Bang Zoom (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/company.php?id=628) is the studio responsible for the English dub of Haruhi.
I go the limited edition #1 box as well... very well done. Easily the best DVD box I've ever bought, including the JP ones. Does anyone know if the armband will ever be included as a bonus item? The ribbon is nice but I can't wear it; goes right back in the box once I got a look-see.

Unfortunately, the pretty box that it comes in will just sit there empty once its contents are transported to the box that came with the first volume :(

Are all of the Special Editions going to be in separate boxes, or will it be "sleeved" packing like GitS:SAC Special Editions for the rest? Maybe this second box is to hold all the Sp Ed DVDs together, since the 1st box doesn't look like it would hold all 7 DVDs and CDs...

Maybe this second box is to hold all the Sp Ed DVDs together, since the 1st box doesn't look like it would hold all 7 DVDs and CDs...The Special Editions will be in their own boxes, but that's mostly just to keep all the special edition stuff together. The box that came with Special Edition DVD 1 can hold all 4 DVD cases plus 5 CDs. (I'm pretty sure it'll be one of those double-disc DVD cases for the Broadcast Order DVD, rather than two seperate DVD cases.) You can see what it looks like on the RightStuf site here (http://www.rightstuf.com/items/2007-05/11/large/av20851b.jpg).

Actually, it can hold 6 CD cases.
My Mikuru box is for the meantime holding onto my Yuki CD, the headband, and the armband. Just not room for them elsewhere. :heh: It'll probably get the Mikuru CD when it arrives~
Oh, has anyone else been having a problem with their SE box? Mine's sagging in at the top, so I've been putting four DVDs in it at all times to keep it from getting stuck like that. Is this just me?
FatPianoBoy
2007-07-04, 10:40
Mine does that, too. It straightens up when the box is full of DVD's, so I'm not worried about it.

Actually, it can hold 6 CD cases.Oh -- good catch. I forgot the exact number, so I just guestimated by looking at the box. :heh: 6 makes sense -- the four included, plus two extra.
Just got the second DVD (special edition, not that it really matters for this post), and watched a bit of it.
Is it just me, or are there no extra scenes in the four chronological episodes? I could have missed them, but I don't remember seeing any.

I've only watched the Melancholy episodes on the second DVD, but I've noticed a handful of new scenes. The most obvous is the one where Kyon explains why he was alone with Yuki to Taniguchi before school. Before, there weren't any visuals representations of his explanation.

Hm. I'm pretty sure that this was in the broadcast version, but I don't have said broadcast version with me to check. I do remember being amused at the visuals (especially Taniguchi's "usotsuki" and Kyon's "Chi") way back when, though.

Are there any video issues with the eps on the broadcast order disc? From what i've seen from comparison shots, it looks like the issues with the OP sequence are more obvious though i may be wrong.

I've read over on the AnimeOnDVD forums that it probably has to do with reduced bitrate in order to squeeze so many episodes onto one DVD; since there's so much going on in the OP animation, it especially suffers. Apparently, the broadcast-order DVDs are single layer (DVD-5) while the chronological order DVDs are dual layer (DVD-9). I suppose it's open for debate why Bandai (or whomever) would cut that particular corner on a "special edition" item. Then again, IIRC we only have the "broadcast order" in response to last-minute fan appeal, so they may not have had much budget left for the actual discs...
Shin_Battousai
2007-07-07, 02:35
Thanks but i've already read that. However, my concern is about the actual content/episodes not the OP. Since the R2s also had issues with the OP (which you may have already read about) with only 2 eps per disc (DVD-5) and higher bitrate, i'm not really worried about that since it seems to be a DVD specific limitation (eg. being restricted to use MPEG2). I tend to skip some OPs as well once i've already seen it.
The third volume of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is now available for pre-order from the on-line stores.
Just noticed that DVDPacific (http://www.dvdpacific.com/) is now listing Volume 3, both the Special Edition and normal release.
Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya: Volume 3 - Limited Edition (http://www.dvdpacific.com/item.asp?ID=832018) $33.85
Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya: Volume 3 (http://www.dvdpacific.com/item.asp?ID=832015) $17.08
Release date 4th September 2007.
Good news, as was the fact that DVDPacific shipped my Volume 2 Special Edition yesterday :) I was getting a bit worried about that since usually they ship pre-orders several weeks early (the release date for Vol 2 was the 3rd July).
Maaaan, almost thirty bucks! Makes me wish I hadn't already pre-ordered it from RightStuf. >.< They are my preferred store, though. I got the second DVD from them a day early! :p
Ah, I got to get my pre-order in for #3 then. Boy these are the best R1 anime DVD I've ever owned.

