View Full Version : Minagoroshi / Matsuribayashi Translation Projects
I know several have PMed me for having a place to put up announcements of their translation projects for the parts that the anime will not cover. If you have them, feel free to utilize this thread for your notices and the like.
HOWEVER, PLEASE REFRAIN FROM ANY ACTIVITY THAT HINDERS PEOPLE FROM BUYING THE ORIGINAL GAME! Seeing such comments such as "I don't feel like playing the game because I'm too lazy" or "Can someone post the game on a torrent, I don't wanna buy it," etc. etc (http://hinano.animeblogger.net/2006/09/26/higurashi-no-naku-koro-ni-26-finale/) were the main reason why I had my doubts why I should even bother giving out details for the final two chapters.

Useful info from this thread so people can avoid flipping through several pages of text and asking redundant questions (which I believe there still we be since some people just jump right into asking questions without reading the first post):
1. Make sure your system is Japanese enabled.
You can find step-by-step instructions how to enable Japanese read/write capability for English language based Windows XP here (http://home.comcast.net/~kagamix2/xp-compatible/japanese_setting.html).
2. Download the trial version of Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni game
You can do so at the official site (http://07th-expansion.net/Soft/Taiken.htm) to check and see if the game will actually run on your system or not. This is only the trial version of the actual game itself, so it will only allow you to play Onikakushi-hen (albeit in Japanese, of course).
3. BUY THE GAME
There are a two places that I know of where you can buy this game online outside of Japan. These include paletweb (http://www.paletweb.com/) and HimeyaShop (http://www.himeyashop.com/). If you find others, let me know so I can post them here.
These are the two that you only need to buy:

Higurashi no Naku Koroni Himatsubushi-hen
Comike 66 (2004.08.13)
Included chapters:
Chapter 1: Onikakushi-hen
Chapter 2: Watanagashi-hen
Chapter 3: Tatarigoroshi-hen
Chapter 4: Himatsubushi-hen

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y104/kj1980/j8.jpg
Higurashi no Naku Koroni Kai Matsuribayashi-hen
Comike 70 (2006.08.13)
Included chapters:
Chapter 5: Meakashi-hen
Chapter 6: Tsumihorobishi-hen
Chapter 7: Minagoroshi-hen
Chapter 8: Matsuribayashi-hen
paletweb link: http://www.paletweb.com/selectpage.asp?code=00572

4. Get the English patch
You can obtain the patch from zettai.makenaidesuwayo.com (http://zettai.makenaidesuwayo.com/). Instructions are clearly listed there, so read them carefully. I have no idea whether they are going to list the patches on the same page or not (it would be better if they did to avoid confusion as it comes out), but the currently available patch is for the Minagoroshi-hen prologue only. Any subsequent patches (if any) will be posted here as an update.
Unfortunately (as I have predicted it would happen), the group who was trying to translate the other chapters seemed to have dropped out. So if you want to play the four chapters from the Question arc and the first two chapters in the Answer arc in order to see what you missed from the anime...the only way to do it is to play it with a Japanese dictionary at hand. However, I have seen people who have sweated and toiled through one chapter, who end up being surprised at how much their level of Japanese proficiency has increased by the next chapter. Perhaps it is time for you to undergo that challenge...so that you won't bug me with incessant questions like "Is [sic] their an English patch lol" everytime a game-based anime comes around.
I recommend downloading the first game off the official site (http://07th-expansion.net/Soft/Taiken.htm) before buying anything. That way you make sure your computer is capable of playing it.

Yeah, it's a patch.
First of all, I noticed no one posted a link to the homepage of the translation (http://zettai.makenaidesuwayo.com/).
Also, 3 parts (chapters?) from what I assume are the beginning of Minagoroshi-hen have been released on the site:
Diary of an Investigation Part 1 (http://zettai.makenaidesuwayo.com/2006/09/20/mg-i-p1/)
Diary of an Investigation Part 2 (http://zettai.makenaidesuwayo.com/2006/09/21/mg-i-p2/)
Diary of an Investigation Part 3 (http://zettai.makenaidesuwayo.com/2006/09/22/mg-i-p3/)

By the time they get around to doing the work for patching the actual game I will probably have lost interest already.

Maybe a little off-topic, but I really have to say this: Reading parts of the translated text from the game, I realize how better the game is in comparison to the anime. My main problem with the anime is not the skipped scenes or ath, but Keichi. He's such a stupid character in the anime, because he has that awful voice that sounds like a character from a mecha anime, and not only that, but his monologues are next to non-existant in the anime.

