Pretty Good episode, but hey what's new about this series? IT'S ALL GOOD!

Light can findly have a girlfriend, and one that's pretty and famous too, but he just doesn't seem to be to interested in girls...

LOL, that was great, Light threatens to kill Misa, then Rem threatens to kill Light. Some great checking going on! Rem is alot different from Ryuk. He's smart, straight forward, daring and unpredictable, for sure a good addition to the series!

Rem seems to be a guardian over Misa or just falling for her, BUT COMMON WHO CAN'T? Can't believe he agreed to kill L, I have not idea how this is going to play through.

Good episode, lots of twist and shocking events happened to Light. Can't wait to see how all this plays through, epecially ending it with a cliff hanger that's pretty shocking!

Wow, a surprisingly fantastic episode. I was impressed by how they handled the key line from L & the superb cliffhanger at the very end. Also, Hirano Aya is doing an increasingly good job of making me believe in her portrayal of Misa. The main advantage that the anime has over the manga at this point is that it makes the characters come alive (the seiyuu deserve many kudos for their contribution to this). Just look at Light's expression and listen to how he thinks the final lines of the episode.

Great episode, facial expression ruled here. Totally giving this a 10, nice ending and such.

Misa's VA, Hirano Aya, has definitly done a good job here. Especially with the "Light~" . Funny stuff.

Hey, she's Suzumiyu Haruhi. Who wouldn't? :)

Funny that I picture Rem as being female.

Yet again another great episode, it did well at keeping the same feeling that we were left with at the ending of episode 13. What made this episode for me was L's mention of Light being the first friend he ever had. Its not just a powerful scene, its emotional when you keep the idea that behind the scenes they're trying to 'kill' each other.

Anyway, i'm in the mood to watch the episode again - so i'll give more comments after that. :3

This was excellent. I'm left with emotions beyond that which words can describe.

lol NSW is on a killing spree XD

and arrrrgg! what a cliffhanger of an ep O.o
okey it really looks bad for L now...rem is willing to sacrafice herself to make misa happy...and light is showing up to be a real manipulative bastard >.<

but thats a pretty smart move from light...seen as he will get killed if he kills misa he just uses misa to get rem to kill of L and also herself...that is totally evil but brilliant in a way...couldnt have come up with a better plan if it where me...

and all through it ryuk was laughing his head off...methinks hes the only one that gonna be leaving this battle with the last laugh :heh:

Great as always! I guess Misa really is screwing with Lights plans. I wonder if Rem really will kill L just like that, just as Light thought I also thinks it would be alittle too easy :)

Okay, just rewatched the episode. Its probably my second favourite episodes upto now, with episode 07 being the first. Through out episode 14 you're left with a number of different emotions. Like i mentioned before - the scene that has L mentioning that Light is his 'first ever friend'. Some people would just look at this and not think much of it, but not only does it effect the story in so many ways, it shows that even behind the investigation to find out the true identity of Kira, that friendship can still be a part of it. Having the track called 'Rem' playing for the scene worked perfectly.

There was a new lil' scene added to the episode, it doesn't effect the story in anyway, though i'll place it in a spoiler tag.. knowing that i'll probably get flamed if i don't.

Was having Misa jumping on Light. In the manga she randomly appears in the middle of the street.
Also, this part of the story is where i first started to like Rem more and more - and that ended up with Rem being my fav' character from the story. If you ask me, this is also where one of the best quotes from the story was said:

"If you kill this girl, i'll write your name in my death note and kill you."

Just.. brilliant!

Again I agree with both Omni and Garten regarding the animation quality for this episode, that it went downhill more in the distance and far-off shots, but it's interesting to point out that in the close shots where the camera zooms in the characters the black lines drawn over the character's outlines were more prominent and thick.

While in the previous episode Misa earned my sympathy and won me over with her moeness in this one she just got in my nerves with her slightly squeaky and high-pitched voice and more so that she was nagging and pestering Light to date once a week and forbidding him to date other girls.

