Actually it's the first time an OST makes me smile like that. I like the OP, I love the ED, but what's between them is really THE thing. Don't you think? I can't find a proper example, cause each episode so far as its own "rythm" and pace. But still, the music is always sort of "joyful". Very much like the heroin. In one word, suits perfectly the story and the characters.

The music in the show is great! without it the show can suffer quite a bit, episode 8 was a bit too quite.. most of the time, but it picked up at the ending.

I chose Hare Hare Yukai for my phone's ringtone, so I'm just as crazy.

So far the BGM that stuck in my head the most is the one that plays at the very beginning of episode 2, when Kyon is talking about his beliefs about aliens/ESPers/time travellers. For some reason I can't stop hearing it at the most random moments.

I like all of Episode 2's BGMs, actually. The ska music when Kyon talks about Haruhi's oddities, the slow blues-type when Kyon discovers that his new seat is in front of Haruhi's, the incredibly overwrought violins and tango when Mikuru is introduced, the bouncy drums when Haruhi grabs Mikuru's boobs... it's just absolutely perfect for the scenes.

The BGMs really fit the show, eventhough most of them are not really the super outstanding type. Nevertheless, I still enjoy the BGMs for their light, easy sound.

Anyway, does anyone know when the OST will be released? I tried searching around the usual places without any luck.

That's exactly when I realized I enjoyed the music too. That computer club theme is just sooo 70's. lol I feel like I'm in Starsky and Hutch's car. :D
Then I really like the sos brigade room theme, reminds me of Square SNES games. ^^

I believe the "Suzumiya Haruhi no Tsumeawase" is the single with the two songs Haruhi sang in eps 12 along with Mikuru's song from eps 1

I think Geki Chuu Kashuu is a wrong romanisation. The single they're on is definitely Suzumiya Haruhi no Tsumeawase. I saw another dodgy romanisation going around too. First track God Knows, second track Lost my Music, third track Koi no Mikuru Densetsu. If it's that, it's Tsumeawase.

While I did rip the latter way back, the full version is just much more satisfying. Not much is needed to say about the former, 'cept that I don't recommend listening to it while driving...multiple instances of Harugasm may occur. ;)

The single made it onto the Oricon daily charts at 9th place (http://blog.livedoor.jp/ustan777/archives/50591081.html), compared to Hare Hare Yukai's 15th place. In fact, this is the first time a Haruhi single was able to make it into the top 10 on the first day. So I wouldn't be so quick to think that this single won't top Hare Hare Yukai.

If this insert song single can remain within the top 10 for the next 2 days as well, it's actually possible that it'll beat Hare Hare Yukai in the weekly rankings.

By the way, I got hit by the konozama bomb ^^; (2ch joke about Amazon running out of stock)

I had the opportunity to listen to Haruhi's single "Geki Chuu Kashuu" and I must confess the song "God Knows..." is, by far, the best anime insert song I've listened to. I'm even impressed by how different Hirano-san's voice in the song is -- definitely not something I'd expect from her, so she deserves my salutes. :bow:

I think she's acting that voice :heh: I don't have it readily with me because I'm in class, but the making-of one of the Suzumiya Haruhi commercials omake on the first DVD has her voice in a much more moderated tone.

Actually, one reason I'm not as enthused about many of the character album songs is because I don't have a relevant image to attach to them, and often I can't imagine any.

For example, in "Mitsukete Happy Life", I can kinda-sorta see Mikuru singing... but not much else. However, the "three two one hai!" in the beginning, I can so see her doing, and that's why I love it.

Yuki's songs... taken on their own, they're easy on the ears, certainly. But I simply can't imagine Yuki singing. Not with any great emotion or feeling.

Compared to "God Knows" and "Lost my Music", when I can remember Yuki on the guitar and Haruhi singing her heart out... or even better, "Hare Hare Yukai" and the ending dance.

Mitsukete Happy Life is an enjoyable song. It has a nice happy/sunny/kid-like tune to it, that made me feel happy too. However, nothing beats Yuki, Muon, Madobe Nite, since it sounded a little cold but has a very lasting impact on the listeners. The speech part (where Yuki's VA uses Yuki's voice), is simply the best part of all.

Now I remember which .hack//SIGN song Yuki, Muon, Madobe Nite's intro sounded like: Its the anime intro (but I forgot the damned title).

