It's hosted on Photobucket which automatically reduces the resolution of images to be 800x600 or less to keep the brandwidth down.

Now if you mean the 'drawing quality,' I'm going to have disagree with you there. The colors of their attacks have a nice blending to it and the parts that overlap between the colliding beams is nice. Look closer and you can see quite a bit of detail was put into their outfits: all the triangle-pieces on Nanoha's Barrier Jacket, the ruffels and wrinkles on Marisa (?)'s apron and dress. Not to mention the clothing is drawn in a way to depict movement from the rush of opposing air from the attacks rather than being in a static arrangement. Body proportions also look to be pretty good. Nope, I see a well drawn image here :D

@Evil Rick: Well, it is special because it's a Nanoha/Touhou crossover pic, and a Master Spark VS Starlight Breaker pic at that. Brilliant for us Touhou freaks, so it's just us - if you ain't know nothin' 'bout Touhou, it ain't none of yer beeswax, 'kay?

And anyway, when looking at a piece of art, as an artist one should be considering what one can take away from it and critque it in a way that's actually useful, rather than merely 1) fangirl/boy/whatevering over it, or 2) disparaging it. That's just unsavoury, even if you were as good as Michelangelo, which I doubt anyone here would boast to be. Even the masters used reference pictures.

Alright, now, the main meat of the post:

Firstly, we don't really have that much data on what the Touhou girls look like, only the work of skilled, experienced artists who are way hell out of the league of a lot of people. For all you heck know, the appearance could straddle the distance between a loli and a shoujo on any given place in the spectrum. In that sense, I don't really see too much problem with her arms being short.

Secondly, I don't see how "something drawn by a ten-year-old" isn't already a demeaning statement. Lots of people live down seven times that number of years without being able to reproduce anything of that standard; so, then, may I kindly ask, what are they if this person is the artistic equivalent of a 'ten year old'? I think that in posting comments for pictures, one should post as if the artist were present, and in this case, I believe a "needs a little more practice" followed by a list of credits and cons would've been more appropriate rather than a quip, no matter how innocently intended.

Lastly, I do see some place for credit on this picture that more than likely outweighs the obvious structural errors. In truth, I don't think a ribbon here and something there is the most important thing in art, especially of this sort. The basic main skills required by a fanart are, by and large, are actually there, albeit in a form that needs quite a bit more practice (If you're out there dude, I'm talkin' to ya - keep practicing! ;)): Sure, the digital whatnot is more than a little faulty, I'll grant you that, but otherwise it's a fair imitation, amateur though it is, spoiled only (and only, I emphasize) by the fact that the artist took the trouble to color it as well.

As I would say, there's fanart, and then there's fanart.

Yes, it does sound marginally better now. I would argue, of course, that LQ isn't really an anomaly around here, though that's irrelevant to our discussion.

I'm sorry if I made it sound like I thought that vague definitions = it's okay to draw proportion funny. I was probably thinking too much on the lines of "well, it's an amateur piece", so I suppose I dropped my...(if I may be so bold as to use the term) standards unconsciously back there. Funny how we both said rather silly things under the influence of some reactionary backlash thought-process, mmm?

Anyway, I don't remember saying being a crossover raised its artistic quality; I just said it's rare, and therefore has explanatory power in rationalizing why some Touhou-infested denizens of ASNanoha raised a REDTEXT spam over it. (As a matter of fact, I believe this is exactly the phenomenon that sparked Rick's response, and thereby this whole sidetrack in the first place.)

Um hum...on second glance, the lower half of her face is indeed kinda messed. And their expressions aren't intense enough. And the skirts are flying the wrong way. And- Alright, thanks for the reminder, Sol; I really am becoming a little too rusty in my art critiques. Long story short: It's not the quality, it's the content. Marissa has been compared to Nanoha ever since Nanoha's creation, as the two share the same 'proving my friendship through superior firepower' motto, which has led to Marissa being called Nanoha's teacher on more then one ocasion.

And anyway, when looking at a piece of art, as an artist one should be considering what one can take away from it and critque it in a way that's actually useful, rather than merely 1) fangirl/boy/whatevering over it, or 2) disparaging it. That's just unsavoury, even if you were as good as Michelangelo, which I doubt anyone here would boast to be. Even the masters used reference pictures.

Firstly, we don't really have that much data on what the Touhou girls look like, only the work of skilled, experienced artists who are way hell out of the league of a lot of people. For all you heck know, the appearance could straddle the distance between a loli and a shoujo on any given place in the spectrum. In that sense, I don't really see too much problem with her arms being short.

Secondly, I don't see how "something drawn by a ten-year-old" isn't already a demeaning statement. Lots of people live down seven times that number of years without being able to reproduce anything of that standard; so, then, may I kindly ask, what are they if this person is the artistic equivalent of a 'ten year old'? I think that in posting comments for pictures, one should post as if the artist were present, and in this case, I believe a "needs a little more practice" followed by a list of credits and cons would've been more appropriate rather than a quip, no matter how innocently intended.