Making that aside, I'm certainly satisfied with the confrontations that took place within this episode because we learn that the new players will also get to this crazy ride until the last of consequences, and I'm never left astounded with the mind games that both main rivals throw at each other to measure their respective reactions and look through their intentions.

1. Rem threatening to kill Light, if he dares to lay harm on Misa.
This was the most tense of all the confrontations for episode fourteen. Previously, Rem wouldn't care if Misa either lives or dies, but I GUESS she said that to dissasociate herself from any course of action Misa seeks out to play this dangerous game of cat & mouse.
I believe she grew up to care for Misa once she saw her (Misa) on that day when Jealous died saving her (Misa).

We can witness how Rem frightened the s**t out of Light, because the Shinigami was more than serious to end his game until the last of consequences, and she wouldn't mind to pay the price for breaking rules.

2. L confesses to Light that he regards him as his (L's) friend upon all the investigation team.
The teary-eyed soundtrack used on that particular drama moment would generally make the average viewer to come think of that L was sincere on that statement, but I disagree.

I think from L's tongue-in-cheek terminology to regard someone as a friend is an euphemism to acknowledging that person as his rival; a true, equal match to him.

L made it clear when he and Light came face to face the first time, that he has NO friends and uninterested to be closely related with people. L might have protegeés, acquaintances, people that keep him in contact with the outside world (Watari), however, L prefers not to be emotionally involved with people and instead keeps the relationship strictly professional.

Ryuk and others might have fallen to the literal meaning of L's words but not Light.

I GUESS it was a message intended only for Light to measure his reaction and for him to also understand that L's too going for his ride until the very end, thus elevating their working relationship to an all-out competitive rivalry.

It also serves to communicate to Light that from now on that he and L are walking the same steps, having the same thoughts, and always running on parallel to each other, therefore, it's no use to keep lies and secrets amongst themselves, because as the race to uncover Kira turns more strained and hazard Light must not compromise himself longer to arouse suspicion.

3. In spite that she hates Light, Rem concedes Light's request through Misa to kill L.
This conclusion is the climax for the whole episode; it is poignant, because Rem's going to do what Light wants from Misa, though she clearly recognizes that Light's a trickster and a deceiver beforehand, and yet she cares nothing to see the result of this cat-&-mouse chase.

It's obvious that Light was shaken from Rem's threat, and I GUESS he is pulling all this drama stunt act in a manner so as to have Lisa serving under a life-threatening position involving L. That way he kills two birds with the same stone and clears himself of anymore worries.

What was so pricelessly funny about this drama scene was that Light's eyes were wavering and trembling, as if he was about to cry or more like he being on mercy gratitude to Rem accepting his request.

I really loved the episode, especially

when L states that Light is his first friend. It seems like the only time Light was really thrown off-guard. Perhaps he felt just a little bit the same way.

And when Misa threatens to kill any other girl Light would date instead of her. XD.

I feel like I should have a stomach ache watching L eat so much sugar-saturated food... but it amuses me to watch him eat. Yay box of doughnuts. XD.

Bah at animation quality. That goes from the potential 9 to a 7. Down one more for leaving out some manga stuff (I read as I watch lol...) (and how Misa met Light at the end of the episode... is spiced up but I didn't like the "playful nature"). I would have been impressed if not for the off-shore productions.

Of course, the best moment was when L told Light that he considers him a FRIEND. Knowing the Light up to now, I don't think this piece of information will be given much afterthought. :D

i'm really not liking light right about now. before this episode i thought he was so cool, but now i just don't know anymore. it's also kinda sad how he is L's first friend, it makes me feel really sorry for the guy and it makes me wanna give him a hug! as for misa, i feel sorry for her as well cuz she will never have her love returned, that's what it seems like right now anyway.

this has thus far been a wonderful anime. it rapidly skyrocketed up to my top five favorite anime of all time. with so many twists and turns who knows how it will end. but i really wish that it ends with everyone being friends. that would be awesome, however, unlikely. :heh:

What I wonder about is, if Rem would really die if he killed L. Contrary to some people`s thoughts I believe Rem doesn`t die killing L, since he wouldn`t directly protect Misa`s life with this course of action, L doesn`t even know about her yet and hasn`t nailed her down so far.
If there is another rule instead of "In case a death god protects the human he has fallen for by killing the murderer to prevent that deed, he dies" correct me if I`m wrong. Rem also states that L is just a random human for him, if the translation isn`t off. ps. I actually also picture Rem as female, at least to some degree ^^

The twists just never end in this anime.

