Is there any hint in the manga.

There is an extra Vol. 13 coming out, in which L's real name will supposedly be revealed.
Impossible methods of death are neglected and the person will die of a heart attack automatically.
In the occasion where the cause of death is possible but the situation is not, only the cause of death will take effect for that victim. If both the cause and the situation are impossible, that victim will die of heart attack.

It will be shown in the anime in an episode or 2, but if you really really wanna know.........
The death needs to make sense in the context of what the victim knows, where the victim is and the plausibility of the death's scenario. Otherwise it'll just be a mere heart-attack.
Such as you can't write someone who's in jail to die in front of somewhere else that cannot be reached in the time-span of the person's death time nor can you write someone off to death in a car accident when there's no car around anywhere nearby.

Q. I heard rumors that the mangaka was actually female using a pseudonym, is it true? how much we know about the mangaka?
The author is being treated as a female probably because he/she chose an image of a female squatting in one of the author introduction.
In addition, as Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsugumi_Ohba) says, 'it is suspected that "Tsugumi Ohba" is only a pen-name for a more famous author'.
In conclusion, we have no sure way of knowing.
Which was the inspiration the author used to design and make the Shinigami Ryuk?

Yes and...No. Because his real name is L Lawliet. So L is his name...but at the same time, it's also not his full name.
He dies. Simple as that. Unless the user of the Death Note is a shinigami of course.
It does flow differently in their system of time calculation, proven from how Light's lifespan doesn't seem to be in day/month/years system. However, it is never shown if time specifically flows differently there compared to human world, however it's not like it makes any difference for them since technically shinigamis can live forever.

You are aware that this could spoil Future event that will haopen in the anime?? Here it is, read it at your own discretion:
I will answer as best as I can, If I made A Mistake, people please let me know.
1- Is not known, because L name was never really revealed in the Manga, I heard that a side story will be made were its going to be revealed. I also doubt it, I think is just the First letter of a nickname he has(I do think the Nick Name is in english) , like two to other character that will be presented in the future.
2-Of course.
3- Nothing was said about that, and I really doubt there is a difference.
Yes and...No. Because his real name is L Lawliet. So L is his name...but at the same time, it's also not his full name.
Hmmm, when this was revelead???? Not to mention you are aware that Mellow was not M real name and Near was not N real name. So maybe this Lawliet name is the same for L.

L's real name was never revealed in the manga storyline, but recently an extra book was released (How to read or something like that) which gives his full name. There was a thread which had that info, I'll dig it up if you want.
There's no reason to think that they won't, imho. If the user pictures himself/herself while writing their own name, it stands to reason that they will die. This is speculation on my behalf though.
Based on the scanlations and Viz's translation of the scene (I've yet to watch the fansub), Ryuk uses the word 'convert', so it seems like time is calculated differently. The other thing is that Ryuk also mentions how if a Shinigami kills someone at 40 years of age when they were supposed to live until 60, those 20 years of human world time get added to the lifespan of the Shinigami. So it does indeed seem like it is simply a difference in calculating the time rather than it flowing differently.

There was a 13th book released just recently I believe, which was "How to Read" a.k.a. Volume 13: Truth. Apparently there's a lot of character info in that book. That's where L's real name is revealed. Go to the second last page in the manga discussion thread, there's talk of it there.

q) the death note says if a human uses the book, he/she cannot go to heaven or hell. what happens to the user then? if that statement is true, then in the death note universe there is a heaven and hell?
A)
Seras, it's not clear from the context of the anime what Ryuk meant, and so it's supposed to be interpreted subjectively by the viewers. For that reason, I really don't think you should ask it, to enjoy the series fully.
However, if you still want a more definite answer,
Later on, we learn that Ryuk just meant that you don't go to either one because they don't exist. He only said that because he thoughts humans believed in those things.
So yeah, if you just asked this question because you thought you were missing something, don't worry, you weren't.
There is an extra Vol. 13 coming out, in which L's real name will supposedly be revealed.
So is the manga going to end at vol. 13 or vol. 12., officially? Is vol. 13 just a side story which does not affect the main story or is it the "true" ending, like most of TV series is doing now?

Vol 13 is more of a data book full of information on the characters and whatnot than part of the story. So the end of the plot really is volume 12.
I hear that there's a brief epilogue in volume 13, though I haven't gotten my copy yet and can't verify this in person. Apparently it involves
Ryuk dropping his DN in the human world again.

One thing that doesn't make sense to me is that most names have at least one or two people using them in the world, at least. So when he writes down "John Smith," shouldn't 50 people be dying, rather than just the person Light has in mind?

what is death note about?
hikaki tai,
"Death Note" is set in the year 2003 in Japan (present-day, when the story was written). In this anime, shinigami (death gods / reapers) exist, and they possess "death notes" which are notebooks where if you write a person's name, they die. The plot is that one of these comes into the possession of a human, and describes what he chooses to do with it, and all that follows. It's a suspenseful horror drama, of sorts, and full of secrecy and elaborate plots, but is also classified as "shounen".
AniDB's description is more detailed, but spoils the premise, which is only established in the first two episodes, so I just thought I might give you that more vague description.
Light Yagami is an ace student with great aspects who`s bored out of his mind. One day he finds the Death Note a notebook held by a shinigami (Death God). with the Death Note in hand, Light decides to create a perfect world. A world without crime or criminals. However when criminals start dropping dead one by one, the authorites send the legendary detective L to track down the killer.

Preface: Ryuk informs Light/(Raito?) of the trade of half his remaining years of life in exchange for the shinigami ability to know someone's name by looking at them.
Q. Wouldn't the only reason Light would have for accepting this deal would be if he was about to be caught (and subsequently executed)? Won't this just result in him escaping execution but dying twice as soon? Or can he change his fate through the notebook?
Q. Is the death note capable of being revised granted a sufficiently delayed time of death, or are all entries final?
Preface: The death note seems to be capable of manipulating events other than the actions of the person whose name is written (any car accident death)
Q. Could Light just write his name and include something akin to "10/27/2102. Dies peacefully of old age"
BTW, for the cautious, none of these spoilers are for beyond episode 3 in the anime, unless otherwise noted (there are spoilers within spoilers for the manga):
division,
A )
Yep, your reasoning's correct,
As Light confirms when he decides not to take the eyes.
The name, once it's written down, is completely final.
Cause of death is more complicated. You only have 40 seconds after you write the note to specify the basic cause of death (like "ants" or "children") and the time of death (on a side note, it has to be >= 40 seconds after the name is written). You can adjust it within that time frame, like cross off the time of death, but after that you can't. Then you have another 6 minutes 40 seconds (that's 7 min 20 sec total) to write down details, and the same applies: you can cross off parts and adjust it before that time runs, but after it's set in stone. Basically, you could say it's like you have two tiers of specification.
This is all information you can find in the How to Use rules which you see in the middle of each episode.
You mean natural death, correct? Then, nope. Two reasons. #1, the natural cause of death can't be overwritten by the death note. If you are supposed to die at a certain time but wrote yourself to die later on, the death note would not work to also counteract the natural cause of death, unless what you specified happen to address that situation (in which case, it would mean that that wasn't your natural cause of death, just what you thought was your natural cause of death but which you prevented... ahaha, this is a good way to confuse yourself). #2, you can't specify a date you die more than 23 days after your name is written. In fact, the only way you can make yourself die later than 23 days is to write "death by illness" and specify an illness that will take more time.

