I felt the background music was this time not up to par with the other episodes. Other than that once again a superior episode.

I was already going to praise her seiyuu for last episode's dialogue, but since I didn't get a chance to do it, I'll do it now. That scene was just hilarious thanks to her.

On another note, this episode has the highest cuteness level I've ever seen. Imouto and Yuki getting so much screentime = awwwwww. As usual, Haruhi and Kyon keep us laughing, Mikuru makes her occasional squeals and Itsuki... smiles. All in that, another perfect episode.

Could next episode be... a Yuki one?! *waves his brand new Yuki fanclub flag*

Ah~! So much cuteness in one ep. Everyone already covered the good parts though.
So... I'll just give my one little comment. This ep lets us see how complex Haruhi is, I think. I'm not for thinking deep when I don't have an essay to write, so I'll just say it was interesting watching her level of interest affect her personality. Especially on the way to the private island, her introduction, and how she hesitated at the end.

It is kind of weird how similar Kyon's sister and Mikuru look though.

Sure it could be lighting, angle, contacts or an eye-colour-change-condition. Still despite the eye colour difference, there is remarkable resemblence.. Ahwell.

It is highly unlikely. I don't think that they would send someone who already existed in that time. But Mikuru being his sister's daughter, or even his daughter or granddaughter, would be a possibility.

I was thinking about a show I watched once. It was a murder mystery cruise for amatuer detectives complete with a murder for them to solve and a prize for the winner. That got dropped when there were several "real" murders for them to try and solve. When someone finally solved them it turned out that they were really the staged murders that they were supposed to solve. I can't help but think that this might be similar. A staged murder to keep Haruhi occupied.

Asahina in a secretary-like outfit said naughtily,

"Then I'll show you proof!"

She then promptly began to unbutton her blouse. When she opened the second button, she revealed her bust to my astonishment.

"Look, can you see the star-shaped birthmark? It's not stuck on! You want to touch it?"

There was a star-shaped birthmark on her left breast, an attractive highlight on the white skin, radiating charm.

"So now you believe?"

How should I say this? I don't even remember ever seeing whether Asahina had a birthmark on her breast. Though I was kinda forced into seeing her change when she dressed as a bunny girl a while ago, I wouldn't be so focused as to notice such a small area. While I was thinking the above, the attractive, mature-looking Asahina said,

"That's strange. If you hadn't told me that I had this birthmark, I wouldn't have noticed it myself."

Asahina confusedly shook her head, and then, as if realizing something, her eyes widened and she blushed furiously.

That's what I thought originally, but if you read the epilogue to Volume 1, he just points it out to her, hence making her know, and then able to tell him (it's just like some giant time loop). Although I was hoping it meant that as well XD

Being forced on a relationship seems ugly but its not all so bad, after all Japan has a great deal of aranged marriages, though awkward at first they get used to it as they get to know each other. I'm sure Kyon will get used to it down the road.

Anyway, I gave this episode an 8. It was a bit predictable, but still well executed. As soon as Itsuki mentioned the possibility of a typhoon cutting them off, I knew exactly what would happen... Though I think that was the point. :heh:

Still, the episode did have it's moments. Kyon's sister scored points in this episode for the "loli in a bag" as it's been dubbed, as did Yuki for reading a book while water skiing and the "daisuki" scene. It's safe to say Yuki is now my favorite character in this series. Sorry Mikuru...

The only "real" problem with Haruhi with her cuteness and energy ... is she's completely exhausting to be in contact for very long. I don't get the impression Kyon really *minds* being with Haruhi (he frequently notes how attractive she is (along with Yuki and Mikuru) --- its the feeling he's being dragged into it that bothers him.

That's probably the crux of the series --- whether Kyon will come to grips with the situation and explicitly decide that he *likes* being with Haruhi

No Kyon is not represented by Itsuki,

Haruhi with her godly abilities somehow fitted the 3 characters Mikuru, Yuki and Itsuki into 3 characters she thought up for the show. The 3 characters are 'original' characters thought up by her, they don't represent anyone. Haruhi 'coincidentally' fitted the 3 of them into those roles which in 'reality' are their actual selves: time travelling waitress, magical alien and esper.

Since they aren't representing Mikuru, Haruhi and Kyon, Itsuki choosing Mikuru at the end doesn't mean anything outside of the show. Yuki definitely isn't representing Haruhi.

The conversation between Itsuki and Yuki was indeed talking about Haruhi and Kyon. But this conversation is an actual conversation taking place in the show. Haruhi told the both of them to come up with their own dialogues and the both of them just chatted away with a real conversation.