In the game, Keiichi makes comments on almost every line of conversation. (where he's the main character)
Anyway, I am translating the game, but very, very slowly. So do people think I should translate Minagoroshi-hen myself, or download the patch?
At this rate, I'll reach Minagoroshi sometime next year... :p

If you want to become a translator, you might want to cantact the webmaster (leader) of the Minagoroshi-hen tranlation project, Ayyo.

Minagoroshi contains 30 chapters, counting the prologue/intro.
The current plan right now is to release the translation by chapter or maybe chapters. What this means is that we won’t release the whole thing at once which would mean an evil amount of wait time.
Each chapter takes on average about 30 minutes minutes to read, not counting any TIPS that may or may not follow. Some can be as short as 20 minutes and others over 40 minutes.
An anime episode takes about 24 minutes to watch.
It’s not set in stones on how fast we will release or how much we will release each time, but you can bet on it that we’re releasing by chapters and not the whole thing at once.

Shouldn't be long before we receive the first part of the patch.

True ? I didn't knew that, as I tried to stay clear of the Matsuribayashi-hen / Minagoroshi-hen topic to avoid spoiling myself. Thanks !
Ordered on Paletweb (I already bought several games on their Ebay store, great seller, and the shipping costs to Europe are much cheaper than on Himeya).

excuse me, but i don't understand quite well
Are you saying that a fansub or group of nice people is making patches in ENGLISH for the last 2 games of "kai" part??
I know it might be a stupid question but, is any other group making patches for the other games??

I don't think so. Since the anime covers the major plot points for the first six, the demand for them aren't as high. I'm glad they skipped to seven.

There was a fellow who was doing it, but I haven't seen any fruits of labor from him. I e-mailed him about being a translator, and we discussed it for a while, but I haven't heard from him in two months, so I assume he's given up.
Maybe after Minagoroshi and Matsuribayashi are finished we can go back and do the rest?
I'll be surprised if they finish Matsuribayashi. Projects like these have a nasty habit of never being finished from lack of motivation or whatever.

It's a shame since Higurashi might be one of those games that'll never see the light in western countries (for example I'm so~ praying to see the PS2 -or whatever- version in english, but it's almost unlikely), even though it has so many fans.

And you know what ? Such pessimism isn't going to help the translation whatsoever.
But anyway, I can see that you're reading Kj's thread, so I figure you have abandoned hope already.
The only driving force for my translation is knowing that some people will choose to wait over getting spoiled on forums.
Still happy I'm stubborn and dedicated though.

I don't wish to be so pessimistic, I'm just speaking what I think is most likely to happen. And knowing the answer isn't enough for me. I like knowing all the little details how everything came to be. I'm still looking forward to playing the games.

Some more info from our team, and some more teaser screens.
The crew is now sailing, and hopefully we'll be releasing things soon.
As ayyo mentioned on the blog, we'll be releasing the game chapter by chapter, to prevent the wait from being too atrocious... well there'll be waiting no matter what, but at least this'll make it less painful.
Oooooo :D Can't wait. Not that the 'release by chapter' really benefits me seen as I'm mostly an arc watcher (though I bet temptation will come knocking) and as such will likely be waiting for everything to be released anyway, but it'll nice to be able to watch the progress. Doing my best to avoid getting spoiled. Thanks for all the hard work the team's putting in with this, I get the feeling we'll actually see this one done.

In preparation of installing Matsuribayashi, I followed the guide found here (http://home.comcast.net/~kagamix2/xp-compatible/japanese_setting.html) as per the instructions on Zettai Makenai. However, it makes some things...function weird. Like I have a yen symbol instead of a back slash in explorer, and text on some web pages is funky (like smaller, and Arial instead of bigger and Times New Roman). Is there any way around this, or is this to be expected?