Q. Why do I hear some people calling him Raito, and some Light...is just because Light sounds a lot like Raito (in Japanese...), or is it the way it's spelled, or...? Because in the manga, at least in my scanslations, it switches from Raito to Light on me.
NoSanninWa
2006-11-24, 00:50
A. In the manga the japanese characters used for his name are ambiguous as to how they should be written in English. Literally they are closer to "Raito" since the Japanese have no way of actually writing "Light." However at one point in the manga the English spelling of "Light" was used for his name (I think on jacket art) and after that it was accepted that his name was Light.
The scanlations changed from Raito to Light as soon as the manga volume with the English spelling appeared. They had a tl note in that chapter to explain the change. It had more detail than my fading memory, but I can't look it up for you.

Q. In the details of the death, can he describe false things? Say a person dies by a car crash, can he add a mark on the victims neck to indicate strangling?
Unless the victim starts strangling himself and then dies by car crash, I don't think so.
The Death Note can only do things which would actually be physically possible in the world. It can't make strangle marks spontaneously appear, nor can it manipulate others around him to strangle him, but it can pretty much 100% control the victim within his capibility.
This might be a stupid Q but does Death Note only air in Japan? I've seen it on Winamp's ShoutCast TV but only up to ep 7
Q: How did Light get that TV inside the(apparently closed) bag of chips? I mean, if it wasn't closed, when and why did he put it in, he couldn't have done it while there were cameras(Unless he bought it himself) and if he put it in before the cameras were placed, why did he put it into the closet? And most of all, WHY was it in the top of the pile, anyone could have taken it and found the TV inside. If it was the bottom one in the pile, I could understand...
Q2: Could the death note kill other people than intended, like for example: "(Name) Nuclear Strike". If possible, would it be possible to write "(Name) Apocalypse, hit by huge meteor which destroys the planet" and would it destroy the planet?

Like Light said several times, he was clever enought to "spare"some criminals, and keep them in its agenda. in fact, you can consider it as a "back up plan". and indeed, he put the bag in the closet with the others to prevent being suspicious.
in the manga, it was explained that Light was the only one who eat THAT flavour of potato chips, so he assumed that no one will open it, so he didn't bother to put this bag under the pile (it would be weird if he would have to pull out a single bag, while there are a lot on the top.)
furthermore, if he put the bag under the pile, it wouldn't be good, since the shape of the compressed bag would suggest there is something inside, while on the top, it doesn't suffer of any compression

If possible, would it be possible to write "(Name) Apocalypse, hit by huge meteor which destroys the planet" and would it destroy the planet?light discovered in his tests that he cannot order an irrational death.
also, the conditions for death will not be realized unless it is physically possible for that human or it is reasonably assumed to be carried out by that human. (taken from HOW TO USE IT VI)
also, for the "nuclear" thing, IIRC, you cannot specify a death that would involve anyone else. (i'm trying to find the source.)

By influencing I suppose you mean something like "strangled to death by name" or something similar. However, how far can one go before Death Note just makes it a heart attack?
You are allowed to write "run over by a car" and it will happen, this influences other people yet you can't make a third person kill your victim. Surely there is a mid-point below which the death is accepted but above it just results in a heart attack.

Basically, if the cause of death creates a situation where anybody else besides the intended victim is killed, then the intended victim will only die of a heart attack.

Getting hit by a car is the victim's doing because the Death Notw will influence him to suddenly jump in front of the car so that the driver has no chance to stop himself. The same as if the victim went to a shooting range and jumped in frotn of someone's target, while the person did technically shoot him, it was the victim's own doing.

Actually, time is considered on the same terms as the basic cause of death, and needs to be written in the first 40 seconds. My post in this topic at http://forums.animesuki.com/showpost.php?p=747482&postcount=35 has an explanation of this, under the spoiler tag "Revision".

probably, but this is rather hard to determine such case, since it would be a bit goofy for the death note user to be such careless.

I have question: Is it possible to stop the death of a person once you write it on your death note book?
Let say for example ep.8 when Naomi walks away to suicide. I happen to be Light and dont want her to die yet, is it possible to reverse it by doing things to prevent her death? since I already know shes going to suicide because I wrote it on the note.
It's impossible to cancel a death.
And this is because:
In the manga on chapter 107, Ryuk said so.
Anyways, the details do need to be written in 6 minutes and 40 seconds after you write the name. Light said that you can write the details first, then write the name. But if he like..wants to extend, say, Naomi's death. He could write something if it's still in the 6 minutes and 40 seconds. But if the 6 minutes and 40 seconds have already passed, then he can't do anything. Also, if he wrote down for Naomi to suicide, then she will definitely suicide. That's a fact that can't be changed. But other details can be added, if he wanted to within that 6 minutes and 40 seconds. Make sense?

no :
" When rewriting the cause and/or details of death it must be done within 6 minutes and 40 seconds.
You cannot change the victim’s time of death, however soon it may be." (How to use XXVIII)
edit : zalith was faster, dang XD
I found Shikimori's question interesting, so I'll add on:Let's say I have a Death Note and I'm conducting this cruel experiment lol
I have a volunteer for this and his name is John. He is sitting on a chair in the middle of a totally enclosed room, like an asylum cell. The only way to get out is through a door which I have the keys. The door is currently open and he can walk out of it anytime.
I'm going to write in the Death Note:1 minute from now, John will walk out of the room, cross the street and die from a car crash.
So I wait for him to start walking. But at the point he stands up from the chair, about to walk towards the door, I lock the door shut. This means its impossible for him to fufil the death.
What will happen?
1. He will live as its impossible for him to get out to fufil his death.
2. He will die from heart attack as he was written to do something that has suddenly become impossible.
3. Or he will he attempt to knock the door down to satisfy this urge to get out and cross the road to his death.
4. And if he fails to knock down the door, he will die from a heart attack.
I'm thinking he will die of a heart attack, yea?

i guess my question might be mis-leading. But is just as C.A. said.
What if I know Naomi is going to die and I lock both her arms and legs so she cannot commit suicide? Of course she can always bit her tougue to kill herself but that doesnt satisfy the condition: Do not disturb others while commiting the suicide.
But Judging from C.A.'s post, I assume Naomi will die from Heartattack, maybe?

If someone is unable to fulfill the conditions of their death, then they have a heart attack, just as if no conditions or cause of death was written. That was proven by Light when he experimented on prisoners.
Klashikari: Great minds think alike, no? xD;
Adding on to Sannin's answer:
Yes, although "1 minute from now, John will walk out of the room, cross the street and die from a car crash." alone isn't an "impossible condition," if someone interferes on purpose by like..locking the door, then the victim will simply die of a heart attack. Though I'm not that sure, since he hasn't experimented enough for me to say that.
Remember the episode where he was experimenting with what he can do with the prisoners's actions? And he wanted one of them to die in front of the Eiffel Tower within an hour? Well, I guess it could be possible if he was placed on a spaceship or something. But that might be included as something that people wouldn't do if they never had a thought about it. So if the police officers never had a thought of placing the prisoner on a spaceship to send him to France, then it's impossible. This relates to how Light wanted one of the prisoners to write "L suspects the police officers." And that prisoner just died of a heart attack, since he never thought about that.
I found Shikimori's question interesting, so I'll add on:
What will happen?
1. He will live as its impossible for him to get out to fufil his death.
2. He will die from heart attack as he was written to do something that has suddenly become impossible.
3. Or he will he attempt to knock the door down to satisfy this urge to get out and cross the road to his death.
4. And if he fails to knock down the door, he will die from a heart attack.
I'm thinking he will die of a heart attack, yea?
Sometimes, whether a death is impossible isn't easy for the note to ascertain. It's possible that people around him could be indirectly manipulated by the death note to obtain his death. Or, it's possible that he would attempt to knock down the door like you said.
(Edit: I remembered my example incorrectly.)
To elaborate on Zalith's answer on the previous page,
you can specify time and basic cause of death within the first 40 seconds and details of that within the first 6 min 40 seconds, but after those time periods pass, you can't change them.

