From MOON PHASE
http://d.hatena.ne.jp/moonphase/20060907
This will be the 3rd Kino no Tabi anime and the 2nd time it's made into a movie.
SWEEEET~~~~~!!!
Great news!
But isn't this a fourth Kino anime? There is a TV series, OVA and the first movie, or do they count series and OVA as one...
Well, this is something to wait for.
What OVA are you referring to?
Great :D I'm really looking forward for this :D
Off topic:
And welcome back dreamless :) (were have you been? LOL)
What OVA are you referring to?
http://www.animesuki.com/series.php/603.html - the 12-minute special episode, or was it even an OVA, I don't know. :heh:
:p :p :p :p :p So awesome. Can't read Japanese, so I have no idea what that page said, but more Kino = always good. An anime version of Gakuen Kino would also be more than welcome.

That page basically says "Kino no Tabi anime movie production decided! This will be the 3rd Kino no Tabi anime and the 2nd time it's made into a movie. Will it be like last movie which only screens in one theatre? Will it be released on the same day as the Shakugan no Shana movie?"
Yup, More Kino = Always GOOD!!! :D
Atleast your page Translates to Japaniese....mines is all ???????????
OH SHI-! This is awesome!!! Yes! :D :D :D </fangirl>
No really, this is amazing. Kino no Tabi rocks! I hope the director will be the same as the TV series :) Cos the previous movie was more lackluster, IMO (although I only watched the entama version or whatever you call it)
I think the OVA is not really counted because it was more of like... a pilot film or something than an intended OVA on its own.
Moonphase is also wondering if it'll be screened at the same time as Shakugan no Shana. Bah, I couldn't care less as long as it's good :D. Although don't you think Kino looks unusually curvy in this picture (http://d.hatena.ne.jp/moonphase/20060907)?
(ps welcome back, dreamless! When I saw the thread I thoguht it was a regurgitation of some really ancient thread you posted about the previous Kino no Tabi movie, but then it turns out to be one about the new movie :))

That 12 minute "OVA" episode 0 was intended as a promotion for the TV series, so it counts as part of that TV series. It is the episode 0 that comes before episodes 1-13

Awesome.
What's Gakuen Kino?
Although don't you think Kino looks unusually curvy in this picture (http://d.hatena.ne.jp/moonphase/20060907)?
I didn't recognise that as Kino at first, maybe its the hair..? It looks purplish and much longer too. But yes she looks more curvy than usual. I think she looks older.

At least that looks more like her than the picture on the thinpak cover. That image is just everything that Kino isn't. Here's a picture of Kino looking dangerous and sexy.
http://s03.imagehost.org/0846/DKJBX2_C.jpg
That photo doesn't quite do the image justice, but you can see that the thinpak cover is even curvier than the movie picture on Moonphase. When I saw that on the cover of the thinpak I was thinking that it seemed they were trying to sell an entirely different show than the one I remember so fondly.
They're messing with the Kino I am so fond of.
Okay, I wouldn't mind Kino being like that, IF the movie was set when she was older. Because obviously such change (only the physical changes, the hair, the curves; not in attitude/mindset, I want Kino to be the same inside) would be neccessary. At least its a move to realism, the lack of which I felt was responsible for ruining Kino no Tabi to an extent for me.
But if they are doing that just to "sexualize" her for more market appeal I would be very very pissed.
Well that's why she's wearing hip huggers and and is pointing her gun that way. Sex sells.
I just hope that the rest of Kino makes it over here, including this movie.
I think it would be very interesting to see Kino grow older in the show. This is one show where I wasn't looking at how realistic the settings were, but the individual stories and the meaning of those stories. And the way it was brought across... I guess this is one of those shows where I worship the story so much I don't really care about the rest.
Although this is just me theorizing, perhaps the style of those illustrations could be because of the original illustrator Kouhaku Kuroboshi (that was his name, right?). I think he's usually one of those more moe and cute-type illustrators (consider the fact that he's a co-illustrator for Sky Girls (http://www.konami.jp/visual/skygirls/character/index.html) of all things) and so he interpreted Kino in that way, rather than the more serious and sombre way the anime did.
I don't mind Kino looking older at all, but I agree with NSW about that thinpak cover - that pose is so unlike her!! And the curviness of her butt...
It isn't an illustration only for Western releases, it was also on the 5th Japanese DVD (http://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/images/B00077D990/ref=dp_image_text_0/249-1339849-9543555?ie=UTF8)
And out of pure off-topicness, interestingly he enjoyed Noein and drew a fanart (http://blog34.fc2.com/k/kuroboshi/file/atori.jpg) of it as well... and he's a self-proclaimed hikikomori... but that's got nothing to do with anything.
Althoguh I sure as hell would NOT want to see an anime version of Gakuen Kino... from the short description I read here (http://www.mediaworks.co.jp/topics/060707_bunko0606/index.php) in Japanese (you can see a picture too), it's like a dark comedy come true - they seriously made a alternate-universe Kino in a high-school setting with a totally different personality and her having a secret side as a monster-battling gun-toting fighter... with a Really Popular Sempai to boot (in the picure at the link above; looks vaguely similar to the original Kino in Kino no Tabi?)
What the hell :( Kino no Tabi, school-comedified... I can't bring myself to watch it... ok, I'm taking it too seriously but still...
I'll just pretend I never saw it :)
I was just laughing at the thought of people buying the DVD expecting the eye-candy as the one on the cover and then getting disappointed to see an entirely different Kino. Hermes is so much more hotter :p Jk. Its not a question of hotness, Kino is Kino and as you said wao, its the story that is focus; I am disappointed that they resorted to drawing her more sexily. If it was confined to appearing as upcoming Movie Art or Fan Art it would be okay, but its actually appearing on the series DVDs and being used to sell them, so thats obviously a sad ploy to heighten the sex appeal, in the process misrepresenting the Anime Kino; no, in fact misrepresenting the whole series.
If this gets the rest of Kino over here, I personally don't care about the appearance of the cover art as long as it looks good, delas with the story not like the previous Nausicaa and looks like Kino. It looks cute actually. ADV has to make money off this title after all.

