View Full Version : Higurashi Q & A
This thread is for those with questions about the Higurashi no Naku Koroni anime, game and manga. Please keep discussion about episodes in the relevant threads, the purpose of this thread is to ask questions that can actually be answered as facts from the anime, game or manga.
Make sure you use spoiler tags if your question is about the game or manga (or any non-anime source). Untagged spoilers are risking a ban. If you don't know how to use a spoiler tag, please read this FAQ (http://forums.animesuki.com/misc.php?do=bbcode#spoiler).

Please read the Higurashi no Naku Koro ni wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Higurashi_no_Naku_Koro_ni) that has been made before you ask questions. I made the the wikipedia article as detailed as I can which may answer your questions beforehand.
Brief rundown of the arcs and chapters in sequential order for quick reference in the future:
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni ("Question" arc)
Onikakushi-hen
Watanagashi-hen
Tatarigoroshi-hen
Himatsubushi-hen
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai ("Answer" arc)
Meakashi-hen
Tsumihoroboshi-hen (the TV anime will go up to here)
Minagoroshi-hen
Matsuribayashi-hen
EDIT: Also, I'm going to try to keep this FAQ section as clean as possible, so I will be moving some irrelevant posts to the correct thread and what not from time to time.
EDIT2:
Please do not ask incessant questions regarding the availability of an English patch of the original doujin game version of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. Questions like these pop up everytime an anime based on a game comes along, and the answer is the same all over: little to no one in the English speaking world had an interest in this game before it aired, so there exists no such thing.
By the time it does get translated several months from now, there will be another game-based anime that will come along and people ask the same question again for that title. By that time, people would've already finished watching the other show and they'll lose interest. I can already forsee people saying the exact same question when Tsuyokiss or Yoake Mae Yori Ruri Iro Na starts airing. It's the same cycle over and over.
If you want to play the game, BUY it and play through it with a Japanese dictionary on hand. Besides, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni isn't that expensive like an ero-game or consumer game anyway. If you can spare 1500 yen (plus shipping) you can get the whole question arc (Onikakushi-hen~Himatsubushi-hen) in one disc. And if you can spare another 1000 yen (plus shipping), you can get the answer arc that is out right now (Meakashi-hen~Minagoroshi-hen) in one disc as well.

Question!
Is it possible that the show could "squish" all the answers into two answer arcs? The show will be ending after the 8th chapter of the game is released, after all, right? Has anything been said to this effect?

No one knows, and anime production is usually several weeks ahead of airing. So the anime could actually be 80% finished in production phase even before the 8th and final chapter goes on sale at this summer's Comike. Obviously, that wouldn't be possible unless Ryukishi07 spilled the beans to the anime staff - which is highly unlikely as the anime production process is tight on schedule to begin with.

Question number two, yarr.
Are there any known English translations of the Higurashi game floating around out there? Fan translations, official ones, etc?
Given the tremendous and uproar success Higurashi no Naku Koroni, the game, among the fan players in Japan has amassed, do the game's creator, Ryukishi07, would encourage themselves to come up with a sequel to the game in an unknown future?
I'm neither implying nor assuming that scenario could bound to happen.
I already read thoroughly the Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Higurashi_no_Naku_Koro_ni).
Also, I know that there's still one more game scenario to be released in Japan by August, and that the game will be ported to the PS2 consumer port.
My aforementioned question was just a hypothetically one.

I wouldn't know, and most likely not. Hey, there was practically no interest in this game in the English speaking world. Perhaps Chinese ones exist. I wouldn't know. My best bet is to buy the game at cdjapan or what not, and do your best with a Japanese dictionary at hand.

I remember from several posts that all these arcs are somewhat independent of each other, yet at the same time exists on at the same time. Is this game's storyline simulating the Butterfly Effect?

A question and an observation-cum-question:
1) If the show is "only" going to go to Tsumihoroboshi-hen, then we're not going to get the full answer, are we?
2) If we were to get the answer, wouldn't this be counterproductive, since it would spoil the game and conceivably affect sales? So, honestly speaking, can't we expect that the anime will peter out into uncertainty?

I know the last chapter has not been released yet, but is it conceivable for Minagoroshi-hen and Matsuribayashi-hen to contain enough material for a Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai show, even if that would only be ~13 eps? Does Minagoroshi-hen contain enough for, say 6 episodes?
I would hate for the show to just end at an unfulfilling ending instead of a "best" ending.

uh...no.

No you won't, but you will come as close as you get to getting the answer. By that time, you'll have everything you need to know about what was going on behind Onikakushi and Watanagashi.
2) If we were to get the answer, wouldn't this be counterproductive, since it would spoil the game and conceivably affect sales? So, honestly speaking, can't we expect that the anime will peter out into uncertainty?
Not really. The majority of people who are watching this over here are otakus who have played the game already. And people who haven't played the game, well, they are otakus too so it's pretty easy for them to go to the nearest Toranoana or doujin shops and grab a copy if it seems interesting. What about the rest? Well, normal people don't watch anime shows airing on an obscure UHF channel past midnight.

Perhaps. I can't give you info on something that it not official. But I can say this: you'll definitely love the ending for Tsumihoroboshi-hen. I'm not saying any more than that - doing so will ruin the shock value.

Out of curiosity, is Frederica Bernkastel a real person? I googled for the name and all I came upon were Japanese websites, which I assume are talking about Higurashi.
1) If the show is "only" going to go to Tsumihoroboshi-hen, then we're not going to get the full answer, are we?
The way I see it, Minagoroshi-hen is either a hit or miss: It does reveal the "full answer" of the entire story (as opposed to the "partial truths" in Meakashi and Tsumihoroboshi), but while some people would be left pleasently surprised by the plot twists and the ultimate truth, for others, Minagoroshi-hen could mean a proverbial kick in the nuts (and no, I'm not going elaborate on what that means, read the spoilers in the game thread if you really want to know).
In comparison, the story and ending of Tsumihorobosh-hen is a relatively safe one. In fact, as long as the anime leave out Tsumihoroboshi-hen's final TIP "悪魔の脚本" (The Demon's Script), which isn't obtainable until after Tsumihoroboshi-hen is over, then Tsumihoroboshi-hen's ending would actually make a very good series finale. (Of course, if they really end the anime with Tsumihoroboshi's ending as-is, then that's a problem too, since without Minagoroshi-hen's "full answers", there will be more holes left in the mystery than a sponge).
(To explain a little bit more, the final TIP (Demon's Script) of Tsumihoroboshi provided a way for the story to continue on. Without that TIP, the story of Higurashi no Naku Koroni probably would've ended with Tsumihoroboshi)
In the end, I don't think they'll try to change the story to make up an original ending or anything. Most likely, they'll just show the anime as it is, and if you want to find out the real truth (fill up the sponge holes), you'll just going to have to buy the game.
2) If we were to get the answer, wouldn't this be counterproductive, since it would spoil the game and conceivably affect sales? So, honestly speaking, can't we expect that the anime will peter out into uncertainty?
Like I mentioned above, I don't think the "real truth" will be revealed in the anime at all. By the end of Tsumihoroboshi, a lot of things will be cleared up, but it's still one step short of the "real truth".
Honestly, I don't know what they're going to do with the ending (so don't take what I said above too seriously). The only suggestion I can give is to just enjoy the story for what it is without thinking too much.

