The show is based on a manga by Kimura Tahiko that is serialized in Gangan Wing. Hopefully NeoSam will provide the covers when he sees the thread, otherwise I'll be spamming his PM! The director for the seires is going to be Kishi Seiji (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=22227). Seto San will be voiced by Momoi Haruko (Halko) (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=5595) while Michishio Nagasumi will be voiced by Mizushima Takahiro (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=9815). From the synopsis of the story, it does sound interesting. Here is the synopsis in the following taken from AniDB (http://anidb.info/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=4821):

Nagasumi visits his grandmother near the sea during the summer. While visiting, he goes for a swim, and drowns right after entering the water. Fortunately for him he is saved by a young mermaid. Later as he tells the story to his family, a young girl named San appears at his home and begs Nagasumi to marry her.

She’s followed by two large thugs and they take both him and his parents to San`s home under the sea. If that wasn’t strange enough, it turns out San`s parents are mob bosses. Nagasumi is left with the choice of either death or marrying San. He chooses to marry a mermaid.

This would likely be that, except San`s father and some members of the mob are not exactly thrilled to have Nagasumi courting San and are determined to bring an end to their relationship--or him. And there is also the matter of keeping it a secret that San is a mermaid.

It's pretty interesting: bishoujo > moe > loli. I'm happy the anime will use the initial designs though...at least more like in the middle. I only read the first two volumes of the manga, so can anyone tell me if most of this series becomes more comedic or more dark? Or more about romance?

I'm having trouble picturing her voice as Seto-chan...I always associate Halko with Nakahara Komugi, and that is just NOT what I'd imagined Seto sounding like. Still looking forward to seeing the anime though, since the manga had me laughing out loud.

The character designs look a little different than what I remembered being up before, but they're not bad...just six more days, this is definitely one where I'll watch the raw (and hopefully in spite of being Japanese-impaired it'll be close enough to the manga I'll be able to follow it OK).

I had thought a lot of these people were pushed out of the industry in favour of younger and more photogenic Seiyuu. Glad to see the likes of Bin Shimada back along with the return of Kazuki Yao (Dancouga Nova) and others. I figure they may have gone into hiding for a while since there was really not much for them to do.

My friend has some age-old grudge against this series because it apparentely replaced his all-time favourite manga My Name is Zushio after it got canceled. He claims this was made in order to deliberately tank in order for the magazine to give the author no recourse but to continue Zushio, which apparentely was what he was REALLY intersted in doing. I doubt there's much truth to this buts its funny to mention Seto No Hanayome to him and here him mumble "Stupid Mermaid".

Looks good so far--at least as far as I can tell from a short clip, it seems to capture the insanity of the manga pretty well. Halko's voice as San is going to take a little getting used to for me, but it fit better than I thought it would. Thanks for the link to the clip!

I read the scanlated manga up to the latest within the last few hours.

This manga is crazy. As in the funny way. :D I can recongnize nearly every cliche moment in the story, but they don't get in the way, and that makes the story a hit for me in summary. I look forward to the anime. :)

I just watched it, although I know very little Japanese so I'm sure I missed a lot--but I like what I've seen so far. Halko did a good job as San, I was afraid her voice would remind me too much of Komugi-chan, but she's changed it up enough that it seems to fit San pretty well. The overall style reminds me a lot of Happy Lesson, with the main character running for his life most of the time. It also seemed to stick to the manga storyline pretty well--Masu was just as funny as he was in the manga (especially the classic CPR moment), and the scene with San's speech amid the falling cherry blossoms was well done too, just how I'd pictured it from the manga. There are lots of SD scenes, which generally cracked me up and I think helped give it the same feel as the manga too. Omni has a review with screencaps up already, although by the time I finish typing this, he'll probably have posted this link himself :)

It started off really good. I loved the conversation with the mother and grandmother (at the father and son's expense). The father was a bit hyper, but I thought that would calm down.

However, once the Yakuza portion started the show began to get hyper. Not just a little hyper either- it was like being yelled at for 20 minutes straight. If the rest of the series is like this, I don't know if I'll be able to follow this show. I hope it calms down a little bit.

It started slow, for me. I just loathed the boy's father and the father's voice. I did enjoy the scenes at grandma's house more. But once we got underwater, it was totally hilarious. I didn't mind the breakneck pace, after I got used to it. One hopes they vary the pace and tone, though, of course. I think Momoi Halko is doing very well, and I think Miyate Kenta (Orlando in Pumpkin Scissors) is just outstanding as the mermaid's father. The craaazy animation bits were great, too.

