Thanks for the informative insights all!
But I think it's sooooo ridiculous the U.S. doesn't have a cream of the cream internet infrastructure that Asia has and which our telecoms are always clucking about us having! Maybe there's a niche here for a Jap firm to step up to the plate and offer their services here!
But all this talk about the mysterious forbidden 2chan is like waving a whipped creme jelly donut in front of a child, and I just find myself tempted to take a peek to sate my curiousity! I wonder how different their LS sites are from ours, and as for their fanfiction I'm sure there're some golden nuggets in the crazy garbage too, but until there's a good online lang translator to pipe those sites thru I guess that's a dream for now! Still, aren't there any "safe zones" in 2chan you can recommend where I can get a taste that won't ruin my eyes? :)
Thanks!

2ch is mysterious and forbidden? Since when?
Also, for the future - "Jap" is a derogatory term, and shouldn't really be used in casual conversation when referring to Japanese people.
Ditto.... "jap" still generates *extremely* derogatory feelings .... almost everyone of my family's japanese side would have your face in the concrete if you used it, young or old. It evokes the time of internment camps, theft of family assets, and hatred. It's the same as using any racially derogatory word - the effect is to dehumanize, making it easier to abuse or mistreat someone.
It doesn't take that long to type "japanese" but in an extreme hurry - I'll tell people that the Microsoft abbreviation of "JP" is passable shorthand.
2ch is neither mysterious nor forbidden...it's just not made for Westerners and would take extra labor for outsiders to understand.
By the way, "Jap" = "Chink" = our own names for you guys, which we try not to use to avoid problems.

Well God forbid anyone should ever make fun of us dorks. :P Konata seems like a lovable, fairly intelligent character. At least they over in Japan aren't represented by a flake like Patty. Personally though, I chose not to be offended by Patty, since there is a lot of truth to the stereotype she portrays and she's pretty likable in her own right.
Konata's also fairly glorified, and is only ever shown in a bad light when she's getting chewed out by Kagami. In fact, I've found her behavior to be far less offensive than a lot of what I've heard of other Japanese otaku. Case in point. You'd think that to be a mangaka, or to work in an animation studio, you'd have to have a certain level of otaku about you anyway. It kinda seems like they chose to interpret it as being mocked.
But yeah, seek help plz. It's interesting to know that they have better care for mental illnesses over there. What exactly is their view on mental illness, that it would keep them from seeking treatment or recognizing it?
Konata as a character is mostly meant to portray Otaku in an ultra positive and flattering light and to feed into their imagination of an ideal girlfriend. One who thinks like them, shares the same interests and represents some of their most beloved fetishes. She's pure fantasy through and through.

Probably. No girls that perfect. Haha. She is just adorable too though. I would want a girlfriends like that so Kyoto Animation have fulfilled their purpose. A girl that you could sit down and play Dead or Alive with, watch anime with, she is extremely cute at the same time, AND has blue hair!
But to be honest I would much prefer Tsukasa. She is the best for me and has features that I look for and adore in females. Short hair, small chest, just plain cute, big eyes, clumsy, sweet, ...the ribbon....AAGH! I hope girls like her atleast exist!
Nontheless I am sure their are some awesome otaku females out there. ^_^