No, she's not. Frederica Bernkastel is kind of a mysterious existence within the story of Higurashi. The only time her name appears is at the beginning of every new chapter (in the game), when one of her poems is displayed. The poem themselves all elude to the truth natures behind each chapter. Quite an artistic touch.

Matsuribayashi isn't out yet, so I can't say anything about that.
Minagoroshi, on the other hand, probably does have enough contents to fill 6 episodes (then again, at 4 episodes, Onikakushi-hen was already pretty rushed, and it's one of the shortest chapters).
I'm not holding my breath for a second season based on only these last two chapters, but hey, you never know.

I'll assume the poems and her name are displayed in English in the game as KJ posted them. Thanks for the info.

Her name is written in English(?) as "Frederica Bernkastel", but the poem themselves are in Japanese.
Here's a page that has all her(?) poems organized:
http://lab.vis.ne.jp/higurashi/poem.html
Then again, kj must be doing a good job if his translations fooled you into thinking that the poems were in English to begin with. :heh:

Hi, I was surfing the net and came up with a small preview clip called Higurashi Motion Graphic vol.3 so after some research I found this web site:
Higurashi Motion Graphic (http://www.kawachi.zaq.ne.jp/dpenu801/higurashi/entrance.html)
(I don't even know its real name since it's in Japanese :heh: )
Anyway, I found in the download section 3 preview clips of what seems to be Higurashi no Naku Koroni but with radically different graphics. Could anyone please tell me what it's all about? These movies seem very nice and I wonder if they can be acquired?

Hoho, good job finding it. (・ω・ )

(what about the others, you ask? Well, only after the anime covers them first ;))
(Personally, Utage was my favorite, both the song and the video. Hey what do you know, Tatarigoroshi-hen was my favorite chapter too! :heh: Maybe you might see it sometime in the future. Maybe say, after the anime's Tatarigoroshi-hen ends? ;))
How do the chapters relate time-wise to the first?
I mean like, how does the second 'chapter' (epi 5-?) relate timewise from 1-4
And I didn't really understand it before (the way you guys stated it..butterfly effect?) but these are alternate universes right?
How do these relate to the game, if the game is a choice game- Is this only one of the many set paths, or in the game, do the paths all lead up to this with different hints and clues, etc.?

I'm pretty sure they're "What if" scenarios that take place in the same universe, but when one starts, the last one is erased from existance or something. I can't be sure tho yet, so meh...

Ok, I'm going to put this thing down once and for all.
Higurashi no Naku Koroni is a sound novel, there are no selection points within the story, no choices to be made by the player, no interactions whatsoever: you click, read, click, read, click, read, and continue until a chapter is over (well, actually, in the past 7 chapters, there has been a couple of selections, but they were all gimmicks, they don't mean or do anything).
The game is split into 8 chapters (scenarios, if you would), the first half (1 - 4) consists of what we call the "question" chapters (Onikakushi-hen, Watanagashi-hen, Tatarigoroshi-hen, Himatsubushi-hen), while the second half (5 - 8) are considered to be the "answer" chapters (Meakashi-hen, Tsumihoroboshi-hen, Minagoroshi-hen, and the yet-to-be-released Matsuribayashi-hen). Although we call them "chapters" in this forum, each scenario are completely stand-alone: they each contain their own stories, development, and ending, and are not related to any other chapters directly.
Now, as for the relationship between these parallel scenarios. Like I mentioned in another post, for the sake of defining it as something, you should consider the scenarios (chapters) to be different stories occuring in parallel worlds (although Minagoroshi-hen revealed that this isn't quite the case either).
The important thing here is to realize that all characters and settings remain exactly the same throughout all scenarios, the only things that are different between the scenarios are the circumstances and happenings. The primary function these parallel worlds is to provide a multi-faceted view for the reader (you) to analyze. For Keiichi and the others, the world within each scenario is their only world. But you, the reader, an outsider, can watch from the sidelines, blessed with the ability to make comparisons, deductions, and determinations based on information gathered from across all the worlds.
Timeline wise, it might not be exact, but yes, all the chapters take place at roughly around the same time period, early summer in Hinamizawa (although there are a few exceptions, but you will know them when they come).
The anime, then, is basically doing the same thing: showing one scenario, then moving on to the next after the current scenario ends, etc.

what kind of blade/knife does Rena 'use'? It looks a lot like a chibi uruk-hai sword.

It's a hatchet with a pointy tip protuding out sideways. Seriously, that is the best way to explain it as it doesn't exist in that size. Although, there are similar ones such as the Echizen hatchet (http://images.google.co.jp/images?q=%E8%B6%8A%E5%89%8D%E9%89%88&num=50&hl=ja&lr=&c2coff=1&rls=GGLD,GGLD:2003-45,GGLD:ja&sa=N&tab=wi) and the Haku hatchet (http://images.google.co.jp/images?q=%E6%B3%8A%E9%89%88&num=50&hl=ja&lr=&c2coff=1&rls=GGLD,GGLD:2003-45,GGLD:ja&sa=N&tab=wi), which are smaller and with a much rounded protuding tip. But, one guy went to the lengths of having it specially made just for the heck of it:

Hi, I'm glad I read the forums else I'll be watching the show in a totally DIFFERENT direction!!!
I have some doubts which I hope some kind soul will help to clarify cos I am really confused now.
Initally, I thought that the purpose of the different arcs was to explain what happened in the first arcs\ but it seems like the arcs actually portray different realities in a parallel world at the same time?
1) If so, how could some of the events which happened in the second arc explain some of the events in the first arc?
For eg. some people said that the reason that Mion knew K1 was talking Oishi (in the first arc) was because she actually disguised as Shion and happened to be in the same restaurant that K1 and Oishi went to for lunch. (second arc)
-> But if the second arc does not happen in the same world as the first arc, how could the above arguement be held true?
2) Also what is the role of us viewers when we view thru the different arcs. Eg. intially I thought that the different arcs happen in the same world and we are supposed to piece the story of different timeframe to get the full story (similar to boogiepop phantom anime), but if the different arc portarys different reality, how should we go about watching it?
I know this questions are really fundamental but I do hope someone could give me a clearer explanation so that I am able to view this anime in the right direction =)
This anime rockS! Thanks! :)

In a way, yes
1) If so, how could some of the events which happened in the second arc explain some of the events in the first arc?

