This is an OVA series which apparently has 6 episodes as according to ANN (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=6769). As I watched the trailer it struck me how similar the character design is to Akira (http://anidb.info/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=28). So I did a search on the person who is responsible for the character designing for this OVA, and guess what I find? Katsuhiro Otomo (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=232), who authored and directed the movie Akira, will be the character designer for this OVA. That got me excited! Synopsis is in the following as taken from animenfo (http://www.animenfo.com/animetitle,3837,vmqqug,freedom.html):
A.D. 1969 Apollo 11th lands on the moon
A.D. 2035 Space development project, FREEDOM, begins
A.D. 2041 A free port of the space station is built. The construction of the moon cities begins.
A.D. 2048 The first base is built.
A.D. 2101 A space port falls on the Earth causing disaster.
A.D. 2103 The declaration of foundation of Moon Republic, Eden
A.D. 2105 The declaration of blockade of Eden. The civilization on the Earth collapses.
The civilization on the Earth was destroyed by permanent abnormal climate.
In these days, cities of one million people had been built on the moon, and they became the only place where human-race survived. The people left on the moon declared the foundation of Republic Eden. Then, they have been expanding the cities that loved peace and freedom. However, a boy’s act would shake Eden’s freedom and peace later.
More than 160 years have passed since then.
In Eden, the children finish their compulsory education when they are 15 years old. Then, they become parts of the society as citizens. During their brief moratorium, they are given freedom. Like other boys, Takeru is going to take part in a race with his friends. It is a race of machines perucilar to the moon called “Vehicle”. What is different from other boys is Takeru made his vehicle by himself. By this act, Takeru touches the secret hidden in Eden.
In the year of 2267, Eden hides two freedoms.
The mystery behind the appearance of noodle cup in the trailer in few scenes is also explained as: "This anime first appeared as tie-up advertisement with Nisshin. Some scenes including the protagonist was eating Cup Noodle were used in its commercial film." So many good animes are sceheduled to air in October that I don't even know how I'll be able to keep up with them all, but this one I'll definitely keep an eye to. :)
I just watched the 6 minutes trailer for this OVA series and took some screen capture posted in the bottom. Here is a link (http://stream.dmap.jp/brand/fdp/prologue/p_360sec_500k_400.wmv) to the 500 K/bits stream and I must say, it looks awesome! For a lower/higher quality version compared to the above trailer can be found in ANN (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/article.php?id=9366).

