View Full Version : The Team Behind Samurai Champloo
Anyone know of any other anime that was done by the team behind samurai champloo? I just recently finished watching the last episode and it had been a long time since I liked any anime as much as that one.
For those of you who havn't watched it I would highly recomend it. It has awesome animation, especially in the fight scenes. Art style is superb, and add in the "just right" blend of comedy and its deffinately in a league of its own. The intro may turn some people off at first, same with the first episode... but give it a chance, you own't regret it.
So... anyway, anime by that team.. or maybe something kind of along those lines. Since people won't be able to suggest without knowing what ive seen here is a brief list.
Bleach, Naruto, Hunter X Hunter, Ruroni Kenshin, Ninja Scroll, Monster, Chobits, hellsing, blood, mushishi... pretty much everything relatively mainstream....
Cowboy Bebop (http://anidb.info/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=23), of course ;)
Lol... I knew there was something that felt familiar to me... anyway, ive seen that one as well.
Darn... here's to hopin that there is much more to come from these talented folk.

I actually think that they lack in the most important department of all (for me at least) which is story.Northing really grabbing.

If you're talking about Manglobe, which was the main group involved with the production of Champloo, they have two other anime under their belts: Ergo Proxy and Rozen Maiden: Traumend (although they do so much more with Ergo Proxy than with RMT).
Ergo Proxy (http://animeotaku.wordpress.com/2006/05/05/ergo-proxy-09/) is a post-apocalyptic, futuristic, cyberpunk anime. Although not as good as Champloo, IMO, its story is very well written despite its often inconsistent animation and character design. I don't think it would be better than Samurai Champloo per se, but I think it would be a good watch because its story is pretty strong (just ignore the ugly deviations).
Rozen Maiden: Traumend (http://animeotaku.wordpress.com/2006/03/20/physics223s-introduction-to-rozen-maiden/) is an anime about dolls. The first thing that would perhaps be on your mind is a big YEECH. However, it has a very well written storyline, and despite the fact that it is about dolls, the dolls are used as anthropomorphic objects to represent what is humanity and human nature.
(I wrote about these two anime, feel free to comment on my review or whatnot.)

S. Watanabe's stories aren't really about the end result and aren't really about 1 normal storyline that you find in a billion different animes...It is about the JOURNEY that leads to the conclusion, the concept of the animated world, and transcending themes...Also the camaraderie of the characters...That's why I love his animes because it's so much more than the gold at the end of the rainbow; it's about traveling that rainbow; seeing the colors...
As for suggestions, I know this sounds weird, but Lupin the 3rd is the closest thing your gonna find in the same area code as Bebop and Champloo (Shows that really have no comparisons in modern anime; another reason Watanabe is so unique)...Yeah it's older, but it's truley great with incredible BGM's and jazz musical score (Not to mention it's totally episodic like the other shows)...Hell 3 of the 4 main characters are arguably prototypes for Watanabe's later creations:
Fujiko = Faye Valentine
Jigen = Jet Black
Goeman = Jin
Lupin, well he ain't Spike or Mugen that's for sure :p, but he wears a suit and is "too cool for school..." This show is really beyond it's time...
Otherwise I guess Black Lagoon is somewhat trying to achieve the same type of energy and for some reason the characters of Cowboy bebop are in the show's logo, so i guess there's a reason for that besides being a Geneon anime(Maybe someone will tell me)...Personally i'd suggest Samurai 7 because of it's unique stylistic animation at times, cool action sequences, and right now it seems to be in the same genre as bebop and Champloo when it comes to "the journey" aspect...
