before solely based on two episodes.
Kyon recieving the brunt end of Haruhi's creativity sold me the second time. Actually it's more of the interaction between Kyon and Haruhi that won the day :D
Mikuru and the tortured muppet sounds sold me the third time. Simply could not stop laughing and after reading what Haruhi was saying while harassing Mikuru, was incapacitated with laughter.
Hmm maybe I shouldn't have rated the episode so high, since it seems that it will be getting better and better as episodes are aired...

Well yeah, I tend to not give early episodes high ratings but Suzumiya Haruhi is an exception. I can't remember the last time a show made me this hyped about. Not even last year's Zettai Shounen and Kamichu! or School Rumble were on such a level. :)
The second episode finally is able to shine in all its beauty. The animation is stunning and lightyears ahead of most other shows. The high production values were already apparent in the first episode but you could only see the real thing in the last minute and the ending. This time you've got it for 24 minutes on the screen. Kyoto Animation banzai!
The narration style, it's great that they kept it in and most of the episode looks like being from Kyon's point of view. All the scenes where he looks down to Haruhi or the scene where he looks out of the window and follows Haruhi's actions, the onscreen view copies exactly how it should look and it keeps also all the angles, for example when he looks down on her because of the height difference. :)
Anyway, favourite scenes for episode two:
- Haruhi finally decided what to do for bukatsu. Just too hilarious, first dragging Kyon down so that he bangs his head on the table and afterwards him going: "Ok, ok, now calm down, we're still in class." The looks of everybody else - priceless. :)
- The moe explanation scene, great. "Moe! Moe!!".
- Haruhi being annoyed by having smaller breasts than Mikuru, I "lol"ed. ;)
- Mikuru after being dragged into the clubroom. With the violin piece in the background that was a really great effect.
- The everyday hairstyle change was also quite funny.
As for the future, I'm looking forward to a Haruhi dressed in a bunnysuit. :)

I understand what you mean; this series has generated new levels of anticipation for me, and breathed some life into what I feared was becoming a stale industry.

I love how in this episode she basiclly kidnapped that girl (sorry dont know there names yet but i will soon i hope lol) to be part of the group, and hoping she does more strange yet amusing things in the near future :)
More awesomeness. I really do love this series. Espeically Mikuru.

However...

Ok. I've watched this anime. I've stopped laughing (somewhat... I think...-gisg
..ok, back, sorry, I just remembered the ca 14605468
back again. Seriously this time... and I think I just broke my numpad.
ANYWAY.
This anime is TEH funnies on SO many levels... episode 1 was great, if a bit confusing (and funny in a "Manos, the hand of fate" way), but episode 2 really won.
Back in Shuffle, I simply loved how Rin's voice could go down two octaves and deliver dry comments for hilarious results; I can perfectly understand why his seyuu was chosen to be Kyon. He's perfect for the role; and it's not often I say something like that about a male seyuu! :heh:
As for the other characters... Haruhi is a total hoot. She's honestly the strangest Anime girl I've ever seen... and after Air, Mahou Sensei Negima and Lain, that's saying a lot! :heh: I absolutely like her randomness; she feels like a stubborn, somewhat agressive Luna Lovegood.
And I Love Luna Lovegood. So that's a good thing.
Mikuru... I kinda pity her; if I'd been her, I would have totally been freaked if
some crazy girl brought me in a room where a guy was already waiting, locked the door, then started talking about my cuteness and breast size.
...that is, of course, assuming I became a girl in the process of being in her place...
Actually, I'd be pretty freaked if a girl started talking about my breast size anyway! :heh:
As for Yuki... I'm sure her Ayanami-ness will hook on to me pretty soon.
The episode 1 OP was painful, but the real one is pretty damn good.
The ED is excellent, though, especially for the animation; dancing Haruhi FTW!
Animation... general Kyoto Animation goodness, so nothing but flawless praise there, hope they can keep it up.
...and that's about it. I'll DEFINITELY be stalking this anime, like Haruhi after an Alien. :D

That and Haruhi's reasons for kidnapping Mikuru are what sealed the deal for me and Kyon's commentary was just too damn funny.