From my understanding of what's going on, the events that lead up to the start of each arc are the same. Then outside circumstances unique to each situation causes the stories to become different to each other. This leads to more clues provided in each situation to help figure out what's going on.
I would just approach it as a mystery, except instead of the story providing the sleuth, we are the sleuths. And until the ending is provided for us, we're put in the situation to figure out what's going on based on the events given to us. Just remember, like all detectives, we have to figure out what's true from what's not true. That's the fun part.
I know this questions are really fundamental but I do hope someone could give me a clearer explanation so that I am able to view this anime in the right direction =)

First of all, read my post here if you haven't already:
http://forums.animesuki.com/showpost.php?p=555620&postcount=33
I'm going to be careful in answering this one:
1) The reason why I didn't just call these scenario outright "parallel universes" is because of this. When people think of "parallel universes", they tend to imagine worlds that are completely different from each other. This is not the case for Higurashi. Like I mentioned in the post linked above, "the characters and settings remain exactly the same thoughout all the scenarios". In other words, the "world" itself remains the same. The difference are the events that occured within each world.
However, just because an event wasn't shown in a scenario doesn't mean it didn't happen. For example, in Onikakushi, a mystery would be "how did Mion find out about the conversation between Keiichi and Oishi?":
"Keiichi+Oishi conversation" → ? → "Mion finds out"
Now, we learned the fact that "Shion/Mion worked in Angel Mort" in Watanagashi-hen. With that, we can "equip" that knowledge onto Onikakushi-hen and finally fill in the missing blanks:
"Keiichi+Oishi conversation" → "Shion worked in Angel Mort" → "Shion told Mion about it" → "Mion finds out"
or (depending on your theory)
"Keiichi+Oishi conversation" → "Mion worked in Angel Mort" → "Mion finds out"
Even though the conversation that took place between Oishi and Keiichi in Angel Mort happened in Onikakushi-hen, concrete "facts" (not events) can be applied throughout all scenarios.
The world is the same, but the developments are different. The cause for this deviance is based on a pretty simple principle. So far I have avoided the usage of that critical word, but hopefully you guys will notice it yourselves.
2) See the points raised in my post here:
http://forums.animesuki.com/showpost.php?p=547152&postcount=173
Like I said above, these scenarios are independent, but they are all related. The purpose for these different scenarios is to give you a view of the "overall story" from multiple different angles (multi-faceted view, like I mentioned in the other post). With only one "view" (scenario), you can only see one side of an object (world), but with multiple views from different angles, you can then try to build a 3D image of the object in your mind. The object (world) itself remains constant, but your recognition of it will change over time as you learn more about it.

Do Keiichi's parents and Chie-sensei (I think that's her name?) serve any real important purpose to the plot, or should we not be paying much attention to them? They don't seem to be getting much screentime, leading me to believe that they don't have much of an impact on the storyline, but for some reason I still find them suspicious.

I have a what I thought was a simple, very quick question, but I've realised it's a little more complex. :/ I don't think it's been answered anywhere.
It's about the TIPS, and how far they can be trusted. First of all, I'm assuming that the information in them can be taken as it's presented; there's nothing twisted by a character's point of view/mental state, like there was in Onikakushi-hen. Is that correct?
Secondly, I'm also assuming that in the ones that are conservations between characters, what the characters say could be lies or misinformation. I'm unsure as to whether the TIPS are supposed to provide concrete facts or whether they're just like everything else, and open to interpretation.
Sorry if it's a stupid question, but I'm feeling a little confused. x_x;

The TIPs provide "factual information" in the sense that they show what actually took place. For example, if a TIP contained information about what a character is thinking, then you can be sure that the thought process did take place. However, the contents of his/her thought would naturally be subjected to the person's state of mind. As for conversations, the above rule still applies. A person may lie if he/she chooses to.
With that said, the TIPs are there to help you solve the mystery behind everything (if that's even possible) and not to mislead the readers.

With that said, the TIPs are there to help you solve the mystery behind everything (if that's even possible) and not to mislead the readers.
Let me clarify about the TIPS:
What's written in the TIPS are evidences, fact, clues, and hints.
If the coroner's report says it's a woman, it is a woman Although you don't see the report, what good will Oishi and his partner have in lying at that scene about the coroner's report being a woman? They are talking to their fellow police officers - they can check them out if they want to; and that's what Oishi and Kuma tells them to do. That's how you connect the dots for the TIPS.
If the newspaper report says that so-and-so occurred, it occurred. If a character thought that way, that's what he/she thought (psychological state of mind aside). If you see an episode where Rika refers to a call that Satoko made when she was young, there's a record of it that you can read. It's interesting. And, that actual record is factual evidence.
How you use the TIPS is another matter. Scrapbooks for instance - it's written down, but it's mainly a theory. How far can you trust that source?
It's just a matter of sorting through the evidence just like an investigator - what is reliable and what maybe questionable. If it's between a coroner's medical autopsy report versus some person's theory written in a scrapbook....which one do you trust? How much can you trust? Then again, if you negate the coroner's report becaus he might be "in on it," what do you trust? On the other hand, what are the chances of the coroner misidentifying a corpse as a woman than a man? The body is rather intact, it's not charred up like Takano's corpse from the previous arcs. So, what do you think?
Are the TIPS misleading? Perhaps. But these are presented to you directly. Even if they some might seem to take you off-track, you then have to think - what was the purpose of that TIPS to make you go off track? That's where more thinking kicks in.
So, write down to yourself notes on which TIPS give you reliable facts, versus some that are highly questionable. You are your own detective - see if you can best Oishi or even Rena!

Thanks for that, both of you. :) It helped a lot... especially since kj1980 seems to have read my mind by using the coroner's report as an example. Sadly I don't think I'm going to be besting Rena or Ooishi any time soon, but this will definitely help my attempt.
Watch the latest CM for the DVD release. Apparently the 1st pressing DVD will have the TIPS as part of the package. Anyone can clarify this?