I just bought the the character singles, and found a fun mix-and-match you can do if you have them and an audio editor: Open the thre Hare Hare Yukai tracks for editing, trim a few samples off the start of two of them so that the music starts on the same sample, and make a new track of the left channel of one and the right channel of another. Presto- your own duet (since the vocals are centered across the channels). Of the three, I like Haruhi+Yuki the best. Of course, after you have a duet, you can mix both channels of the third at 33% volume with the duet at 66% and you seem to have all three of them standing in different places next to each other :)

btw, while I'm thinking of it, does anyone know the significance of the "-run" in Mikuru-run? (Aside from Haruhi making an even worse tongue-twister of Mi-mi-mirakuru Mikuru-run)

p.s. - please, no PMs asking for audio mixes - I'm trying to make up for DLing the fansubs by buying the CDs and don't want to negate that - this is a do-it-yourselfer

ルンルン, run run, is a sort of attachment to shoujo or mahou shoujo anime/manga's main girl.

Koi no Mikuru Densetsu is a mega parody song of these genres: mahou shoujo, sentai, super robot, henshin hero(ine) etc.

So, it sounds like an 80's sentai/super robot OP theme, have the lyrics of mahou shoujo, sentai, super robot, henshin hero, voice overs of attacks/dialogues and of course ends with a shoujoish 'runrun'.

To answer that question, that would be Tchaikovsky's Symphony #4. More specifically, the Finale; Allegro con fuoco. You can probably find the Russian National Orchestra's performance of it on Amazon or other CD sites.

Mitsukete Happy Life has a happy tune and lyrics that tells of Mikuru looking forward to a happy future, actually more like wishing for one. Somehow I found some sadness in the lyrics.

Toki no Puzuru, is a sad song, especially its chorus and the fact that its sung by Mikuru. Particularly this line: 'itsumademo zutto isshou ni nante... ...muri desuka?',
which means 'Is it impossible for us to be together always?'.

Honestly I feel like crying everytime I listen to this song, hopefully its because I actually misunderstood the song lol, the lyrics just sounds too sad for me.

Just got my hands on the three character singles, and wow, can Chihara Minori-n sing. Haruhi's songs are energetic as expected, while Mikuru's songs sound like they come from a shoujo anime, but Yuki's techno-melancholic songs are just......wow. :love:

I finally tracked the character singles down.

Mikuru's 'Three, two, one, hai!' just leaves me in stitches every time. And then the 'yum yum yum, chibitto' that follows delivers the knockout punch. Since I'm usually rendered unconcious for the rest of the song due to l33tness overload, I can't comment on the rest of it. The second song is just lovely, and it really feels like something Mikuru would sing. Her songs fit her character perfectly.

I was a bit underwhelmed by Haruhi's, though. Probably because her songs with ENOZ were just so awesome that the bar was set too high. Although pompously declaring 'SOS nara daijoubu!' is addicting. I've had that line running through my head since I first heard it.

Yuki's songs were really good. Once I stopped trying to imagine Yuki singing them, I I enjoyed them more. Taken as songs themselves, they're probably the best out of all the character songs.

Mikuru's 2nd song gives me the strange sense of it being a take-off on at least four different songs from Les Miserables. Which is strange because I hardly know that music, but I keep picking up what seem to be musical references to it.

Yup, i have the violin intonation under my belt...been playing for 8yrs so i better have some of it down ;) THe switch to a guitar was interesting, as i now no longer have to really fine tune my fingers and just put my finger down on the right fret, but the added chord memorizing and such is a pain. Oh well, i still love playing guitar, and the blisters that come with it.


Thanks for the thicker pick suggestion. That was one that i totally forgot about. I'll use one of my friends thicker picks and see how they feel like, but if you have a thicker pick already, you wouldn't mind doing a little comparison between the medium and heavy picks? Thanks

Well, like I said, I won't have access to one for a couple days. I'll let you know then.

Thicker picks are a double-edged sword. You can pick faster and more accurately, but if you don't have proper control you'll knock the guitar out of tune or even break a string. Sometimes it helps to rest your hand on the bridge (off the strings).