Yes, definitely looking forward to the bunnysuit! :D
The glimpse of Haruhi at the end of ep1 hooked me, and this ep slammed my funny bone to itty bitty pieces! Just listening to ultra-enthusiastic Haruhi speak is a narcotic in itself... :heh: I don't know what else to say!
aaw! poor mikuru, she got "abducted" :heh:

Espeically Mikuru.
You me both, she's too cute for words. This is already my #1 currently airing anime and I'm hoping it's going to stay at #1. Great animation, characters, comedy, it's got it all. I so totally love this already :D
This is only about the 3rd time I've given something a perfect 10.
edit: Ok, so I don't feel like changing my Alice avatar, but I certainly just found something for a new sig.
edit2: Seriously, they couldn't have picked a better person to play Kyon. Tomokazu Sugita has the perfect voice for those narrations.
First time I've *ever* scored an early episode a "10" (I tend to think of this as ep1 and the first one as ep0 ... as apparently so do the creators).
I'm more a fan of Suzumiya but Mikuru makes the cutest little squeak noises, my favorite being when Suzumiya tells Kyon to grab Mikuru's breasts. I can't even pretend to mimic those noises.
"Do I know you from somewhere?" ... it is going to be very interesting to watch this play out if some of the spoil/rumors I'm trying to avoid hearing are true.
I just hope the series doesn't go ultra-tragic ... the chaotic energy being projected is just really uplifting.

Tragic has no place in a series like this. It'd fail big time for me if they tried that. Me keeps fingers crossed.
And Suzumiya is probably about a hair's breadth away from Mikuru for me. Mikuru just won my heart with the way she speaks and the way she moves and bounces around while speaking in the '1st' episode :) And that's not mentioning the bunny or maid outfits either ;)
Well we will learn of what the 'melancholy' in the title is about. As others have mentioned its not just comedy through and through but those non-comedic scenes are carried really well.

I think all of the characters (including Nagato Yuki and Koizumi Itsuki) are interesting Sure, Haruhi and Kyon themselves are the best but I think their interaction would have been limited had the other 3 members do not exist in the series.

It won't really come to that, although I predict the denpa-talk later will turn off some of you in here, while sending the others into the stratosphere. The core of the story is actually somewhat of a serious one, it's just constantly buried under mountains of senseless-comedy and totally confusing talks. Every now and then, things will get serious for once (besides the denpa-talk events) and we will be able to see the "true" story behind all the disguise.
Episode 02 was a perfect anime episode if you ask me, and hopefully the episodes after this shall be the same - all i'm asking for is the same level of funny-ness that Kyon can delivery.
Despite what I thought about the way Rin's character evolved in Shuffle! -- his VA Sugita was priceless. I absolutely love his delivery and the way he flexes his voice.
Mikuru's squeaks .... ya know I keep looping those ... they're just amazing, particularly the one she emotes when Suzumiya offer's Mikuru's breasts to Kyon.
"denpa" .... (radio waves?) .... eh, we'll see - I fully expect Suzumiya to go into a lot of "Dan Ackroyd" style explanations of phenomena (reference: Ghostbusters).

Well we will learn of what the 'melancholy' in the title is about. As others have mentioned its not just comedy through and through but those non-comedic scenes are carried really well.Even episode 2 hints that there's definitely more to this than just comedy. My prediction (still) is that it'll turn into a character analysis for Haruhi... which I highly anticipate. She's just such a unique and truly eccentric main character that it'd be an utter shame if she isn't explored, IMO.

Give them the red pill even if there is a hint given. I would definitely don't want to be spoiled and would like to continue to cherish every episode as it is thrown at me. The horribly spoiled know-it-all who are bursting to show off their ill gotten knowledge can eat a potato for all I care.
This episode (ep 2) gets a 9 though I wanted to add a few more decimals. The reason behind this grading is the memory of episode 1 is still fresh as I have watched the sub version twice and the raw once for that episode. Incredibly, Kyon's monolgues still yield funny.

Man, it's been awhile since I felt this way about an anime! I give this episode a solid 10!
Is Kyon gay? I mean, never, never has a guy not gotten a woody from another sexy girl giving a rub rub, of another cute girl's breast at near point-blank range! But then, Haruhi tells Kyon to grab them. Yet, he doesn't. And I mean, I've seen gay guys grab supermodel tities on live television, as to inspect them.
Yet...