This is a stupid question my friend asked me.. and I don't know it.. -.-
Does L have eyebrows? I don't recall seeing him having any...
@myopius:
He tested with 6 prisoners. 3 worked, 3 failed. The ones that worked were=the pentagon sign, the note to L, and the walking to the bathroom. The ones that failed were the France one, the one where he wanted the prisoner to draw a picture of L's face, and where he wanted the prisoner to write "L suspects the police." Those experiments were 2 separate ones XD
@Bondless: Hmm..I never payed attention to that detail. He may have eyebrows in the manga though. Or maybe his hair just covers them XD

I have heard nothing of the sort, personally.
1) If is indeed true, you probably would see threads all around about Death Note being cancelled
2) If it is a rumor, nothing about it is being confirm unless it is stated on official websites.
3) Why is it cancelled? for what purpose? because is too burtal or tragic?
Besides.....where have you read that Death Note is cancelled? Can you provide us with info/links that we can check it out if is even reliable?

A question about the Live action movie of death note.
Q: Is it licensed by any company?.
Q2: Does the live action movie end the whole story?. Or it is just an alternate story to Manga and anime.
Please if the answers of my questions have spoilers on them please make sure to put it in spoiler tag :).
Thanks in advance.

A1. Nope, the live action movie is not licensed.
A2. It is just an alternate story.
What is the deal with Misa's eyes? (I do not mean her Shinigami eyes)
Throughout episode 14 her eyes seemed to change from blue to brown and back again to blue.
It also happened the same in episode 13.
It's a stupid animation mistake, I think. :( I believe that her eyes are brown (or very dark brown) in all of the official manga art... she also looks much better that way IMO.
Question: What is the average lifespan of a Deathgod?
I'm curious after it is revealed, the new girl with Shinigami power (I need to work on these names :p ) got her extension in life as Jealous expires to give his own to her. That development leads to a couple of other questions, but I'll hold them for now to see if they are answered in the upcoming episodes. :)

AFAIK, Deathgods can live as long as they want. When a deathgod kills a human using their Death Note, the cut-off lifespan of that human (meaning the time the human would have lived until dying a natural death) is transferred to the Deathgod's lifespan. I could be mistaken...

It's already explained that Death Note holders (humans) cannot extend their lifespans by killing other humans.
My question is if a human is killed by a Death Note holder, his or her remaining life span goes to the Shinigami, who is the original owner of the Death Note it lent to the human using it?
For example, would Ryuk's lifespan has been extended immensely due to Light's godly purge of ridding the world of criminals using his (Ryuk's) Death Note?
Or those remaining life spans go to waste into oblivion?
the.Merines
2007-01-29, 21:14
I don't believe Ryuk gains the lifespans of those killed by Light/Kira. As you stated, the shinigami is the original owner, but when Ryuk's Deathnote is left in the human world and picked up by Light, Light gains possession of the Deathnote. At that point it is Light's Deathnote; it was simply associated with Ryuk before Light's involvement. Ryuk doesn't write any of Kira's victims' names in the Deathnote, so he gains no lifespan from them.
Also, the someone posted earlier about Misa's eyes changing color, to which someone replied that it was a "stupid animation mistake." This isn't true- it is done on purpose. Misa is a popular model/actress who assumes many looks. More than likely she wears contact lenses that change her eye color, which explains her magical color-changing eyes.

Ryuk definitely doesn't get the lifespans of the people Kira's killing simply because it's not his Death Note anymore, so he has to stay at Lights side because it once was his Death Note, but he doesn't get the lifespans because it's not his DN anymore...
To agree wiht the two post before me:
Nope, Ryuk Life spam is not augmented by the use Light is giving it, the current owner of the Death Note is Light, as Ryuk doesn’t have any auhtority over this Death Note.
If the Shimigamis would had gained life spam when the Humans use it, the lazy Shimigmais would had given up their Death Notes to Humans, so while the Shimigmais are playing whatever it is they play, the Humans that have the respective deathnotes would be using them and thus helping the Simigmais lifespam.

That was the same questions for a lot of manga readers.

yeah, kinda lame, but since DN is already that fancy, that "wouldn't be that surprising.

Q: How much time has passed in the DN world during episode 1-16 of the anime?
It's impossible to cancel a death.
And this is because:
In the manga on chapter 107, Ryuk said so.
I recall from the second Death Note movie...
One of the "How to Use" scenes said it is possible to cancel a death by drawing TWO straight lines through the person's name to cancel his death.
Ok i have another stupid question, what would happen if one changed their name or have multiple name?
It’s Only on Birth Names, as L used multiples names and The Death Note can only work on his real name.
Q: How much time has passed in the DN world during episode 1-16 of the anime?
Anime wise it has no been mentioned, I dont recall in Manga, but taking a feel of the day to day evenst that happens in the DN universe, Its almost one year since the moment Light took DN in his Hands.

In Death Note Rem tells Misa she had her life-span extended by a shinigami who fell in love with her and died and that's why she got her Death Note. Did someone fall in love with Light too or did Ryuk really just drop it?
The first episode explains that Ryuk dropped it because he was really bored and wanted to be entertained by the human who would pick it up (Light). If I remember correctly, when Light asks Ryuk why he was chosen to become owner of the Death Note, Ryuk tells him that he didn't pick Light. Ryuk says he just dropped the Death Note in that area, and Light just happened to pick it up.
It looks more like Rem and Ryuk's reasons for giving their spare Death Notes to humans are very different. :)

They are two different versions of the same story. Neither happens before the other.
I would recommend watching the anime first since it covers the story in greater detail. Otherwise you'll just have a lot of points spoiled before you see it done properly. Of course this is just my opinion on how it would be best.

Q1: Will the victim die if he has an artifical/transplanted heart?
nice question.
i would say the artifical heart would cease function. (this is only a wild guess XD)
Q2: If a shinigami killed a lot of people and then gave his life away to somebody he loves, will all of his enormous remaining lifespan be transferred to that person? Can Misa really live to be thousands of years old?no, humans will never be able to increase their life span with other remaining life span. this extended life is only usable by the shinigami.
however, humans can extend their life span if their cause of death was altered. (i.e : a shinigami killed a person A, who would decrease somehow the health of somebody, named B, B would certainly live longer)
however, i'm not sure if the life span "display" would change.
we know that life span are not changed if the person is afflicted with a impending death due the death note, but there is no information if the life span would be "updated" if it is extended, but i guess not.
Klashikari, It's not what was said in the episode 12:
"Jealous's life was added to the lifespan of the girl he had been watching".
So, is there a limit to the amount of life that she gained or not?
Trading half of eternity for Shinigami's eyes is not such a big deal.
NoSanninWa

I don't believe that question was ever answered. And yes, it was clearly stated that all of Jealous' remainging lifespan was transfered to Misa. This means if Misa's lifespan was 500 years, then it just got cut to 250. Not a bad deal at all.
Obviously she doesn't get eternity. And we don't know how much of a workaholic Jealous was so there is no way to speculate exactly how much time was cut in half.

