Well they crammed as much as possible in this one and it felt a little rushed. The animation wasn't anything spectacular except for the insane rooftop battle between Harima and Hanai. All my favorite moments were done well, tenma trying to kill herself for karasuma, sawachika dying at the hands of karasuma, and mikoto vs harima:heh:. Stuff that was added like the tsumugi and hanai thing and nakamura's little story about masaru at the end of the ep was pretty good too. The ending to the survival game was great. Next time preparations begin for the culture/arts festival.

Episode 03 Screencaps and Summary (http://randomc.animeblogger.net/2006/04/16/school-rumble-ni-gakki-03/)
Yea, I second Hiken's statement that this felt a little rushed, mainly towards the end, in the aftermath the next day. Still, I was pretty happy that they set some time aside to tell the Glasses Faction story (YuukiXHanai). That gun battle between Hanai and Harima was pretty cool too.

the gun fight between Harima and Hanai is a reference to the movie, Equilibrium. The technique they use to avoid each other's shots is called Gun-Kata and the scene where they fight melee range is the last battle scene in the movie between the protagonist and antagonist.
Also, the way Harima reloads and draws his guns using the gimmick in his sleeve is also from the movie.

Well i died laughing watching some unknown sub from somewhere when they spell karasuma-kun as kamasutra-kun

I completely agree. One of my favorite movies.
Anyway this episode was in one word: awesome.
I love how they make the dramatic scene light hearted. Although the scene between Tenma and mr. turtle… >.<
that was a bit too much.

I was saddened by this episode, 2 had built this episode up so well and then everything came crashing down :(
The blood makes it a bit inconsistent with the last ep, I think. The fighting was great, but I concur with the others about it being a bit rushed. The pacing makes me wonder if they'll get to the public bath scene next ep :eyespin:.
edit: Blah, nevermind. The next ep titles answered it for me.

they're really blowing throughthe manga I expected the survival game to take up like four episodes at a minimum and they did it in two.
I liked the Harima/Hanai rooftop animation and the gunkata is always fun to watch (enjoyed it when Grenadier did it), I just think the rest was really rushed. all of a sudden the band showed up and then woosh everyone dead. And yea the blood was lame. I don't know why they suddenly decided to throw it in there. Maybe it was all post-production film effects by Takano ;)
Meh, I think its for the better. It would look bad when in in first five episodes, four were devoted to an event.
Still wish they used Eli more, making all the himes and ojousamas look bad :(
9/10, the music was the best

Heh. Harima waiting for Hanai before shooting Mikoto = Win. Miko-chan~ XD
And I don't know what's in the manga, but two episodes is plenty for this survival game. Moving on...
Lmao, I could've sworn through the battle scene of this episode I thought I was watching a Chow Yun-Fat / John Woo movie. Esspecially with the gun fight , now that you mentioned it totally is like the movie Equilibruim. Anyways I thought the episode was great and entertaining.
Definately Harima's delay finishing shot on Mikoto was awsome, waiting for Hanai so he can see it lol. Thats just plain evil yet genuis at the same time.

Boo hoo! The whole survival game was so interesting and I have to agree with others that it ended a tad too early.
What's with all the sudden blood effects being added in this episode? People were dieing and getting shot in the head but no blood from episode 2...what were the directors thinking.:eyebrow:
Lastly, Akira is eviiil making all the classes fight each so she can go make her own action flick. I wonder if she's going to show it during the school festival. If she does, I can't what for the expressions all the classes are going to have when they see it.

Let me rephrase that.
How come there is blood in episode 3 yet there was no blood anywhere in episode 2. Did the directors screw up or something?

You already answered the question yourself.
The episode 3 battle footage is different, because it is modified by Akira for her film project. The blood, the drama, the freeze frame... They are all there to spice up the film. Akira is a master with CG blood, it appears.

Episode 2 is viewed from the usual perspective. When characters get shot by the airsoft guns, they play dead.
Episode 3 is viewed from the perspective of the movie that Akira is recording. When the game ends, the screen zooms out from Akira's computer. Episode 2 felt closer to the manga, since they went with more 'normal' action sequences. The action scenes in Episode 3 were very much exaggerated in comparison - the addition of the blood and the fight scene on the roof pushes the episode to be almost a caricature of the manga chapters that it was based on. I thought it was an interesting effect.
Definitely better than episode 2 in my opinion. Harima gets back to his badass self. "Miko-chan" at the end was hilarious and opens up a lot of avenues for the show to explore. I still wish that Eri did more though, she really hasn't done anything in these 3 episodes so far.