The yen symbol instead of backslash is normal and you'll get used to it.
The text on webpages getting 'funky' is probably your explorer changing the unicode and/or your default font settings. I don't remember that happening but you'll get used that too I suppose.
Great job for those who are trying to do Minagoroshi-hen in English.
I checked to see how it came out, and I was surprised. Although it was kind of slow for the game to start up, and some funky fast foward effects are in place, the translation itself was good.
The prologue itself is a great way to start off people on explaining what Rules X, Y, and Zs are, so I highly suggest people to start buying the game and playing it in English through this patch.
Hope you do well in your progress, ayyo.
Regards,
kj1980
Just for the record, if anyone has any problems installing it, like I did, this also works:
- Unzip the rar file into an 'English' folder in your main higurashi folder, wherever that may be.
- Run install.bat
- It'll eventually finish, now copy everything left into the English folder into your main higurashi folder so nothing's left.
- Run onscripter
:) Just finished reading it and it's reeeally interesting. Can't wait for more, I wouldn't have expected to enjoy the supernatural plot element but I'm really beginning to now. Surprise surprise.
and text on some web pages is funky (like smaller, and Arial instead of bigger and Times New Roman). Is there any way around this, or is this to be expected?
Try checking what you're web encoding is (if it's IE that's View -> Encoding -> see what it's chosen) I sometimes get strange bits (like random kanji instead of apostrophes) but changing it to some english variation normally works. And yeah, the yen sign is normal, you'll get used to it unless you want to keep switching unicode languages.
kj - Thanks.
muu, funky fast forward effects?
And for the record, Valdra's method is unsupported by us and we won't offer a walk around if the second patch and so forth conflicts with it. :(
I'll advise trying your best to make it install and work properly the approved and supported way.
I just finished reading the prologue, and... it's amazing. I want to thank Ayyo, and everyone else working on this excellent english patch, and I want to thank you all for releasing the first patch so quickly. I watched the 26th episode this morning, and finished the first patch that night. Truly awesome. I hope you guys keep up your speedy, but still quality, efforts.
I also hope that once you're done with Minagoroshi-hen/Matsuribayashi-hen, you'll go on to do the other 6 chapters. Or if that isn't possible/seemed as a waste of time, then the three new chapters in the PS2 version could be translated. Though I might be hoping for to much. ^_____^

ayyo, you have my deepest gratitude for going forward with this project. Buen viento y buena mar.
ps. For those who want to run the game on fullscreen, onscripter has a switch for that.
1. Run command prompt
2. go to Drive:\Program Files\07th_Expansion\higurasi8\English\
3. run "onscripter --fullscreen" (without the quotes)
EDIT: *phew* I finally read the prologue. Awesome stuff.
hey ayyo, I was reading the prologue, and read something that may or may not be wrong:
When 'Rika' is telling you about the outcome of Onikakushi, she says that Keiichi killed Ryuguu Rena and Sonozaki Shion. Is that a fact or was it a mistake?
Or is it that she was talking about Shion as Mion? Should I just stick to call both of them as Shmion and be done with it? :P
Wow, the prologue was a lot longer than I thought it'd be. I can't wait for the next update. Words can't express how grateful I am.

EDIT: And about the Shion, that was just a mistake on the translators part, from the comments on the main translation blog page.
Thank yoy, thank you, thank you! By you I mean everyone involved in this translation project and also Valdra for the alternative installation method. The prologue was just what I needed to convince me I should not read the answered questions thread, despite the great temptation to do so.

A fair warning to people waiting for the translation : don't read the Minagoroshi TIPS in the TIPS thread, since they do spoil a fair amount about Minagoroshi itself. The tips will appear in the game progressively.
I was thinking about that. He could skip the translations on the TIPS and poems to speed up the releases. There's no need to retranslate/retype them if they're already posted here. Don't get me wrong, I would prefer them to be in the game but if it helps speed up the progress, I'm all for it.

Will it somehow hurt playing Minagoroshi if I change my Unicode back and forth from Japanese to English? I just found out that certain alt+numbers combinations don't work with the unicode in Japanese, so I'd prefer to keep it in English except when I want to play Japanese games (which won't be that often). If I keep changing it back and forth, will that in any way affect my game? Will it be alright as long as the unicode is in Japanese when I play?

So yeah I will just probably order this over the summer, there's no way I can excuse paying money for a leisurely time commitment when I'll be having a ton of work pile up until then. =\ this is just my vent as you can see. Higurashi wins out of awesomeness in every universe, anyway.

I overwrote them, the poem image came out in Japanese though, but you can get the poems on this forum here. So basically for the main text, either overwriting or not overwriting works.
I dunno, the poem didn't work for me even though I didn't overwrite. Was it supposed to?
If so, I might uninstall the game and start again from scratch with the second patch, and attempt to get the official method to work. Last time, it just came up with an error when I tried to run onscripter.exe, until I moved it into the main higurashi8 file.
Useful info added to the first post so people can refer to them without asking redundant questions.

