No pr0n in Clannad?
I just may end up helping out with this :D
Edit: Provided I can wrap my head around the formatting :twitch:
velocity7

Well, formatting exists so translators/editors get control over things like if pause events and the like occur, so there's a good reason why it's there.

I understand the purpose. What I don't understand is what I (the translator) am supposed do about it, given that I have no idea how it works.

I thought Translators suppose to change gobble-giddy into English?
Or I'm I wrong? :p
Japanese gobble-giddy, yes, but this programming stuff (http://project.baka-tsuki.net/index.php?title=Clannad:Guidelines) is moonspeak to me :confused:
I understand how much easier it is on the editors for the translators to preserve/enter all this stuff as they're going through, and I'm willing to do cooperate, but I'm at least eight years behind in computer science (the last computer we bought was advertised to be Y2K compatible) :heh:
It says that if you can't abide by the guidelines to just post your translation in <pre> tags, but I'm loathe to do that, since I can imagine what the poor soul who has to edit it will go through. Mostly what I don't get is this stuff: Event tags such as "\size{}", "\p", "\r", etc. should be preserved at all times. If different positioning is required for creative/technical reasons, don't hesitate to make such changes.
# Unless the Japanese text has used it, "\r" and "\n" cannot be used at all. We already have automatic line breaking in place, so there's no need to do line breaking on your part, unless the script calls for it (for example, two people speak at the same time).
EXCEPTION: For people with voice patches... if the script calls for certain event tags such as pauses to be replaced by \wait{} due to some issues from transferring the PS2 script to PC, please make those changes and comment them in as necessary.
I'm fine with keeping all the coding the same, but how do I know when to change something and what to change it to?
velocity7
2007-02-05, 00:31
Well, for example, if it's something like
"nani ka \pukotteiru deshou"
the original line was
"nani ka ukotteiru deshou"
which translates to
"What might have happened?"
Use your own discretion on where the \p goes.
The EXCEPTION does apply, but if you don't have a copy of the game handy to listen to the voices and see how the event turns out, don't worry about it. Just preserve the event tag as necessary, and it will be dealt with later.
As for the \m{A} and \m{B}, that's just naming. \m{} simply gets the name that's saved in Options.
FatPianoBoy
2007-02-05, 19:48
Ah, okay. I think I've got most of it now.
Two more things: how do I know which name is saved in options? There are five names with the \m{A} tag.
Also, are we going from the PC game or the PS2 version? I assumed PC, but I don't think that version has any voice work.
velocity7
2007-02-05, 22:42
Actually, that stuff was spoilers. I modified the Guidelines as necessary so that won't be there anymore. Besides, they all call the same thing.
We'll be translating the PC version, it's exactly the same as the PS2. Though at the moment, I'm working off a voice patch. :p
If we finish this and people demand a PS2 version, I may consider it.

Reading the translation, I remarked you didn't translate what the girl shouted at the end of the fantasy world.
It basically reveal her identity but it only appear in a short fmv.

But hey, if you check Recent Changes on the wiki, you'll always see there's at least something going on. For the most part. ;)
Wish I had more time to help out with the editing over there... :(
But I guess since I still haven't gone through the game yet, it's likely I would get spoiled even if I did commit myself to the editing team.

Just edit each individual section as you play along, like what I am doing right now. velocity7 has designed the wiki into separate sections for each character (and into different "days" as well), so you won't be spoiled if you avoid reading a section before you read it in the game itself.

Hi! I'm Hansi, a Spanish Key Fan. Here in Spain, a group of people is very interested in creating their own patch, that would be able to translate the novel to the Spanish.
I take to long time looking for the method to create the patch, but we, without help, are not able. You can help us?
Thank you very much by your attention, we waited for answer.

Really looking forward to the translation release, not understanding japanese kinda sucks sometimes :(
Just in case anyone was wondering, the game runs under wine on a Linux installation
http://img129.imageshack.us/img129/896/screenshotox9.th.jpg (http://img129.imageshack.us/my.php?image=screenshotox9.jpg)
However, you have to do some work to get the Japanese locale working. However, every step needed is described in this (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=383628) thread from the ubuntu forums. Installation for other distros should be pretty similar

I'm up for supporting Linux after I've finished with getting the entire thing done for Windows at least. Will need a bit of time, and a lot programmers looking at how good xclannad can get the job done with the current RLdev code as it is.

