View Full Version : Haruhi Suzumiya Favorite Character Poll #2 (Multiple Choice)
Catgirls
2006-07-06, 09:14
Yay! It’s time for yet another favorite character(s) poll. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/Mousefinger/Misc/biggrinlove.gif Here are the results from the first favorite character poll (http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?t=31638):
http://i6.tinypic.com/1z4k48j.png
This new poll is a multiple choice poll and while we won’t restrict you from voting for every character, please try to limit your choice to your top 3 or 4 picks if you can. If you like the entire cast equally, then so be it, but if you can narrow it down a bit, then that’s even better. If you like one character the most, then don’t feel the need to vote for anymore.
Please remember that once you make your vote you may not "come back" later to add or change your previous vote(s). So make sure you know all the characters you want to include in your vote before you click the "Vote Now" button.
And of course the vote is public, so your votes will be visible. :)
Thread Rules
No campaigning for votes.
What this means is don't post something like this:
 "VOTE FOR KYON!!!" Or…"Tsuruya >>>>> Kyon's Sister" Or… "DO NOT VOTE FOR TANIGUCHI!!!!111 :frustrated: "
Any post with "Vote for…/Do not vote for..." verbiage will be deleted. Discuss why you do or don’t like characters without campaigning for votes.
Do not insult or harass other members for their choices.
Please remember: this is for fun. Do not take it so seriously that you end up in an argument with another forum member because they express a fondness for a character you loathe. Discussion and good spirited banter is always welcome, but harassing people won’t be tolerated.
Have fun, but post intelligently.
It’s great to have fun, but please try your best to add substance to what you post and make your thoughts interesting for the generation of fans that will follow after you’re long gone and on to watching some other series.

Does Mikuru include Adult Mikuru?
Haruhi, Kyon, Yuki and Tsuruya would be my top 4. Mikuru is 5th, Kyon's sis 6th and Ryoko 7th. The other guys (including the esper chatterbox) don't even register in my radar. :heh:

Voted for:
Tsuruya
Yuki
Haruhi
Yuki was by far the best character of the show IMHO. she literally runs circles around the rest of the characters.
Tsuruya may have not done much, but she certainly did enough to get a vote from me. Meido Tsuruya FTW :heh:
And I voted for Haruhi simply because she is still Haruhi. :D

Does Mikuru include Adult Mikuru?Yeah, it does. I'm sorry. I should have had a separate option for Adult Mikuru. It slipped my mind. A vote for Mikuru is a vote for either version of her (or both). I also added Shamisen.

So, I guess Haruhi also includes little Haruhi as well, eh?

Hmmm... Tough tough poll...
Three votes automatically go out to the three lead characters. Haruhi because she's the dynamo that drives the show. Kyon because he's a great "straight man" for everyone else's craziness and because he's the best in-character narrator I can think of. And Yuki because she's a fascinating character type- partly an alien creature with vast powers and intellect and partly an emotionally vulnerable little girl.
I would really like to cast a fourth vote for super-genki Tsuruya-san...

Yuki, Tsuraya, Imouto-san, and Shamisen. Why did no one else vote for Shamisen?
Haruhi, Kyon, Yuki and Tsuruya.
I sort of forgot about Itsuki. :heh:

My votes were:
Yuki: She may be not be a human in the most literal sense, but despite that she's more human than a lot of the other characters. It's the little things she says and does: getting rid of her glasses, agreeing to go to the Computer Club sometimes, only lowering her finger when Kyon says it's O.K. (in episode 7). She's not as "in your face" as the other characters, she's quiet, reserved, and incredibly endearing.
Itsuki: Some people seem not to like him because he's smug, prone to overlong explanations, and basically quite annoying. Those are the reasons I like him so much though. ^^; Seeing him irritate Kyon is endlessly amusing, just as seeing him constantly so calm is endlessly interesting and enigmatic. Also, I think he reminds me of myself, so of course I'm going to vote for him.
Kyon: After watching the whole series, I don't know how I couldn't vote for him. It wouldn't be anywhere near as brilliant without his hilariously dry monologues.

Yuki, Tsuruya, and Ryoko.
This is pretty much self-explanatory.
Keeping my votes to my Top Three in no particular order:
Kyon ~ the steady "side-kick" that endured all, dispensed all sarcasm with a straight face, protected Mikuru, yet gave in to those hidden pictures, opposed Haruhi and all the "nonsense" while yet wanting/enjoying it. I dont know why but he somehow represents the perfect otaku.
Yuki ~ she grew on me, just love the quiet, silent look, and she seems to me like a child discovering the world and its fun.
Mikuru ~ erm. maid suit and green tea?
I would have liked to add Tsuruya, Kyon's sister, and ENOZ members. meh.
I find it amusing that Emiri gets a slot, but the Computer Society President(CSP), who was featured in no less than three episodes, with an appearance in a fourth, gets no love. :p Not that I would vote for him, but man... harsh. ;)
I restricted myself to four votes,
..) Nagato Yuki
~~~~ ~~~~
Overall, THE character that I like the most from the series since the very beginning. Was ecstatic when they finally reached the episodes when she was the focus, or had a lot of focus.
..) Kyon's Sister
~~~~ ~~~~
If she really existed in real life, I would be whipped by her overwhelming cuteness.
..) Kyon
~~~~ ~~~~
Being a literature student by choice, I have a love for sarcasm, dry wit, bitter cynicism, and all the darker sides of repertoire. Stick and stones may break your bones, but verbal barbs leave mental scars. :D
..) Tsuruya
~~~~ ~~~~
This one is a freebie by me. ;)
I'm pleasantly suprised to see Yuki's headstart. Can we discuss who we didnt want to vote for and why? I didnt vote for Shamisen because he wasnt really a charater they developed. I mean, if he is just a talking cat; not much to vote for me. I didnt vote for Haruhi because she didnt particularly impress me ~ okay maybe in the concert episode, in the island syndrome episodes, she did, but thats all.
Lost, that's a bit too negative a way of discussing I guess. lol. For instance, I don't like Kyon's sister, because her voice is still too annonyingly fake for my taste . But I can't blame people for finding her cute. :heh:
I agree with you on Shamisen. That's a third role. But I don't agree on Haruhi. Her voice IS impressive all way long, in my humble opinion.
Suzumiya Haruhi - yes yes and YES! Because... She is the Heroine, She is the More Interesting Character, She is the one who boost on the Upper this Anime, She is a Tragical Girl with a painful Past... She is the one who gave a lot of reference (Gyakuten Saiban or Pheonix Wright)
Kyon - Yes because it's the more important Character with Haruhi and he is so *_*
Nagato Yuki - Love Yuki because she is a special character that I Like
Asahina Mikuru - The angel *_*, no word to explain
Asakura Ryoko - Yes, Ryoko get her place... A tragical and Mysterious Girl
Koizumi Itsuki - Who forget him? I like him! Please, give more Shonen Ai *_*
Kyon's Sister - The Little Cutting and force me to watch, the little Kawaii little sister *_* ^_^
Tsuruya - get me Laught again :D
Ack... I consider almost all the characters critical to the success of the story ... so under the banner that "I would have voted for all of them":
1) Suzumiya Haruhi - one of the better realizations of the type of anime archetype I tend to like best. She lacked a sword, but her dialog and personality were just wonderful.
2) Kyon - easily in the top 5 male anime leads I've ever encountered. He lets his mule-ish determination not to understand what is going on get him, but he's not a spineless wuss at all. Great narration work by the VA.
3) Nagato Yuki - interestingly, this "blank slate" has the most character development and evolution in the series... and those wonderful "thousand mile stare" eyes.
4) Tsuruya - a minor character but the energy level when she's on screen just pegs the meter.
I could have voted for Mikuru and Itsuki - both critical characters and exceptionally well implemented... but then I'd just might as well be voting for everyone and then whats the point? And annoying Tanaguchi ... necessary to emphasize to Kyon why the "normal world" does indeed suck.
Gold Star to the ENOZ girls for referencing me over to the retired group ZONE (darn it, the bookstore only had their B-side melody album)
I voted as I did in the last poll (Yuki, Mikuru, Tsuruya and Imouto), with the addition here of Ryouko and ENOZ.
My feelings for Yuki, Mikuru and Tsuruya are unchanged: still awesome, still amazing. Imouto gets a bump up thanks to the infamous Bag scene.
Ryouko gets added because of episode 10, as expected. Not only in the battle scene, but also in the beginning when she's trying to talk to Haruhi. ("Besou no koto iwanai de yo ne!")
ENOZ, well, I've made my liking for the drummer known many times.
One question: does Emiri Kimidori get any more appearances later in the novel? (Spoilers are obviously fine.) Otherwise, the computer club president is even more shafted: he appears in three episodes, and gets nothing. Emiri appears in one, and gets a place in the OP sequence.
I voted for:
Haruhi: I don't call myself The Absolute Haruhist for nothing, loved her ever since the end of episode 1 lol.
Kyon: Haruhi-sama chose the correct man.
Yuki: The funniest character of the show, its hard to be so funny and amazing at the same time.
Mikuru: I think of her as the most tragic character in the show, she can't love anybody, not just Kyon.
Tsuruya: She has such a charming personality, probably one of the most genki characters ever created.