Heh. On the Kino LJ, someone is summarizing it. It seems that it's a parody of magical girl anime and sounds hysterical. Shizu's magical boy name is Samoyed Mask.

Kino indeed looks a bit older and even more mature (can that be even possible? :p) than beore ;)
Thanks for the link Veritas, well now that I've read it at least it seems like it's taking itself and the terribly overused genre lightly. Now I can accept it. A bit.
Pardon my double-posting, but to any Kino no Tabi fans here, what do you think of the movie trailer? There's a low-quality recording of the one shown at Winter Comiket here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NzAR5ZL37Sg
I was a bit worried at first at the most terribly moe animation of the little girl, and the slightly... flat... kind of visuals (as in, it didn't have that nice charm that the original show had). Most of the stills were stuff that's already available on the main site, but here's hoping that Ryutarou Nakamura and co. will do a good job with the depiction of the city and its lifelessness as well as with the impact of the story, rather than just making it a moemoe show as the producers might want.
Also, the last few seconds certainly took me by surprise (and I most certainly don't mind it).

I really trust Ryutarou Nakamura. After making such an amazing series, he can't screw up at the second movie, really. Still, Kino's 'new' character design sure looks weird. Anyway, we'll just wait and see.
Well to be fair to him, I think he didn't direct the first "movie". That was directed by some other dude. No wonder I didn't feel it was as good as the series; but I really do hope this movie will be good. And it's scripted by Chiaki Konaka isn't it? From what I saw (although I haven't rewatched it to check).

To me, this new design is more faithful to the original illustration than the old one. Still, I'm not very sastified =w=~* I love Kino's hairstyle and hidden femininity in the original illust sooooooo much, but none of anime designs seems to be able to truely follow it...(I know I'm being too mean but...^^ili) Most importantly, she's described to have a slender figure (though not very tall nor busty), so the first anime design was completely off for me.
Off the topic, I know we never watch Kino no Tabi for romance. Well, you might be interested to know that many of Japanese fans are into ShizuxKino pairing; though, up to 10 volumes, they met just twice. Most of these fanworks are good at making Kino godly (stoic)sweet and MOE(adorable's just not enough) without ruining much of her original characteristic. They are also good at making excuses for Kino to break down and cry in Shizu's arm---in an almost non-OOC way ^^ili At first, I didn't like this ShizuKino thing at all but started to find it entertaining after reading through a very nice fanfiction. Anyway, the creators and us readers have mutual understanding that all of these are our pure fantasies and that there're no sort of things going on in the original novel. So, no serious business here O-<.

