Since the Death Note forum is now limited (only Mods and Admin can create new threads), this thread serves as a way to request a new thread to be created.
Please post here if you wish to request a new Death Note thread. Please bear in mind that we will only accept reasonable requests, we wish to maintain the focus within the forum and cut down on the noise (so no pointless threads cluttering up the place).
Don't forget that you may still post in existing threads as usual, the only restriction is that you may not create new threads within this particular forum.
How 'bout we put a request thread for avies and siggies? You know, for people who want one?
How about a "Death Note" thread...
A thread were people would post victims and humoros ways of death...
Ex: "George Bush, death by killer terorist lolis"

However, most likely, the Mods won't allow such a poll because :
It's a 1 line generator ("I voted yes.." "I voted no..")
Judging from the "reaction" from my suggestion above, the possible reasoning behind votes is likely to be situated in a "gray zone".

That's about the reason plus the fact it wouldn't exactly generate serious suggestions or discussion.
I only watched the anime so far (ep. 3) and thought about an interesting aspect: Since you can write down times, you can write dates as well, right? why doesnt Light write his own name and let the death be on his 111th birthday cause of sugar-shock or something? then the shinigami-eye-trade-thingy wouldnt be a thread anymore, right? or if the timespan would be halfed just say 200th birthday... even then he has enough time to live. and he can be assured, that he wont get the death-sentence, since he allready knows how he dies. any failures in this thought? discuss!

If you read the Q&A thread or at least the first volume of the manga, you should be able to see why something like this wouldn't really be possible...

Bah, a pox (in the nicest way of course :heh: ) on you NSW! I had thought out a much longer response than that...but you summed it up well just using the point about the Shinigami eyes. There's another side to this which further debunks it, but since it probably won't be revealed until episode 4, I won't mention it.

I guess that it's no big deal. We can just have ONE thread that would deal with all that that will end up spanning over 20+ pages once we get deeper into the series. Then the topic would just, eventually get lost, since new people into the dicussion will just glaze over it eventually.

And if required, we could have a separate Death Note Speculation & Theories thread for the anime-only viewers where no spoilers are allowed.

I was going to start a thread entitled "If You Were George W. Bush...", discussing the following ethical supposition:
Not having read the manga I don't know how all this comes out and whether Kira is stopped or not, but supposing he isn't, and the investigations fail and he's still out whacking people he doesn't like...consider the following:
Certainly Kira won't stick to whacking petty violent criminals. In order to truly remake the world in his image, he's eventually going to have to get around to whacking major international leaders. In our current world this would likely include major terrorist leaders like Osama bin Laden, but could also very well include leaders like the President of the US (if you feel that the world's only superpower were abusing its might to push other nations around) or officers of major transnational corporations (arms manufacturers or monopolistic conglomerates).
If you were, say, president of the USA, and had sworn an oath to protect the population and the government of the USA from all threats foreign and domestic, and you knew there was some mysterious power out there kacking your cabinet members or American citizens of note, and you also knew (thanks to L) that the source of the threat, whatever its exact nature, was localized to the central Kanto region of Japan; and you knew that covert law enforcement ops to ferret out the danger had failed: would you be justified in launching a pre-emptive nuclear strike to turn the entire Kanto plain into radioactive glass?
(Tactically this would have to be a submarine-launched strike, since the target is so close to the sea you could minimize the time between launch and impact -- needed to prevent Kira from getting a warning of his impending doom and quickly bumping off as many people in retaliation as possible. An ICBM strike could give Kira a full 30 minutes to scribble names of half of Congress in the Death Note.)
Before answering, consider: many people in these threads have argued that Kira isn't an altogether bad guy because he's whacking evil people, and preventing threats from worsening. Wouldn't you, as president, be doing fundamentally the same thing in preventing Kira from threatening the government and peoples of the USA? And considering you'd be removing threats to their nations as well, most other countries (other than Japan, naturally) would probably reluctantly support you.
And if you are horrified by this concept, why is what Kira is doing different/morally superior?
Moderators: As was suggested, this might in a sense go under the Morality thread, but as was mentioned, would probably rapidly become lost after a while. Also since it's a construct outside the Death note storyline, it's not entirely clear that it would belong there at all anyway...
I'm not that convinced such a topic is desirable actually, or at least in a separate thread. What's wrong with it being part of the Morals thread? If it gets swamped then that implies that there isn't much interest in that topic.
How about a thread asking what you might do with a death note other than what Light is doing? I'm interested in the notion of not using it to impose the death penalty on the criminal justice system, but using it to get to those places which normal justice just doesn't reach...