Haruhi and Kyon's roles in the show are also very similar to their reality counterparts, Haruhi as the director and Kyon as the narrator.

I was thinking more the first one than the second. ;) The first one only implies she took a look at the situation, and realized how similiar it is to a murder mystery though perhaps not quite on the concious level. It doesn't mean the person is necessarily dead. The second means it's an actual murder, or it wouldn't have triggered that reaction. Being an actual murder seems a bit out of place in this series. Not to say it isn't impossible though.

Master had placed a small book into his pocket, thougn I'm not sure if it was the same side as where he was stabbed. That could be the reason why there wasn't too much blood. Although this isn't really a concrete fact since he could've removed it sometime in the middle of him leaving and discovering his body.

Ugg...Kyon did tell Haruhi their true identities before the film(see vol.2 of the novel)...
Kyon is the camera man, though he did serve a role of narrator in the anime but not novel, take note of that(not that it's too important.

I like the bit where Itsuki rushed to the door in desperation. It gives the character Itsuki life, also telling us viewers this fact: "Itsuki is not a random hero with super natural power, he is still a human with emotions!"

Itsuki is yet my favourite anime character...

Side note: Kyon's sister is sooooooo cuuuuuuute!

It is just like what the term 'boyfriend'/'girlfriend' means is different; in Japan a boyfriend just means a friend who is a boy, while in the western usage it is meant to denote an intimate relationship. The Japanese equivalent would be 'kareshi'/'kanojo'.

1)Some undesirable event occurs/is placed upon Kyon, costing him money, time, convenience, etc.
2)This event tends to lead to some opportunity in the form of interaction with Mikuru
3)Kyon says "Well, as long as Mikuru is (insert something positive), I guess (undesirable event) is worth it."

Parody fanart I'm expecting to see: Mikuru, in her bunny waitress uniform, goes Higurashi. Blood and guts are all over the place, but at the end of it all she smiles sweetly at Kyon, who, bystander as he always is, remarks with a loopy smile, "Well, as long as Mikuru-san is happy, I guess some casualties is alright..."

Finally got around to watching the episode (subbed). Initial impressions:

Who's the woman tearing up paper in the beginning of the episode? I'd guess that she's just a random bystander who happens to fit the "jilted lover" appearance, since it's very plausible that the things she's tearing up are love letters and photographs.

There's all the subtitled names/roles that I see in all the mystery anime. You just know that something's going to happen.

Haruhi starts out all formal and polite, and then goes back to being, well, Haruhi. Awesome.

Kyon seems way too worried when Haruhi goes off on her random murder mystery fantasy (with Mikuru as the first victim, no less), fidgeting and being generally edgy. Not that I blame him, really.

Kyon's sister beat Yuki in ping pong. Who else got the impression that this is because Yuki refused to hit any balls except those heading directly towards her? Or is Kyon's sister somehow a great deal more skilled and talented than the average eleven-year old?

Arakawa barely budged when the pillow hit him in the face. Quite unlike Kyon, who got bowled over.

I have the wholly unsupported theory that the whole thing is an act put on by Keiichi and Yutaka, possibly with help/instigation by Itsuki. After all, they may well all be espers, and if Haruhi wants a murder mystery to not be bored, well, then, it's a murder mystery she'll get.

The thing that makes it seem like she didn't know which room was that she looked through the three doors repeatedly. Although I most certainly do think that it was also her sensing something weird going on, it somehow looked like she was lost. :heh:

Master had placed a small book into his pocket, thougn I'm not sure if it was the same side as where he was stabbed. That could be the reason why there wasn't too much blood. Although this isn't really a concrete fact since he could've removed it sometime in the middle of him leaving and discovering his body.

1. He was the murderer. He arranged the trip after all. ;) After rewatching the episode, I've changed my mind and decided that Haruhi did indeed pause because she didn't know which room. She couldn't have paused because she suspected what was wrong, as she already suspected when she told Kyon's sister to stay in the room.;) They weren't told which room, but Itsuki knew anyway, which is evidence he was involved in the killing. This assumes the murder was an act though, as I doubt a main character would be an actual murderer.

2. The entire trip was set up to give Itsuki's organization a chance to study Haruhi's behavior in a semi-controlled environment. Thus Itsuki knew because he was there earilier to make a report or something. In this case the murder could either be real or an act.

Well, Itsuki could've seen the blueprint while the Villa was being planned, or he might have gone to talk to the master in one of the few instance he's not around. IIRC, he wasn't around too much when the SOS団 was in the basement game room. Of course, those are pure specualtions.