You are just awesome man. :p I doubt more than a handful of translators can keep up with for your pace. Not that it counts for much, but I for one can't. Keep up the good work!
This is just awesome! I didn't think Nagisa's route would be finished until the 22nd at the earliest. :) Maybe my Christmas translation phase completion prediction wasn't too far off.
In the editing phase, do you need to know Japanese in order to participate? Or is it just checking to see if it is in proper English?
velocity7
2007-11-10, 15:55
Even though translation would likely be done by then, proofreading is still a very big necessity.
Editors don't need to know Japanese, but that would be helpful. The most important part is proper English spelling/grammar, but if changes demand that the meaning of a sentence be changed, that is better left to a proficient Japanese translator.

Well, there's a reason for the term eroge...
In that respect, CLANNAD does not have any ero scenes, so it can hardly be called an eroge.

Most of the times, eroge VN (since eroge is a general mention for any game with +18 material, not only VN) are solely based on the plot, and the ero scenes are "rewards".
Seriously, these are not even part of importance of a VN story (some exception though), thus It shouldn't really change anything for the plot itself.
The fact there are ero scenes in a said VN doesn't lower its quality at all. It is ridiculous to think that if you remove them, the thing would be better. that's a mistake.
More likely, you can simply skip by using CTRL for most VN anyway. (That said, many people are missing gems like Tsukihime, just because of the mere mention of ero... *sigh* )
Kaioshin Sama
2007-11-13, 14:20
Yes, for some reason people assume that an ero scene in a VN cheapens it somehow and makes it an overall weaker game. I personally think if it becomes intrusive to the main plot it might, but then again if that were the case it probably isn't a game worth playing for the plot anyway. Sex is a natural part of life, and I don't think people really need to be afraid of it.
I still love how people get so upset when somebody calls Clannad an eroge though. I doubt anybody means it as an insult, nor should it be considered as such really.

Yeah, but it's more like with which characters say with Air or even with Kanon. I really can't see any of those character doing it anytime soon. >.>
The real reason I am not playing Visual Novels is probably because the games I want to play have no translations out. Though only 2 games I want to play are Kanon and Clannad. xD
OT:Just wondering if I get Kanon with the patch(was like 50% completed). Are there actual rootes that are completed? If yes which ones?

At least it's much better to tell them that it's not an Erotic game than letting them have an idea for a long time that it's an Erotic game. And I am not upset at all if some peeps call them erogame since people thought that KEY games are erotic, they just don't have an idea, that's what I always kept in mind.

That's true as well, if that's what's somebody's looking for, Clannad isn't going to be up their alley. Excellent point.
OT:Just wondering if I get Kanon with the patch(was like 50% completed). Are there actual rootes that are completed?
No. Roughly the first half of the game was translated (all character routes partially complete), some routes a bit more complete than others.
I personally think if it becomes intrusive to the main plot it might, but then again if that were the case it probably isn't a game worth playing for the plot anyway.
The problem is that
a) with the "pure love" genre, ero scenes are often tacked on, with little to no buildup. In some cases, the romantic element isn't developed enough (if at all) to justify sexual situations
b) often, these scenes are horribly written, with the scenarist (clearly not an erotica writer) hastily throwing them together to satisfy a market expectation

This is mostly true but...
I have to say Crescendo blew that stereotype out of the water... the ero scenes in that game flowed in with the story near flawlessly, and the scenes were extremely well portrayed.
However many of the games with really really good plots, like Key's Kanon and Air, I definitely agree with you on those points.

