Wow, 15 choices and you get 8 in a box =o Seems like the company making them are relatively new to the TF scene as far as stuff on hlj goes, wonder if the quality's any good when you've got them there in front of you. Seems pretty good on those pics though.

I'm totally new to figure collecting, but I pre-ordered the Higurashi trading set that's coming out in August, as I really liked the designs they used (even though I don't particularly care for the game art!). Wow... thanks for the link =o Taken me from 'on the fence' to 'seriously considering', the quality of those *is* really good. Shame you can see the arm joints really obviously, but I doubt that'll be so bad unless you're looking up really close, and it seems a small sacrifice for that kind of quality.
Well, you'll get 8. Whatever's included in each figure will come with it, and you'll probably get at least one variation of each girl, then another 3 seen as they come in boxes of 8 (and there's 15 variations in total looking at the hlj link, so you won't be getting them all)
All these years of not buying anime merchandise and now I'll probably have 2 boxes of trading figures in the same month. Damn.

Actually, once I can scrape some dollars together, what I'd like to do is get a hold of both of the Rena models and do some conversion work. Ideally I'd like to get casual-clothes Rena with an angry face and the machete, and get school-clothes Rena with the happy-evil face. I'll have to remove and reattach some hair (or at least the hat), I know, but the end effect would hopefully be worth it.
I bring more love from Winter Festival 2006, and i know some people including me are gonna love this~

First Press editions comes with a collectible card.
Whoa, today I happened to be randomly in the local anime store (actually, my wife wanted Pocky and it was the closest place to get some). And I found Higurashi collectible figures.
I'll post a picture of the one I got later on. Their opened sample one was Mion sitting at what looked to be a school desk.
There's a character image album in the works,

The project is headed by Katakiri Rekka, who sung the anime's ED theme.
An image album is basically a collection of music tracks (vocal) composed with an image of something in mind. In a character image album, each track is composed with the image of a specific character in mind.

1. 5 "collection playing cards" (as cdjapan calls them)
2. "Commemorative Starter book" (again, cdjapan - looks to be in black and white minus the cover)
3. Mini Soundtrack CD! (Not the anime OST, no idea what's on it)
4. TIPS (ie what's on this forum, although I dunno if it'll be something more substantial or just extra text in the DVD menu)
5. The DVD itself.
6. No idea. Shoved the kanji through altavista and got "Whole volume purchase benefit application ticket" - maybe you get one of these little things for every volume you can buy and do something with them afterwards if you get the lot? *shrug*

While I agree with this statement, it's probably for quite different reasons than you had in making it. Violence, horror, mystery, moe, a 4-episode arc format that would fit nicely with the R1 DVD distribution pattern, perhaps most importantly a low budget and not being tied to a huge property in Japan, thereby meaning low license costs asked... the series itself is prime licensing material, a juicy apple hanging on the tree. Two caveats, though...
First, it seems that nearly no companies have the funds to license *anything* at the moment. The R1 anime industry has been in dire straits for quite some time - even just looking at this past week, Central Park Media laid off 90% of its staff, which is most likely indicative of the company going bust or about to go bust in some fashion.
Secondly, Higurashi is at least partially sponsored by/tied to Geneon Japan. Geneon Japan is rather notoriously tied to Geneon USA when it comes to licensing things. They rarely let titles go to other American companies, and as of late, they've had a trend of pre-licensing series to Geneon USA quite a long time in advance - or even before the series airs at all (see: Fate/Stay Night, Black Lagoon, etc), and they generally advertise this by putting Geneon USA in the credits or otherwise announcing the property. This has not happened to Higurashi; indeed, there's been no word whatsoever from Geneon USA regarding the title. If anyone would be licensing this show, it'd be them, so... given the above I'm not particularly optimistic about Higurashi's license prospects for the time being.