That tab was pretty much dead on (what I could remember of it). Usually if most of it's right, then the whole thing's good.
It's definitely easier to pick with a heavy pick, but it's doable with a medium. My advice is to learn it slow and accurate first and then build speed.

I love how both "God Knows" and "Lost My Music" seemed to be written with the storyline in mind.
Those lyrics above puts so much more emphasis on Kyon's "Bluebird of Happiness" jab :DI was halfway translating Mikuru's Toki no Puzzle, Yuki's SELECT, I couldn't carry on anymore because my Japanese is too weak lol

Until you hear those songs, especially Toki no Puzzle, I was teary eyed for the chorus. Toki no Puzzle directly mentions 'The Blue Bird of Happiness" in the chorus.

Here's a summary of the song, which probably has more meaning my translation:

This song I believe, talks about both young and adult Mikuru, a very emotional song. Its better if you have read a considerable amount of the novels. Mikuru cares about the future and as importantly, the SOS dan, especially Kyon.

Mikuru is sent from the future to observe the SOS dan, but her ultimate objective is to unsure the future is safe. She was sent on such a job and even though she's from the future, she does not have any real knowledge about her own future. Her future is highly uncertain, for young Mikuru that is. That's why adult Mikuru is worried for her, her naive and fragile past.

The first chorus is extremely depressing, for me at least, I feel teary eyed everytime I hear it and even now when I'm typing. Mikuru obviously has feelings for Kyon, but Kyon is probably the one person in the universe who she can never be together with. Even if she says that if she can see his smile, she's content, deep inside she really wants to be with him forever. She cannot be with him because of two reasons: She's from the future and must return one day. Kyon is selected by Haruhi, he is destined to be with Haruhi.

Being from the future, Mikuru is alone, for that she isn't allowed to make too much contact with anything in this time plane, she cannot influence the past too much. For that she has been very lonely, until she got into the SOS dan. She really wants to make friends with everybody.

Deep down Mikuru has alot of wishes and desires, but she cannot reach out for any of them, for she is not supposed to exist in this timeplane in the first place. She obviously isn't the happiest person in SOS-dan, but she tries hard to smile and also tries to make sure she doesn't upset the others. She cries when she finds that she is helpless or caused something bad, because thats all she could do, there are many things that she can't take care of. Being a crybaby is her nature and she herself doesn't want to be like this.

Young Mikuru didn't really have a happy past, does adult Mikuru have a happy future? Most likely no. Mikuru is destined to be bound to SOS dan, which is the source of her sadness, but also the source of her happiness. Right from the start when Haruhi chose Mikuru, her future has already been sealed, she doesn't have a future for herself. But SOS dan also brought her happiness, probably the only happiness she had in her life.

I think the pairing of insert songs really shed light on why Haruhi wanted to help out the pop culture club in episode 12. Although I haven't the slightest idea how she didn't break down into tears after singing both (then again "Lost My Music" cuts out early) since they must have hit very close to home.

More silly CD audio tricks...

There are a surprising number of separable data streams encoded into the music of the character singles. First, the vocal and off-vocal tracks come from the same recording of the off-vocal components, which means you can subtract one from the other and get a basically clean copy of the vocals, a capella. Second, some of the harmonies are added in out of phase, which means that when you add the left and right channels, they disappear, but when you subtract the left and right, everything *except* them disappears. The best example of this is Yuki, Muon, Madobe Nite. If you subtract the off-vocal from the vocal you get Yuki solo, and if you convert the channels of that so L' = L + R and R' = L - R you end up with melody-Yuki in the left ear and harmony-Yuki in the right ear, with no instruments anywhere! (For anyone wondering how Haruhi could cram terabytes of data into a small jpg, this must be how...) All this should be done with a never-compressed version of the track straight off the CD. MP3 (or similar) encoding destroys enough of the phase data that it isn't nearly as clean and you get bad flanging effects.

Anyway, endless fun for anyone who likes tinkering with audio (and bought the CDs. Don't come asking :-)

p.s. - I also used WMA Pro 5.1 to encode a version of Hare Hare Yukai that has the three singers a capella in each of the 3 front speakers, and the music (no vocals) in the rear speakers. Sounds great!

Yuki's playing a Gibson Goddess (I think), which is essentially a feminized SG. The Epiphone G-400 runs about $400 US, so that's probably your best route. It's a great guitar for the money.