Voted for:
Yuki
Haruhi
Kyon's Sister
Mikuru
If I had to vote for only one it would have been Yuki. SF reading alien that'll take a spear to protect someone is pretty much the pinnacle of cool.
I came to the realization by the end of episode 14 that Haruhi is the most tragic figure in the show. Maybe that was the point to the episode rearranging.
Kyon's Sister is pure sweetness.
Personally like Mikuru alot but then again that's her point. Still don't understand what the time travellers were thinking by sending Mikuru back, aren't they tempting fate by using someone that Kyon will think is very attractive?

Looking back at the first character poll, I only voted for Haruhi, Kyon, Yuki and Mikuru. This time I voted for those four again and added Tsuruya! As for the whys:
Haruhi: You gotta like her attitude of knowing what she wants and not letting anyone get in her way of achieving it (except when Kyon throws a choice barb in her direction.;))
Kyon: Joe Everyman, with a spine. :D Doesn't let Haruhi cramp his style no matter what she does (and comes with his sarcasm-sequencer(tm) switched to full auto). :heh:
Yuki: Lt. Commander Data only wishes he was this cool. :D You just had to melt when Yuki stared at Kyon in episode 11 wanting to win.
Mikuru: The Megami of Moe. 'nuff said! :D
Tsuruya: A barrel of laughs and a sunny disposition! A great combo! :D

I voted for
Suzumiya Haruhi - well, without her, SOS-Dan wouldnt established, right?
Kyon - He kinda makes me laugh lolz
Nagato Yuki - i like the way she talks, acts and abnormal abilities =D
Asahina Mikuru - Ohh, how could we not have a maid in the team! Kawaii desu yo!
Koizumi Itsuki - ok, Espers.... he's a saviour ^^
Kyon's sister - this is kinda ridiculous, but i voted for her because she reminds me of Sia in Shuffle, cause of her voice... well since the voice acting were the same.
Boy does that look familiar... :D

@ steelbound: Yea maybe Haruhi is more tragic than Mikuru, I used to think the same. But episode 14 is the chapter that tells me that Haruhi isn't as tragic as Mikuru lol, because she's much more likely to get Kyon:D

I voted Haruhi, why? Well its not to often you get to see what is basically yourself only a girl run around on the screen in front of you, its almost like being in two places at once, which if you ever hallucinate (Which I do after just waking up) is the coolest thing ever.
I wish I could anti-vote for Yuki, she did absolutely nothing for me and the whole her being an ornament for the room comment by Kyon was a pretty accurate descriptionm since she did jack all most of the time and then occassionally stepped in to fix a problem and mumble some barely understandable (I don't mean confusing terms I mean the voice actress was barely comprehensible and quite mumbly) description as to what happened. God I hate the Rei Ayanami type characters with a passion. I have to say Yuki may just well be the most boring anime character I have ever seen, she was used much better in the novels I think, but barely does anything in the anime.
Nah Yuki has been the security system of the clubroom and the entire school. She has been very active in her job of observation and situation control, she's like an all important background running program.
I'm not a fan of quiet girls too, but Yuki is different she's a slapstick natural lol

That's exactly why I didn't like her, sure she is important but for the most part didn't do anything in the anime, how can I like a character I know nothing about. I know for a fact she gets very interesting in the novels, but that didn't get covered in the series but god I wish it did, then I might have given the series an 8 or even a 9 for a final ranking. Part of the problem with the series that keeps me from giving it a higher ranking is a lot of characters went underdeveloped because the vast amount of character development was cast on Haruhi and Kyon, since the first novel is all about them. It's a shame really, this happens so often with modern anime where characters end up being horribly underdeveloped and you know they are interesting, but they just never get too do anything. It happened in Seed Destiny as well, whats the point of having such a large cast if all you focus on is Kira, Lacus and Shinn. That's why I like older stuff, They are longer, and everybody gets there chance to shine, like in Zeta Gundam or Gaogaigar (Even Mike Sounders has his moments) too name some good examples.
Its even more weird then, Yuki got to present herself in Mysterique sign, Yuuutsu IV, Day of Sagittarius and got on the same stage as Haruhi in Live a Live. She was the character that get the most screen time besides Kyon and Haruhi.
If you want to hate a character for under development, why not Itsuki?
He's part of the SOS-dan, appears so rarely in the show, he only appears once in the OP and he didn't do anything much except for dialogue. Tsuruya probably has as much screen time as he did.

1. Haruhi (its like a must vote)
2. Mikuru <3 Cute and innocent + good body
Mikuru was the star in this anime series for me. Alot of the jokes involve messing around with her. I did feel most connected to this character due to the fact that she objeys all Haruhi's order. She very obidient and easily the best looking character which doesnt hurt. I do feel for her a bit for all the abuse she had >.<
3. Kyon's sister (sia's voice actress ^^ I love Sia :P)
4. Isuki ~ he acts so cool and pretty funny

Yeah I see what you mean, it is weird because despite all that I feel I still know nothing about the character and could care less what happens with her. Throughout all this stuff she still didn't really move and just kept on playing the silent bookworm. I don't deny Yuki is important she's just uninteresting and just kind of there most of the time in the series, I honestly think its the voice actor, my Opera Voice Function sounds less like a robot and doesn't mumble either. I've heard the voice actor has been criticized for other series too, I think it may have been for Tenjho Tenge. Also later on in the novels Yuki does indeed become a very intriguing character.
I was just about to mention Tsuruya, apparently no screen time equals popular and intriguing character according to this poll. Yet somehow Tsuruya still manages to be more interesting than Yuki. I don't think I'll ever be able to understand it, but thanks for pointing out Itsuki and Tsuruya for me.
Well its easier to agree and more fun to do that lol
Yuki is the same in the novels, just that everytime Kyon enters the club room, he either doesn't mention her at all or just leaves a line saying that she's back at her seat. If you missed that line you forgot that she's there, that's exactly how Yuki is and Kyon has said it throughout the novels/show, that you won't notice she's there or she said something unless you put in an effort to look/listen to her.
But in the show it magnifies this effect because Yuki stays in the screen all the time and she's either out of focus or covered by foreground characters. And somehow we notice her because we are such powerful observers and shows that we really put in an effort watching the show lol
So in both novels and the anime, Yuki spent the most of her life doing 'nothing', just that in the novels you totally forget her presence in the room and in the anime we get to see that she's actually there but doesn't matter if we don't notice her.
EDIT: About Yuki's development, actually Yuki is also the 3rd most developed character through the anime after Haruhi and Kyon.
Yuki changed from the usual specs+uniform+cardigan+book combo to a range of other clothes and starts using computers. She found that computers are fun and wants to join the computer club. She found trust in Kyon and always gets his permission before doing something. She also learnt to help instead of ignoring.
Mikuru and Itsuki almost has no development compared to Yuki. Mikuru wasn't too bad, she develops certain feelings for Kyon, but Itsuki is himself from his first appearance to the end, except that maybe he found SOS-dan was fun.
One of the reasons I like Yuki is precisely because you hardly notice she's there. Which is what happens to me most of the time, despite my best efforts occasionally.
We all latch on to the characters we identify with. For example, I don't like Haruhi because she's almost the polar opposite of what I am/like. The greater part of her personality, the not-listening-to-others, the loudness, the willingness to go out in public and promote in a bunnysuit, the imposition on others... I don't get the way she thinks. I admire her philosophy, but look askance at her methods.
But I'm well aware that if I somehow change my worldview and my own personality, it's very possible for me to like Haruhi far more than I do now (which is not much).
In the meantime, I identify with Yuki. She watches, and listens, and observes. She learns. If it's important, she takes action, but otherwise she is content to sit unobtrusively in a corner.
Also, she's an avid reader.
I would disagree on Haruhi with the lack of thinking things through, in fact she plans and thinks through everything she does lol
Like Itsuki said, everything Haruhi does, comes with a reason. She thinks and plans everything she wants to do and she gets them done.
EDIT: Damn lol, I called Haruhi-sama 'he', I deserve punishment
I would disagree on Haruhi with the lack of thinking things through, in fact he plans and thinks through everything she does lol
Like Itsuki said, everything Haruhi does, comes with a reason. She thinks and plans everything she wants to do and she gets them done.
Good point. I suppose what I meant was not thinking about how her actions will bother other people.
Editing post to rectify that.
Oh well... I tried to keep my votes to 3, which was tough.
So I voted
Kyon: He's the reason this anime was funny anyway :p
Mikuru:  MOE ultimate :D
Kyon's sister : MOE ultimate in the making :p
Of course that leaves out Yuki. Now that I think about it, I should have just voted her, too... And maybe Asakura, too. Oh well... I kinda liked most characters, but I thought I had to point out who I liked more than the others.
I voted for Mikuru, Asakura, Itsuki, Tsuruya.
I can't completely deny that I'm not trying to be different by not casting my vote for the other popular main characters (Kyon, Haruhi, Yuki), but I feel that what makes a story great, or rather more than just merely above average would be heavily dependent on how the author fleshes out the supporting cast.
By making the effort to give the second-tier characters a distinctive personality that readers/viewers can identify with without needlessly increasing their screentime or fanservice qoutient is something I would normally desire from the author before I would really fall in love with a story. :)
Mikuru: Mikuru fanservice helped to hook hapless male viewers into the series before the real story revolving around Haruhi and Kyon begins to enthrall viewers/readers. At least it did for me, who began by watching the anime.
Asakura: Asakura's eye-candy for me. Also, although Asakura was a rather shortlived character, her involvement in the plot wasn't minor in the least. (No more eye candy. :upset: )
Itsuki: I would think that Itsuki as a character has a lot of potential for further development, but perhaps the author's desire to leave Itsuki relatively undeveloped would stem from the knowledge that a developed Itsuki might just outshine Kyon. As of now, Kyon obviously is still the most prominent personality in the SOS-dan, with Itsuki filling up the role of very-useful-sidekick-from-behind of his own accord. Come to think of it, Kyon's development is really quite minimal, (Feel free to disagree) coming mostly from "Getting to understand Haruhi and everyone else better". Also, Itsuki's long-winded rants about obscure subjects do raise my interest in those subjects. I wouldn't have read so much about time travel and other scientific principles (Being a social science major) if not for this show, frankly speaking.
Tsuruya: With her minimal screentime, her personality as a character is already so embedded into so many of us. For me, her merciless laughter in Episode 1 directed at Mikuru sealed it for me. Now here's a real minor supporting character that is more than just a good-looking wallflower/yesman. And the author actually has Tsuruya figure out that the members of the SOS-dan aren't normal humans by herself later in the Snowy Mountain Syndrome chapter! OMG LOL-FANG-TAN!
Tsuruya in maid cosplay!!!