I have to agree here (and I'm guessing that my fellow Boulder-ite didn't mean anything racist by it, although people in this city are usually over-the-top PC, so it was unusual to see a word like that from someone who lives here)... It's the same all around for all the racial epithets. They mean things to different people and generations. Like "WOP". For me it doesn't mean hardly anything because I'm third generation Italian-American and I didn't live in New York during the 40's where racism against (and between) the Irish and Italians was rampant. My dad, though... He'd also plant faces in pavement if you said that to him...
True, words only have the meaning we give them, and I think saying a racial word in ignorance is to be forgiven (after a polite reminder of how the word IS a racial slur), but to knowingly use a racist word, even without the venom behind it is disrespectful, IMHO. I really am amused when someone says "no disrespect to XXX, but <disrespectful language here>" or "not to be racist but <racist words here>". It's like they are actively acknowledging that they are about to be racist, but try to fool us into believing they're not? Heh.
Anyways - On topic... :)
I really love this series exactly because of that self-deprecating humor. Kona-chan's Asperger's-esque "social etiquette" (or lack thereof, which is not too uncommon in the geek/nerd/otaku community), Kagami's exasperation with said "etiquette" (which I see quite often with my friend's SOs when we used to talk about World of Warcraft all the time), and the over-the-top obviously unrealistic moe and Kona-chan's real-time comments on how life isn't at all like manga/anime is all just too poignantly true yet too tongue in cheek to think that it's meant to be insulting . But, yeah I can see how some people who take themselves way too seriously can be pretty put off by the show.
I also love the show because it's a nice intro into some parts of everyday Japanese life and watching how different the Japanese vs. American lifestyle is really informative (and seeing the not-insignificant similarities is very cool as well :)). To all the people that posted on the "references" thread, you ROCK! To someone who's seen a few anime and knows just a little about Japanese culture, getting those guides and walkthroughs to all the references was awesome (AVPlaya gets the gold medal for the tome o' knowledge in those posts! :D). I feel like I learned as much about Japanese culture watching this show and reading the forums as I did in my classes and reading books!
BTW - What's the deal with the word "gaijin". I know it is sometimes used in a derogatory fashion but it also seems to be a self-deprecating "badge of honor" among some people too (kinda like "otaku" or "nerd", etc.). Am I understanding the situation correctly? Is using it in a self-deprecating way an advisable practice?

Using a racist word in ignorance should be pointed out and corrected by those who aren't ignorant, or else no lessons will be learned and someone's face will wind up in the pavement.

That is SO TRUE, and I see it all the time on the internet. It's like saying that you don't mean to be racist right before acting like a racist jerkbag makes everything a-ok. e_e Reality, people.
On topic, you're really passionate about the show! That's cool. I love it for all the same reasons. I've also learned a lot about daily Japanese life and culture from researching things I've seen in this show. In some cases like you said, more than I did in school.
I can't help you with the whole gaijin thing, but I usually prefer not to use self-deprecating terms. If the terms were meant to insult me, I'd rather not humor them. I've seen gaijin used in humorous ways by Westerners (ie GAIJIN SMASH!), but I don't think I'd use it on myself if I traveled. Likewise I wouldn't use the word f*g to describe myself, despite being of deviant sexuality...

Heh, this should be required viewing in class, I say! Distribute that wonderful stickied thread with all the references along with the raw episode to the students and assign it as homework. That'd be the fun way to learn a new language/culture, lol!
As an aside, I've actually really gotten passionate about a lot of anime series within the past couple of years. I only watched shows here and there in and after college, but recently I've just been completely drawn in. I have to admit that anime was a big part of why I started learning Japanese and really becoming interested in general Japanese history/culture a couple years back :heh:. I guess it's because the stories are so well done and the characters so well thought out, and the little details are always so down pat (L*S being a great example). That and the overabundance of cuteness (which I'm a sucker for, I'll admit). :D
Likewise I wouldn't use the word f*g to describe myself, despite being of deviant sexuality...
I wouldn't even go far to say other sexual preferences are "deviant." To me, there's nothing abnormal about people's sexual and/or relationship interests as long as both partners are cognizant of their decision and in agreement. I do love this country, but there are definitely things about this country's culture and society that I dislike a great deal and the big Hoorah about who people can and can't have relationships with is one of them. Heh, I've noticed those who are the most outspoken and intolerant are often the ones trying hardest to convince themselves of something...
On that note, how are bisexuality and homosexuality treated in Japan? I've heard that it used to be considered completely within norms, especially for the warrior classes but that Westernization and the slow (albeit small) rise of western religions affected that to some extent. I wonder what the current culture's views are on this topic (or are we getting too off topic with that? :p).

Unfortunately, anime fans like us are the only ones who'd really show enthusiasm for something like that...lol.

I've been watching anime almost constantly since the end of high school. I was introduced to the slice of life/high school life genre by Azumanga Daioh, and Lucky*Star took it to a new personal level of awesome for me. It is currently my favorite anime. I am also a sucker for cute things ::sigh::, and I like tv shows that are very character-centric, so these kinds of shows really appeal to me. Lucky*Star's constant references and overflowing geekiness are what set it aside for me...that and the interaction between Konata and Kagami.
I agree with your notes on this country's view of homosexuality. While my tastes might be considered "deviant", I live a totally normal life with my partner that consists of none of the oddities often stereotyped.

