Winner of the "1998 (The Second) Agency for Cultural Affairs Media Arts Festival award for excellence". Excerpt from the site giving the reasons for the award:
"This work is a music manga. You can almost hear the sound of the piano coming from the pages as you read. It is a convincing demonstration of how even "silent" manga can be used to express music. The delicate illustrations express the tempestuous emotions of the young girl and boy, while also creating a rhythm for the piano music. This work shows the new things that are possible with manga."

Nodame Cantabile (のだめカンタービレ) which I mentioned in my post here (http://forums.animesuki.com/showpost.php?p=641973&postcount=643) is not only geting an anime, but also a TV drama series :)

Its based on a josei manga thats serialized in the josei manga magazine Kiss.

I also forgot to mention this, but Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora is also getting a live action drama series too.

From AnimeNewsService (http://www.animenewsservice.com/):

Hanbun No Gatsu Ganoboru Sora Drama
After running as an anime via WOWOW's Ani Tsuushin Dengeki Light Novel Gekijou, earlier this year, Hanbun No Gatsu Ganoboru Sora (Looking Up At The Half Moon) will be adapted to a latenight television drama this fall. AV Idol Miku Ishida will star in the leading role. TV Tokyo will broadacast the series from Ocotber. The eight volume original novel has become a best-seller, with over one million copies sold. Ooh, live action Mushishi. :D That would be interesting.

Another live-action TV series was announced!
According to ANS (http://www.animenewsservice.com/), there will be a live-action drama of the shoujo manga Yamato Nadeshiko Shichihenge (aka "The Wallflower" in the US). The live-action drama airs this October. An anime version will follow in January 2007. I can't wait to see it! :D It will probably be very similar to Nobuta o Produce, which was my favorite drama..... :D

The story is about a woman who lends her mansion to a group of young boys on one condition: they must turn her daughter (or was it niece? Granddaughter? I forget) into a nice lady. The problem? The young girl is basically the girl from The Ring :heh: Dark, scary, no social ability, locks herself in her room all day watching horror movies, keeps skeletons as pets, etc.... so it's quite an interesting comedy. :) I think a live-action suits it better, since the manga is awkward (the art isn't very good and the panel work isn't well done, in my opinion).

----------------------------------------------------------------

Another live-action series! Last year's popular live-action drama Hana Yori Dango will be getting another season. Viewers can log into the TBS website (station Hana Yori Dango will air on) to vote for which parts of the long manga they would like to see in this live-action season. :)

-----------------------------------------------------------------

More shoujo goodness! It's rare that a shoujo ANIMATED movie hits the theater screens, so I thought I would announce this movie:

Harukanaru Toki no Naka de ~Maihitoyo~ (official site (http://www.gamecity.ne.jp/neoromance/maihitoyo/)) comes out in Japanese theaters August 19. It's a shoujo movie based on the popular game/TV series/manga. :) The animation looks so beautiful it brought a tear to my eye~~~~. This movie is a spinoff of the TV anime Harukanaru Toki no Naka de ~Hachiyoshou~, which is currently available on AnimeSuki (except only half of it has been subbed ~_~ Come on, subbers, go pick it up~ *_*)

That's awesome. I just hope we can watch it without finishing the TV series. :uhoh: Actually, I don't think people would fansub the movie anyway.

Is it just me or are anime/novels getting a live action version left and right? That's very interesting.

Teppan Shoujo Akane Drama
Aoki Tateo and Ariga Hitoshi's manga Teppan Shoujo Akane, serialized by Shonen Gahosha's Young King will become the basis of a new TV drama to air on TBS at 9:00 from October 15th, 2006. Maki Horikita will star in the laead role of a young Tokyo-based Teppan "iron plate" cook who travels Japan in search of her missing father. In the process of touring the country, she uses the unique ingredients found in various areas to serve up many out-of-this-world dishes that will surprise viewers every week. In an Iron Chef sort of twist she must battle other chefs through culinary competition. The original manga ran for one year from April last year through June and two volumes are currently on the market. While not a very popular comic at all, TBS has siezed on the storyline as it has become known as an underground masterpiece.

Planning to air in spring of 2007, "Maison Ikkoku" was announced earlier by ANN (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/article.php?id=7620) (and by others) with Misaki Ito-san playing Kyoko Otonashi. From the newspaper article, this will be Nakabayashi-san's screen debut, and was selected from 3200 applicants in auditions open to amateurs only.