I'm not sure I can answer this without insulting someone...
He's mature? He thinks of women as people and he just cannot believe she's treating Mikuru that way and he feels sorry for her? He doesn't think assaulting her is a good idea? He's starting to wonder if Suzumiya needs medication?
Lemme see.... example: I was just out of college, one of my fellow engineers (who also happened to be pretty) had a serious clothing malfunction while we were working on some equipment. Lessee, did I say, "omigod, boobage!!!!" .... no .... I helped her recover - she thanked me - and I did not go blabbing about it. For some strange reason ... she trusted me after that.
My respect for Kyon went up a 1000% in that scene when he extricated Mikuru from Haruhi's clutches and then made sure Mikuru knew she had nothing to fear from him.

Contrary to popular belief, not all guys are retarded or perverted morons.
I, for one, find it refreshing to have a strong, "normal" lead in an anime. Or, at the least, a character that I can relate to immensely.

It wasn't added, most likely, because the Anime is trying to stick to the novels more.
It's generally better to follow the source material.
If Kyon was meant to blush, he would have. Kyoto Animation wouldn't miss something like that.

It's likely out of character for Kyon to blush at this stage, since he is meant to be the the "calm one".

As far as endings go, this is my favourite of ANY series I've watched. The music is catchy and fun, the dance sequences are so cute it's unreal (Mikuru's finger waggling is adorable :D ), it just rocks on every level possible. Normally I'm not a fan of endings, it's always the OP that gets my interest. Not so here though :)

Its nice to have a funny light hearted series to watch plus Suzumiya is so damn cute especially when she was getting pissed cause the girl she forced to join the club breast were bigger than hers and she just sat there grouping for like ever (I know every played that sequence at least twice dont deny it) really likeing it so far cant wait to see what other crazy shit she gets everyone into. ummmm its nice to see that i am not the only one but kyon did seem intrested at all in the breast grabing and he said "i am not intrested in that sort of thing" seems kind of fishy to me

I could not stop laughing when the class got their seats changed and Kyon said, "Farewell, Haruhi" and then sang "foooooorevahh." So funny.
Lets avoid Shuffle! talk, shall we? Series over and done.
With Xell and npal? Vexx, Im afraid to tell you this.. you are a bit too young :uhoh:

I volunteered to be voluntary arrested by either Haruhi, Yuki or Mikuru .. preferably the latter

Now look what you've done... I've got coffee all over my monitor... too young. :)
thats worth a cookie all by itself.
Well.... other than the voice actor carry over - the two series have almost zero to do with each other and if "writingsucks"vs"aintitgreat" chant spills over here then we won't get to talk about Haruhi and all the good vibes will get dirty.
Sugito is perfect to voice Kyon and Gotou rocks as Mikuru --- and thats all the connection I'll mention other than the writers for Haruhi have some very good source material to work with and it *looks* like they "get" it.
Hirano sparkles as Suzumiya .... can't really say much for the others outside of Kyon's buddy (gotta look him and his VA up).
Kyon has the potential here to be listed with Rentarou as well as Yukito and a few others.
As I said early on, Suzumiya can pull my tie anytime ... but Mikuru is squeaky-huggable-cute.

re: all the Shuffle talk
Haruhi says, "Talk about any show other than mine and HEADS WILL ROLL!" :nono:
Suzumiya has spoken... :)
Yes, it's present on XP1dIgZwSI's raw, and probably on the raw that a.f.k. used. So um... high Q notch filters on your sound system ftw? <_<
I hear it on his Fate/stay night raws as well. Must be his ADC picking up interference from his motherboard or something...
I downloaded the RAW that a.f.k is using, yes the HF tone is there. It's not a.f.k fault although I'm hoping they are gonna re-release the HQ version which doesn't has that problem.
After reading HydrogenAudio (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=17212&hl=15734) forum, now I know that the noise comes from NTSC system which has 525 lines * 29.97 fps => 15.734 kHz while in PAL: 625 lines * 25 fps => 15.625 kHz. It's the tone that I hear when I turn on TV but I don't know how it gets into the anime capturing process. They are not using Mic, are they?
Anyway, 30dB attenuation using notch filter fixes it just perfect :heh:
edit: The HF tone in Ep. 1 also comes from the RAW, NOT the "bad film production" effect :p

I think anyone who hated the show enough to give it 2~3 would have stopped watching at episode 1.:heh:
You can think Ep. 1 as a filter for non-haruhiist. SOS-dan needs only dedicated member:heh:

So funny.I don't want to kill any humor from that scene, but I'd like to throw in a comment about that. I think Kyon was actually saying/singing "Au Revoir" and not "forever." It didn't feel right readint it translated as "forever." :uhoh:

Of course, on the other hand, this show is going to be hammered in the inevitable worst anime and most overrated anime of 2006 threads by people who saw epsiode one and didn't get that it was a movie the characters made.:uhoh: It's amazing how any show, no matter how great, will have it's core of haters.

