this anime is called tokyo tribe "2" but it doesn't appear to have a prequel called "1".
it will be on air in japan on november 6. do you know anything about the prequel (and especially, is this the right topic? :) as it wil be on air this season)

Based on a seinen manga thats serialized in the seinen(young men's) fashion magazine Boon (http://comipedia.com/magazine/boon).

Like Hiphop/rap, do you? Fond of violence with a bit of drama on the side that is as good as grandma's cheese? A shounen-fan, are you? Well then, this show is perfect for you. :D The animation in the first episode was really good, so was the colorful, vibrant, stylish drawing. The background was very detailed with plenty of angles from a camera's point of view. Even for a Madhouse production, this was a pretty exceptional first episode overall animation-wise. I've liked the first episode, and will look forward to more Tokyo Tribe as long as the show doesn't get too emo which is to be expected from this kinds of storyline.

I've been searching for days and can't find a RAW for this and I LOVE the manga it's my current joy.
I need help I suck at locating anime and I think shinsen were going to sub it but I don't think they're now or it was a vicious rumour i'm totally crushed.

As good as it felt after watching the first episode, I think it is almost certain it will attract some fansubber to pick up this series. The length of the series (13 episodes) also work in the favor of a fansubbing group who may not want to be tied down to any particular series for an undetermined period of time. Btw, there were no "yo yo" or "thug life" comments, but there was a guy in the beginning of the episode who was playing Grand Theft Auto! :)

Just watched the first episode and it was great and pretty much covers the first volume of the manga but I remember Santa saying each episode would be a volume of the manga or would work out to that ratio.
I found the raw and well I dont follow Japanese so did not bother downloading . From the Screen Captures and Manga volume covers I must say am excited . I loved the Gangsteriffic and In your Face style concept in Tokyo Tribes 2

Somehow, I don't think that "R-15" went far enough as a warning.
That sex scene was gross beyond belief. :-(*) A little reminiscent of that DUNE scene with another sacrificial male. It doesn't happen again, right? Did it happen in the manga?

I'm still nauseated from ep. 1. My hats off to any group that survives ep. 1 without vomitting. The worse part is that scene is censored. Imagine what it's going to be like on DVD. Really, really gross.

I've been reading the manga and if you think that's creepy you should see the more detailed drawing. The following is a spoiler from the first chapter of the manga.
Early in the manga while introducing the two main characters Kai and Mera plus their hoods. There is a scene where mera is busted selling coke by a beat cop and since he has clout nobody does shit when get gets a soildering iron and burns out his eye while the cops partner does nothing. But I was totally suprised they kept the Bubba scene because the first time you read the manga your brain goes "what the" but that's from the third chapter

Well, I can only assume there will be lots of trouble to the publisher if it keeps publishing this type of stuff in a fashion magazine for young men, how many readers will just drop the magazine ?
And its not one of those magazines that have a few readers, it has according to the JMPA a 101,042 readers.

I can't find any mention of it being censored in the magazine.
Its serialized in a magazine for young men, and not a magazine for boys, so why would they censor it ? I'm accustomed of hearing about manga serialized in shounen magazines being censored, but not about seinen manga being censored >.<
(But I do remember once hearing about a seinen manga getting censored).

So, when the fatboy mentioned about his son, I wasn't expecting a cross dressing weirdo. Here is to hoping the cross dressing son will show his true color in the upcoming episode. Oh, and one more time:

story:
We're in Tokyo, but not the one you know, a slightly different one, where several "tribes" exist.
The protagonist, familyless Deguchi Kai, is one of the Saru (Musashino area) and spends all his time with his friends.
On the other side we find Mera, Kai's best friend at school times, who leads Bukuro's Wu-ronz.
One day, some of the Saru get murdered in Bukuro, so Kai and Mera find themselves fighting.
Sunmi, the woman in the center of their struggle, and the tribes of Shinjuku, Shibuya, Yokohama and Machida, fill up a Tokyo that will explose in clan fight violence.