Watched the first episode, first thoughts are it's apparent this is a real attempt to advance CG mimicking the traditional hand-drawn look. Does it work? Well, true, it's hard to tell Katsuhiro Otomo's characters are CG at times, but they do still carry that certain stiffness in many of the scenes. Expressions are also a bit unconvincing at times, but I have to say overall it's rather impressive for an OAV.
However the backgrounds are gorgeous, packed full of astonishing level of detail and sumptuous lighting. They really bring to life the world inside the Eden Dome; the grimey guts of the station, Takeru & Friend's workshop, the paraphenalia of an old pilot's lodgings etc... Yet the lunar landscape outside is portrayed as cold and bleak, beautiful and silent with it's starless sky.
Hopefully someone will sub this soon, but some initial comments about the plot based on the raw...
... so on the moon Takeru and friends race their vehicles against rivals in an attempt to bring some fulfillment to their seemingly empty lives in the Eden Dome; drummed into working for the Department of Social Welfare because they're at the lower end of the food chain. So things are not very peachy for Takeru, especially after a run in with the authorities for racing illegally. He also has a crush on his friend's sister (I really can't understand why though, she was so incredibly dull) which seems to be unrequited. Admittedly Takeru is quite a typical protagonist: stubborn, socially inept but determind to succeed despite luck not being on his side.
The design of the Vehicles, and their stylings, mods and suitably throaty engine sounds, reminds me of Last Exile's vanships. The spectacularly portrayed race which frames the episode is rather like the vanship races in Last Exile also. Takeru even gets a booster to use in the race and similarly fails to win despite taking the lead.
Soon Takeru is back doing soul-crushing maintainence work, during which he spots a crashed message pod in which he finds a photo of a group of children, on what appears to be Earth, bearing the intriguing message - 'We are safe. Is anybody out there?'. There it ends unfortunately. Obviously where this message came from and who the children are is the big mystery.
So interesting first ep. It's a bit early to tell how it's going to develop tbh, but so far so good (despite all those people eating Cup Noodles) :D
EDIT: I thought Yoshihiro Ike's music was particularly good here, sounding a lot like his Ergo Proxy soundtrack in places. But I didn't like Utada Hikaru's OP much, it's quite atypical of the generic pop she does.
I hope someone subs this too. This just looks amazing. I loved the OP and ED animation. So, is Nisshin Cup Noodles the Japanese version of Spam (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SPAM), extremely well known fast food product with a cultural icon status? At least, there is a reason (http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/worldbiz/archives/2002/04/17/132262) for their tie-in to this program other than the usual promotion stuff.
Wouldn't it be funny if parts of the history that they were told on Eden is a lie and there are people on Earth?
In the UK we have Pot Noodles (http://www.unilever.co.uk/ourbrands/foods/Pot_Noodle.asp), which are about as nutritious as concrete and considerably less tasty.
...
Wouldn't it be funny if parts of the history that they were told on Eden is a lie and there are people on Earth?
Dai Sato (Eureka 7, Ergo Proxy) is one of the writers, so I wouldn't be at all surprised.
Mmmm.... Pot Noodles! ;)
That picture at the end is interesting. I'd post it but I don't know how to take a screen capture in Media Player Classic. No .avi raws yet.
No date on the pic is a bummer but the sender may want the receiver to think that it was done recently. But sending a message in English saying "We are safe. Is anybody out there?" is alittle suspicious imo. The sender is assuming that whoever finds it understands English. Saying "safe" implies that there was a conflict of some sort imo. But there is a dish tower in the background. It seemed to me that the sender is assuming that there is a viable colony up there.
That girl and the kids in the pic are in the OP so they must be important.
Imagine the followup.. "We forgive you for dropping the space port on us. Not! DIE you b*******!" :heh:
It's a long wait for vol. 2 too (2/23/2007).
You can save images straight out of MPC: File>Save Image.

Yeah does make you wonder who is taking the photograph. They've obviously got access to space technology, so it a bit suspicious and certainly throws doubt on the story of Earth's civilisation being wiped out.
In the OP I like the way they map wireframes to the real world objects, suggesting that you can't take at face value what is supposed to be real...
Hey, it looks like that Freedom previsited (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=BCBA-2807) actually has some answers to some of our questions from the raws. I hope that parts of this gets subbed too.
I could be wrong but...
It looks to me like that was a present time photo shot up by a group of curious amateurs.
There was alot of stuff on the promo DVD so I hope that someone translates the important clip.
Has anyone heard if a group will sub this?

Yes, I have.
Yes, I have.
Is Yoroshiku doing it?
You can expect Yoroshiku and Animeforever joint at some point. It's with kittenbitten for translation checking and additions at the moment.
I try to find this post, but the serching dont report nothing...
So... i'm making this new one.
This news job of (Akira) Otomo are released on fansub...
And you... do you like it?
You can expect Yoroshiku and Animeforever joint at some point...
That good news! Thanks.
I see Kanjisub have released the prologue (from the 'Freedom previsited' dvd?).