About the whole "over-rated" thing...
IMHO, "over-rated" is what people use to criticize shows for the hell of it. They have nothing bad to say about the show, so they used that term instead.
If a show has a bad plot, or bad animation, or bad voice acting, it would NEVER be called "over-rated". In effect, only decent shows can be called over-rated, which means...
..."over-rated" is a complement! Surprise!:D

why do that?
it'll ruin the fun :p
besides why force people to watch something they don't have the paitience to sit though?
All this means is that the viewers of Haruhi are ones who (i would like to believe) a more mature attitude, and it shows because they survived the first episode.
patience is a virtue, and fortunately for us, the majority of emotionally-hormoned unstabled teenagers are quite incapable of achieving.
not trying to sound elitist, but it's kinda nice to be able to have a relatively normal civil discussion without the constant one-line posts.
Besides, the older the viewing audience of Haruhi means we have more money to spend on Haruhiism! yay Hatuhiism! :)
The end of Episode 2 soundtrack (right before ED) has chobits vibe to it O.o I thought maybe the music was done by the same company, but it's not ~.~
Anytime the words "over-rated" or "suck" is used... you can lop 1000 credibility points off of the review. Its possible those two have become part of the "basic 500 words" of english used by lesser sentients these days.

But there is a fundamental difference between "over-rated" and "suck".
"Suck" can be used to describe any body of work with complete disregard of actual quality of the product. But "over-rated" can only ever be used on works that actually have some degree of merit. As such, instead of disregarding a review that consider a product "over-rated", I would instead consider it proof that the product must be at least decent.

But when saying that something "sucks" or is "over-rated" is mainly a matter of views, subjective views. So, even if the product has some degree of merit, if the reviewer has a negative opinion nothing can be done to change their mind.
The problem however, arise by the fact that they are creating an opinion based solely in one (two at best) episodes of Haruhi. So, they are free to do so, so we are to ignore them and form our own opinion.
About the over-rated thing. People who say that are, to my eyes, people who can not deal with a different kind of presentation like was the first episode. They are people who can not figure the small details of presenting the representation of a "live action" (bad) amateur movie in an anime format.
Or are just bashing for the sake of it, in this case not even Haruhi could do something. Or could she?

Oh, in that case we are talking about apples and oranges.
After many years, I no longer give a damn of convincing someone that something is good. If they can't tell the difference between gold or lead, that's their problem.
In fact, it's totally futile to try to convince someone that their entire life philosophy is wrong and that they better convert to my thinking. I leave such things to TV Evangelists.
It's more important that I am able to detect a decent show, than trying to convince the unworthy that they should watch them. As such, I find it useful that "This is Over-Rated" can be used to detect good quality shows despite bad quality reviewers.
Many people out there are just not worth your time. Don't even bother to prove you are right to them, you have better things to do.
At the beginning of the first episode I was close to stop watching it, thankfully I didn’t have anything better to do so I somehow endured Mikuru’s singing. I’m really happy I didn’t quit coz this show may be made of gold. I hope it won’t go worse later. I have really high expectations for this one. Right now I'm giving it "8" with hope it may score even higher.
I've gotten so many people to love this show as I do. Everyone I've shown the series to has loved it, with one exception - my sister, who thought the first episode was too strange and refused to watch the second. She's missing out on an amazing thing :)

Not really... "Over-rated" in my mind means that the show may be good, but its popularity is way too high for how good the show is. For example, I would consider a mediocre show with a ton of people watching overrated. "Suck" in my mind means that the show is actually bad. Both need proper backing statements to become useful comments, but I can certainly say "Anime A is over-rated. I don't get why people are so interested in the shallow characters, lack of plot and cheesy music."
Then I think this show is under-rated. It's relatively good, but how many people are watching?
Kaoru Chujo