Nope, most of your points are exactly what I meant, especially about Geneon. I would've actually thought of the combination of "Violence, horror, mystery and moe" as a bad thing though, although putting all of Onikakushi on one disc would do a pretty good job of ensnaring anyone who happened to watch all of it, buying the DVD in the first place would be the problem. I've seen too many people instantly turned off by the character designs and not even letting the series get into its flow, and that would only be made worse when you had to go out and buy it rather than download the fansubs and give up a few hours to watch it. As a result, it would end up a very niche show - people who got used to the character designs and didn't mind the comedy as well as enjoyed the violence and mystery, and that kind of audience just isn't something licensing companies can really target right now. At least Fate/Stay Night has a chance to get noticed because of its action and elements of world mythology rather than just Japanese culture. Higurashi would be very much a 'rely on the fansub watchers' to spread it.
Of course, I don't pretend to understand the industry, so if it does get licensed I'll be happy, and I'd pick up the R1s in addition to the R2s, but it doesn't look likely. Shame really, a lot of the people who're dismissing it would probably enjoy it too.

So in conclusion, to keep this to the topic, there's another reason for people on the fence about buying R2 DVDs to go for it.

Doubt anywhere's going to sell them all complete, Hobbylink Japan has the set they all came from, which is 10 in a box even though there's only 6 (5+1 secret) to collect. Would probably work out cheaper for you if you could find a way to sell the doubles.

Still, much as I'd love one, 7140 Yen plus various shipping and deputy costs is pretty hard to justify for a clock, even considering the fact it's limited, (I think they stop the Rena/Mion one in November and the Rika/Satoko on the 10th October) I'm getting the DVDs anyway, I could use a new clock, and uh... it's Rika and Satoko! If anyone actually has the money to buy one let us know though :heh:

Oh god, you reminded me of one of the alarms I have on my phone. o__O; Especially the "heart attack" comment...
Waking up to 「 嘘だっ!嘘だっ!嘘だっ!嘘だっ!」certainly is not very good for the heart, but I will say very effective... as well as some evil laughter from Shion in Watanagashi's version of the Rika stab-stab (as now I can say with proof that was Shion and not Mion <3, yay~).

Dunno when this popped up, but it's out already - 2 discs of tracks from the Higurashi answer chapters! Includes dai's tracks that many people have probably already heard, along with a whole load of others. Unfortunately, it doesn't have ALL the tracks - particularly noticeable is the lack of anything by 煉獄小僧 (彷徨いの言葉は天に導かれ and ZERO especially) which is the only reason I haven't ordered this right this minute. Still, for anyone who'd like to get a good idea of the music in the answer chapters without actually buying them this might be a viable alternative - not much chance of getting hold of dai's Thanks/you at this point after all.

Oh, and that tracklist for the soundtrack... Who did the track ordering? "虚" between "search and destroy" and "宴"? ^^; Someone listening to it will look like a bipolar to others. :heh:
And 煉獄小僧's "彷徨いの言葉は天に導かれ" and "ZERO" are two of the best tracks from Tsumihoroboshi-hen, so it's really a bummer for them to not be included.
If the anime's finale for Tsumihoroboshi-hen is any good, someone should try to edit those two tracks into the scene, like Psyeye did with Digital Network. ^^;
Cheers for the link. Hmm... I hope mr '5zizz' can do a good job with the music, like the art so that and the new scenarios are probably the last things to worry about. Not expecting a sound novel calibre job but at least something more interesting than Kawai's 'oooh oooh drumdrum' effort for most of the anime OST as of late.
As for the tracklisting, I suppose it's better than them putting every single variation of 'you' in one huge line, though 宴 is pushing that a bit... that song is just TOO happy.

Cover for DVD Volume 3 is up and, as usual, it pwns. These just seem to be getting better, I love the background. This one'll also be the decisive volume when it comes to the animation, as it contains the dreaded ladder scene. Please don't leave it as it is ;_;
Also, they apparently got the message about having 2 DVDs loose being silly and have started doing LE boxes - each volume and mini CD now comes in a box with the main cover art on the front, opening at the side with a fancy border and 'SPECIAL LIMITED EDITION' written in English and Japanese at the bottom. Which is good, but my Vol 1's going to look stupid now. If anyone has the first DVD can you confirm once and for all that it's just the 2 DVDs loose? Mine still hasn't come despite being ordered over a month ago -_-

Technically, Rena's signature weapon, 鉈 (nata) is probably best translated as "hatchet". It's design is a mixture of an axe and a cleaver, and is primarily used for farming or hiking purposes.
Rena's hatchet is slightly unusual because of the pointed tip, which isn't usually present in normal hatchets. Ryukishi07-san probably got the design from actual hatchets being used in the village of Shirakawa (the real-life village in Japan that Hinamizawa was based on): Shirakawa hatchets (http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/2232/img20060816005046uz3.jpg).
You might find ones that are similiar if you looked at farming toolshops (in Japan, at least), but if you want Rena's hatchet, you'll probably have to have it custom made.

