Just watched the preview and intro and it looks awesome. It has a lot of fanservice and the animation/style is really cool. Negi's magic looks awesome!

Hmm, shouldn't there be a thread so we can talk about the OAV?

Yea, looked at that preview too and the animation looks great. Fanservice out the wazoo too... :p
I loved the way they animated Negi doing a spell and drawing into the air.
that does look good..... now lets hope some fansub group is chomping at the bit to Negify us...
That is the preview DVD packaged with volume 15 of the manga release in japan, isn't it?

Okay I just saw the preview OVA and I gotta say I loved it. It had a nice opening song and much more interesting animation used in the opening then what Xebec did for it's anime.
The direction used in the anime looks pretty good too which is what expected by Akiyuki Shinbo.
... Nice fanservice shots too.
And for KonokaXSetsuna fans you'll love your gonna see.
Looks like this anime has capture the "essence" that makes Negima so great something that the other Negima anime couldn't do.

I've also just seen the preview, and any doubts I had about this new animation style are right out the window. Sure I can complain about the hair colors, but it's such a trivial matter now that I've seen that the other aspects are just spot-on. I mean, Natsumi with green hair is a little awkward, but they're also going to implement her simple round-eyed look that's just so darn adorable!

EDIT: Whoa...found something odd while going through the frames...When Natsumi first appears at the edge of the screen, her hair is Chizuru's color (which is actually more of her natural color).

And I'd like to say that though this OVA is based on something that happened in the manga, the new series will be mostly original material.

Heh I noticed that too maybe they changed their minds but didn't notice that her original color at that frame scene.
They could end up changing the hair color to some of the characters back in it's original form in the manga when the TV series starts but it's not that big of a deal as long the series is good.
I think i'll just post what i said in the other forum~
The animation is perfect for Negima. I could pretty much tell it would be from seeing the posters/scans in the past, but it actually means a lot more when being able to see them in action. Each character looks just how they should look in a anime, right down to the colors used.
It seems they'll sticking to the summer beach arc every step of the way.. even looks like we'll be getting more that'll add upto it being a OVA.
With the remake airing later this year, this really is a good start to Negima of the future, but still - the original series shall always have a special place within me. ^^
It seems too much fanservice to me, but it might just be because it's the preview and they want to get as much as possible in there to attract people.
I do like the animation, though it's hard to recognise some of the less used characters. The different music kept reminding me of various other soundtracks though for some reason.

Its Negima, so that amount of fanservice shall be used in the OVA.

There's no such thing as a less used character in Negima, each of them are special to the show, and we'll see that in the OVA.

What I meant is the fanservice/anything else ratio in the preview VS the OVA itself. It seems like at least 60% of the preview is fanservice so I assume in the OVA they'll take some time for story too.
There's no such thing as a less used character in Negima, each of them are special to the show, and we'll see that in the OVA.
Even in the manga you don't seem to see Satsuki and Zazie anywhere near as much as you see Asuna, Nodoka or Evangeline.

Of course, they're the main characters out of the whole cast, but still - saying we shouldn't see the others just as much is damn right wrong.
Each character means something to the story, and i for one want to see each of them around the same amount.

No-one said we should not see the others as much. O.o Just that it is hard to recognise some of the characters that we do not see as much, due to changes and new animation.
Each character does mean something to the story, but it is up to whoever is writing the script to decide how much we see who.
yeah, I suspect that six minute preview contained every single frame of fanservice the much longer full OVA has. I doubt it is nearly that pervasive in the full show.
I will say they seem to have amped up the curves on many of the young ladies in the PPD style.

I'll agree with that, though its no shock they've been added to make the style work more for the beach story.

wierd... I would have marketed the OVAs *prior* to the start of the new series as a hype factor. Doesn't sound like their production channels are all synchronized.

No, that's the website for the Negima!? Haru OVA. At the bottom, it says October 25 is the release date for the OVA's Special Edition DVD. It will have two discs: the first disc will have the OVA while the second disc contains bonuses such as a Making Of segment, a booklet, and other extras.