First L tells Ligh he is his first friend, (shocking), light was thrown off guard completly. I think this bit of character developement is going to play a major role. Those two being friends, can light really kill his own rival? hmm intresting.

Lol and this misa chick, totally infatuated with light... guess it really dosent matter though, but DAMB man! Light has a friggin model for a girlfriend, and he treats it like nothing... sigh... hes really serious about this whole game.

And yes i call it a game because thats what it seems like more then anything else, on one end we have light and on the other L. Such a great rivalry!

well if rem killed a human on request of someone else i think that could be breaking the rules...and especially with feelings for misa there is just no way to hide that...even if you deny it remloves misa and that alone doing a favor for her would classify it as an act of love...hence remdies as well :(

LOL, Be it watching Ryuk eat apples, Light dramatically snack away on potato chips, or L chugging down sugar... they all easily amuse me. Fan service indeed, and my weird amusement of people's eating habits :heh:

I like Rem. It seems like Rem is the only one who actually scares Light a little because Rem can see through him and isn't easily fooled. :D

I'm pretty baffled at the situation now...Rem is going to kill L, but Rem can't kill L. That would be a stupid ending to Death Note.
So, there'll have to be some dramatic turn of events early in the next episode where Rem dies! It's the only option. L can't be immune to the death note, even if he has no name there can't be such a fatal flaw in the death gods that they can't kill nameless people. And if L was unkillable Ryuk would probably have noticed it and we would have seen some kind of reaction from him. The one to die in the next episode will be Rem not L, just wait and see!

Mystical Lint
2007-01-19, 18:40
This may be kind of obvious but I found it really interesting.
Rem tells them she'll kill L and that she doesn't care if it means it will make Light live longer. That insinuates that L has an impact on how long Light lives. Which means to me that, if left unattended, L would have won the battle of wits between him and Light! At least enough to affect when Light dies.

I may be hoping to see Light succeed... but L is by far my favorite. Good job L!

Other than that, I don't think Rem could die.
I don't know what's gonna happen but...
She says it clear... what she is about do will not mean anything to her. It will be just another dead human.
I believe in order to kill a shinigami... the shinigami has to save their life out of love. Rem might in fact have love... but it remains to be seen if she would actually let it motivate her actions (and not just her words).
What she does at this point in the story is neutral as far as she is concerned and she's just doing what a normal death god (presumably) does. Scribble in their notebook.

aka KILL.

I think both Light and L are portrayed as both protagonist and antagonist. Light's goal is to make the world a better place, but he's using very immoral methods. L wants to stop Kira's murders, but he's not afraid to do some less-than-justified things himself.

Light and L are the ones that bring the forward moment to the show but still I cant get enough of Ryuk lol at the amount of times Ryuk laugh :heh:

Havn't quite got used to Misa's voice >.> her character on the other hand can be Interesting but somehow I don't like her all the much though it is great they include someone like Rem to balance things out.

To the jackasses who keep posting none appropriate spoilers either you cant read the guidelines or youre posts being deleted by the mod escaped youre attention. Please for the love of all that is holy STOP the bullshit the end of the series has already been ruined for multiple people because it. have a little respect for forum mates before NSW goes postal on destroys us all in the blast :upset:

Now episode 14 was full of surprises some i didnt think were going to happen and some i guessed on earlier.