Another thing I noticed is that Haruhi doesn't seem to mind Kyon paying more attention to Mikuru. Just as early as Kyon staring at Mikuru who was staring at the maid, I was half expecting something to explode. I suppose I could say Haruhi was too taken by the thought of a desserted island.

Itsuki also used a storm for an example for his explanation for Kyon. All the more to believe that Itsuki is somewhat behind everything.

lol way to go generalizing based on animes and dramas..japan does NOT have a great deal of arranged marriages, very little to almost none infact.. even among the extremely wealthy and powerful

I talked to a Japanese guy about 10 years ago about this, and (at the time) he said that it's about one-third "for love", about one-third fully arranged by parents/relatives, and about one-third "assissted" (with non-binding omiai and similar). And it's not like arranged marriges are always binding - he told me of a friend who had been engaged to someone but that someone got poor results at school and so the arrangement got cancelled.

heh, I expected people to start pointing the finger at Itsuki much earlier - I'm surprised it took this long. Though I've no idea what happens in the novels for this story-arc, to me, Itsuki seemed pretty suspicious from the start - what with his talk of stopping Haruhi from being bored etc. He seems a bit too knowledgeable about detective novels and concepts... and already planned out how Haruhi might react.

ie, I suspect the death is fake... but I could be completely wrong on this.

I didn't think this episode was quite as funny as the rest of the series... though I think a complete lack of Mikuru-molestation may have contributed somewhat to that. I'm still undecided about whether the continuing messed up episode order thing will work or not: it gets points for being so bizarre and unconventional (much like a lot of other things in this series), but it has the potential to turn into a repetitive and annoying gimmick. I think they're going to have to tread about it very carefully.

The story itself was intriguing, despite the fact that it felt suspicously like filler. Worst thing is, we have no idea when we're going to get to the conclusion of this little side chapter.

Overall verdict: Good episode, but lacked the spark that's been in the rest of the series to date. I'd say below average for a Haruhi episode, but that's still awesome.

I completely agree with the second =P It really gives out that impression if you
listen to Itsuki's explaintion at the start of the episode about the literature of
detective stories and how you have to be in the right location~ :eyespin:

Starting to feel kinda annoyed with Haruhi, she rarely shuts up, rarely listens, and has little consideration for others. That made her formal introduction outside the manor feel a little out of place, actually. What she needs is Kyon telling her off, but it seems he doesn't dare to anymore. Ofcourse, it would require her to actually listen. Wasn't too impressed with this episode, some funny moments (girl-in-a-bag!), that's about it.

Thought this was another great ep. Found it intriguing and fun. Seeing the SOS Dan do more normal activities like playing on the beach and playing with fireworks was nice. At least they're doing something normal without something strange happening.

Highlights for me this ep were:
- Kyon's imouto in a bag. She was super cute!!
- Kyon being cut off when he was about to say I love u.
- Mikuru and Haruhi is swimsuits :D
- Kyon when he goes "Which one is the beach ball?"
- Butler getting a face full of pillow
- Haruhi's concerned and worried expression

Plotwise this ep reminded me of the movie I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. Where the pple get stuck on an island in a storm and murders start to occur.

True, but that could also be caused by their frantic running to the room. It is summer.

The author Tanigawa admitted that in Lone Island Syndrome, he had the beginning of the story dragged out for too long before entering the main plot of the story.

In this adaptation, the flow of the story is much smoother. And they managed to give a nice little role for Kyon's sister to join in the party as well without disturbing the flow. (In the novel, Kyon took some time to finally convince his sis to stay behind. )

Oh, and I found the part where Haruhi claims she suddenly knows the culprit is hilarious, when she points to Mikuru as the victim. seeing Mikuru tremble and Kyon suddenly anxious about what might happen made me laugh.

Especially when they're playing cards, and Kyon tells himself what kind of "manor" Haruhi might find suitable, hilarious.

Yuki was moe material in this episode, and especially Kyon no imouto-chan!

I didn't like the whole boobs emphasis on Mikuru though...plus, I feel as if the narration in the beginning, while it helps to establish the setting of the episode, was too linear. There's just something I didn't like about it, probably how it seemed to lead you in a straight path as to what might happen instead of the usual "oh god come what may and hold on tight" pacing of the previous episodes.

