This is the first “character poll” of two to come. The poll will have a time limit and after such time voting will be disabled, but the discussion can proceed beyond that. The reason for the time limit on the poll is so that this poll doesn’t overlap too much with the second and final poll.

This is a multiple choice poll and while we won’t restrict you from voting for every character, please try to limit your choice to your top 3 or 4 picks if you can. If you like the entire cast equally, then so be it, but if you can narrow it down a bit, then that’s even better. If you like one character the most, then don’t feel the need to vote for anymore.

Well I basically voted the 3 characters that are present in my sig :D Unfortunately I can't really separate my experience of the characters in the anime and the novel so this reflects both.

1st choices: Haruhi/Yuki
I can't decide between these two. Haruhi because she's the one who sealed the deal (of following the anime) for me after watching Asahina Mikuru no Bouken ep00. Never have I felt so compelled to fanboy a character who only appeared on the screen for not more than a minute. Yuki I liked initially because of her Rei-ness but that is now secondary. It is the development of her character later on that makes her shine.

2nd Choice: Tsuruya-san
She's good in the anime so far but she's even more amazing in the novel! Infectious laugh, genki-ness that can rival Haruhi's. Put the two of them in one room and chaos could very well ensue.

2nd Choice: Kyon. His attitude is much like mine in real life (highly sarcastic), and in my opinion, he is what keeps the show going (excluding the fact that he's the narrator XD)

I've always had a top 3: Haruhi, Kyon, and Ryoko. But with the ops wanting to limit choices to 4, who to choose: Yuki or Mikuru? Yuki's 'fast chanting' is teh win, but Yuko Goto is, well, 'Guuto!'.

Hmm tough decision. Better do it the Haruhi way, ie. leaving it to chance. Coin flip time!

For the life of me, I can't think of a character I really like. I love the show for the crazyness, intriguing plot and great animation. But the characters are all a bit too weird for my liking. 8)

PS: Please don't think of this post as "bashing Suzuharu". It's just a request for another poll option. 8)

Mine choices are:
1st choice: Haruhi / Kyon - Liked them both the most. Haruhi's 'eccentricities' rivals Kyon commments dripping with sarcasm. :heh:

2nd choice: Yuki - the 'silent' type character done right.

3rd choice: Itsuki - not much I know about Itsuki, but the whole conversation of him and Yuki in ep1 while Yuki was standing in the window had me LOL literally, for the whole duration of the conversation. My parents actually thought I was going nuts laughing so loud all by myself in the room.

I voted for Yuki and Itsuki, with my preference being in that order.

Yuki... I'm not sure I have an especially good reason for liking her. I just like her, you know? She's calm, quiet, reserved... quite different from most of the other characters. I have a thing about simplicity, and in some ways that's what she's like. A breath of fresh air amongst all the insanity that goes on in the show. (Not that the insanity is a bad thing.) Her simple, to the point manner of speaking, and her matter of fact way of doing things... they just make me smile.

But at the same time as being so serious, she's so cute. Especially her run in Episode 4, after she's put the bat in homing mode and hit the ball out of the pitch. ^^ For me her character design is perfect, just the right amount of cuteness without going over the top.

And the finally, her incantations are just awesome. I can't wait to see more of her in action. And not just that, I'm really looking forward to seeing more of he rin eveyr respect, and to seeing her character developed further.

I like Itsuki because he makes me laugh. He always seems to have a stupid smile on his face, and to be totally unconcerned with what's going on. One of my favourite moments, for some reason, is when he slides up to Kyon on the bench in episode 4. Kyon's response to it, "Your face is really close", makes me laugh every time. That may seem like a reason for liking Kyon, but it kind of displays what I like about Itsuki, the fact that he just doesn't seem bothered by anything. He just carries on talking and smiling. Really though... I think I just like the stupid look on his face the whole time. ^^;

Hmm... I'm a bit suprised Yuki is doing so well now. I expected her to be popular two weeks from now, but so far all we've really seen her do in the anime is put a homing mode on a bat. I voted for her, but that's based on what I've read of the novel.:heh:

I also voted for Mikuru and Haruhi. Their interaction is what makes the series work. Even kyon's comments often arise from something Haruhi is doing to poor Mikuru.