Yep, it's confirmed by the official website and CDJapan. I made a post about it here (http://forums.animesuki.com/showpost.php?p=577371&postcount=18) with a link to the site.
2. Mekashi-hen is going to have only 2 episodes? Only 2 are listed on wikipedia and anidb.
Only two episode titles have been confirmed for Meakashi, that's why :) I doubt that, as an answer chapter, it'll be that short - you'll be able to work out how many episodes it has when an episode title for Tsumihoroboshi shows up. Himatsubushi, on the other hand, is only 2.
What was the inspiration for Higurashi no Naku Koroni?
Explaining, if the idea of placing the plot in a rural village came from the experiences that one or many members of Ryukishi07 had in their childhood growing up in similar villages in the Japanese countryside.

I'm guessing quite a bit of Twin Peaks, infused with local folklore and traditions of rural villages. :heh:
(Looks like kj tossed my post into the game thread for the game-related contents ^^; , so I'll cut and paste this part back here)

I believe it was a time when he was into mini theatrical plays, and out of interest, he wrote some play scripts. Among them was a script called "Hinamizawa Bus Stop", which is a story that took place entirely at a bus stop. Coincidentally, Yatazakura-san (the programmer, Ryukishi07-san's brother) began studying Nscripter as well at this time, so the idea to clean up the "Hinamizawa Bus Stop" script and rewrite it in a novel style came up...
The script itself can be said to be Higurashi's essence: all the most important plot devices came from this play script. But it took a lot of planning and organizing for the story to become what we see in the games today.

i understand that the arcs are the same world but with differant happenings to give you answers so that you can solve the mystery.
But is the first arc something like a main-arc? And you have to see the other ones to fill the holes of this „main-arc“ ? because i think there have to be at least some kind of main story...

Take the 4th chapter as you will - is the answer.
[edit]
Maybe I shouldn't be as cryptic.
It may or may not. Just like the other chapters, this is one possiblity in the world of Higurashi.
is the Fourth Chapter to be considered a prequel common to all 3 previous chapters, like if the events on the fourth chapter can be considered to have taken place on the past of the world despicted on each of the first 3 chapters?
Think about the talks between Keiichi and Takano/Tomitake about the serial murder events, and Mion's talk about the dam war, etc. in the previous chapters. The important thing is for you to notice the similarities between the chapters: what remained constant throughout all of them?
Still, I guess there's no need to think too much about Himatsubushi-hen, since there won't be a Minagoroshi-hen anyway.
Hmm, i was just wondering..
Do you ever get to see the Akasaka's character design in the game at all? The main reason i ask is because in the fan book i've got, you don't see him.. its just a black shade around his character.

Yes, he finally gets standing portraits in Minagoroshi-hen (pointlessly :heh: ). You can see him if you check the latest popularity vote (http://naderika.com/Cgi/vote/votecom4/ke4/ke4.htm), down at 9th place.

In the game inbetween every other cut-scene appears the TIPs.
These TIPs are information (support, or unsupported) that give you insight of certain elements in the story.
Many times they are written through a different person pt of view other than the main characters. They are there to help you solve the mystyery. It's up to you however to decided which TIPs are worth it's value.

what is this poll exactly? and why is Rena all the way down at 5?? I expected her to be 1 or 2... is she unpopular?
anyhow, i had an actual question:
do the character designs vary much from the games to the manga to the anime?
or did they make it a point of keeping the designs constant?
(i guess i'm thinking in terms of other game to anime series where the characters looked quite different)
ALSO, more importantly:
Can someone post the titles of all the chapters with the RED part of the word displayed?... as in the series title "Higurashi no Naku Koro ni" or the chapter title "Tatarigoroshi-hen"
They do put a part of each chapter title in red, too... right? i'm not just making that up, am i?
is this relevant?
I know I read this somewhere.. or maybe it was pointed out in the fansubs at some point in time.. but what are the flowers that are falling in the intro? I know they exists but I just can't think of their name...
Any input would be GREAT!

I wonder, what would be a good source to buy these outside of Japan (e.g. in the US)? Would anyone care to provide links?
I can't find any on cdjapan or amazon.co.jp, or perhaps I am not looking in the right place.
Also, do these require Japanese Windows?
Himeyashop.com has lots of Dojin stuff, inclusive Higurashi, however their shipping prices are enourmous, so unless you're doing a bigger order its usually not completely worthwhile. Also: I've heard a horror story about one of their shipments but that may just be a one time thing and the mail's fault.
As for your question concerning japanese windows:
Depends entirely on your version of windows. With XP, 2000, NT and ME you can download language packs directly from windows update that inlude japanese text support. Then just set your system language to japanese before you start playing and all the text would show up fine.
Otherwise the game will run but you wont be ablr to see any text... kind of pointless to play higurashi without text tho..
I keep wanting to order but my japanese is essentially nonexistant.. so looking up every single word would be quite problematic. I would love to see the translation project go ahead, if they do it like the touhou translations and require ownership of the original, but provide a patch thatll work with that ^^
what is this poll exactly? and why is Rena all the way down at 5?? I expected her to be 1 or 2... is she unpopular?
It's just as I said, a popularity vote: official/non-official votes that take place for a certain periods of time that allow people to vote for their favorite characters over the internet.
That particular vote was the 4th official Higurashi popularity vote held on the game's official site (07th Storming Party), and took place between March 28th - April 8th 2006.
Rena used to be on top, back during the 1st popularity vote. But by the time Tatarigoroshi-hen came out, the spotlight has shifted to Mion, Keiichi and Satoko. By the time Meakashi and Tsumihoroboshi-hen came out, Keiichi and Mion was pushed up to become the top two (to be fair, since Tsumihoroboshi-hen is Rena's story, she did manage to climb up from 4th in the 2nd pop. vote to 3rd in the 3rd pop. vote). In Minagoroshi-hen, everyone pretty much got an important role (especially Keiichi). In comparison, Rena sort of fell back to being a support character again, and so it was reflected in the 4th popularity vote.
anyhow, i had an actual question:
do the character designs vary much from the games to the manga to the anime?
or did they make it a point of keeping the designs constant?
(i guess i'm thinking in terms of other game to anime series where the characters looked quite different)
The design itself didn't change, but the art style is greatly different between the 3 media. Those character portraits you see in the popularity vote page are the official character arts used in the game.

No, the chapter titles do not have reds in them.

Some say they are pomegranates flowers, but it's not certain. I think the important thing is that they're falling. Falling flowers usually represent death (as is candle fires dying out).

Himeya (http://www.himeyashop.com/) has them. They may be a little expensive compared to others, but I haven't had any problems with them.
Palet Mail (http://www.paletweb.com/) has them for cheaper, but their order process is a little more complicated.
You don't need the JP version of windows, but you do need to have Japanese language support (downloadable from microsoft's site). You may also need to set your system language/region settings to Japanese.