A great but unusual anime like this will definitely have its detractors. When so many people are falling all over themselves to say how great something is, it's tempting to try and find fault with it. We're rating it so high that surely we must be over-rating it. Personally, I don't think so, but it would be a logical thing to think.
In any case, the style of humor is not to some people's taste. Too bad for them. I class the humor here with that of my other favorite comedy anime, Ichigo Mashimaro: subtle absurdity.
In Japan, on 2channel, the "anti-" Haruhi thread ("Suzumiya Haruhi, the worst diarrhea anime of this season") is up to five threads (~5000 posts). But there are now 45 threads in the main forum for Haruhi (i.e., over 44,000 posts). Fate/Stay Night, the big hit of the winter season, only has 61, with a three-month head start.
Not really... "Over-rated" in my mind means that the show may be good, but its popularity is way too high for how good the show is. I should have added that usually when those words are used... its usually done without any reference support. You're just supposed to bask in their supreme judgement. :)
The "anti-Haruhi" thread.... heh, Kaoru is being too nice. It seems like there's always a group in the back of the hall who prefer to "diss" everything ... the terminally jaded who are actually no fun at all to be near because they're only capable of producing "negative waves, Moriarity".
Its not enough they don't "get" something ... they have to dump on it to make themselves feel better about not getting it. An example might be the "llamas" in MMOs who make fun of roleplayers.
Note this is different from the folks who have problems or don't like something and support their reasoning and note that opinions may differ.
Well I have to say not typicaly being a fan of this sort of thing and the actual first episode being almost painful to watch. This was actually entertaining and funny. The best part of the show is Haruhi herself.

2006-04-15, 18:26
this show is great. Haruhi is funny, but for me it's Kyon's side comments that are hilarious (espeically in the first episode). The only thing that bothered me was sometimes, it was hard to tell whether Kyon was actualy talking to haruhi or he was just thinking, but I guess it doesn't matter much, since she doesn't listen to him anyways ;)
The only thing that bothered me was sometimes, it was hard to tell whether Kyon was actualy talking to haruhi or he was just thinking
When Kyon was thinking to himself "Anyway, isn't cutting it the day after I point it out a bit hasty?", it's pretty obvious he also asked... since she very clearly answered.
but I guess it doesn't matter much, since she doesn't listen to him anyways ;)
She was listening VERY intently to his discussion in the middle of Ep. 2 about humans innovating and genuises and stuff... And look where that got him ^^;;
If they can't tell the difference between gold or lead, that's their problem.
Well...."One man's junk is another's treasure". Just because you consider *Anime ABC* to be a good anime does not mean that your opinion is absolute.
About "Animes that don't deserve the popularity are considered over-rated" part....meh, isn't that subjective as well? What you may consider as an anime that "doesn't deserve the hype", doesn't mean that what you say is more accurate than another person's opinion.
How about this: People who are bashing others who call SH over-rated, have you EVER done the same with another anime? If you have, your opinion is as valid as a "____tard" (insert anime name there), which is essentially non-existance.
One last thing I really don't understand: Why are the people, in this sub-forum, bashing "anti-SH" people, when non of such post have appeared yet? It just seem to have the same level of maturity as people who continue watching shows that they dont like, and followed by complaining about it in an online forum. Yes, by social standards, you people (who bash bashers) are more "correct" in the sense that you dont do stupid things like making yourselves suffer, but complaining about people who dont even exist yet is bringing down the standard to the same level as the people you are complaining about in the first place.
So please, stop going off-topic by ranting about bashers who have yet to appear in this sub-forum, will you? I dont see any of you going off to the Top 5 most overrated anime? (http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?t=16161) thread to justify your points regarding the mis-use of the word "over-rated". I have a burning sensation (and temptation) to label some of you as hypocrites.
Is it that hard to leave "anime bashers" alone? Must you people stoop down to their level?
That said, Episode 1 of Suzumiya Haruhi was a little underwhelming for me, even though I do "get it". S.H episode 2 ranks, in enjoyability, almost as high as Ouran episode 2. Animation quality is spendid as usual (it IS animated by the renowned Kyo-Ani afterall), pacing was excellent, and the comedy was not out-of-place.
I'll probably give the episode a 8.5.

....That said, Episode 1 of Suzumiya Haruhi was a little underwhelming for me, even though I do "get it". S.H episode 2 ranks, in enjoyability, almost as high as Ouran episode 2.... Your spoilered post made a lot of sense: beauty is in the eye of the beholder, to at least some extent. In fact you proved your point by placing Ouran ahead of Haruhi, since I consider Ouran enjoyable but quite ordinary, while Haruhi is unique and an instant classic, especially for its fabulous humor, to say nothing of the unexcelled animation, even in ep1. To say episode 1 was "underwhelming" is to me like saying the Grand Canyon is just a big ditch. Every cell in my body was laughing as I watched ep1. Of course, the only thing more beholder-dependent than beauty is humor.

