ADDITIONAL RULES FOR Higurashi no Naku Koroni
Make sure you read the English wikipedia article for Higurashi no Naku Koroni (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Higurashi_no_Naku_Koro_ni) before you ask questions!!!

Feel free to share your theories and speculations. In fact, I encourage you to do so as this is what makes this series interesting.

I am designating Sushi-Y and Freakman to lead the discussion in the correct path without spoilers as they have played the game in advance. I put confidence in them that they will recognize a member has spilled the beans too far if any other members has begun to play the game.

SPOILERS FAR ADVANCED THAN THE CURRENT AIRED ANIME EPISODE WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. THIS INCLUDES THOSE IN SPOILER TAGS!!!. People tend to peek at spoiler tags; especially when they do not know such tag is meant for the episode, only to find it spilling the beans too far advanced in the game storyline.

The character design and the aspect of the backgrounds are really nice. I suppose Animation should be quite nice as well, as I have faith in Studio DEEN. Especially after their work with Fate/Stay Night.

@kj1980 - I wished I lived in Japan... I wouldn't even care about the region :p

One thing I wonder Kj : I know it's somewhat borderline and may sound weird but :
All of us foreigners download anime on Winny/Share/Torrent, yet you prefer waiting for anime to air at impossible hours so you can watch it on TV.
Do you refuse to commit to anything illegal as downloading anime ?

I'd rather show my respect to the staff by watching in front of the TV as it was meant to be. Besides, why go all through the trouble of downloading off of Winny three~four hours after its initial airing when you can watch it live?

Also, I usually don't stay up late to watch an anime show, unless it's something I really love. Most of the time, I record them onto my HD recorder and watch them in the morning or port it to my iPod to watch them on my way to work.

It's just that I feel guilty watching episode 1 on the other edge of the world before you even get to ;;

...It's just that I feel guilty watching episode 1 on the other edge of the world before you even get to ;; Good point. When I go on 2channel and see people complaining that they missed a broadcast and are desperate to see it, I feel guilty, too. But not guilty enough not to watch. The feeling of being so close to Japan is pretty great. Modern times. One world.

Actually, I was just thinking that I'd like to see the full 30 minutes, commercials and all. That would (a) bring me closer to the real thing, and (b) degrade the experience enough to encourage purchase of DVDs.

Only got the raw to hear Eiko's new song, so I'm holding off watching the whole episode... but I remember reading a worry that the first few episodes would make people think this was almost a harem show until the main story started...

...no worries then, considering the first minute, even before the OP, consists of a boy brutally pumelling two girls with a baseball bat accompanied by some of the squishiest blood sounds I've heard in a while

Looks like the rest of the episode's pretty happy until the end, but still... the OP song is plenty foreboding enough, too. 24th May's going on the calendar.

Yeah that's actually a pretty neat choice :)
Good way to get the viewers into the show.
About the first episode :
Feels good to see Hinamizawa and our Bukatsuin animated. Chidori Kaname (well her seiyuu) as Mion works great I think. Rena hmm... gotta see how she can handle the "Uso da !" scene (although the "Shiranai" was well done)

Yeah, that together with the opening is a good start and should keep the viewers interested since most people expect too much stuff happen in the first episode and forget other aspects which are important in the beginning (introducing the characters, some important bits and facts about the place/time everything happens, etc.) thus are easily bored if nothing out of the ordinary happens. But that wasn't quite the fact in the first episode. There were foreshadowing bits in the episode as well, so it's safe to say that people won't put that one off after the first episode with wrong impressions. :)

Anyway, the best first episode of this season so far. Opening is a winner (should I say as expected? ;) ). Ending was actually quite nice as well. The characters were enjoyable, nice voice-acting, the comedy bits were funny. Overall a good mix of everything. Hmm, yeah, not much to say aside from that, just that it didn't disappoint my expectations. :P

Edit:

Since I took a few screens earlier, here they are in case somebody's interested. Beware of spoiler. ;)

Hai, my comments.

First of all, they didn't choose to start with the Frederica Bernkastel's poem and Keiichi's train scene, and chose the _____ scene from Onikakushi instead. I suppose this is for the impact value, and it's well done.