Got mixed up, i thought it was saying thats when the OVA is airing.
Airing tomorrow, so i'll have to preorder the DVD this week. ^__^

The release date for the second OVA, Negima! OVA Summer Special has been set for November 22. This is a surprisingly quick release considering it's only a month after the release of the Spring OVA (October 25), and the fact that the Summer OVA screening hasn't taken place yet.
As with the Spring OVA, there will be two discs, one for the feature presentation and the other for a behind the scene extras, including voice dubbing shooting and coverage of the Summer OVA event, to be held on Sept. 17 (incidentally, I received the invitation to it by mail today).
Here is the synopsis for the Summer OVA. Beware! Spoiler warning! (Spring OVA synopsis here ( http://forums.animesuki.com/showpost.php?p=605946&postcount=165))
Lovers are tied by a red string...Nodoka, a girl in love, is secretly in love with Negi-sensei. One day at the library, she accidentally discovers a magic spell that brings you together with your destined person. With the help of her friend Yue, Nodoka tries out the spell, hoping it bring Negi-sensei. Then, a long strand of red string extends from her finger and disappears into the skies. After a while, attached on the other end of the string was Negi-sensei, who suddenly comes flying down! Startled at first, Nodoka becomes happy. However, the spell of the magic string was actually a practical joke that brought people together! A dejected Nodoka tries to cut the string, but for some reason cannot do so. Apparently, the string will not disappear until after some time has elapsed. Until then, she is stuck with Negi-sensei...Nodoka is quietly enjoying her moment, while Negi-sensei is perplexed. That is when Ayaka arrives, telling everyone from the class to visit the newly completed Yukihiro Spa Resort. The start of a heart-throbbing, happening-filled adventure.
All right. The second OAV is going to be Nodoka-focused. I definitely need to watch that when it comes out.
(hopes for, if the OAV does acknowledge Negi's Pactio with Nodoka, a nude "adeat" sequence for Nodoka a la Asuna in the Spring OAV)
The second OAV is going to be Nodoka-focused. I definitely need to watch that when it comes out.
If anything, it needs to show her date with Negi at the festival.. i so adore how it ends! >_<;
Well... it *sounds* like a completely original OVA, so I wouldn't count on the festival appearance. I just love Engrish ... "The start of a heart-throbbing, happening-filled adventure." <blargh>
Looks like Negi-overload with the series and the OVAs all popping at the same time.

True, though thats not a bad think at all - its just a shame most of its got nothing to do with the manga.

ok after watching the promo the first thing that popped into my mind was...
what is this crap.
I'm going to have to be harsh now because i couldnt tell if negima was supposed to be an ecchi school girl show or a bikini porno. you would have thought they figured out in the first seasons twenty or so episodes that the story sucked.
and so what do they do about it? hey lets stick everyone on a deserted island and have them drop in by sky diving. beacuse this was never done before. there isnt a whole love hina OVA where this already happened.
I wanted a story about the girls and why they are unique. when i say unique i dont mean by the different color panties they wear. the negi sneezing bit has been done twice. three times now. its not funny anymore.
at least the second half of the promo does look to be promising. hopefully they dont stick to all that fanservice because that is a turn off. fanservice should be done with taste. not a buffet where its stuffed down your throat.
ok i feel better now.
I never get past second episode of anime, but I'm reading manga as they come out. From the promo it looks like they will animate end of seventh book, recognized a lot of scenes, and some original material, at least I don't remember that there were more than just beach scene.
Well, looking forward to this one, mainly because the director is Akiyuki Shinbo, so it can't be bad, ne?
The fact that the first OAV is basically going to be a "fanservice" fest is one reason why I'm planning to skip that one and instead wait for the Summer OAV (Nodogi = cutest anime couple IMO) and the TV series.

hmm looks like negi gets an upgrade in his magic :heh: gogo you :p
The 1st OVA appears to be primarily a retelling of the beach trip in the manga (some modifications and expanded whatnot). Since Evangeline supposedly can't leave the perimeter without special dispensation, it'll be interesting to see if they cover that plothole or ignore it.
As far as the fanser... okay... camera angle on butts .... it is pretty extensive and repetitive ... but then I've noticed the manga volume incidents are getting more blatantly risque though the total number of "fan bits" have dropped.