Lastly, I do see some place for credit on this picture that more than likely outweighs the obvious structural errors. In truth, I don't think a ribbon here and something there is the most important thing in art, especially of this sort. The basic main skills required by a fanart are, by and large, are actually there, albeit in a form that needs quite a bit more practice (If you're out there dude, I'm talkin' to ya - keep practicing! ;)): Sure, the digital whatnot is more than a little faulty, I'll grant you that, but otherwise it's a fair imitation, amateur though it is, spoiled only (and only, I emphasize) by the fact that the artist took the trouble to color it as well.

As I would say, there's fanart, and then there's fanart.

Granted, the "ten year old" statement was a little harsh, and probably a by-product of my disbelief at the fiery defence for an inferior image (especially one posted in a thread with so many high quality images). Still, the fact that it illustrates a crossover does not magically raise its artistic quality, nor would I argue that Touhou characters having vaguely defined designs make poor proportions any more pleasing to the eye.

Since it is an amateur drawing, of course its low quality can be excused, and for what it's worth, I do think the detailed outfits look pretty authentic and I'm sure the artist will improve much with more experience. But I think you're giving him too much credit by saying the colouring job is the only part that subtracts from his work. Seriously, Nanoha's face needs a lot of work.

Long story short: It's not the quality, it's the content. Marissa has been compared to Nanoha ever since Nanoha's creation, as the two share the same 'proving my friendship through superior firepower' motto, which has led to Marissa being called Nanoha's teacher on more then one ocasion.

Master versus student... rarely does the balance go against the master.

I actually think that's one of the reasons people shot to its defense. Your art is... not among the greatest, so when people where being happy about the image and suddenly you come and and call it a low quality image without any constructive comment following it (not to mention that we hadn't been discussing the quality of the image to begin with, thus rendering your comment somewhat odd) it made people go *snap* "Well, it's not like you're one to talk!"

Truth be told, even I had a feeling of "Yee, looks like Rick's jealous that we like a low quality image while we don't fawn over his." running through me. Because you commented on the quality rather then the content, which is what we were giddy about, it made your reaction appear to be made out of jealousy.

In an extension to Keroko's comment, we never once claimed that it wasn't drawn by a ten-year old (I wonder how old is the artist) or that the image's quality was better than a ten-year old's.

To be fair, the picture is good not because the drawing is as beautiful as Picasso's, but because of its strong imagery of what we (those in the OC thread) have long discussed of the possible fight between Nanoha and Marisa (in such an epic way). Quality-wise, he should be credited for his attempt even if it was, at best, to most people, an amateur's drawing.

And personally, his points went up several notches on my scales simply for the merit of being humble. Jealousy is a wayward friend.

Low quality is only half the reason, the other half is that you tend to draw grotesque monsters and other horrors. Most of us aren't really interested in that. Not in combination with the Nanohaverse anyway. People tend not to comment on things they don't like, and 'Nanoha + creatures of horror' is one such thing for most.

The Nanoha VS Marissa image attracted attention because several people among us like Touhou, so an image combining the two is like Win + Win for those.

Try drawing something else, like, say... Nanoha cosplaying as Lina Inverse? That might attract more attention.

Pulling it out I have... number, 3115 of 5000. Blue marker, signed by Tsukasa Kotobuki, character designer himself. I figured that on top of being a good series to have (which I was NOT dissappointed), the limited edition and signature would also improve it's collector's value. And skimming Amazon, there are... 3 new, 2 used, and 2 collectable, averaging in the 160 range with the collectables right at the market suggested price of 199.99. A little down from what I paid, but give it another ten years and it'll probably climb back up as 'surviving' sets become more rare. 90 bucks! That is a deal (pity I'm saving my money atm). It wouldn't have to be a collectors set for me to want that kind of deal. I once paid 140$ for a box set of R.O.D the TV and that was only 26 episodes.

Well, I guess that shows how much we love Erio Inoue Marina because her birthday was on the 20th. Makino Yui was on the 19th, but she has no connection to the Nanoha series. Nor does Paku Romi, for that matter....

And on another somewhat unrelated note, Mizuki Nana finally got a #1 spot on the Oricon chart, though if it'll stay that way for the weekly bit is something I really doubt.

I think we're still receiving an average of at least 1 NanoFate fanart daily each week, so I suppose Nina is referring to outstanding works. With which I must agree, since after the lots of NanoFate we see is not so easy to find something that can reach certain level differentiation due to its concept, realization, style, or quality.

With which I must agree, since after the lots of NanoFate we see is not so easy to find something that can reach certain level differentiation due to its concept, realization, style, or quality.

It depends on the fans but I mean... Look at any fandom with males in it. How many yaoi crack pairs do you see in comparison to the yuri ones? :uhoh:

It depends of the fan I think, but it happens with some of the Nanoha fans too. Speaking of fanfiction, probably your average Nanoha fan will just consider NanoFate and sometimes SubaTea as well in their fics as a plot device or as something central if it's about romance, while sometimes you may read a fic made by someone proclaimed as a "yuri fan" and find 3 or 4 yuri couples from this series at the same time. But it's not like that happens too often and with everyone who likes the genre, but personally this is something that I don't like because it seems forced (even if the series makes you think that everyone is a lesbian xD) (Some people says that Caro is too little and is still confused with Erio xD)

Er, Nanoha official art is very distinct. Just look at the face proportions, especially the size and how they do their eyes, of any official Nanoha art and compare it with very similar fanart. I still lol at how huge their eyes are when they're adults, ugh.