Done & Done. I think moving the thread was a slight slip of the mind of the moderator who did moved the thread. Typically once a series has it's own forum it doesn't matter if it's licensed or not and all threads will remain in the forum.
I humbly request or at least to be put into consensus the creation of a poll thread to discuss thoughts and opinions about a possible Hollywood adaptation to DEATH NOTE into an American film, as long as said request has not been recommended yet by anybody else.
DEATH NOTE fans can vote and discuss if they agree or if they are against in that thread.
I mean just look at all the gist that American adaptations from Asian horror films have garnered in the States like, for example, Ju-on and Ringu.
Why not DEATH NOTE?
Episode 14 has aired. Did the episode-thread get swallowed by forum gremlins, perhaps?
@Guido: Actually, I think a stronger basis for that type of thread is the fact that there's been a lot of rumors and what have you about Hollywood studios having an interest in Death Note. It's definitely a more worthwhile question than just "Why not Death Note?" IMO. Good topic idea.

Probably the major character so far are already there, though there's a character that I'd love to add, despite the low screen-time, and that would be Jealous.

Out of this world influence is a very important aspect of the Death Note universe.
Shinigami, their Death Notes, and several other supernatural aspects are major factors in this story. We don't know much about of them, and most of the information we have comes either from the Shinigami themselves (and they can lie) or from the so-called "How to use" rules for Death Note.
Of course, the latter are far from actually being just "How to use", especially with rules such as XXXVI There are male and female gods of death,but it is neither permitted,nor possible for them to have sexual relations with humans.
The gods of death also cannot have sex with each other.
Rather, these are an attempt to answer some of the readers questions.

There are two sets of them - one being in Japanese, the other in English.
How different are they?

Thinking about it twice, actually, it would be good to wait until the anime is a few more weeks into the second half of the story before posting this, but that's obviously up to your discretion. :)

I'm thinking of a "Death Note ownership transfer" thread, as the story progresses, it can become quite confusing as to who actually owns which DN, who is really just safekeeping the DN and not owning it outright, and which Shinigami the DN follows. The DN timeline would be based mainly from the vol 13 "How To Read" official data book.
Wonder if this is a good idea? Though I'm also fine with it being in the Q&A thread.

I also like the idea of a thread more. Because (at least from my point of view) it could be the place for questions about the facts stated.
So, go ahead creating (here) an introductory post for it and I'll move it into a new thread.
My only recommandation would be to keep manga spoilers from future events out of it. Only events already happened, or on par with the anime. It can be updated if needed.
Finally, if it's a long piece that you have to write, you can split your explanations in more than one post. As long as it's comfortable with you.

Thanks for the idea, but we'll pass. We prefer to create threads where there is a stronger possibility of on-topic discussion. We're at the very end of the show now and most random threads that should be made have already been made. At this point the only threads waiting to be made are threads that relate to these last few episodes.

The anime is all but finished, there aren't any remaining new story arcs that could spoil anime-only viewers. I'd be interested to see the poll results. :)

Introduction: 1-3 (Raye Penbar does come into the story *somewhat* during 3)
Raye Penbar: 4-7
Suspicion: 8-10
The Second Kira: 11-15
Restraint: 16-17 (The Yotsuba arc came into the story towards the end of 17)
Yotsuba: 18-23
Silence: 24-26 (the start of 24 ends the Yotsuba story, the end of 26 starts part 2 of DN >_<)
I'm struggling to structure 27-37 into arcs, the story moved much faster than the manga at this stage. It might be easier to list the amount of manga chapters used instead?