You can found in here (http://aoi.hiranomoe.com/upload/Seen-0.92.rar)
And if you find any bug you can report in here (http://aoindonesia.net/showthread.php?t=1232) too

I'm not sure if that patch works, as there are a lot of hacks we introduced into the code that may cause issues. Not to mention, the wiki changes on a daily basis, so a lot of the changes come in may not make it into that particular patch. That said, I haven't tried that patch, but I would advise against using it for the time being.
EDIT: Not to mention registering for that forum is horrendous. Requiring introduction and everything? =/

Well...the Baka-Tsuki site says 86% translation complete over a month ago. However, if they're going at the same rate, it will be close to 100% which is probably why there is a working patch right now. However, the translated text needs some extensive editing, even on the earlier pages.
Translation is nearing completion, but editing, QC, and play testing I would assume are just beginning.

Firefox/IE use a different encoding and font rendering system than the rest of the operative system. For enabling Japanese support:
1) Have your Windows install CD handy
2) Go to the Control Panel - > date,time,Language and Regional Configuration -> Third tab -> click on the japanese checkbox -> apply -> follow on-screen instructions. (or follow (http://newton.uor.edu/Departments&Programs/AsianStudiesDept/Language/asianlanguageinstallation_XP.html) this practical guide, and only follow the instructions for Japanese.)

It really depends how people enjoy either th game or anime actually.
That aside, the "problem" here is the fact the anime will be obviously faster than the game, and the later is pretty long (I played Misae's route only so far, but it is really big, despite i could read it is the shortest route in the game).
In such case, it would be actually better to finish the anime first, as you would probably still have things to discover in the game (skipped points etc). The reversed way works only as "enjoy to see the major plot points being animated, and how the script is adapted", as I believe everything in the anime is already in the game.
Another possibility is to actually play the "secondary character" paths first, though we still don't have a guarantee of how the anime will end (as it might turn into more than 1 season...)

doubt about 2nd season since kyo-ani will have more importent things to do (:Dharuhi:D) so thats not likely
at least not in the near future
but what do you mean the misae's route
isnt that like saying sayuri's or akiko's route

All of the side characters have extensive backstories, there is enough text there to call each of them an "arc". Obviously, it's not a romantic relationship, but there is still a lot of character development.
Clannad is a huge game (mine is 2.7 GB), now you know why. The side character arcs probably take up a lot of unique CGs.
That aside, the "problem" here is the fact the anime will be obviously faster than the game, and the later is pretty long
I think it really depends on how much time you want to devote to the visual novel. Clannad (TV) is going on a one month hiatus soon and will probably end around April 2008. Will you finish in 5 months? If there is no second season that is.

KyoAni might do a 2nd season of Clannad after Haruhi, which is already under contract and development.
And unlike Kanon, Clannad has routes for the side characters as well, so you do get to know pretty much everyone.

If you know how long CLANNAD game is, you probably will have second thoughts on that, anyway, we're at Eps. 12, and the only finished arc is Fuuko... I can see them fitting the Tomoya's school life with the girls in a 24 eps. but including the after story? I don't think so. The chance is, a 24 eps then a break, then the continuation which can fit in a 6 to 12 eps. But that's just my opinion. And yes, they have they're own stories which can possibly be an entire episode. Specially, I think the transition from school life to after story will look weird if they decide to do it 24eps. :heh::heh::heh:
Takuto19
2007-12-16, 10:55
Yeah it depends how many of the arcs Kyo-Ani are planning on doing, with the 24 epsiodes planned and only Fuuko's arc is finished and almost half way through, unless there gonna leave some peoples arcs out, such as Misae's, which i can see them doing.
I would love to see a second season and doing the other arcs that might be left out but to be honest i can't see it, but you never know.
Personally I think I'll wait for baka tsuki final release. Everyone over there has put so mcuh effort towards it, that I think it is only respectful to wait for what they consider is the final release.

