Not much to say about this episode except this:
Kasai is the man.

First minute... o__O;
*continues watching*
Edit: Waha~ I feel like I did when I started watching Higurashi. XD
That was the best club activity yet. <3 The penalty game also... Rika-chama and Satoko were 本当にかぁあい!
And Rena... her points are sure adding up in how much I love her. XD She can't compare to Mion in my heart, but uuwa. I loved her little space in the junk mound. Go get Rina, Rena! Rena-chan omochikaeri! (her omochikaeri modes this time was <3 too.)
This episode made my dissapointment with DEEN lessen a bit, even though I still expect them to mess up on the rest of this... .__.; It's nice to see such lively scenes animated though. <3
Rena is badass. The return of a happy Shion is welcome. I wish I could understand more of the conversation in the restaurant.
The penalty game penalty was great. Need to get some screen caps of that :D

Amazing, for once, I actually think they did a really good job with the episode. Hell, they even did Rena's confession scene at the dump in the beginning, just like it was in the game (although it's probably only natural, since they always do a spoiler scene at the beginning of every new scenario. But still, that intro was big for me in Tsumihoroboshi, so I'm very glad to see it in the beginning). To be picky, the scene felt a little too tense and aggressive, whereas my memory of the game intro was a very soft and melancholic one (probably because of the music).
The only unfortunate thing was that they had to practically cut out Rena's entire reminiscence of her childhood, leaving only a couple of short cutscenes. And they skipped her accounts about what happened between her and Oyashirosama completely.
But looking at the other parts of the episode, I realize that this can't be helped: if they tried to cover Rena's past more, then the other parts of the episode will be inevitably cut out. And considering how much I liked how they covered the other scenes (they did an especially good job with the water gun fight, and the cafe scene, because a large amount of the episode was devoted to them), I can't complain.
The sakuga quality for this episode is also far more stable compared to others (or maybe it's just because I'm used to seeing Shion's face collapse :heh: ). Shion's colorful expressions and Rena's "..gu!" at the very end were all very nice. See? you don't have to resort to weird faces to have a dramatic effect.
Rina's voice felt a little too mature at times, but generally, it matched her image well.
- 50 points for not showing Rena-pan.
- 50 points for not showing Mion's cheap-ass water machingun
but
+ 50 points for: Rena: 「見直したより、惚れ直したの方が嬉しいかな!」
+ 100 points for faithfully reproducing the punishment game costumes.
+ 200 points for faithfully reproducing maid maniac Iri.
Next week preview, ...they're going that far already?

I really need subs for this one, since I didn't get most of the dialogue.
What I think I got out of it:
Rina and Houjou Teppei are in cahoots, and cheat and clobber people out of their money. I'm guessing that "mizu no onna" means a prostitute.
Rena heard it all, and wants to stop her dad from remarrying Rina.
And yes, Kasai is the man.
"...and he's gonna save me if my life is in danger!"
"いや”
In Tsumihoroboshi arc, Rena became as Kenchi. Answer everthing in Onikakushi arc but as reverse situation.

How low can Rina's pants go? And Rena in her black jumpsuit was definitely a surprise... She looks good in it, but I still recommend a skirt. As for Dr. Lolipedofin Irie, I wouldn't mind borrowing Rena's cleaver and personally going after him now.

Speaking of the beginning, I really liked the music they played. I couldn't understand it (I watched the raw to do a sort-of test on my Japanese skills, and because it's rena) but I kind of got that the last line may have been something like "Ryuguu Rena will do her best to start a happy life" (not sure, but i know the speech did have to deal with happiness)
The rest of the episode was pretty good, and I can already assume that
Rena will end up killing Rina, then stuff her into the bag and float it down the marsh (whom the old people find in tatarigoroshi)
lols at Irie's omochikaeri mode:heh:
And Rena in her black jumpsuit was definitely a surprise... She looks good in it
I think so too!!:love::love:
Too bad we didn't get to see Rena's super chubby hands of death in action. That would be so cute:love:
Lot's of plus points for Satoko from me in this episode.