Hey I have a couple of questions.
Would someone do a rundown for me of the two live-action Death Note movies - when did they come out? Are they at all related? How close are they to manga?
My question is: Assuming I have caught up with the anime (ep 21) and I have NOT read the manga, due to not wanting to be spoiled, is it then safe to watch the movies? Based on assumptions of how the anime will end, will the movies spoil that ending?
Finally, it was mentioned earlier in this thread that the Death Note only works on birthnames. So it won't work on any married woman? Has Raito encountered this problem yet? Or is it simply glossed over in both manga and anime? Please do not respond with manga spoilers, just tell me if this problem was addressed in the manga or not.

haa... my bad, i completely forgot this part o.O
like NoSanninWa said, it wasn't really answered for this part (which was quite weird indeed).
i suspect there is also a limit. even though you can get some life span from a dead shinigami, i guess it will be revert back to the maximum you can get with your current body and the plausible outcome.
since even with the best conditions, human body will cease function due the age, so i guess the extra life span will have no effect if the human reached the maximum allowed considering his life style (and my guess is : if the human have some factors which would normally decrease his/her original life span, it would decrease the extra life span instead. again, wild guess)
Hey I have a couple of questions.
Would someone do a rundown for me of the two live-action Death Note movies - when did they come out? Are they at all related? How close are they to manga?
When :
First Movie : June 2006
Second Movie : November 2006
they are related, the second movie is the sequel of the former.
the first movie is quite close to the manga. i won't be able to comment the second movie though.
My question is: Assuming I have caught up with the anime (ep 21) and I have NOT read the manga, due to not wanting to be spoiled, is it then safe to watch the movies? Based on assumptions of how the anime will end, will the movies spoil that ending? we don't know if Madhouse will introduce a new end or not (people thought they wouldn't be able to introduce yotsuba arc and Mellow/Near arc due the number of episodes. in the end they were wrong)
as i could read, the live action movie end is different, though the outcome is kinda similar.
Finally, it was mentioned earlier in this thread that the Death Note only works on birthnames. So it won't work on any married woman? Has Raito encountered this problem yet? Or is it simply glossed over in both manga and anime? Please do not respond with manga spoilers, just tell me if this problem was addressed in the manga or not.No, even if a human change its name "legally", his/her original name required for DN condition is still the same. (this was specified in one "HOW TO USE" about the shinigami eyes.)
that means if Light wants to kill a wife, he would need her original name. (that is not impossible, but it is indeed really tricky)
I don't think light has encountered such situation in the manga... can anyone confirm this? my memories are kinda screwed...
How close are they to manga? The first movie is sorta close but not exactly. They do make changes here and there since it's more like a rough summary. A few things are entirely different from the manga and tv. I have not seen the second movie to be able to comment on it.
My question is: Assuming I have caught up with the anime (ep 21) and I have NOT read the manga, due to not wanting to be spoiled, is it then safe to watch the movies? Based on assumptions of how the anime will end, will the movies spoil that ending? The first movie: yes, it is safe. The second movie: no, definitely not. There are things in the second movie which are still coming up in the show.

In the manga there was no mention about adding Jealous life to the lifespan of the girl. @bayoab
Rem was never claiming in Manga that human gets Death gods life as being usable of hers, so that she could live over human normal capacity and that rule don't claim that either. As it felt like it was explained here in Anime. Of course she lives more and that rule is normal rational conclusion. Don't die -> live more :heh: So sentence under Sins1 spoiler is Anime only.
In the manga there was no mention about adding Jealous life to the lifespan of the girl. So I guess it is Anime only.
No, it was in the manga rules:
====How to Use: XVII====
* If the god of death decides to use the Death Note to kill the assassin of an individual he favors, the individuals life will be extended, but the god of death will die.
It just doesn't specify how much.
I don't think the below question spoils anything for you if you're caught up with the anime's current episode. But I'll use the spoiler tag anyway..
Early in the anime (when he joins the investigation team), why doesn't Light just tear off a piece of the death note and write the following on it:
Yagami Souchiro (light's dad)
Finds death note in his room. Takes ownership of the note, and does the Shinigami eyes deal. Goes to work the next day, looks at L and sees his real name. Writes down L's real name on a normal piece of paper. Puts the paper and the death note in Light's room. Gives up ownership of the Death Note and dies in an accident.
If Light just wrote this, he can get L's real name and kill him. When he gets his note back, he can get his memory back (if it happens to be taken away at all.. which I'm not too sure about, because he still has the piece on which he wrote the above). By the way, Light's father can be replaced by anyone in the investigation team.
Thoughts?

Q1: Shinigami's Eyes - do they work on pictures or face-to-face only? Do you have to see the face or is it OK to look from behind?
Following misa's explanations, the effect of shinigami's eyes can be used on pictures. (but not with drawings)
however, you must see most of the face (glasses won't be a problem, but covered mouth with a scarf, for example, will probablky disrupt the effect)
HOW TO USE XX :
In order to see the names and life spans of humans by using the eye power of the god of death, the owner must look at more than half of that person's face.
When looking from top to bottom,he must look at least from the head to the nose.
If he looks at only the eyes and under,he will not be able to see the person's name and life span.
Also, even though some parts of the face, for example the eyes, nose or mouth are hidden,if he can basically see the whole face,he will be able to see the person's name and life span.
It is still not clear how much exposure is needed to tell the name and life span, and this needs to be verified.
If above conditions are met, names and life spans can be seen through photos and pictures,no matter how old they are.
But this is sometimes influenced by the vividness and size.
Also, names and life spans cannot be seen by face drawings, however realistic they may be.
Q2: How detailed/relevant must the picture be to work for Light? Childhood photos, fake/real beard, half mask covering eyes/lower half of the face, glasses, eyepatch, photo from the side, realistic painting of masterpiece quality, excellent facial composite...
this should probably be similar to shinigami eyes conditions

Yea, it just says that the person's life will be extended, not that the shinigami's remaining life will be added to the person they save. However long Misa's own lifespan was due to her health, it was shortened when she made the deal for the shinigami eyes. She's already lived longer than she was supposed to because the stalker didn't kill her.
Rem met with Jealous to watch Misa's life end. They knew when it was going to happen. And Jealous remarked how healthy Misa is. So when Jealous saved Misa, he only freed her from the death she was destined to have?

This must be a continuity error. In an early ep, the rules stated that the God Of Death will stay until the new owner dies or the note is full. This would mean that the note can be filled.
But at the same time, Light has been taking a lot of pages out of his note and he wasn't worried about it.

It's kind of like a mystery-type of genre. From the episodes that I understand, the show is really good. It is about this guy who finds a book that has the power to kill anyone as long as the owner knows the name and face of the victim. Right now the show is a little confusing though.

Three Question:
Is there any particular reason that the Death Note title looks the way that it does?
(ie. first 'E' is backwards, the 'A' and both 'T's are sideways?)
Sorry, if that has been asked before, I can see how it could be but,
Does anyone know where I can find a complete list of the Death Note rules?
Last one, does anyone know if Death Note: How To Read (ie. volume 13) is going to be released in North America?
Q: If the description of how exactly one should die contains the name of some other person, would that other person die? i.e. "John Doe goes to visit his bride, Jane Smith, and commits suicide in front of her".
Does it allow to avoid "can't indirectly kill anyone else" rule? "At night, then she is alone, John Doe goes to visit his bride, Jane Smith, and crashes his personal one-person plane into her house".

Except, one of the manga rules state that the Death Note is finite.
the "unfinite" rule was done way later. that's why i said it was a retcon (and anyway, like stated above, without this rule, it would be hard for Light to keep DN so long, especially in Near/Mellow arc)
Three Question:

no clue. perhaps it is only for aesthetic purpose?