Oh yeah, before anyone asks, "A ninkyo love comedy" is a pun on the term "Ninkyo" which denotes a film that protrays the Yakuza, in pactualr it's protagonist, in a positive light.

This was so over the top, it's like the voice actors were given the permission to scream their lungs off if they wished and fotunately, only one of them took the invitation. :heh: These voice actors were really having fun. I just couldn't help but join in the laugh. The potential romance in the future also gives hope that perhaps the show isn't angling toward which VA-can-scream-louder contest. It was really sweet when...

Michishio asks for Seto's hand to her father, Seto just looked so cute. Of course, the moment was ruined as soon as Seto's father recovered from the shock. :heh:
So yeah, I'm with Srin in hoping things will calm down enough to squeeze in a bit of romance in every episode or so.

I checked out the manga after being piqued by the first episode and OMG! I haven't laughed this hard since "FMP! Fumoffu!" Even if the anime fails to live up to its' source material, I have found something worthwhile to add to my reading collection. :)

Except it is being played for laughs in SnH. :heh: They're not taking it "seriously". I'm no BL-fan, but I still found the pseudo-BL humour in SnH hysterically hilarious. The way they exaggerate it, you can't take it seriously. :heh:

Honestly speaking, when it comes to comedy, SnH thrilled my funny-bone more than Hayate no Gotoku. :D SnH has a lot of physical comedy which is usually hard to pull off constantly, but the comic timing is just nothing short of brilliant.

OMG, episode 2 was downright fucking hilarious. I've had the best 25 minutes of WTF humour since goddamn Dokuro-chan. This series is heading towards becoming the most underrated series of Spring 2007, since the thread only got 5 pages after 2 raws (whereas Hayate no Gotoku, terribly overrated IMO, got 14 after 1 sub and 2 raws!).

lol.. True! This shows attractive quality is the romance even though it is one sided at the moment just because the girl brings crazy parents as baggage. HnG is just silly from as much as I could see in the 2 episodes aired so far. For me, both of these show are equally enjoyable on their own merit. Perhaps, this thread will get a lot of post count once there is a sub for it? Who knows. Either way, post count never really measures the quality of any show. All that matters is if one enjoys a particular show or not. :cool:

Well, I was hoping to watch the raw of episode 2 yesterday, but can't yet.

Anyway, I'm a fan of the manga and listen to the drama cds mention here. I watched the raw of the first episode and I believe that episode was very well done. The seiyuu did a good job and it's just liked how the Drama CD cast. The CPR scene just made me laugh out loud that I had watched it a few times again. lol.

The only thing that I think I'm going to have to get used to... was the background music of San's speech surrounded by falling cherry blossoms (if the repeat the same music at very speech she makes). That music was a bit of a bother to me. Everything esle on that same scene was wonderful. I liked the OP and ED pretty good too.

So, the dad is reminiscing about those sweet moments with his kawaii daughter. It pains him to no end to think an idiot will now take her away from him. Oh, the anguish. Suddenly someone throws a picture of Nagasumi on the wall and sticks it. Then comes the projectiles that shreds a million holes in the picture. A huge waiting shadow on the door. The dad finally sees a ray of hope.

In that day, Nagasumi's parents tell him they will be going back. It's Nagasumi's job to break the news to San with a heavy heart. He decides to tell her on his date in the beach. Enter Maki! She is the definition of sweetness, and portable enough to fit in the palm of a normal human/mermaid hand.

She is the most vicious, bite-size spunky body guard I've ever come to witness in my anime watching experience. Masa-san, the one who raises Nagasumi's palpitation just by a mere mention of his name, warns Nagasumi to watch out for himself. The scope of that statement is made clear through out the remaining 12 minutes of this episode.

This episode makes it clear that this show is indeed a very good one.

back to her muko's hometown without her gokudou family all around, but I guess thats not going to happen, as maki and her dad have hitched a ride as well....I guess I'll follow it to see what happens anyway :)

Hmm... I wouldn't use "hyper" to describe Maki's role in Seto no Hanayome(SnH). It is more about her bi-polar personality, and how Nagasumi tries in vain to show other people her dark side. Kinda like a moe version of Chucky. :heh:

We only have San involved in the feud between Maki and Nagasumi in Ep03, so you will see what I mean next episode. ;)

Once Ep04 airs, there will be a scene that neatly summarises what SnH is all about.

One of the great things about this anime adaptation, is that they have expanded on the material and tightened the pacing. :)

If I remember correctly, those water cutter in factory can cut metal with ease. [although the pencil sized stream need to do at mach 3 for it's cutting function]

So I assume Maki's shell contains a uber water compressor /w machine gun type reloading function water tank for it awesomeness, talk about compactness of Japanese product here.[The power source of that gun is another topic.:p ]

At the end of ep3, San's dad climbing outside a bullet train running at some 270km/h is a crazy stunt. He will simply get killed by the wind pressure alone, blown into pieces at best.

