suikodun 1 gremio (put tears to my eyes), your father, the king and mathiu
suikodun 2 your sister
FF7.... not all that tragic but still whats her face i forgot her name
FF7.... not all that tragic but still whats her face i forgot her name
Erm, it's Aeris.
God dammit, it's Aerith, Aeris in America. How can you say it wasn't that tragic, it was the saddest scene in videogame history. I wept like a baby when that happened. I wanted so much for Cloud and her to be together.
That aside, i loved the Suikoden games as well. Lulu getting killed in Suikoden III was sad too, especially more so because Hugo was my favorite character. Another death that i thought was sad, was when Fortune died in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, she was a cool ass character. There are more, but i have to think about em.

It was extra-tragic if you trained her to be your highest character, had all her limits, all her equipment and everything like that...
First place: Kana from Kana ~Little Sister~
Second place: Umm yeah, probably Aeris/Aerith from FF7.

First place: Kana from Kana ~Little Sister~
Thanks for the spoil. Something that makes you really happy.
Even though Sephiroth is like  in his kewlness...for quite awhile I really felt like bashing his head after the Aeris thing :(
I'm so shallow :eyespin: but white/light light hair is attracting in a weird way...not on an old person though ~_~

Aw dangit! I was in the MIDDLE of Kana! *grumble*
Aries hands down, I can never forget that moment *sniff sniff*
The spoiler tags in the first post didn't really get the point across for some of you, did it? Or do you think it's fun to ruin other people's game experiences? Don't mean to be a grumpy ass or anything (that's Xris' job), but you could take the little extra effort not to spoil it for others.

Already edited. Sorry about that, but the game is VERY OLD, and has come out in multiple platforms. So I thought that those (millions) people already know, and that those who dont most likley heard of it already or aren't going to play the game any time soon.
Yes I will also have to say that it is Final Fantasy 7.
The scene is sooo tragic. The scene is so beautifully made, and when Cloud takes her out to the pond and then let go of her, as she disappears from us descending through the water, the pain and loss that I feel becomes even greater.
Square really succeeded in creating a strong, powerful, emotional scene, a scene where one`s tears just keep on running down one`s cheeks. I was left with an undescribable emptiness in my heart after that scene. I don`t for how long I remained in that place after that scene, but it sure felt like an eternity.
And after that I think it will have to be Final Fantasy 6.
It`s almost as tragic as Final Fantasy 7.
The scene that I`m pointing at is the one that takes place in the middle part of the game. She is stranded on an island. Not long after that, tragecy awaits her.
I won`t reveal more than so. I guess that the ones whom have played it will know what scene I am pointing at.
And then the ending scene of Final Fantasy X. How tragic.

most of the games mentioned are rpg, i think i'm really sad every time Mai dies in KOF 97, she just goes flying and screams 'ANNNNNNNNDYYY', yeah, and also, the bouncing stopped as well. put that aside, Aeris' death is probably most tragic, seeing how unexpected it was, ah well, i liked yuffie better either way. so.
It was extra-tragic if you trained her to be your highest character, had all her limits, all her equipment and everything like that...
I never that problem. I hated Aeris. I was kinda glad she died. Good riddence to that stupid bitch.
The saddest death to a chatacter I actually cared about would have to be
MGS:1The part where Meryl died in Metal Gear Solid 1. I love it when people have a big long speech about the world when they die. Although technically, she didn't die, but it's close enough to a death.
Now that I think about it. These aren't really tragic deaths. They're more really sad deaths. Not really a tragedy at all. In order for it to be a tragedy there must be a tragic flaw with the chatacter and the chatacter must be destined to die. FF7Aeris doesn't really have any Tragic flaws so I would be hard pressed to call her a tragic hero or her death tragic.

WAIT! MG1 was also good...
suiko 3
yeah lulu's death kinda sucked....
and suiko 1 gremio's was.... yeah.
if you play FF6 right, that death doesn't happen... but i only got it to work once after 4-5 tries.

I think Aeris' death was quite a relief, damn, I hated her, she was so damn weak. Luckily I never trained her and HURRAY! One character less to train.

Yeah, she was my favorite character in ff7. None of the other characters were Adequate replacements.