I've heard that it used to be considered completely within norms, especially for the warrior classes but that Westernization and the slow (albeit small) rise of western religions affected that to some extent. I wonder what the current culture's views are on this topic (or are we getting too off topic with that? :p).
We're still doing some fair talk on Lucky*Star, so I hope this isn't too off topic. From what I understand, love between two men was accepted and even seen as superior to man/woman back in the old days, but Western influence has since cast a negative light on it. I don't know what their attitudes were towards female/female, but those of us on that side of the spectrum are often ignored anyway. Although their media appears friendly to homosexuality and will even portray it in a positive light (even with a few of the Lucky*Star girls :D), it doesn't really reflect the country's general attitude towards it. Gay marriage is illegal in Japan, and a recent poll I looked at showed that the majority of the population disapproved of it. So they still have some things to fix. At least it's not a sin punishable by death like it still is in some countries...

It seems to enjoy a very unique status. People definitely try not to say that in public anymore, but I'm willing to bet they still do in private, where parents might let it slip in family conversations. It's so ingrained with the language but it's not offensive enough to get blasted too hard for saying it (absolutely not like saying the n-word makes you flinch), so people still use it.
I probably shouldn't bring China into this, but in Cantonese we like to call westerners "gweilo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gweilo)". Charitably, we're playfully calling you "ghosts" in reference to your skin color, but with the proper spin it could have meant "foreign devil." And we throw that around like it's a badge of honor for you guys. My parents almost always end up using it, and I admit I sometimes do, too.

Had for years...? Lucky Star hasn't existed for years.
Well... the phrase "lucky star" predates the anime series by a long time. In fact, I still get Madonna hits at top rather than the anime when I google on the words.
I noticed something today when watching Lucky Star. During the opening, it shows the four girls from the waist down standing around talking:
http://www.nischan.com/crap/skirts1.jpg
Their skirt bottoms are all pretty much even. However, Konata is a bit shorter than the others. Shouldn't hers be lower? My girlfriend said no, because they design them to be even. Even though I should take a woman's opinion on the topic of skirts, lol, that doesn't make sense to me. So what if a girl is -really- short, if they design them to always be even does that mean she won't be able to bend over w/o flashing everyone? Hehe.
The cheerleader part further along in the intro looks more like what I'd expect:
http://www.nischan.com/crap/skirts2.jpg
Granted, they're not really standing normally in that scene so ya have to take it with a grain of salt, but even so it's significantly lower there. So.. do they really line up IRL or is the first part just an artist gaffe?
(Yea, I'm that bored lol)

Perspective
I've just destroyed your boredom with the power of a single word...
"In vein!"
:p
I don't think it was on purpose maybe an error in drawing ? I don't think he measured the hieght with a rule when drawing them he just did.
MidnightViper88
2008-09-13, 23:32
On top of perspective, it's just an article of clothing...I don't know if there's any significance in differing lengths, other than personal preference, so I also think the artist didn't make any errors, just did it like that so everything wouldn't look exactly the same, or did it on purpose to make a certain character stand out...
Who knows...Reminds me I could use a pair myself...
Well, I certainly hope it isn't in vein, that sounds painful lol. Foreshortening perspective would certainly explain variance between the front row and the back row in the second pic, but the first one it's fairly obvious they are meant to be standing close together so that doesn't really apply there.
Regarding difference in lengths, it's a school uniform so I'd assume it's a standardized article of clothing. If they are all uniform (yuk-yuk) in length, Konata's should be drawn lower in the group shot as her hips would obviously be lower to the ground since she's shorter.
-yawn- Ahh me and my darned OCD :)
I imagine that this will end up in the silly questions thread or the Lucky Star generic discussion thread, but to answer the question...
Here are the more rational explanations. :)
http://www.raki-suta.com/img/res/446.html
This topic reminds me of that episode from Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei where they discuss the fact that people tend to pay more attention to the weird side details than the main idea of things. :heh:

The artist got lazy. It like me when I draw a few frills or ruffles, and I know i need to make them artistic, but I do the simply way cause it saves me time.
ps: Plus Lucky Star character designs are confusing. On some parts of the anime, they look very young and much shorter but you can still tell the heigth difference, then you got some that makes them look like the current Clamp style, umm... what was that style called... Match Stick or something like that. What ever, really slim body.
One thinks they forgot...and corrected in show as a later date, but never the opening. (or Konata is standing on a box).