I felt a little disappointed with how the story has changed ever so slightly
The storys time line has shifted a little bit from the manga but it's ok but the whole mera....kai........mera..............kai thing could of been shorter or cut out since it was such a time waster. I can't wait to see episode 3 and gaileo in action!!!

There was no anime for the original Tokyo Tribe manga and there is only one volume worth of material. It's a shame tokyo pop only picked up the second manga and not also the first.
TT2 is like Awesome , Visuals are funtastic ... I did not find the rape that graphic before the rape scene it was more graphic

No movie was made it was just picked to be made and the movie would be based on TT2 since Tokyo Tribes is the english manga title for Tokyo Tribe 2 and they tend to use the english manga title on that website when making reference to Tokyo Tribe 2.

i also watched on youtube and i tried to ask the guy to send me the raw files, but finally he didn't listen to me. episodes 2 and 3 are being encoded, and for the following... well, waiting for the raw files.
Screenshot for Episode 3: Finally, a raw for this series. For the lack of raw, I was starting to think may be this series was discontinued. Watching the show keeps me on the edge of my sit as I'm always expecting something gruesome to happen. This episode had a good amount of violence. The pansy looking son of the fat mob boss was no pansy as we find out in the episode. He is quite the nasty as a matter of fact.

No there is no Tokyo Tribe 1 Anime but there is a Tokyo Tribe manga that preceeds Tokyo Tribe 2, and if that doesn't confuse you Tokyo Pop has released the manga in english as Tokyo Tribes.
Episode 3 will be out tomorrow (in gmt+1)

I'm Helgen from NYC, I produce music, interested in Fashion, Video Games and electronics.
I don't really read/watch anime anymore since I was a teen, but I am highly interested in this anime, and used to read the manga any chance I went to a Barnes and Nobles.
I recently downloaded the first episode, and I have to say it's pretty much as good as the Manga, but I was wondering if anyone had info as to where's the rest of the episodes past the 2nd (disregarding the raws.)
I'm dying to see the rest of them, so if anyone knows anything, please let me know, thanks!

I loved ep 3 one word A W E S O M E . I was a bit dissapointed with ep 2 after ep 1 it had lot to live upto but sadly it didnt . Mera vs Kai wasnt that good of a battle IMO . This ep lives upto the first one esp that Leo chara was really intresting , strangely Wu Sugoi repitition didnt bother me . With Mera being trapped if he does free himself which he will , he is on his own . I think Bappa Sama's hand is not over his head no more .
Bappa's son is trying to take over the buisness and going by his words even Bappa is an obstacle in his conquests

Screenshot for Episode 3: Finally, a raw for this series. For the lack of raw, I was starting to think may be this series was discontinued. Watching the show keeps me on the edge of my sit as I'm always expecting something gruesome to happen. This episode had a good amount of violence. The pansy looking son of the fat mob boss was no pansy as we find out in the episode. He is quite the nasty as a matter of fact.

I accidentally download eps 3 instead of the Tokyo Majin one , and I really hate e-thug (people who act tough on the internet, oh noes...) and white kid who pretend to be black so this anime is a big no for me , but the song is sure catchy :D

Yeah Nkoi shouldnt have died The protagonist Kai isnt Gangsterific he is more like a cute puppy brandishing a baseball bat . My hope lies on Mera btw did you see his ride in ep 4 :D Also that Leo is very promising

The list is taken from the official Tokyo Tribe 2 website so an incorrect translation most likely i've only read upto the fith volume of the manga which is about episode 6 or so.

I noticed in episode 5 Buppa says hou hou which is "very good" in Cantonese so I guess you'll a Cantonese translator since Jada is from Hong Kong in the story.

It went up to 13 and covers the manga which is 12 volumes there are some small differences in the anime. Volume six of the manga should be released in english in March / April.

By the way, a few intersting points:
- "Mera" sounds like the sound of crackling fire.
- "Kai" is written with the character 海 which translates to "sea". In the manga of TT, Mera's former girlfriend, Fujio, who looks like Sunmi, was previously dating Saru's leader, Nagisa. He promised to take her to the sea, but he never could because he got killed in a street struggle.