Problem is, even if they cut out those side character's stories, the story of the 5 girl can still span up to 24 eps., and After Story isn't included in that equation yet, that's why there's a big possibility that they'll do a 24+12 or possibly just 6 (we wouldn't like to see a TOEI version of CLANNAD now do we or another confusing AIR?). Anyway, we're on Eps. 12 now, let's assume Kotomi will have 4 episode. So perhaps, it will end on Eps, 14, then Kyou can have a 3 eps. since she's already build up her route because of her constant screen time (we're now 17 eps.), after that, Tomoyo, might kicked some 4 eps. as well, making it, 21 eps., now, we have Nagisa's school life which we can say, 3 eps. See what I mean, the only story KyoAni might tackle this season is about Tomoya's school life. I already cut out those side stories despite I don't think it will be cut out. Oh... I forgot Mei (the blue pony tailed haired loli in OP sequence), anyway, let's ignore her, they showed her, so she should appear later XD
Also, CLANNAD script story > AIR+KANON combined. I think the ratio is 5:4,
assuming we remove the side character's stories... the ratio will be 1:1 which is still big because we're talking about a script that equal's AIR+KANON combined.
Which reminds me... shouldn't this discussion be in the speculation thread? :heh::heh::heh::heh:

I agree, i tested abit of the game with that translation patch and there's still alot thats not been translated in it, such as the Interludes between some days and the opening isn't done either. As well with the option screen and everything.

Hold on, isn't there a possibility that KyoAni will show both Haruhi and Clannad at the same time?
I guess many world prefer that they mantain their 1 show per season approach. Most companies that try to cover too much end up scattering their budget beyond what is convenient. Moreover, KyoAni's so-called animation prowess is partly because they endevour themselves to a single show per season.

I'm guessing your both using the translation patch....
Hmm, you might be able to get past it by loading the original SEEN (if you made a back-up) file and playing past the bit of text that's broke, then saving, and then putting the translated SEEN file and load the game.
I had a similar problem with Planetarian where i couldn't load the opening movie with the patch so i started it in japanese, saved after the part that was freezing, installed the patch then loaded the game.
Hope this helps.

I'm amused at how eager people are jumping onto the unofficial builds of the translation patches. Wow, I didn't think anyone used Windows ME when it came out, let alone now...
And on a related note, I wouldn't know where to find a guide to install East Asian language support on it, but try looking in the control panel for something involving languages.
There's a Regional Settings section, but it doesn't have the option for a Japanese locale. I have Japanese IME with language pack installed, but that only works for the internet, apparently. And what about Japanese fonts? Any specific names I should search for, or should I just do a search for 'Japanese fonts'?

EDIT: Circa 12/27/07 - (Lol.. Circa..)
You have to complete NEARLY all 8 routes in a specific order.Misae -> Tomoyo -> Yukine -> Ryou -> Kyou -> Kappei -> Mei Sunohara -> Ichinose -> Fuuko -> Koumura -> Nagisa w/ afterstory (Ichinose and Fuuko are completely independent from the other routes, so you can do them whenever you want, you probably get all the CGs.
Also, I'm using the unofficial English patch, but every time a character in the VN says something, the get_font window thing shows up, and the character voices don't play. It also happens during the dream world/alternate reality, but I'm guessing that it's not translated yet, 'cuz I can't see any text at all in the dream world/alternate reality areas.
The Kotomi route is REALLY similar to the anime, for what I've seen of the anime so far. Which is up to episode 12. But I guess Tomoya still ends up with Nagisa, right?

When the translation is all complete how will you go about playing it? Get the Japanese version of the game then just put the file in where it needs to go or is it going to be more complicated, like changing your whole windows font to Japanese (this doesn't appeal to me as I changed mine to Chinese once on accident and it took awhile to fix it).
I don't really have the knowhow to incorporate the current translations into the game without a detailed walk though, so I'm hoping when its all finished it will be simpler to do, but I definitely want to play the game when its finally translated as I've become quite the Clannad addict from just watching the Anime.
I should probably just learn Japanese to make this easier in the future.

They don't know how they're going to release the patch. And it wouldn't be the whole font you have to change (as that's only available in Vista anyway), but just the System Locale setting.
I don't the the option for a Japanese locale, but the unofficial English patch works fine for me without it. Except for the problems I already talked about, but I can fix them by re-installing the game, I guess.. By the way, how would I go about re-installing it so as to not lose any save files or CG files? I found out something while playing on Yukine's route. It seems that since I did Tomoyo's route (without doing Misae's route) I still got an orb of light. It looks like they appear on the main menu screen. It seems that you can get an orb of light by completing a path that was required before you do the path that you're doing, without getting an orb of light from the required path - like mentioned above - first.