If the Death Note owner wants to specify the death situation, everything will happen as closely as it is written in the DN.
But that rule cannot overlap the "only 1 person dies"
However, if you want someone else to be killed in the same situation, you must state extra "this person shall die" line, which would fit the earlier line.
this matter prevents the death note owner to kill someone without knowing his/her face. the "no one else should die in the stated line" is absolute.
Even though only one name is written in the DEATH NOTE,if it influences and causes other humans that are not written in it to die,the victim’s cause of death will be a heart attack.
so in your example, you would need 2 separated lines :
1) John Doe (the DN owner vizualize his face) commits suicide the XX/XX/XX at XX:XX, by crashing his plane into Jane Smith's house
2) Jane Smith (th DN owner vizualize her face) dies the XX/XX/XX at XX:XX, involved in John Doe suicide.
if the secondname isn't written as a target and/or wasn't vizualised, that second person will simply meets the first target within the according scope.
so in your first example, either way john doe would have an heart attack in front of Jane smith (if the way of suicide is impossible to not involve anyone else), or he will die with the way you described when he meets Jane smith.
But why would you need two lines? You've already written Jane Smith (with the face in the writer's mind) in the Death Note, and according to one of the rules, any individual that has his name written in it shall die.

well, that doesn't really matter if it is 1 or 2 lines right? :heh:
but to my understanding, and AFAIR from the manga, each line only affects 1 person, though it can be linked with other people, as long as their respective descriptions fit with each other death situation.
i can be wrong anyway, but the rest is correct : any additional person should have their own death description with an accorded timing, and a face visualisation.
Q:
How does the lifespan system work? Is it like your natural lifespan in terms of max biological age (i dont think so 'coz of misa who were nearly killed and this were her lifespan.)
So its a future telling thing right? Lifespan from accidents, illness, wars, etc.
Sooooo when you see a dozen people who dies in ~60 Years you can lay low a bit, there will be no wipeout of humankind in the next 60 years? ^^
A: This part is a big logical hole in the rules, so it works as author wishes. No characters ever mention how much time exactly anyone has left, not even the Shinigami themselves.

I hate asking this sort of question, but I need to be certain on this.
Is there any confirmation on how many episodes Death Note has?
The reason I am asking is because I keep seeing the "37 episode count" on various sites, but when I checked in the Death Note Generic topic, someone said that some person made it up. Has the episode count been confirmed from a reliable source, such as Moon Phase?

No, the series is set for 37 episodes.
That piece of information was release while the first/second episode aired.

Seriously, this has gone rumor (made up?)->fact. It started as a rumor and somehow became fact. Nobody is able to link to an official source that states it is actually 37. There is a note on syoboi which says it is "planned for 3 kuru/37 episodes" which probably originated from some "insider". (Note: syoboi has had mistakes many times.)

These are a couple of amateur questions and I know they were answered on page one but I want o ask now that we have eclipsed the half way point of the series.
1.) How closely has the anime been following the manga?
2.) Does it seem that the anime will cover all of the manga or can we expect them to pull an FMA on us?

The anime is rather faithful to the manga. Before the M/N saga, the anime included more details from the manga. After that, they've pretty much cut away some of the more detailed thoughts and dialogues of the characters, probably to shorten the series since it was a little boring compared to the earlier portions of the manga. They also made minor tweaks to the story but not affecting it in any major ways I'd say.
And yes I think the anime will cover the whole manga. I think they will start including more details for the last few episodes since there is only slightly more than one volume worth of materials left.

Here is the official source you so desire.

No offense intended, but I'm afraid you're way outdated. Thirty-bloody-seven episodes announced WAY BACK in November.
Everybody knows it's 37 episodes, even the wikipedia entry says it's 37 episodes for MONTHS without anyone questioning that fact, so it's more or less authentic. If it's spread from a rumour, there would have been variable numbers surrounding the three-kur season rather than a definite number of 37.
Once again, I'm very sorry for "picking a fight", for lack of a better phrase, but I just feel like your statement requires a correction.

9 months. It took 9 months for someone to pull that up. Not a single person I asked could pull up an official source before I saw the Viz listing for sublicensing. (And that was a couple weeks after I made that post). Since October, I have not heard a single response that was not "It was announced... somewhere" or pointing to a user generated content site.

I could easily put a rumor on wikipedia and turn it into fact without it being questioned ever. It's not that hard and has been done many times. Same thing with any user content submitted site (ANN, cal.syoboi, etc). And actually, it probably had gone 37->3 kur since most sites list one or the other.

Well it doesn't exactly work that way on wikipedia, if an user with admin access saw it, he/she would probably lock down the article or at least moderated it. From time to time, I do find vandalism on wikipedia and I try my best to undo the damages.
Unfortunately, every time you have a user-based and submitted content site, they'll be subjected to certain amount of abuses since there are always a certain percentage of people who are malicious.

haa... my bad, i completely forgot this part o.O
like NoSanninWa said, it wasn't really answered for this part (which was quite weird indeed).
i suspect there is also a limit. even though you can get some life span from a dead shinigami, i guess it will be revert back to the maximum you can get with your current body and the plausible outcome.
since even with the best conditions, human body will cease function due the age, so i guess the extra life span will have no effect if the human reached the maximum allowed considering his life style (and my guess is : if the human have some factors which would normally decrease his/her original life span, it would decrease the extra life span instead. again, wild guess)
When :
First Movie : June 2006
Second Movie : November 2006
they are related, the second movie is the sequel of the former.
the first movie is quite close to the manga. i won't be able to comment the second movie though.
we don't know if Madhouse will introduce a new end or not (people thought they wouldn't be able to introduce yotsuba arc and Mellow/Near arc due the number of episodes. in the end they were wrong)
as i could read, the live action movie end is different, though the outcome is kinda similar.
No, even if a human change its name "legally", his/her original name required for DN condition is still the same. (this was specified in one "HOW TO USE" about the shinigami eyes.)
that means if Light wants to kill a wife, he would need her original name. (that is not impossible, but it is indeed really tricky)
I don't think light has encountered such situation in the manga... can anyone confirm this? my memories are kinda screwed...
umm in DEATH NOTE: HOW TO USE XIII it is said that misa dies like year or two after raito-sama at like the gae of 20 something so she doesn't live for a long time. mainly cause she halfed her life twice for raito-sama. so i'm suspecting jealos didn't do all that much.

Don't feel like getting them after I already saw the newer ones. I just want to know instead of going back and watching for 40 minutes.
umm pretty much raito-sama burrys one note and gives the other to rem to give to a high powered business man. you will see the point in this decision later in the series. i myself have finished it ^^

Light explains to Ryuk and later Misa that he wanted the Kira investigation to be suspicious of him to let him get close to L.
He never actually says it, but it's shown that he hates to lose and hates to yield when he thinks he is right or against any challenge. So, he couldn't ignore the FBI agents.

I've wondered for some time now. Can the Death Note actually run out of pages, by being filled up with names?
Of course it could, it doesn't magically add new pages as far as I know.
How exactly do the life expectancies work? In theory, a human is guaranteed to die when his time is up and never before, unless he's killed by a note. Which would mean that humans are in some sense controlled by fate. This all makes sense normally, but how do the death notes factor into this? They obviously operate outside "fate," since heart attack by death note isn't factored into a person's life span.
In that case, is it impossible for the presence of a death note to impact someone's life span in other ways? For example, if Light were caught after killing so many people with the note, he would obviously be executed. But execution is a normal means of death that theoretically could only happen when the criminal's lifespan is up, and Light's lifespan goes on for years. If that's the case, is it safe to say that fate prevented Light from ever being caught until the end, and the people that were caught(Higuchi, Mikami) were going to die pretty soon even had they never acquired the note?
In the same sense, Light's dad died from ordinary gunfire. He made the deal for the eyes a matter of hours before his death. Can we assume that, even had Light never found the death note in the first place, his dad still would have died 6 years later?