I probably should have voted for kyon as well, but I didn't want to vote for more than three characters.

He has the intellect to question what is going on around him. He's also funny as hell with his dry sarcasm.

I restricted myself to just 3 choices (Mikuru and Itsuki haven't shined yet, so they didn't quite make it to "the top or near the top" of my list):

Haruhi: As I originally described her after Ep 2: "this girl's absorbed the Mojo of so many characters and more". She's forging her own character types ('Tsun-FOJ' - where FOJ = Flamethrower Of Joy) and can send me into a berserking frenzy in my Synch Logs without Pani Poni Dash-esque random-crack-reality-twisting. From what little I've read of the novels (up to Vol 1 Ch 5), there's more depth to her than just Tsun and FOJ too. 2 minutes of screentime in Ep 1 and she already made a big impact on me - and Ep 2 sent me crumpling from so much "woivniojfo2ioj2" moments.

Kyon: I can't help but like his sarcasm and helplessness. His rapid-fire narrative/scoldings with his not-that-great-Intelligence is great - it was one of the best things of Ep 1 and I'm glad to see it's still there outside of the film commentary.

Yuki: Ep 4 pwnage. That and reading in the novels on the origin of her Powaa. Seemingly another product of the "AyanamiRei-HoshinoRuri gene pool", but she's fairly well fleshed out even by this early stage. All descendants of a common gene pool will look identical when they're babies - they establish their unique traits after they grow up a bit. In other words, I like how she's already grown to be more than just another Rei/Ruri hybrid clone.

Mikuru, just Mikuru. I'd have voted for several other characters that I also liked but I'll restrict myself to a single vote to make it more meaningful.

Reasons, reasons... because
1)Haruhi and Kyon are the main characters, and for some reason I always go for side characters (something about the Main-Character-factor that doesn't sit well with me).

2)Mikuru is blatantly fanboy-bait. Having a similar reaction as all the guys in the show makes me feel like an adolescent again.

3)Mikuru sets fire to mens' hearts and inspires them to become more chivalrous.

Of course Haruhi is the star. She's great. So I voted for Mikuru. Mainly for the sake of Gotou Yuuko (http://hashihime.atspace.com/Hashi_seiyuus.html#gotouyuuko). I hear excellence honed by roles in 60 (!) ero-games (http://iweb.sakuranet.or.jp/~haruno-c/gameplaza/va_memo3/system/vadb.cgi?action=view_ind&value=00062&namecode=1&sortcont=hard). But also Mikuru really did have an episode to shine in: episode one. Remember that? I look forward to seeing how she develops in later episodes, if she does.

All the characters are wonderful, though. I am very pleased to see Yuki getting her due. Partly because I was one of the hardy few who liked Lemon Angel Project, the last show Chihara Minori was in.

Well.., I guess I'll be the first then..

Despite liking very much Haruhi, Kyon and Tsuruya-san.., not to mencione Yuki and Itsuki; lets face it.., this serie has a tremendous cast of characters..

I will have to go though..., with Asakura Ryoko; this also despite the fact that she has not appeared so much as of yet.

But still.., I am always drawn to the antagonists of the stories.., and in Haruhi.., Asakura seems like the best character for this role.

Hidding beneath that kind and caring persona we have currently seen there is yet much that will surprise us.., so, adding that and the manipulation factor she is able to currently use will just make her a great antagonist in the series, I am sure of it :)

So.., my vote goes for Asakura.

Hmm.... this was a tough decision to make at this part of the series, but since I usually vote for the underdog, or those in the middle who lose to the top girl, I chose Kyon, Mikuru, and Yuki.