If you think she was weak, you weren't using her correctly. Aeris was primarily a magic user, but if you put her in the first row, and used cure to offset the extra damage she would take, she could be just as effective with physical attacks as the other characters.

you fools are leaving out the time when supermario gets hit by one of those shell things....pure tearjerkerism
I love how the name of the thread is most tragic death of a game character, yet some people expect spoilers to be hidden, sorry i find that retarded. Another death i can't believe i forgot to mention, was from Xenogears. It was when Ramsus died, he was treated so badly by the emperor and the high counsel. The was he just threw his life away sucked. He was a cool character. And yeah the end of FFX did get me all teary-eyed and choked up. I really liked both characters, but that is why we have FFX-2 WEEEEE.

Even though xenogears was one of THE best games EVER. I dont remember ramus death to be very significant, well compared to others likes FF7 that is.

Aeris/Aerith's death was quite tragic because I used her a lot in my battles since she was best at healing everyone. Hmm, another death I found tragic would be Cid in FFIII aka FFVI. I tried so hard to keep him alive, but he died anyway. Arg!
I had cid live in FFVI
As for my thoughts, I cried like a little girl when Auron died in FFX... oh man.. that was so horribly sad (he was my favourite character, I think that's why).

Tidus got me when he started to disappear while he's saying goodbye to Yuna. And came FFX-2.
Aeris gets my vote, she died unexpectedly.

Aerith. And I did exactly as some of you did. I built her up really well and she was the second most developed character behind Cloud. I was so angry and hurt when she died and I was hoping during the rest of the game for a way of getting Aerith back. That hoped died as well when I beat the game. And remember the options and choices that had Cloud choose between Tifa or Aerith?... I always picked Aerith.
Cid's family in FF6 was pretty sad too...
edit#1: yeah you fed Cid bad fish. you can keep him alive by feeding good fishes to him. later on, you can take him to the coliseum to claim his best sword there (i think... )

In Suikoden
germino
In Suikoden 2
Nanami
however both of those are avoidable
In Suikoden 3
Luc and Sara
those two however are not.

Yes. People look at the name and avoid what they are playing or look where they want to see.
and put the characters name in spoiler tags?
Exactly! Since Im playing it, I would have avoided it like a plague. Now my gaming experience is ruined, just because you think it's ok to do so.
Do you honestly mean you wouldn't know which character it is without checking the spoiler?
Yup, but the thing you don't seem to understand is that you are in a comunity, so avoid that selfish point of view.
But I'm sure you wouldnt understand, so let it be, do whatever you want. -_-;;

How can u not pick Tifa over Aerith. Her boobs alone made me forgot about Aerith's death. I think the programmers did that on purpose to cushion the tragic impact of Aerith's passing. Big boobs and short shorts...drool....Aerith who? :heh:
I have to go with FF7.
Aeris die with a lot of useful stuff I put on her :(. At least the first time I played.
thinking about it again... hammer from xenogears....
.....
the circumstances sucked on that one.

Its gotta be Aerith.
And what are you talking about. Tifa is a quiet girl too. Aerith was the one that keeps on asking Cloud about their relationship and stuff... though i dont mind because i like her a lot. Anyways... i liked them both. Yuffie was annoying though. But i didnt hate any of the characters

Maybe it's just tragic to me because I love Sonic so much, and not being able to swim is his one weakness, so since I was little I've always had nightmares of him drowning. But if Sonic ever drowns in a game it makes me cry.
In Sonic Adventure it is soooooooo realistic I could only stand to watch it once. The first time I played I fell off the water-snake and Sonic drowned... I cried for like 30 mins and my Sonic drowning nightmares increased like 10x for a few weeks. After that if he is ever going to down in SA I have to reset it. :(

Most tragic death of a game character ? I'd say myself when i got fragged by an 8 year old on Halo X-Box.

I never liked Aerith enough to care about her death. Actually I was kinda glad to see her go. After she dies the game gets better ... for a while. The only characters in that game I liked were Vincint, Cid, and Tifa.
Being killed by people using the .50 cal sniper rifle in Rainbow Six 3 is pretty tragic too. Not to be confused with the tragic nature of dying to someone with a mac 11/9 in that same game.

ouch i feel for you :p
Breath of Fire 2
I thought Mina from BoF 2 was the saddest, she didnt die but technically she's dead
And i thought Germio was number 106/108 in Suikoden?
i think you can get Germio back if you get all the others, or was that another character that dies?