The OP was rather unexpected for me, not that it didn't suit the anime, but it was more like a reminder of "what Higurashi no Naku Koroni was all about" for me. As a game player, I know everything in the story, but you can only feel the mood of the games when you play them. This OP, then, really helped me remember the game's (well, the serious parts anyway) mysterious, scary, and yet oddly beautiful atmosphere.

As for the contents, episode 1 ranks a "pretty good" in my book. The deformed faces and bodies seem to be slightly overused. I know this is to provide a contrast between the comedic and serious moments, but it kind of makes the distinction too obvious (that is, you can pretty much tell whether a character is joking around or not simply by looking at whether or not his or her face/body is "deformed").

Episode 1 ended quite nicely, I really loved Rena's calm looking face as she walked with that signature hatchet of hers.

Musics. Unfortunately, other than the higurashi (cicada) crying sound, I don't think any tracks from the game made it into this episode at all (well, technically, higurashi sounds are sfx, not music ^^; ). Particularly unfortunate for me is the lack of "Digital Network" and "Orange Iro no Shi". The anime itself lacked any memorable tracks, well, so far anyway.

All the drama CD voice actors made it to the anime, so no complaints there. ^^ *needs more Rika-chan*

I was pretty interested to hear Katakiri Rekka's ED theme song, although it's in English (well, the pronounciation wasn't perfect, but at least it was reasonably understandable). The song actually had a western pop feel to it, which isn't too bad. Nothing fancy in the ED animation, just some calm scenes, although I think that's a better choice than some hyper-energetic dancings, considering Higurashi's story.

Overall, 8/10. It was within my expectations, with a few disappointments, but also a few pleasant surprises as well.

Edit: I linked my favorite scene from this episode as an animated gif in my sig ^^; Rena + Cleaver Axe = Win

Wow, bringing the brutality at the very beginning is a great intro to an otherwise seemingly dull and "typical" moe~ anime that the first half is full of. Blood splatters and beatings aside, I wished that they added the SFX of bone crushing as well (I'm sadistic ww)

The OP was....actually really good. Shimamiya Eiko's vocals is dark yet eeriely soothing, a perfect fit for the title. And from the perspective of a person that has played the game, the OP sequences incorporated tidbits of what to expect here and there.

Shion and Mion sleeping together, with the other with the tattoo on her back, beautiful!! Shion breaking down, excellent!!

Aside from Rena's (well almost everyone's) big hairdo, her short skirt, and Mion's green necktie, I say it kept the game truthfully. From Keiichi's intro meeting up with Rena and Mion, going to the school, seeing a back shot of Ms. Chie (laughs)!

Keeping all the seiyuus from the drama CD intact was a good choice, although I still have a hard time getting the image of "ah~ Vanilla-san..." (Nomad from "Galaxy Angel") from the voice of Satoko, which is played by Kanai Mika.

Rika-chama's nipa~ made my day. tera moesu!!!

That great fish-eye perspective of Keiichi's facial expression totally brings out the premonitions of things to come. And ending it with Rena wielding the cleave-axe, nice build up.

The ED was also good, but unfortunately either my English skills has degraded or Rekka-san's English is undecipherable, I couldn't understand most of it.

First impression-wise: I'm very satisfied. Now it's just the hopes that Studio Deen can keep it up...

I think this will be more f*ked up than Narutaru.

Which is a good thing.

I really love the OP and ED, very dark and serious, as should befit this style of show. It's gonna blow away all the pseudo-dark but resultant cheesy recent shows (ala Jigoku Shoujo)

Well in the early chapters, the traps helped build the character of Satoko imho. So far, she seems somehow unbelievably quiet (did she ever hide behind Rika -like in the bento scene in ep1- in the game ? I can't remember)

Great first episode !

Looks like this show may be the dose of the supernatural that i need to get past my summer lol ... (along with Xholic hehe)

Hmm .. i was wondering ...

During the village tour / pinic outing ...

Was Mion (Green Hair Girl) carrying a gun (?) in her arm sling ?
Was that a stun gun , model gun or real gun ?

Talk about armed and dangerous ...
Swt ....

It very well might be a model gun, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was real as well, considering the fact that
her family is a prominent yakuza clan in that region

If in doubt, always check the Fansub wiki on http://fansub.andrewlb.com for the spring season. The group listed to fansub the show is indeed subbing it.