Kyon really deserves a vote since he takes a lot of crap from Haruhi, though I think the reason he doesn't complain is because it's no use.
Mikuru.... she's cute, very much like Kaede, though very timid.... How did she get chosen for this? You know, if I didn't see the episode, but listened to the audio part of episode 4, I would have thought it would have belonged to a Shuffle! episode, right up until Haruhi bursts in.
Yuki.... Indifferent, but someone who has a lot of power....:D

Hmm, this thread may be treading on thin ice...

But anyways, my votes go to Haruhi/Yuki and Tsuruya/Kyon.

Haruhi/Yuki: Rather than say, Yuki becomming a tool to develop Haruhi's character, both of their characters/personalities contrast and play on each other a lot. In the end, both Haruhi and Yuki become developped by these contrasts while indirectly having contact with each other.
The most obvious contrasts between the two are quite literally on the surface; Haruhi is overly-hyper versus Yuki who is very reserved in comparison. I think that later on in the series, their mastery of their powers and their awareness of their own destructive power will also be very important to the storyline
I believe that the contrasts between the two characters will become a driving force for the story later on.

Kyon and Tsuruya : Kyon is in the simplest terms, the hero of the story. In a broader scope, he'll fall into a harem lead category what with being around 3 ladies all the time And another one that ones to kill him, presumably because of his good looks and charm and not because he's Haruhi's "key"In the first case, his sarcastic narrative and accessibility to the viewers (being "normal" and all) wins him some appreciation. In the second case, regardles of the fact that he exhibits forms of uselessness is overshadowed by the fact that Haruhi really is an overpowering force. I guess coupled with a more real-life setting, it's reasonable to assume that a wimpy harem lead role is acceptable. This is also leveraged by the fact that his narrative form a method of attack against his oppressor, so that he doesn't seem very wimpy after all. :D

Tsuruya-San is simply genki off the scale. So infections that her laugh could put your face into a goofy contorted smirk. I'd love to see more screen-time for Tsuruya-san.

Sadly I can't vote for Mikuru as my statement from episode 3 still stands, and since all votes are final, I believe I covered a broad enough scope :D

The problem is I like *ALL* the characters ... they are each integral to the show and it would definitely be missing a lot without anyone one of them (perfect "team" ensemble acting show?).
Despite being insane and attracted to Suzumiya --- I voted for Kyon due to his "everyman" approach to this brain-addling situation and for poor brave Mikuru as she risks utter ruination in the task to entertain Haruhi.

If you read closely you will notice that all the people who choose Yuki have read the novels. Or rather, all the people who have read the novels choose Yuki. This should be a good indicator.

Second is Haruhi (she has her part stolen by Yuki later on XD ), and third is Kyon (a distant third).

All 3 are Nr.1 for me :p... well the way I lined them up above is the way I would position them today... lets say that they just keep changing positions every day :D... more then once

It's a good thing they all have super stamina :heh:... I don't believe any of the other characters would resist with the constant change of position I put them throw...

Well usually the fight for #1 is between Tsuruya-chan and Suzumiya-san... can't decide what I like more Tsuruya's laughter or Haruhi's smile... I guess Tsuruya's ahead a little since I identify with her a little... but I'm sure everyone wants to think they're a god deciding the fate of the world every day... so Haruhi is a close contestant...

Yuki's special... maybe I don't like to imagine her move a lot or something... since she usually just stays a solid #2... however... when she goes #1 the other 2 both go #3...

Judgment by the cuteness factor...

All the characters are cute... but here's what I like about them...

Yukithe main thing about her is the fact she always just stairs at some point in space or reads a book just reminds me of me... sometimes... when I "journey into deep space" and just freeze... +++ for her.
One thing that I would really like to see is a smiling Yuki with long hair...
Haruhithe biggest thing I like about Haruhi's character design is the fact that :

She can just go from 1 extreme to another... angry happy, evil good... and ...
...she always smiles with that big dirty little mouth of hers wide open...
TsuruyaHm... lets see...

She's energetic... happy happy... power power... is what I want to hear from an anime character :D

I like smart characters... as in characters that already know what they have to do or that can adapt in an instant to a new environment... having stupid filler episodes were a character learns some stupid simplistic thing just doesn't draw my interest... and I tend to hate the character afterwards for being so stupid as to need it...