Hi, I am totally new to series and was suggested by a friend to check it out.
Anyways, from what I read here and other threads, this show was broadcasted in a somewhat random order for whatever reason. If I go buy the DVD's (not special edition), will I lose out on the experience that many who watched this via fansubs had and does it even really matter? Thanks for any that answer.
** EDIT: Please disregard my question, as I just decided to read the early pages of this thread and found my answer :heh:

yea I was also impressed at her singing also. It didn't sound terrible and in my opinion, I think she sang "Lost my music" much better than "God knows" though...for some reason, it seemed to flow better in the English pacing.

I decided to open up my pillow case that came with the limited edition 3 box, and ti seems the red color was slightly printed off mark.
did anyone else come across this problem?
Mine seemed fine, the colour registration seem pretty acurate on both pillow cases (from boxes 3 and 4)
I think the printing on my pillow cases looked a little odd, but I don't have them with me to check. I know the colors at least looked off, and the colors might not've been aligned on one. Regardless, they're sitting in my boxes rather than wrapped around my pillow. Certainly couldn't drool on Haruhi, now could I?
So a company goes through the trouble and money to license it to sell in a foreign country, why wouldn't they put at least a little effort in the quality of the subtext? I mean they want people to buy the product as oposed to questionable sources but fail to match the quality the "competing" sources provide. While I'm aware discussion of the sources in question is frowned upon I'm more interested in why the licenser doesn't take the time to make the product worth the money they charge for it.
I paid my dues I guess.
Visited AnimeonDVD.com and came up with this: http://www.animeondvd.com/reviews2/disc_reviews/7128.php Any idea what this is? I mean Bandai has already released the complete series, why would they offer another set of DVD?
It's not that unusual for a company to make a re-release of a popular product such as this.
You will notice that it contains two CDs (Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Character CD 6 and Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Character CD 9), as far as I remember these have not been offered before (well, not as part of any previous DVD releases) so it's just a chance to catch those people who missed out on the first Limited Edition DVD release.
I was going to say that the Limited Edition has sold out by now but I notice it still appears to be available. It would therefore imply they are making the re-release just to act as a booster to the product (that is, get it in the shops and on the shelves).
I wonder what version the episode order will be, the Limited or the Regular edition. I assume it will be the regular edition. Edit: I notice it does say "TV Broadcast Previews" so maybe this is just a cheaper version of the Limited Edition release.

Oh I see. This a re-release of Suzumiya Haruhi DVDs. So we will have 3 sets DVDs: regular edition, limited edition and soon coming "Bundle edition".
I suspect the bundle edition will show the anime in broadcast order, in contrast with previous editions w/c shows them in chronological order. This will satisfy those fans who wants to see the anime in broadcast order.
I also believe that the bundle edition will include 2 CDs per every volume. There are 12 Haruhi CD releases: the OP (Boken deshodesho), the ED (Hare hare yukai), Tsumeawase and the 9 character CDs. The OP/ED CDs, tsumeawase and character CD 1 (Haruhi) is already bundled in the limited edition. So the CDs to be bundled will have to be character CDs from 2 to 9. Indeed the volume 1 of bundle edition includes character CD 6 and 9 (Kyon's sister and Kyon).
Anyway I haven't bought any Haruhi DVDs yet. I find both the limited & regular editions to be rather expensive. I'm waiting for a complete edition to come out. The coming release of the bundle edition may change my mind. For a price of a regular edition I will not only get the DVD but 2 CDs as well!

Nothing's firm until there's an announcement from someone who's got the license on the Western side and has turned it over to an ADR studio. Until then, just assume that it's all trolling from the production committee.

Well... I tended to like Wende Lee's work, but Vee does an awesome Haruhi as well (and she probably sings Haruhi better than Lee does, truthfully).
I also think that Vee might be able to capture "happy" Haruhi more than Lee could, just based on Vee's Nanoha work.
Pretty sure the voice cast isn't changing. Only their live asos cast changed.