Just finished watching episode 8 and it's a damn shame this show isn't getting much buzz, lost on page 2 of animesuki, but this ep was visually hard to compete with! My screen-capture button on BS Player must hate me because this episode gave me reason to abuse the option...So much adult, intense, hype, cool, visceral expressionism in this episode...So many colors and great renderings..I'd say this is the best episode in many respects...
The whole backstory gets fleshed out, also the misunderstanding between the two main characters...I mean this ep kicked-a$$ even before the first commercial break with one of the most realistically hawt love-making scenes I've seen in a non-ecchi title...The atmosphere of almost every scene was purposely evident, and Mera was absolutley commanding this ep...Buppa crying over his son and his troubles before Skunk straightened him out was hilarious...It seems Skunk is power-tripping in the classic "runt gets no respect" formula...Maybe I'm naive but being a martial arts henchman I would not have let Skunk cut my chin in half xP...
Again really great episode, just wish this series had more exposure and a bigger fanbase so these episode discussions could really get jumping off...Man this series is so fun, hip, malicious, and somber at the same time...Really more flavors than Fanta...

This show is so vibrant and gutter with it's presentation...Love the Machida THUGS!!!! Love the 045 Bulldawgs!!! The THUG leader looks like "Baby" from Cash Money records LMMFAO!! Just another great episode as Skunk shows a THUG how to be a real thug by banging his girl in-front of him xD...Man Skunk has Joe Pesci syndrome bad right now...Loved how Mera shut him down by PWNING his moustache xD!!
Is there anywhere online where people are actually talking about and DISCUSSING this show where I can logon too? Cause it ain't happening here and that's a shame, because anime has never seen a show like this that taps into the urban aspect of gang-life that's quite tangent to the stereo-typical hip-hop element, but way better than that fake hip-hop $hit on MTV because Tokyo Tribe is brought to life with pencil and paper making it's style far more achievable!! This show is too damn cool, it really is...It's hardcore Mafia, Sex, and Drugs, with heart and Gangsta dark comedy all combined...When the 045's started rollin in the 6-4's I was like :eek:...God let the next ep drop soon, cause I can't wait another month to see what the SARU's, THUGS, and Bulldawgs got planned for Wu-ronz and that skunk Skunk...

I've been wondering why this show hasn't really caught on fire and i'm guessing its because it doesn't have the more conventional anime style.Maybe the oversaturated colours put some people off. Many people decide whether or not they want to watch the series based on the first episode.And in retrospect maybe people just saw the first ep didn't really get what was going on and decided to switch off.
I for one thought this was just what anime needed to get it out of the rut it was in.

So sad this title is so under the radar...If it wasn't for the Hitler stuff I'd say this had a great chance of going to adult swim (This show would do much better in America-it translates straight to the hip-hop dynamic)

A license is all but guaranteed for its future. The problem is how it will release and what creative control will be demanded by the original company. Not to mention music issues.

