This is a thread dedicated to character discussions and a limited poll entry for major characters.
In the meanwhile, I have selected the five+one major characters for the polls. However, you are free to discuss any other characters as well. Remember, please don't just blot "XXX is my favorite character" without giving an acceptable reason.
Should you feel the urge to blurt something that hasn't been aired in the anime yet, remember the golden rule: spoiler tags are your friends

If I could vote for everyone, I would. However, I decided to go with Sonozaki Mion as I do have a penchant for very outgoing girls who show signs of dere. Added to that, she is a very great friend to be with!!!

Kinda feel bad voting so early, when everyone is still pretty much a mystery. But there's just something about mion! So here's to her early lead.. =)
Go Go Keiichi!!!
Like Lemonhead I feel bad to have voted so early but their's just something about Keiichi in Onikakushi-hen that made him my favorite character.
I think I really want to get inside his head and their's also the fact that I can't really forgive his killing of Rena and Mion.
BTW, I also happen to like character that actually succeed in making me hate them. Of course, it's not when I hate a character because of a bad story, it's more when a character does something radical or evil and I don't just go "meh... nothing fantatic about that..." or "simply to cliche..."
Mion come close second though...
Arghhh :heh: I may regret this vote since we're moving into Watanagashi-hen and it's suppose to be Mion's chapter...
Well I voted on Mion but it feels kind of early to vote, hope the poll gets reset later when we know more about the character. I choose Mion because of ep5, Mion trying to hide her girly side was really cute, seems like she tries to act more tough than she really is. Close nr.2 comes Keiichi, he seems like a really nice guy.....when he isnt insane :heh:

I'm voting for Sonozaki Mion~! for now... though I am pretty sure I'd vote for her in the future too~
I do like all the characters though. And I will probably like them all even more as the story goes on... except Rika... something about her... *looks around*
I liked Mion to begin with, but episode five made me fall in love. She's so cute. Love Shion second... if only for outer appearances. >__>;
Its kinda hard to choose a fav' character out of all the great bunch that Higurashi has to give - but for now it'll have to be Shion. <3
Gaaah.. if i known no one had voted for Rika - i would have done desu. ;_;
Satoko. Hands Down. No Questions About It. m(_ _)m Everything from her energetic appearance, her ojousama attitude, her smile, her pointy tooth, to her incredibly mature and gentle sides later on.... I haven't felt as moe about a character as I did with Satoko. (>ヮ<)
Once you guys see Tatarigoroshi, you can look back to this post and regret how you didn't vote for Satoko.
And once you guys see the end of Meakashi, you can look back to this post and(clip
There should definately be a second vote for this. Maybe when all the question chapters are out. So you guys can realize your mistakes and vote for Satoko!!
a...ahem.
Once you guys see Tatarigoroshi, you can look back to this post and regret how you didn't vote for Satoko.
I'm sure a lot of us here who haven't play the game are gonna wish we voted for someone else.. theres bound to be more interesting parts to a character in the series that are gonna change our minds.
Not me though.. Shioooon desu~ <3

Like I said, if I could've vote for everyone, I would. From Kei's KOOLness, to Rena's psychosis, Mion's dere, Satoko's....yeah you got that, and Rika's kick-ass line in Tsumihoroboshi, they all deserve a standing ovation from me.
But for me, it was either Mion or Shion. Meakashi-hen was one of my favorite chapters, and the whole picture of Shion's _____________ towards __________ really touched me. Albeit I did feel sorry for ______________, but Minagoroshi-hen really warmed me at how devoted Shion was in __________ ________________ . But I ended up choosing Mion. It's something within her that makes me click. She's just the friend that I would love to have!!!
Anyhow Angelsama, I've posted some Shion pics in the image thread for your pleasure.

Lol, this reminded me of the old school homeworks. Guess I'll print it and try to see - at the end at series - if I'm able to complete it correctly. Just to see If I will have gotten something right. ^^

I'm always against early polls on favourite characters, and more I am in the presence of a show like this. It's obvious how the presentation of the different characters will happen on different stages, and we (non Higurashi world acknowledged) will probably get all the puzzles' pieces in order to give a correct and reasonable vote, just straight at the end, or close to it.
So I obviously second (but I'm fairly sure it will happen) the request for a second poll later on the time.
As for my choice - postponed :o
I mean, in the first 4 episodes we got like a 60% of Rena, 30% of Mion, 5% each of Rika and Satoko. And no Shion.
Now with the new stage, in just an episode things seem to be settled very differently with Mion, Shion and Rika dividing an assumpt of 80%, leaving a 20% to Rena and Satoko. (I could be wrong, but I'm just judging from the appareances).
In example, I didn't like Mion much on the first arc, too much of "tsun" and too little of "dere" in her. Besides, Rena featured the infamous "oyashiro-mode" desu? , and despite my current avatar, I'd still be scared of her :heh: , even if I admit she was totally fascinating in her cutesy combined with insanity.
My choice now would so be for Shion, but, with just 1 episode seen of her, I don't think it would be fair enough. I'm for waiting at least the end of this second arc. And then let's see.

I agree with the other posters that it does feel early to be voting for characters right now, but I can't resist voicing my opinion. My feelings may change when more episodes come out.
Epiosdes 1-4 I liked Mion and Rena equally and as a pair. Rena with her cute tendenices, and Oyashiro-mode dialogue and look. Mion with her way of taking charge and friendliness. The two made a fun combo to watch.
Episode 5 tipped Mion in her favor for me. She's like Asa-sempai in Shuffle or Tina Foster (voice by the same seiyuu as Mion) in Ai Yori Aoishi, two other characters who I also like.
Mion showed a nice range of emotions. From the outwardly strong, extroverted, take charge girl we knew in Ep. 1-4; to Ep.5 where we see her more vulnerable and sensitive side, yearning to have be more feminine and having it that side appreciated by Keiichi.
Like KJ said, Mion is the girl you would love to have as a friend. Kind of why I like Asa-sempai and Tina Foster.
Shion is the intriguing counterpoint to Mion. It is great to have a character like her to play off Mion to bring the best and worst out of each other. If there was vote for supporting-actor category, I would vote for Shion. (Not to actually suggest starting a supporting-actor poll, just my hypothetical musing).
Okay, it's time for me to stop drinking the Mion-Shion Kool-Aid (http://www.wordspy.com/words/drinktheKool-Aid.asp).
Anyhow Angelsama, I've posted some Shion pics in the image thread for your pleasure.
Thanking you. ^___^

i chose Rena...cuz i really like her cutesy yet psychotic personality...it makes her a really interesting char IMO...it's just sumthin about her that makes me like her even more (i love her "oyashiro-sama" mode)
my second choice wouldv been Mion due to most of the same reasons posted above...^^

Hmm.... I really like Keiichi alot! as a male lead, sure he beat up those girls.. but nobody.. is exactly normal.... ^^; in this anime. He has a strong attitude which makes the anime great, and his reactions to lots of different situations are interesting... I just loved the way he handled the card game in episode 5 :heh:
Out of the girls, I'm not a fan of Rena her normal everyday personality doesn't click with me and Rika is just too.. nice ^^; (though seeing more of her might change my thoughts..) I like nice but.. not with her, The whole Twin thing is interesting... I both like Mion and Shion, and I cant decide bettewen those girls right now. I want to see whats with Satoko >.< Just found a little about Rika.. O.o;; Satoko is a bit like Keiichi, her character is more bold. Mion is a bit like that but also she seems more restrained as well.
So I like Satoko and Mion & Shion, Rika and! also Keiichi, (well basically all the characters ^^; ) but so far out of the girls Satoko has the edge with her tooth & better dress (I kinda really! dislike Mion's skirt ^^; ) and with her Voice! and having more interesting screen time where she steals the screen like in ep.1 oh! and! I like her attitude as well. I dont see it changing from Satoko unless.. some character has some amazing screen time, and interesting development.
But still I've voted for Keiichi because, he is a lead who has attitude, humor and his normal personailty is just great! to watch. Though there is that.. other side :heh: but you cant hate him for it, all the characters are a bit crazy.. ^^;I agree with the other posters that it does feel early to be voting for characters right now, but I can't resist voicing my opinion. My feelings may change when more episodes come out.Thats why early poll are good, its always interesting to see how and how many people change there minds about certain characters.
Two words describes why Rika is my favorite:

I voted for Rena. Her "kana~kana~" and "Usoda!!!" has gone down in my obsession list ^^
For other characters not listed above, I go for Oishi. He somehow reminds me of Mr.Hercule Poirot ^^
I voted for Mion, just because she's bold enough to be carrying a gun around in public. Of course also her character and personality. She owns Keiichi.
Though for some reason, I like the way Satoko talks. Sometimes she ends in ~desu, ~nee, ~waa, or ~yol(? someone correct me).
^
And I don't know what they mean? (polite, rude?)
Also I find it hard to believe the VA also voices Kagome from Inuyasha.
Rena, kana~!

I really like how this series is able to capture the archatypal friends a person can have. I mean, don't we all know a Rena, Mion, Satako and Rika?
Rena = Cute, kind, always there for you. Peppy and eccentric.
Mion = Tough, protective, opinionated and funny.
Satoko = Fun loving and wild.
Rika = Kind, introverted, would rather hear what people have to say than say things herself.
Another interesting thing I noticed is that it's one boy hanging out with a group of all females. Though some may consider this odd, I've seen this happen frequently. For my middle school years, I hanged out with mostly girls while in my high school years I hang out with mostly guys now (though it is mixed). This show manages to hit close to home.

Ryuguu Rena.
Simply because Nakahara Mai pulled an amazing job with Bi-polar Rena during Onikakushi-hen. Reminds me of the good ol' days of crazy Mai in Mai-Hime :heh:

Frederica *cough* I mean Furude Rika ftw \o/
For me, it was really a tough choice between Rena and Rika. Rena is a really strong-willed, perceptive (to lies :heh:) and sharp girl, but Rika is certainly no less smarter than her. Her みー and にぱ~☆ is just "かぁいい~", and she certainly knows how to fully make use of that. I love her ability to write poems as well... you can tell that there is just so much depth to her by looking at the poems.