But Wendee was a better Haruhi IMHO
If they get Vee voicing Haruhi, I will not only break something. I will also set it on fire and then soak the ashes in lye to make sure. And after that, I will soak what's left of the ashes in gasoline just so I can set something on fire again. Am I the only person who just doesn't get what makes her so great?

Good points.
And, really, I don't see a huge difference between Vee and Lee.
In fact, it's pretty clear to me that Vee is channeling Lee's Haruhi to some degree... she's just trying to take the basic Lee Haruhi-voice and improve it a bit (make Haruhi sound a bit younger, a bit more energetic, and a bit more upbeat perhaps). And, in my mind, Vee has succeeded in improving it, to her credit.

Nope. I think she's cute, but her voice, even her singing voice, which is otherwise good, is a bit grating. I'm sure she's a fine voice actress for certain roles, but not
Haruhi. Keep in mind that if she's going to be voicing anyone in the new episodes, it's going to have to be either as an extra or as a replacement for an existing character. There are no new characters in the new episodes (although I guess she could voice chibi Haruhi).
And skill is ageless. Sorry, Kaisos.

"Damned good"? Her singing voice gets on my nerves, and I really don't think she'd make a good Haruhi. Maybe Kyon's sister, if they dub Haruhi-chan. Maybe Tsuruya if her previous dub actress got eaten by a bear or something.

can't say i actually i agree with that but i'm not for or against anything. i usually dont watch english dubs (they frustrate me or make me go mad), but haruhi was the one and only anime i ever watched dubbed. (so far) for a first-timer... i guess it's okay.

Wendee Lee actually has quite a big range, she can sound closer to her age, with characters like Suzuka, and the couple characters she voices in Monster, for examples.

No... just no... it was terrible... the English Light was a pussy compared to the original.
Having just listened to some of Cristina Vee's stuff, she sounds too sharp for my liking. Jagged. Might just be me, but hearing that might make Haruhi sound like a bitch.

Death Note is a good dub, but it's not one of the best. Brad Swaile could've deepened his voice a tiny bit more (however, his laugh is f-in' epic), L was good, Brian Drummund was spot on, and Misa was good.
Death Note is a good dub, but, IMHO, it's not as good as FLCL, Bebop, or Haruhi.

Welp, TV Tokyo aired a special on the Vanishment movie about an hour ago. Included was a few shots of an anime store in LA where some Haruhi fans were there to support the movie. However, there was one shot that should bring some pleasure to people:
http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg4/ultimatemegax/10mai388921.jpg
Since Anime Diet mentioned that they were in LA in the middle of January, it's likely that Mr. Freeman was recording lines for the dub of the new episodes for something. One voice actor may or may not be confirmed!
Edit: After watching the movie below (vvv) he's just asked about how it felt to voice Kyon. Nothing about the new episodes. Sorry.

I'm more than happy with a boxed set. If they package them like the boxed set for the original episodes they could still have individual volumes numbered similar to the japanese dvds. Having BLR and all the extras on the first disc wouldn't be bad this way.

My statement served two purposes: 1. It references a commonly said line in the episodes (and wordplay is a pleasure to perform) and 2. A realization that this release date would give Bandai just over two months from the end of dubbing to get the discs physically made in addition to shipping to distributors and from distributors to their stores (both online and offline). With their past history of delays and the necessity of this series to sell well, the odds are against them.
Granted, they could have delayed work on other releases to quicken the process of this release to get it out while people still have news about the movie fresh in their memory. I would appreciate the release on that date, but until August 17th comes and the set is in someone's hands, there will be doubt of release on this date.
I'm still skeptical about Vee voicing Haruhi until I hear it but I wonder more about Nagato.
The English voice of Haruhi will still be Wendee Lee. Cristina Vee is serving in the same role that Patricia Lee served in 2007: Haruhi in the ASOS Brigade shorts.

Bear in mind the link you supplied was from Amazon. As far as I'm aware this isn't an official announcement from Bandai (at least I haven't seen anything on ANN or AoD (http://www.mania.com/release_dates.php) (or Mania as it is called now)). Amazon is known for posting unconfirmed released dates in the past so this may be just another slip-up.