Putting the translated images into a "bmp\efe" folder (you might have to create both folders...) should cause the game to load the translated poem. ONscripter loads from directories first, and the archive second...
(I'm not guarenteeing anything yet, though, until I recheck how it's done on my computer when I get back home...)
Just to let everyone know, a forum for the Minagoroshi-hen translation is up, The Hinamizawa Club (http://zettai.makenaidesuwayo.com/club/index.php)

Doesn't work for me either and the file is in the bmp\efe folder. It's called si_mina.jpg
I double checked everything, and that's how I have it, and it loads the translated images without using the install.bat file... Do the other two images work or no? what version of the game are you using? and are non-unicode programs set to japanese?

Seems it'll only work if onscripter.exe is being ran inside the English folder. Previously I couldn't get it to work there but when I saved arc.nsa there, it works.

I decided to be patient, buckle down and get the game.
But for future patches, are we supposed to apply them to what we already patched, to a "Fresh" version of the game, or will there be patch versions for both?

Is that bmp folder inside your English folder? if you put arc.nsa and the bmp folder in the same folder as onscripter.exe, it should work... otherwise, just ignore my advice then...

I guess the answer is no...
That is, if you read the TIPS thread and the episodes threads
In the TIPs thread there is some important stuff, that are not TIPs, but were gently translated for us. The same for some episode threads...

Just in case anybody doesn't already know, here are some keys that can be used for ONScripter-based games (such as the English patched version of Higurashi):
Text Speed:
1: slow
2: normal
3: fast
0: toggle slow/normal/fast
Scrolling:
H/left: move up one option
L/right: move down one option
K/up: go back one page
J/down: go forward one page
Misc:
F: toggle full screen / windowed mode
O: toggle: normal / display each page of text instantly
S: fast forward toggle
CTRL: fast forward while held down
ESC/right-click: display in-game menu
obviously left-click/space/return/enter to advance the text (or to select a highlighted option)
If there are any I missed, let me know.

I guess by now more than a few are aware that http://makenaidesuwayo.com/ is now gone and a reply on the Hinamizawa Club forum seems to say "and everything else is going to." Nobody's really acknowledged what this means for the Minagoroshi translation, though the question has been asked lots of times via blog comments and a time or two on the HC forum.
So my question is does anybody involved with the project or not know whether it's continuing or not? cpl_crud of WinD mentioned something about creating a forum on their forum for the project but I'm not really sure if that means it's continuing or not.
I'm not looking at this as "somebody owes me something" just because I bought the game or whatever. That's on me. I just think if you're gonna drop such a huge project like that or if you're going to leave the net or whatever, giving those who were interested in the project a head's up on what's going to happen to it might have been a decent thing to do.

I'm not involved with the project, but everything points to it continuing. Ayyo stopped working on the project after the release of the first chapter "due to personal work, life, and issues" and it's continued without him from thereon. The only thing that'll be affected is the webspace the project is currently on, which is why crud said he'd make a forum on the WinD site to discuss it. There's been no sign that the rest of the team currently working on translating Minagoroshi have any sign of stopping, so for now you needn't worry.

Ok, it might be a long shot to post in an old sticky for information, but it seems like the most relevant place to ask.
I can't get the installer to work on the games. I don't have east asian languages (or whatever it is that I need) so all the text is gibberish and question marks, and when I fumble through that, the game starts to load, but no progress is ever made. I guess I need those east asian languages after all. The problem is, they're not on my computer already, and when I try to install them, it says I need a windows CD. I don't have this CD, I never had it to begin with.
My copy of windows is authenticated, according to Microsoft, but none of their downloads on their page work for me, they all show up as broken links. Even then, I don't exactly what the file that I need is specifically called. This also prevents me from Googling it. I could sort through countless unrelated information for days before I found what I needed, downloading random crap that i don't even need or know what it is.
It's all been quite frustrating. Long story short though: Does anyone of a place where I can download Japanese language for use with AppLocale or the regular installer?
Supergrunch

So.. If anyone knows of a link to a direct download, that would save me a lot of time, but other than that, I'm covered. Unless the peer disconnects... or runs out of progress, or any number of other things go wrong. Heh.

