ADV Universe has the first dubbed episode for $4.99. Yeah...I got it...
Actually, the dub seems pretty good to me. And Eruruu's name-change sounds fine...sort of. It surprised me to be alright with it after hearing it used. It's not like every dub can practice pronunciation till they get it right like Bleach. Sure, they don't do their Rs like the Japanese, but at least their consistent (heh). Anyway, Everyone sounds fine in the dub. Except I can only see Greg Ayres as Chrno, but whatever. He still does a great job.
But of course, you're all gonna say that everyone sounds wrong. That they lack emotion. That the females sound older. Etcetera, etcetera.
Putting aside the obvious language difference, how English and Japanese are spoken are completely different. And it's not like there are many English voice actressess who can do a good small and cute voice to come close to Eruruu's and Aruruu's.
I'd show you bits and pieces through YouTube or something, but I don't know how to edit a video and since ADV Universe's downloads are supposed to be protected, I don't want to get in trouble. Well, I probably won't get anything except a deleted video, but whatever.
EDIT: Alright, here are some videos I recorded. And yes, I really did use my camera...

Does the V.A. for the dubbed Nuwangi effectively pull off the knucklehead voice? heh Actually, I'm more interested to hear how different the tail pull scene went. O_o

Nuwangi is voiced by Greg Ayres. Hm...if you've ever watched Chrno Chrusade dubbed, Nuwangi sounds almost like Chrno. lol But no, that edge in Japanese Nuwangi is not in the dub. I don't know if that's even within the capabilities of English (or any other language) voice actors.
Yeah, I was going to post about the tail part. It's alright, except the "Houououo~" (sp? lol) part is much better in Japanese. Well, might be because the Japanese VA has a smaller voice, making it sound cuter. Whatever.
I can't wait to hear more of Aruruu and see how well her English voice is. But that'll have to wait till the DVDs. By the way, the DVD box art (only assuming by the image on ADV Universe) looks ugly.
I will try to take scenes from the episode and them on YouTube or something. Can the Nero player do that? Never tried...
EDIT: Oh, and if this episode is any indication of future episodes, the titles are still in Japanese. However, there were no subtitles for the downloaded version.
EDIT2: Forget it! I'm just gonna take my digital camera and record the parts of the episode. Much easier and quicker.
LOL do they pronounce Eruru's name as Elulu? ^^

Meh, not like they practice pronunciations all the time anyway. Can't wait to see them with the longer names. Like Kuuya's...
OMG ewwwwwww. holy crap! im sorry but most of those voices dont fit. ERURU is probably is only voice that's decent. the first 15 sec sounds wrong so in many levels LOL. do english voice actors ever watch the subbed version before voicing it?

I would think they do...Just finding matching voices is probably hard to impossible. So they gotta use what they got.

Well, finding voices that match the Japanese voices isn't the goal per se either (even if they could). It's more to find voices that give off the equivalent qualities in the character to an English audience. Sometimes that's actually quite different than the equivalent sounding voice in Japanese. (For example, Eruru's voice does sound like a young but caring/motherly woman, but is a much lower pitch than the Japanese equivalent, and so on.)
I think the main problem asking for dub opinions around here is that it seems a lot of fansub watchers suffer from "voice imprinting" - meaning, they can't detach the character from the first voice they heard. So it doesn't matter whether the dub voice is good, bad, or indifferent; if you've imprinted the voice, any other voice will sound bad. For my part, I don't "imprint" that much, I guess. I always tend to watch the dubs of shows I buy on R1 DVD, even (and especially) when I've already seen the fansubs. I always take it as a reinterpretation of the show, so I don't tend to get too worked up over some liberties (so long as they make sense). For what it's worth, I think the dub voices (at least from those clips provided) do a pretty good job of capturing the personalities of the characters, and there isn't too much in the way of "mouth-flap-fitting" awkwardness (a constant and unenviable struggle for dub actors). If my sisters (who prefer dubs) were to watch the show, I don't think they'd get a different or less favourable impression of the characters due to the voice acting, which is sort of my benchmark. So, I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with the rest of the show in the dub.

So true.
I think the voices are decent, it's actually one of the better dubs I've seen. The Eluluu thing is really getting on my nerves though. Personally I hate Eruruu's new voice the most, but that's because I just loved how the Japanese voice fit.

Aww... this is good news. Seems ADV did license the little shorts released on the R2 DVD's. This makes FPB happy :D

Me = get. This also makes Ezen happy that they got the little short-movies on the DVD. "Dive. Dive. Dive."

Hm, I think ADV will release the box with the Volume 2 of the DVD.
http://www.animeondvd.com/reviews2/disc_reviews/6061.php
I heard that some company was considering releasing boxes with second volumes instead of the first, so that people wouldn't have to spend so much on something they might end up not liking. But I couldn't remember what company that was. I guess it was ADV?