First let me Thank Kanjisubs for being the only guys cool-enuff to sub the first overtly ethnic-urban anime I've ever seen...Thanx guys...
Well finally checked out the last two eps and I guess I'm satisfied...I wouldn't say the series ended phenomenal or great but it was good and overall this was a good if not highly unique series (In the scope of anime that is)...The ending kinda fell a little flat as Buppa and Jadakinds were pretty much disposed of without a climatic fight IMO (Nkoi's android actually was the tuffest opponent of the entire series and he died pretty lame) but the animation was superb..Skunk actually wound up being the main antagonist of this series and that kinda makes me sour..I mean that bastard was the reason Kai and Mera weren't friends anymore and that indirectly caused the death of Tera-san..So I wanted his Napoleon complexed a$$ to die and he survives being hit by a moving subway to apparently kill Mera :twitch::eyebrow: (Basically he's jealous of their friendship and that Mera still looks at him as the old pathetic skunk)...Good to see that Timberland boot hit the floor at Penny's which tells us Mera somehow survived a shell to the chest^^...
Once Skunk took over as a Nazi leader the show kinda lost it's original charm, but I still loved the character designs of the different gangs and gang members (One of my fav scenes in the whole series is when all the gangs meet and we see all these great character designs)...All different styles, color schemes, and attitudes..It really brought that element of thug-life to reality...The music was obviously great if you dig hip-hop on some level and the animation at times was outstanding...
Overall I'd give the series a 7.85 outta 10 defiantly enjoying the earlier eps a tad bit more than the last 3 or 4, but the experience was great and I hope this series gets picked up for the US (where I think it will be better handled and more popular IMO) MTV 2 or [adult swim] could really get some run outta this...I could see MTV getting actual rappers to voice most of the characters--This could be a success if the right people pick it up...I'll miss this show greatly because of it's cool-factor, colorful visuals, and raw atmosphere...There's really nothing like it so I'll definatly hit that << -Button and re-start @ TRACK-1 again...

I think it was implied that Mera survived getting shot, and Skunk then died of his injuries. I don't think there really needed to be a climactic battle with Buppa, I actually thought the way he died was appropriate.
As for Jadakins, I did think that the final fight ended up being too short in the end.
One thing that really impressed me though, was Kai's perspective after getting floored by Jadakins. I have gone into physical shock from injury before, and it was exactly like that. Not only the stumbling around and feeling nauseous and dizzy, but the way things sound being drowned out by white noise, and everything getting bright and blurry like that. Highly unpleasant experience, far worse than the injury itself.
Anyway I thought it was a decent ending. You also don't have to dig hip-hop to dig this show. I aint gonna give it a numerical rating but it was definitely worth my time, and this show deserves wider attention.
One thing I couldn't quite figure out though, did Fujio-san actually jump off the platform after all, or did Skunk push her? I would have thought the latter, but the flashback seemed to imply the former. Not that that would absolve Skunk of lying to Mera or letting Mera's parents' die or anything else that he did after that, but still, it was confusing.

I believe DJ Muro (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DJ_Muro) produced the soundtrack so I don't think that retaining the music would be a problem. As for tv, they could blur out the tits (or mosaic it, to make it consistent with the other mosaics), but they'd still have to edit the rape scene in the first episode even with a TV-MA to put it on basic cable. Probably some of the other sexual stuff would be edited a bit too.
Regardless of whether or not this gets on tv, I'd guess the chances of this getting licensed within the next year are pretty high.

One more thing: this is a total nitpick, but am I the only one who thought it was a bad idea to have one of the secondary tribes be known as the Waru when the main tribe was known as the Saru? That confused the fuck out of me at first. Did they give any reason for the similar names that I might have missed?
I've been wondering why this show hasn't really caught on fire and i'm guessing its because it doesn't have the more conventional anime style.Maybe the oversaturated colours put some people off. Many people decide whether or not they want to watch the series based on the first episode.And in retrospect maybe people just saw the first ep didn't really get what was going on and decided to switch off.
I for one thought this was just what anime needed to get it out of the rut it was in.
I personally had a hard time getting past the first few episodes. It definitely was a good series in the long run but it was kind of hard to get into for me.