Too bad that the anime version of the OP has so little lyrics. It's got a really nice upbeat and very nice vocals. Eiko-tama~ :3

I watched the first episode, and I've a theory (already!) I want to test out on the people who've played the game...

In the pre-OP sequence, the two girls being clubbed to death have orange and green hair. I'm guessing they are related to Mion and Rena, which is why they don't want to talk about the murders to Keiichi?

Also, where would I go to get the sound novel itself? Amazon.co.jp?

EDIT: might have to go to specialty stores like animate.

Anyway, some introductions to the series ("the same day in June every year for four years") made me think of Shirley Jackson's short story "The Lottery".
If you haven't read it,
please do so, it's one of the greatest American short stories ever. (http://www.geocities.com/cyber_explorer99/jacksonlottery.html)
I went and re-read The Lottery, and guess what? The lottery is every year in June as well!

Like kj said, you're only seeing the tip of a very, very, very big ice berg. So if I were you, I'd wait until at least Onikakushi is over before making any predictions. ^^

Also, where would I go to get the sound novel itself? Amazon.co.jp?
Amazon doesn't ship games overseas. If you want to buy the game, go to HimeyaShop (http://www.himeyashop.com/index.php) and place a custom order (it doesn't cost anything extra) for "Higurashi no Naku Koroni: Onikakushi~Himatsubushi-hen" and "Higurashi no Naku Koroni Kai: Meakashi~Minagoroshi-hen" (http://07th-expansion.net/Soft/Higurasi.htm). You can add a link to that page when making the request, they'll get it.

After seeing the first episode subbed.. wtf? Most of the anime seems like a poorly done harem anime with terrible terrible character designs.. but unerneath the surface there lies a mystery with many bloody secrets in this small town.. My interest is kinda piqued, just need to fastforward through the unfunny harem parts. The opening song is hella good and those little girl's alternate selves look damn creepy, especially Hatchet Chick. Why is the green haired chick wearing a shoulder holster and keep hancuffs in the club locker O_o

Little schoolgirls shouldn't look so damn cheerful while carrying large cutting instruments!

Wind's translation was fine when it was there (only a couple of mistakes from what I remember). They did miss (as in leave out) some lines though. (Especially some of the important ones like the news paper.) It's more colloquials(sp) than Ayu's but it is still correct.

(Disclaimer: I have not entirely watched Ayu's, just skipped around to some of the parts that were missing from Wind's.)

Neither attempted the onscreens in the preview though. Can anyone actually read those?

Great first episode, can't wait to see what kind of ride this show is gonna take us on. I was getting alittle worried that no one was gonna sub it. Now i can rest assured that with two groups working on it, my chances of getting a weekly fix for this are good. After watching both versions Ayu's is soild like they always are. Wind from what i understand, it was there first time doing a sub and even though they missed a few line's they get major props for acually using "WTF" and having a easy to read font.

Just watched Ayu's first episode sub. Looks like a cool show if one can stand the pretty badly excecuted humor (imo). That picnic bit felt so long.
Then again, it's not a comedy show, so I guess too funny would make you miss parts of the good stuff.
Haven't read novel.

question:

At the very beginning, that is Keiichi beating up Rena and Mion isn't it?
The year mentioned at the beginningmakes it seem that it's in the past, but the "present" might very well have happened before the clobbering.
So right now I'm expecting Rena and Mion going evil on Keiichi, and that Keiichi has no choice but to fight back, and kill the evil beings.
If that's the case, then I guess the ride will be entertaining enough as a horror, but I'm hoping for stuff to completely take me by surprise.

Also, for some reason, I get the feeling that that reporter will die a horrible death....

Some humors can be quite otaku-ish in this show. After all, the original novel is a doujin game. As a whole, you should be able to enjoy the comedy as long as you have a basic understanding of things like moe and other popular otaku trends.

The "present time" in the story is year 58 of Showa (1983). Higurashi no Naku Koroni is a story that takes place entirely in the past.

As for Tomitake, well...

Neither attempted the onscreens in the preview though. Can anyone actually read those?
They're just tiny hints at what the next episode will contain, not all that important compared to Dark Rika's voice. ^^;

But for the heck of it,

Episode 1:
"The riverside where the bonfires burned"
"The cottons flowing away on the surface of the river at night" (well, too bad the double meaning of "wata" is going to be lost in an English translation)
"The raindrops fall from the edge of the eaves"
"The Watanagashi of the year after... in other words..."
"Rena and Keiichi comes down the path after the rain."
"It's tonight...!"