Yes, ADV is starting to put boxes onto 2nd volume releases recently. It practically makes sense if you think about it. ;)

Yes, ADV Films are also releasing Vol 2 + Box for series such as Paniponi Dash and Nerima Daikon Brothers. And the AoD review also makes it clear this will happen with Utawarerumono as well. It's a good idea, gives you a chance to see if you like the series enough to purchase a box when Vol 2 is released.

ADV's Utawarerumono site is up and running.
LOL And right on the front page is a "proper" pronunciation of the title.
"OO-TAH-WAH-RAY(meh...)-ROO-MOE-NO"
http://www.advfilms.com/titles/utawarerumono/index.html
^Hm, what was up with that other link on their site last time? Oh well...
Oh, and look in their Extras section for three wallpapers. One's a Dori and Gura image...Oh, and on the Character Profiles section, they spelled Eruruu's name as "Eruru." This either means they changed it back or whoever coded the site was unaware of the name-change. Probably a typo since it's spelled "Eluluu" in the Story section.

I didn't mind "Eluluu's" voice that much (I was originally worried she would sound too much like Osaka--same VA anyway) but Hakuoro sounded LAME. If they wanted him to sound like a washed-up failed Batman so much, they should have hired Adam West.
Episode 04 appeared on Newtype's free DVD in January issue - seriously, why episode 04? Talk about your spoilers. Anyway, i thought i'd check out the dub for a laugh.. and - i hate dubs anyway, though this just sucks. Pronouncing the names fails hard..
As for the subs - Eluluu?
And.. this episode makes me cry.. so much. ;_;
First DVD volume is out now. ...I got mine for around twenty dollars at the local Best Buy. Morning opening hour. Huge figgin line. Wasn't sure at first what that was all about. I mean, no way this line could be for the Utawarerumono release. But, I had to be sure, had to, plan the route. Follow through entry, a right at the computer hardware, straight down to the HD area, a left till enter the DVD media area, Aruruu DIVE!
Nobody around. Or, maybe they just couldn't find it yet. Or the Oboro barrier. But I got it! Only less than a hand full of copies there, but I got it. And, if you have perhaps ever wondered why the cover design is this big mask surrounded by what looks like my front yard,.. it's because of days just like this. Nothing small. Just something big that stands out, saying, "Here I am!". Plus, if handled at the correct angle, you can use the cover's bling to blind just about anyone nearby.
Of course at checkout, everyone there had their own green box, and the line from before made sense after that. World of Warcraft was put on the same release date. And then, it instantly dawned on me, ...that everything told in South Park is friggin true.
Oh wow, this is actually probably one of the best dubs I've heard. I especially enjoy how fitting Teoro and Hakuoro's voices are. Tsukuru is AMAZING, pity her voice won't be featured much. >: Eruruu (Or well, Eluluu) sounds really good most of the time, sometimes it's a little forced-sounding but for the most part it's a great job. And HAHAH, the tail pull scene was done very well, actually. ^_^ The only thing I'm dissapointed in is Aruruu's voice - it fits her character, but I was so attached to the almost-monotone, curt voice of Japanese Aruruu. Nuwangi is pretty well-voiced, not quite as great as the Japanese Nuwangi, but suitably arrogant in his tone.
I'm just so happy my favourite series hasn't been butchered. <3 I'll definitely be buying this. ;0

As for the name, could it be that the Japanese people wanted them to that?Well, possibly... it's hard to say. I personally think it may have been to add a bit more distinction between the names, and seeing as the Japanese sound is half-L half-R to begin with, it doesn't really both me, I guess... but oh well. :heh:
It is possible the name is supposed to be Elulu. The Japanese language, if you look at katakana, doesn't have any "L" sounds. They accomadated "V" sounds with one of the katakana syllables, but "L" sounds are just used with Ra, Ri, Ru, Re, or Ro.
Especially with Eruruu's voice, it seems less an issue of whether or not the voice fits and more that it sounds like she's reading from a script, the way the sentences are pronounced just don't sound like fluent english =/.
For that same reason, I'd have to say Tusukuru's voice was my favorite, followed by either Teoro, Nuwangi or Sopoku.
Edit: I just noticed something, they change Eruruu to Eluluu but it seems as if Aruruu's name kept the r's...

No no, I've noticed. But these things seem like very small faults on an otherwise decent dub. ;0

Haha, Dori and Gura's voices are correct. Still questionable genders. Well, anyone new to the series will start questioning after that certain episode. Unless they think "Female voice actors = female characters."

I think their voices are done well, and that they are also like that of other young male characters found in other animes that have also been voiced by women.

I've thought about it for a while. Since Eluluu is technically "correct" I think the reason they chose to use L's instead of R's for one sister but not the other is to minimize confusion. I mean, I'm sure some of you have referred to the wrong sister before am I right?
Asrialys
2007-01-18, 11:33
Does it matter? It's spelled in Katakana anyway, isn't it? So it's up to interpretation, as long as it isn't something completely different.