Anyway I thought it was a decent ending. You also don't have to dig hip-hop to dig this show.
I'm not seeing many people who loathe hip-hop music//culture (however stereotypical they believe it to be or not be) giving this show much of a chance (This show would have a locked-in audience in America IMO--Boondocks followed by TT2 sounds nice to me)...If TT2 was live-action I probably wouldn't like it as much, but it being anime kinda changes my perspective and honestly I dig the "gangsta element" in the show morso than I would in live-action where it would feel far more stereotypical to me (Especially if they chose to show this from a non-asian aspect)...That's why anime is so dope though, thru rich colors and expressionism you can give something you may not necessarily love a whole new perspective...I'd never be eyeing down thugs talking about how fly they look in real-life (The current climate of fakeness and commercialism in hip-hop today irks me to no end) but in TT2 just watching the different designs and flavorful clothing//attire choices by the gang members were tight :p...The character designs really made an impression on me...
I'm mostly an underground hip-hop guy myself with popular artist like Nas, Mos def, Talib Kweli, MF DOOM , Ghostface, Lupe Fiasco, etc., being the only type of cats to get my respect...The 50 cents, T.I., Birdman's, of the world can suck Skunk off for all I care, but when Birdman is trasformed into Machida's THUG's leader in anime-form he's dope as hell^^...
One thing I couldn't quite figure out though, did Fujio-san actually jump off the platform after all, or did Skunk push her? I would have thought the latter, but the flashback seemed to imply the former. Not that that would absolve Skunk of lying to Mera or letting Mera's parents' die or anything else that he did after that, but still, it was confusing.
That got me too...the first flashback ep doesn't imply Skunk, but this one does...I'd have to go back and re-watch it, but I think she killed herself...Her "Swan-Lake" jump-pose was just too awesome for a push^^...
As for Waru and Saru I always thought that was some type of distinction to show those 2 tribes were for lack of a better word "cool" with one another...
Lastly, the first ep was abit much for me too (The rape scene being waaaay too much), but I saw the potential and loved the urban themes...Then the next 8, 9 episodes were pretty good to great (with the Fujjio Flashback ep //Sunmi sex ep being excellent)..But once Skunk got power and turned his gang into Nazi's the realistic (surrealistic) tone of the show began to seem far more pretentious to me...Kai and Mera surviving 100 story building falls was a tad too much...Even the musical score surrounding Skunk's power was too hokey for the coolness that this show had delivered up to that point...Honestly Skunk being the main antagonist bothered me because from early on in the show it seemed so many other cooler characters would have played the role much better (Nkoi for instance)...All in all like previously stated though I still loved the show and can't wait to see how it gets handled in the US market (if it gets picked up)...
The show seems to fuse elements of Japanese thug life with perceived...I don't wanna say african-american or hiphop but its the closest thing I know. For instance the bit with the Hands and their captain being a chick, then getting pregnant. The gang's activities and eventually the people's jobs.
Oddly enough the rape scene (Buppa with the random boy, right?) seemed made for america, as it were. Its mostly behind a curtain involves nothing challenging in the idea or execution and sets up the character in a minute and done by an obviously corrupt uhm "white" guy to a random nobody who dies. They might truncate it. Orrr, exercise it (as Buppa is like the ONLY remotely gay character in the series and he's a crazy perv) but compared to the numerous scenes of women performing sex acts and being used. It is a sick dark humor that gets more mileage by what it doesn't show and even if editted somewhat (skip/jumped or a cut of Buppa's actual flesh as to silohuette) would retain its power.
As to the end of the series...I liked it because every plot thread came to a satisfactory conclusion. It did seem oddball Buppa had no idea about Mera's folks as Nkoi knew but as he'd spent the previous episodes catatonic and never seemed to do much him not knowing then isn't much of a convenient goof. Mera does come off as a complete jack-off though, blaming his friend for an accident without talking to him or without asking him beforehand to rush over all of his prizemoney (which he might not have received right then) in less than an afternoon and swearing bloody vengance the next day with no explanation. He really came off like the worse stereotype of a woman, there. Didn't help you could say the recent escalation of the war could be lain at his feet between his killing Terry, attempted killings of Kai, killing Nkoi and then blaming it on the hands. He was a good functionary and a badass enforcer but Skunk just had the sheer wild hatred and ability to needle others. Unfortunately when they went Skunk Nation it just got crazy.
Erika did fine in her role of runaway princess, typical woman in a ninkyo eiga, fused with hiphop hoe stereotypes. It just wasn't much of a role. Nor did we ever understand what was her deal. She caused alot of shit running away. As is she's a curvy fat-lipped plot device or macguffin then a character... which is typical in ninkyo eiga, I suppose.
Here is hoping TT2 doesn't damamge anime's hard won rep to leave the basement, as it were.