question, how is it appealing when you cannot tell the gender of the main character?? wtf? when i first started watching the show couple of months ago, this was the main thing i absolutely hated. i really hated how the anime made her look like "she-male" im not sure i understand it. Is it an otaku thing? i know that theres some adoration for "maids" and "lolis" (which i am yet to understand) dont get me wrong, i love anime and am an avid fan, but i love anime because of the stories, character development, overarchs, reinterpretation, style, writing, insights and social commentary, but i have never understood the fascination with "moe" or cute girls who look 12, but are embodying sexuality. I really loved kino's mature demeanor and it always contradicted her physical appearance, and that alone almost ruined the experience for me. Thank God the stories and writing was phenomenal. I was actually excited when i saw a pic that had her actually looking like a woman, but after seeing the link that the legendary Nao posted, i hopes for this movie has been shattered.
o well... everyone cant be pleased. To each his own. Anime is a subjective medium, and the subjectivity i believe is probably the greatest aspect. Different anime touch different folk differently. Although sometimes we get shit like Haruhi which is ridiculously overrated and overhyped.... but i digress...

I'm sorry, maybe it's because my confusing English, but Kauldron26, you've got me wrong. (and your "wtf?" did make me think I said something REALLY wrong)
I'm pretty much like you, I prefer feminine Kino. I enjoy every single original illustration and fanworks that portray her in feminine ways. Personally, for me, it would be a blessing if Kuroboshi-sensei actually draw her like a lady. The fact is; he doesn't. But atleast he gives her some hidden femininity, right? Contrary to the anime and movie design. That's why I said "I love Kino's hairstyle and hidden femininity in the original illust sooooooo much", since you cannot hope for any explicit femininity from her, this is the best we can get. Let's cope with it.
And, it is not an otaku trend. If they really want to sell Kino, they could have draw her feminine, give her sparkling big eyes and flowing hair, and a sexy body. Kuroboshi-sensei has his reason; he simply has to follow the writer, Sigsawa-sensei. Again, Sigsawa-sensei doesn't intend to make Kino a she-male. There are many, many reasons, deep and shallow, of why Kino does not act nor care to look feminine. And these reasons, we readers have to find out from the story. I try to avoid discussing the reasons here since it will probably initiate a very lengthy discussion, which I do not have enough language skill to fully convey my opinion. Personally, I do not think Kino is a she male, nor a tomboy, nor a les----. Kino is KINO---didn't she always say "Please don't call me young lady, my name is KINO"?
Kino is 99% simply referred to as KINO, not "she" nor other pronoun in original novel. This holds meaning.
So, no matter how much I enjoy feminine Kino in fanarts, drool over blushing Kino when she gets kissed on cheek by Shizu in fanfiction, pissed off at anime designs or get upset by someone who claim that Kino is a tomboy, everytime I pick up the original novel and anime, I put my fangirlness aside and go by the rule "Kino is KINO".
Because I don't think she'd love me to call her young lady.
(Since it's preserved for Shizu xD~!)
I apologize if something written here irritate you.

i apologize i didnt mean to seem confrontational, i thought my approach was more a curious intellectual contribution to ur statement. I now understand where ur coming form. maybe i should start using emoticons. and where i come from "wtf", is more of a jokey rhetorical statement not a diss. anyways, back to Kino, do u have any idea what the movie wil be focusing on i.e. what philosophical questions will be raised? it seems Kino's perspectives revolved around existentialism. I'm curious to know if that changed.
lol... kino with sparkling eyes and big boobs will be horrible, that would go against her entire personality. I just wish they were making her look like a WOMAN and less like a tomboy.
When i think of Kino grown up, she sorta looks like MAO from FMP. What do u think??