Hmm well I got the idea from the post it was a special I was reffering to the series on which this live action special is based on . Well I have a ahunch it will be loosely based on the anime special Maison Ikkoku: Through the Passing of the Seasons (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=2840) which was released in 88 which is a recap of the whole series . Or it could also be 92 special which I have unfortunately not veiwed Maison Ikkoku : Prelude, When the Cherry Blossoms in the Springtime Return .

Also I do hope they retain some old tunes, Suki Sa by Anzen Chitai was my fave opening : )

She begins to believe that the pains from the cuts are the only solace from all the agony she has been through. As the new school year starts, Ayumu carries an exacto-knife in her pocket for comfort. As the days go by, Ayumu has finally made a new friend at her new school, Manami Anzai. Manami is a cheery girl, and she talks mostly about her boyfriend. Manami's sometimes manipulative and unpredictable behavior flutters Ayumu. Manami seems to let Ayumu into her other group of friends, but Ayumu still has a hard time making good friends because she is afraid of hurting them like Shii-chan. One day, Ayumu makes plans to meet with Manami, and Ayumu finds that Manami had broken up with her boyfriend. Manami is shaken up, and she tries to jump in front of a train to kill herself. Ayumi saves her, but Manami seems to be more angry than thankful for being saved.

Classic Shōjo Manga Anmitsu-hime Gets Television Drama

Anmitsu-hime, Shōsuke Kurakane's classic shōjo comedy manga series that first ran from 1949 to 1955, is being revived in a live-action television drama special that will air on Japan's Fuji TV next January. Mao Inoue (live-action Hana Yori Dango's Tsukushi) will star as Anmitsu-hime, a headstrong princess who gets into mischief in a fanciful feudal land known as Amakara.

The original manga had already spawned a 1954-60 live-action film series, a 1983-84 live-action drama television series starring Kyoko Koizumi, a 1986-87 manga remake by Izumi Takemoto in Nakayoshi magazine, and a 1986-87 anime television series by Studio Pierrot.

Dragon Ball Movie to Film This Year for 2008 Release

Final Destination's James Wong to direct Justin Chatwin (Goku)

Twentieth Century Fox has officially announced that it signed director James Wong (Final Destination, X-Files television series, The One) and casted twenty-five-year-old Justin Chatwin (War of the Worlds, The Invisible, Lost television series) in the lead role of Goku for the movie adaptation of Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball action manga. According to the Variety newspaper, filming is set to begin this month, and the film is slated to open worldwide on August 15, 2008. James Marsters (Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Spike, Smallville's Brainiac) will play the antagonist Piccolo, and Stephen Chow, of Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer fame, is producing the project.

Wong will not only direct the film, but he also rewrote an earlier script that was submitted by Ben Ramsey (The Big Hit). According to The Hollywood Reporter newspaper, the story centers around the alien Goku as an adult as he protects Earth — the very planet he was sent to destroy. Chatwin is training under the stunt firm 87Eleven (The Matrix, The Bourne Supremacy, 300). Other roles are still being casted. Previous reports have indicated that shooting will take place near Montreal, Canada and in Mexico, and that Heroes actor James Kyson Lee is auditioning for the role of Yamcha.

Between 1984 and 1995, Toriyama created 519 installments of the original manga for the publisher Shueisha and its Weekly Shonen Jump magazine. The manga's 42 compiled volumes have sold over 150 million copies in Japan and over 300 million copies worldwide. Both the manga and its anime adaptations (Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z) have enjoyed success in countries in Asia, Europe, North America, and South America. The 17 animated movies in the franchise have been seen a record 49 million times in Japanese theaters. Fox first acquired the live-action film rights to Dragon Ball in 2002.

Subaru Ballet Manga Adapted into Live-Action Movie

Warner Bros. Japan announced that it is producing a joint Japanese/Chinese film adaptation of Masahito Soda's Subaru manga about a budding ballerina. Actress and model Meisa Kuroki (Vexille's titular character, Crows Zero's Ruka) has already been filming on location in Shanghai with director Lee Chi-Ngai since October 28, after an earlier Tokyo shoot in September. The film's partners are planning a simultaneous 2009 opening throughout Asia, and are also hoping for releases in Europe and America.

The manga centers on Subaru (Kuroki) and her twin brother, both of whom love ballet and constantly visit ballet classes to watch the dancers. One day, the brother is bed-stricken by a brain tumor. While visiting her brother in the hospital, Subaru meets a formerly famous ballerina (Kaori Momoi) who was forced to give up dancing due to her declining physical condition. The former ballerina agrees to train Subaru to perhaps achieve her own ballet dreams.

The manga's 11 volumes have sold 1.8 million copies in Japan. The manga has yet to be released in North America, although it has been publishing in France, Germany, and Spain. Kuroki has been training for three hours nearly every day since June for her role, while Momoi is already a trained ballerina since she spent three years studying abroad at London's Royal Ballet School when she was 12.