Haruhi and Tsuruya: For the exact same reasons as everybody else.
Kyon: The normal/stoic guy stuck in an improbable situation in which he's largely limited to being a sarcastic jerk, but he still manages to care about the rest of the SOS-dan along the way.
Itsuki: His pretentious philosophical babbling doesn't actually explain much, but it does confuse his friends... just like me. I didn't really think he was that hard to understand (maybe related to the epic nerdfests on the very subjects he addresses with my fellow armchair philosophers back in high school), but I applaud him for talking above Kyon's level of imagination constantly. Being Haruhi's yes-man isn't exactly commendable, but he's funny in that role. Could be I'm just backlashing against the hate he got after episode 13, but I found myself liking him a lot more when the whole thing wrapped up.
Yuki: I'm with the 'no character to begin with means that even the slightest twitch counts as development' crowd. She's more interesting when she's in motion because she's so plain at rest. And I gotta admit, I'm a sucker for all that reality hacking. 'Sufficiently advanced magic is indistinguishable from technology'... or maybe 'Sufficiently advanced physics is indistinguishable from magic sufficiently advanced to be indistinguishable from technology.'
Or maybe it should come full-circle. 'Sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from physics sufficiently advanced to be indistinguishable from magic sufficiently advanced to be indistinguishable from technology.'
Lost, that's a bit too negative a way of discussing I guess. lol. For instance, I don't like Kyon's sister, because her voice is still too annonyingly fake for my taste . But I can't blame people for finding her cute.
I agree with you on Shamisen. That's a third role. But I don't agree on Haruhi. Her voice IS impressive all way long, in my humble opinion.
And thats perfectly yours to make. :D Thank you, point taken. As long as we keep cool heads and respect one another's opinions, CG wont have too much work on h-- hands.
Kikaifan makes a true point:
Yuki: I'm with the 'no character to begin with means that even the slightest twitch counts as development' crowd. She's more interesting when she's in motion because she's so plain at rest.
Yep. It just that silent passive face that basically started by looking for acceptance and leadership and decision making at every turn, and at the end being indicative of finding "a voice of her own" ~ starting to be capable of wanting/liking/desiring as it is. Its so much like seeing myself falling in love with the stuff I now love all over again.
Plus I dig this kind of "onset of self-awareness" kinda themes. A little like Rand in WoT; or so many other main characters in books/animes ~ start out ordinary and all, and then get special powers. Only, with Yuki, those special powers are what we take forgranted.
You might say I've learnt something about treasuring my independence from Yuki. And I do like quiet girls.

I find it interesting that Kunikida and Taniguchi combined have fewer votes than Shamisen, a cat that only had limited screentime in the first episode. Sure it's a talking cat, and a rare male calico besides, but still, that's just sad and pathetic. :heh:
Anyway, I voted for Yuki, and Yuki alone. I like all the characters, but she's by far my favorite. Despite being little more than a decoration for the club room half the time, she still managed to stand out. The scenes she did play a key role were, in my opinion, the highlights of the series.

Heh... Kunikida's votes all come from people who voted for every single character anyway, and so do three quarters of Taniguchi's. :(
I kind of agree with you. I was tempted to vote for the ENOZ girls (the drummer is so cute ^^; ), but I realised that I couldn't really consider characters who are shown for a brief few minutes with only a few spoken lines to be up there with my favourites out of the entire 14 episode series. They just don't contribute enough to the show, especially when the other characters are as well realised and interesting as the ones in this series. It's not so bad with them as it is with the cat, but that's the way I look at it. Other people have different criteria though, I suppose, so that's just how it is. In a way it's similar to what people say about the rankings from 1 to 10 being subjective in the episode polls.

Yeah I know I probably voted for too many characters, but it's hard to resist voting for some people. I have an err weird guilt complex, I think that's the best way to put it. Still a few characters do stand out.
Yuki: Sure she's the silent type, but she's quite interesting despite that. She really shines in certain episodes like well episode 10 for example. Plus I admit seeing her in the magician outfit early on kind of leaned me towards her.
Haruhi: She's rather bold and as you learn more about she becomes one of the better female leads. Let's just that episode 12 helps her character a lot.
Kyon: His commentary on various events helps make the series. He's like the audience member watching a movie wanting to comment on what's happening come to life.
Tsuraya: Let's just that she's extremely cute and adds a good level of fun factor when she appears on the screen.
Some I voted for due to cuteness factor (Kyon's Sister) and fanservice factor (Mikuru). Of course there are times other girls such as the ones I mentioned earlier can look rather nice.
For me it was Yuki, Mikuru and Asakura.
Mikuru:love:because she is so cute and kind. Very high Onee Chan Factor. I liked the moments when she was with Kyon's little sister. Cute + timetravel ability + high Onee Chan Factor =>Vote from me
Of course, whenever things seem to get dangerous, her Onee Chan Factor drops below zero and she becomes a person you can't help wanting to protect.:heh:
Asakura because *me fears*. I have a weakness for cute girls with sharp weapons who can scare my eyes to the point of popping out:love:. At first I also liked her because she was so caring and considering towards Haruhi, Asakura is a good and responsible class president after all (also + points). And I was really suprisingly excited in episode 10 when she was the one inviting Kyon to the after school meeting:love:. Of course, the following incident with her also scared my eyes all the way to outer space:love: *me still fears*. I wish she had a few more episodes...
I wish I could anti-vote for Yuki
:eyespin: *ignores anti Yuki rant*:eyespin: :eyespin:
If I had to vote for only one it would have been Yuki. SF reading alien that'll take a spear to protect someone is pretty much the pinnacle of cool.
*me agrees*:love:Yuukiiii:love:  :love:Yuki is absolute win!
Yuki is the one I like the most. Super reliable person, the baseball episode was a good preview of how cool she is:eyespin: Yuki!!!Coollll!!>_<. And she's also caring and protective. Onee Chan Factor skyrocketed in episode 10:love:Having a super reliable onee chan protect you is the best feeling after all:love:. And at the end of the last episode:
"Will another one like Asakura attack me:love:?....(ups, I mean)...:upset:?"
"Don't worry. I won't let them.":love: :love: :love: Khyaaaaaa>_<:love::love::love:
Onee Chan Factor skyrocketingX999^9
If I only had one vote, it would definitely be Yuki.
But I also like Mikuru and Asakura. *Is still traumatized by episode 10*, and a tearful Mikuru beam is completely irresistible after all:love::heh:. So I also voted for them since this is multiple.
I would also like to mention Haruhi, I came to like her a little. In the end of episode 9 when she laid her clothe on Kyon so he wouldn't freeze as much was a cute thing. It slightly bumped up her Onee Chan Factor, but it's nowhere near Yuki or Mikuru so I left out Haruhi.
And Itsuki:heh:. Oh wow, I personally think Itsuki helped make the movie in episode 1 so exceptional. His voice acting in the movie was exceptionally....LAME:heh:, I felt it was so brilliantly funny how lame he was in that movie I almost considered voting for him:heh: (well, not really but it was fun nonetheless)
I wish I'd have voted Yuki and Asakura along with my other choices... *boohoo rant*
>_<;;
It's okay senpai! I can share my vote with you. We'll just say my Yuki vote was from me and my Asakura vote was from you:heh:
I'm sure it can work out.:eyespin:

I had already put way too much thought into making my selections when it suddenly dawned on me that I should pay attention to the title of this poll. It isn't necessarily asking me to vote for characters who I thought were the most important, best developed, grew the most, hit most moe~ buttons, etc. - it is asking me to choose my "favorite" characters. That made it much easier! As with the first poll, I'm limiting myself to three votes:
Kyon - IMO, the success of the entire series hinged upon Kyon's role as observer and narrator. Great "everyman" character, and the voice acting was simply brilliant. He was a favorite from the start.
Yuki - Episode #4 locked her in as a favorite. Since then Yuki has ruled, rocked and conquered all opposition. "Don't worry. I won't let them."
Haruhi - I did not vote for her in the first poll (Mikuru held this place instead). Haruhi was obviously a great character, but her then-unexplained abusive behavior and arrogant demeanor in the early episodes kept her from being a favorite. But the last three episodes moved her onto the same level as Kyon and Yuki.
Honorable mentions go to: Tsuraya for pure unadulterated genki-ness, and Asakura for providing one of the biggest OMGWTF!! moments of the series.
at first i liked Kyon but not enough to vote for him, but after all his reactions, comments and abuse from haruhi, he really grew on me
Haruhi, do i need another reason apart from plain awesome
Yuki, my fav character of the series, i liked her when she was quite and i think shes even better now that emotions are coming into play, plus the guitar bit truly sealed Yuki as a godess for me ^-^

Wow, now I feel kind of bad trashing on your favorite character. Although I couldn't read any of, the point that you really like Yuki still came across.