I'm very happy that a sub finally turned up, just watched it now.

Its everything i was hoping it would be, the humors spot on imo, perfect humor for the type of mystery story the show should have, also - i'm sure i'm not the only one thats in love with the darkside of the show. It may have only appeared a few times, but man it was such an amazing feel, i'm so happy this is gonna be 26 episodes! ^_^

Also, it probably has the best OP of the new season imo.

Since it's subbed I can likely join in here again without fear of spoilers.

So yeah. Good episode and very nicely done. My knowledge of the story is limited to Daybreak and the stuff I've heard from others (I have the game but I'm waiting on a legal copy before I play, which likely won't be until after the anime is over) but I love how intelligently they used the time-of-day settings. Very well-done.

As for what to expect from the show, I'd suggest expecting what you've seen in the first episode. Some cute, some laughs and some brutalizing of the peoples:)

After having seen episode 1 I can say that I'm slightly dissapointed, but I'll keep watching for now.

The biggest (perhaps only) problem in my opinion was the comedy. It just didn't work for me and even though I found it more or less amusing most of the time, I think they used way to much chibi mode and funny faces. They're only funny if used wisely and sparingly and that was not the case in epsiode 1.

However, the dark mystery parts really worked for me. Especially the end of episode 1 when the....the protagonist (forgot the name, sorry -_-;) finds the newspaper was brilliant! If only they had had more of that and less of the bad comedy...

I'll join the club I suppose. The comedy was pretty funny, although a little rough at times (need some balancing).

And just wow...pre-OP sequence was pretty scary...literally smashing someone's body with a club....*shivers*. Never let a moe~ girl carry an axe....and smile while doing so.

Definately going to keep watching this.

PS: Rena's VA sounded very familiar...did she voice in another anime recently?

The comedy is only there to provide a clear contrast between the "normal daily life" and "abnormal life" when the serious stuff begins (as of episode 2, it's starting). Even in the original sound novel, many gamers "gave up" at this comedy part too because they found it pointless and tedius to wade through.

But if you can be patient, Higurashi is a very rewarding story... Well, it all depends on how well the anime can pull it off though.

:dots: Why the hell is that there

Anyway...

Nice ep... characters are a little simple but for some reason they seem to look better in the rest of the episodes...

I'm not really into horror movies and the other stuff... but this anime is prety Good... which is also my rating for the first episode... however it's taking the op into consideration... meaning the op made it look better

The rest of the episodes are really interesting... I think I'll follow the series just because it looks good and makes other types of series (Comedy, Action...) look better... maybe because I was getting a little bored seeing comedy, action, comedy, action...

Why the hell is that there
It's because of the way the forum software works. When I created the new Higurashi forum, I also created a number of new threads so that people could start posting (this is required since only Mods and Admin can create the new threads). kj1980 then extracted various episodes 1 posts from the old generic Higurashi thread (the one that used to be in the Fansub forum) and merged them into this thread. But since they were created before I made the thread, they appear before my post. The end result is that while my post was at one point the first post of the thread, after the merge it appears to be in the middle of the thread totally out of place. If you look at the first post of the thread you will see kj1980 had made an edit and copied the same info I had posted (plus some extra) effectively duplicating the original post I made. The same happened with most of the other threads in this forum as well :)
Like you, I'm not really into horror movies and such. If the story / artwork continued as it was for the first 30 seconds of this episode then it would be unlikely I would have watched anymore. It was the fact there's a strangle blend of comedy along with the "little" hints that the situation isn't as normal as it appears that has enticed me to continue.

Damn... my theory that your some sort of Terminator Admin from the future is gone :(

I know this is not the right place to ask this, but I'm terrified of posting in any of the game/general/questions threads, because they all tend to have spoilers, and I don't want to risk being spoiled.

My question is: What kind of game is Higurashi? How do you play it? Is it a choose-your-own-adventure kind of game?

On an on-topic note: I love episode 1!

Woah. Old thread is old.

To answer your question:

1. It's technically not a game but more of a book with music and sounds.

2. Click and read.

3. On the PS2 port, yes.