I don't know what else to say. It's like the animators found out my weakness:heh:
So much omochikaeriiiiiness, it made me want to go into *omochikaeriiii* mode too several times. And also lots of kana kananess from Rena:love:
They even equiped Rena with the kanakanakana laughter:eyespin: **
plus point +++++++++++
yep, they definitely found out my weakness:upset: *worries*
Now I don't know what else to do other than rewatching untill I can see Rena's bloody cleaver in action...O_o
*expects a lot of bloody awesomeness next episode*

I'm another one of those people who is still just practicing Japanese in these raws. It'll be a long week waiting for LostBlue-sama and the rest of the WinD crew to sub this one.
But, whoa, after Meakashi-hen I did not expect a format like this... I had managed so far to not be spoiled as to which question arc Tsumihoroboshi-hen answers (though, since it is Rena-centric it seems like it answers Onikakushi-hen). I was expecting something like Meakashi-hen where we would see (more or less) the same events from someone else's perspective. Once again I have to give kudos to the Higurashi writer(s) for keeping me off balance.
And what a preview teaser! I love how one brief image can invoke so much anticipation. It looks like we're gonna actually see Rena's nasty looking knife put into action! :D Though, judging by Sushi-Y's response they're gonna skip a lot. Makes sense, considering they're only putting 5 episodes for Tsumihoroboshi-hen
Anyway, I'm really exited to see what's next.
Rena will end up killing Rina, then stuff her into the bag and float it down the marsh (whom the old people find in tatarigoroshi)
With that full-on Watanagashi torture too? Sure, it looks like there's a good chance that Rena will Kill Rina, but I'm not gonna jump farther than that just yet. Still, it makes you wonder what Rena has been doing behind the scenes all this time. I've been wondering lately what she and Mion have been up to. What with their whispering in Onikakushi-hen and especially when, in Watanagashi-hen 4, Rena suggests to Mion (or Shion, whatever) that she give up to the police and offers to 'go with' her. Does this mean that Rena's done something, that Mion knows about, that the police would arrest her for?
Also, I've just seen Onikakushi-hen again recently and I've noticed a couple possible patterns for the trigger to K1's insanity.
Pattern 1- The more K1 hid from Rena and Mion, the more his level of insanity would increase.
Pattern 2- Every time K1 spoke with Ooishi, his level of insanity would increase.
In Onikakushi-hen, the whole thing is about secrets and trust. The less that K1 trusted Rena and Mion, the more nuts he would get. Whether it was with malice or not, Ooishi was always undermining that trust.
In Watanagashi-hen/Meakashi-hen, K1 trusted his friends until the very end. He believed in Mion even when he thought that Mion was a torturous murderer and was gonna kill him. Unlike K1 though, Shion mistrusted Mion and her family... and she went crazy. Takano was the one undermining Shion's trust this time.
As for Tatarigoroshi-hen, K1's trust of his friend's was never really questioned. What happened in Tatarigoroshi-hen I am pretty certain was a different thing than what happened in Onikakushi-hen. The only person I think who may have had the Onikakushi-hen "curse" was Satoko.
Now the question is: Is this mistrust another symptom of the "curse"? Or is it related to the cause?
Well I've written enough, and should stop now. Just one more thing:
In Tsumihoroboshi arc, Rena became as Kenchi. Answer everthing in Onikakushi arc but as reverse situation.
I don't know how others might feel about it, but to me, this is a spoiler. :( I have been avoiding reading the yet-aired arc descriptions on wiki for this very reason.

That's ok, because it's not really true. The main character of Tsumihoroboshi-hen is indeed Rena, but the story is certainly not "Rena becoming Keiichi and doing the stuff Keiichi did in Onikakushi-hen". Their circumstances may appear similiar, but their stories aren't the same.
*phew, that's better*
With that full-on Watanagashi torture too? Sure, it looks like there's a good chance that Rena will Kill Rina, but I'm not gonna jump farther than that just yet. Does this mean that Rena's done something, that Mion knows about, that the police would arrest her for?
Oh wow, I completely forgot about that!
I remember when I watched Tatarigoroshi-hen 1 for the first time, I thought the murder was a group effort (Keichii= broken legs with the bat, Rena cut open the stomach, and Mion did the nails) Maybe I wasn't too far off? That would be extremely cool though, if they all decided to become a team and kill everyone that was ruining thier lives.
I still have no idea where this arc is going though. But I do like how all the chapters have a different theme to them
Onikakushi= Paranoia
Watanagashi= Love/Revenge(though we don't know it was revenge at first)
Tatarigoroshi= Protecting your friends, even if it meant going to the extreme
Himatsubishi= i guess it can be Trust, though the arc was pretty much just a flashback
Meakashi= Love/Revenge, again, but the story was told from the killer's POV
Tsumihoroboshi= Happiness

well, I've seen the raw, and I understood very little, but...
I'm in love with Rena all over again. ○_○
Really, I can't believe how well that scene went. It almost felt like watching Higurashi for the very first time.
I am really glad that they used that song as the Background for that scene. It went so perfectly.
And the water-gun fight scene was just amazing. I can only imagine how the fight between Rena and K1 will go. This episode has surely jolted me back up, especially since the previous arcs were not following my expectations..

A small detail and not important, I'm sure, but one of the things that stood out to me while watching this episode: one of the items on the pile that Rena's dad was saying that he was going to throw out was the Kenta-kun figure that Rena was trying to dig out of the trash dump in the first story arch. The left lens of its glasses was broken just like the original doll in the dump.
It maked me wonder: in this arch, I guess Keiichi must have helped her dig it out before the story starts?