...
Yep, in the prologue...
...it shows a group of survivors, children and other adults, launching the message rocket from the ruined space center from Earth to the moon. The space center is ruined and desolate, so I'm not sure if the photo was manipulated, or if it's just a different location...
There's some snippets about the last rocket from Earth to Eden, but it fails to tell us when the last one left.
Is the prologue from the 'Freedom previsited' dvd?
prologue are both on dvd previsited and dvd 1
so Animeforever want do it... a joint with?
Umm, it's a Yoroshiku project on joint with Animeforever, in the same way we did Kemonozume.
Everything is already underway, no real space to open up the joint as most work is done at Yoroshiku with translation checking and additions from Animeforever as I wanted kittenbitten to check over my work.
understood,
no problem we have all translated too ;)
Episode 1 of Freedom Project has been subbed by Shinsen-Subs. (please move thread)
Thanks Shinsen for doing this one and Flag. :)
Wasn't too sure about this OVA but from the looks of it, I tempted to get the DVDs though the single episode count per DVD (par for OVAs) is now the stumbling block. Will wait for more episodes to be out on DVD before relooking into buying them. For now though, it looks interesting.
Wow. This is a beauty. Spectacular can only describe the show. Overall; everything was presented really well; and if one could call it eye-candy; it'd probably be more accurate to call it gritty eye-candy.
The characters themselves being in CG took a little time getting use to, but it makes perfect sense, because thinking about it, and having seen the environment surrounding them, it'd be downright weird to see them in real 2D. As Sonhex said, it was a little stiff, but just only barely noticeable IMO. The expressions were different, but still believable and quite no-less colourful.
Story-wise, this episode sets an interesting plot in motion; a return to Earth; though I felt that it could have done more to emphasise the so-called "desolation" of Earth. Still, I suppose this was primarily focused on the race, at least to give some of our characters development first. Which it did, quite satisfactorily. Of course, some might balk at the tried-and-tested character that is Takeru (In fact, Takeru really reminded me of Shu from NTHT), but frankly, I can't get enough of those typesets. Plus, I guess it’s balanced out in his colourful support cast; in the nervous and apprehensive Bismarck and the forthright and steady Kazuma.
But back to the plot about Earth, yes just from this I've got a feeling that this show has much much potential for greatness. Especially sticking in my mind was the last scene; which honestly, couldn’t have been a better idea. To see the Earth coming out of the Moon’s eclipse was so, so symbolically fitting, and graphically done to l33t accompanying music.
Graphics wise; like I said, gritty eye-candy. It is incredibly detailed, from tiny bolts (to the inscriptions on them!) to breath-taking panoramas of the dome. Lighting was okay; I really liked the shadows Takeru and Kazuma cast while out on the EDEN dome; furthermore, seeing the reflections of their face-shields was a nice touch.

On what was ostensibly the focus of this episode, the Race. It was pretty okay with the rest of the episode, nothing especially spectacular but incredibly entertaining. What really impressed me was the sound effects for this segment. I had my speakers on loud; blasting all the screeches and “engine-shrieks,” while my subwoofer was literally creating wind. (My mom, in the kitchen, wasn’t too happy XD) It was a delightfully planned cacophony, to say the least.
The OP is arguably the one of the most creative and original OPs I've seen in quite a while. It was fitting intro to the eye-candy that was to follow it. The way they muxed real-life video and CG imagery was seamless. And it was full of symbolisms too! The desolation of earth with the flourishing of the moon, most ranking, was the last scene, showing first a plain floating canister and then shifting to a scene showing a glass bottle on a shore. In the context of the episode, could it not be more obvious? Song was love. I fail to describe it, just listen to it. All in all, the OP was just so watch-able, more than that; it was an absolute joy to behold. Likewise for the ED. It wasn’t as spectacular; more low-key, but enjoyable too and very nice to follow along with.
'Nuff said, I'm definitely going to follow this one. It has much potential to be a great and memorable series.

Indeed, it is...
While stillshots of this anime might look ok or even good - ugly rag doll movement becames apparent as soon as something non-artifical(i.e. human face) tries to move. It's far better than TANK S.W.A.T. 01, but still wastly inferior to anything done in normal 2D art.