Yea,usually they look young and you can't tell their size. But in part's like the cheerleading part of the opening, they look...Odd. In the beginning part's of the opening they look just fine, but cheerleader outfits on them and they look taller..And creepily slimer sometimes. That's happened a few times in the series..i wonder why LS is a sitcom in their world,so...How can the height difference be?

My girlfriend said no, because they design them to be even. Even though I should take a woman's opinion on the topic of skirts, lol, that doesn't make sense to me.
Perhaps she meant that they design skirts to come down to about the same part of the leg even if the leg lengths are a bit different. In the picture, Kona-chan's legs seem to be about the same height as the others, but in the rest of the animation of course, her legs are quite a bit shorter. So, I'm voting that the drawing in the intro was just not scaled correctly.
Edit: Or she was being lifted by a crane, as in the images on that linked site :)

I honestly think it's just a mistake. For some reason, that shot always made everyone seem in more realistic proportions to me. Not that that should make Konata magically taller than the others, but you know what I mean.
I like the box idea though.

Just wondering ... has the author for the manga given any indication as to what will happen to Konata's generation when they finally graduate from high school? Will the manga continue following them into their college (if they even attend) days, or will they simply be phased out/moved out of the limelight?

NO. It's a complete mystery.
Back when the show was airing, one of the thoughts was that the sequence itself was done in an entirely different artstyle (more eroge realism). There was never any really good answer for Konata's apparent equalization in height (even allowing for perspective).
I think the swlrling ahoge-copter is the most-apt solution.

I know exactly how he feels.... well at least in terms of height. Sometimes I think my Purpose In Life is to reach things up high that these little asian women need.
In exchange, I get to bask in their presence...
One of my favorite scenes in the whole series is early when Miyuki, Kagami, and Konata are talking about Miyuki's moe and glasses...
all you can see is Konata's ahoge sticking up into camera view while Kagami and Miyuki are "properly in camera shot".

Well... the phrase "lucky star" predates the anime series by a long time. In fact, I still get Madonna hits at top rather than the anime when I google on the words.
In addition, there is another song called Lucky Star by Nightcore. Since the first time I heard is was today, I think it's new but I have not found an exact date for the song. My handle is Lucky Star on the Wotch forum which I have had since Oct. 26, 2005. It was a combination of my last name being Lucky, the song by Madonna, and wishful thinking.
As well as Dragon Con, I attended Anime Weekend Atlanta 14 this month. It was good to see some familiar faces like Birdy (Birdy the Mighty Decode), Sakura (The Tsubasa Chronicles), and Lina Inverse (Slayers Revolution). I also got to hear the first two Episodes of Lucky Star in English. The food jokes made better sense than they did before but, if it were up to me, I would still not start a series out that way.
One of my favorite scenes in the whole series is early when Miyuki, Kagami, and Konata are talking about Miyuki's moe and glasses...
When Miyuki is around that is all Konata seems to want to discuss; Moe elements. Miyuki is adorable though, and I do somewhat always compare her to Mikuru from Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu, except Miyuki seems a lot more intellecual. But they do seem alike in the sense that they are both cute loli's faces with huge breasts.
Also Miyuki is in her own element. Mikuru is a fish out of water (or time) so she's still adjusting to her location. Haruhi doesn't help much on that count..but then Haruhi doesn't know.
Yup. Miyuki and Mikuru are the greatest moeblobs ever to walk the face of the earth.
I don't know about you guys, but ever since that trippy pet-shop sequence in the OVA, I've been compelled to refer to Miyuki's hair only as "fur," the way Tsukasa did. It was so simple and irrelevant, and yet I rofl'd so hard. "Right now she's the songstress of the milky way" was a stroke of pure WTF-genius.

Can anyone out there possibly translate the newer Lucky Star drama CD? I really want to listen to it and I know I'm not the only one.
I remember that it was a bunch of animesuki users who posted the translations for many of the awesome Mai HiME drama tracks... so I was wondering if anyone here could lend their skills. Sorry if I'm being obnoxious by asking.