For one thing, some bits that were edited for the TV versions have been changed. I didn't save the screenies, but one example would be the very start (when Keiichi's beating Mion and Rena with the bat) The TV version is a fair bit darker than the DVD version, so you can see more blood and stuff. According to Nork who has the DVD (mine STILL hasn't arrived, geez) a few scenes have been reanimated, but really we won't know the extent of the changes until the third DVD next month when the excessive facial contortions start popping up (via the ladder scene). I presume that was what you were hoping they'd clean up? If so, you can join me in hoping :)

Me three on the facial expressions. It got really out of hand in episode 20 (or 19; Meakashi-hen all kinda melds together for me) with Shion going nuts.
And that hatchet/cleaver/machete thing is awesome. I wonder how much it would cost to have something like that made.

Yes, the facial expressions are part of my concern. But I'm just wondering what else they changed in the anime. Onikakushi had pretty good animation I thought, but then it seemed to get progressively worse/lazier as the series went on. I wasn't aware that anime DVDs sometimes 'clean up' episodes compared to the TV versions... (clean up as in change/edit episode, not just the resolution or bitrate, etc).

This is a gaiden (side story) about Keiichi & Co.'s daily lives.

This Nekogoroshi DVD can be redeemed by entering with proof of purchase stamps for all 9 Higurashi DVDs (I do not know if the DVD set on sale December will contain the application stamp). Although all applicants can receive this, I do not know if they will ship internationally, as postage fee is normally required.
Since Vol. 9 won't be out until April, and it usually takes months until the merchandise is shipped out, this will be a long wait (I received a special Pani Poni Dash! guidebook 5 months after sending out the redemption procedures).
I stopped buying the Higurashi DVDs aftger Vol. 3, but this is good motivation for me to resume.

It's still not nearly as bad as what they did with Simoun. One could say that it got completely out of hand on some of the products associated with that series, despite the show itself having pretty mild sexual content (though definitely more than Higurashi). Maybe DEEN just has a habit of doing this kind of thing.

It would be great if it is so, but I don't think they have finished the PS2 game yet...they still havn't have a solid date on the release date
So far as my limited skills can tell, he starts out talking about how much good the cake the staff had at a celebration was, and then says that the previously announced release date of this Sunday (1/28) was propoganda, but he says that that it'll be out soon, and will be as good as the cake. Of course, then he jokes that the cake is salty, and who knows what he means by that... So, basically, we know that they're alive and well at the company and working to get it released. They had something to celebrate about, at least... Or maybe they're all insane from a cake overdose or something.

They are merely including her in PS2 game. There doesn't seem to be any indication of any new chapters from Manga will be used. Two out of three new chapters's synopsis has been revealed, and it's quite unlikely that Miotsukishi-hen, the new ending, will be based on Onisarashi/Yoigoshi/Utsutsukowashi.
There's only two more voice actrors with question marks as their role, so there probably isn't more space for more additional characters...

Well, now that I've read the diary again, it actually says "it went gold".
With the arts of Tateyomi (ask kj or Sushi if you want to know better), diary says "ますたああつプしたよ", obviously means "マスターアップしたよ (= it went gold!)".
Also, the last line says... well... "Ni-ni-... ni- (= 22 2)", so it's safe to assume the X-day will be Feb 22, unless there's more crazy murder in Japan.
They're officially going to announce the date in the event at Jan. 28, but it seems that they couldn't help it... Surely it was one hell of big project for Alchemist too, after all.