Kai (解, solve/answer) is the general name used to refer to the answer chapters of the game.
The "question" chapters (Higurashi no Naku Koroni) are:
- Onikakushi-hen
- Watanagashi-hen
- Tatarigoroshi-hen
- Himatsubushi-hen
The "answer" chapters (Higurashi no Naku Koroni Kai) are:
- Meakashi-hen
- Tsumihoroboshi-hen
- Minagoroshi-hen
- Matsuribayashi-hen
Refer to kj's post here for the game's past releases and packagings:
http://forums.animesuki.com/showpost.php?p=411693&postcount=7
Remember, the latest disk for each arc will always contain the latest chapter PLUS all previous chapters in the arc. The paletweb link you gave was for the Himatsubushi-hen disk, which contains all 4 question arc chapters.
The current latest "answer" chapter is Minagoroshi-hen (released on 12/30/05), which contains itself + Meakashi and Tsumihoroboshi-hen. The next and final chapter will be released at Comiket70 on August 13th. It will contain Matsuribayashi-hen, the concluding chapter of the game, as well as all the previous answer chapters.
I hope that's clear enough.
I knew that each new chapter had the previous ones, but the names of the disc just confused me. Thanks
Thanks for the info on the flowers Sushi-Y~! ^_^
No, the chapter titles do not have reds in them.

ah, well... all the Higurashi Chapter Titles follow this pattern:
(Kanji 1)(Kanji 2)(shi / し)
1) 鬼隠し Onikakushi
2) 綿流し Watanagashi
3) 祟殺し Tatarigoroshi
4) 暇潰し Himatsubushi
5) 目明し Meakashi
6) 罪滅し Tsumihoroboshi
7) 皆殺し Minagoroshi
8) 祭囃し Matsuribayashi
*) 鬼曝し Onisarashi (Kinda like a Tatarigoroshi followup)
*) 猫騙し Nekodamashi (I heard it's focused on the comedy - haven't read it)
*) 宵越し Yoigoshi (Takes place in present day Hinamizawa to replace Minagoroshi hen for its manga counter-part)
The first 8 are the Sound Novel Series. The * ones are extra chapters found in Manga format. Only the first 6 will be animated. So far the anime has always made the second kanji in red. Does it have any significance? Probably not as the Sound Novel does not follow this pattern. I also do not know what importance the red な in ひぐらしのなく頃に besides Ryukishi 07 stressing it is an integral part of the title.
This series is making me want to buy the question and answer chapters just incase I ever learn japanese or a translation patch is released. This game might be the reason I learn japanese... Though I'll definatly be spoiled for the last two chapters by the time I get to play them.
*) 宵越し Yoigoshi (Takes place in present day Hinamizawa to replace Minagoroshi hen for its manga counter-part)
It doesn't *replace* Minagoroshi-hen per se. It's simply another "side story" like Onisarashi-hen. A Minagoroshi-hen manga will probably come after Meakashi and Tsumihoroboshi-hen manga serialization ends.
*) 猫騙し Nekodamashi (I heard it's focused on the comedy - haven't read it)
* ones are extra chapters found in Manga format.
x 猫騙し Nekodamashi
o 猫殺し Nekogoroshi
http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/4817/nekogaidenuh8.th.png (http://img206.imageshack.us/my.php?image=nekogaidenuh8.png)
Nekogoroshi isn't really a manga, but a short story with illustrations. Half of it is indeed light-hearted comedy, but the second half features some serious contents too.

ah, no wonder I couldn't find it. I remember reading something about its comedy before, and I remember the Neko in the title so I thought it'll have a cuter name. :heh:
Isn't there another novel too? Taking place at another high shcool in Shishibone years before the wonderful events in Hinamizawa?
I managed to get my copy of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni & Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai for ~$35 including EMS shipping from Paletweb. Great deal.
It definitely was, unfortunately it does not appear available now. Are there any shipping or some other coupons?
It appears that the prices are quite a bit higher than Japanese prices, plus of course there will be a shipping charge (which I couldn't find, do they at least combine shipping?)
I guess at this point it makes sense to at least wait until August 13 when Matsuribayashi is released...

Ah, the anime is still currently (EP 18) on Meakashi (chapter 5), and probably will be for another two episodes. Even if it was on Chapter 6 Tsumihoroboshi, ch6 has more than enough material to go 9 EPs. Personally, I rather it did (but most likely it'll be only six episodes). Tsumihoroboshi is a roller coaster from start from finish.

What comes with the first DVD. I know the Tips and 5 (?) cards come with it, but what about everything else? What about the extra disc?
Also, besides the obvious, what's the difference between the rental and retail editions of the DVD (besides the rental version looking all cool and such)? Are there still extras on the dvd itself in both editions? Or does the rental just have the episodes?

Lessee, referring to here (http://oyashirosama.com/web/item/index.htm#dvd):
1. 5 cards - a very happy Rika, a happy Satoko, a sunset Mion, an ominous Rena, and one of the DVD cover.
2. The TIPs. Apparently these'll be 'published in the back of the jacket'.
3. An artbook of sorts which appears to contain character sketches and the like.
4. "Hinamizawa Inquiry" mini soundtrack CD. No idea what that's supposed to mean.
5. The DVD. Obviously.
6. Proof of purchase... thing. Collect these and send them off to prove you've bought all the volumes and get something nice - storage for something, I think it's all the cards. I'd have preferred a DVD box but oh well.

The rental DVD will presumably just have the episodes, can't see why it'd have anything else. The site doesn't appear to say anything either way.

Like it says on the wiki, they won't animate either of them. The anime will stop at Tsumihoroboshi, and that does mean that people only watching the anime won't get all the answers. That much isn't really a problem to those animating it, as the Japanese audience can easily go and pick up the remaining sound novels. As for Matsuribayashi, that won't be out for a few more days, and when planning for the anime started Minagoroshi wasn't out either.
That's not entirely a bad thing though, can you imagine how much they'd have to squash everything up to fit Minagoroshi in? Not worth thinking about :heh:

Because that's the order they were presented in the game? ^^;
Just because the story is split into "question" and "answer" scenarios doesn't mean the answer chapters have to solve the mysteries of the question chapters in any particular order.
Here's a tip, don't try to think of the answer chapters as "the answer" to the question chapters. For example, don't think of Meakashi-hen as "the answer chapter of Watanagashi-hen", even though it's not necessarily wrong. Meakashi-hen is it's own chapter, it just happens to answer the mysteries in Watanagashi-hen, that's all.