I totally would have voted for the Computer Society President if he had been an option. He was a pathetic bug being squashed by Haruhi when he appeared and a victim of Yuki's schemes (or whatever) in Mysterique Sign, but Day of Sagittarius made him the only person who has EVER tried to stand up to Haruhi's madness (not that I don't like Haruhi's character, but he still gets mega points for it). Even Kyon just tries to cajole her onto less dangerous paths. Okay, it was with a rigged game, backhanded and risk-minimizing, but even with such a cowardly strategy he manages to seem tragically gallant to me considering what he was up against.
Also, he was in the Character Crossrating thing that was... wherever I saw it. That has to mean he counts as a real character!
Yes, Arimfe was very passionate... though in a language I'm not familiar with :) :) :)

Deprived of bed time, i had regretably failed to include Tsuruya on my check list.. If she is a sales person, i would have bought anything she sells blindly(begins drooling in fantasy world).
Voted for Yuki, mikuru, ryoko, haruhi
Suprisingly yuki is actually in the lead. I guess the past few episodes really upped her coolness factor. Well, given the increasing number of yuki avatars, i shouldnt be surprised....
Well, even the author of the story, Tanigawa Nagaru, said his favourite character is Yuki. Its easy to see why, since she's giving her the most juicy scenes.

My votes:
Suzumiya Haruhi: How could you not vote for her, she brought all the others together. Loveable but strange, weird but strangely makes sense. Many words could be used to describe her. Let's just say I'm glad she created the universe and not anyone else. And she definately picked the right guy.
Kyon: I mean come on, ya have to vote for the guy. Haruhi has dragged him ragged through hell and back wether she realizes it or not and he's still there, he could have easily left and said 'screw it, the world can end' but not only does he stay (although someone forced to once he learns the truth) but he goes out of his way for Haruhi (although his main interest seems to reside in Mikuru).
And besides that, he's basically the focus of the whole of the first episodes(in chronological order) and his narration is funny as hell. "Freud would have a field day with this!" :D
Shamisen: He's a cat, cats are cool, 'nough said. :p

1st Character Poll:
Haruhi, Yuki, Kyon, Tsuruya
2nd Character Poll:
Haruhi, Yuki, Kyon, Tsuruya
Haruhi
Haruhi's personality has developped nicely through the course of the show. There's just something so magnetic about her personality despite her megalomaniac ways. I attribute this to Episode 13 or Novel 1 - Chapter 6 since that's the first time I really loved Haruhi. If I could vote for her more than once, I'd do so without hesitation.
Yuki
It takes a lot of effort to make a character who's almost inanimate come alive. I've never really liked quiet characters with the hidden power to overpower without breaking a sweat, Rei Ayanami being the most notable culprit. However, for some reason, Yuki has become a really enjoyable character. Maybe it's because she does develop (albeit very slowly) into a more sociable and a more human character.
Kyon
His scathing sarcasm and overall realistic/cynical personality is the other dark energy in this show. I've really enjoyed laughing at his remarks and thoughts.
Tsuruya
The queen of Genki herself cannot be denied a vote :heh:. A very fun character to watch and is an awesome susbstitute source of energy when Haruhi isn't around.
So I've voted EXACTLY the same as I did before :p
Itsuki still bugs me, Mikuru is still one-dimensional, Kyon's side-kicks bounce off the story without making much of an impact, and Shamisen made no real appearance after episode 1. I guess it was relatively easy for me to choose :heh:, although I was tempted to vote for the ENOZ girls.
What I'm surprised about is Tsuruya ahead of Mikuru in the polls, I'd think all the Mikuru fans from the first poll would have supported her :p

My favorites still haven't changed since the beginning of the series. It's not like I haven't gotten to like other characters in the latter episode, but somehow their positions on my favorites chart kind of stayed the same. Though I stopped getting as annoyed at Mikuru as I used to be, but mostly cause I now feel sympathy for her, since I kind of got very simular treatment that she gets from Haruhi thanks to a friend of mine a few weeks ago.
As for the characters I voted for: still Kyon and Haruhi. Haruhi because I just love her insanity, it seems so random but at the same time there is method to her madness. And Kyon is still my hero for his sarcastic commentary. I think the two of them combined produced some of the most random/interesting lines I've ever heard in an anime.
I'm already sensing the agonizing withdrawal symptoms from the other posters here. Need... more... Yuki... um, Haruhi .... uhhh, Mikuru ... (drowns in a vat of ENOZ)

I voted for Haruhi, Tsuruya, Yuki, and this time Kyon. :)
Mikuru is cute, but just a tad too over-cute for my tastes, and, quite frankly, aside from her cuteness and breast size, she doesn't have much going for her. Sorry, Mikuru fans. Gomen. :heh:
It was impossible for me to choose between Lolfang-tan and Haruhi, so I voted for both of them :D

So the top 5 at this time are...
5. Asahina Mikuru
4. Tsuruya
3. Kyon
2. Suzumiya Haruhi
1. Nagato Yuki
Why am I not suprised? :heh:

Kyon: Without him, I would not bother to watch this or read the novels. He is my hero and I aspire to perfect my laziness to the mastery he has over his own :D
Asahina-san: Kyon's favorite girl is my favorite girl. I mean, seriously, how boring would that room look if there wasn't a beautiful maid in it all the time they're meeting :P
Haruhi: Do I even need to bother explaining?
Yuki: always liked her character, but the moment that turned from like to love is when she was lead guitar in the magician's outfit. The shock/hilarity/pure AWESOMENESS of it made it golden.
Koizumi: I think he's the most overlooked character of the S.O.S.-dan, but he definately has his moments. His constant ass-kissing is so disgusting that I love it (your excellency suzumiya is the best :D), and without him we wouldn't have the lone island syndrome. His comedy relief with Kyon I'd place 2nd only to Kyon/Haruhi.
Shamisen: random talking in ep 1 ftw, I want a 2nd season if solely to learn why he talked for a few lines (if it was just ventriloquism or yuki's version of a joke I'll be dissapointed ;_; )

2.Kyon - poor Kyon was bullied by Suzumiya everyday

4.Asahina Mikuru - that voice....
5.Kyon sister - aw she so cute!!!

Kyon and Haruhi for me. Kyon is the funniest stoic (aka lazy) character ive ever seen. I'd say the he's 3/4 of the show's comedy. I wish i could be like him.
And Haruhi, who is responsible for Kyon's hilarious comments. They're a perfect combination, i say.

Kyon's very funny. If we ever have a thread entitled "What is your favorite quote from the anime?", we would probably be flooded by Kyon's pearls of wisdom.
Emiri : I believe it was Honduras
Haruhi : Honduras, huh. I see.
Kyon : "I see", my ass! I doubt you even know where it is. Uh.. was it somewhere below Mexico?
Muahaha. My vote goes to Kyon and Yuki.

I find it amusing that Haruhi and Kyon are tied. I feel kind of bad not voting for Mikuru now, but then again I still think her only purpose for existing is to be cute. And of course Tsuruya is everyone's favorite supporting character~ Go Tsuruya, go~
Voted: Haruhi, Kyon, Yuki, Tsuruya (favorite!!!).

They have been side by side pretty much from the start (I am not 100% sure, but I think they were tied at some point earlier in the poll)
Yuki's small but solid lead has been another constant so far; Along with Tsuruya and Mikuru, because both have pretty much never changed positions since the beginning.
For me, the surprise here is Kyon's sister. Who is currently beating both Itsuki and Ryoko. I guess that the now legendary 'Loli in the bag' scene was too much to handle for those two. :heh: :heh:

my vote is Haruhi--Kyon....Kyon's so damn lucky a Goddess fell for him, x.X
I'll just use my ESP lvl.2: Clairvoyance to predict the future outcome~ heheheheh...
One of the reasons I'm figuring Kyon and Haruhi stay "tied" is that they're a complementary pair - kind of like Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck, or Gracie and George, ... Abbot & Costello ...
Without each other, their personalities are kind of unbalanced (imo, of course).
Well, I didn't vote for Haruhi, and probably someone else didn't vote for Kyon :p That's why statistics need to be examined in depth.
eh.. don't mind me... I'm desperately trying to find something that will engage me as much as Haruhi has but having no luck. I suspect I'll be jaded about anime for a while. I started watching Ouran and am taking a look at Tsuyokiss ... which are both quite entertaining but they seem fairly pale at the moment. I'm even having trouble paying attention to Utawarerumono which I'm fairly fond of. ah well....
I'll just keep storing them for later.