Hmmm, my reference to that scene was about how the camera is set to give us good views of Kagami and Miyuki --- but Kona's ahoge is all we see of her. It wasn't about Miyuki in particular or the dialog.

Cancelled (http://picasaweb.google.com/shirobane/LuckyStarDVD6LE)? *whistles*
Hmmm, I'm semi-annoyed. Though I have to say some of the LE editions were "meh". A lot of my son's girlfriends ended up with Lucky*Star nightshirts (those damned XXL sizes :P).
My question is will regular edition volume 6 match the crayola drawing jacket or the regular edition jacket?
This growing trend in manga and anime of dropping a series part way through is *really* self-defeating. People who are trying to support the industry will stop making the investment at all.

I have to agree with that. Though I didn't invest in the LE, I've had some book series that I would have gladly bought multiple copies of in order to keep them afloat cancelled on me, and it's left me feeling more frustrated and pissed than encouraged to spend more.

I demand Cha-la-Head-Cha-la live! :D
I got them translated and uploaded on my Youtube channel. It's based on a Chinese script I managed to get my hands on.
Hi there, long time reader, first time poster here.
Very nice job on the drama tracks! You don't have it in written form though, do you? I don't have access to a computer all the time, and I'd love to pop in my cd and read the script along with it. I wanted to ask on here before as well, but I wasn't sure how to go about it.
P.S. If anyone has the scripts for the first Drama CD it would also be greatly appreciated.
P.P.S. Man, I would love love love to go to that concert.

Okay, am I the only one who can NOT find Lucky Star #6 on DVD in stores anywhere?? It was supposed to be released on March 17th, right? I've been to 3-4 different retailers now, and none of them have it. None of them know when/if it's coming.
To have an unannounced, indefinite delay in release on the last disc in the series does not a happy buyer make, Bandai. I am one disgruntled fan.

I've never bought anime at a brick-and-mortar store, but I see that Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Lucky-Star-Vol-6/dp/B001OBBRBK/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1237513531&sr=8-2) and B&N (http://video.barnesandnoble.com/DVD/Lucky-Star-6/e/669198803000/?itm=1) seem to have it in stock, but it's on order at RightStuf (http://www.rightstuf.com/cgi-bin/catalogmgr/0vsEo9RXXgGyXva5-T/browse/item/82497/4/0/0). Perhaps they had some sort of fulfillment problem, but it looks like it is actually shipping to some people...

FYE.com has them in stock online. The site doesn't have the "check store" feature, but it's in stock and has the release date of the 17th there.

There are a couple of anime stores where I live, and I was trying to be loyal to my most local one... they've kept me waiting all week with no explanation as to why they haven't gotten it in. Meanwhile the other anime store sold out yesterday when I neglected to check. I'm really pissed that I've been taken for a ride like this. I'll probably just order it online at this point.
errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, don't want to ruin your day but rightstuf.com just shipped my vol. 6 and it is enroute. Everyone seems to have it in stock or are offering as if.
Yeah, I gave up on brick'n'mortar for virtually all my DVD and gaming purchases years ago. b&m stores can't blame me for ruining their business when they didn't offer me service in the first place :P

My day's not ruined, I went out to the farther store (they were RE-stocking it while my local one STILL hasn't gotten it) and I've already watched it.
Exactly, I would love to support these stores... especially in times like these. But when I walk in and say "I want Lucky Star" and I get "Well we have Gundam SEED", well...

I really want the box sets...Plus all the books, but I go to borders all the time and I haven't seen any T_T
Order the series online: rightstuf.com, dvdpacific.com, etc. Really.. the brick'n'mortar stores fail miserably at servicing anime fans.
If you wait a bit - they MAY re-release them in thinpack-total set. But I haven't seen much of that sort of thing lately in these sucky economic times.