This is bullshit. WHY!? you may ask:
1. NEGI DOESN'T write in the air to cast spells. he never ONCE did that in the manga!
2. I hate what they did To Nodoka. she's may favorite character and she didn't need a "small" design change to her. For God's sakes they shortened her face covering hair.
3. CAN'T ANYONE GET EVANGILINE'S LOOK WRITE! neither the origanl nor the OVA seem to get her to look like the manga version!
4. Asuna has 2 different colored eyes! They didn't put that in the OVA! and does anyone else notice that she looks more like Usagi from Saior Moon than Asuna from the Manga! GOD!
5. Sakurako's hair is a fucked up blonde!? IT'S ORANGE DUMBASSES!!!
6. Yotuba lost weight!? she is a full figured character people!
7. Ako, Makie, and Chizune all character degines are off. NEED TO BE FIXED!!!!!
Im not going to watch this shit. The "effects" maybe better that the origanl anime series but this OVA squese further from the manga that the origanl did. this does the manga a huge diservice.
However. since the 2nd OVA seems to focus on Nodoka's love for Negi i might watch it just for that. but if it has a bad end for her love for him i will never watch any of the OVA ever again.
Well... at least Rin-sama is specific about his complaints. I'd seen the character (re)designs a while back and given that the SHAFT team was involved... their artstyle is just different --- I gave it a pass since you could still tell who was who. Kind of like looking at a character done by different artists in their own styles.
I admit I have no clue why anyone thought messing with Asuna's eyes was okay.
I'm ambivalent about the finger writing because frankly, manga is a collection of still frames... in fact, parts of volume 11 during the fight sequences.. its rather tough to figure out what is going on at times (Ken A. lacks some finesse in combat storyboarding).
The real key will be the story ... we know it isn't going to follow the manga line for line though it may incorporate concepts or major events -- but will it capture the spirit of the characters and the flavor of the adventures? Dunno til we see it.
Whats the point of complaining about changes in a OVA when the purpose of it is to change what people didn't like in the previous series?
Wow.. if you're not liking it now, i can't see you liking the new TV series at all.

your supposed to make changes to improve the show :joke:
honestly, were people complaining about not enough panty shots before?
what if they changed asuna's eye color every other screen event, lol that would be funny. its very important for asuna to have different color eyes, it would be like if she did not have the bells in her hair. its just not right.

The amount of fanservice was a complaint among some of my friends.
It's a shame that no one so far can get Asuna right.
they all look matured (physically i mean). is this like a continuation of the series or a stand alone version?

The OVA is a re-telling of the beach arc from the manga, but with a few new extras parts - though it shall be a stand alone story, meaning its not got anything to do with the brand new series that starts later this year.
As far as their physicality, I'm watching Ken do the same thing to his girls... compare some of the girls from volume 1 with volume 11.... they must serve really uber-tofu in Japan. Hair color changes are annoying but not out of the question since a bottle of hair color is available technology.... but Asuna's eyes are just annoying. Its like doing Chach without her ear fins.

I just came back from today's Negima! Mahora Academy Class 3-A Second Term event, which featured the screening of the upcoming Negima! OVA Summer.
As mentioned in my post above (http://forums.animesuki.com/showpost.php?p=650816&postcount=22), the story centers on Nodoka and Negi, where the two are tied together by the red string of fate, and cannot be separated from each other due to Yue's magic.
Ayaka invites the entire class to try out the brand new Yukihiro Spa Resort before the grand opening. While the girls are having fun bathing, Haruna realizes this is the opportunity of a lifetime for Nodoka, and persists on sticking the two together.
Meanwhile, Asuna wants Negi to be washed and clean since he's at a bath, but the washing robot created by Hakase sets Asuna as the target, and she's the victim of its harrassment throughout the episode.
The only way for Nodoka and Negi to break free is for Yue to channel her true feelings in a spell, which she is successful at, albeit reluctantly.
Basically, the Summer OVA is more of a fanservice episode in terms of plotline. The fanservice is pretty rampant, with loads of eyecatches (ala Tsuyokiss). This is a Nodoka episode, complete with an ending song by Noto Mamiko, although it can be said at the expense of Yue.
Asuna fans are probably going to be appalled, as she is being virtually tentacle raped for most of the scenes.
As with the Spring OVA, the Summer OVA is more like an introduction of the new Negima look by Gansis/Shaft. I personally have no problems with the character designs, probably because I have to compare it to the first anime season, although the upcoming Negima!? anime series will likely take different routes, despite being created by the same production team.
The anime series will launch prior to the release dates of both OVAs (Oct. 25 and Nov.22 respectively), so most people will see it in a different perspective from me, so I'm eagerly waiting to see how the TV series will go along.
The event was hosted by Satou Rina (Negi), and Kanda Akemi (Asuna), Nonaka Ai (Konoka), Kobayashi Yuu (Setsuna), and Shiraishi Ryouko (Kaede) made an appearance.