How exactly do the life expectancies work?
"How to Use: XXX (#30): If you have traded the eye power of a god of death, you will see a person's primary life span in the human world."
You'll see how long they will most likely live. It apparently includes all events that occur within the human world but excludes intervention by the death note and shinigami. The lifespan is referred to as a date but it also seems to be treated as a quantity. It may be something that only shinigami know how to interpret.
Here is the evidence...
As mentioned earlier Misa's original lifespan included being stabbed by a stalker. Jealous and Rem knew her original lifespan and gathered to watch Misa's life end.
During the course of the anime series we see Light's and Misa's lifespans twice. First, when Rem was talking with Light, Misa and Ryuk in episode 14. Here Misa's lifespan was "1542306" and Light's lifespan was "93302639". Rem told Light that if Misa dies before that date then Rem would assume Light killed her and Rem would kill Light. Later, in episode 24 after the Yotsuba incident, Misa gets Ryuk as her shinigami and makes the deal for shinigami eyes a second time. When Misa goes with Ryuk to visit Light her lifespan changed to "56873", but Light's lifespan stayed the same and remained "93302639".
I don't have episode 29, but I recall that the organized crime mobsters that were part of Mello's gang had various lifespans visible. Their life expectancy did not include the death note being used to schedule their deaths. Their names and lifespans simply vanished from their photographs when they were killed by the death note. I also remember that we saw Soichiro's lifespan in episode 29 when he was in the hospital bed; it was a low number but it was not near zero when he died. I would guess that Soichiro's lifespan from the start of the series would have remained constant until he made the deal with Ryuk for shinigami eyes.
The meaning of lifespan and how it works is something that keeps getting discussed over and over in this thread. It was also discussed in the threads for episode 14, 24 and 29. What it comes down to is that the lifespan is inconsistent and if you are writing a fanfic you can pretty much use it however you wish.

I was just curious
I wonder how much luck I'll have on this, can anyone tell me the correct way to write this? I tried to hunt around but still no clue...:
L: "I am L."
Light: "I am Kira."
I know L begins with "watashi wa... (Eru-desu?)
Light begins with "boku wa... (Kira desu?)
Lol the brackets mean I just gussed and have no idea - can someone correct me?
Also, I remember there was an explanation as to why even though they both say "I am" - yet they say it differently with L saying watashi and Light saying boku. Does anyone know why?
Watashi and Boku(and Ore) has same meaning with I.
Thanks, I did know that :)
But I was trying to remember why L said Watashi and Light said Boku - I remember reading that there was a reason.
Anyway I thought no one would reply and later I managed to ask a friend who speaks Japanese. So I guess I'll put the answer here then :D
~ Watashi is really just more formal and used mostly by anyone.
~ Boku, is something that would identify L as a male.
~ Ore is something a 'tough' guy would say.
But all except Ore are written in the same kanji.

The lifespan isn't a timer, it's a date. Evidence is, as you said, Light's lifespan. And yes, I know that killing someone with a death note ignores their life span. My question is how that explains people who die because of the actions of people with death notes, or people who are at risk of being executed because of the death note. Can people's lifespans be changed simply because the death note enters their lives?
Draender

Can people's lifespans be changed simply because the death note enters their lives?
Because we never see someone's lifespan before the death note was already a part of their life, it appears that we'll never be certain.
One of the rules...
How to Use It XVIII (#18): An individual with the eye power of a god of death can tell the name and life span of other humans by looking at that person's face. By possessing the Death Note, an individual gains the ability to kill and stops being a victim. From this point, a person with the Death Note cannot see the life span of other Death Note owners, including him/herself. But, it is not really necessary for the individual to view the life span of him/herself nor other Death Note owners.
Suggests that a person's lifespan does not change when the death note enters their life because the influence of supernatural forces are not included in the lifespan and it stops being accurate.

If you really want to be spoiled: You'll see both Light as Kira and Ryuuku again, and plenty of them. Light will regain both the death note and his memories eventually. From there on, it gets pretty epic.

I was going to ask the question about what happens when the Death note is full, and someone said that there is a rule that the Death note will never run out of pages. Then, shouldn't the death notebook keep getting larger and larger? Or does it delete entries that are older than a certain date? Also, I was thinking that if it never runs out of pages, you could potentially make a whole library of Death notes by continuously tearing out pages from the original notebook and then rebinding them into separate books of 100 pages or so.
You could potentially do that, the details of how the book replenishes its pages are not known, however.

I was reading an article in the Independent where they said that Rush Hour 3 has been banned in China and this article also detailed other banned media. It specifically mentions Death Note, saying it was banned for '[promoting] death fantasies'. Is it true that Death Note was banned?
Here is a link to the article:
http://news.independent.co.uk/world/asia/article2846542.ece
I'm not sure if it was specifically banned, however there was plenty of controversy and I think the manga was banned in schools.

in the 3rd episode of deathnote the police inspector has extremely good pronounciation of the letter "L" i've heard that the letter "L" does not exist in the japanese language... if so, than how do the japanese voice-over artists reproduce this sound so very well? in other anime i've heard this consonant replaced with a soft "r" sound that somehow very closely resembles the "L" sound and I found this impressive. I am also a linguist registered with IPA and study different languages and I am only asking so that I can get better at pronouncing unfamiliar words myself =p
I didn't really notice the splendid pronunciation in episode 3, but they usually pronounce his name as "Eru" in the rest of the show.
I just finished this series. I still cannot figure out something. Why does it matter that Teru had Takana in the death note? Why did that ruin all hope for Light?

Light killed her just as Mikami was, but as it turned out the deaths were a minute apart. Once Near got both notes he noticed this and knew that at least one of the notes was real. Or something like that.

When Takano was killed by Mikami, Mikami had to visit the post office to retrieve and use his real Death Note. He was under constant supervision, and because his actions usually followed a strict pattern, his sudden visit to the post office two days in a row (he had paid some bills or something the day before) provoked some attention. His locker was picked, and revealed a second note, which led to Near discovering the possibility of Mikami's fake note.

When the death note is full, it's either the user stops writing on it, or the user asks for another note from the shinigami... you can read this in the chapter 0 of the manga...:)

i've only watched the anime, but i have a few questions about the ending, or rather what happened after the ending.
there's spoilers in my question so i marked it spoilers (i'm new here so i'm not sure if i'm supposed to do that...)
after Light died, what happened with his family (esp his sister, did she just spaz out for the rest of her life?), with all the agents, Misa, and the rest of the world, including Kira Nation. oh, and what happened with teh US pres?
Also, and what's up with Mello's sudden transition? he starts from an angry, violent, jealous @$$hole who manipulates the mafia and kidnaps innocents to further his agenda, then ends up sacrificing himself to help his rival Near catch Kira?? did i miss something?
all in all, i found the ending very dissapointing (kinda anit-climactical) and i felt like it should have had one more episode to tie everything up. and the last twelve episodes all seemed too rushed...i never got to know any of the new characters (near, mello, their agents, Takada, the American president, etc). i also found it kind of weird that Misa wasn't even in the ending...she just forgot about everything-how are they gonna explain why they killed light?