*shrugs* so one person voted a 1 in the poll, it's not the end of the world. I think there's too much emphasis on what others like. What's most important is what you, as the viewer like. And if you find someone that mutually enjoys what you like, then there could be some discussion that comes out of it. I'm not really sure if the poll is really necessary for a discussion thread, but it's the will of the mods. Personally, Suzumiya Haruhi and Ouran HS Host Club are in a tight race for the throne for this season with Suzumiya having the slight advantage from its near-perfect presentation, but hey that's my view and not everyone agrees with it.
Now on-topic for a little bit, I can't wait for episode 3 to be subbed, hopefully the rest of the cast will be introduced...or hell I'd settle for Tsuyura-san being introduced :D

I don't give tens to anime episodes unless they strictly deserve it.
This episode started off very quick and I made up my mind already: "Want to play fast? Then don't dare to show any slowliness!". Yeah, that's what I thought.
Surprisingly enough, the episode kept its fast (somehow even exasperated) pace all the way through, and above kept the substance and the brilliancy. Haruhi candidated as best character of 2006 as for now, Kyon may be the best male lead? Don't really know, but the premises are astonishing.
School Rumble meeting Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou (His and Her Circumstances) ? Who knows.
Meanwhile it's just Suzumiya Haruhi, whereas animations, voice acting, (?) story (?), characters, enjoyment, there's really nothing out of place so far.
10/10
*shrugs* so one person voted a 1 in the poll, it's not the end of the world. ...
Really.. all the polls are good for is to check how people whose judgement you trust voted when checking out a new series. The numbers alone tell me nothing. Even if 99% of the votes said it was garbage... if the 1% who liked it consisted of people who have not led me astray in other recommendations - I'd give it a look.
Certain people I've developed a sense of that if they like something, the odds are pretty good I'm going to like it. Other people I use for contrarian checks --- if they like it, I probably won't.
Haruhi has been interesting because people I otherwise would completely disregard also have expressed a love for the show, so its always a wobbly balance :)
So... when Furudanuki, Pellisier, and a handful of others like something - I tend to listen. Hopefully when a handful of other people hear I like something, they take note.

For those like me with a strange interest in seeing the actual places on which anime backgrounds are based, there is a page found through 2channel that is posting photos of them episode by episode, along with caps from the anime (the photos are apparently the actual photos used by staff in making the backgrounds):
http://haruhi.sonnabakana.com/file.html
The images for episode 2 are on the following two pages:
http://haruhi.sonnabakana.com/img/Lv.1_up31282.jpg
http://haruhi.sonnabakana.com/img/hikaku2.jpg
I believe all the images are from a city called Nishinomiya, between Osaka and Kobe.

Somebody voted a "1". :(
Overrated: Quality does not meet popularity expectations.
Suzumiya Haruhi is definately not overrated. Very well underrated, actually, until popularity soars even more (not according to seeds:leechers, though XD).
if it makes you feel any better the person who gave it a 3 for the first episode gave this one a 9 or 10. gotta love non-secret ballots lol ;)

Nice info. Thanks.
Can't seem to access the episode 2 links tho. Keep getting a 403 Forbidden error. :(

The server doesn't seem to like external links. Try to copy&paste the links (and maybe clear your browser cache) instead of clicking them. That worked for me. :)

In future maybe I'll use the 2channel trick of putting links in like this:
ttp://haruhi.sonnabakana.com/file.html
Cropping off the initial "h" so it doesn't turn into a link, but forces you to actually cut and paste, then either add the "h" or just use the address without the "http://" .

If you've watched KyoAni's other works (Air comes immediately to mind,) you'll find that it's all a part of KyoAni's attention to detail and is nothing too new comming from them. It's pretty awesome in my mind, basically taking a tour of some place in Japan while watching an episode.

The first time I saw this was with Uta~Kata (which was done by Gotou Keiji with gimik and HAL). Someone posted shots of many of the places in the anime, which were all in Kamakura and Enoshima. Then they actually had videos on the DVD featuring the seiyuus (Honda Youko and Asano Masumi) going to the places their characters went in the anime.