But in the meantime, Haruhi has completely spoiled us :heh:

Strangely enough I feel that way too, that feeling is probablt only limited to haruhiists and those who have REALLY enjoyed the show.
I just find that no other characters are able to engage me as much (except for Ginko) as the characters in this show =/ Maybe it's time for an anime break...
You know, I've always been saying that the minds of all Haruhists are united by Haruhi-sama.
Those who are true Haruhists think exactly the same.
Its either in our genes, we are born to become Haruhists or Haruhi-sama selected us like the espers, we suddenly come to realise the same picture.

Hmm, I'm not a Haruhist (Proud Kyonist), but I can't seem to get into any more good anime's (not even Detective Conan is entertaining as much any more *gasp*).
Maybe it's cause I can't find a male lead as cool or witty as Kyon.
Kyonism, Yukism, are branches of Haruhiism and your beliefs do contain traces of Haruhiism.
But Haruhi-sama owns all who worship anything in her universe, you guys are still Haruhiists.

2006-07-17, 22:23
Nah, we all know who's really in charge. ;)
Kyon is the god, Haruhi-sama is just a demi-god.
Actually I think I have to rephrase it this way:
Haruhi-sama owns everything in the SOS-dan, worshipping her members = worshipping her.
Originally Haruhiism wasn't founded to worship Haruhi-sama because she's the one in charge, not because she's god, she's not really a god too. In the show she's not really a god, yes, but we worship her as a god.

224 votes and pretty much everyone remains the same. This is by far the most 'static' poll I have ever seen. :heh:
I knew Yuki would be number 1, but I kept wishing Haruhi-sama would be instead lol
The poll has some strange results though, Tsuruya is the most obvious one.
Shamisen appeared for less than 3 minutes in episode 1, but has more than combined votes of Taniguchi, Kunikida and Emiri. I thought Emiri would get a little more votes, because she's actually really cute lol. When she comes to my mind, I always remember this line from her as well: "Watash' shinpai...", "I'm worried". She sounded really cute saying that for some reason.
I also expected more votes for Imouto and the ENOZ girls.

Personally, I think the ENOZ girls should get their own series. Maybe a relatively realistic comedy/drama about an all female rock band in Japan. Not an idol series, mind you, but a series about a serious band that doesn't even consider the idol route. Have them graduate and move to Osaka instead of Tokyo. Haruhi could make the occasional guest appearance and insist, despite the fact that she's never around, that she is their manager. (Of course, their real manager resents this.)
I could go on and on. :)

I had to impose a lot of self-discipline in my votes... ENOZ simply didn't have enough screen time (one ep and one background shot in other ep). Otherwise, I'd just have to vote for all the choices and then write-in a few.

I just got myself acquainted with book 6...
And had found new respect for Tsuruya.:)
spoilers on LoL-Fang-Tan
First, she is rich beyond belief. Her family own several holiday homes, and until recently possess a private ski resort. Kyon wondered how many illegally things her parents have done to get that rich... in jest, I hope.
Second, she already knows something is different about Mikuru by observation. Indeed, she already knows that something is extraordinary about the whole SOS dan... except Kyon, wholm she considers "the same as me, because you smell the same".:heh:
However, she isn't one to be nosy. If they are keeping secrets from her, it is for a good reason. Thus, Tsuruya just became any superhero's ideal girl. :D

Concerning the "smell"...
There's an interesting theory that the farther away someone was born from you, the more you can sense it -- I've actually noticed it though I think it has to do more with subliminal cultural clues. Imagine now, standing next to someone who was born in the Betelgeuse system (assume they look like a normal human) which is about 300 light years from Earth. This little idea was used in Hitchhiker's Guide when Ford is explaining to a barkeeper that the Earth was about to be destroyed. Rather than think Ford a loony, the effect hit the barkeep like a sack of bricks that this person was so alien that they must be telling the truth.
I like Tsuruya's metaphoric description of her feeling... "you smell the same".

It's gonna be Kyon--the TRUTH--all the way. Without his cynical sarcastic wit, the appreciation of Haruhi herself would have declined. He's the most well-rounded and developed character, which makes sense; the series comes mostly from his perspective. Oh, man, I remember watching episode one without having looked up any info on it. It was really bizarre, but I knew as soon as the narration started it was an amateur movie, and Kyon's narration helped me get through it.
He's brilliant, I tell you. I haven't enjoyed a male lead in anime so much since Jinto from the Seikai series, and that's a tough act to follow.
All the characters in this series are quite likeable, but the magic wouldn't be there if Kyon weren't there every step of the way. He's the Minnesota Miracle Man, you know. :p
Yes, Kyon is awesome, to me, its because the story would never have existed in any way without him. He himself is the many reasons why this story exists.
Kyon is also special because he is more than just a male lead, or a narrator. The story doesn't revolve around him, but written in a perspective, his perspective, which makes the story his.
The main character of the show is Haruhi, but Tanigawa Nagaru used a brilliant 1st person perspective of Kyon to tell her story. This makes the story theirs, a story of two people from one perspective.
The novels/show connects with the readers/audience, because it is shown in this perspective, a single person's perspective. All humans are individuals and we all see the world in our single perspectives. Most other stories are told by 3rd person and we see from multiple perspectives, it doesn't connect with the audience as strongly as a 1st person's perspective.
EDIT: There are also many other reasons why this story wouldn't have existed without Kyon, but they would be heavy spoilers lol

sry if its been said but why is Itsuki Koizumi in italics? i voted for him, i feel like we didn't get to know him enough and i really like his admirable character. actually hes the one who got me intrested in this anime. very good looking characters....
Kyon is a given, yuki grew on me, and mikuru annoys me to no ends.

It's probably because you voted for Itsuki. All of the characters I've voted for turned out in italics too. Nice to see that Itsuki actually got someone into the show, most people want to lynch the guy :p

DAMNIT! I ment to vote for Mikuru but i hit Yuki by mistake! can anyone fix this!
My favorite from the start is Nagato Yuki. Learning more about her character in the middle to later episodes only made me enjoy her episode 1 debut that much more :)! But of course, just about all the characters in this series won me over, so I couldn't help but vote in a few more favorites.
I voted for Nagato Yuki because I like her mysteriousness...and would love to learn more about her. Koizumi Itsuki because he has the looks :D. Voted Kyon for being such a dramatic narrator.
...And of course, Haruhi for being so unique.
they are all lovable characters, but how come tsuruya beat mikuru :twitch:
^ Don't ask to understand the irrationalities of this world :p

Of course and now that I read that I'm very depressed about myself :uhoh:
BTW You are not the one who is rooting for Primula in the anime saimoe thread after your harsh criticism about loli character?
You sure are a great example of rightness and coherence...

I was thinking lolicons when I said that, and I think that I was also frustrated about another character losing, especially to an overrated meh character like Kyon's sister. (don't remember who, though)
I like Primula, and this seems to be more of a popularity contest than a moe contest, so I voted for her.

1. Get screencapped by many blogs for Loli-in-a-bag.
2. Portrayed "Itsuki's sister" in the SOS-dan's movie.
3. Played on the SOS-dan baseball team, hitting a home run in the process.
4. Dominated at Old Maid.
5. Learned the secret of growing up like Mikuru (green peppers)
6. Indirectly helped Kyon to solve the Lone Island "murder" mystery (by poking around the food plates, causing Kyon to notice the plate with the leftover carrots, knife & fork.)
7. Completely deceived the butler by informing him of the "attack" on Itsuki.
8. Used Kyon as a trampoline.
9. Sychronized toothbrushing.
10. "Borrowed" scissors, with that cute knock-on-head-while-sticking-tongue-out gesture.
11. Fed the (formerly) talking cat.1. Attempt many times to get Haruhi to say One. Single. Word. Fail.
2. Attempt to murder the narrator/male lead. Fail.
3. Battle with Yuki. Get completely pwned - Fail.
4. "Moved to Canada." Didn't actually move so much as disintegrate. Fail.
5. Get screencapped by many blogs for getting her "powerful" death-blow stopped by a barehanded Yuki. So the screencap that launched a thousand blog entries is of Asakura = Fail.
6. Herd the boys out of the class so they couldn't watch Haruhi's striptease routine. Yeah, thanks a lot, Asakura. You probably cost Haruhi a lot of tips - no wonder she refuses to say One. Single. Word. to you.
7. Received an AA+ rating from Taniguchi. Top-rated by the school nampa - that's gotta count for something, right? :innocent: Which character = Fail?
Vote:
Haruhi Suzumiya
Kyon
Nagato Yuki
Koizumi Itsuki

Things Kunikida did that Imouto did not:
1. Was born male.
2. Made Taniguchi look even dumber than he does on his own.
3. Insinuated that Kyon was interested in Haruhi.
Things Imouto did that Kunikida did not:
1. Go on the island trip and then FAIL to figure out that it was all a ploy.
2. FAIL to be Kunikida.
3. FAIL to be Taniguchi's friend.
4. FAIL to cut Kyon out of a conversation with Tsuruya.
5. FAIL to not wear hair ornaments.
As this completely unbiased list of well-weighted, comparable achievements demonstrates, Kunikida is a much more important and successful character than Imouto.