No not really... there isnt any ACTUAL EVIDENCE anywhere that makes that link, meaning it's not even a fact. It's purely based on speculations and your personal opinion. That's how I want to interpret the poems anyway... though I do recall Sushi-Y mentioning somewhere about Ryukishi07 denying the connection in the Fanbook(?). It's kinda interesting though if you try to interpret the two names that way /o/ Well I will put them in spoiler tags just in case then

Furunde Rika for me!!!shes cute and sweet!
Rena :D What's not to like about her? Either in Oyashiro-sama or detective mode, she stills rules :D She's cute, and I really like her clothes :D Her cleaver design is nice, and her OP appearance is disturbing yet beatiful.
Rena

As great as all the characters are, for me it was always going to be a choice between Rika and Satoko. It was a hard choice, but in the end I settled on Rika. Why? Well... because I accidentally clicked on "Vote Now" instead of "View Poll Results", and I happened to have her selected at the time. :/
I'm pretty sure I would have settled on her in the end though, so no harm done. As great as Satoko is, and as much as I'm sure I'll love her development as Tatarigoroshi-hen continues, Rika is (IMO) unbearably cute. Sure, Mion has her dere side, Rena... is Rena, and Satoko has her pointy tooth, her energy and all the things Sushi-Y mentioned... but how can they beat this?:
http://img107.imageshack.us/img107/9979/nyaanyaa9dh.png
Also the "Fight-o!" not long after that. Too cute. ^^;
Then there's her more serious and mature side, also well displayed in that same scene. She seems older than her years sometimes, and quite mysterious. (Although that's to be expected about the characters in a story like this, I think she has an aura of mystery about her personality which would be retained even in a different setting.) She's the character that intrigues me most, so combine that with the cuteness and I'm looking forward to seeing more of her.
Oooh tough choice!
Yes, yes, I too will regret it later, but let me give mad props to our bad-assed, softer sided Yakuza leader, confident enough to pack a toy pistol and play board games with the younger kids, geeky enough (to pack a toy pistol and play board games), and girly enough too poof into SD mode when embarrased.
Yes, the scene that's Lemonhead's avatar completely won me over!
I think though, that as the story unfolds I may have to swing back to Rena - my heart went out to her standing in the rain, plus she has super detective powers and a HUGE POINTY AXE, which you know are two important selling points. (^_^)

a...ahem.
:heh:*fears Sushi-Y's confidence about us regretting not having voted for Satoko*:heh:.....:upset:
Well, it's my policy to not vote untill I have seen a series to its end. I just watched the first two episodes of tatarigoroshi and I have come to feel so painfully sorry for Satoko, and then I see in this thread that Satoko only has 3 votes so far doesn't help things at all...OMG teh pains...:upset:
Satoko is indeed a very perfect little sister type of character, loveable pointy tooth, cute variant of oujosama laughter oh-hohoho, and she's a headband girl to top it off  *will always  headband girls like Kaede, Akari and Satoko* (from shuffle and to heart)
I can't help having this protective feeling towards her, and the fact that she's trying so hard just boosts that feeling, I really wish I had a second vote. For what it's worth I would almost surely vote for Satoko if I had a secondary vote.
I also like Rika, she also a very perfect little sister, miiii :hearts:. I'm looking forward to her chapters.
Rena :D What's not to like about her? Either in Oyashiro-sama or detective mode, she stills rules :D She's cute, and I really like her clothes :D Her cleaver design is nice, and her OP appearance is disturbing yet beatiful.

her Usoda! and the way she tried to knock open keiichi's door -> instant *fear*/:heart:

and of course, her cleaver -> instant flawless victory noble phantasm
(rivaled only by Kaede's Legendary Boxcutter of course:p)
Rena for teh instant win!
I haven't voted yet due to my policy but as it is now i already :fear:/:heart: Rena to a point of no return, so you can count Rena's vote with a +1 from me untill the subs for the last episode is out.

Err...
This is a little hard. ><
But I'd probably say Mion. She's outgoing, fun, loud, competitive, and sort of deranged. (coughWatanagashi-hencough) I love her character. And it doesn't hurt that her seiyuu is Yukino Satsuki. (Yoruichi!! :D)
I didn't really like Rena at first because she seemed like a bit of an airhead... but then when she switched to her Oyashiro-sama mode, I realized there was more to her than her cute "kana~kana"... in fact, the "kana~" started to sound creepy after a while. :heh:
Oh, and I have to say that Rika is awesome too. She seems innocent and caring, but also ambiguously mysterious at the same time... is there more to her? Most likely. Seeing as the last three arcs have covered each of the girls respectively, the next arc will probably focus on Rika.
Also, props to Keiichi for being an unconventional harem lead. He's crazy enough to kill people.
Ahh! I'm starting to get Higurashi deprival! (Waits patiently for next episode...)
~ Noodlehead
Its more or less a tie for me between Rena and Mion, however, I would say Rena edges out to the front a bit more. Theirs just something about all of Rena's various traits that seem to grab me a little more than Mion's.

I voted in this poll much earlier on (probably in the first 4-6 eps.) but after 13 episodes so far, my favorite character would still have to be Rena. She just seems to be a very well-rounded character and I like that she's cute, smart and occasionally psycho :). I'm really liking all the characters overall though and after this arc, I'm starting to like Keiichi and Satoko (maybe my 2nd favorite character) a bit more. Also, for some reason, even though I thought Keiichi got a little dumber in each arc, I'm starting to like him a bit more each time . I can't quite explain that.

Oh man. Rena or Shion... Rena or Shion...
Shion has the waitress costume. Plus her shy-yet-blatantly-flirty personality is full of win.
Rena has the giant knife. And her 'Hau~' and 'kana kana.' And landfill-diving for Colonel Sanders is made of so much awesome I thought my head would explode.
Oh, and then there's Rika with her 'Nipa~' which is the single most addictive noise out of the whole thing.

Keiichi: Like many of the characters in this show, he goes back and forth between being cool and being meh/irritating. That scene where he killed Satoko's uncle was made out of pure win, but then his stupidity during the first "chapter" and his lashing out at Shion... not so cool.
Rena: I don't get why she's so popular... her "posessed" self is cool, but it doesn't show up anywhere near often enough to really effect my opinion of her. She's normally pretty boring, and her cutegasms aren't anywhere near as cute as Kureha's. As things stand, she's the most forgetable out of the main six, IMO. If she'd kept the same constant cute-to-creepy character that she had during the first few episodes, she'd probably be my favorite behind Mion. Too bad.
Mion: My favorite Higurashi character. I dunno... I just always like the kind, energetic, playful characters, especially when they have a serious competent side to them. From what we've seen so far, Mion fits that bill perfectly. (except for when she was acting weird during the first arc...)
Satoko: She really annoyed me at first, but I kinda felt sorry for her once her backstory was revealed. She's only had one annoying moment since... She's alright.
Rika: Adorable. She even gives Rico from Gunslinger Girl and Shinobu from Love Hina a run for their money in cuteness. (ni-pah!)
Shion: Good character turned failure. She was my favorite character behind Mion at first, and she might have even surpassed her there for a bit at the beginning of this last ark, but as soon as I realized that it was regular Shion acting on her rage out of her own free will and not some posessed/coerced Mion that had killed Rika...
Satoshi: He reminds me of Tsukasa from .hack//SIGN... and he fails almost as hard. I say almost because he stood up for Satoko.
I don't really have much to say about the rest of them, other than that most of the other semi-major characters aside from "Onibaba" are pretty likable.
Edit: And to everyone who can't decide between the twins... VOTE FOR MION! She has more votes, and we need to have at least one of the Sonozaki sisters surpass Rena!

Furude Rika
Sonozaki Shion

Ryugu Rena wins first place with her kawaii 'kana? kana?' with a dash of her 'gomenasai! X1000' and a whole smattering of 'Usoda! Usoda! USODA!!!'.
Shion wins second place with her <stab> 'Dekita!!'.
Ahhh, Psycho-moe... ^_^
But to be fair, I also loved Rena when she was her sane, smart and logical self during the second and second to the last arc, as it was a nice foil to her crazy self in the other arcs.

QFT.
Satoko is still far from being my favorite character though but I definitely don't hate her like I do with Shion after that last arc :frustrated:. Rena is still my favorite ever since the first two arcs (this arc pushes up her favorability rating for me even further :)) and I do not anticipate changing my mind by the end of the series. Rika would be in second place due to her overall cuteness/mysteriousness and episode 20. I like Keiichi and Mion a lot too, although I didn't particularly like the way he acted in the last arc either and my admiration for him dipped a bit :(. I'm liking him again in this arc though. Overall, I'd say that I really love the cast of Higurashi. They're easily amongst my favorites out of all the anime I've watched.
It is quite unfortunate that the anime does not get into Minagoroshi or Matsuribayashi - Shion would've been much more popular if people could see how much she COULD care towards her friends.

Wasn't Shion on 6th place on the popularity poll done after Minagoroshi anyways?
At least she's on 4th place on this poll... even if it is for the wrong reasons :heh:

heh, If they did Minagoroshi & Matsuribayashi, I think people will be having problems deciding which Sonozaki they like better: Mion, Shion, or Akane.
Seriously, MILF Moe~ +++ I love all her encounters with Oishi.
She's definitly their mother :heh:

Anyway, as I said before, Satoko seems to be the only character who is completely innocent. This doesn't mean that she's my favourite character... I'm still undecided on that. I'm liking everyone but the Sonozaki's actually.

Shion is 2nd after Rena in my own estimation.