Both things might have happened
They just didn't show both events in both arcs (watanagashi and meakashi)
In meakashi they do not show how Shion and Keiichi met. Shion just says
"... And then I met Keiichi, he mistook me for Mion..." (whatever... something like this)
I think we can assume Shion saving Keiichi also happened in meakashi... (and Keiichi saving "Mion" as well)

Think about it more. Did Keiichi and Shion really meet for the first time the same way in both chapters? How did they meet for the first time in Watanagashi-hen? Meakashi-hen? How likely is it for the same event (getting in trouble with delinquents for bumping into their bikes) to happen twice?
In the overall scheme of things, it probably doesn't really matter how they met, but it's still an important clue that hints you to the relationship between the two chapters.
Why is the "na" in Higurashi no Naku Koro ni in red?

Hmm
Watanagashi ==> Angel Mort
Meakashi ==> Punks trouble
Well,
I just thought that Keiichi saving Shion (thinking it was Mion) could also have happened in Watanagashi-hen, but it wasn't shown.
It's because the story looks like the same as Watanagashi-hen, from the point of view of Shion. Or maybe we have some Twin Peaks going on here hehe :D

Multiple universes?
Multiple possibilities?
It's like a roll of the dice by the universe - every few episodes is like a
different facet on the same stone. Similar but different.
Thinking about the fact that the last two are not to be animated - maybe

Why is the "na" in Higurashi no Naku Koro ni in red?
I would also like to know what that means. I guess it must have different meanings if you take it out.

"Mi~" is another of the many onomatopoeia for noises a cat would make.
I've decided to take the plunge and watch Higurashi...
Somehow, I believe that this series will be like Narutaru all over again... Start out innocent but then suddenly become dark and sadistic.

Just a simple question: the PS2 port of the game won't have Matsuribayashi-hen arc, but it will have 3 original arcs, this means that the PS2 port will have another ending, or it will have the same ending of the PC game? Or nothing has been mentioned?
Whats the Type-S mentionated in the TIPs?

Re-read TIPS #51 (http://forums.animesuki.com/showpost.php?p=580005&postcount=51)
Those who have read more of the manga than which has been translated (if any), any chance you can post what some of the better penalty games are that wernt in the anime? (excluding ones already translated)
How old is Rena?1. Very first TIPS from in-game says her birthday is somewhere in July, and main story takes places in June.
2. Game doesn't explicitly say whether they're in junior high school or high school, but a manga adaption actually says it's junior high school.
3. Mion is school senior and who's gonna take entrance exam, and is in same age with Keiichi for couple of monthes before her birthday comes.
Adding up these evidence, we can safely assume that Keiichi is 14, Rena is 13 and Mion/Sion is 14.
Satoko, on the other hand... there are so few hint that it's not enough.
A TIPS in Tatarigoroshi says she was * years old(one digit, not two) at 1981 November.
- That means she should be no older than 11 at 1983 June and if she's 11, she'd probably be in fifth, or sixth grade of elementary school.
Rika... no hint at all, except; She was already in elementary school at 1978; no younger than fifth grade.
- I'd like to think she and Satoko are in same grade, then she'd be either 10, 11 or 12... but I really have no clue.
I've been wondering in the anime that after the ending credits for each episode air, the preview follows and a voice narrates, what I interpret to be, a poem that describes the theme for the next episode before 'she' announces the title for the following episode.
Is that the voice of Rika? or perhaps that of Frederica Bernkastel?

I would assume it's the anime's attempt at Frederica Bernkastel.
The Voice Actor, however, is the same as ______ :p hint:フルデリカ

This was answered at the beginning of Tsumihoroboshi.
Rena goes overboard purposely to forget her family situation.
It's her escape.
Is there enough information in the anime to figure out the central culprit of Higurashi, his/her motives, allies, and procedure?
With only the anime? Probably not. Even if you played through the original game (Onikakushi ~ Tsumihoroboshi) in its entirety with all the details and TIPs and everything, it'll still take a genius (or psychic) to be able to figure out all those things you stated.
Then again, finding the true culprit isn't really the goal of the story anyway. Rather, it's only one of the necessary things that we needed to know in order to achieve the true goal.
The true goal? It's all about Rika and her fate.

Okay this has been confusing me for a while now. I think I know it, but just to clarify. Which Sonozaki sister was in the Angel Mort the first time Keiichi went there, Shion (meaning the one we know as Shion who likes Satoshi and not the "real" Shion or whatever that whole business is) or Mion (meaning the one we know as Mion, etc etc)? It was Mion, right?
And the one that gave Keiichi the boxed lunch was also Mion, correct?
Sorry if this was confusing :heh:

Sorry if this was confusing :heh:
Prior to the deaths of Watanagashi, Shion never assumed the identity of Mion aside Keiichi mistaking Shion for Mion when walking her out and bumping later into Mion. Here Shion never said she was Mion, and was just having fun with Keiichi knowing he hasn't figured it out.
Mion, on the other hand, assumed the idenity of Shion while giving him that lunch box because she was too embarassed to give it to him as herself.
Otherwise, the only other switch took place at the fateful night of Watanagashi which thereafter the murder spree took place, and then the final switch when "Shion" was rescued.
Hanyu and Hanyuu. I've seen it spelled both ways. If "Hanyu" is the correct way then why do so many people use Hanyuu?

Hanyuu is really the correct way to spell it via Romaji.
Same way that Ooishi is the correct way to spell Oishi via Romaji.
It's just for readability and an accepted way of writing when two identical vowels are line together like that.
Personally, I like writing Oishi and Hanyuu :p

But that only applies to Watanagashi-hen and Meakashi-hen. right? It seems like in episode 11 (Tatarigoroshi-hen) there was a moment when Shion answered a phone call from K1 as Mion. She knew details about Satoshi that only Shion should know.
bleh, K1 is right. Just being able to tell those two apart would be nice.

I don't know if here is the right place to ask this, I didn't want to post this on "Your Qs for Higurashi Answered" because there you are only supposed to post questions, so I tought that this would be a good place to post this. This post can be deleted if this is not in the right place.
Well, I just want to know if "Your Qs for Higurashi Answered" thread will spoil too much, I mean I plan on playing translated games so I don't want to get too spoiled.