I voted for Yuki only, since I don't really like the idea of voting for multiple characters, especially since the vote counts between the 3 main leads are so close. ;)

Yeah, but listing a bunch of trivial actions of Imouto against important things Asakura failed to do and declaring Asakura a failure makes it seem more like an argument about their competence, where it's misleading. I guess I like Asakura enough that I didn't take it as a joke. My bad.
Personally I'm surprised her following is so small just because it's so common for villains to rival main characters in popularity, to say nothing of tertiaries like Imouto.
Personally I'm surprised her following is so small just because it's so common for villains to rival main characters in popularity, to say nothing of tertiaries like Imouto.I agree that villains are often popular, but the differences in SHnY are; the series in no way centers around said villainy, there's no simmering rivalry, and Ryoko simply disappears - she is totally absent from the middle of Ep 10 onwards in aired order, and it's even worse in chronological order. The popular villains are vanquished in the final or penultimate episodes, if they are defeated at all.
We'll agree to disagree on the tertiari-ness of Imouto. I'd call it secondari-ness instead :)
The only villain in this show is the situation itself that they must confront. Even Ryoko is simply confronting the situation in her own way. Hardly villainous.. more like innocent about the concept of death.

True; since she IS a data entity, Ryoko admitted herself that she knew nothing of the concept of death or pain for that matter. For that reason, it's not totally her fault for trying to rush her job a bit.

What she knows about death is immaterial; she's so singular in her purpose that I doubt a personal understanding of death would change her actions, and she has to at least have understood the significance we assign it given how well-developed her ability to empathize and interact with humans was.
But I don't think this is really about whether she has evil intent as much as her role in the series. She's a potent antagonist who menaces the main character, so calling her a villain seems appropriate even if she doesn't act out of malice.
Hmm, this talk of villains gets me to thinking. "Classic" villains are established early, present many threats to the hero, and are thwarted by the hero and his allies in the end.
So how about Haruhi as the villain? It may sound strange, but work with me here. C'mon...http://img172.imageshack.us/img172/1388/necktiext8.th.png (http://img172.imageshack.us/my.php?image=necktiext8.png)
"I am your father."
"No. No. That's not true. That's impossible."
"Search your feelings. You know it to be true..."
"Nooooooooooooooo...."
The villain gains power, and holds our hero and the Scooby Gang in her thrall. Then in Melancholy 4 there's this weird plot line where Ryoko Hinckley Jr. tries to assassinate Kyon Reagan in order to impress Haruhi Foster, but Nancy Nagato stops the attempt and eliminates Ryoko.
Once that's over with, in Melancholy 6 the villain unleashes her strongest threat against the world to date, but Kyon with the aid of the Scooby Gang manage to thwart the villain, with a kiss, no less.
OK, then there are episodes where the Good Guys go on excursions to baseball games and deserted islands, play computer games, and join rock bands with the villain. Not exactly your usual Scooby Gang vs. Villain interactions, but I did say things would be strange. :)So there are problems like lack of evil intent, and hanging out with the villain everyday in the clubhouse is weird too. But I think we could open new vistas in The Analysis of Haruhi Suzumiya with this bold new interpretation... :heh:

It works the other way around, too :p
I've compared these two characters to Don Quixote and Sancho Panza elsewhere, and the more I think about it, the more it totally works. Although Kyon's quite a bit smarter and less permissive than Sancho ;)

Well Don Quixote's malencholy comes with later on when his body fails him... before he feels the indignation to chivery ideal and sets forth to right that. I thought of the same thing as fatpianoboy at first of Haruhi but comes to conclude her as a tragic greek heroine in a greek comedy.
My votes went out to:
Nagato-san (first and foremost)
Haruhi (kind of had to in my opinion)
Asahina-san (she's just too cute)
Kyon (laid back, main character, story is told through his eyes)
Nagato was first and foremost because... I really don't know. The fact that she's the crazy ass humanoid interface that could get stabbed multiple times and not die, do almost anything at super human speed, recite incantations that do some of the craziest things, and in my opinion was the best character in the show. I don't know, maybe I'm just partial to the silent yet extremely off the wall types that wear glasses (At least for the first few episodes)
Haruhi, well, I don't think I can really exclude her, can I? The show is mostly centered around her. Eccentric, God-like, almost always detached from reality, she was a funny character. Sure, she was really annoying at times and you sometimes wanted to rip her head off, but in the end she turned out alright.
Asahina-san was just plain cute. She was one of those characters that you just wanted to hug like a teddy bear. She was nervous, sometimes inept, more than often than not being used at the whim of Haruhi, she carried a lot of the comic relief to the table and made me smile.
Kyon is just an overall cool guy. The story being told in his point of view, he provided a unique perspective that would not have been achieved if it was your standard 3rd person setup. I haven't seen many shows with a first person viewpoint to them and it was pretty refreshing to see that in this anime. That, and the fact that I thought this guy was a badass. That last move he made in the last episode, saying some things that I never thought would ever really fly with a girl before you kiss her, well. Actions do speak louder than words at this point.
Long? Yes. Just deal with it ;)
Voted for Haruhi and Mikuru.
Haruhi because, well... Maybe because of her weirdness and insane ideas. And an overall fun character.
Well, Mikuru... she's just too cute, I guess. :P Cannot resist that. And the way she starts shivering in fear when Haruhi is about to present one of her new ideas is hilarious.

My favorite character is Tsuruya since she's sociable and "megas" cute.
My second is Yuki especially after... episode 10. The scene where she grabs Asakura's knife was just plain...cool. I like how she's a quiet observer that solves problems when the need arises. Oh yeah, and we can't forget the stare she gave at Kyon in episode 11 when she asked for permission to alter the program.
Third is Kyon: just have to love his narration skills.
kyon is the best and is the main character, story is told through his eyes.

yuki and haruhi is awesome...i like kyon too...i can relate to him somehow just without the alien esper time traveler part...
Yuki
Because she's the best character by far: knows who to fight, when and where to move; intelligent and is an alien, how could she be better? :heh:
Haruhi
Because being normal is BORING! :D and she's our goddess
Tsuruya-san
ROLFMAO ~nyoron! cute, meido suit, charming and has humor sense.
Haruhi - Obvious as to why I chose her. :p
Yuki - After seeing her in episodes 10 and 11 how could I not choose her, plus I liked her from the begining.
Mikuru - So sweet and inoccent
Tsuruya - I give props to the little loli sister, not much apearance but still, such a loveable character
Shamisen - What can i say, I loev kitties =(^_^)=
Haruhi, Yuki, Tsuruya. thanks ;D
KOIZUMI. 8D Why is it that no one likes him? He's so loveable. <3
And Tsuraya, she's pretty awesome herself.

Agreed. I am bothered that Koizumi didn't rank higher than either Tsuruya or Mikuru?
Tsuruya, while perky and quirky, doesn't really do all that much. She's attractive and not much else.
Mikuru, while the source of much humor, really turns me of with her moe-appeal. She's funny mostly because of what Haruhi does to her. She's much too passive to interest me.
Aside from Yuki, Koizumi is about the only real thinker in the bunch. While Yuki is just great at raw processing power and has all sorts of unbelievable powers, she's not really good at introspection or philosophical speculation. He's the guy who peels back ever more layers away from the surface of the Haruhi universe to reveal ever deeper mysteries. He's perfectly in spirit with the open-ended wonder of the show.
He makes you ask. What is Haruhi really? What exactly is Mikuru's purpose? Who is Nagato? What is reality? He teases Kyon into coming ever-closer to the fact Kyon and Haruhi have got the hots for each other. Mostly this is hilarious because Kyon refuses to comprehend that he might like such a crazy person.
Koizumi is the most under-appreciated member of the crew. You wonder what kind of long-suffering sort of guy lives under a smiling mask, keeps Haruhi's life in order and pretty much realizes that he's not going register as blip on anyone's romantic radar. He hides his emotions so well that he probably can't distinguish himself from his facade anymore. The man has got character.
A philosopher with an iron will. You got to respect that.

I voted for:
Haruhi Suzumiya- C'mon now if it wasn't her there would be no show. She IS the show! Without her this show would be just like any other bland anime series. She's what makes it special. Although, at times she can be kind of annoying in the sense that she's so pushy. Her idea of the world evolving around her gets old at times (even though technically it does). I love the way she just doesn't care what anybody around her thinks about her, she just does what she wants without a care in the world, free.
Kyon- As with Haruhi, without him there would be no series. He's a fantastic narrator. His dry sarcastic remarks go along great with Haruhi's carefree attitude. It's understandable why he's the only human Haruhi chooses to associate herself with.
Koizumi Itsuki: He's quiet and reserved, but there's just something interesting about him that I can't even discribe.
Didn't vote for:
Mikuru Asahina: She is definitely one of the most pointless characters I have ever witnessed in my entire anime watchin live. She's just too weak and baby-like. In small doses it would be cute, but it never changes so it's almost skip past her annoying. I feel the only reason she's in the series is the same reason she's in the SOS Brigade: she's cute and looks good in the outfits. I wish she'd just vanish.
Yuki Nagato: She's a great character and all, but besides her being an alien hybird, there's nothing special about her. Every anime has a girl that sits there mysteriously quiet, observing what's going on.
Suzumiya Haruhi- Just I love her ^^

I've never thought of that. It's definitely an eye-opener for me.
You have to realize that Koizumi loses games to Kyon but retains a scholarly interest in them. He's in it for purely intellectual reasons, not to trump Kyon.
In the novels, Kyon wonders if Koizumi isn't deliberately losing to him or if he really just sucks that bad.