Well, the thing for me was that I never liked Shion even in the beginning when she first showed up in ep. 5. Sadly, melonpan does not work on girls. :p After ep. 9, I realized most of the events was caused by Shion, not Mion. Then when I saw Meakeshi hen, I disliked her even more. So, I never liked her once in the series... except that time in ep. 22 when she saw Rena and was fooling around with Kasai. She's better when she's not insane and emo.
I voted Mion. Shion is just... um, too insane for me. I kinda liked her at first when I still didn't know that she was so messed up.
Keiichi is also a favourite. He's kind of normal compared to all the psycho girls around him.
I would like to say that of all favorite character polls - for this to be the one that's not multiple choice is really painful. I think I'm going to vote for Rena - at the end of the day Satoko makes this choice especially tough - her ojousama laugh (my favorite thing about any character) is verrrry good, and her snaggly tooth (another one of my favorite character features) shows her devious side quite well; however, Rena's ~kana and kawaiigasms put her just that little bit ahead.

Wow...so many votes for Rena.
I waited to vote to see how much could Keiichi's character develope. It did a lot.
You know, just occasionally, with all the emo expressions Shion was putting on during Meakashi-hen, there seemed to me to be just an air of conflict in some of them.... The one at the beginning of episode 21 when she's on the phone, she's thinking one thing and her eyebrows are knotted in a "what the hell am I doing?" kind of way. But then, nonverbal cues were never my strong point. :)

Furude Rika!
I like the mystique about her. And also, I like her "tragic" story the best. I mean, all the other characters are tragic and perhaps even more so in some cases(Satoko...), but I like Rika because hers is a more low-key and less overt tragedy story. You see one little cry for help in one episode. I almost cried when I heard her say that she didn't want to die. And the rest of the time she bears it with a smile. You almost wouldn't know her situation if it wasn't for those 2 little episodes. Just that one scene after seeing her for the past 13 episodes was pretty powerful.
Also, the power associated with her. There's obviously more to her than meets the eye. Perhaps she's a legit reincarnation of Oyashiro-sama, who knows right?(yeah, some people DO know. But shut up anyway!) But anyway, despite all that, she seems to be a very kind-hearted and understanding girl to her friends.
Also, the confession scene in Watanaghi-hen where K1 talks about how he went into the shrine. I loved that part because after re-watching it, there's just something unique about the feeling of having Rika basically say "I've got your back" in that mature voice. I mean, after all the time of having Oyashiro-sama drove into your brain as powerful and deadly, and here you have the representative for her saying something like that. It's a pretty interesting feeling.
Of course, it didn't turn out too well, but... anyway. Yeah. In short: FURUDE RIKA KICKS YOUR ASS
Oh, and did I mention ni-pa and mi~? Oh yeah, +1000 points
Now that the anime has ended, this is a thread dedicated to character discussions and a limited poll entry for major characters, AFTER you've seen through all the episodes.
As in the previous poll, I have selected the five+one major characters for the polls.

Rena is gonna dominate again. It's hard to resist her.
If I had to put the characters in order from most liked to least, it'd be:
Rena
Mion
Rika
Keiichi
Shion
Satoko
I tried explaining why but I couldn't. I have a hard time putting my feelings into words. One thing I can tell you: Satoko is at the bottom because she's too bratty and her obsession with "nii nii" doesn't help either.

My order is:
Rika
Rena
Keiichi
Mion
Satoko
Shion
It really is hard to put into words why I like the characters, but Rika is my favourite because of her Mii's, Nipa-'s and the mysterious atmosphere around her, especially from the TIPS from Himatsubushi and Tsumihoroboshi.
I just came in to vote for Rena. But somehow I couldn't resist to vote for Rika-chan... What's wrong with me? Some sort of catgirl fetish? :heh: I really tried to vote for rena, but i can't :D
So... Rrrrika.
Rena
Shion

I voted for Mion... She's kept the #1 position for me since episode one. <3 I generally know who I'll like most and who I wont like from the beginning of things... (not that there aren't exceptions)
My list of liking characters goes like this:
#1- Mion
#2- Everyone else (Main characters that is... since there are a few minor I dislike, like Rina, Teppei, etc...)
The characters are the most important part of anything for me, after all. <3 And Higurashi has one of the best, if not THE best, cast I've ever known.

Up until Meakashi-hen, my favorite was Mion, hands down. Of course I was late on starting the series so I watched all the way up to 12 in one day so I didn't have time to think about stuff and what not. Anyway, back on topic, after Meakashi-hen, Shion just shot up my list to number one, and now she's in second/first cause I'm horribly indecisive. Anyway, my list
1. Keiichi and Shion
2. Rika and Mion and Satoko
3. Ooishi and Satoshi
4. All other people
See, not very decisive :heh:
EDIT: Graaaaah I change my mind, Shion is number one up with Keiichi XD;

Although I liked Rena for much of the series, after everything is said and done, I seem to like Mion the most (not sure why :p). If all of Keiichi's "KOOL" modes were shown, I have a suspicion I'd like him the most, but without the KOOL mode and the monologues, he's kind of shallow =\
1. Mion
2. Rena
3. Keiichi
4. Rika
5. Satoko
6. Shion

2. Rika - too much Nii-pah!'s!
3. Keichii - movin' on up

5. Satoko - didn't have enough attention
6. Shion - what's with the Satoshi-kun shit?

1. Rena - Need I say more? Look to Tsumihoroboshi-hen!
2. Keiichi- This guy earned my respect in Onikakushi-hen and his roles in all the subsequent arcs have proven that there's more to him than simply "going psychotic/insane'.
3. Rika- Although not the protagonist, she's the sympathetic star. Adorable and, at times, freakishly mature, she's a lovable character and it makes me angry to think someone would want to kill her.
4. Satoko- I wasn't too fond of her before but I loved her laugh; the manga really helped me like her a lot more, since her "trap" fetish wasn't explained until Tsumihoroboshi-hen. Her conviction in Meakashi-hen was respectable, too.
5. Mion- She's pretty plain. A nice, sincere girl; but beyond that, there's really nothing much to her!
6. Shion- I hate Shion. An overblown infatuation over a guy who might not be dead lead to the deaths of six other people; major fail.

A small point:
After watching all of the anime, we know that Rika is faking her cuteness all the time... she is in fact extremely old (hundreds of years?). We also know Satoko is the master of manipulation and traps. I don't know about others, but this kind of lowers my view on both of these people, because they seem to be living a big lie their entire life. Rika is just acting cute all the time to manipulate people right? Oh well, if I don't consider such details, I like them more, but if I do think about it... I like them less than Shion :/ It might be more excusable with Satoko, since we never know straight up if she's manipulating everyone (and it's assumed that she isn't) but in Rika's case we KNOW she's just acting in every arc...

Uh,
You couldn't possible understand the mental exhaustion Rika's probably gone through, stuck in a child's body for a hundred years. Even then, it's impossible for her to have held up such an immature act for so long without people close to her noticing; in all odds, how she's acting is her own honest sincerity; she still loves her friends even if they end up killing/killed, and I don't think she could lie to them (with lying being a theme in Higurashi) for so long.

I'm not talking about totally faking her personality, but it's obvious she has another "side" to her when her voice becomes more somber/mature. I'm just saying her cute factor with the mii's and the niipa's is probably an act, and that seems to be what draws most people in :P I'm not saying I don't sympathize with her, just pointing something out...
I STILL like Shion the best XD She was totally crazy, but I still love her :3
1. Shion- Hey, I'd probably kill if I was that unstable too .-. Losing the person I love and being paranoid that my family had something to do with it, hell, I'd be pissed D: Though her actions were totally rash, I can understand where she's coming from. I see the good in her, it's just that Satoshi made her nuts ;p Love makes you do crazy crap that it does(Hi Kenshin! lol).
2. Mion- Twins, yes? She's good hearted, I like her but for some reason, not as much as Shion o_O; Yeah, don't ask why :p Not much to say about her...well actually...she's the more stable one XD
3. Rika- My friend keeps on obsessing over her, I think it rubbed off on me now. She's cute and stuffs. And when she gets all mature and stuffs, her voice is total MOE~<3
4. Rena- She's awesome with giant knives :D
5. Keiichi- Dood, it's Keiichi, I'd have him be 4 but like, ladies 1st y'know? But still, this guy is pimp haha. Not much to say about him, but he's cool :3
6. Satoko- Out of em, I still like Satako the least even if all that crap happend to her DX I feel sorry for her, but there's just something I don't like about her :o
Oishi is like my least favorite in the whole show. Friggin' fat, annoying, and nosey. If the killer lolis wanna kill each other, LET THEM BE! :x

Yeah, I feel the same way too and that's unfortunate. Although she has some qualities that I like, she is probably the least developed of the main characters in the anime. She's occasionally pretty cute though, notably in episode 25, but she is still not my favorite character by a long shot but definitely not my least favorite either. That award goes to Shion, easily.
I haven't voted yet but after I watch the last episode (while keeping my expectations extremely low :(), I think I'm almost 100% sure that I'm still going to vote for Rena in the end. It's kind of hard to find one quality that I don't like about her at this point.

1. Keiichi: He is K1 after all. But still, I'd rather tie him with Rena.
1. Rena: My greatest love. When she wants to take it home, I want to take her home.
2. Rika: So moe it hurts. I just hope Mai pulls a "Mi~" on us, and I will happily leave to the afterlife.
3. Satoko: Damn, she got the lolicon and siscon out of me ;_;
4. Shmion: I'd normally got with shy Mion, but a cunning Shion is fine too.
Just to clarify: I don't like to catalog them, because there always is a last place. Then I'd rather put them all on the first place.
Between Mion, Shion, K1, and Rena it's a four-way tie for me. I guess that shows this series has some awesome character depth for all its main players.

After Onikakushi-hen it was:
1 Rena
2 Everyone else
Didn't really change much until the answer arcs started. Then I became really fickle. There was a period where Mion was my favorite and a period where Satoko was. After Tsumihoroboshi-hen though, my list is:
1 Keiichi- This guy used to just kinda bug me by being really stupid... though, once I read some of the manga I realized that he only gives that impression in the anime. He has just too many cool moments, especially in Tsumihoroboshi-hen. He even saved Rena!!!! (well kinda :P)
2 Rena- She's sugoku kaai~~ and she's got incredibly good taste in both clothes and murder weapons :heh:
3 Satoko- Helped *a lot* that I read some of the manga... where she's a lot more developed. I love the fights that she and K1 get into over her pranks. And that one tooth thing just gets me...
4 Rika- She manages to be #4 by sheer cuteness alone. Mii~~
5 Mion- Gotta love her enthusiasm. She's pretty hot (at least when well animated) And I love how she calls Keiichi "Kei-chan".
6 Shion- I'm pretty neutral towards Shion. Maybe I'll change my mind when I get to Meakashi-hen in the manga.
This was a difficult list to make. I love all 5 of the main characters so much. Any one of them could easilly be a "favorite character" if they weren't put up against such strong competition.