Back to topic, do anyone know there is a slight censoring on blood, by replacing reddish blood with shining white liquid? :heh:

I'm still getting around to Lovely Complex. I'm so overwhelmed by this new season and I've only watched about 65% of the new shows that have come out so far. :heh: Lovely Complex is one of the better show I've anticipated for this season.

VLC should be considered as the last resort option for .MKV files. The softsub support in it is subpar (amongst other user-unfriendly stuff). If you ask around in the Playback Help Forum (http://forums.animesuki.com/forumdisplay.php?f=23), you will find that the fansubbers highly recommend that people use the CCCP package (http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?t=27313) to play .MKV files.

The first three episodes can be considered to be the "Prologue" of this series (remember, we are not in Nagasumi's hometown). Ep04 is where the meat of the story will start.

Totally accepted..i feel this is one of the underrated animes of this season. The promo pic had me confused makin me think that it was a violent anime, but the episode caught me totally off guard...more over the OP is totally kakkoi.

I'm quite surprised about something though,
They have decided to remove Mrs Seto's predatory/seductive behaviour towards Nagasumi. I wonder if this is due to censorship or something else. :heh:
Regardless, one thing I like about the male protagonist is that he is actually "unnaturally" strong. Nagasumi is often portrayed to be in a submissive position, but when the last straw breaks, he WILL go loco and beat the tar out of whoever is tormenting him.

Only as a last resort of course (ergo, when it is literally do or DIE). By default, Nagasumi prefers the "peaceful" solution, something which seldom happens. :heh:

Of course we have the typical "girl being serious about this, the guy not realizing and hurting her feelings in the process, only to realize at the end". Well, at the end of the ep it seemed like San's dad is a bit more approving of the whole ordeal.

Overall it is cliched and all, but it makes me laugh like no tomorrow. Definitely sticking with it, and i hope they can maintain the overall level of humor :)

Yeah that second episode was hilarious. The food stalls really were great. Though if I was Nagasumi I would be careful considering the guy running the gun stall. Something about San eating giant treats was interesting to watch.

This show really has been fun to watch. San really has that chivilry stuff down be it saving goldfish or searching for rings. While Nagasumi is one of the more level headed people, survival is going to be tough. Though if he can flip an attack shark and just survive two sonic blasts he might have a shot.

Wonder how far they will take this San-Nagasumi-Masa thing. The struggle against the one who took Nagasumi's 'first kiss'

I've watched 3 eps (currenty watching 4th) and this series is great. The "crazy-marriage plot" is one of the biggest cliches in anime, and the last time I enjoyed watching one like this is Ranma (and that's long ago!). But this one manages to make it good again. A really funny series, can't wait to get more.

The main character remembers me of Hale, (from Hale+Guu): he's the only sane person with everyone around him going nuts. The formula is not new, but works very well.

BTW, I read the first chapters of the manga. The anime makes up stuff and does some slight changes... for the better.

Edit: Just watched ep 4. For those who worried about the serie's quality decreasing after a couple of eps... don't worry anymore :)
Also, this is the first time Gonzo is producing so wacky anime, isn't it? I was wondering how well they would fare, since most of their series were all too serious (either action of drama) but looks like they are doing really well.

Started watching this and HnG at the same time, here are my impressions:

At the beginning(aka Ep. 1), I kinda wish the two can balance each other out a bit: SnH needs to calm down, while HnG can use more hype and exaggeration.

But overall I liked SnH better, aside from it made me lol more, Yakuza/Gangster is a big plus for me personally while Loli factor in HnG is quite a minus(never interested in seeing 13 years old[this time literally] in so called "romance" series)

However, now I'm at Ep. 4 of both, I'm leaning more towards HnG. The crazy parodies and 4th wall breaking in HnG start kicking in, making it whole lot funnier for a semi-otaku like me (And no, those "censorships" are intended jokes)

On the other hand, SnH is showing signs of slipping into one of those cliche Harem series I personally hate.

I'm gonna stick with both for another while, but for the moment I'm lowering my expectation for SnH.

Worry not. Unless the anime takes a drastic turn, SnH is just a "triangle" at worst. Between SnH and HnG, it is HnG that has the "harem" element, although it doesn't really go that way... in the way most "harem" detractors are thinking.

There is one scene in Ep04 which neatly sums up what SnH is all about. ;)

There's nothing left for me to say about the show, everyone just summed it all. But it sure made me laugh for good, more than this season's comedy anime. And especially the plot, a mermaid yakuza bride, now that's something you don't see everyday. Really looking forward to this series and I hope it could be 24 ep long.