I'm posting this here and not in the other thread because this one doesn't seem like it would fit in there. Anyway, I'm not sure if this has been answered or not, but I was rewatching Tatarigoroshi a while ago and I think someone said it was Shion on the phone when Keiichi called the Sonozaki house in episode 11, and how it was Shion who said he was acting like Satoshi. Now while it would make sense for her to play the part of "Mion" in that situation, when it showed her, she was dressed up as Mion too.
So my question is, do we know what Shion was doing as "Mion" at that time, since it wasn't the Watanagashi festival yet, if it even was Shion on the phone? Though if it wasn't, then the question would be how did Mion know about what Satoshi told Shion on the phone that day?
Something curious I spotted while rewatching Onikakushi-hen.
I noticed in the final animated arc that shortly before the pen/syringe debacle was explained the gang were playing a card game with a picture of a syringe on one of them. Someone chimed something to the extent of "the only thing left to figure out.." and I raised an eyebrow.
Now that I'm rewatching the series, I came across another curious possible allusion in episode two. They seemed to be playing something akin to Clue and they said "Rika did it with the poison in the medical office." Working on nothing but intuition, could this be foreshadowing her possible involvement in Dr. Irie's supposed suicides or is that too much of a stretch?
(Or maybe it's just referring to her administering the antidote, though the pairing of 'poison' and 'medical office' seem too suspicious)
So my question is, do we know what Shion was doing as "Mion" at that time, since it wasn't the Watanagashi festival yet, if it even was Shion on the phone? Though if it wasn't, then the question would be how did Mion know about what Satoshi told Shion on the phone that day?
My guess is that the person that answer keichii phone is Mion, as in how did Mion know about Satoshi's conversation with Shion.... well, Shion need to tell Mion about it so Mion will bring his sister to the festival right? (Even if it's Shion who brought Satoko to the festival, she still needs to explain to Mion the reason for switching right?)
Maybe Shion just happened to be over and Mion asked her to take some calls while she went to bed? As for dressing as Mion, if the scene suddenly showed someone dressed as Shion answering the phone it would be incredibly confusing to the audience who hadn't seen Meakashi-hen.
I don't think Shion would tell Mion something that would incriminate Satoshi. I mean, when the Sonozaki finally found out about Satoshi and Shion from the cops, they obviously weren't too happy.
Something curious after watching the whole anime:

Some questions:
1) According to Wikipedia, the "kana kana" with which Rena often ends her sentences is an onomatopoeia for the sounds that the cicadas make. But according to the anime, putting "kana kana" after a sentence is something like adding "Huh? Huh?" after a sentence. Which is right?
2) I've read that "Higurashi" means something like "turning dark", and is used to refer to certain cicadas that start making their noises when it starts turning dark. Is this a species or genus of cicada native to Japan, or is any cicada that makes noise at that particular time a higurashi?
3) What is the "distinction" that Mion, Shion and her grandmother keep talking about? Punishment? Why didn't Rika understand it's use in context? Also, wasn't the tattoo on Mion's back called a distinction?
4) Did Yukie (Mamoru Akasaka's wife) used to live in Hinamizawa? One of the TIPS seems to imply so (though I can't remember which one).
5) In the first seven "games", there isn't any game play, you just keep on clicking to go from one scene to the next (so I've read; I haven't played the game). But the final chapter, Matsuribayashi-hen, seems to have some sort of gameplay to it. There are fifty pieces which can be read somewhat out of order, but not entirely, since some pieces must be read before others in order to unlock the other pieces. Then, after having read all of them, you somehow have to "put the pieces together", like some sort of mental jig-saw puzzle (at least, that's how I interpret the prologue). What's the gameplay for fitting the pieces together?
6) This refers to TIPS titled Note of Grudges? (http://forums.animesuki.com/showpost.php?p=597453&postcount=63), and concerns spoilers for ep 12 (or maybe ep 13?)
In ep 12 or ep 13, Keiichi finds Satoko counting out loud; she'd in the low 5,000s, and says she's supposed to count until 10,000. According to the TIPS:
I was yelled for being too stinky.
I was yelled at for the food being too stinky.
He said that it stinks because I'm stinky.
He said that I stink because I don't take a bath.
He said that since I stink so much, I need to take a bath at least three times a day.
I was told that I have to stay in each of those baths for a long long time.
She was suffering a mild case of heat stroke from staying in the hot bath for a count of 5,000. If she stayed in for 10,000, she would have had a bad case of heat stroke, and if a previous step-father had punished her like this three times a day, she would have been hospitalized and the abuse discovered. So what am I missing?7) Someone had asked earlier about the ages of the main characters. From TIPS titled Keiichi's Past (http://forums.animesuki.com/showpost.php?p=681523&postcount=130) (spoilers for ep 25). A small quote (not much of a spoiler), from before Keiichi's family moved to Hinamizawa:
It was sort of a reactionory antipathy towards my parents who constantly bickered me to go to secondary school even when I have lost all interest in studying.
So, before moving, he was in 9th grade (since secondary school in Japan is 10th to 12th grades). The story arcs involving him take place in June. He moved to the village a month before, or in May. The Japanese school year starts in April. So, if the events described in "Keiichi's Past" took just one month (took place during April), and his family moved immediatly afterwards (at the beginning of May), then Keiichi is still in 9th grade. If the events took longer, and/or the family spent some time deciding where to move next, then he'd be in 10th grade.
EDIT:
8) Spoiler for ep 13:
At the end of ep 13, Hatoko pushes Keiichi off the bridge, yet the "rail" the wires formed would make this impossible, unless he somehow passed through the wires. I asumme that the anime messed things up. How did it happen in the game?

we would need Ryukishi07-san to answer this :heh:
there are a lots of possible reasons :

-like you said, some personnal onomatopia for "huh?" or "right right?"

Also, wasn't the tattoo on Mion's back called a distinction?the distinction is an act to prove to sonozaki family that you have redemeeded yourself, and you will not betray their trust anymore etc.

if you try to read an unavailable piece, the "game" will simply mark it as unavailable (the thumbnail of the piece will turn into a broken glass)
when a piece become available later, you will see a bright blue border around the broken glass.
you won't have anything to "put together", in fact, you are already putting them together, which permit you to read further pieces.

Is there enough information in the anime to figure out the central culprit of Higurashi, his/her motives, allies, and procedure?
There is enough information in the anime to figure out the central culprit and at least part of the procedure. There isn't enough information to determine motive.
The _first_ thought I had when I learned that Takano had supposedly been burned was that she wasn't really dead and the reason to burn the corpse was to obscure identification. Once Oishii told us that the corpse was dead well before Takano was seen alive, the obvious conclusion is that Takano is not the corpse and therefore Takano was Tomitake's killer. Once you keep track of her constantly shifting array of horror stories, all designed to exploit the psychological weaknesses of the immediate audience you can surmise that she is deliberately trying to turn people in the village against each other or possibly against the Sonozaki in particular.
The Memorial blogger for Higurashi by the end had concluded that Takano was the villain, and that she was spreading and exploiting a disease that makes people vulnerable to paranoia, and that she was doing it because she hated the village for some reason having to do with the village's ritually cannibalistic past. He did not clue into the men in grey being government agents, something I guessed at, but didn't connect up with Takano.