The popular shounen-ai manga Antique Bakery 西洋 骨董 洋菓子店 by Yoshinaga Fumi, which ran from 1999-2000, is expected to have a Korean movie version expected to be releashed later this year. The movie will star Joo Ji Hoon and Kim Jae Wok. The movie is also rumored to maintain the original manga's shounen-ai and friendship elements, unlike the drama adaptation that aired in the 2001 season.

The manga is also expected to be turned into an anime, Fuji TV has announced that the series will be turned into an anime with twelve episodes, due to be released in July this year.

Anywho this movie looks like it's going to be sweet and that it may actually do the manga some justice. A lot of scenes and characters are easily recognized even if you have no idea what they are saying. They even have Kenji's super awesome bunny costume!

The main character, Kamogawa Asumi, will be played by 16-year-old Sakuraba Nanami (http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Sakuraba_Nanami). I've never seen her act before, but she is a good visual match for the part:

Kochikame (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kochira_Katsushika-ku_Kameari_Kōen-mae_Hashutsujo), the longest continuously running manga in history, will be receiving an adaptation into a TV drama, reveals the latest Weekly Shonen Jump.Shingo Katori (http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Katori_Shingo), the youngest member of famous Japanese band SMAP will be playing the role of lazy police officer Kankichi Ryotsu.Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari Kouen Mae Hashutsujo (This Police Station in front of Kouen Park, Katsushika Prefecture), usually shortened to こち亀 / Kochikame, has been continually serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump since 1976, making it the single longest running manga series in history.

The story deals with Kankichi Ryotsu, the lazy and undisciplined patrol cop and his equally bizarre police officer co-workers at the Kameari police station. A TV anime began in 1996 producing two theatrical films before ending in 2005.Details on the TV drama are scarce, but the casting of Shingo Katori (pictured above) as Ryotsu is receiving its good share of attention.Since SMAP is essentially a male idol group, created by famed talent agency Johnny’s and mostly popular among Japanese women, the choice of Katori for the manly Ryotsu has generated a fair amount of criticism.

BECK live action movie announced http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2009-06-01/beck-rock-manga-gets-live-action-film-with-hiro-mizushima

Focusing on Ryusuke.. I'd rather it'd stay closer to the manga.

Me too. I'm very dubious about this, though I'm a big Beck fan.

I'm a huge BECK fan as well. That's why I hope this won't be all pretty boys acting like they know how to play music. I mean I hope 1 year extensive training would be enough to make it look authentic.

It's hard to see how any adaptation that focus on Ryusuke instead of Koyuki could be terribly faithful. All in all, I would have been much happier with a second season of the anime.

KOF or King of Fighters video game will have a live action film

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_King_of_Fighters_(film)

I hope this will not be in the ranks of the old streetfighter Vandame and Dead or Alive Live Action film.

I am very angry that a live action movie of Cowboy Bebop is being made, it is my second favourite anime ever , and a live action film-done by none other than Fox Studios-will destroy the legacy that is been created by CB being made for just two seasons.

I would prefer it if they made a thrid season/animated movie of the anime instead of going live-action.

A live-action version of Space Battleship Yamato is in development. Details at:

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2009-07-18/noboru-ishiguro-confirms-live-action-yamato-in-development

Of course, whether anything will come of development is another matter entirely. They don't call it "development hell" for nothing.

We already know that an animated film is due this December.

Huh. Two Yamato productions at the same time?

^ Apparently so. I do wonder how the live-action version will turn out. Part of me fears that poor production values may make it look really cheesy. Oh well, we'll just have to wait and see.

Masamune Shirow’s legendary cyberpunk franchise Ghost in the Shell has had its Hollywood adaptation in the works for some time now, with the latest news being that Dreamworks has assigned Laeta Kalogridis as lead writer.

Seasoned writer Kalogridis is taking over from Jamie Moss, who was originally set to adapt the popular Japanese franchise to a more western market. She has written scripts for a number of Hollywood films, and is also involved with the Hollywood adaptation of Battle Angel Alita, apparently with few disasters to her credit (although she did help write a Tomb Raider movie). Also involved in this project are Avi Arad, Ari Arad and Steven Paul of Seaside Entertainment. Avi Arad, formerly of Marvel, has been involved with many of Marvel’s TV and movie adaptations, including such titles as Spider Man and The Hulk.

Dreamworks has planned this adaptation as a “Live Action 3D”, presumably implying a heavy CG component, just as with the anime and even manga versions.