Well, for one, I think Rika has two personalities "Furude Rika and Frederica are different" (http://forums.animesuki.com/showpost.php?p=619582&postcount=10).
In fact though, every one of the main characters is living a lie. They're all acting like everything is fine, when in fact they all have dark pasts. Rena had the baseball bat incident back at her old school. Satoko had her parents die (in fact, I think she's involved in that too) and then there's the thing with her brother which she blames herself for. Mion is deeply involved with the yakuza. At the very least we know that she had her sister's finger nails ripped out. Rika/Frederica lives a repeating nightmare and can't stop it. Keiichi used to shoot pellet guns at little girls for kicks... And there could very easilly be a lot more to many of these stories.
In episode 25, K1 admits to his past. Rika, Satoko and Mion all hint to also having things that they don't want to talk about of their own... but that what is important isn't what they've done in the past, but who they are now.
I don't think that it is manipulation at all. I think that everyone is just trying to be who they want to be. Satoko's traps and pranks are for fun; I think she really loves all of her friends and that her traps are a clumsy expression of that. Rika/Frederica too. In episode 15, she says that all she wants to do is live happily with her friends. She loves her friends and does not want to burden them with something she thinks they can't do anything about. Instead she likes being cute and brightening peoples' lives. The same goes for Rena, K1 and Mion too. They're just trying to live a happy life.

You have all these questions regarding other characters, but you don't ask them in the "Your Qs Answered" thread? Rena and her baseball bat incident at her former school is an excellent question. As with every other truths, that is just an "one-sided" explanation given by Oishi to Kei. Why not ask such questions in that thread? You'll get a different perspective on things when you hear it from both sides of the channel.

You know I'm going to say Mion. But what clinched it was the episode where
Mion and Shion each had Keiichi by the arm and were sort of fighting over him
and Shion basically did her best to make Mi jealous and she went totally nuts
talking a mile a minute telling her friends to set the traps and do this and that
and it was HYSTERICAL the voice she used at that point. I also liked it when
Shion said "so should we have a contest to see who wins his favor" and she
absolutely freaked out.
Normally she's just a shy girl I suspect, she sometimes comes across as
a hardcase because of the position she is in but I suspect she longed for
normalcy.
Shion - too mental for me.
Rika - interesting. Of all the characters I could sit down and offer some
advice for changing some outcomes.
Satoko - the girl needs a vacation - the show just seemed to want to
kick her in the teeth.
Keiichi - the guy is reasonably cool but he's dumb for the first third of
the episodes and then in the end he wises up a bit. Oh well.
Rika.
I don't know why, but Tsumihoroboshi just made me not like Rena as much as I used to. You'd think it would, but I just thought Rena was acting really stupid after episode 24. I still think she's extremely interesting, but I just didn't really feel sympathy for her.
Shion is next. I really felt bad for her, and thought her arc was the best out of the series.
Keiichi got on my nerves in the question arcs, but he wasn't too bad I guess. But why the hell did his character seem to change so much in different arcs? Yeah yeah, I know he's the same person but he seemed to change so much.
Poor Satoko. I know her situation and all the hardships in her life, but I don't know. Her arc kinda sucked, to be honest and other than that, she never really did anything. Onikakushi and Watanagashi barely had her in it, Himatsubishi didn't even feature her, and she didn't really do anything other than give Keiichi the bat in Tsumihoroboshi.
Mion is the most mentally stable, but I thought she was kind of boring. She had everything, and didn't really have a terrible past or anything.

Personally for me, the order goes like this (regardless of anime or game):
1. Rena: She had always been at the top, neck-to-neck with Keiichi for me ever since I started on this series. But after Tsumihoroboshi her points propelled her all the way up as my favourite character for the series. If I'm to pick one of the characters from the series whom I can be close friends with, I wouldn't hesitate to pick Rena. Kaaii + cool detective + cunning killer + Renapan > all! ;)
2. Keiichi: Whether as a main character or not, Keiichi had always been able to somehow make an influence throughout the different chapters of the story (良い影響悪い影響はともかく:heh: ), but I guess the main reason why he ranked so high in my list is because alot of his beliefs and attitude towards life is quite similar to what I hold personally. People who had played through Minagoroshi would also know that he's quite the leader type too. その説得力や行動力はお見事でした。「口先の魔術師」は伊達じゃないってことですね。:D
3.Mion/Rika: A tie. I couldn't really decide who I like more. Mion is probably the most innocent out of all the main characters in terms of her past, it was a shame that she had to be born in the Sonozaki family, and to carry the responsibility as the next leader even though she was clearly not the right choice. Rika on the other hand has my full sympathy for her situation. The description of her tragedy in Minagoroshi, despite its supernatural element, had been very realistic.
5. Satoko: Don't misunderstand. Placing her last out of all the members of the club by no way means that I don't like her. In fact in terms of adorableness alone I think she surpasses Rika and maybe even Rena. But I think given her age compared to the other 4 (take note that Rika is more than 100 years old), Satoko is unfortunately the one who had the least character development (Actually Mion didn't really get much too, but not as little as Satoko in terms of my opinion). But alas, I take my hat off for all the bravery she had shown to me.
6. Shion: What turned me off the most wasn't the series of murders she committed (I belong to one of those who understands at least partly of why she did what she did), but the way she committed them. Murder under the name of revenge, I can still tolerate due to what she had been through. But torture is another thing altogether, particularly in Satoko and Rika's case (we may not have seen how Rika was killed in Watanagashi, but it was gruesome enough for Rika to commit suicide in Meakashi).
As for the others, I think I'll just post the list here:
7. Ooishi: He may look cold on the outside, but I like his "always consider all possibilities" attitude and his dedication towards his duty.
8. Irie: Even if it's purely for his maid fetish lol.
9. あぅあぅあぅあぅ + Rika: You might wonder why Rika-chama is listed twice, but I just don't see things working without them being together. :heh:
10. くすくすくすくす (ROFL): Made to the top 10 for being able to make me hate a character so much in such a short time. :D
11. Akasaka: Oh my god, the first time I posted this I totally forgot about him. :heh: He was actually higher in the rank before, but dropped because of his uselessness despite the expectations I placed on him.

I like them all (I didn't like Satoko that much in onikakushi until I watched tatarogoroshi), but Honestly, Keiichi is my favourite. Why? because he always lose the games and most penalties involve cosplay.
Kill-me cutes (or why I like them all):
In manga version, watanagashi chapter 1 and 2, K1 cosplays maid and kitty-schoolgirl-swimsuit combination, and I just WANNA TAKE HIM HOME~~!! XD (I swear if there was another guy in Higurashi that I really liked I would pair him with him and make K1 uke) he's the most suitable for costumes, period.
Rika's mi's and nipa's kill me with their cuteness, I also want to take her home whenever she does that ^^
Mion and her "call me ojisan" make me want to hang out with her, she's feminine but not to the extreme, I think she would be a great heir for her family.
Satoko doesn't have much of a spotlight until tatarigoroshi, and damn does she shine there. Her strength to try to overcome things is, at her age, something admirable. (and the manga version shows lots of K1/satoko moments, it's freaking cute @_@)
Rena and her "omochi kaeri~" ooze cuteness (but not sick-cute), she's the cutest after K1!!!! And also she kicks so much ass, actually he can kick K1's ass since she's stronger (watanagashi manga ^^). Besides i like that kind of personality split "saint/badass" she has.
I know I said cute a lot.

Well, I suppose it was off topic, but my post here was mostly a reply to another post.
The reason I haven't visited the questions answered thread is because I still plan on seeing/reading/playing the last two arcs and I don't want to be spoiled just yet.
Satoko became my number 1 after Meakashi-hen, Satoko so strong for nii nii  . She also gains cuteness points for her brat attitude and her fang :heh: . *wants to pat Satoko's head*

it is kinda hard to decide seen as all the charas are so lovable (except k1) but ive made up my mind to be shion...
reason ~ she was treated like the "crap" twin and literally sent somewhere else so that mion could be the head...tradgic no? but she didnt really mind
next came to her falling in love with satoshi and the "redemtion" costing her some nails...tradgic no? but she didnt mind cause it was for satoshi's safety...
here comes the bomb shell...satoshi still went "missing"
now that is tradgic therefore shion deserves to be recognised ^_^ even tho she did go crazy she was one hell of a lover :p

1. Rena - uhh, psycho? She wins over Shion though because she's not ALL psycho-kill, but also psycho about cute...
2. Shion - probably more psycho than Rena, but only has one psycho mode, so...
3. Keiichi - psycho, but not psycho enough, since he seemed pretty sane for all but 2 arcs.
4. Rika - psychoer than Keiichi, with her 'other self' and all, but since she didn't actually KILL anyone in the anime, she loses to K1.
5. Mion - pretty sane, but she's one up above Satoko since she actually ripped her sister's nails off
6. Satoko - well, she's the sanest person of the bunch, so that makes her dead last in my list.