Oh my god, don't tell me people still think Oishi means Mr. Delicious. Whom ever propagated this equation in the first place should be drug out to the street and shot for their incomprehension of basic Japanese.
Oishi is written in kanji as 大石 (big stone), and it is a fairly common Japanese family name. There is no relation to Oishii (kanji written as 美味しい) which is different syllable wise and intonation wise.
Q: Why is Mion carrying a gun with her all the time, and why NO ONE has a problem with that? It's a toy gun. Guns are illegal in Japan, so they have some pretty realistic toys and models. This (http://www.rinkya.com/twview.pl?URL=http://page8.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/h47619961) one will look familiar if you've seen Black Lagoon. I bought a cheap grey model one in Japan that would get me in trouble if I took it out in public and started waving it around (I live in the USA).

it appears some people were taking it too seriously, and don't really pay attention to the possible "~ / ^ " stress mark on the o (or an addionnal o) , instead of the double i (but well... since most people don't really know / pay attention to the slight difference, they would most likely take theses words as homonyms for an even bigger confusion ).
and yeah...it is sad, but the intonation isn't really something you can notice if you actually "think" you are right XD

i would assume you didn't see how the game work, in fact, it's rather simple : you will see a photo as the background, and the text in front of it, with sometimes the character CG.
i didn't try tatraigoroshi yet, but the cg would or wouldn't show how the bridge is in the original story.
The background photos were taken from a real city, if the game shows the bridge, it will be something like this (of course blurred):

Isn't this the bridge?

Also, I didn't realise anyone seriously thought Oishi-san meant Mr. Delicious...

Isn't this the bridge?
yeah. that one.
another SS with more details
http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/3871/bridgene8.th.jpg (http://img444.imageshack.us/my.php?image=bridgene8.jpg)
as we can see, keiichi would hardly fall from this kind of bridge... except if satoko was really sqeezing him while pushing him :heh: (sounds like ryukishi didn't pay attention to the CG XD)
in conclusion : it is too bad that studio DEEN was faithful with the original story for this kind of detail (read : mistake), and not on others things XD
Also, I didn't realise anyone seriously thought Oishi-san meant Mr. Delicious...well, you could see this joke on several anime blogs, but since people aren't that good with sarcasm on the net, meh...
i guess some guys also deduce it was "delicious" with their... almighty "anime japanese" knowledge (pay attention to the emphasis) and listening comprehension XD (i won't deny it, i kinda rely on it sometimes, if i don't have the choice but... :heh:)
Well, Keiichi falling over the bridge is quite critical to the whole Tatarigoroshi theme. Actually, I'm suprised that they didn't show what happened after he was saved in the anime.
That aside, I have always wondered how Satoko could've pushed Keiichi down. Maybe she planted a springboard trap on the bridge :heh:
Ah, thanks for clearing that up for me!
So Oishi will be going up against Master Asia from Gundam and Yagami Light from Death Note on the 18th if anyone wants to vote for him. Stiff competition though T_T
(Also K1 will be duking it out with Bright Noa and Heinrich Lunge in round 2 on the 30th.)
Ok, so I want to understand this piece of work yet I do not want to watch it. I don't mind if someone spoils the ending for me (Please do), and can someone provide a website that has some in depth analysis and detailed explanation about the plot?
It sounds interesting and all however I hear it is extremely disturbing and I don't exactly like seeing finger nails being ripped off (Hammering a nail into someone's skull and limbs being torn off is alright), so I'd rather not watch it.

honestly, i'm not a "gore lover", and HNNKN has very few of this kind of scene, most of them suggered.
the only very "disturbing scene" is indeed the nail one, but you can skip it.
in general, the insanity isn't really something random, you will see some changes over the time, which will give you hints etc about what realy happened in HNNKN.
nevertherless, spoiling HNNKN is just a waste, because you are ruining like 40-50% of the impact of the story.

I was watching that nail scene with headphones, and my sister who was sitting about 5 metres away, asked me what all the screaming was about. :p
But seriously, Higurashi is great, even if you don't like gore, and you'll also ruin it if you spoil yourself.

If you don't want to watch it but want to know about the story, then how about reading it?

Good luck!
This blog has all the 26 episodes commented
after that you can read the TIPs and pieces here and voila:
You will be into the story.

For sometime now this has been bugging me, but it wasn't until recently that I've really gotten curious. Do Mion and Shion really love each other -that- way, or is the whole thing just done for fanservice? I mean, I know people joke about scenes and sometimes try and pull stuff out of their butts to support it, but I honestly didn't see anything. Not only did both girls have a guy they liked, but the only questionable scene I remember was when Shion is ontop of Mion...and what looked like a kiss there just turned out to be her laying her head against the other.
So could anyone please fill me in? Because up until now I've just been regarding most of the official pictures of them together as fanservice, but when that one regular edition DVD volume came out...kinda made me wonder.

the answer is simple : no, there isn't any incestuous/yuri relationship around the both of them.
The scene you are talking about was simply very emotionnal, since they were bursting their feelings about
Satoshi's disappearance, and the sonozaki's implication in this case, although Shion paid the price during the "nail" scene.
Shion snapped, grabbed mion, pushed her down and was about to strangle her, until she noticed mion's nails ripped off.
Shion just realized how foolish she was, and how her sister Mion was dedicated to her and utterly guilty, even putting her own sake into the stage, while she "seemed" to be on Oryou's side.
She calmed down, and hugged her, as a sign of forgiveness (in the both ways) and also to calm mion
the DVD cover and other "official" material are just fanservice, nothing more, nothing less.

OK This is really driving me nuts so I could use some help. I've seen people posting all over about this and saying it was proven in Tsumihoroboshi-hen, but I don't recall any evidence of-
The syringe from Onikakushi-hen actually being a marker?! I know there's a punishment game in which they draw on K1 with a marker, but when is it ever said that that was the syringe? And furthermore, what about Rika's syringe from Meakashi-hen?
Sorry if this has already been discussed but I've been flipping through threads and haven't found an answer, so if it is true and you guys are burnt out discussing it, could someone point me to the appropriate episode or TIPs?

In episode 25 there is a flashback of Keiichi, showing it
In the flashback the syringe turns into a marker
Rika's Syringe is too much spoiler...

like theacefrehley said, it was answered in ep25, when keiichi had his... "ephiphany" about what really happened in Onikakushi. (just after he told his past to the girls)
as for Rika's Syringue, you should read this TIPS (http://forums.animesuki.com/showpost.php?p=681486&postcount=129)
not really a spoiler, since it is supposed to be a part of tsumihoroboshi which the anime skipped. it should give you some clues.
but anyway, it is explained in Minagoroshi.