This ep was a little duller than the others but i kind understand why its a two parter so there is definetly going to be some wicked stuff in the next one. I think this episode was more of a set up to get auidence prepared for the crazy shit thats most likely to happen next. Most of the episode was them getting to the island. i mean look at the setting a island way of the map, a huge storm no way to call for help and we have our lovable Haruhi wishing to be a murder detective. If i was on the show and knew she was going to wish for that espcially with the strange things that happen around her anyway there is no way in hell i am putting my self on that island. but things are always funnier when its someone elses pain (Hang in there Kyon) I also think the writiers may have wanted this episode to be a little slower than the others i mean look at all the info that was given in episode 5 a couple of episode like that in a row and people might start pulling a Rena from Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (see episode 5 for explanation

Granted she was absorbed with the whole deserted island theme for most of the episode. But she always managed to catch Kyon when hes having his naughty little thoughts about Mikuru. Im noticing more of the looks that she gives him. maybe im leaning into a little to much but i just cant shake the feeling

It's the only saving grace of being forced into the SOS Brigade for him, so I'm not surprised. His comment about her smile being worth taking his sister along says it all.

By the way, I kinda agree with DrewGSR, that grading this episode with a 10 is an indication that you might grade every halfdecent episode like that just because you like the show in general, or on the basis of a couple of great scenes, and not judging the entire episode on its own merits, or in comparison to others. There have been better episodes, which implies this one was worse so shouldn't be worth a 10. In my case, I didn't think it was worth nearly that much and I gave it a 6. Perhaps a bit harsh, but my feeling after watching it was that it didn't deliver as much as some of the previous episodes, despite some great comedy moments. I actually found some parts rather boring. I should note though that I tend to grade conservatively (neither extremely high or low), but that makes the occasional 9 or 10 actually mean something. Well, hope that made some sense. Carry on.

Haruhi likes Kyon everyone knows that, Kyon likes Mikuru, its quite obvious. But at the same time Mikuru likes Kyon, if not she wouldn't have said that he can only choose 1 of them. Of course we all know that Kyon is destined for Haruhi even if Mikuru didn' say that.

So if both girls like the same guy and the guy likes both girls, its a really complicated love triangle.

Well you know if it just does't end up being Kyon and Haruhi I think I'll be happy. I havn't read the novels and I wouldn't have a clue where they go with it, but the Kyon and Haruhi would be to say.. uninteresting.. predictable.. and annoying... But ending it with Yuki, now that would be good!

Just stick with Plain crazy Haruhi and it will be good. Though 13 episodes means no hope that they will make anything.. happen, with the amount of material they still have left with the Novels.

Opinions are taken more seriously when they're supported in some fashion... and you might work on the "teh" ... it doesn't really help your position.
Aside from that, I gave this episode an 8 rather than a 9 or 10 because (spoilered since its relatively fresh):

1) good scripting, but the animation and drawing was mixed. For example, the elongated mouse view up Haruhi's legs was really done poorly (they should take more photos of real legs for this sort of camera angle). Animation ranged from dynamic (really liked the initial bedroom scene of Haruhi jumping up and whippng around to announce a culprit and Mikuru the victim) to jerky (many of the less key scenes were obviously budgeted down).

2) Though they worked hard to give the Clue scenario a reality bending twist with lots of exposition by Itsuki ...its still basically just a "normal" mystery situation. Suzumiya as Nancy Drew. I have my suspicions that a grand gag is being pulled to reinforce the world as "normal" to Suzumiya by the espers.

3) Lots of small really nice bits: the way Haruhi looks at Kyon when he's not watching, Mikuru actually enjoying playing with Suzumiya at the beach, Yuki's slowly growing participation (especially the skiing), the fast-paced banter between the companions.

4) As of yet, in Kyon's linear time, he hasn't really *seen* any completely amazing things (I think the baseball game comes later, right?) so he's still just operating on the idea that these people just might be crazy. So you can hear that he's getting pretty exasperated -- and being less tolerant of Suzumiya's antics (though he didn't seem to mind seeing her and Mikuru playing in the water).

I thought Suzumiya balking at the top of the stairs outside of the master's bedroom was very interesting though I don't know what to think about it yet.

Overall still better than many other "low budget episode / tweener" series examples but items 1&2 in my spoiler section dragged it down a bit.

Next episode jumping elsewhen is semi-annoying but OTOH, we may be getting to see some action.