Nah, seriously, there are really cute hints and moments between K1 and Rena, Mion and Satoko, I considered every paring very cute, so I'm fine with that, there are enough bishies outside the Higurashi series XD

I hate placing characters in a list of favorites, well when in an anime and such where the characters are all just so great!! Last time I voted Rika but now Keiichi has sort of jumped and tied with her, so I can give no one a first place. Their all great characters in their own ways.
Rika's adorableness to her mysterious other personality,
Keiichi and his will to save his friends, I used to think he was like this unstable wimp in the first chapter but now after seeing the rest of the arcs, he is pretty darn cool to me ^_^'
Next would be Rena, sorta like me when it comes to cute things >.<... It scares me in a way... She has also proven to have a calculating mind as she had in Tataragoroshi-hen. I can't say I have a calculating mind for mystery like she did in that chapter but I sure wish I did.
Next is Mion, Mii-chan~ She is just awesome, so incredibly tomboyish yet shy and feminine on the inside, I always want for them to get their true love in the end in animes and shows.
Then Satoko, Ah so sweet in her own right and intelligent. Those traps of hers are awesome her awesome laugh and trying to (or being in cases) superior to Keiichi was just adorable. And Niinii!!! so cute!! Reminds me of when me and my little brother were younger, he ran around calling me 'Fun' since my name was too long to say. The brother sister bond that she and Keiichi forms are great, I sure hope she finds her brother some day.
Next is Satoshi himself, he did so much and tried so hard for her, I just wish I knew why he was gone and what happened to him, but I am trying to avoid spoilers to play the game >_< Must...Have...Willpower...
Then Shion finally, I didn't get as attached to her but still, I find it very impressive that she could become so attached and loyal to someone and love someone that much. If only she hadn't lost it and been driven to take it too far...
Rena still pwns....IMO of course.
Yes! Go Rena! I'm surprised Rika is up there so high, I mean she's cute and has trippy quirks, but the Sonozaki sisters and Rena are much deeper, I think.
1. Rena
2. Shion (Meakashi-hen wins)
3. Keiichi (he cries way too much though. if he wasn't always a protagonist he'd be cooler, but I know him too well...!)
4. Mion
4. Satoko
5. Rika
I guess it's probably good that I was forced to save this post locally and then post it later because I did change the order slightly as a result (of watching ep. 26)....
Edit: And yeah reading the spoiler topic doesn't make a different on my opinion of Rika personally, within the context of the show. Probably she'd be up above Mion & Satoko if they aired the other 2 arcs.

Just a dumb question...
Does Mion say her "call me ojisan" in the anime? wich ep?
I thought I've seen it only in the manga...
She doesn't say that in the anime, however there are two occasions (ep 20 and 25) where she refers to herself as that.
I want to love Mion over Shion but Shion has that psycho edge on her I find quite appealing.

1. Rena - I actually didn't like her much in Onikakushi hen because I thought she was freaky. Then after that, she began to grow on me, and after seeing the last arc, she became my favorite.
2. Keiichi - Before Rena moved up on my list, he was actually my favorite. I felt bad that a lot of the viewers were calling him stupid, though, the anime did make him rather stupid. I think the manga does a better job with his character.
3. Rika - Ahhh, she so cute! How can you not like her? Plus she has connections with... the whole curse and Oyashiro sama, making her a mysterious and interesting character.
4. Mion - Don't have much to say. I like her and think she's a lot better than her sister. I especially liked her during Meakashi hen.
5. Sakoto - I feel bad for her, but the anime didn't developed her as much as the other characters.
Everyone else
Shion - Okay, I think she's fine and I actually like her when she's not all... psycho. When she's all insane and on her killing spree, I dislike her a lot.
Overall, I think Higurashi has an awesome cast of characters, even though must of them are insane, but I enjoyed watching their interaction with each other.

Rena - still is my fav character, she totally freaked me out in Onikakushi-hen but she was still kawaii too, the needles in the rice ball was awesome!
Rika- omg kawaii!! Even though she's hundreds of years old and possessed, she's adorable!
Mion/Shion - Im pairing as two since most of the time I thought Mion was actually Mion and not Shion...I remember saying in the 2nd arc that Mion was creepy me out but now its obvious that was Shion. Totally awesome job by the anime doing that, I was fooled!
Kei - I loved him in the Onikakushi-hen since he was being targeted but I still have to put Mion/Shion above him cuz they have the creepy factor
Satoko - I hate putting her last but I found her kinda annoying, nothing against her of course.

I have to go with Shion as my favorite.
I just heavily empathized with her when I saw how her family treated her. Then I was happy to see Mion was on her side. But when she made her show the "distinction," I was rather angry and was hoping Shion would kill them all. So when she went psycho I was very happy to see it happen. The only downside of her is that she got Keiichi, if she hadn't done that, she might be one of my all time favorite characters.

+1 for Shion :D
And don't fault her for going on a rampage. How would you feel if you thought your Yakuza family (who had all but excommunicated you) was responsible for the disappearance and possible murder of your beloved?
Exactly.
We're going by the names everyone calls them and not their birth names, correct? As anyone who's read the TIPS knows, Shion's name is actually 'Mion,' but was changed when the guys doing the little doodle on the back got the twins switched and put it on the younger twin.

No, I wouldn't go on a killing rampage.
Something that's been bothering me is that everyone is thinking that Shion has to be forgiven because she loved Satoshi and the Sonozaki messed up with him and his family big time. If the reason for forgiving her is that, then you guys are totally wrong. I would never forgive someone for going on a killing rampage because the guy she has a silly crush on probably got killed. That's... wrong.
Now, why is it that we forgive Shion's sin?
It's because she wasn't herself when she did all that horrible stuff. She was under the influence of something, and that something is what made her go batshit insane. It's the same something that caused K1 to murder Rena and Mion in Onikakushi, and the same something that had Rena almost blowing up the school and killing everyone on Tsumihoroboshi. They just weren't themselves, they went crazy and couldn't help it. That's why we should forgive them.

Did you ever see Animesuki's Gosanke ever mentioning that before? Like, calling "the real Shion" as Shion and "the real Mion" as Mion? (on the context of a normal conversation, I mean)
Of course not, because it would be TOO CONFUSING.
The one we first knew as Mion, we should call her Mion. And viceversa. Or else it would be TOO DAMN CONFUSING :(

That double standard annoys me too. Maybe we need to arrange a deadmatch between crazy Rena and berserk-mode Shion to settle the score. :heh:
Shion killed innocent people, Rena did not.
Well, I doubt you think Rena would have hesitated to follow Shion's example had she gotten a chance to get close to those she thought were the masterminds behind the conspiracy. Moreover, taking innocent people as hostages is probably even more despicable than going on some misguided crusade because at least in Shion's case she thought the victims were guilty of something. So excuse me for thinking the crimes of Rena are excused by some fans because of her cuteness and moe-like behaviour and noth much else.

It's because Shion did all those things for a really stupid reason (revenge for some crush that probably didn't like her back?), while Rena was defending Hinamizawa from alien parasites... She was saving the world, man!! (okay, a little sarcasm there...)
But honestly, Shion's cheap. One shot with the stun gun, and she drags you back to her torture chamber where she does what she wants with you while you're being tied back. At least Rena gave her opponents a fighting chance...

It's not about what she had done, it's about what Shion thought she had done (being a burden on her brother and so on). It's not as if the rest of her victims were guiltier than Satoko, why single her out? I don't claim Shion was right to kill them, not at all. I just think Rena was just as ruthless, if not more.

Meh, but Rika isn't as innocent... :p
In Shion's crazy mind being a burden on Satoshi was probably just as bad or even worse offence than what the rest did, so I don't really see your point. Objectively none of the victims seemed to be guilty, and subjectively to Shion they were all guilty, so I just don't think we have to single out Satoko, except for the way she died compared with the rest.

The thing with Shion is, her problem wasn't developed as much as Rena's problem, even though Meakashi hen was 6 episodes. It just seemed really... awkward Shion sees Satoshi, he pets her on the head and disappears, then Shion believes everyone tried to seperate them, and goes off on her killing spree. And he said, what, 2 lines to her in total and he even confused her with Mion the whole time until the end.
It's like, um, you met this guy for 2 secs and you barely talked to him. Then you suddenly start killing everyone because you think your family killed him? :twitch:
And besides, we're already told that Rena had psychological problems since Onikakushi hen. Shion's was just, wham, I'm gonna kill you now because you killed someone I fell in love with after saying 2 lines to him.
I'm sure it was more developed in the actual game, but based on what happened and how her situation was rather rushed in the anime, that's what I feel towards her.

2006-10-03, 20:05
I have to agree. My friend and I simply did not get Shion's motivation at all. Her she is, here she meets Satoshi, here he says a few lines to here, here he disappears and finally she snaps and kills everyone because of it.
I simply can't see her reasoning for this and don't give me the "she's insane" excuse. Once she kills Sakoto she shows that she didn't do it for Satoshi.

She already planned to kill Rika before she did anything.
Did she? From what I got out of it, she told Rika about Keiichi and like, expected Rika to off Keiichi or something crazy like that. I dunno I'll have to rewatch it. :heh:
If we're talking the actual scene where she killed Rika, though, from what I got, Rika showed up out of nowhere as far as Shion was concerned, and it did seem like Shion really was just going to get Rika the soy sauce before Rika instigated the fight.
Looking at that, even if she planned to kill Rika later on, in that instance it started out as self denfense on Shion's part.
It's like, um, you met this guy for 2 secs and you barely talked to him. Then you suddenly start killing everyone because you think your family killed him? :twitch:
Well it WAS more than two seconds. Sure she got a crush on him right when they met, but then she called him, she helped him out with the bear, and yeah. Not much more though I suppose :heh:
And while we're on the topic of comparison, since that seems to be a "to do" thing, why not compare her to Keiichi in his two "lol killer loli" chapters? (I am aware this might be pointless but I'll go ahead and do it anyway :heh:) It's obvious Shion was being affected by something and painfully obvious Keiichi was, and he beat Rena and Mion to death. Did Rena and Mion do anything wrong? No, but that didn't stop Keiichi, because he believed they did/were going to. Yes, Keiichi thought they were trying to kill him whereas Shion wanted her warped revenge, but I think there's a point in there... somewhere. Maybe. :heh:
And then there's in the other arc. True, Keiichi was a lot closer to Satoko than Shion was to Satoshi, and yes Teppei deserved it whereas most of Shion's victims didn't, but it's still murder no matter how you look at it.
And uh, since this is probably one of the worse Shion-defenses (why she needs a defense when practically EVERYONE turns into a psycho killer at some point, I do not know) out there, I'll stop now :heh:
But anyway, yeah Rena had psycological problems before with her "I was cursed by Oyashiro-sama" bit and her parent's divorce. What about Shion? From what I can see, the majority of her family hates/really dislikes her, she got shipped off to a place she obvious hated being in, got seperated from his sister and they were obviously close before she got shipped off to that school, if their conversation when reunitied on the phone was any hint; and well, all of that stuff.
Under a spoiler for length
Now, ignoring this, let's assume both Rena and Shion were affected by whatever it was (and HEY here's a theory. Maybe whatever makes everyone go nuts is on the books Takano gives out to people).
-Shion then finds out her family and some other people knocked off someone she cares about (let's not argue whethor or not she should be allowed to like someone after only a short meeting, that won't change the fact she likes him a hell of a lot even when she's not being affected by whatever)
-Rena finds out that there are alien invader parasites being produced by the Sonozakis.
-Shion then proceeds to kill/torture everyone she believes is guilty of Satoshi's disappearance/suffering/suffering that lead to his disappearance and slowly gets more and more mad as she goes along.
-Rena holds a school hostage full of innocent people who she is only using to get what she wants, which is the investiagtion of the so called Sonozaki Conspiracy.
Yes, Rena had a "just cause" behind her but she STILL planned on killing everyone in the school if Keiichi and the rest had not intervened. Shion didn't kill anyone who was innocent, as far as her mind could see.
And whether or not you can't see the motives for Shion's actions is sort of irrelevant as SHION was the one doing them, so it'd probably be better to look from her perspective and all that junk. :heh:
So... yeah. There's my two cents :heh:

It's not so much that she's not allowed to have a crush on someone she just met. She goes from having a crush on him to full on obsession in 2.5 seconds. :p
Once again her logic falls apart. She likes Satsoshi and when she hears that it's because of his sister that he's falling apart, she decides it's a good idea to beat the hell out of his sister to teach her a lesson. I wonder why I can't believe this was a good idea? :p

I've been thinking on one part of something you mentioned in there that made me wonder.
in refference to everyone turning into a psycho killer, Mion has never lost it and killed anyone remember, in none of the arcs infact she seems like the most stable one of the bunch. Unless she has really taken part in murders and such for the Sonozaki family as the heir (which are possible but can't remember if it was ever mentioned. Rewatching the series to figure this and stuff out), but it's never been said as far as I know. Since we know it was Shion in Wantanagashi there are times when Mion has seemed a little off to Keiichi and Shion when they were losing it but It was more than likely paranoia I think from what we've seen so far. So unless suddenly a secret is revealed and Mion is like the missing murderer from the dismemberment case she doesn't seem to have gone psycho and killed anyone O.o though we know thanks to her family she has had to do things like what happened with Shion's nails. But even then she decided to share the same fate as her twin.
Thinking of it like that sorta bumps Mion up on my list a little.
And yeah I know that lacked major grammer and spelling but I'm too miffed and lazy to bother with that sort of thing at the moment. Sue me :P I'll pay you in chocolate chip cookies *nods*

yeah, I'll reply to this as this is something the anime lacked: Character Development.
Shion was in Okinomiya and been in contact with Satoshi for about 2~3 months period before she lost contact with him for a month then decided to go to the school exchanging identities with Mion.
Shion at that time only had Kasai, Mion, and her Uncle Yoshiro to talk to. So, Satoshi was the first friend she had outside of family (along Dr. Irie and the rest of his baseball team - but they only matter to her b/c Satoshi was on the team).
Just for time refference, Keiichi only moved into town less than 2 months before the events happen in Hinamizawa in 1983.
The other thing Meakashi Hen fails to explain is Shion's Curse Theory which was her logic behind her vigilante killings. Rika wasn't going to be killed unless something happend to Keiichi. Unfortunately, Rika attacked Shion first.
As for Satoko, again the anime skipped this, but in Tsumihoroboshi Hen, Rena confronts Satoko blaming her for the same reasons Shion did concerning Satoshi's disappearance (although obviously Shion takes it more personally). Satoko does accepts and acknowledges that as her sin (evident in Tatarigoroshi, Tsumihoroboshi, and Minagoroshi).

Okay, okay, I guess I'm starting to understand Shions reasoning a little more. However, it still doesn't improve my opnion of her as a character. :p
There's something still bothering me though about Shion impersonating Mion. What would she have done if Keichi and Rena had wanted to see the oni tatoo? Why once she had Keichi in the undergroud chambers did the ruse continue? She had planned on killing him right? So, what was the point in that?

She would have given up and turned herself in as they would have won the "game."
Shion wanted to be caught. At this pt after killing Satoko, she wanted for someone to tell her she was wrong and evil. The monologue here IMO was the best scene in Meakashi.
The "Game"
Shion wanted to be caught. This was a "Game" between herself and the demon inside her. Shion wanted someone to confront her as Shion, and blame her for all the wrongs she commited with no sympathy (as she herself believed she shouldn't get any for this was all her mistake). She then would have been saved from her own insanity. Otherwise if no one would step up to the plate and confront her as Shion and tell her she was wrong, she wanted to go out and do something so terrible that no one would will have any doubt or any sympahty that she is nothing but a horrid sadistic demonic monster. She did her best to hold back this demon clueing Keiichi and Rena with blantet lies which "Mion" would never say. However, in the end, the Demon won. Keiichi never figured it out. She stops short of killing him b/c Keiichi told her the truth. She wasn't "Mion," she was a Demon.
All in all, Shion realized she needed help and was crying out for it during the entire final confrontation. Just no one saw it driving her deeper in her insanity. She couldn't ask for any sympathy or felt like she deserved any because she killed Satoko betraying Satoshi.
Is there any story in which Shion is an important character and doesn't go insane? I feel like she got the short end of the stick in the anime. I mean that whole scene where Shion stood up to the Sonozakis, debating their pretty grudges with the Houjous, was just spectacular.
If there isn't a "GOOD END" for Shion yet, I hope one gets written in the extra arcs on the console game coming out.

From what I understod.., not in one of the other arcs, but it was a matter of a choice made in Meakashi-hen..
You can look up the following post that kj1980 made in the TIPS section (page 6, post #114) :

It seems that Shion though has the least stable sanity of any character in the series. Really all it takes for her to be pushed over the edge is her sister to be upset about a guy. I'm suprised she doesn't snap more often.
It's almost ironic that the most seemingly stable character is the yakuza heiress Mion.

I dunno about that. There was a lot that built up to that moment over the years... her whole family (except her mother and sister) treating her like crap, for instance. K1 flipped over seeing a girl in a farming community with a hatchet and a talk with a cop. Much less stable, methinks.
But yeah, Mion is the most stable. Rika is a close second (she's not crazy, she's just way more clued in than the rest of us ;))

You know, I actually thought that Shion was developed pretty well as a character. In my opinion, her spiral into insanity was the most convincing out of the main cast and in the end, she probably left the strongest impression on me, although not exactly a good one. I thought she was the craziest character in the entire show, but that didn't necessarily mean that I liked her. I kind of hated her .
I didn't rank my favorite characters from best to worst yet so here they are:
1. Rena
2. Rika
3. Keiichi
4. Satoko
5. Mion
6. Shion
Rena and Rika are first and second place easily. Keiichi, Satoko and Mion are about tied as my favorites. And Shion is of course dead last.
And poor Satoko, receiving just one vote :heh:.

You know, I haven't ranked my fave characters yet. So here they are:
1): Mion - Far and away my favorite character. I love her tomboy attitude and yet she still has a feminine side.
2): Sakoto - It's sad to see that she gets so little love with all the hardships she's had to endure at such a young age and still came out of it very well.
3): Rika - Was I ever blown away once I found out what her big secret is. Yet, all she really wants most is the ability to have fun with her friends. Kind of hard not to cheer for her.
4): Rena - She was much higher on my list earlier in the series, but as more was reveiled about her past, she just seems a little pathetic now,
5): Keichi - He's last in the list of main characters for me. While he got a little more interesting latter in the series, he's still quite bland to me.
6) Shion - Dispite understanding her motives better, I still have no fondness for her character at all. She tries to be all sweet and innocent, but it's all fake.

Wait... what? Most of her screentime was in a chapter was she was, well, crazy without a doubt, no need for "all sweet and innocent" there, but in her few appearances outside of Meakashi and Watanagashi, when and what about her was she "fake" ? :eyebrow:

I mean the rage she carries inside. Sure when Keichi and Rena when crazy they killed one or two people, but they were always limited to their psychoses (sp?). When Shion went nuts she killed everyone. Even when they were barely connected with her.
Then again, this could just be some resentment towards her for the way she tortured and killed Mion in those two arcs. Since Mion is my favorite character I guess I might not be able to give an impartial opinion of Shion.

But Rena would have killed an entire school full of completely innocent people if she hadn't been stopped, whereas Shion only killed people who had "wronged" Satoshi, excluding Rika, which had self defense mixed in. If Rena hadn't been stopped, her "kill count" would have been higher than Shion's.
And they were all connected to Shion, albeit through Satoshi's disappearance/suffering, which is the reason she killed them, except, again, for Rika. Meanwhile, Rena was going to kill all those kids that probably didn't even know her that well on any scale, nor did Rena hold any grudge against them, while Shion, as I said, only killed the people that, in her mind, had done wrong, from what I could tell anyway.
And I'm still confused on the "fake" part. What about her, aside from the obvious dressing up like Mion bit, was fake?
MrZombie
2006-10-05, 00:50
I've been thinking on it and maybe fake isn't the isn't the right word I'm looking for. It could be the anime's fault, but we don't really see much of Shion except when she is either really happy or completly insane.
We also know very little of any abuse she suffered in the past beyond being sent to that school, living with her parents and not with the main family and the fact that the family doesn't acknowledge her existance. For the anime I got the impression that Shion doesn't care about most of this as long she has the love of her parents, Kasai and sister.
It also doesn't help that I still am not one hundred percent clear on most of her motives in these two arcs. I can understand why Rena took the class hostage, she wanted to get her message out and something to be done about the "problem". Despite the explanations given, I still can't see why the continued need to pretend to be Mion once she had Keichi in her clutches. There is also why she went back to kill Keichi, I thought her revenge was finished once she left the torture chambers and had let him live. Also, I don't see why she wanted to continue living after all this. The whole story just seemed to have an air about that this was her final act before she killed herself to be with Satoshi.
It also doesn't help that the whole story arc didn't really have a point. There was no need for Shion to kill anyone. Satoshi ran away.
Maybe one day I'll tell you what I think of Satoshi. :p

Keiichi had nothing to do Satoshi and she tried to kill him. One could argue that she did. If he hadn't been stabbed then he would have moved away. Instead she put him in the hospital and I'm sure his weakened condition contributed to his heart failure. At the end Shion wasn't killing just to avenge Satoshi, she was killing for the fun of it. Rena had plenty of time to kill the entire school but that wasn't her intention. She was using them as a means to push start the investigation on the Sonozakis. Rena was also able to snap out of it and I don't believe it's just because Keiichi knew she was going through. He tried his best to help Shion (although he thought she was Mion) too but she stabbed him anyway. Shion isn't as stable as Rena in my opinion. The only people Rena ended up killing were scum.