IMO, it is nice, but some parts of the tracks are plain wrong.
Higurashi lost its disturbing/eerie aspect, and was simply flat, dark and rock (and frankly, the chorus and the heavy rock parts weren't my cup of tea). this is a waste, considering how nice were the intro, sound effects and distorsion.
Hare Hare Yukai is sooooo sugarcoated that i thought i would became diabetic with only listening to it :heh:
-why, or why not is really impressive. actually, i think it is better than the real thing, considering that Nakae Kouki has a way better english accent that our poor Rekka XD
-Bouken DeshouDeshou is also interesting, with a different style.
but the main common problem in these tracks is : you can often notice the singer inhale/exhale too much, but it is solid quality, considering it is a doujin work.

They're based off of the Character CD that came out not too long ago. Notice that it's Keiichi and Oishi on the front.
The reason for the Noooo Hinamizawa is that the lyrics (the Engrish ones anyway) go like this:

1st volume for north american DVD release is coming out this June. Best wait for that. Other than that you can only get fansubs or illegal Hong Kong bootleg DVDs that would have crappy quality english subs and are not worth it especially since the official release is coming in a mere 2 months.

I doubt you'd find any Higurashi stuff in shops in Canada yet, I havent seen any Higurashi stuff at the local comic/collector shops here in Ontario. Best bet would be to order online from a place like Hobbylink Japan for example, which ships to Canada and has a bunch of Higurashi stuff.

Is the DVD version of Higurashi really alot better than the TV version?? Are some skipped scenes from TV actually placed into DVD? I heard it has uncensored scenes and the characters are more scary and some of the funny "crazy mode" faces are replaced with something more effective to scare the audience....... I heard it in other threads here but can anyone confirm?? Does anyone have samples to compare between DVD and TV version??
Maybe I don't have the sharp eye of an artist but in some of the anime I have watched, the DVD don't seem to have much difference than the TV. Is this the case with Higurashi too or is it just me??

- yes~~ there is a story mode!! (various ends decided by which 2 characters are select)

I have seen versions of the Rena statue online, ther'es also a Shion version. They shouldn't be TOO hard to find.
As for the Mion and Shion, they might be ahrder to track down, I have seen some pop up on Ebay from time to time, though. I'd think that was your best bet.

Oh, that? I think it's a doujin, but more of a compilation as it has many small short stories based on Higurashi from many different artists and styles. The first few pages of some Hanyuu, I can take a picture or scan tomorrow if you like. xD

If you're referring to PCV figurines, then the sites I've seen list them as being out of stock. They do pop up in eBay though (I bought this Rika figurine (http://img178.imageshack.us/img178/3838/fig3bst1.jpg) from there), so it might be worth looking both there and of course in Japanese auction sites such as Yahoo (http://auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/).

The Max Factory set often pops up again right after it is sold. It is part of their tactic to keep the price up. (since they appear to only have one, and are selling it one at a time)
If you do buy the set, please keep in mind you might want some super-glue with it. It is very difficult to put some of the pieces together (snapping Rena's legs and skirt together) and I've 'broken' a couple of pegs on the figures before and had to glue them back on. Otherwise, they're really nice quality. Sadly the faces aren't interchangable between different kinds of hair, so each character is only limited to the expressions that come with their specific figure.

Technically, Rena's signature weapon, 鉈 (nata) is probably best translated as "hatchet". It's design is a mixture of an axe and a cleaver, and is primarily used for farming or hiking purposes.
Rena's hatchet is slightly unusual because of the pointed tip, which isn't usually present in normal hatchets. Ryukishi07-san probably got the design from actual hatchets being used in the village of Shirakawa (the real-life village in Japan that Hinamizawa was based on): Shirakawa hatchets (http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/2232/img20060816005046uz3.jpg).
You might find ones that are similiar if you looked at farming toolshops (in Japan, at least), but if you want Rena's hatchet, you'll probably have to have it custom made.

OK, so the figurines near the beginning of the thread....I got 2 at sakura con in seattle for 8 bucks... then 4..... you can get them at anime conventions pretty cheap....(i got sh-mion and satoko [with a cute collar])
and my friend came back from japan last year and got me the "higurashi matsuri complete guide" with tips and all, and....maybe....ANSWERS!?!? it has satoshi in it and everything....but i can't find anyone who has seen it or even heard of it.. let alone translations.....does anyone know about the completee game guide book?? and i really suck with kanji, and it has pages on pages of text.....T_____________T has anyone heard of it???