Well, I usually judge something like this

I wait for it to finish, then start with 10 and subtract. Obviously if I enjoyed the episode, I might disregard what I consider minor annoyances and still give it a 10, as most Haruhi and F/SN episodes. If however there is something that damages my episode enjoyment more than just a minor annoyance, I subtract points accordingly. Obviousy, if there is some sort of redeeming occurence, I add points, so it might still get a 10 despite everything. I know, I'm lenient but that's me :p And since I enjoyed this episode (well, I was a little set off by that "mouse view", but it was short and I didn't actually mind that much, so I let it drop.) Knowing that, you should take into account that a 6 is too low for me for an episode, although F/SN ep 15 and 18 managed to get a 6 from me.

So to recompile this sixth episode thread theories to this episode and to the next (No, I don't know what is really going to happen next), we have:

Kyon's sister, who also happens to be Mikuru whom traveled back in time, all for the reason to stop the killing that had taken place at the manor island. But because Mikuru was unable to stop it, reasonable belief has it that something, some drug, was within the dinner that night. That resulting with the side effect seen in putting younger Mikuru asleep early. Thus probably at some point within the middle of the night, crazy younger Mikuru awakened, went to the kitchen for a knife, returned to the manor master's room to ask for a glass of milk, which once gained access, she then stabbed him in the heart, laughed in an maniac-styled way, and then finally returning to bed.

The butler, who then stumbled upon the scene some time later, took the master's key, locked up the door, and probably now awaiting for the following opening to kill off the rest of the guests, all so that this butler can get a raise once the other family relatives whom planned this, take over.

But most frightening, they eventually discover the killer loli the next night, though far too late. For that Mikuru, whom once believed her fate centered solely around Haruhi, had been discovered dead. And when things eventually did(?) get resolved, as the younger Mikuru was never told that she was the killer (whom had no memories of the event), no connection was ever made on Mikuru's part. And the surprise on the fallen Mikuru's face, shocking.

Oh goodie. :)

I think several if not all other people on the island are also members of this agency and the whole thing is set up by them. Including the typhoon.

Well, even if there is no typhoon, there is no need for a storm; In murder mysteries, you just need the radio equipment and the boats sabotaged in order for a closed circle. You can just blame it on the murderer.

If anything, should Itsuki have planned this, he could have ochestrated the entire scenario. But he can't tell how Haruhi could alter the script at any time; which she apparently did.

Oh i dunno Onizuka, I find that Tsuruya has quite a well developed sense of humor and perhaps the most "normal" girl in the show. Though it is inappropriate in it's timing, her laugh is hilarious. Kinda reminds me of Dr. Julius Hibbert from the Simpsons... cept lolier.

Yuki is cute too but I prefer some emotions when choosing favorites. Kyon refers to her often as a room decoration and I'm fairly inclined to believe him. Although, Yuki has an advantage because I absolutely love short hair.

But really for me, it's a race btween Haruhi and Mikuru. Haruhi just has so much genki-ness and awesomeness flowing through every strand of her hair and Mikuru is the cuteness equivalent of a million puppies.

It's a battle of epic proportions. Though Haruhi took the slight lead this episode with her completely random thoughts. *takes cover from Mikuru fanatics*

I was wondering if the Joker card in the game of Old Maid the SOS-dan were playing on the ferry had any significance (in terms of in-joke or reference)?

The girl on the Joker card looks as though she should be familiar, but I have no clue who she is.
The hair color is purple rather than pink, but I believe the closest person in anime that resemble the joker would be the nurse-girl in Soultaker, who ended up getting her own spin-off show.

Another possibility, with the hair matching in color, could be the youngest member of the "Popo-Tan" anime cast.

BTW I'm curious how anyone finds anything on 2chan? 4chan was pretty easy since it was well organized and you could easily find the pictures and that by subject. 2chan seems to be totally random none of the categories seem to make any sense.

8 for this episode. Really good indeed, though I don't know why everyone is so fond of Kyon's sister ( 'don't like her voice, sorry...). Then that loli-in-the-bag scene is not that exceptional, in my humble opinion. Cut and funny, of course, but not exceptional. If anyone agrees, please say it!
So, 8 only because I think this episode doesn't get "rid" of the cliché as perfectly as the others did.
Then, I need to keep some distance for the amazing stuff that's coming. :D

The House of Black Death is a horror movie from 1965. Interestingly, it's about two brothers using occult powers to battle over the family fortune.

I am uncertain regarding the reference of Koketsu Castle, but there is a book named Koketsu-Jo Kitan (or A Legendo of Koketsu Castle). Interestingly, this book is written by Yoshiki Tanaka, who is incidentally the same author of the Ginga Eiyu Densetsu (or the Legend of the Galatic Heroes) series.

Does anyone know what reference might Lilas Manor come from?