No, please keep the division related to anime only. If someone wants to help Maes Hughes, he's welcome to do so :)
I'd also appreciate if someone could write 1-2 lines of description for each arc (not too spoilerish, just a brief synopsis). The purpose is to include them on the first post of the poll, to help people choosing.

Introduction: Yagami Light finds a Death Note, a notebook with the power to kill anyone whose name is wrote in it, later coming to learn it was once owned by a Death God. He decides to use his new power to create a better world. However, his new power brings him a troublesome new enemy; L.
Raye Penbar: Light is being followed by someone. He comes up with a plan to reveal the mans identity, involving a bus and a local criminal...
Suspicion: Someone outside Light's family has been in his room whilst he was out. His worries are later worsened by meeting someone who reveals himself to be L.
The Second Kira: Another Death Note user is revealed. Light later gets asked by L to join up with Kira investigation and share his views on this new problem.
Restraint: The second Kira (Amane Misa, now Light's girlfriend) has been caught, with Light very close to being captured as a result. With the threat of being captured by L and being killed by Rem (Misa's sympathetic Death God) forcing him into action, Light comes up with a plan and decides to allow L to put him under 24 hour surveillance...
Yotsuba: Light and Misa lose their memory (part of Light's plan) and are both later semi-cleared. As a result, The Kira investigation has to go in a different direction... Strangely, many deaths that favour a corporation known as Yotsuba have been happening recently.
Silence: L can hear church bells; are the bells for a wedding or a funeral?

No, it's that they'll be very handy for a poll. And they can't be long either otherwise one would be discouraged to read. Good work by the way :)
Now there's only the work on the last arcs left. You don't need to hurry though, as said, the thread/poll won't be created until the series is over ;)

Not just the obvious ones, I'm talking about making a list of all the rules that appear in the middle of episodes like "If you misspell a person's name 4 times on a death note, he cannot be killed by that death note". (This can create some interesting discussions like why didn't light misspell his own name 4 times?)

The interesting thing about that is that not only did Light not know that rule (Ryuk only gave him so many.), but there is another rule that makes that rule useless.

Ide was just Aizawa's old partner. He didn't do anything by himself throughout the series.
You could remove Raye Penber from the list because ultimately he was just a victim like Hirokazu Ukita.
You should add SPK member Halle Lidner; She was also important throughout the final story arc.

It's just a thought, I'm interested in where people's opinions lie.

There is something that I would like to disscuss involving events that happened in volume one and a rule that was shown in volume six

In volume one, light tried to kill Takuo Shibuimaru, but... he wrote the name over 7 times... and the rule in volume six, rule XXXV, quoted down to exact word...
"If a death note owner accidentally misspells a name four times, that person will be free from being killed by the death note. However, if the intentionally misspell the name four times, the death note owner will die"
so either light got the name right the 3rd or 4th time... or they made this mistake.
I dont have volume one with me but ill check on which try he got it right later, ill edit it in if no one replies

i suggest we make a plot hole thread because i recently found a plot hole! A really big one! Because i found it and it really is a major one...if this would of played out as the rules of this anime said it should it wouldn't of happened yet the whole show would of been much less interesting because this caused L to suspect Light...know if you want the details either make a Plot Hole thread so others could post them too or send me a message.

Hi there, I'm a big Death Note fan. In the winter of 2007 I had an opportunity to go to Japan and while there I caught a few movies, I then found out that Death Note 3 was going to be released in the Spring of 2008. I never got a chance to go back that Spring to see it in theaters, but I will be going to see it in the US because it's going to be released NATIONWIDE for 2 nights only.

I've been informed that this is a re-release of the series as seen from Ryuk's point-of-view as he describes things to another Death God. I've also been informed that it will contain new footage (and I even saw some of that on YouTube). The first volume, Visions of a God, is being released June 23, 2009. I'm curious to hear people's opinions of this and if they will buy it or not.