The biggest surprise to me was what Misa's Shinigami said to Light. I literally said holy shit out loud. However Light has reached a new low in my book for what he is doing to Misa granted it was fucking brilliant how he got him to do it, but still shady as hell. before this episode i would have said that Kira and L were at a stalemate now imo Kira has the upper hand. Light has managed to find a way to kill all his enemies in one well placed shot. However I am getting the feeling that its not as simple as it's made out to be. Im just getting that vibe that something else is going to happen. Also Ryuk was awfully quiet the whole time except for the chuckling like he knows something.

I had already had the feeling that L thought of Light as a friend what i didnt count on was him saying it. The fact that he calls Light his first friend and the fact that he is still going to kill L makes the situation even more twisted. If L had not told Light that i would have gone on thinking that it was still a cat and mouse game but now its even worse. I feel bad for Misa for she will die after she has served her purpose when all she wants is too be loved by the person she loves. Over all Light has lost all human emotion he cares for no one and that makes his action even more disgusting in my book

Chill out, Sinestra. I'm sure the vast majority of us have no intention of spoiling anyone's viewing experience. I & others got our posts deleted earlier because we didn't even realized that what we mentioned was considered a spoiler. The mods were fair & courteous about following up with warnings. That's their job, not yours--and the only person who looks bad when you needlessly spew profanity is yourself. :)

Back OT,

it's interesting that you look at L that way. Personally I tend to think that even if he has some friendly feelings toward Light, he's perfectly willing to use a sudden statement like that for the purpose of rattling Light's cage and measuring his reaction. I would argue that Light demonstrates a lot more emotion than L. His emotions aren't nice and cuddly--he's egomaniacal, prone to outbursts of wild fury or glee, easily disgusted & outraged--but they still count as emotions. Overall, L actually demonstrates far less in the way of emotion. He may call Light his friend, but there's no way for either us or Light to know whether he means it.

Wow, that was some evil cliffhanger in the end 0_o ... i wonder how this will go. Especially since we are only on ep14, and it would not take more than a minute for Rem to kill L.

Misa is pretty posessive :) Forbidding Light to date other girls. And Rem threatening to kill Light if he would harm Misa... that was the highlight of the ep. I gues we will see Misa sticking around for a while :p ... tho i feel bad for her.

At first she looked kinda dumb and "bleh" to me, so i didn't care much if Light would manipulate her, but right about now i actually feel sorry for the poor girl.

L calling Light his friend... i highly doubt that he means it, probably just another way to rattle Lights cage in some way.

Can't wait for the next ep >.<

I'm going to go a bit off topic here, so I apologize ahead!

I've couple of more episodes to go before I'll catch up to the anime. Although I don't agree with Sinestra's choice of wording, I actually can sympathize with his sentiment after I, once again, resumed watching this series. This is such a wonderful series with its planning, deliberate pace of revealation, story progression, and etc.. that even the tiniest of hint, the vaguest of the clue can ruin the anime viewing experience, especially to the fans who are enjoying this story for the first time! A casual or a careless spoiler by an experienced Death Note fan can still ruin the enjoyment for an unsuspecting anime viewer even if that experienced fan didn't mean to spoil anything.

Anyway, we have a BAN rule (http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?t=41815) in place which we intend to enforce with vigor and brutality. Everyone should read it! It was already put into a practical demonstration by the good ol' NoSanninWa-san for our benefit. Banning isn't fun, especially banning someone who one has come to read and admire because of the quality of thoughts expressed in his/her posts. Hopefully, there won't be any more casual/careless/intentional spoiler in these Episode Discussion threads or any other threads that only deals with the anime. Everyone is also encouraged to use the http://forums.animesuki.com/images/buttons/report.gif report button which will alert a mod!

P.S. A bit more offtopic-ness in my part, but I must say that episode 9 and 10 were simply awesome. I was pretty much shaking from the overdosage of excitement generated in those episodes. Hence, I was a bit diappointed by the following two episodes (I'm up to ep 12) when one more character was introduced with shinigami power, like it isn't already so unfair for L. Really looking forward to watching 13 and 14! :)

As others have noted already I can't help but wonder if Rem would really die by taking revenge on Light if he were to kill Misa. I was under the impression that this would only happen if a shinigami prolonged someone's life expectancy by preventing the person's death. Which wouldn't be the case here, if she killed Light after Misa was already dead it would only be revenge, not helping her. Seems like the show messed up here to be honest...