You really just don't watch enough anime then. Sure there are very few anime shows that are as graphically violent as Tokyo Tribes (and graphic violence =/= "adult"), but tell me how something like Nana, Nodame Cantabile, or Paranoia Agent are at all aimed at kids*?
There have been anime that have been aimed at adults for a very long time. It's just that those adults were mainly otaku types (not counting Studio Ghibli films, which are quite mainstream in every sense). I don't know that Tokyo Tribe 2 is aimed at otaku per se, but it's still a show aimed very much at a niche audience in Japan.
*:just a word of advice: if you can't stand classical music and/or romantic comedies, then Nodame Cantabile is not the show for you; similarly if you can't stand romantic melodrama and/or Japanese punk music, skip Nana.

If you loathe hip-hop, then yes, this isn't a show you're likely to be able to get into. I don't loathe hip-hop, but I don't really listen to it either. I still very much liked the show, and thought the music was decent even if it's not the sort of music I generally listen to. Most of what I've read about people not giving this show a chance stemmed from the rape scene.
If they can edit out most of it for tv, and edit the nudity somehow (or blur it out), then I could see this getting a tv deal. Probably not following Boondocks though. Boondocks is on Adult Swim's comedy block after all. It did occur to me though that Aaron McGruder would likely love this show though, and someone needs to show it to him.
All in all like previously stated though I still loved the show and can't wait to see how it gets handled in the US market (if it gets picked up)...
I give it a roughly 75% chance of getting picked up, at least for DVD. I don't see why any of it would be edited for the DVD release. I could sort of see them changing the name of the show to "Tokyo Tribes," just to reduce confusion though. The quality of the dub would depend on who picks it up, of course. TV would hardly be a sure thing but would be theoretically possible.

Because its mostly in silohouette and not taking alot of time/visual space its very VERY easy to edit out in its entirety. Or just edit to reduce graphicness. It isn't challenging like say longish on-screen sexual encounter, I mean I just had enough time to do "Oh god he's actually no Oh shit" and them *schlunk,* and its played for laughs. They are dark laughs, but laughs, making it a lot easier to sell as is. The uhm "rapture" and the shot of the corpse may need an edit but mainly ask yourself "how much did I actually see?" It starts with a cut to some squares and the... sounds, then the silohouette, then the pool at the legs then Mera, Skunk, and the other guy's "reactions" plus the growing pool, then more squares and finally the "moneyshot" plus the after. Minus the silhouette and the blood between the legs shot nothing I can't imagine on late night. It would be shocking yeah, but for what we know is happening, not displayed.
Its very sudden and quick (run time of about 30 seconds) and not all of that directly visible either. Its mainly the sounds that make it so damn gross to me, though the blood was NOT helping.

Well I saw the first ep and it was awomse, except for the part with the big huge fat guy, and well that just made me want to throw up, so are there any more disgusting scenes like these in the series cause I might just not watch this at all if it has alot of that stuff in there.

It plays in episode 1, a few minutes in, right afte Kai gets the call from Hashim to meet up with everyone at the Diner. He goes to the music store first and buys a CD by Muro. Then he plays it in the car for maybe 10 seconds or so. The song has a strong reggae sound/feel to it. I can't find it on the soundtrack though, or Muro cd's in general. I also can't find a Muro CD with that same album artwork.
If anyone can find out what that song is I will be truly grateful, It's been driving me nuts.

Overall I thought it was a good series ... great animation, good storyline, good ending with room for more hopefully :D. It's a short series so you can practically watch it in one sitting, and the sound track (by DJ Muro) is simply amazing, it's up there with the Samurai Champloo OST's (Nujabes, Force of Nature, Fat Jon & Tsuchie) & the Afro Samurai OST's (RZA). I plan on buying this series when/if it becomes available in the US... dope dope stuff, makes 'The Boondocks' look like some sunday morning disney channel crap. ;)