Well there was that one part in Tatoriogoshi-hen (I know that's spelled wrong, it's gotta be) when she was all serious when Keiichi told her Satoshi transfered away? :x
At which point did she live with her parents? :eyebrow: From what I got, she lived at the school, with Kasai for a while and then finally by herself after Satoshi disapeared. And even if she DID seem like she was fine with it, the fact remains her family treated her like crap.
And she DID stop being Mion after she left, seeing as "Mion" was the suspect and "Shion" was the victim. But then she was hallucinating Mion/hearing her ghost, she had to go kill Keiichi to stop "Mion" and the only way to do that was to dress like Mion again. ... I think :heh:
EDIT: And as for Keiichi, wouldn't it make sense for her to go after him because he kind of instigated the whole thing by giving Rena the doll? And then she was crying when she was going to "kill" him the first time, and she did kind of let him go before she lost it and went after him again, but I think at that point she was too far gone for reasoning, really believing she had to kill Keiichi to stop Mion from haunting/somehow killing her back through the haunting. What with the "I made it in time!" bit. 'least I think that's what it was, that whole scene went by too fast in the anime.
And on Rena, yeah you're right, though I wasn't intending to say Rena was more stable than Shion because yeah, you'd be hard pressed to get more "unstable" than Shion was in Meakashi. What I guess I'm saying is that, for one, if Keiichi had been one second later as far as the bomb was concerned, even if they were for the whole investigation, all those kids, AND Rena herself, would have died and nothing would have been accomplished besides for the deaths of an entire school, despite it being for a "just cause."

Quoted for truth. The road to hell is paved with good intentions. If Shion had tried to hold so many hostages, we wouldn't have heard the end of all the complaints. But when Rena does it - it's all cool, poor girl is just fighting against the evil Sonozakis in her own way, you know...Don't get me wrong, Rena is cool but both her and Shion were more than ready to kill anyone who stood in their way. The only difference is Rena snapped out of it before getting too far.

I wasn't actually excusing Rena for taking the school hostage and trying to kill them, don't get me wrong. I'm just saying that from Rena's point of view it makes sense for her to take them hostage. She wanted something done and this was the only way she thought it could be done.
Now, just because I understand why she didn't doesn't make it the right thing to do. I just said that I can see why she did it compared to why Shion tried to kill Keichi.
Keiichi was Mion's Satoshi, I think that's good enough reason for the crazy Shion to kill him.
Quote from the tips thread (Shion refers to her sister as "Shion", you probably know why) :
...I’ll kill him kill him, Satoshi-kun’s revenge Satoshi’s revenge, ...he is the person Shion likes, I hate Shion, kill him and show Shion, take that taaaaaaaaaaaaakkkkkkkkee, ... gu…f......................!
The surrounding gravity swirls around me.

Quote from the tips thread (Shion refers to her sister as "Shion", you probably know why) :
I think she just wanted a reason to finish the job. Mion was already dead, she already lost Keiichi. There no need to try and kill him.
Reason? She was raving mad, you cannot expect totally rational thinking. Her sister having a crush on Keiichi seemed like more than good enough reason at that point, never mind Mion being already dead. In any case for her Keiichi was more guilty than those kids in the school for Rena, that's what I am trying to say.

I think she just wanted a reason to finish the job. Mion was already dead, she already lost Keiichi. There no need to try and kill him.
Besides for the fact that an insane person's reasons probably aren't the best "reasons" you want, remember, Shion thought she was being "haunted" by Mion before she actually went to Keiichi, and maybe killing Keiichi seemed like the way to silence "Mion's ghost." Besides for being nuts then, she was also, again this is just what I could tell, really really scared too, which probably killed off most of her remaining rational thinking. Killing Keiichi probably seemed like the only way out of that, and adding in what Matrim said about Keiichi being Mion's Satoshi and Shion hating Mion, it wouldn't be hard to see that Shion would want him dead too.

Well, for starters he went and abandonded Sakoto, possibly leaving her with the uncle before the uncle too off as well. It isn't clear in the anime just when the uncle took off after Satoshi killed the aunt, but this isn't the only issue I have with him.
Do you know of any other character who has influinced a series so much, simply by being absent? He was major fodder for Keichi's paranoa in the first arc, the cause of Shion's murderous rampages in the second and fifth arcs and the reason Sakoto puts up with her uncle's abuse in the third.
Simply put, I think he's a coward that is thought of way too fondly by the cast.
I'm voting for Satoko... She's just so pure, innocent, and strong-willed--makes you just want to cheer her on, you know? Makes you wish she has a good ending and things like that.

Well, Satoshi did do other things besides being absent and killing the aunt. From what I got from the flashbacks and people's general attitude of him, he was a really nice guy and a pretty good friend, and a great brother. He took a lot of abuse from his family, and added onto that abuse protecting Satoko, and from the looks of it didn't really complain about that (if killing one of the abusers doesn't count as complaining :p) and it is my firm belief he didn't disappear of his own will. There was the scapegoat of the drug addict protecting him, he had Satoko and no abusive relatives to live with anymore, and heck, a possible girlfriend waiting for him. WHY, when everything was starting to "look up," would he run away?
MrZombie
2006-10-05, 21:37
Why would he be forced to leave though? From the anime I got the impression that the Sonozaki family "found" the scape-goat for him. And why kill the aunt? From the anime and TIPS it seems that the aunt was mostly responsible for the emotional abuse, while the uncel was the one that physically abused them. (Sakoto at least, I don't think they ever really mentioned any physical abuse towards Satoshi)

I'd be wary about judging him when we don't yet know why, or indeed if, he ran away.
We don't even know for certain whether Satoshi was the one who killed the aunt, let alone why he disappeared. It's a bit difficult to judge a character with so much unclear facts about him.

It was not shown yet whether the reason for his disappearance was because he ran away after he killed his aunt. Furthermore, suppose the scapegoat was arranged by Sonozaki, how would Satoshi had known about it since it happened after he disappeared?
Why kill the aunt? Because she's the one who was largely responsible for Satoko's abuse a year ago prior to her death. The uncle was only home occasionally, the effect of his abuse on Satoko was alot less than those inflicted by the aunt, who practically does it every night.

While that's cretainly true that we don't know if he ran off or was forced out. The main problem about that though is who would want him gone and what they hoped to gain from it.
And yes, I did forget about the fact that the uncle was gone most of the time.

When ranking the characters to choose my favourite, I had two different criteria in mind: 1) how much their story (including TIPS and Puzzle Pieces) affected me, and 2) how much I liked thier personality/mannerisms/appearence/etc. I used method #1 for voting, and choose Satoko for my favorite, because her story pushed a lot of my buttons. Second after her is Keiichi, because he started out as a shallow asshole and bully, but turned himself around when he realized how far he'd fallen. If I had been using criteria #2, I'd have chosen Rena as my favourite, for her cheerfulness, energetic cuteness and slight eccentricity, and Rika as runner up, for her moe cuteness.
On the issue of why Shion stabbed Keiichi at the end, from the TIPS I get the impression that towards the end her insanity had progressed to the point that she thought she was actually her sister, so that might have something to do with it. (Or maybe I got it wrong, and Shion just started calling herself Mion at the end because she was the one who actually had the tatoo).

Shion is Mion, and Mion is Shion. The genius the Sonozaki's picked up to do that tattoo accidently drew it on the wrong kid, so they switched the names on the birth certificates :heh:
From what I gathered, Shion killed K1 because the guilt of killing her sister had become too much for her.

Rena is definitely eye-candy. Everything about her is cute, which makes me want to take her home. :D
Rena wins. And I think that her "I want to take it home" is unnecessary, too. Just think what she has going for her:
1. Onikakushi-hen. Incredible bravery aside (as most other characters had the chance to show that, too), she gives the ultimate show of faith in all of Higurashi. Calmly waiting with outstretched arms (almost certainly after Keiichi had already killed Mion) as her friend prepares to finish her off. Believing in him, speaking to him until the last second. I doubt she even blinked when the strike came.
2. Tsumihoroboshi-hen. She is willing to kill two people to protect her vulnerable father. Many people here call this evil, regardless of her motives, but there is really no need to defend her. She crushes this argument herself; while it was her conscious decision, she openly declares it to be a sin ("Alone, I would not be able to bear this cross"). Her perception of good and evil isn't as bad as people seem to think.
Later on, we don't really know what she sees (think about Keiichi's visions), but you have to remember her paranoia. Even so, she sacrifices the last day of her life ("I will probably claw my throat out tonight") to protect others. Call her desperate methods despicable, if you so wish. In the end, unlike Keiichi and Shion, she is able to regain her senses (and the two did have their own last-chance talks too) before killing anyone. But even before that, she clearly avoids killing - heavily wounding both Rika and Mion, but not finishing them off despite her perfect conviction of their betrayal.
3. In other arcs, she is still a colorful heroine. Visiting waste dumps in search of treasure isn't really that weird, but very original and endearing. And her obsession with truth in Onikakushi-hen being continued with her deductive ability later on fits really well.
That is all on Rena :D. Second place goes to Mion, for a well balanced character who got too little screen time. Satoko and Keiichi get third place together.
I feel Rika will truly shine if they air season 2. This season sets her up to explode in our faces. Also Takano-san gets the award for the most fascinating side character, she was perfect at creeping me out.
Ooishi could very well be the one I liked least in the show. I accept that people like him are often needed, but that doesn't mean I have to like him. (Note: His mysterious "private reasons" for this case could change my mind.)