Ah, I apologize for misunderstood you too. Anyway, nice to meet you!
When i think of Kino grown up, she sorta looks like MAO from FMP. What do u think??
Haven't watched FMP though but wikipedia says Mao is a ruthless one? Saya from Blood+ may be another choice. They share some personalities.
The movie will be focused on a novel chapter called "The country of sickness". Due to my poor Japanese, I haven't reached that chapter, and plus I left the novels at home(now I'm studying in Japan). People who have read it, of course, they don't really want to spoil us ^^ili So now I know nothing more than Kino visiting a country and meet a sick girl.
But if you let me guess; that girl is not sick O-<~*
And it's announced there'll be a second season of Kino. I was very happy to hear the news but then they said Shizu, Riku, Shishou and Deshi won't make any appearance...my happiness was suddenly halved...sniff. I miss Riku. If I were to pet a dog like him, I won't need any blanket or pillow. And how I want to see Shishou kicks some ass XD~!
lol... kino with sparkling eyes and big boobs will be horrible, that would go against her entire personality. I just wish they were making her look like a WOMAN and less like a tomboy.<< Read Gakuen Kino :D Although she's still a teenage girl not a full-grown woman. Ah,...I personally want to see this spin-off turned into an OVA. Sigsawa-sensei rocks!
Ps. Try out the website in my Sig. Yomo-san, I really like her drawing style. She was even kind enough to answer my e-mails written in broken Japanese. Too bad Yomo-san removed most of her old pictures which are very nice. Check out 101title, most of them are a bit sketchy though. I recommend 005(love that expression:) ), 012 and 063(so cute>w<). If you happen to like her drawings, tell me and I'll e-mail her old works to you. Caution: some ShizuKino and OOCness, avoid title 056 at your own risk ^^ (though it's my favourite, hehe).
They're having a second season of Kino? But without Shishou?! I've never read the novels but.... oh damn, that sucks. :( Where did you get the info from? (I'm too lazy to check moonphase lalala)
When he said a grown up Kino will be like Mao, I think he meant she will look like Mao. Not really act like Mao. They have a similar hairstyle.
Personality-wise, in my head I always thought that Kino would turn out to be like a softer version of Motoko Kusanagi from GITS when she grows up.
My guess is that the story will be something along the lines of those futuristic dystopic cities where there's a disease killing everyone off or something like that and this happy-smiley-moe little girl is some sort of anomaly in that society.
I do hope they make it more interesting than that though, but I guess I'll withhold any proper judgement until the movie itself shows. I have faith in Ryutarou Nakamura.

A place where you can find nice people who are good at Japanese, have read all the novels and always translate news for us (plus teasing us with some spoilers sometimes). Stay tuned to this community and get the lastest news on Kino no Tabi! You can grab many goodies like icons, fanarts and the famous Miss Mingling's KnT wallpapers from here. Wredwrat's doujinshi is very entertaining. There's also a Thai illustrator who drops here every now and then to post her awesome illusts.

I don't quite understand the complaint that Kino acts mature, but doesn't look like it. She's a traveler. What she wears and how she looks is not masculine, it's practical. Riding a motorcycle in dirt, alone, does not lend itself to accomodating much in the way of luxury.
Hehe.. this is the Kino I want to see (http://www.wratbox.com/crap/kinomauser_wp1024.jpg). Source from the Kino LJ Jellyfish Marine posted.

OMG? A gun named flute? Too awesome!!! *has this image in her head of Kino picking off pheasants with a long rifle* Sorry, that's what I think of when I think rifle. ;) It makes more sense though. It's always bothered me that Kino hunts rabbits with a handgun. It's the hunter in me I guess ;)
About the preview:
ooooooh! So exciting!! I wish I knew what they were saying! I SWEAR kino said "sakura kino" in one part... but maybe that's just my hearing.... ooooohhhh... must. learn. more. japanese. ARGH! The end of it rather creeped me out though. Makes me wonder... oooohhh! so excited!
As for the character design changes, they look AWESOME! KINO FIXED HER COWLICK!! ;-D YAY! That's one thing that always bothered me about anime Kino. that tuft of bangs that splayed out like that. The new character design actually LOOKS like someone who's been wearing a hat all day. YAY! Only thing that bothers me is in some of the scenes her eyes and her colors seemed a little too muted and lackluster. However, that may be just because it's not the final production that's been cleaned up and/or it's an effect to add to the scene. and AGAIN they are messing with her hair color... is it brown or black? ACK!
Now to geek out a little on Hermes' character design changes. I don't like that they made his star smaller. I know it's more true to original designs and more realistic, but it takes away from his kinda "whiney little kid" personality. However, I like that they've streamlined him somewhat, and made him a bit longer, made him a bit more deserving of the nickname "rolls royce of motorcycles".
{hmmm... I'll haffa crosspost this part of my comments to LJ}

I guess what I remember is that she was only 12 when she left home, and she prolly spent 2 or 3 years with shishou (aka master) so she's only 14-16. This is a more appropriate way a kid that age should/does look. I know I was still pretty flat-chested and non-curvy at 15. Or maybe I'm just a freak of a late blossomer. Heh.
On a seperate thought, it seems to be a rather disjointed, dangerous world that Kino travels in, and being seen as a boy will leave her less open to people confronting her (or at least give them less reason to) So, it's more true-to-life that Kino would wear many layers in order to hide her feminity.
As for personally, I PREFER the anime kino to the more curvy artbook kino. She's a good standard to all us IBTC (Itty-Bitty-Titty-Committee) members ;) Gives us a strong role model in the media who isn't overly "endowed" ;)