Anyway Haruhi's too stubborn to change or to be influenced... Tsuruya looks too stupid to change... as for Yuki... no comment...

Judgment by super powers ...

Well lets see they all seem to be overpowered... yet there powers are very... mysterious and hidden... I suppose Yuki and Haruhi have the edge since they have apocalyptic abilities... but that just means they will move less when they use them... and I like to see some movement when a character expresses his/her abilities... makes it look cool IMO... so Tsuruya-san has a fighting chance ;)...

Other characters counted in my line up so might as well make one or two comments for them (note the above are all Nr. 1)...
Mikuru is #2... for her little scream and cute smile (I still Haruhi's and Tsuraya's better :D )
Kyon is also #2 (it's a coincidence... really :))... main reason is for protecting Mikuru... so he doesn't jump at every little thing but at least he acts when things get too scarry for her... that and his commentaries are 40% of the fun...
Kyon's sister and the kitty are #3... I just love protecting poor helpless unappreciated characters :D...
Kyon's friends (short stuff and the other guy) are #5... I don't really appreciate filler characters :(...

Good thing that a multiple choice is allowed, since the cast is really likeable and one (or at least I) just can't go with only one of them. :)

Kyon and Haruhi as the main pairing take the #1 spot together. They definitely belong to my respective most favourite character lists. And they are what make the show running.

Kyon because of his sarcastic narration and comments. I usually dislike male characters since they are either the greatest losers on this earth (feel free to point out my nick, he's an exception for various reasons =P) or the usual shounen archetypes, beaten up every time just to train and become better, so any characters who aren't like that are immediately a +10 charisma in my book. And Kyon takes it on a solely another level, finally a character who one can, with almost 100%, relate to.

And Haruhi because of her attitude and behaviour. She wants to make this boring world livable and fun and she doesn't care how she reaches this goal. Her ideas and actions are crazy and silly and also a lot of fun. She's eccentric and darn cute, that's of course another point for her.

For the second spot Yuki and Mikuru. Mikuru's "no comment" and the cosplay, definitely her strengths but she's more than just a toy for Haruhi (or is she ;) ), looking forward to her future self to appear outside the opening. Yuki because she's far more than she seems to be at first and because of the little changes.

And for the last spot Tsuruya and Kyon's adorable sister, the underdogs. Tsuruya because she's genki, I think the reasons were already stated before - long green hair, overgrown tooth, her shining expression, and enjoys Mikuru being tormented by Haruhi just as much as the viewer. :)
Kyon's sister, mhm, because she's his sister and kawaii, yep, just as simple. =P

Haruhi, Mikuru and Kyon, though it wasn't all that easy to leave Yuki out (I decided to go not more than 3).

Haruhi - maybe the most unpredictable yet funny yet innovative character seen in ages. May be not the cup of tea for all, but she's definitely a winner.

Mikuru - for the moeness factor, for a voice capable of melting you down and because I believe it's impossible not to fall in love with her cuteness and kindness.

Kyon - for being one of the best male lead that I can acknowledge as for now (4 episodes of the anime). Smart and honest. Probably just with such a strong personality he's able to not be overwhelmed by the "Haruhicane" with the yellow ribbons.

Haruhi and Kyon complements each other. So my vote goes to both of them. Personally, I like Kyon more because he so much relates to funny side of me. Also, Haruhi resembles my sister(to me).

One thing I want to add is that I do agree with IchiKyo that all the characters are really important, with their own interesting personalities and all. They are a big part that makes Suzumiya Haruhi tick. Honestly, I haven't seen such a bunch of characters since H&C.

I watched a documentary on wednesday on aliens, this episode was on conspiracies. When it comes to alien conspiracies, naturally the illuminati will be mentioned. For those who don't what are the illuminati, they are said to be a family of human alien cross breeds who look like lizards and are said to be manipulating the world politics. In the show, a illuminati theorists came up with a cover up theory on why we can't see them - they are from another dimension, we can't see them but they exist in a different 'dimensional frequency', in another words we know them as 'sliders'.