Finally saw the EP. ^__________________^ 10
Reina's past was the only major thing skipped which is understandable considering the time constraint. Actually, I think those flashback scenes gave a good feel for the short amount of time dedicated to them.
Reina's past should go up in the TIPs section... It's a bit fast how far they'll go with the next EP but being that there is only 4 EPs left the pacing is about right.
My only wish they kept the momentary silence before Rena started her speech. The description of everyone's expression was very... sentimental. Keiichi looking around, Satoko squatting on the ground, Mion looking away, Rika starring into space looking straight up in the sky... with a difficult expression on her face. The everyone following her lead before Rena breaks the silence with her speech. It was powerful, but not terrible important. Loved the EP.

A great episode - it just draws you in.
Poor Rena - she obviously is going to prevent her father from getting
drawn further into the trap but it might be too late.
First half was just too much fun. It's been ages since there has been a club activity with bonus penalty game. What a hot duel at the end. And just watching Satoko be the tough girl, Rika with her adorable smile, and Rena's i-want-to-take-you-all-home attitude has made my day :D.
But unfortunately, all happy moments must come to an end sooner or later. And in this case, it was just too soon :(. Having never read the manga or played the game, it was quite depressing for me to learn about Rena's past and present situation. Oh why oh why does she have to take up shelter in such a sad and empty place... why do all these terrible things have to happen to sweet Rena... but the story has now been set up and I cheer Rena on. Please be happy.
Man, this series like Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. After last week's disappointment this episode was more than welcome and worth the wait.
The fun part with the competition penalty game was fun. Satoko's "evil genius" type of laughter always cracks me up. :) And Irie appeared out of the blue a bit like Renge in Ouran. I didn't really expect to see Shion in this arc so I was pleasantly surprised by this too.
This Teppei dude just goes from bad to worse, I wouldn't mind at all if he is killed for sure this time in this arc. I would never in a million years have guessed the arc will have to do with him and Rina against Rena. The relationships between the characters are so exquisitely twisted and surprising. I might stop with the guesses until I see one or two episodes more of Tsumihoroboshi.

This episode.... just defies words for me. The opening scene is the best i have ever seen in a long time across various media.
I can't wait to see what happens to Rena. Heart her.
Also - made a screen saver of that scene... but bumped it all up a notch -

fun start which is a nice change from the gore :heh:
rika is soo cute in the maids outfit and rena doesnt hesitate to "want to take her home" XD
erm so rena's parents got divorced...and she started acting violent...i can see mental problems developing :(
it startes to go down hill for sure and i will predict that rena tries to warn her dad but he takes no notice at all and even screams at rena...which will cause her to go killing mode -.-

Wow, a excellent episode compared to the last. I loved the club activity and the penalty game afterwards. Very enjoyable episode.
For a long time, I though Rena was an orphan since they never showed her parents. Now I finally know she's not and her parents are divorced. Depressing stuff going on with these characters. Can't wait for the next ep.
A good dramatized episode that faithfully portrays Rena's reaction towards Rina's deceit and betrayal of the latter's trust.
In regards to Rina's fate previously shown in Tatarigoroshi-hen.....
I do not think that Rena was at fault for that bitch's demise. She was more of Wataganshi -ed.
Stomach cut and intestines disemboweled; nose torn off; 20 nails hammered on her right hand.
That sounds more like the workings of the Sonozaki family or someone else's acknowledged with the Wataganashi methods.
Anyways, returning to topic.....
Do I wonder if Kasai had a run-in and was scammed by Rina in the past?
His reaction to when Shion asks him if he was tricked before seems like a dead giveaway, however, I may be just too serious overanalyzing a matter trivial to the current issue Rena's facing.
But, when Kasai entered the café, Rina addressed him formally just as she knew him from some time, after Teppei and his debtors left, and Kasai averted his eyesight from her.

Really good episode
We seriously need some うそだ! in this arc. The Kaais and Omochi Kaeris are already there :D
Now we have some info on the "Rina" that died on Tatarigoroshi, maybe even her killer... (Rena you're the best... hehe, but maybe that was just the Sonozakis, who knows...)
Just some babbling...
About that talk with Kasai in the end, when Shion asks if a woman had tricked Kasai before... It's just a blind guess (and maybe not really important) but the first thing I thought was that this woman is Akane Sonozaki (Shion's mother) hehehehe Maybe that's why Kasai is so careful with Shion.
A really great Episode. Now my Rena love has surpassed my Mion/Shin love again :heh: The whole Episode was amazing 10/10 :D
Will the Machete be used in this Scenario? I wonder...