Install the asian fonts on control panel

Well, nothing in life is ever simple, especially when you don't know jack about computers are trying to install a game entirely in Japanese..
Ok, I got the east asian language files from the torrent. I even managed to figure out that I needed to request their installation, and then redirect the path to the file I downloaded. I believe that I have done this correctly. Japanese appears in the list of availible languages, and there's a little icon in my task bar that has a english/japanese switch on it.
However, it's still not letting me install the game! The language that appears in the installer has different symbols in it, but it's not Japanese. Do I need to fiddle around with the non-unicode stuff in regional language options? Japanese is checked amongst the languages there. I have other languages checked there too, do I need to uncheck those?
Maybe this problem could be solved with AppLocale, but I can't even download that! I got to microsoft's site and now I can't get windows verified. It asks for the little windows security bar on the top, which appears only when inconvienient, and not when I need it. (Today being the first time I EVER needed it.) I don't know how to get the bar to pop up, and when I go the alternate method of verifing windows, the link is broken.
So, I'm stuck again. I really suck with computers. And amongst my friends, I'M the one who knows the most!
Sigh...

I'm a bit late with this reply, but that's because your advice worked! I finally got to play it! And wow, it was definately well worth the effort! Very good writing! Also, I'm glad I watched the anime first. The anime does a very good job of making Higurashi into a horror story. It grips you, and it moves fast. The game, however, is very much beyond a simple horror story. So much more deep and meaningful, with extremely good character development. I already knew it was going to be good because of the TIPS and other writeups here on the forums, but the game exceeded even my loftiest of expecations.
Ahh.. if only I could read Japanese.. I really have to buckle down and learn the language, but it's pretty hard to make yourself put that much work into a hobby.
Well, I have to thank that other forum for helping me, then I'm off the Hinamizawa club site to see how far along in the translation they are.

This advice, actually. I had missed one of the unicode options. But it was still a collaborative effort from the boards that I asked for help. This one and the Touhouwiki image board, believe it or not.
After coming back from the Hinamizawa club site, I'm a bit disapointed though. I turns out that I'm competely up to date on the game and manga translations. Now I have little choice but to learn Japanese, since all the translation projects seem to have come to a standstill.

Ok, so I have decided to download this game and play the missing chapters. However, the first post made by KJI1980 stated that the translators have left the job.
This brought me to think that I would not be able to get it, as I don't think I would have the time to translate written to speach to speach then back to written.
Though, scrolling down the page, scanning people's posts, I saw that people were going to attempt to trnslate the missing portions, if not redo the entire job.
My question is. Did anyone finish the translation 100%?
Thank you.

Though, scrolling down the page, scanning people's posts, I saw that people were going to attempt to trnslate the missing portions, if not redo the entire job.
My question is. Did anyone finish the translation 100%?
Thank you.
Onikakushi has 15 days and they've released up to day 5 so far.

To be a bit more clear, all indications are that the Minagoroshi/Matsuribayashi translation projects which this topic was originally about are permanently stalled (since the website has been down for months, the translator has been gone for longer than that, and the remainder of the crew is mostly from WinD which is experiencing enough grief just trying to finish fansubbing Kai.) But the Onikakushi translation by Sonozaki Futagotachi is active and progressing well.

Just for those who havnt noticed (like I didnt), the progress made by the Sonozaki Futagotachi has been split into its own thread.

So anybody know if this has been completely dropped, or still has a possibility of starting up again?

A couple groups are in the process of starting/completing these arcs, as well as Watanagashi-hen and Tatarigoroshi-hen. The newcomer group KGKA is leading the charge.

But aren't those the manga, and not the games? This thread is about the game translations.

I've tried installing the Matsuribayashi version of the patch but I can't get it to run properly (perhaps because I use Vista?) even when I turn on compatibility mode. Does anyone know how to extract the text so that I can read the translated part of Miagoroshi-hen or else where to find a text version of this translation?

Chapter 6 is my personal favourite up until the current translation :D
I have a problem I cant get it to run I could run the chapter three patch fine but i cant run this patch it just says that the onscripter dont work and I dont know how to get it to work and I have changed the unicode to japanese:confused::upset::help::bow::T_T::sad:
I realize I'm bumping a really old topic, but after struggling for an hour trying to get this Ch 6-7 patch to work, I found out how to make it work.
Apparently the onscripter from the patch doesn't work (at least for me), when I try to open it up it does the "onscripter.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close" thing. So what I did was copy the onscripter.exe used in the Onikakushi-hen patch by Sonozaki Futagotachi into the folder with the patch contents and used that, and it works perfectly now...
Still won't work for me, I just see the 07th-expansion screen, then I can hear cicadas and a black screen >_> But could also be that I installed Matsuribayashi wrong. Nyan. 'Cause even the batch.dat won't work for me properly.