I'm TRYING my hardest to learn japanese, and it's REALLY hard! Especailly since it's a whole differnt language family than English is! I wish there was a way to just listen to some tapes while you sleep and wake up and know another language, or a fish you could put in your ear like in "Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy". Does anyone know the title of the background music that was used in ep one where Kino was riding Hermes out of the music? ACK! I have it stuck in my head! :upset:
I completely forgot about this, but for whoever likes collecting scans here is a large scan from February Newtype for the movie. It's illustrated by Kuroboshi Kouhaku.

The animation production is SHAFT rather than A.P.P.P., hm. There isn't much new or interesting info in it.

yes, soon.
Do you have any sort of source for this? DVD release dates (If there will even be a DVD) haven't even been announced yet. So unless there's a camrip floating arround somewhere, or another source, fansubbers don't have any raws to work with yet. So it could be a while. On the bright side, the odds of us seeing a license for this movie eventually are fairly good so even if no fansubbers touch it we'll get an official version eventually.

Well, it's finally here, out on a fansub near you.
Description borrowed from Anime-Planet:
The travels of Kino and Hermes take them through a desolate landscape, where they come across a domed city whose inhabitants seem obsessed with personal hygiene. After submitting to a lengthy cleaning process, Kino is admitted to the country where she enjoys a pleasant stay in luxurious surroundings, and befriends a girl suffering from sickness who dreams of the world outside. However, not all is as it seems...

Hmm. Kino no Tabi is one of my favorite shows, but this OVA didn't seem to stand up to the rest, though I'm not sure I can say just why. The twist was obvious, the sudden widespread CG was jarring and out of place, and it just didn't meet the feel and tone of the rest of the show.
Not to say it's terrible--but KnT is a 9+/10 overall, and I'd say this OVA is a 7/10.

I have to agree with zoot about the cg - it was a bit crap, I thought.
The point where Kino found the ruined settlement before she found the city was foreshadowing the end. But while I guessed Rogue had to be dead, I didn't guess the experimentation aspect.
This just reminded me how much I love Kino no Tabi. I was put off the first series for ages by ADV's trailers which gave completely the wrong impression, but once I watched it I loved it. I've also read Tokyopop's translation of the first light novel. I don't know how much original material there is, but if there' s enough I'd love to see a proper second series.
Honestly, I didn't like it at all.
The character designs were a major turn for the worse. I popped in a DVD for comparison, and the old ones were a lot more distinctive. The character designs of the new movie pretty generic. This is a minor gripe compared to the others.
I didn't like the plot, at all:
It neither answered nor explored any of the potential of the isolated city. How many diseased people did we see? One? That can't be the reason why the city is cut off from the rest of the world, and the movie explore this aspect in the slightest.
The human experimentation project was the closest that it came to answering the reason for it, but that still doesn't make any sense. Any city of that size could find volunteers, right?
A consequence of the human experimentation project is that it also destroys any foundation for the city to exist at all: there isn't enough room or natural sunlight to grow food inside, and if their agriculture isn't produced by those people, where's it coming from? The small plot of farmland Kino found at the beginning looked long abandoned.
So do they normally kidnap travelers for the project or not? The guard at the end just seemed to go psycho, rather than execute any kind of capturing procedure.
Finally, parts of it felt like another moe series. This just doesn't fit Kino's journey.
I'd give it a 4/10.

I actually just watched the movie 2 and I think I need more detail about this~~
someone who has read the novel outthere about this, tell me the detail~~ the ending feels weird and cut off.
it is still good, but I think I should give 6 to 7/10
If only there was a direct or non-torrent way to watch it. No home net access and I love this series. Will always remain one of my favorites. The moe parts...um..makes it easier for non-fans to get into the series. Perverts.

Watched it just now. 'Twas awsome.
I loved the tension in the scene when Kino decided not to get involved. Then Kino said, in response to Hermes' question, "A place where everybody is truly happy". 'Twas subtle. Reminded me of why I liked Kino as a character.
Sorry you guys didn't like it. 9/10. Better than a fair proportion of what came before, I'd say.