Yeah, that's how I took it, too. English/American kids are dumb. <3

Despite the truth of that statement, I highly doubt ADV is targeting kids with this show...
Probably going after many of the more serious anime fans in the west; not the casual type, so lots of teens and young adults in English speaking markets is my guess. Even still, they gave it a rating of TV PG for violence. The show is at least that, at the most, TV 14. I thought it might get the rating of 13 and up (I dunno, do people know what I'm talking about; the ratings they usually put on R1 anime DVDs?).
First volume arrived yesterday morning. Yes i did say i wasen't going to order it, though i couldn't help myself - the cover is even more god awful then in images, though its all worth it just to have the first Omake DVD Special.

Well, just got to watching some of the dubs. At first I was kind of put off, but then I just had to forget all about the Japanese VA's (they were firmly implanted into my head) and watch it like I had never seen it before.
Once I did this I found myself enjoying it, it wasn't EXCEPTIONAL work by any means, but it was good enough to keep me satisfied.
I haven't had a chance to check out the, supposedly, awful cover :D.
The box art for volume 02 and the art box have been released.

I know whats happening, they knew how much i hated the first volume cover, so they're placing Dori & Gura on the second to please me.. they're doing alright. Though i know for sure i won't be buying the Artbox.

How in the world are they trying to market this? Well, at least you can throw away that worthless piece of cardboard. Hope that line isn't written anywhere on the box.
Ok, I'm more confused on how to really spell Eruruu's name. I'm used to "Eruruu" from Yesy's fansubs. But I understand how the whole r's and l's are almost the same thing in Japanese, so it could also be interpreted as Eluluu. (And as someone mentioned, for the distinction between the sisters for dumb Americans =)
So it gets worse... Out of curiosity, I went to wikipedia to see what they had on Utawarerumono. They spell it Elulū (the last "u" with a macron). Since I primarily speak English, and studied french for four years, I've had no experience with the macrons. Is this also valid as a spelling?
Anyway, I just had to vent... =) I prefer Yesy's spelling of the name. And I'm buying the dvd's to support good anime in the States, not because I like dubbing hehe

Most subtitles (fan or official) will just double the vowels because it's easier to read for your average English speaker (who isn't used to the idea of accents). Eruruu, Eluluu, Erurū, and Elulū are all valid romanizations of エルルゥ. Fun, eh? :heh:
Ah thanks for the explanation relentless. I'm slightly comforted now =)

Art box...
If this gets licenced for Australia, I really hope that the boxset art isn't going to look as bad as that...
But I would buy it anyway, ugly or not T-T
And yeah, I don't understand what they're doing with the marketing. From what I've seen (trailers, covers, description), if I had not watched this for free, the marketing for this would not make me want to buy it. I guess ADV is aiming for a different target audience...

I just find it hilarious that the dubbing company probably browsed these forums, kept coming across stuff about the twins like The Sperm Song, and decided that they must be popular, since they're the first and only characters featured so far on the DVD covers! The first one was just Hakuoro's mask, and so the second one has the twins in a potentially twincest pose!
That cover for volume 2 is almost the same as one of the Japanese DVD covers; they use the same image of Dori and Gura. I like that they used that image of them for the DVD cover. Let's hope we see some Karura, Touka, Eruuruu, and Aruuruu.

I like the dub. I watch more subbed than dubbed, but I like the dub. Some dubs I prefer over the sub (FMP series).
Some characters I don't like with the dub version (Hakauro, Benewi). But I like Eruuruu, Dori, Gura, and Oboro for the dub. I have yet to watch DVD 2 with Karura, I hope they did a good job with her.

The dubs were done well, I'll give them that much. However, the Japanese VA's were just so phenomenally impressive that I just really cannot watch with the dubs. I just got my friend into this series the other day, and he feels the same way. He would normally watch dubs, for the most part, but he can't bring himself to watch the dubs after he heard the Japanese VA's.
All the Japanese VA's sound like they had so much more emotion, and I was drawn to them. I, for one, did not feel the same effect for Aruuruu. She was so cute in the Japanese version, but I had no draw to her whatsoever in the English dub. It was not bad, but I just did not feel an emotional impact.
My friend did really thank me for introducing him to this series. He thought it was just so fantastic, that he bought himself whatever was available on DVD, too. Now the wait for Aug. 24...

The dub is much more acceptable than the Melancholy of Suzimiya Haruhi dub, and much better in fact. Probably the best dub I've heard was Cowboy Bebop, and I haven't heard a better dub since then. I do agree, the Japanese Seiyuu for Eruruu is cuter than the English dubbed voice, however.

Yes, Thundra, natural, original voices had more of an impact and felt more appropriate than dubbed voices. Dubbed voices have little to no emotion, almost robotic, as if just reading the script line-by-line. I stopped watching dubs since Cardcaptors on The WB, which was worst than the original.
But, I'll give the Utawarerumono dub a passing grade at best, and will probably be next "best" dubbed anime since Bebop.