I always figured it was an example of personality strengths. While Koizumi could understand and to an extent explain complicated things Kyon was simple far better at reacting to tactical situations. In a sense its almost Kyon's "magical power", unfortunately this ability to react also seems to supress Kyon's urge to understand what he's reacting to.
as for the poll: Haruhi, no exceptions.

yeah, somebody mentioned voting for everybody and I figured 'hey! Great idea!'.
Iunno, in the end I think I could have gone without voting for Kimidori Emiri or the Enoz girls, though.
Also want to say to Twisted Reality, thanks for being an advocate for Koizumi. I always thought he was an interesting character and a valuable component of both the SOS Brigade and the story as a narrative, but the coherency and emphasis of your argument really helps to make me stop and think and give him credit where it is due.

I've voted for Kyon
Kuroyuki
2008-02-14, 20:27
I voted for;
Kyon - the man of SHnY, and someone everyone can technically relate to. The thing I most like about him is that his name was never revealed, though I really want to know it. Personal aside, he reminds me a bit of myself during high school. I was very sarcastic as well.
Mikuru - she was the original reason I watched this anime, since I saw a picture of her was got interested in it. I also love how much Kyon and his sister absolutely adore her. But to tell the truth, she is in my top 5 because we got to see the absolutely stunning adult version of her, and see the fact that she loved Kyon as much as he loved her.
Imoutou-chan - I really wish I had a younger sister. She is exactly how I want my daughter to be like. I want to know her name as well.
Tsuruya - I loved the fact that they introduced her, since she was like a sister for Kyon. She also understands how Haruhi thinks, when she didn't tell Kyon about the filming during 'Someday in the Rain'. It helps that she's like my best friend from high school.
Yuki - For the longest time, I adored Ryoko more, but after their battle, I really like Yuki. I also started liking Yuki during the end of 'Mysterique Sign', when we see the beautiful vision of her with her hair billowing in the wind as she was reading.
Those who didn't my vote;
Haruhi - she awesome, but in my mind, she didn't compare with Mikuru or Yuki, since the character I liked best was Kyon, and Haruhi was a little too assertive for my taste. My sister believes that the moment Kyon started talking to Haruhi about her hair was the moment she took interest in him. I agree, but I personally still didn't like her attitude, and abuse of Kyon and Mikuru.
Ryoko - She tried to kill Kyon, 'nough said.
Etc.'s - Their roles didn't warrant a vote.

I voted Haruhi! She's the heroine after all...
Haruhi is my favorite character and God... She's just such a awesome character.
I didn't vote for anyone else I thought one vote was enough. =/ Really for me no one else deserved a vote as much as Haruhi did.
I voted for the following:
Haruhi: There shouldnt be a reason I have to explain this one, oh and Im a Haruhi-ist.
Kyon: There isnt an explanation needed for Kyon either :)
Yuki: Smart and calculating, a bit random at times..., but she's an important staple in the SOS Brigade, plus she saved Kyon's life!
Mikuru: Very important character in the show, very cute and charming at most times, funny in the others (Mikuru Beam!).
Tsuruya: She's like Mikuru's sister, but not really, she's a pretty important character and is there in some/most of the scenes.
ENOZ Girls: Cute and musical, I dont care if they were in only one ep, they rock!

1) Kyon - seriously do I need to explain this?
2) Koizumi - Sorry but I love him :heh: One he's adorable and two I love how he makes Kyon so uncomfortable. Being as esper is just an extra for me at this point.
As much as I love the girls I just voted for the guys. Though Yuki gets props for her fight and extreme game play!

I voted for 3 girls:
1. Haruhi: She's cute, athletic, beautiful, smart, and eccentric. What more to ask?
2. Nagato: Well... she's cute, genius, extremely strong, but in other hand calm and cold. She's just too cool!
3. Asakura Ryoko: A psycho-minded Data-something-interface... @_@ but she made a very strong impression in me because she tried to kill Kyon once.

... well I guess this makes me an exception... the anime made me dislike Mikuru and become a bit too obsessed with Yuki... also, the novels kinda made me hate Kyon...
For the record, my other three picks were Haruhi, Shamisen(seriously) and Taniguchi...
What? I need reasons? Fine...
Haruhi: The reason I even decided to give the series a try.
Shamisen: Not-so-subtle poke at the fact that Haruhi has a knack for picking out the unusual at random. Plus, Itsuki in cat form during Sighs, so bonus!
Taniguchi: I seem to be an exception here, as well... I only started to like Taniguchi because of the novels.
haruhi: oh she maybe a bit mean and pushy sometimes. but who doesn't love a little bit of haruhi in their lives. :p
mikuru: plain and simple! cute, understanding, and kind to everyone. I would certainly love to have someone like her as a friend.
koizumi: whenever i think of him. i really think of myself. Acts very close to the way i do. He also kinda reminds me of kona-chan from lucky star in a very small way. lol

Yuki and Ryoko are my favorites! :D
I don't really know how to explain why, but they just are. xD
In descending order: Haruhi, Yuki, Tsuruya, and Itsuki.
Haruhi's not just my favorite character in her own series--she's probably my favorite character, period, despite (what feels to me like) the author forcing her to take (what feels to me like) an unreasonable amount of interest in Kyon. I can't think of any other character who's more optimistic, indomitable, hard-working, ambitious, well-intentioned, charitable, and a bevy of other positive personality traits rolled into one. ^^
And Kyon's miserable existence and defeatist outlook only highlight these aspects of Haruhi. He says: live a life of mediocrity, assume you have nothing worth contributing to the world. Fail at baseball, fail at computer games, fail at movie-making, don't put forth any effort, don't give things your best shot, don't try singing, don't attempt to find missing people. If you actually are special, stop it. Haruhi says: become somebody, find your own path. Even if you're playing, play as if your life depends on it. Take everything seriously, and if your ideas don't work out, keep trying.
...Of course, all my love is subject to change depending on where the series eventually goes, but that's my current impression of her. (Suffice it to say that if she ends up settling for an average life, I just might disown her. :( )
Yuki's another Kyon-opposite and that's why I like her. In any situation that required action, Kyon would whine for whole paragraphs on end in his mind before doing anything, and continue whining even while he did whatever it was. But Yuki? She'd take care of business and never say a word. Good for her.
Itsuki never has much character growth--even less than Yuki--but he's the only brigade member capable of considering and discussing possibilities. Haruhi is scarcely able to imagine failure, Kyon is scarcely able to imagine victory, Yuki doesn't have to consider possibilities because she can manipulate reality as she wishes, and Mikuru--well, Mikuru might be thinking of these things for all we know, but she never openly demonstrates it. Itsuki plays up a host of what-ifs and drives nearly all of the thoughtfulness in Haruhi (the series, not Haruhi herself). I suppose I might say that he's less important as a person than as a plot device... Still, even as a person, he does annoy Kyon almost as regularly as Haruhi. And I think of that as an enormous plus since, if you haven't figured it out by now, I can't stand that guy. >_>
After all of that, I ironically don't have any explanation for why I like Tsuruya. I just do. <_< Maybe it's her inability to hide her feelings--she can't stop herself from laughing at Mikuru's outfits and acting, and she's proud that her class could rip people off with mediocre food that sold just because of their outfits. :D I do love up-front characters.
As for the characters I haven't mentioned... I don't see much appeal to Mikuru or Kyon's sister. Ryoko and Shamisen could have been awesome if they were around more, but they weren't. Emiri has untapped potential too. I liked Taniguchi and the ENOZ girls well enough, but they're nowhere near top for me, and I can't figure out what's even supposed to appeal about Kunikida. I feel like Taniguchi already covers his role and then some.

*snip*
What I love about Nagato fanboys(girls?) is how they are able to ignore any and all of the HaruhixKyon moments in the series (as well as painting Haruhi as the villain), but what I really love about Haruhi fanboys/girls is how they are able to ignore all the negative aspects of her character.
Like, say, the sadism, selfishness, utter lack of restraint or sense, and molestation.
Sure, she improves a bit in later novels, but the show barely touches upon that.
(By the way, Haruhi is still one of my favorite characters.)
Also, you're probably the first person I've ever seen who actually hates Kyon. I'm surprised, most people consider him a fantastic male lead and narrator.
By the way, Kunikida is supposed to be Taniguchi's foil, as well as a friend from Kyon's (mysterious?) past.

Man, Kaisos, that is a astoinishingly accurate description.
The only HaruhixKyon moment that was obvious to me was the kiss scene.
The whole point of Haruhi that I saw was to be the cause of the problems all the rest of the cast had to solve (without which, there would be no story).
Guess which character I voted for?

*mutters to self about Yuki fanboys*
Like I said, Haruhi does improve. Quite a bit, actually. In addition, Kyon's increasing refusal to realize Haruhi's feelings for him seem to be more and more a case of self-denial than general denseness.
Then there's Vol. 4 and his
Reaction when he finds out that Haruhi is still alive.
Oh, and the fact that he gave up moe Yuki for Haruhi and everything that comes with her.
And then there's the whole "arguing like a married couple" thing, and the fact that the whole school thinks that they're dating, and that, as Koizumi constantly states, if Kyon ever told Haruhi that he loved her, all their troubles would come to an end. (Or at least lessen a lot.)
Yeah, Official Couple (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/OfficialCouple) right there.
My point was that Haruhi has a lot of negatives to her personality, but then so does Kyon.
He's rude to everyone (even Mikuru at times), has selective hearing, is lazy and unmotivated, and is in general unpleasant and negative.
And look at all the praise most people heap on him.
I can't find much negative to point out about Yuki, sadly... this is because, aside from her instability, she has no negative traits. Dammit.
lol... shamisen gets more love than Kimidori, Kunikida and taniguchi combined
but... where's kyonko!?