God i cant wait to see Rena go into a killing frenzy on that whore, never mess with a girls dad. We got a look into Rena's past and see how she ends up in the town with her dad. Seems like her mom was whore too getting pregnant by some other guy while still being married to her dad. Looks like she had an anger issue before she came to town.
If i remember correctly Rena had an incident at her old school something like bashing in windows and clubing some students nearly to death. Can we assume that her mothers affair and her mother trying to turn her against her father had something to do with her unstable personality coming to the surface

The way Shion explained is. When a women baits/sets up a man to get his money. she dates the man till he falls for her then another guy comes along claims that the women is really his and then the other guy blackmails the unsuspecting man into giving him money to stay quiet. Basically if it got in a small town that you were having an affair with another mans women the whole town would look down on you and most like would stop associating with you as well

Yeah, all of the other chapters except Himastubushi-hen seem to have started slightly later chronologically than Onikakushi-hen starts.
Oh, and I really enjoyed this episode. I think Rena is my favorite character so I'll be glad to see a lot of her, even if what she goes through isn't going to be pleasant. Go detective Rena, you can do it!

It was really nice to have an episode without killing and insanity now and then.
Also it's great we get to finally see Rena's story. Will we finally find out exactly why she was cursed by Oyashiro-sama?
Maaaaaaaaaaan!!! I really sympathize with Rena! Maybe because that what happened to her also happened to me? (my parents divorced and I was given a choice wether to live with father or mother, who had a new man....)
Plus her KAWAIINESS!!!! And her speech at the beggining of the epi... Rena in black tracksuit FTW! Want more KeiichixRena!!! Or better - RenaxMe!
RENA > CHESS
CHESS = ALL
About the epi: I lolled hardc0rez at the whole Penalty Game... Irie appearing out of nowhere yelling "OMOCHI KAERII!", and then Rena (may the force be with her) telling him that those are her belongings lol....
Is Rena Gilgamesh? Imagine her casting Gate of Babylon with machettes and saying "That belongs to me, the queen!"
O` hail Rena, the Blood Queen!

Its the return of pissed off Rena! :D Rena is so much more likable when her killer instinct kicks in. (I find her to be a pretty bland character most of the time... I never got what was so great about detective Rena, and her cutegasms dull in comparison to Kureha's)
I get the feeling that I may come to like her more than Keiichi and Rika (tie for my second favorite character behind Mion and non-psycho Shion, who tie for my first) in this story arc.
Also, I hate that pink haired woman's voice.
*nods*
Yeah, Rina looks ugly, has irritiating voice and has pink hair >_< Well, she`s the bad one in this arc, ne?
BTW, I can`t belive how is this possible for Keiichi to not fall for Rena ^^ I mean, if there`s any man who can resist her kawaiiness, he must be gay. (no offence, no offence)

Hmm... maybe I should have explained it better...
What really was said was 美人局 [read as つつもたせ/tsutsumotase]. Basically this is a blackmail extortion scheme often targeting married men to destroy their public image unless the victim pays a hefty fee to keep it a secrete. The closest thing I could think of was badger game (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Badger_game) but that might have been an uniquely american term. I appologize if I wasn't clear enough.

but... there is something i don`t really get it. what king laugh Rena`s make when the shooting game ended ?
here`s the detail:
Keichi`s style: he..he...he...he !
Rena`s Style: (i think) ka..maka..maka..maka..maka..maka..na !!
But i don`t really sure about that.

I just noticed, in the dub at least, in Rena's flashback...her mom calls her 'Rena', not 'Reina' (Also Rina seems to call her 'Reina' but I think that's just her VA pronouncing it wrong so I don't count that as a mistake). Is that a mistake in the Japanese version as well? Is it just because the Anime didn't really need to distinguish 'Rena' and 'Reina'?
I remember in Onikakushi that Ooishi told Keiichi her real name was 'Reina' when he said she was born in Hinamizawa, but I also know the Anime (at least season 1) doesn't explain why Rena changed her name and removed that 'i'. I'm just curious if this was a dub mistake/mispronunciation, or an Anime mistake in general to call her 'Rena' in the flashback.

Actually it was a mistake in the dub for Episode 22, where people who should call her "Reina" call her "Rena" (Mom and Rina), but for Episode 23 the dub fixes its mistake and Rina starts calling her Reina

But if that's the case, then the dub made a double-mistake. The only way Rina could know Rena's real name would be if she somehow knew the Ryuugu's previously, which is not the case.

Unless Rina SOMEHOW knows that Rena's name is Reina, I'm holding to a mistake being made, including in the Japanese.

Maybe Mr. Ryuugu told Rina.

Hmmm, that's interesting, because her father does call her Reina in this episode.