Also not sure how Misa would kill any girl that Light would go out with, if she doesn't have her death note. Would she actually go do it the oldfashion way? :p

One other thing I was thinking about just now... Misa traded half of her remaining life span to get the shinigami eyes, but didn't she get Jealous' lifespan added to hers when he prevented her death? Then perhaps half of her remaining life span wasn't that bad, who knows how much lifespan got added to hers already. Just imagine if Jealous had a few hundreds of years in reserve... [edit: I see it was mentioned in ep12 discussion too, guess I didn't read that one properly]

Seeing how Rem agreed to kill L so easily,it wouldn't be farfetched for Misa to ask Rem to kill random girls.

As for the lifespan question,as Ryuk explained to Light, humans don't gain extra lifespan, only Shinigami.

That's not how it works, rewatch the episode where it's explained how a Shinigami can be killed. Unless Rem was in love with Misa and the people written in the notebook were going to kill Misa, Rem would not die.

That was a brilliant episode. Suddenly the show has a new dimension.

The key moment of course was when L said Light was his only friend. But most notable was the contrast between this, plus Misa's obsession with him, and the way the episode takes great pains to emphasise that Light is thinking of nothing but killing. Indeed almost immediately after learning about L's friendship, he takes what would seem like the decisive action if we didn't still have many more episodes to go. Light really does seem like an elemental force of death at the moment. But I can't help but wonder if...
they're setting up some manner of "redemption" for him, some sort of welcome back to the normal ways of the human race. I get the sense that Light has always been distant from absolutely everyone, probably due to being such an unusual person. But now he has someone rather similar who he's in close contact with, and someone else whom he just can't "escape" from, both of whom are very much friendly towards him. Of course, he's talking casually about killing them both at the moment, so there's quite a long way to go, but something's got to happen, or at this rate everyone will end up dead.

But of course, the big question right now is just how is L going to avoid death?

I'm surprised at how many people realized Light's twisted mind only this late.

Wasn't it clear even in the first episode that he was a psycho?
His actions shouldn't be surprising after explaining his view of the world and not hesitating to kill either the fake L, the FBI agents or Ray's wife (fiancee?).

I am in agreement I too deem him as a psychopath . As soon as he tried to kill L ( tv ) I was disgusted and that too not in a plesant way . Light may be intelligent but all serial killers/physcopaths are know to be intelligent too thats how they get away with murder . Take jack the Ripper he was never caught .

Intially when Light was cleansing the world of criminals it was diffrent as soon as he stepped the line and started targetting people who opposed him I started seeing yagami in a diffrent light . And his sense of right or wrong is perverted to a point he belive what he is doing is justified , he gets the same kicks out of killing innocents ( people who oppose him ) as any loon , I seen the same high or the satsified expression on Light's face as serial killer .

It took you that long? Really, the first two killings I can understand as he caught them in the act, but as soon as he started going off trying to be mankinds judge and executioner it should have been obvious what kind of person he was. Never mind his "I want to be a god" ranting.

Did anyone else stop and think about how he's getting these names of people to kill? Mostly they seem to come from watching the news. He kills people simply because someone at a TV station said bad things about them! Talk about a low threshold for guilt. Take Misa's parent's killer for example, how in the world could he have known the guy was guilty? Anyone with a grudge simply has to smear their target enough that they appear on TV, and voila, Kira takes care of the rest. Light is a grade A psycho and that should have been obvious from the get go.

Actually noticed it long time ago .. but till the introduction of Ryuuzaki the Light fangirls were rampant . I couldnt get away with posting something like that .

As for the lifespan question,as Ryuk explained to Light, humans don't gain extra lifespan, only Shinigami.

Not from killing humans with their death note, no. But it was mentioned that Jealous' lifespan was added to the girl he saved (Misa) when Rem told that story.

Maybe a Death God fell in love with that psycho(Light) and that's why he got the Death Note.