A man has been arrested for plotting to bomb the house of the characters of Lucky Star, formerly the home of the manga’s creator Kagami Yoshimizu, but was apprehended by police before causing any harm.
Saitama police arrested the unemployed man (22) in Satte City after he sent a letter proclaiming:
“I’m going to go and blow up the building with the recreated Lucky Star heroine’s room in it.”
Referring to the pictured building, formerly the mangaka’s residence and now a tourist trap. The management beefed up security as a result.
He was soon arrested for interfering with police duties, all apparently according to plan, for the culprit himself states he did it out of consideration of the possibility that “If there’s a big fuss about the thing, I’ll be on the news…”
He goes on to admit himself that he had no intention of carrying out his plot: “I had no intention of actually blowing it up, I just thought if I put out the threats it would cause a stir.” Police seem to concur.
Hatred for Konata or Kagami did not apparently enter into the equation, as he had apparently only heard about the title through the Internet, and had never so much as read a volume of the manga. There is speculation that he objected to the franchise all the same though…
Regarding the house itself, the Satte City Chamber of Commerce and Industry had earlier renovated the house after Yoshimizu had moved out of it last May.
Opened on March 28th, The “Kimagure Studio Yoshimizu Kagami Gallery Satte” is now made into a museum of sorts, celebrating the “birth place” of Lucky Star.
Most of the rooms were made to look like those of the Izumi household, with one depicting the room of the main character, Konata Izumi, while another was made to look like that of her cousin, Yutaka.

Whoa, I have not heard of any of this about the house. I do remember calling that a staff member (mangaka, close enough) lived in it, otherwise it'd be a real pain to take some innocent guy's house and make it an icon.

Miyuki can't find her glasses, Konata says something about the games she's been playing. That's all I know.
So does anyone know exactly -when- in May the manga is supposed to be released over here in the US? I've looked everywhere for a specific date. Not even the bookstores know.

Just regular chatter then huh? It always kinda bugged me that they never felt the need to translate it, even if it wasn't really a part of the intro song.
Anyway for the manga I've only seen the 15th and the 31st as the possible dates. Most of the online retailers have it listed as the 15th, but rightstuf has the one and only 31st I've seen. I trust rightstuf more than the others, but then again I got my Haruhi novel a couple of weeks before they even had it listed as coming out -_-;
A couple of the fansub groups took a stab at translating that part but really is just a bit of girl-babble-chat.

In other news, Japanator has nominated Tsukasa as one of three characters likely to snap and go yandere on us. The other's are Mikuru Asahina and K-On's Mio. What do YOU think about that possibility? (It's always the quiet ones, and she does get pushed around a lot while not losing her cool.) Log in and cast your vote.

Nah Tsukasa would be the least likely to snap in my opinion. Ayano on the other hand....You've got a point there. She did snap once already, didn't she? At least I vaguely remember someone talk about it in the anime. Misao, I think? Or was it something from a random fanfic I read someplace else?
And Tsukasa being a yandere; the mere thought makes me laugh. Dunno why there are so many fanarts with her being one.

Actually, a lot of fanart have Tsukasa and Mikuru both as yandere, either they're both heavily into it to begin with or one influenced the other. Either way, they both end up massively humiliating or killing Konata, and sometimes Kagami. Looking at them is both painful and hilarious.
Maybe it's because they're both so one-dimensional, and they don't retaliate against Konata's madness, not even when she targets them. You would think that any normal person would hold a grudge to being associated with an otaku to begin with.

I noticed something... after a little research, the same voice actor for Konata the English Dub of lucky star and in Haruhi, Wendee Lee, is also the voice of blackrose in the .hack series and in the Megaman Star Force anime...
I've been noticing it in other places too... she seems big in english dubs

That would be mostly cause the people that do these dubs, tend not to use more than a handful of people for every show the do. So voices get repedative pretty quickly.

It seems as if the Lucky Star imageboard has gone down so hard it doesn't even properly show up in Google search anymore. What gives?

The english voice actor pool is incredibly tiny... you'll see the same handful of actors on almost every R1 dub no matter which distributor is involved.
The subtitles are pretty decent in Lucky*Star... but they suffer from the limitations of the DVD subtitle format system. It simply won't be as creative or pretty as fansubbers can be with video files and aegisub. It isn't unusual for me to keep using a fansub after I've purchased the DVDs... and in one case, I stripped the DVD video and japanese audio out and put in my favorite subtitles with my tweaks for personal use because of significant changes from the broadcast series to the DVD series.

It's almost like you can place Japan itself between each area... :heh:
