Any Fansubbing tutorials available?

Does anyone know if there is any good fansubbing tutorial available. I don't know if im asking on the right channel, tell me if I'm wrong and please tell me where to go.

This topic has bugger all to do with the discussion of fansub series so I've moved it into the Fansub Groups forum where it might get a reply. Please have a look at the available forums and post in the appropriate one, not the first one you come across.

Fansub groups don't want to write tutorials because there are more than enough useless groups popping up all over the place as it is. The fansubbing community doesn't really need any more new groups, because as it is 99% of the new groups are only duplicating work done better by older groups. If you want to contribute to fansubbing, and even more importantly, if you can translate, go find an existing group you like and volunteer to help out. Don't start a new group for no reason. If that starts happening, the frequency of oversubbing will decrease, the release speeds of existing groups will increase, and more and more anime that would otherwise never be seen fansubbed will be.

I don't think this is true. There is always room for new groups. If the people running the group are going to be complete idiots and resub something for the 10,000th time, that's a whole other issue. A new group forming does not automatically mean that an already subbed show will be done again.

Besides that, if tutorials existed, people would already be primed for joining a group as well as creating a group and so on. There would be more people willing to join the production side without having to go and beg others to show them how to do things. I believe that if someone actually wrote out how everything works instead of just saying "go to doom9, read some shit that doesn't completely relate to this, oh and here's this infusion thingy", the community would benefit immensly.

Sorry, but without reading resources which were pointed out 20 times already and simple trying, trying again, getting better and trying again you won't be able to reach something.
The only position where there aren't more people than open positions are translators and good editors. Nobody can/should start a fansub group if he/she hasn't these positions filled.

More fansub groups are always welcomed, provided you fansub something different (there're dozens, if not hundreds, of series available, specially older ones) or continue a series that have been abandoned (like Overman King Gainer or Kasumin)

Sorry, but without reading resources which were pointed out 20 times already and simple trying, trying again, getting better and trying again you won't be able to reach something.

Despite the dripping sarcasm within your post, a nice simple and concise guide along the lines of "this is what you have, this is what you want, this is how you achieve it, and here are the variables and what they do" all within the realm of fansubbing an anime would be invaluable. You say to read the resources that are pointed out, well, fine. But, the efficiency could be much greater and people wouldn't have to waste so much time trying to pool tiny bits of information out of so many websites, forums, and so on and then somehow put it all together. Sure, it's possible to do but a new guide dedicated solely to fansubbing would be much more effective.

Interesting tutorial, though it seems to me to be rather lacking. I also found quite a few errors:

From the editing page: "Do you know that ..? is more correct than ...?" Um... it isn't. The ellipsis is a grammatical fixture that is not modified by other punctuation you wish to apply to it. If you want to put a question mark after it, you do just that: Put it AFTER it, without omitting one of the periods. I also liked the misspelling of "mistakes."

On the whole, they did a pretty good job with the guide, but I still stand by my opinion that new groups are not necessary. If someone wants to sub an older show that isn't being done currently, join an existing group and ask them to do it. More staff will let existing groups do more work, and slow the "urban sprawl" of the fansubbing community. There's no reason that ten new groups, each with their own translator, need to pop up on a weekly basis and try to get themselves on the map with a "popular" series done by a multitude of others, when the staff of those groups would be much better used in an existing group.

eh, if you knew how picky GipFace was you wouldn't say that. :heh: The "mistake" is a joke, just like "teh."

The guide itself is more or less a good basis on "positions," which is all a guide should do. Any more would be to impose.