Not at all, I have to disagree. Did you see the way Old Alan jumped about? Hardly "ugly rag doll movement" to me. It may be stiff at parts, but not as bad as you make it out to be. Even if you're right, I'm quite happy to put up with it; because such kind of clunky animation really is a distinctive feature of the show isn't it? It's one part that makes the show what it is, unique.
The technique is clunky in places, it's not 100% perfected, but it does have its charm and like you say, makes it unique I think. The next episodes may see an improvement, but I can certainly live with it; the rest of the high production values more than makes up for it. Having said that there are some scenes that are indistinguishable from traditional 2d stuff which hints at the potential of this technique. That scene of Takeru eating noodles springs to mind.
One thing I was disapointed about (from the prologue)...
...was that Takeru's jacket was not an heirloom or had some other significance. I guess I was hoping for some personal connection between him and the Apollo Jona mission.

Pretty good first episode. I'm not very fond of Otomo's character designs but these were really special, and I think they worked pretty well and had a unique effect. Not only that, I thought the character expressions were very 'human'. Well, some movement was really 'rag-doll', but some other parts were masterfully done, for example the last scene. The race was also pretty good. Why do I have a feeling that Otomo likes race scenes in his anime? (Okay, it's not HIS anime but he has a big role in it)
I liked the premise, and the episode was pretty interesting. Somehow the plot reminded me of Pale Cocoon, even though the similarities are very few. I'm really looking forward to see how the plot will develop; I hope it doesn't end being sterotypical.

HAHA! i love cup noodles :D first pizza hut from code geass now this :p
man i knew i heard the OP song somewhere before >.< ahh right its was from the "ultra blue" album :) beautiful song imo ^_^
well the animation is most definatly unique...its kinda like 3D CG but at the same time cartoonish O.o really strange...
well the race just reminded me of star wars :D but this time the hero looses ~
the plot seems interesting enough...with earth being destroyed by humans (kinda like reality) and humans are forced to live on the moon...
That bracelet scene was sooo ominous, sort of like A Brave New World or 1999. I mean why is the teen population being monitored and the adults aren't? It doesn't even seem like it's all teens either.
The fact that they're assigned careers and have to be "good citizens for the future" or something like that points in the direction you speak of.
2-10-07 (4:44AM EST)---- FREEDOM2 Will Stream Free For 3 Days

Woah. Thats tomorrow! I suppose we can but try. (lol I need a Yahoo Japan ID to access the streaming page, I think).

I just checked. Yes, you do need a Yahoo Japan ID to access the page. Hence, it's mainly those in Japan who will get to watch the video stream. Oh well...
Yep, not like we really lose out. :D :heh:
It still sucks. We got to see Reideen and GR-Giant Robo but can't see Freedom.
It's not too long to wait. DVD is on the 23rd. Personally I have the ripped stream ;x
Just watched Episode 2. Confirms the conspiracy of control that has been hinted at in Episode 1. Other than that, some action thrown in towards the end after Takeru and Kazuma see the real Earth for themselves.
License announced in a news article about Geneon to distribute Bandai Visual DVDs in the U.S. Freedom OVA listed as one of the new titles this deal will apply.

The mystery is very intriguing. The questions are now:
Why the isolation for the flow of information in regards to earth?
How are these things such as photos and other junks are being sent from earth to the moon?
I'm intrigued!

Yes, it is definitely intriguing to find out more of the conspiracy of control that's in place.
I'm guessing it's all about control and the power that comes from it. They do not want the people on the moon to know that Earth has recovered.
That's an interesting thought. Power and control really is an irresistable incentive for anyone to do the outrageous of things. How did they prevent so many people to just take a peek from the outside on the moon to the earth, is another mystery. Surely one or two people could have taken a peek just as Takeru in the past century. By killing them perhaps?
I also think that there is another reason for why no one is allowed to know about the earth's condition. In the opening of the episodes, it is explained the atmosphere of the earth deteriorates just because the space station fell from the orbit after an accident. The war that follows wiped out the human kind in earth. I find this explanation hard to believe, especially after watching this episode. This is obviously the explanation given to the lunar colonists.
Could it be the war on earth was instigated by a few people who now live in these lunar colonies? If so, what instigated the sabotage?