Does anyone have a link to one of the games for mac?
Answering an old question, but for the benefit of those who read after...
If you have a Mac, you can play Higurashi's VNs on it using Onscripter for Mac once Higurashi is installed. The way I did it was to using Parallels with the disc, installing it to the Desktop, and then using Onscripter by placing that app within the folder. But this would require you to have Windows & Parallels, along with the Higurashi disc. If you check out the website for one of the translation efforts (http://sonozakifutagotachi.blogspot.com/2008/10/getting-game.html), they lead you to a place to pay for a legal download. I'm unsure how they arrange the files, but if they give you the installed game files, you would be able to play it on a Mac without having to do what I did.
Moving on from that, I was wondering if anyone could explain or give a detailed post on the current translations available up until this point, especially in terms of the Kai chapters. I've seen there is a group currently working to translate the first game and on Watanagashi-hen, but I noticed this thread talks about the Kai chapters and mentions it is incomplete.
So my questions are thus:
1. Does anyone have any download links still to the Kai translation efforts that were dropped?
2. Is anyone currently in the process of translating the Kai chapters?
3. Is there any interest in renewing an effort to translate the 4 chapters in the Kai game?
Sorry this isn't entirely in the right place (Although semi-related!), But I didn't really know of a better place to ask in.
If there was a general "Higurashi Game" section. I think I either missed it (In that case I'm sorry x_o) or it's way dead. And I don't like to necro things that much.
I watched the anime, loved it. And now want to play the game. (Even more so now that I learned that it was so butchered)
What version should I get?
- DS (Kizuna)
Does this have the music of the original? (Since I hear it's good) Do you think the kanji would be too small for someone who isn't used to trying to identify them?
(Btw, the DS is region free right?)
- Mangagamer's translated version
When it's out anyway. Think they'll ruin the translation much?
Would they possibly have Voices? Will they use the original Music/CG, or use the PS2/DS ones?
- Fantranslation
Only Onikakushihen if I recall right? Would probably be the better of the translations, but only partial.
Would it just be better for me to try and dive into the whole game untranslated, rather then relying on this translation to get me through the first episode of the game?
- (Dunno if there even is one...) Voice Patch?
Does anyone know if there's a voice patch that would allow the original PC version to have the PS2/DS voices?
I love two of the Seiyuu, but I've also already grown to love them all. So it'd be nice if there was a patch for this.
Although, if there was a patch. And it messed with the original music. I think I may pass it up. (Dunno if messing with the CGs would make me pass it up or not)
- Original Version
Should I just suck it up, try playing through the original with my limited japanese (Barely taken a step into the world of kanji!), and not even being able to hear voices?
If I managed to get decently far, I'm sure my understanding of Kanji would increase so much.
However, I'm still waaay to beginner here.
Something like a translation would make sure I understand the story. Or even Voices would help me identify the Kanji in a more timely fashion.
Thanks if you take the time to answer.
I need to know what to buy, and if needed (patches) what to research on.
This thread is dead since the Hinamizawa Club dropped the project. Here's the new translation thread: http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?t=63905
Personally, I would play the fan-translation made by Sonozaki Futago-tachi first and then wait until mangagamer release the other arcs (hoping that their translation will be good). Onikakushi-hen is free so you can start playing it right now if you want to without buying anything. You can get the game here (http://www.sendspace.com/file/q2lmtp) with the english patch pre-installed.
Now, about Kizuna, I haven't played it but I know that it differs from the original in some ways so you might want to play both if you're a hardcore fan. The most notable difference is that Kizuna combine some of the arcs into a branching story while the original was completely linear. Shion from Sonozaki Futago-tachi gave her impressions (http://sonozakifutagotachi.blogspot.com/2009/02/starting-watanagashi-thoughts-on-ds.html) on the first Kizuna game so you can read that if you want. And yes, the DS is region free. ;)
So yeah, I would personally go with the original if you only want to play one version of Higurashi. You might not like the amateur looking art at first but I can assure you that they will grow on you after a while.