Nothing in particular happens to any of the people you've mentioned, except for Misa. The president is as I recall never mentioned, and the agents don't really do anything. Matsuda thinks that Near might have used the Death Note he acquired to manipulate Light, but that's about it.
As for Misa, she is shown in the final episode of Death Note, and you should be able to tell how things played out for her by her brief appearance.
Even in the anime, it is heavily implied that she kills herself. It is stated as a fact in the manga.
Mello was always a smart guy, he just let his competitive nature get the better of him, but showed his true colors in the end.

alright thanks a bunch, you solved most of my problems
but
Light's sister just stays unresponsive for life? that sucks! and i was wondering if the SPK made an international announcement that kira was dead, which would show if in actuality the world followed kira out of fear or devotion
I can't know if it's for life or not, but as I recall they don't mention her ever speaking again in the manga. In the manga, you also get to see a group of devoted followers of Kira in the aftermath, they all wear white robes and worship him in some mountainous area, led by some woman. The lady looks very similar to Misa, but unfortunately isn't. I'm not too sure about the announcement being made that Kira's deceased, I don't think they did, but you might have to check that out yourself to be sure.

lol maybe he just wanted to take a potshot at one of the SPKs, no matter who it was
Light deduced that Near would equal Nate, probably. He is a genius, after all. L's real name was L Lawliet, so there was a pattern of the real names resembling their nicknames. Even if he couldn't know for sure, it was a good bet, and his only shot at that.
how did L get Misa's death note near the end?

Ohba Tsugumi
Guy or girl? Anyone know.
Q1. The death note seems to know what time it is when your writing in it, like you could write dies 20 minutes from now, and it would work right? well what if you specified a time that could never come, but is within the 23 day limit?
like as an example say i wrote this in the death note:
John Doe, dies of a heart attack, John Doe dies of a heart attack 1 minute away for every minute from now, John Doe cannot be harmed until then
meaning that for every minute that passes the time of death is 1 minute away from that minute, so the time of death would always be 2 minutes away from the current time, it satisfies all the rules that im familiar with, except for the life rule of all humans , without exception, will die, but since the death note is controlling his actions (and the actions of others) anything harmful that could happen to him wont, and since the time of death is within 30 mins everything should work, making John Doe immortal (at the very least he would be invulnerable to other death notes forever) but im not sure, so what would happen if you were to write that in the death note
Q2. you can control the actions of others, like if you say someone dies in a traffic accident then someone has to drive into the person your killing, meaning youve just taken control of the actions of the person driving, the same goes for if you kill someone by stabbing, someone else has to stab them, so youve taken control of someone elses actions in order to stab the person your killing
couldnt you use this to circumvent the rule of "the deaths that cause the deaths of others result in heart attacks"
as an example lets say i wrote this in the death note:
John Doe, commits suicide with a gun, John Doe enters The Bank of America at 1:12pm on December 14th 2007, carrying a gun loaded with 1 bullet, demands all the money the bank has, the tellers begin filling bags with money from the safe after hitting the silent alarm while John Doe isnt looking, the police arrive at 1:32pm in response to the silent alarm, the police announce themselves and John Doe takes everyone in the bank as hostages, announcing that he will kill them if the police try anything, the police rush in, guns blazing, killing everyone but John Doe, John Does runs to the bathroom and shoots himself once in the head at 2:19pm
the police are the ones that killed everyone, not the person you are targeting, and their deaths werent directly related to John Does death, since John Doe committed suicide, so i dont think that rule would apply here, all you would have to do is make sure the person whos name you dont know and want to kill is in the bank between 1:12pm and 2:19 pm on that day
Q3. another question about controling peoples actions, this one is a way to get the eyes for free using someone else to kill someone whos name you dont know, and can only easily be explained through the use of an example death note entry:
John Doe, dies of a heart attack, Bob Smith gives possession of his death note to John Doe, keeping this page so Bob Smith can keep the memories of the death note, John Doe then makes the shinigami eye deal with (shinigamis name here), John Doe then goes to (address or the place that you know the person you want to kill is), John Doe writes the names of everyone he sees at that address on a sheet of normal paper and comes back to (address of bob smith's choosing here) John Doe returns ownership of the death note to Bob Smith, John Does dies of a heart attack 5 days later
in this example you would be bob smith and once you get all the names all you have to do is kill everyone that John Doe wrote down, one of them would be the person you really want to kill, Light couldve used this in the story to find out L's real name by using his father, or anyone on that investiagation team (replace bob smith with Light, john doe with Light's father, and use the address and room number of the hotel they would meet in that week, lights father would get everyones names in that room, and the only name he doesnt know would be L's, thats what i wouldve done right away)
so i guess this is 2 questions, 1. is it possible to use the death notes powers in the conditions of the death (like the eyes, and the passing of ownership, not using it to kill people since that violates the "deaths that cause the deaths of others will result in heart attacks" rule) and 2. why didnt Light think of doing this right away, it seems so obvious, and the easiest way to get L's name
Q4. shinigamis can be killed by saving someone they care about by using the note to prevent that persons death, what if you use the note to force a shinigami to care about someone then try to kill that person, it doesnt say anywhere that you cant control a shinigamis actions using the note, it just says you cant kill a shinigami with the note (afaik, i might be wrong), which means you could write something like this in the death note:
Jane Doe, dies from stab wounds, Jane Doe falls in love with Ryuk, Ryuk returns her love, Jane Doe is stabbed to death soon after Ryuk confesses his love for her
in this example you would have to touch jane with part of the death note before hand so she could see ryuk (im only using ryuk as an example here so dont come here saying ryuk would never do this, replace Ryuks name with that of any shinigami), Ryuk would undoubtedly save jane (since the note is controling him), killing himself in the process, although this does technically end up violating the "deaths that cause the deaths of others end up as heat attacks" rule, but since jane wont actually die it should still work
Q5. what if you have twins with the same name, and the same face, how would the death note deal with people like this, i assume it would it kill both of them when you wrote the name of 1 and pictured his face, since they are exactly the same
Q6. After Light escaped Yellow Box warehouse, why didnt he write Nate's name (and the rest of them) on the piece of the note he had, im pretty sure he still had it with him after he was shot, and why would Nate tell them not to go after him, why wasnt he afraid that he might have more pieces of the death note on him, if he had written the names down, he couldve gone back to the warehouse, gotten the real death note and called an ambulance, later he couldve claimed he survived an attack by kira and one of his crazy followers and continued being kira, i dont think ryuk wouldve used his note to kill him had he done this (thats how i was hoping it would end) (Light and Misa living happily in Lights new world is what i really wanted)
Thats all the questions I have for now, the anime was great (just finished watching it yesterday, and started reading the manga today), and ill watch the movies after L comes out in 2008 (thats the one i really want to see)
P.S. this is my first post so id just like to say "Hi everyone, death note rocks :D", and also id like to apologize for the length of my first post, i had alot to say/ask and since its all related i figured 1 post was all that was necessary

Q1-3: Heart attack. Any time you try to get too cute and do too much beyond the rules, the victim gets a heart attack and everything is voided.
Q3: The deal for the shinigami's eyes needs to be of someone's own free will, so the victim simply dies of a heart attack.
Q4: The Death Note only works on humans. You cannot kill a shinigami with one.
Q5: Okay, this question is somewhat interesting. The answer is not really contained in the show so you'd have to speculate.
Q6:
Q6: Light Lost. That single fact was more important than his life. Besides the mental shock that caused him he was also in a great deal of physical shock from being shot. The blood loss would have killed him in a little while longer if nobody took him to the hospital. Besides that, Ryuk killed him before he could manage to deal with the situation.
That's lots of reasons for what happened at the end.
Q1-3: Heart attack. Any time you try to get too cute and do too much beyond the rules, the victim gets a heart attack and everything is voided.
yeah that makes sense, anything not covered by the rules explicitly, but has a chance to break one of them, would default to a heart attack
Q3: The deal for the shinigami's eyes needs to be of someone's own free will, so the victim simply dies of a heart attack.
i see, i didnt know it had to be choosen by free will, i thought the owner only needed to say he wanted to trade
Q4: The Death Note only works on humans. You cannot kill a shinigami with one.
i wasn't using it to kill a shinigami, i was using it to control a shinigami's actions, by using the death note to make a shinigami love a human, then by attempting to kill that human, the shinigami would save that human since the death note is making that shinigami love that human, resulting in the death of that shinigami
i guess the rule means none of the death notes powers work on shinigamis, including the controlling of actions (the way its stated it only seems to include using it to kill one), i was trying to think of a way for a human to kill a shinigami at will, that was the only scenario i could come up with that seemed like it might work
Q5: Okay, this question is somewhat interesting. The answer is not really contained in the show so you'd have to speculate.
this one bothered me right from the beginning of the show, i was hoping the manga would answer it, or maybe the creators had something to say on it in, but oh well