Hmm I just read all three pages and I didn't see this one mentioned yet so....Aerith from Final Fantasy 7. Ohhh thread is for saddest not funniest, scratch that. I think I was waiting in anticipation for the bloodspray (which never came if I remember) than actually feeling sad for her. If it was Tifa I might of felt a little something. One death that bummed me out a little was in Resident Evil.
When you play through the game as Jill, the master of unlocking, Barry Burton dies towards the end. That was kind of sad because he was there for you most of the game when you needed him and after he dies you examine his body to find him holding a picture of him with his wife and daughters if I remember. I think there was even a letter to them too. Think the fact that I was about to go into the last boss battle with 15 bullets and a combat knife increased the sadness as well.
PS - Speaking of Resident Evil, has anyone seen the new movie? Does Milla show her boobies again? :D :D
PPS - Yes, im a perv.

Errr... all of you are saying FF VII when... you know who dies.... but since I never really played that game or watch it, yeah.
The most tragic death? I'd have to give it to Melfice from Grandia II in my case. The scene was really powerful with all the good voice acting and stuff. Vv *sniffs*

You got one of the bad endings then. Play it through again and make sure you Trust Barry all the time. The new movie is trash. If you are a fan of the games I can not see how you can like this movie as...By this movies story none of the games could have happened.
And as far as tragic deaths I would say Ghaleon on Lunar 2. He had redeemed himself and found peace but died right after. and for that one death in FF7 IMO it is not really tragic as it only happens to make you hate a badly done villian. No real feelings to it at all.

In FF7
the death of Aeris and also Zack. Nothing I should add for Aeris but for Zack I feel very bad for him since I think he is the real hero in the game that made no apperance in the game unfortunately other than side reference from other people (Aeris and Cloud's memory and his parents). He is dead since the begining of the game, but without him the world of FF7 will be entirely different. Cloud in the other hand, is just a coward, (ok no flame now:P).
Also in FF8
the death of Raine, she was just so sweet and lovely in the memory flashback part of game. I feel quite bad for Laguna, he seems to be the ultimate loser in all rpg history, and then many things are not entirely his fault, just bad luck I guess...

You fools! The most tragic death of a game character EVER was Alys in Phantasy Star 4. The way the characters act they make you hope that she'll live, but you know she's going to die and then she does. Truely the greatest tragedy in any game, more tragic than entire planets being wiped out.
Yes Milla probably shows more tit in RE2 than in the first one. The problem however is the director likes to shake the camera worse than cheap HK films...and thus you can't tell what is going on in the fight scenes AT ALL. Atleast in Young and Dangerous I could get the general movements....
Liu Kang was also pretty bad, not tragic, but he didn't deserve that. He's all "I'm going to kick your ass" only to be double teamed and have his neck broken from behind....that was better than the lame ass fatalities in the game. Of course MK is truely pathetic now, such cartoony crappy fatalities, less violent than in MK2.

Any death where I haven't saved in a while and I have to go back and replay through a large section of the game... They tend to have far more impact on me than an NPC's demise.
The quality of writing in games is usually lacking somewhat, far too many of these character deaths are telegraphed (as was stated upthread) and we still need more emotional involvement in our games; the rather narrow field of titles listed in this thread reflects this. It can only get better.

I remembered when I first played PS4 (many) years ago, I thought Alys would be revived later in the game but it just never happened. :(
p.s. Rune and Kyra are such cool characters, I loved PS4. :)

I agreed, now that u've mentioned it. I just loved the music that was played during the flashback scene (can still remember the music).

What about in FF9.
I think it was on the outer continent at that tree with Kuja. Garnet's mom came with her fleet or something like that, all the while Kuja controlled Bahamut. He sent Bahamut to kill the mom and even though she was messed up and all with EIdolin thing it was still sad, I mean the poor girl lost her only mother by a power that was inside her.
Personally for me, it was when I first played MegaMan 2 and he lost all of his energy and EXPLODED!!! I was like WTFBBQ? (I was like 10 back in the day) That event right there made me swore an oath to never let good ol Rockman blow up, ever.
Oh yeah! I remember when Chrono got blown away in Chrono Trigger. Since he was my main character and the highest level, I was hella pissed and sad that he prematurely gets destroyed by Lavos before the end of the game. I'll reenact what happened.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
Emma Emmerich (the little sister)
I thought her death was sad because she had that final request and Hal never came through for her …bastard. It was also sad how her efforts didn't really change anything but at least she died believing she helped the guys out. Her character's just tragic all around.
I'm waiting for a game death to qualify as "tragic" first.