I don't think the illuminati every existed, but I'm starting to believe that haruhi's influence extends beyond dimensions(from the anime dimension/universe to ours). And yes she should run for the (world)President, nobody minds if she rules the world lol, at least we Haruhists won't mind

I voted for yuki because shes the funniest character to me, everytime she speaks it just makes me laugh. Everytime she speaks, it reminds me of episode 0, she was too funny.

On the last episode, during the credits, Haruhi and Kyon's name's are now in LARGE letters and they are the only ones shown on the screen, the rest of the SOS-dan members are now shown separate - This means Haruhi and Kyon come first alone and ilosed.

All the moderators have added a tin-foiled hat to they're avatars; as to protect themselves from any Haruhi-ism influence; even Catgirls has a signature with a Cat using a tin-foiled hat saying "Suzumiya Haruhi"

So.., what best way to make this all interesting for everyone ? Make the polls change to 100% on Haruhi and Kyon to be as they both winning; just like Super Director Suzumiya Haruhi does in her episodes :)

All and all this is a Very funny joke, we have to hand it to our mods here for pulling it off;
AS forums realy kick all the rest because of stuff like this :D

Anyway.., there is no way that my dear Asakura will ever surpass them both :p

Supposely, Haruhi "willed" the mods into adding a huge number for kyon and herself to prove supremacy :D (It didn't matter since the result before the mod was already Haruhi first and Kyon second.) Click on the numbers and you can count the number of ppl who voted. Haruhi remains supreme!

I think I know what the problem was. AS forums are run over multiple servers and last night one of the server enclosures had it's scheduled routine maintenance. To perform this, the cabinet (which houses the server) had to have the covers removed, and of course this meant the system didn't have the protective RFI shielding (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio_frequency_interference) for a while. This would give the same results as not wearing a protective Suzumiya Haruhi tin-foil hat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tin-foil_hat) (see also doku-denpa (http://forums.animesuki.com/showpost.php?p=501527&postcount=22), a similar but not identical phenomenon).

Thanks to Alu for noticing the common factor which allowed me to track down the problem.

What I'm extremely surprised is that Mikuru has tied with Yuki. I thought Yuki would be the more popular cahracter, since 1) she should appeal to rori-cons moreso than Mikuru and 2) she should also appeal to Rei-lovers. I guess eps 5 helped much. XDIts actually quite commendable that Yuki is on par with Mikuru with the little that has been shown of her so far (which is but a fraction if you consider the total development she gets). It bodes well for the next poll because she probably gets the most development of all the characters. :D Mikuru by contrast doesn't really go much further than her current portrayal.

Well I think the reason behind itsuki and sis's votes is kyon.

Most likely if you like kyon, you'll dislike itsuki as he does, but you'll like the mysterious air surrounding kyon and his sister. Plus, most guys would prefer a cute loli over a cool dude.

Never before have I had such a vicarious experience when listening to a narrator than when I saw the first episode of this show...I actually make the exact same kind of comments as Kyon's whenever I film a video project for school. I relate to Kyon, because I'm as cynical, sarcastic, and borderline-vapid as he is: and yet, I'd like to believe that I'm just as lovable. Not that I am, really...

As for Nagato, well...at first, her enigmatic quality seemed a bit too overdone, but now that I've read the translation of the first novel, I can safely say that her gradual steps towards becoming a more "human" character are worth the wait. Watching Yuki's personification process is almost as gratifying as watching in amazement as my PC miraculously sprouts thick arms and begins choking me violently--wait, what?

Sometimes they'll do these polls several times just to see how attitudes change before, during, and after the series....

once we see more of Asakura and watch Yuki emerge, votes may vary. :)

My problem is I felt sort of obligated to vote for Suzumiya (she kind of reminds me of my wife :) small, perky, and energetic --- usually on a mission). My vote for Mikuru rested entirely on that one noise she made when Suzumiya offered Kyon a chance to personally check out Mikuru in the second episode.