But well, Higurashi is very succesful. And there's, literally, endless amounts of things you could do with it thanks to the whole alternate world thing. And Natsumi's story, if you've checked out her in the manga, is really neat because it's all outside of Hinamizawa, which gives you a whole other view on the thing. More Natsumi!based arcs are a huge plus if you ask me. :(

It was in Kakera Asobi though, the expansion for the PS2 version. Although, I guess Kizuna was probably in planning before they released Kakera Asobi, so whatever.
Although Kakera Asobi added more elements of Matsuribayashi-hen into Miotsukushi-hen, it's still not Matsuribayashi-hen. There are many differences in the core story itself.
I dunno why both Ryukkishi07 or the scenario writer from Alchemist both can't wrap up Higurashi...it would've been good if they actually combined the good parts of both story instead of have 2 sepearate flawed endings...

Ah. I was under the impression that they added the whole of Matsuribayashi-hen into Kakera Asobi.
Although Kakera Asobi added more elements of Matsuribayashi-hen into Miotsukushi-hen, it's still not Matsuribayashi-hen. There are many differences in the core story itself.
I dunno why both Ryukkishi07 or the scenario writer from Alchemist both can't wrap up Higurashi...it would've been good if they actually combined the good parts of both story instead of have 2 sepearate flawed endings...I think that's what the novelizations are supposed to do.

This isn't actualy related to Higurashi but Ryukishi is writing a new light novel series online called ヴェロキア竜騎兵物語 ("velocity" Dragoon Legend) and I think it's illustrated by the guy who does the portraits in Umineko

Sorry to disagree with you all, but I HATE thier new designs. They look like aliens. They don't even have knobs for hands anymore! The knobs were the heart of the game TT___TT

Out of curiosity, did they remove the pantyshots or some of the outfits from the portable version? Or did the developers decide that they weren't risqué and left them in?

I'd be more concerned about the fact that Takano doesn't wear ANY underware XD. The first time I saw it saw like, "Geez Takano, put some pants on!"

I don't know about the anime version, I don't think they ever showed her upcolse enough down there to tell, but in Daybreak, all of her costumes besides the one she usually wears, when she falls over instead of seeing underware like the other girls, you see skin. Outfits like the nurse one and the general one show this.

I hadn't noticed that. Though, now that you mention it, I think that Satoko also doesn't have any underwear on when she's sporting her bath towel.
PS: Based on what can be seen when they're wearing bathrobes, it appears that both Oishi and Akasaka use boxers rather than briefs. :)

Are you referring to Higurashi Kizuna (http://www.gametrailers.com/game/6725.html)? It's a port of the PS2 version of the visual novel. However Daybreak is also being adapted for a handheld console.

Is there an official playing card deck, even with ugly cards like these: http://photo.163.com/photos/koesuki/58939321/#p2 I've seen nicer ones which I think were DVD bonus cards and only aces.
If they don't exist is printing a custom deck allowed, and if so is it permissible to sell copies of the deck at cost to other fans? (I am unlikely to do this given the expense but, the more decks printed the less per deck.)
Also, this was posted awhile back. I'm sure it isn't needed anymore but maybe people have the same questions now that Kai is released (I think)
Two questions.
1. If I bought the DVD (Somewhere in Canada, maybe on internet) is there any possible way to put subtitles on? I would buy the DVD the chance I could if I have the ability for English subs.
2. Is there a possibility that I could buy some Higurashi no Naku Koro ni murchandise in Canada... BC to be exact? :heh:
It is possible to add subs to a DVD but it is a lot of work and I haven't done it. I also don't know if adding a translation is allowed even if it is just for personal use. You'd need to rip the disk to your hard drive. Next, extract the current subs to get timing data (if you will be modifying them) or time it out yourself. You'd then need to either burn your subs into the video or use an authoring program to attach them. Then an appropriate program should be able to burn it just like you were backing up the disk. Unless you replaced an existing track or modified the menu you'd have to load the subs manually once the video started.
Most, possibly all, of the software you'd need is available for free from the wonderful opensourcers of the world, but actually using it to do a project like this is a bit beyond my knowledge. Please PM me instead of replying if you have questions since this is off topic.

Try them game-importing stores...perhaps there are better ones out there, but I have used play-asia before and they are alright.