I was deceived by this, too. The promotional picture caught my attention, plus the fact that it was done by Gonzo. But after watching a couple of captures in the official site, plus the fact that no group was subbing it after a couple of weeks of airing, made me think that the series was no good.

I guess that all fansubbers thought the same until someone watched it and started making a fuss about how good it was till it reached fansubbers' ears, which has taken an entire month. I bet more groups will join soon.

Moral: you can't judge a series by its plot alone, you have to actually watch it (or you may skip a gem like this) ;)

The serie was almost a "more of the same" with harem, summer loves and such but the shonen ai references are quite amusing...:D Yes, it's can become a harem-like anime but more from the style Tenchi Muyo where the main role is the victim.

At least the first episodes are funny.

If there is one thing that frustrates me, it is that it is very DIFFICULT to isolate a moment for GIF-ifying. The background perspective is constantly moving, the animation is constantly in motion and rarely static, the fluidity of the action is absurdly high.

In short... in an irony of a situation, the animation quality is too high, I am having a terrible time trying to make animated GIFs without dropping frames (which leads to choppiness), or dropping the colour quality (which leads to horrible image quality).

It has already happened multiple times when I am examining the captured frames and I go like, "Okay... background, stop moving please... I am trying to loop this damn scene. NOOOO! THE PERSPECTIVE CHANGED! THE SCENE IS ZOOMING! ARRGGGHHHH!"

This may come as a surprise, but a lot of SnH's scenes are uniquely framed at a full 24fps. The foreground image may be static, but the background is generally changing every single damn frame. This holds especially true for "dramatised moments". During the quiet moments, the framerate uniqueness varies between 12fps and 8fps, but it is generally 12fps... which is extremely rare for broadcast anime. I have no idea where they are getting the money to apply OVA-standards to this series. Maybe the sponsors are ardent readers of the manga or something... or maybe... the Yakuza is sponsoring them. :heh:

But you do see boy meets girl and its the same thing. Plus trying to make the situation as horrid as possible, but somehow, it doesnt become anything like that, instead its a happy start with some semi conflicts along the way. If you're watching the series just for that then you should drop it. As of episode 5, he doesn't get much dialog and what he gets to say isn't really important either. Well, you can wait and see for yourself, but don't expect much.

Episode 5-

This episode followed the manga pretty well. It introduced Saru and Iinchou, as well as set up the main setting of the story.
The parts that differed from the manga wasn't a big deal, though in the part where Nagasumi runs through the room where the girls are changing, the anime made it funnier by adding a song and slowing it down. The bridge scene didn't exist in the manga either.
The "what life is like in class with the Seto-gumi" was also anime only (though in a good way) with stuff like Masa's class and eating Octopus Nakajima.

The next episode is the one where Mawari suspects San of being a mermaid. I expect some anime-only stuff too.

first day of school for san and already the drama i off the scale...i just saw it comming...san's dad wasnt going to give up so easily...from the moment he cannoned saru into the wall i knew that san's father is the new teacher :D

then there was kaasan who joined in as the school nurse...was she actually trying to seduce nagasumi O.o or at least she was trying to get him excited...and is she puts it to describe his action..."kawaiii" ^_^

masa is another teacher along with jaws boy...it was pretty funny to see nagasumi backed into a corner like that and within 0.1 seconds he runs through the classroom (full of girls changing) to avoid being eaten XD

pretty good ep...and now that the famliy is here as well i can expect further mishaps :3

Both, actually. She's been a rival of San's for a long time, although others might view it as a friendship. She's also a mermaid and is spotted by Nagasumi right outside his house, thus making her declare that he be her slave for the rest of his life :-) I'm looking forward to how they'll animate it ^_^;

Although she said he's her slave, after a few chapters, it doesn't feel like that anymore. Though in a few chapters, she decides to treat him like a servant/slave. Then there was the event where Luna's father misunderstood Nagasumi drying off Luna's tail and almost forced him to marry Luna. Can't forget Luna's "army" from school...

I wonder how much the anime will animate. So far with 12 volumes, there are a good number of other characters:
Akeno is in the opening
Kai will most likely appear
I don't give a hoot about those three fish brothers
Satori probably will appear
Sa-tan might appear (though I wonder what they will do about her swearing)
Maruko and Fuki was in the newest volume, so who knows about them.

I just started watchin this show and its really good . It covers on of my fave genres Comedy/ Romance . The chracters are reallywell made and funny I loved Nagasumi's mom a lot her constant dribbing of father and son duo was the highlight : D