I will have to agree with Rin-sama here. the OVA ruins the manga yet again. the 2nd movie i might watch just to see what they do with Nodoka's love for Negi.
Ah well... we're halfway through September.... only a month-ish to go...
and then all hell breaks loose with Nanoha, Kanon, Negima, and a truckload of kitchen sinks.

I bought the Negima!? Spring OVA today.
Since I've already seen it and posted it here before, I'll just briefly mention my second impressions.
After seeing the SHAFT Negima!? TV series from October, the character designs don't look out of place anymore. Since this is an OVA which is set outdoors, the vivid colors are something yet seen in the TV anime, and the fanservice is noticeable (although not to the degree of the Summer OVA) .
I failed to notice it during the screening event, but one of the beachballs Asuna is blowing up is Mesousa from Pani Poni Dash!
Other than the fact that this is Negima!? by SHAFT, there aren't many similarities between the OVA and the TV series, therefore I think it would have been better for both OVAs to be released at an earlier date (the timing for the Spring OVA is definitely deliberate).
There isn't much of a story in this OVA (and for the Summer OVA for that matter), and I'll admit I purchased this for the other disk containing shots of the screening event with the Negima seiyuus.
At least the Ku Fei armor card was nice.

Spring OVA Screencaps and Summary (http://randomc.animeblogger.net/2006/10/25/mahou-sensei-negima-spring-ova/)
I didn't think I would be impressed by SHAFT/GANSIS/Shinbou Akiyuki again like I was with the first episode of Negima!?, but boy I was wrong because this was great. I hadn't expected much of a plot, and indeed there really wasn't one (Asuna angry at Negi, Eva trying to find a chupacabra, other girls doing various things), but there's tons of humor to make up for it. I was laughing or smiling through pretty much the entire thing.
Loved the sky-diving scene. SHAFT sure know how to animate hair.
The sound Chachamaru makes when she's sky-diving is the sound of a Simoun engine.
Evangeline's kick on Chachamaru is Nono's onee-sama kick from Die Buster.
And I think Sasake did a Eureka 7 homage riding the piece of Hakase's broken mecha.

Is it out yet?
Just watched the OVA. I'd say upto now that was the best Negima to anime adaptation i've seen so far, in terms of pretty much everything. In terms of the SHAFT style, its helps that i've already seen four episode of the new series - at least that way i haven't got to spend a few minutes getting used to the style of it all. It was also nice to hear more of Haneoka Kei's music thats already doing wonders for the new series.
Probably the main factor of the OVA had to be the fanservice. Its been mentioned before how the new series doesn't involve it thanks to it being aimed at the younger audience (meaning more battles), though i believe SHAFT did a wonderful job with it. It had to be considering its a summer OAV. :3
Wow, some harsh comments in here..
I really enjoyed the Haru OVA...not for the unsurprising fanservice, but for the surprising amount of character personality that they were able to cram into such a short time. There are tons of humorous moments between all the members of the class. The animation and character designs are really pleasant. I'm sure I'll like it even more if/when a subbed version comes about, though I was able to follow most of it with my meager Japanese.
The sky diving scene wins. I could watch it over and over again. Damn, I love these characters! :D

^ its already subbed just so you know ^_^
lol even in the ova the chupacabra is making its debute :p
i really loved the story of this...its like a series of mini plots featuring the minor charaters with the background plot to get asuna and negi to become friends again...
the fanservice is insane...lucky negi getting crushed by breasts :heh: tbh i think the animation style has grown on me so much that i dont really mind it anymore...or rather im beginning to lose the ability to recall the animation style of the original series...maybe a few rewatches might sort this out :p
highlight of the ova for me is setsuna's perverted thoughts :heh: so cute!

Excellent animation as expected from Shaft. I guess the OVAs is where they packed all the fanservice that can't be in the anime because of the time slot. What a fun fluffy show though.

Really thought this was excellent, and disagree heartily with the "no plot" attacks. Simplicity is fine, if the point gets made - and there was a lot in 23 minutes, here. I thought the OVA did a beautiful job of illuminating the complex relationship between Negi and Asuna - which is in many ways the heart of the manga - without overplaying it, and crammed in a lot of humor and fanservice to boot. All done with the now evident SHAFT style and panache - though they're interpreting rather than copying the manga, clearly they "get" the material. What's not to like here?