I just love this anime.. Its interseting how they made a superstitious girl the main char besides kyon who was the guy ^^.
Also I love the ending.. I actually spent like 25 minutes trying to memorize their dance until I saw myself in the mirror thinking "WTHELL AM I DOING"

I can't give this a 10 because its not quiet asskickery on a GTO or Berserk scale, but it deserves a 9.

Look at it this way we get ass kicking in every ep... in a series that isn't based on fights...
ep00 - Yuki Mikuru
ep01 - Haruhi Kyon
ep02 - Haruhi Nerd Captain
something i've found funny in episode 2

That's all I can say.
Yea, this is grand. I'll have to watch more eps; Suzumiya is outrageous.
OP/ED are rad. I seriously cannot believe that the dance for the ED is really online with instructions, fan tanstic!
10/10
I just wanted to say I gave 10 too to ep.2, as I've watched until ep.5 so far.
Then that this post is still good as ep.8 was aired a while ago.
Thanks Pellissier, as usual.
When the series is over, a "what's your favorite episode" thread might come in handy. Don't you think?
I mean giving ten to each one of them doesn't help. :p
I only gave 9 to ep.1 though. :heh:

Does anybody know if Kyon means Physic shows or psychic shows in the beginning?
Haruhi's introduction of her random/aggressive personality sold me the first time...
Kyon recieving the brunt end of Haruhi's creativity sold me the second time.
Actually it's more of the interaction between Kyon and Haruhi that won the day :D
Mikuru and the tortured muppet sounds sold me the third time.
Simply could not stop laughing and after reading what Haruhi was saying while harassing Mikuru,
was incapacitated with laughter.
Yes, this quote is a good summary of the strong points of this episode.
I however, don't believe this was a perfect episode, there can always be improvements.
So I gave it a 9. (I probably would have given it 9.25 or so though)
Yes, I believe the next episodes are even better than this episode,
even if this has Haruhi's introduction and odd personality.
This is probably because she doesn't get as bored in this episode.

I'm so sorry to push this topic back to the topic but there is a NEED to:

Episode 2 of Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutu re-made
Cast: lots of gundamns(can someone name them? I know none of them...)
ZOMG!
Hats off to that guy.
Although... he does seem to have waaaay too much free time on his hand....
More like infinite free time :p The guy is nuts. He even did the ED sequence with Gundams... For the love of God, find him a girlfriend!

Just watch episode 2 subbed. It should be there...
Damn lol I've always wanted to do some kind of video with my mechs, I wonder how this guy can deal with so many pics, he's insanely good lol
If translating Japanese means the Japanese words that appeared in the video:
The piece of paper at the start: Literature club
Yuki's book: Shini no Londo (not sure what it means lol)

I'm starting to get the feeling that this is a hit-or-miss series. Either you like Suzumi or you don't.
For me, it's a miss - I simply didn't find it funny.

It get's funnier. Oh well, that's up to you.
The series has many aspects that recall works by Douglas Adams, Kurt Vonnegut, or even Monty Python. So.... just like those bits of entertainment and literature, you'll either "get it" or you won't.
I don't even watch the show for its comedy, I watch the show for its deep story, episode 1 and 2 has already presented enough.
If one can't grab both episodes, the problem lies with the person.

I don't think C.A. meant it that harshly. However, as much as I want Haruhiism to spread, if you didn't enjoy/"get" the first two episodes, it might be in your interest to simply stop there.
As for it being a hit/miss series, there are people that have enjoyed the series but not to the level of us hardcore fans. There is a form of complexity within the series that if you can't grasp, you probably wouldn't enjoy it.

I did make it through episode 2 and the first few minutes of episode 3.
I suppose if I'm not "hooked" by then, chances are pretty good that I won't ever "get it".

Well, she wasn't in the music club for long, but in this episode there is a scene of her with the music club (I'm assuming it is the music club, anyway) where she is playing a trumpet. This happens around time mark 08:14 for the a.f.k. release. Haruhi also is shown playing a piano in the OP, but I don't remember her doing that anywhere else in the series.

 I never noticed that. Shame on me. :heh:
I was concentrated on the girls from the track and field club trying to talk her in. :p
And yeah, I also think that's a trumpet. I don't know why I missed that. Maybe that's because it's very short. Then, the lighting of the classroom rocks, so I suppose that's what I was watching every time. :D