I will. :) This raises the possibility that the earth has been active for sometime, and has enough technology to send a unmanned spaceship to the moon. Then why aren't anyone coming to take a look? The two pictures also seemed to indicate that the payloads were dumped at a pretty short interval.
The mystery is killing me. I skipped a beat as soon as the episode came to an end because it felt so abrupt. :) Can hardly wait for the next episode.
Well....
The satellite was landing outside the range that they are allowed to go on the moon and it seemed that only people are allowed outside if they are working. So, that means that it could have been by chance that the first satellite was discovered. It landed in a different crater.
The population does seem to be very accepting of a lot of things. Maybe those that are not conditioned appropriately are wearing the bracelets.
This would be an absolute riot if....
The picture was also a lie. :heh:
Tell us where you're at so we can come blow you away for that space station drop.
The space station was named "Freeport". Maybe the colony was trying to obtain independence and retaliated by the space station drop. Because they were scared of the inevitable retaliation, they clamped down on info and freedom of the residents of Eden trying to hide from the survivors on Earth.

I just watched episode 2 and even though the animation freaks me out a bit i like it and the concept. I honestly didnt think i would like it as much as i do looking forward to the release. Two important points i have noticed about the series.
1 If you live in a futuristic society where most of mankind has been destroyed and the name of your city is EDEN the people who run the place are lying to you. That has been proven in almost every sci series with the name eden in it.
2. Even in the future Cup O Noodles survives.:D
2. Even in the future Cup O Noodles survives.:D
Yep. Salt-ladden mass-produced cup of mystery food survives in all times. :heh:
^ Product Placement FTW! It's nice to see those jolly red words. XD
Watch the prologue. The prologue starts off by showing a small rocket being launched to space and ends with the rocket payload reaching Moon orbit and discharging the capsule it holds onto the Moon.
Also see near the end of the OP, about 2:25 onwards, for a glimpse of that capsule.
Everything seems to be well-coordinated, designed even, to prevent people from knowing the truth. Just with the right checks in place (like that computer system lockdown - WTH it shut down the entire place's network) and the right people in the right places, and it'll be pretty plausible. See how they managed to get the volunteering crew off of the dome. By those bracelets too, they practically control the population down to an individual. The way I see it, no one is allowed outside the domes during Earth-rise until Earth-set. Thus, no one (except those allowed to) will ever lay eyes on the Earth and therefore no one thinks to disbelieve the fact that it's red and destroyed.
I find it unlikely that an entire population can be bluffed into just believing a false story that a space station felt onto Earth followed by the occurrence of a world wide war severe enough to make Earth inhabitable. For something that preposterous, people would have to see it to believe it; and I'm sure EDEN must have had refugees from Earth too. I think it a little more likely that that "accident" and subsequent war was planned/instigated. However, at its simplest, it may just be that the ruler(s) of EDEN wants control and power, as leongsh said.
As for my comments on Episode 2, it was so AWESOME in every way. What especially caught my eye were the drawn backgrounds of the city and dome. They surpassed those in Ep 1, and were truly beautiful to behold. A beautiful vision of EDEN indeed. That's not all. Then, there were the hawt 3DCG scenes. Who can forget the 2 vehicular slow-mo scenes? One of the crashing bike (omg the detail) and the other of the lunar jump (*shiver*). Totally Amazing. Eye candy aside, the development of events in this episode really really emphasized the potential this show has. A budding friendship between former rivals? A developing love for a woman that is literally worlds apart? Too, a developing resistance to the control placed upon him. More important, the fact that all is not what it was and that the truth is deliberately being suppressed. I'm in the same boat as monir when I say that I can't wait.
On a side note, Takeru really really reminds me of Shu, a character very special to me.
The Episode 3 preview/trailer is available from the Freedom OVA website (Link to preview (http://freedom-project.jp/?filenumber=3009)). The action heats up more :D
Episode 3 will be broadcast on Yahoo Japan for 72 hours from Friday, 20 April 2007 (same deal as was done for Episode 2). This is the precursor to the official release of the Volume 3 DVD (for Episode 3) on Wednesday, 25 April 2007.