The ASOS Brigade posted some of the details about the Season 2 set on their Facebook page.
It is $64.98 retail price and will contain 4 DVDs and 1 CD. Release date is still 08/17/10. The DVDs will be both subbed and dubbed with the usual interactive menus. They have included:
CMs (You'll really enjoying watching these :D)
Location Scouting videos (which are really nice to see how accurate Kyoto Animation was)
Behind the Scenes of Aya Hirano's Music Video (for Super Driver. Side note: the music video footage stops after the fourth segment)
The Endless Eight Prologue (which was on the 5.285714 limited edition disc and is three still images with Kyon narrating the prologue from novel 5)
Special Event video (not 100% sure on this)
and the Adventures of the ASOS Brigade episodes on the DVDs.
On the CD will be Super Driver and Tomare! No details on whether the non-vocal tracks will be included.
The bonus features are really nice to get a good view of Nishinomiya (the city where Tanigawa-sensei is from and the basis for the animation) and to see the progression of Hirano's song from the PV to the release day. I've already pre-ordered my copy (regardless of the fact that I have the R2s) and I'd say it's still worth it. Amazon.com will guarantee that the set will get to you on release day (if you live in the continental United States) for $50.
Any news for the UK release though? If not, I suppose I'll get the American version...

45 USD before shipping for the whole of S2? That does sound like a good deal. Depending on whether you count Endless Eight of course.
If you don't care to count Endless Eight, here are a few couple of ways to still justify the $60 $45 price tag:
- Pretend you're paying extra for the music CD!
- Pretend you're paying for a limited-edition Haruhi Suzumiya beverage coaster!
- Pretend that you have to pay for the "bonus" features!
- Pretend you're paying for super-deluxe shipping . . . they've added extra packing material in the form of a spare DVD!
- Pretend you're cool by being an early-adopter of the next greatest thing in anime!
- Pretend that you are a man/woman/child of Anime JesusGod(dess) and that the extra money you're paying is your tithe to the Lord GodHaruhi.
- Pretend you're going on the Haruhi Suzumiya Diet. Buy her stuff, and you won't be able to afford to eat as much!
- Pretend you're working for the procurement office of the CIA and you're paying for a super-secret torture device that is being included in every box of Haruhi Suzumiya 2009!
With that being said, I wonder how reliable that drop date is . . . because I'm tempted to pre-order and I'd rather not do it if they're going to kick the date down the road by several months.
$39 at RightStuf with the same release date listed.

Although I wonder if Amazon will still keep it at that pre order price until then
Amazon's got a price guarantee policy where if it drops while you've got it on order, you get the new price, and of course if it goes up, you pay the original price. So in other words, you get the cheapest price between when you order it and they ship it. When I ordered the first volume special edition for the first season, I had ordered it as soon as it went on preorder, and ended up saving about $5 when the price dropped during the preorder phase (at time of release, it was listed between the price I paid and the price I ordered it for). So if you're able to, preorder is the best way to go.
Don't know if it counts if you order it from Amazon through a third-party supplier, though. I imagine it doesn't.

I don't get why some people have such a hard time with other people calling it a second season. I mean, I could understand it when it was not officially marketed as such, but now that it is being marketed that way (at least to foreign fans)...
It has 14 new episodes. That's a season's worth of new episodes.
It's a second season aired alongside the original season, really.
The main reason this terminology was disputed before is because Kyoto Animation and Kadokawa didn't want to call it that. Well, looks like they're letting Bandai call it that, so as far as I'm concerned, the episodes that first aired in 2009 constitute a second season now. That's a much simpler and more straightforward way of referring to them anyway.
"Lost Episodes" could come across as implying that these episodes were made four years ago, and left on the cutting room floor until today.

Well, I wouldn't really care, except that it's adding to the confusion about episode order and stuff, that was partly because of the achronological first part. I was all for calling it the second season when I first saw it, but there have been a lot of people going "wtf?" about it since then. It's unusual for a second season to fit within the first season chronologically and while still maintaining the flow of the narrative.
But maybe the content of the discs will make it clear how it all fits together, and it won't be problematic.

Having new episodes put right smack dab in the middle of an airing of old episodes is different.
It would be nice if the DVD came with a pamphlet explaining how and why the episodes are ordered the way that they are.