An interesting OVA this is.
The sky diving scene was very cool and animation quality was great. The fanservice didn't really bother me but some of the character's personalities did because they seem to be...hyped? For example, I know Secchan is fond of and friendly with Konoka, but she's like a total perv in this OVA. Is she like this in the manga as well because I never saw her act that way in the original anime. One interesting thing I saw in the OVA was the little breaks in the OVA where it showed each girl about their personalities. I would of never though Konoka was into the Occult Stuff and some of the girl's likes and dislikes were funny. I never read the manga so it was interesting for me to see each with different physical features. I like how the twins had different eye colors because it makes them more unique and easy for me to tell them apart.
Early in the manga, Setsuna is very reserved but as Konoka encourages her to be more outgoing... it becomes clear that Setsuna is very deeply attached to Konoka by the way she blushes and freaks out when Konoka is on display.
There's one bit where Konoka takes an aging spell and turns 17ish.... Setsuna nearly loses her jaw doing a jawdrop.
I'm not going to completely dropkick the first anime because it did a few things rather well but it missed the boat on many many facets of the characters. Setsuna being one of them. We shall see whether the "spirit" of the characters is maintained in the "!?" series.
Wandering_Youth
2006-11-02, 04:53
Well since we're talking about Setsuna can anyone give me example of her dislikes? It said in the OVA she dislike bent things but that was rather vague. As funny as that already sounds I can't really grasp that because alot of things in the world are bent.
Hmmm, I don't remember anything said about "bent" things in the manga ... wonder if that is a translation oddity. Setsuna understands her position and is very formal... so *casualness* makes her very uncomfortable. This evolves as the series progresses and her comrades discover things about her. Though Konoka is very dear to her, she also gets flustered a lot when Konoka treats her as an equal or "play buddie".

Hello curvacious babes!SHAFT did a great job on this one!It was fun seeing the girls form the class just having a good time.
I never thought Setsuna liked Konoka so much, the way she keeps checking her out!
Konoka : Secchan, why is your face all red?
Setsuna : Um,because it's hot..*staring at Konoka's body* It's hot...it's hot...
And of course the skydiving scene was awesome.
Note : When Zazie is juggling Kamo-kun,the balls are red from far away then become yellow on the close up,then red again then yellow again.Weird.
Okay.. I finally sat down and watched the whole OVA special.
Basically a pared down version of the summer break beach trip in the manga.
It kind of played like a slideshow of the trip, short bits split by still shots of the girls and their attributes. Setsuna probably came off the worst as a smitten fangirl of Konoka, but I guess the viewing audience is already aware of their story. The animation of Negi in boob smothering didn't play as well animated as in the manga but no big deal.
They did cover the "plothole" of Eva with a quick cut of the dean pumping out excuse memos which will make absolutely no sense to anyone seeing Negima for the first time :)
Good lord, I've not seen so many risque shots of teenage behinds and upshots since... o ever. I guess they're getting it all out of their system before diving under the "dinnertime showtime" blanket.
Only complaint I've surfaced is that the episode just seemed kind of sugar shallow but what the hell, most of the time is spent hitting the pause/single frame button anyway :)

I agree, it was quite fun watching the OVA, even more so than Negima?!( maybe due to the fanservice xD). Which is also why i didn't notice Asuna's eyes were the same colour.
The show started out perfectly with Negi sneezed to tear of Asuna clothing. I never expected Negi to have such a power.

This OVA is really enjoyable, I was really surprise to see Negi blows up all her clothes, I wasnt really expecting, sorta gave me a heartattack:heh:, but is good!. On another hand, Setsuna is so ecchi..always looking at Konoka's body parts:D, but cant help it, I would of looked at it always haha, so revealing x_x.
1 Thing I enjoy about Negima and this OVA is the feature of Asuna's bells. It makes her really attractive and cute:p and the way she uses her magic powers is pretty cool too. Now if they have those stuff in Negima!?, that be nice~~ though the show targets at teenagers sadly:(

The core of the OVA istory is the relationship between Negi and Asuna. Asuna does love Negi. but what type of love? I mean, the girls already figured out that all they have to do is to wait 5 years and they'll have a hot boyfriend then. Will Asuna figure that out?

Well since we're talking about Setsuna can anyone give me example of her dislikes? It said in the OVA she dislike bent things but that was rather vague. As funny as that already sounds I can't really grasp that because alot of things in the world are bent.
I realize this is old business, but I just came across the post. I can't vouch for the translation either (see below), but it seems reasonable. Apparently, Setsuna dislikes perversion and chatterboxes.

When it comes to Negi and Asuna, that "love" is right now at a "brother/sister" stage, with "older sister" Asuna wanting to protect "younger brother" Negi.