Even better was when they said that those people are going to be "reeducated". Those poor captives are going to be brainwashed imo. Hopefully, we get to see some of that in the next episode.
So now we get to see another version of what happened to the Earth. I bet they are going to get arrested after re-entry.
I wonder how much Nissin pays per episode.. >.<.
In other news, an interesting Freedom Project-related article crept up in The Straits Times newspaper today:
http://img523.imageshack.us/img523/5813/cci00003sssii3.jpg
Basically it reported about a 28 year-old Singaporean man whose dreams of becoming an Animator started off after watching Katsuhiro Otome's Akira in primary school. It highlights that he's the first Singaporean and foreign animator working at Sunrise, and possibly any major animation project; and yes, the said project is none other than Freedom Project which as we know Otome is rather heavily involved in. He, together with a senior colleague, is in-charge of the lighting for Freedom Project, "tweaking the lighting to simulate a 2D effect." It goes on to talk about his education path (he came from the same polytechnic I'm graduating from ) and how he feels about working as an animator on a "Katsuhiro Otome project." An excerpt I found of interest: "I mean really long hours, like straight 15- to 16-hour days for weeks on end. Public holidays and overtime pay do not exist in our dictionary."
It's very interesting that such an article should appear. Anime-related stuff rarely makes the news, and for it to be featured on a mainstream newspaper is not something seen everyday.
I just picked up this series and saw all three and a half episodes released thus far. Even though I want to see more of Katsuhiro Otomo's intricate mechanical designs, I'm also anxious to see wait will happen on Earth.

With content that you have to download that should have been on the disk and a key to download to unlock what you already bought, I'd rather wait for the Blu-ray version. This version (http://www.animeondvd.com/reviews2/disc_reviews/6337.php) is a crippled release imo.

$40 for one episode? :eyebrow: And how much is the Blu-ray going to cost?

Don't know. It hasn't been announced (http://www.animeondvd.com/forum/showtopic.php?tid/18821/tp/1/) yet. But other BV titles eventually show up as Blu-ray so I'm playing the waiting game.
HD R2 version is available online only now.
Anyone who was complaining about prices before this release now know that it can get worse. :heh:

I took a few comparison shots between the DVD and HDDVD versions of Freedom Vol. 1

Actually, the only support from me for this title is via a rental. I will not buy a crippled release. The 7 min prelude video is locked and only available for HD players. The rest of Prelude video content is downloadable only for HD players only.
DVD users have only 1 episode and a next episode preview for $40 MSRP. HD users have to unlock features that they've already bought and download things that should have been on the disc in the first place.
This R1 release is a trainwreck imo. Before now, I actually had faith in BV USA. Now with this release, I'm almost at the point of wishing that BV would pack up and go back to Japan if they don't change their pricing and release strategy. :frustrated:
Thank you for working hard on this release. Now please get your R1 pricing and release act together.
Yes, I know you said that you're from Sunrise. Please relay these comments back to BV too.
And...welcome to the forum. :)
And we have lift off!
Luckily those who bought the series in HD DVD can finish it in R1 since this volume has been solicited.
And the DVD for Freedom 7 (i.e. episode 7) is also out in Japan. The last episode is about 49 minutes in length (equivalent to a double episode). It ends as expected, if you have watched enough of these kind of shows, with a straightforward wrap-up.
