Just wanted to know what do people think by having voice chat conversations between the staff while fansubbing. Do you think it'll improve or speed up the rate of the release or not? Any thoughts are appreciated:D Thanks

It would have no effect if not a negative effect. There is almost nothing in fansubbing that requires voice conversation beside telling someone that they should start something if you are on a deadline or timed shceduled. It would only hinder most jobs. Everything else can be handed by IRC or IM.

in Megami-Anime well the top level staff is real close so we have each others cell numbers. (we all use the same service so long distance is free) we also use skype to talk. Does it speed things up yah a little but thats not really that noticible. What it does is lower the error rate. I encode and dont have internet in the house. So when i run across a tl error i call the translator. If i need the karaoke on the ftp before i get there. I call and everything is ready by the time i get there. Since we communicate so well and a alot. (i use outrageous minutes. its a good thing the caals are free). We usually dont really even talk about fansubbing so much. About school, anime, and other things, we have no deadlines, but thre is a thing such as to long. Vocal communication should be saved only if it is really needed and desired. Of the 15-20 people in our group only 3 of us share numbers.

I can comment on this. Live-eviL members can use voice chat to converse with the pig. The prefered program is Skype. Even non-members can Skype the pig to ask when [a show] will be released, the status of a [release], or if the group will pick up [a new show] (as outlined in his duties). As detailed in the forum thread: http://forum.live-evil.org/index.php/topic,1067.0.html

Likewise the pig uses it to converse with his own aides including the internet polling firm, astrologer, and feng-shui master. We prefer skype over 'digital phone' b'cos skype with no monthly fee as long as you call other skype users. Other than this, voice chat isn't very common b'cos most people can type just fine and voice would therefore be inefficient. Likewise voice pretty much requires that people are there at the same time and many people can write english better than speak it. But for the pig, it is a necessity b'cos pigs cant, or don't care to, type.

We've used Ventrilo before to run through scripts. It's very useful for running through in tandem with an editor and a translator.

Some groups like DB have their staff meet up IN PERSON for a conference for a release.

I don't think voice chat would really have a positive effect on anything... However, I can see how having cell phone numbers so you can send SMS messages to other group members could be a benefit. That way they'll know if something's waiting for them at home (or know to get off the ****ing MMO and do some subbing).