Before reading this post, I didn't really think that there were people out there who thought that giving up on the world being interesting and nearly condemning it showed tenacity ("indomitable"?), or that willingness to destroy the world and everything in it because you lost a baseball game was a positive trait ("well-intentioned"?!), or that sexual abuse was a trifling matter, or that ordering a classmate to do physical labor for you, buy you food, set up websites, and who knows what else while you sit and watch reflected a good work ethic ("hard-working"?!?), or that blackmail and thievery reflected well on a character ("charitable"?!?!). Creating a movie (one that openly panders to the lowest common denominator (sex sells), that thoroughly rips off from other sources, and just plain sucks) admittedly shows ambition, but when the goal is so undesirable, that isn't such a good thing.

Kyon is a little too smart, and in a way is denying his feelings because to him it would too convinent. It may be the fact that Haruhi DOES control the existence of the world, that as Koizumi has said it telling her he loves her would solve alot of problems, but to him, it wouldn't be because he loves her, which he does, but so that he can "save" the world. Volume 10 will show us a different dimension and what Kyon will exactly do when beckoned by Sasaki. Kyon's just lying to himself though, but of course that's part of growing up.

Self-denial. The author himself has said it. That's half the point of his series.
You hit the nail right on the head there. That's exactly how Kyon perceives his life.
Now it all depends on what Sasaki will do...

Putting it simply, he's a jerk. The narrator thing (as well as his "heart of gold") balances that out, much in the same way that Haruhi's good traits(being genuinely helpful, actually caring about the other Brigade members, being humorous) balance out the bad ones(... trying to end the world on at least three occasions). However, I will say that while I hate Kyon as a person, I like him as a character, much in the same way as quite a few DN fans view Light.

I only count one instance of Haruhi actively trying to end the universe.
Also, I've met DN fans who worship Light and his ideals, and admit that they'd do the same if they were put in his position. They're scary.
And, despite Kyon being a jerk, it's because we see his thought process that we can see he actively cares for people more than he lets on.

I didn't deny that there were people who actively worship the guy. In fact, the second "half" of the story seems to have been made solely in reference to that.

Which is why I said that the fact that he's the narrator balances out his actions. It's because we see his thought process that he can be liked. However, if he were a real person, he'd just come off as a jerk, as he never actually vocalizes his opinions on people.

The time travelers can't go back farther than that, assuming it's because of a "time quake" caused by her.
The Data Entity noticed a massive data flare that originated from Haruhi and eventually covered the entire universe.
While the representatives of neither group seem to think that either was caused by Haruhi destroying and rebuilding the world, Adult Mikuru notes that Yuki managed to create a "time quake" of her own after doing just that in Disappearance.

I had the same argument with Roger Rambo in the Novel topic, and now I'm arguing the opposite side.
Sigh...
The whole idea that Haruhi created the universe in its current form is just Last Thursdayism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Last_Thursdayism), as Koizumi helpfully points out in Vol. 1.
Just because it's possible doesn't mean it's correct. As both the aliens and the time travelers have memory of times previous to three years ago, the simplest explanation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occam%27s_razor) would be that they are correct in assuming that the world was not created three years ago.

She's my favorite character, she's just so cute and gentle and shy and passive it's ridiculous. X3

Itsuki Koizumi~

I guess I find him pretty mysterious... and I like his hand gestures. XP
Those are my favorites, I think that I'll also like Kyouko once I find out more about her. Emiri is another character I like along with Tsuraya, but I didn't vote for them because I wanted to break it down to my top 3 favorites.

We could try transferring Haruhi's powers to Tsuruya for a day or so and see how it turns out. Maybe we could get Mikuru in skimpier outfits if that happens.
Tsuruya is really cute anyway with that FANG of hers and her chronic laughing. It is said that laughter can spread innocently like an quick reaction airborne reagent, and sometimes just by thinking of her character makes me feel slightly happier (I have been hunting for her character gachapon keychain). As far as I can see the only 2 people who don't react well to her laughter is Kyon and Yuki.
Tsuruya-san is one of the most cutest anime characters ever..plus I am a big fan on fanged characters.
I apologize, I could not restrict myself in partaking in this conversation. She was also a favourite characters of mine too because she has a really cute laugh/voice, a fang, and also a really hyperactive personality that and would be an amazing dominating reflection in the bedroom. ...My nose feels funny thinking about it.

She doesn't have much of character development, she is just like any other buriko (she may be even a total klutz) in anime.
Haruhi has got real character, plus her god-like abilities and looks put her at the top of the list. Besides she is cute and has got tits.
Yuki is incredibly cute because she is so quiet and what my colleague put it as, "socially retarded". Her way of answering questions is one of the greater moe generation in that anime.
Tsuruya is insane and not being able to stop laughing makes her extremely cute. And that FANG! YES THAT FANG!!

Yuki very much fits the model of high-functioning autism. (Trust me on this--my brother has autism.) She has great depth of knowledge and competence, and excruciating attention to detail in things that interest her, but a complete lack of comprehension of social interaction, and an inability to imagine other people's perspectives.

Yuki very much fits the model of high-functioning autism. (Trust me on this--my brother has autism.) She has great depth of knowledge and competence, and excruciating attention to detail in things that interest her, but a complete lack of comprehension of social interaction, and an inability to imagine other people's perspectives.
She fits into the "weak but sweet looking" girl category. That is what probably made her so moe. Besides after what all the doujinshi have drawn her as (in a bunny costume, lifting kyonko's skirt, sitting loliciously down hugging a guitar), I think her popularity soared like mad.
The main point is still that she is cute in whatever she wears because of that blank look on her face. Even Taniguchi rates her as an A-, so we can't deny that she is uncute or ugly.

Haruhi, forever Haruhi.
Haruhi. Yes, Haruhi. Yuki too. If there was a Sasaki however, I would have plumped for her rather than Yuki.

I voted for Ryoko and Tsuruya.
Ryoko was my most favorite out of here because she was a rebel, one who would go against her superiors and go and kill Kyon anyway. Although Yuki deleted her, Ryoko made it clear to Kyon that his life wasn't going to be easy, with others like Ryoko around. And even when she went all killing mode, she kept her happy go lucky additude on Kyon, and even when she was dying/deleted with Yuki. I loved how she never changed her tone.
Tsuruya was also one of my favorites because of her tooth. and Nyoro~. But too, her personallity. She just took everything and made it fun. Everytime she would appear on screen, I'd start laughing.

Tsuruya is arguably my fav character. Cute, funny, frank and extremely reliable. There is nothing about her that is negative. The way she laugh at things just makes me happy somehow.
Mikuru is extremely moe. She is painfully shy and unfortunately inept yet she had the sense of responsiblity to continue her mission even though Haruhi torments her so.
Yuki is totally cool imo. Unfazed by anything and replying in minimal words. My gripe with her is that she does too much. Most of the problems face by the group are resolved by her.
Haruhi has godlike ability and looks. The only part where i don't like about her is when she is "tormenting" Mikuru. But on the other hand, i think she may be trying to build Mikuru confidence. We all know how adult Mikuru is. That is perhaps the result of Haruhi. I also don't think she is actively trying to end the world. She just don't know she had the ability. I think most of us have those " This world will be better if.." moments.
Kyon is just damn good in the commentary. I just wish he will admit to liking Haruhi already.

I rather had Haruhi confess to Mikuru, and
Kyon to Sasaki.

*snicker* Just... read the books. Adult Mikuru isn't the greatest of people. Probably, as you said, thanks to Haruhi.

I really do too... dammit Kyon.

Kyon to Sasaki.
Because Haruhi's totally a complete lesbian, and Kyon has totally shown a lot of interest for "her", yeah.
Suzumiya Haruhi - surely ! Like her. Then Nagato Yuki and Asahina Mikuru.
Because Haruhi's totally a complete lesbian
Hmm ?

Only Haruhi is fit for Kyon!

Does "buy" really have the same uses in Japanese as it does in English?
Having Kyon choose that girl, basically a far less dangerous version of Haruhi, would be a bold move on Tanigawa's part. Sure, we all know that it's the sort of thing that will never happen, but we can dream...

Wait, what?
That's Yuuichi Aizawa from Kanon. No relation to Kyon other than looking identical.

Shima said that he would like to see Kyon confess to the girl that you and I argue about. KHS used the Kanon clip and tried to use what Makoto said to emphasize her support for only Kyon/Haruhi. I questioned her usage of Makoto's line, and then once again asserted my support for the girl you and I argue about.
And haven't we decided that Kyon and Yuuichi are cousins? Although I'm partial to the theory that Everything in Haruhi is actually part of Ayu's dream.

That was mostly a joke.
Also, it's not like he's going to confess to Sasaki because, you know, he's not attracted to her.
That was mostly a joke.
I know. And now it is a running joke.

Suuuuuure he's not. Just like he's not attracted to Haruhi.

Kyon is pretty oblivious about both of them.
But he seems to hold (if nothing else) more loyalty towards Haruhi.

HER!? You mean HIS...
Anime: Kyon and Haruhi
Novels: Kyon and Yuki
I voted for all three of them.

Hn, I thought your writing had a feminine feel to it. Sorry about that.
