i just burn mine like a data disc i've burnt ~30 fansub dvd's and ~40 CD's. i don't recomend burning them for use on dvd players because most the time you can't put the video on the dvd in the first place.

1. after an eps is complete, would you just store the eps only or will u make video dvd?

Takes me about 2 hours to encode one eps from mpeg4 to mpeg1 for my p3 800, and there are usually 24+ of them in a series, you do the math.

2. will the quality lacken if u make a video dvd?

Well if you are going to watch them on a conventional tv, even if you set the bitrate to 3000 (which is very low), you won't notice much degeneration. At the very least it is much better than VCD.

3. wat software do you use to create a video dvd?

TMPGEng to encode, and TMPGEng Author to....author the VOB files.

Yea, it takes way to much time otherwise. Unless you don't mind wasting a few days just make data dvd's. :)

Just got my DVD burner so I have not burnt a lot of DVDs yet. However, my plan is to burn them as data DVDs. Takes less time than encoding and I don't care about watching the shows on a TV. To prevent disasters if my hard drive crashes while waiting for a complete series to burn, I plan to burn the files to a DVD+RW for backup, then transfer them to a DVD+/-R when the series is done.

Thanks for this thread. I plan to get a DVD-RW as my next PC upgrade. I personaly would just archive every thing on data DVD, but my mother likes anime (I know, don't ask how that started.) and has been bugging me to make full metal panic fumoffu on somthing she could play on her TV (36" tv vs 14" monitor).

I got her a DVD player that will play burned DVD's and DVD-RW for Xmass . . . I was going to wait for fumoffu to get licensed and buy it for her on DVD, but I was thinking I would try to make it a video DVD. any one have any advice for doing so? (I do have multiple PC's if it would take a few days to burn, but would rather not do alot of swaping hard ware)

Making dvd's for dvd players was too time consuming so when I got a new computer I hooked my old PC to my TV. Works great, but if you have an HDTV you'll need a vga to component transcoder to get the best picture quality.

i never really found it very time consuming to convert my avi's to be able to be played on a dvd player...usually takes about 35 min or so for one ep..using tmpgenc to encode..usually just queue it up over night...next day author it with tmpgenc dvdauthor (and use their utility to burn). MySonic dvd..i found to be reeeaaalllly slow when burning..and even slower when converting the files and their encoding you don't get as many options as you do with tmpgenc (which is also considered slow..but is alot faster than mysonic dvd). At most for viewing i have gotten 12 (could probably fit more if i tried) eps onto 1 dvdrw (actually my only burnable dvd! ha!).

As for quality..i lower it to 2000 and change the sound to 256 and I don't notice any difference in quality of the fansub. I also think it takes me a bit longer to encode because i change the sources aspect ratio to be able to fit fully on my TV's screen (so the subs don't go off the screen)

Another thing is that i find i take more time making menus and arranging things than i do trying to convert the media (well maybe not..but you get sucked into making them look cool).

ps. i'm on a p4 2.26 :d

ermm, well heres another question

as mentioned by go-lytely, it is very time consuming to make a video dvd so can i use a tv to act as a monitor?

if so, what software or hardware would you need?

You'd need a graphics card with tv-out or a dedicated tv-out card (since many graphic cards nowadays have a tv-out it's propably hard to find tv-out cards).
When you have installed such a card you just use your TV as a second monitor. You can choose to clone the picture of your computer monitor to the tv screen or let it have a second desktop.
You don't need any extra software (besides the card drivers :p ).

You're going to have to do a bit of research to save yourself some pains in the long run. Blank DVDs come in + or - formats (DVD+R/RW or DVD-R/RW). Most conventional DVD players will play either format but not both. So you'll have to find out what you have for a DVD player first. Then you can equip your PC with a burner that can burn that type. Or if you got the cash, buy a burner that can burn all the formats. Sony has an external DVD burner (DRX-510UL) which is considered one of the best. Then you can burn both formats and not worry about anything but finding a consistent source of cheap blank DVDs.

Cheap blank DVDs? Since they hold so much more data compared to CDs I would rather pay a bit more for high-quality ones. Losing data on a few DVDs is almost as bad as losing your hard drive. :p

Ah you are right. What I meant is a cheap source of good quality blank DVDs... my fault. lol! Thanks for the correction! :heh:

Actually, I have a excellent source.... not sure if its open to the public but I practically pay nothing for the amount of dvd-r, cd-r and rw (ea. spool contains 50+) not sure about the cases. I guess if your interest let me know because I just recently bought a dvd recorder and I'm playing around with it! so if I mess up I'm not to upset.

DVD-RWs are funny, how do most people use them anyways? Programs like DLA and Roxio allows you to format it, then just drag and drop your data. So the next time when you need to reuse it, just format the RW disc, and it's good as new. However, some people like to use it as a data disc, and just burn things onto the disc without formatting it, but then, to reuse the disc, you'd have to erase it or something, isn't it kind of bad to the disc itself?
Since I'm planning on getting a Plextor DVD burner in the future, I'd just like to know about the device, I know Sony DRX/Dru 510 takes 1 minute to format a DVD-RW disc and 9 minutes to burn about 1.2 gigs of data, time-wise, i thought it was pretty good. and as a formatted disc, it's basically like a harddrive, you can just dragN'drop add/delete however you want. but what i want to know is...if you're burning it without formatting the disc, but as a data disc, can you just burn 3gigs of data, then add/delete more later on using the same program without erasing the previous data on the RW disc?

you should be able to..but why dont you just collect 4.8 gig of data then burn it at one go?dvd-rws are cheap anyway...a few wont cost you that much :)