But poor Satoko only got 6! That's not fair. Poor her!

Rena actually made it into AnimeOnDVD's last round of character voting:
http://www.animeondvd.com/forum/showtopic.php?tid/18426/tp/1/
I figure, maybe, just maybe, if Geneon keeps seeing fan support like they do on this board, they might keep throwing money at Higurashi...(Please Lord let the second season cover the PS2 arcs, and someday maybe Matsuribayashi-hen/Saikoroshi-hen)

It's pretty hard to choose. Keiichi is cool, and was pretty awsome when he used the baseball bat to kill Satoko's grandfather(?)
Satoko would be next on my list, she's spunky and really quite cute. She looks even cuter in the episode where she gets tortured to death.
Then last, the one I voted for, mainly because it's hard to choose between Keiichi and Satoko, would be Mion. There was no certain episode she looked better to me in. She was great throughout the whole series.

Sonozaki Mion is my favorite.
the way that she handled the sucessor of the Sonozaki family, knowing what they do to keep Hinamizawa and Oyashiro-sama legend "safe" from others, and still manage to be herself . . .
and the girlish way that she have under that tomboy way . . . is really lovely!!!
Sonozaki Shion too!!! ^^
for similar reasons, since they weren't that different in personality anyway, Shion wasn't that much of a tomboy, but she haven't that girlish way that Mion does.
and, surprisingly, even for me, her psycho side on Satoshi "death" was . . . nice too!!! :p
Ryuugu Rena
i can't explain why i like her . . .
maybe it's her charisma!!! :D
Ps: ah . . . i have only watched the anime, i didn't played the games

Tomitake will always be my number one.*.* I've not seen the second season or anything, so there's still a lot I don't know, but he seems so fun and likable. So many others seem to dislike him though.;-;

I can't decide between Rena and Rika really
but I somehow voted for Rika..
I voted for Shion, after having recently seen the entire first season for the first time.
At first, I thought she was actually going to be sort of innocent and cute, as a counterweight to her malicious sister. (not that I don't like Mion ^^)
That prediction fell asunder, but I started to love her for intelligent, though evil, schemes. She did go a bit over the top when she crucified and stabbed Satoko to death, but it is Higurashi after all, and it's why we love it.

Vote Mion because I felt sorry for her in Meakashi-hen, but I was converted in the second season polls, haha
Rena.
Why ? Maybe 'cause she's the scaryest character of the Higurashi universe (at least in my point of view ^^). And I have a crush on every big axe / hatchet - wearing girls <3

I voted for Rika because she is cute and mysterious but I like Rena too. She often seem crazy like she is going to kill all the world :heh:. I like her axe.
Sonozaki Shion
2007-10-15, 02:20
Voted Rena, I find her rather cute and she seems to have an extra sense which aided Rika a tad in Episode 13 - Higu Kai.
<33
Keiichi is the best character of the Higurashi universe
Charisma, value and determination and a bat XD

Seeing as this is also a "discussion" and not just a poll, I'd like to throw in a couple of my cents into this. I don't really like Rena. I can't say I care for her much. Her cute mode, is yes, cute, but... It just doesn't do it for me. Espescially when you have characters like Satoko and Mion on the side, losing the ime to shine in the face of Rena and Rika. Rika, by theway, is one of my favorites and despite the fact most of her cuteness is a forced facade, you can't not love her. Rena? Not so much.
And sad to say, I really which I could change my vote to Mion. At least it went to Kei-chan.
Um Rena is my favorite character i allways like the cute and innocent friendly and a bit shy i dont know how to describe it (my english is not good enought) but for make it easy i allways liked the characters that have rena's personality also i love redheads and lolis =p i like her dark side and her fetish for cute things ><...
She is my tipe of woman =p Im looking for a Rena IRL xD i love that character xD
Rena for me too. She's so kawaii, but she's also a strong person when she needs to be (and that's not just because of her knife she carries)^^

Just consider the "chapters" as "parallel" stories. The purpose and goal are to be able to figure what is going on. and for this, you need hints that are scattered differently and so requiring different type of plot progression.
What happened in episodes 1-4 are NOT linked with what you have seen in 5-7, but that might explain you some situations.
not the good thread by the way.

This is probably a dumb question but my cursory search has found no indication. Apologies for the thread necromancy as well.
Mion/Shion is wearing a shoulder holster with what resembles a poorly-detailed automatic pistol. Is it really a gun? If it is, why does she never use it? There were several situations she's been in where slinging lead could have been very useful. And why does she even HAVE it; pistols are not legal for civilian ownership in Japan, certainly not by someone of that age. She wears it out in the open, even in front of Ooishi, and nobody even notices it.

You can tell that this gun wasn't put there by Chekhov since it never does anything. :)
As you've surmised, it's fake; Mion does help out at a toy store after all. In the PS2 game they actually removed it from her character design in order to avoid confusing the players. By the way, this short parody (http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/8899/1185235262784qv6.png) touches upon this.

If I'd only watched season 1, would have voted Shion.
But after seeing Higurashi Kai, Rena gets my vote.
She's a girl showing true courage, even in the darkest hours.
I have to decide between Rena and Satoko and I voted for Satoko.
Perhaps out of protective instinct, I'm not sure but I tend to like her more, even though I know Rena is the greater heroine, and I have a lot of sympathy for her, too. But Satoko deserves more votes not only because of Tatarigoroshi-hen and Maekashi-hen.

i voted for Keiichi. He's simply too cool and a total badass.
His expressions, his MANLYness, etc ... verything about him is awesome.
I voted for Rena since she's cute and dangerous. Heh, cleavers rule.
maebara ftw.

I voted Keiichi. He's filled with pure win. Nothin' better than seeing a guy in a maid costume one day, then completely pwn with a bat the next.
Such a badass. xD

Oh man, just you wait till the second season. Keiichi is absolutely mindblowing there. He easily jumps into the position of best character there.
I had to vote for Rena, she seems to be veru cute *0* but also his oyashiro mode, super detectve powers and everything in her is awesome, i would like to vote for keiichi too, hes awesome in the second season and first also, watching him beating Teppei is something to remember :heh: but well only can vote once T.T forgive me keiichii!!!

I've voted for Rena, I like her being evil and kind at the same time somehow.

For the first season, I have to go with Shion.
I think she's the reason on why I love Higurashi so much. Even though her killings were heart less and violent, she pretty much Satoko stand up much more. Right? Without the Satoko stabbing scene, Satoko wouldn't have that much of chracter developement. And the fact that Shion did it on love, well, I liked that.

I like both her "omochi kaeri!" mode and her "oyashiro-sama" mode (although Shion's got a better evil laugh...). She's just awesome ;)!
My second favorite character was Satoko...although she annoyed me at first...but then I saw tatarigoroshi-hen :upset:. I understand her better now.
I liked all the main characters for the most part, actually

Definitely Rena.
I think she was my favourite from the start of the series, and stuck the whole way through. I just love the way she reacts to cute things. xD Psycho-Rena + cleaver is also a very good combination. 8D;

Rena has my vote.Strange not many people seem too like satako.
Keiichi all the way. Easily the best character in both seasons.
Rena, duh :heh:
She just takes everything to the extreme: sometimes totally cute or completely psycho=D
The fact that she has a sort of 'symbol weapon', namely that cleaver she drags around and that she often says 'Kana? Kana?' or 'USODA!', doesn't hurt either...it's very memorable at the least^^

Keiichi is beyond amazing, imo. ♥
Even though there has been so many arcs to Higurashi, Onikakushi-hen will always remain my favourite. Everything is so perfect. I didn't even feel a sense of dislike towards Keiichi when I found out the solution to Onikakushi-hen, like a lot of my friends have.
Oh Kei, where would Higurashi be without you?
Most people remember Satoko's arc(s) as sort of painful to watch, thus by extension don't care for her as much as the others.
Dante of the Inferno
2009-03-25, 00:37
Though let's be fair here. Rika not withstanding, Satoko is by far the most tragic figure in season 1. It's very VERY hard imagining most other characters turning out the way she did after losing basically everyone in her life apart from Rika.
Rena has my vote.Strange not many people seem too like satako.
In the finaly Japanese popularity contests she was the least popular club member, coming 5th. Personally I find her personality rather bratty and annoying.
Rena sucks. I don't know if I've mentioned it yet, but I hate her with a burning passion. She's only relevant in two arcs and even though those 2 are my favorites it doesn't change the fact that K1 > Rika > Akasaka > Mion >=< Shion >>>> Satako >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Rena

Why ya gotta be such a hater?
Akasaka is relevant in EXACTLY 1 arc, while being useful in 2 whole episodes of season 2.
Besides, you forget that Rena was the one who figured out it was Mion/Shion behind the rampage for Watanagashi-hen/Meakashi-hen. Before you make Rena sound useless, put everything into perspective.
AKASAKA IS THE MAN. FACT. The only reason I even put Akasaka up there is because I'm his NUMBER ONE FAN.
It doesn't matter if Rena figured out the RAMPAGER was Shmion in Watanagashi-hen and Meakashi-hen, she still fails life to no end. I don't like her. He name should be changed to Naer so I can never see the resemblance in our names.

Her rampage was oh, so very badass. And kinda hot, in some weird way. ...Hmm...

Your opinion isn't absolute truth, stop stating it as if Rena really is a bad character. If you don't like her then say it, but don't go as far as to offend her fans by saying she sucks... that's just rude.
I'm not offending the fans, I'm offending the character. I'm totally cool with people who like Rena. I think she sucks. No need to get upset, normally I would say it's just an anime character, but I did make a big deal about her so it wouldn't feel right. :P