i know the show ended the way it did because any other ending wouldnt have had the same effect, but think about it from Near's perspective, he knows Light could still have a piece of the death note, and yet tells the guys not to go after him, it didnt make sense to me, sure his wounds would kill him, but he could still manage to write your names down before hand, its not like Near knew Ryuk was going to kill him, Near may have known about Light's mental shock, by the way Light was acting, but why take the chance by letting him go, plus Light had enough time to walk to another warehouse (these warehouses usually arent that close together), so Ryuk didnt kill him right away, it seemed like he had plenty of time to deal with the situation, i guess the whole mental shock thing for why he didnt go right for the note once he escaped makes sense, while watching the episode, during the part starting from where Teru kills himself i was thinking Light realized Teru killed himself to distract them so he could escape and then use the note once outside (while watching it i didnt know there was 37 episodes before hand, and thought that this one couldnt be the last), i was really surprised when he didnt use it, and even more surprised when he died (i figured he would die at the end, but, like i said, while watching it i didnt know it was the last episode until this point)
Thanks for your answers, and I wish there was more death note

The Note can only control the actions of someone that it is going to kill. If the Note isn't killing someone, then it cannot control their actions at all.
It certainly does not say that the note cannot be used to control Shinigami, but it cannot kill a Shinigami so the Note never gets a chance to control them.

I have a question on the ending:
It states ALL humans must die and they ALL go to Mu (that being, nothingness). Ultimately, what one does in life does not matter. Light dies unpunished and L dies unrewarded. The whole scope of the character's actions can only be as big as to do good/evil in their immediate world. Am I looking at this correctly? Ryuk even mentions this earlier in the series where he refers to the idea of souls as "some human fantasy". This enforces the idea of Mu but is immediately confusing when Ryuk informs Light that BECAUSE of Light using the Death Note he can not go to either Heaven or Hell. I thought the ending to the was sad but that last rule of the Death Note really made me resent the series.
NoSanninWa
2007-11-14, 02:42
Ryuk made that rule about not going to Heaven or Hell just to mess with the book's owner. Really. Since he believes that no humans go to Heaven or Hell it is technically true, but he was playing around.
Incidently I don't think that shinigami really know anything about Heaven or Hell or souls. They only kill people, the next world is just as much a mystery to them as to humans. Just because they cannot see souls does not prove that there is no such thing. They are just as incapable as humans of seeing or knowing such a thing. It is ultimately left to the viewer to believe in Mu or an afterlife as they see fit.

Goodness! Thank you for the quick reply. I can imagine that because Shinigami have an exceptionally depressing lifestyle, so there is at least a possibility they would construct ideas such as Mu to make themselves feel at least a bit better about their own existence. I'm still very much undecided but I'd like to argue the previous point simply because the ending would be less unsettling.
Q: How do the Shinigami know there is no Heaven or Hell?
Q: Could Ryuk have been lying or not know for a fact that there is no Heaven or Hell?
Q: Who created the Shinigami, and what is their purpose?

Shinigami exist solely to take the lives of humans. Supposedly there's a Shinigami king somewhere. The rules are what say that there is no Heaven or Hell.

Question: How did Mikami die???
Question: How did Mikami die???
In the Manga, Mikami commited suicide about ten days after Light was killed by Ryuk.
In the Anime, he purposely stuck a pen down his throat or something to distract everyone to help Light escape. (I'm probably wrong......or maybe not idk)
Mikami did stab himself with the pen, he stabbed at his wrist, though, not his throat. It's arguable that he did it to allow Light to escape, but my take on it is that he did it out of desperation, as I've articulated in some earlier posts in this thread.

Q1: In the episode father, which I believe is episode #29, I am getting the impression that there are three Death Notes floating around. Mello and his gang have one that was given to them as a trade for lights sister, which was Ryuk's, and misa has hers, which was Rems, but there is a scene where Light is giving up ownership of a note, which is said to be Ryuk's, and holds on to Misa's to not loose his memory, but how does light still have a note, which is said to be ryuks, if Mello and his gang have it. When do Light and Kiyomi become bf & gf and does she ever know he is Kira?
That bimbo?
The bubble head that doesn't even have the common sense to grasp even Kira's simplistic high-school god-complexed ideology? The fool who didn't even have enough sense to *not* declare the existence of her "eyes" and "Shinigami" over national television?
Hopefully never. Light is wayyy out of her league. And that's really saying something considering that Light is essentially unlikeable.
I can however predict that the girl is a tool and that Light is very apt at making use of tools. Insofar as a relationship can exist, Light will make very good use of this convenient *erherm* tool. She has the eyes after all.
Wait. . .nevermind, I hope that doesn't happen either. . .

You're talking about Misa, it seems.
Light does reveal his identity to Kiyomi at some point, but not initially.
another question:
just want to clarify if Misa did jump from that building during the final episode..... and if it is true, then is the reason because of Light's death?

Misa didn't actually jump from the building in the anime, but in the manga it's explained that she does indeed kill herself a year after Light's death. She first becomes depressed and despaired, so it's fair to say she did it because of Light's demise.

You're talking about Misa, it seems.
Light does reveal his identity to Kiyomi at some point, but not initially.
Wait? So there's another girl in Light's life?

Yeah she's the new spokeswoman for Kira after Mikami kills the original, she was one of Light's friends back in high school, she does die though when both Mikami and Light tell her to kill herself with a fire via Death Note.

the reason for Light's loss to Near . . .
nothing just want to add that :]

Just for a note...her name was Tadaka

Erm, well, her name is Kiyomi Takada, just depends on whether you'd want to address her by her surname or her given name.

Hey, this is my first post. I have questions.
(Possible spoilers for ep 9-14 -15)
Question 1:
Ryuk is always hanging around with both L and Light. Why did Light even need to ask Rem to kill L? Couldn’t Light have just asked Ryuk nicely to tell him what name appears over Ryuzaki’s head everytime he looks at him with his shinigami eyes?
Light: “I’ve won! Misa will be able to see L’s real name!”
…all this time, couldn’t Ryuk just see it?
Question 2:
Does L shave his eyebrows? I noticed that he doesn’t have any. Kind of like the Mona Lisa; completely lacking eyebrows. Perhaps he shaves frequently, including his eyebrows, because he doesn’t seem to have any 5o’clock shadow despite staying awake all night watching footage.
Question 3:
So far in the series (I’ve only seen upto ep15) I haven’t noticed a single person smoking a cigarette. Why is this? Because it’s a bad influence? I think it would add to L’s character if he smoked, and held his cigarettes with two fingers. ;) But maybe he's too smart for a bad habbit like that.
Question 4:
L, do you know?
Gods of death
Love apples
Have red hands
(In the english dub) When L tries to trip-up Light during his deductive reasoning test, he adds a fourth Kira letter that reads “Have Red Hands.” He claims the full message was “Gods of death who love apples have red hands.” Where'd the ‘who’ come from?
Why didn’t Light mention anything about there not being a “who” in the second letter?
Is it because of the dubbing?
Answers appreciated.
Oh yeah, and please don’t spoil anything for me. I’ve only seen upto episode 15. If you spoil it, I’ll have a heart attack.