I seriously enjoyed this episode. Far more than episode 2, as well. Which is odd, because they were basically the same type of humour. I think what worked best for this episode was its absolute breakneck speed. I suppose SR's comedy is probably best when it goes to the extreme, as it did here. And some very subtle relationship development (Miko-chaaan) gets my thumbs up as well.
Highly enjoyable episode.

Seen episode 03, and I saw similarly as Sorrow-K. Also thought it was more amusing than last episode, because it was significantly more overboard (to the point of satirical) than last episode. The scene with the Hanai's "Miko-chan!!!", the Tenma's "NOOOOOOO!!!" (along with the convienient onset of that dramatic music playing), and Hanai's "Harima!!!" had me grinning. And the fact that the whole thing was an action movie rendition further supports the sardonic and over-the-top feel of the 2nd half of the battle. I liked that final scene with the autumn leaves falling where Tenma and Karasuma-kun communicated earnestly with each other. There is something admirable and pure about that atmosphere, complimented by the music, and avoided cheesiness. I think it's these frank and honest scenes that balance SR, counterpart to its comedic aspect: little bits of understandings in SR's general mess of confusion.

Better then last time, more so because it was going somewhere, last time it was like they were showing bit and parts of everyone but he it was a bit more soild in a way they were telling the story.
Like everyone else, I just loved the "Miko-chan!!!!!!!!" (http://www.fileden.com/public/4449928259c78714474114.mp3) Scene. Yep I'll remember it (http://www.fileden.com/public/44499401e5724016951969.mp3) for a long time :heh:
I thought a few moments with the animation, could of been a bit better, but still I loved it. The humor was great, and it was a quite funny to see tenma put a gun to her head ^^; you wouldn't see such a thing in any other show.

This was probably the funniest SR episode I've seen out of both seasons. Nakamura was badass, and all that melodrama. MATTE!!! HARIMA!!!!!!
And that frame of Harima grinning evilly before the shot. I was almost on the floor. MIKO-CHAAAAN!!!
Voice acting was top-notch, totally fitting, and while the animation quality wasn't really up to par with the action, I still enjoyed it.
Now I can't wait for "the duel" to be animated.
This might explain the blood:

Fantastic. And yes, the Miko-Chan grin by Harima and the response by
Hanai and Mikoto was hilarious. Love it.
Best episode ever, because of this one scene:

School Rumble just gets better and better. The whole survival game was just so great... I just hope there won't be a let down... It would be so awesome if they can be on par or even top this in the future.
What I notice in the end here is that Tenma and Karasuma are both developing their relationship. Karasuma actually showed interest and feelings towards Tenma, instead of just curry. That leads Harima out of the picture.
I am pretty sure (well, hoping at least) once Harima realizes this and acknowledges the fact that Temna and Karasuma have feelings for each other, he will move on. I hope he starts realizing how great Yakumo truly is, and starts showing some true interest in her. It doesn't look like she minds either, from her responses to Tenma lecture in episode 1. Eri is my second favorite character in SR, so a love triangle with those 3 would be great.
As for Hanai and "Miko-chan!!!!" it looks like there is definitely some progression there. He doesn't look like he was devastated that people thought he liked Mikota instead of Yakumo (unlike how Harima was devastated when Tenma thought he liked Yakumo). I hope Hanai the best with Mikoto and stay away from Yakumo. She doesn't like him. He should get a clue.
This is definitely one of the greatest love comedies around.

It was a good episode, but not the best I've seen. It's very hard to defeat the two Sports festival episodes from the first season:p
And now I hope we'll get some serious harima x yakumo x Eri action:cool:

I quite agree with El_Capitano.
A good episode, better than the previous, but can't beat the sport festival from season 1.
Anyway, why has no one evoqued the Itoko/Nakamura pairing?
It would be interesting, especially with a Harima/Sawachika relation aside ?
Will it be a "good" reason for Eri to invite herself into Harima's room ... and discover him with Yakumo ! :upset:
Another incoming chaos ... for our only pleasure ! :D