You get one of the lights at the end of most routes. Misae is an exception, since you get her's in the middle of Tomoyo's route right after you beat Misae's route. I believe there's one other that you must wait til After Story to get.

So about the whole light thing, I played Tomoyo's path first. I didn't notice anything about the lights until I had played a few other routes (including Misae's), so now I'm trying to go back and get one light that I should've gotten along the way. I'm pretty sure its either Tomoyo's or Misae's since i screwed up the route play-order, but I can't seem to get it no matter how many times I replay either route. So does this mean I won't be able to get to the after story just because I messed up the play order?

From the wiki:
Recently, Key has announced there will be a Full Voice version of CLANNAD PC released on February 29, 2008[1] (http://forums.visualnews.net/showpost.php?p=38764&postcount=156). This has affected plans on distribution. Originally, a patch that allowed those who had/did not have the voice patch to be able to play. Now two patches will likely have to be issued, including one for the Full Voice version. --Velocity7 (http://www.baka-tsuki.net/project/index.php?title=User:Velocity7) 11:41, 31 December 2007 (PST)
From the wiki:

so there will be a patch for the original clannad (with or without voice patch) and also a patch for full voice version clannad, that made my day :D
anyway happy new year guys :)

I'm a bit confused now.
So is the patch officially finished now because I see links for the patch everywhere while the last time I checked was that the project was at 75 to 80ish percent complete.

It's an unofficial patch with a few small errors, and After Story untranslated. But other than that it's fine.

I was wondering if anybody could help me out with this. I just installed the game and the voice patch, and the newest seen file but I'm unable to turn on Japanese Locale. When i try it says i need the windows CD which I no longer can find, I looked for about 2 hours.
Is there anywhere I can get the font off the net? There was a option to just browse and find the file itself to install it, but i havent had any luck yet. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
Btw when I try to run it without Japanese Locale it freezes as soon as you start the new game, you get music but a blank blue textbox on the bottem and everything else is white.
Edit: Okay I found my CD and i installed fonts and I have it on the bottem corner of my task bar and all, but the game still freeze's at the very beggining. Any suggestions?

Hm, there is a Chinese already-voice-patched CLANNAD torrent floating around. That one doesn't require you to be in Japanese system locale, but I am not sure if it requires you to be in Chinese sysloc. It might just be your saving grace.
That is already threading in dangerous waters though

After reading a little bit after it when they're talking with Misae, it seems like either Akio or she ran to get the ball and took the guy out. SEEN0429 deals with the Baseball Ending, just Akio assembling a motley crew of a baseball team to take on the challenge of the rival town's baseball team. No orb, but very fun.

That wasn't the question Kinny :heh:
fef: as far as I could read, I think that Akio and Youhei tried to get the ball buy running like nuts, however, Misae got it and she could do a long throw to Tomoya, putting the runner out

Are there plans to replace the original OP vid with a subbed version? NNL did a subbed version of the OP vid years ago, but it's in AVI format, and there was a TL error that wasn't spotted until it was too late.

Check the main page of the translation project (http://www.baka-tsuki.net/project/index.php?title=Clannad):
The SEEN file is "updated enough", so Sanae, Akio, Yuusuke routes are translated, along with Kyou's scene in AS.

I know. No Name Losers was such a terrible fansub group with no QC at all. They deserve to be forgotten.
spare NNL, they did all their job unpaid, though they create some internet drama with their wind translation, but i respect them for what they done = )

There is a situation which was quite weird in SEEN2503 (http://www.baka-tsuki.net/project/index.php?title=Clannad:SEEN2503), and I left a message on it, though it might be overlooked/missed, so I posts here.
here is the bizarre occurance
<0256> Our mouths gradually separated.
// 口がようやく離れた。
<0257> Tomoyo's rough breathing.
// 智代の荒い息。
<0258> The smell of the cucurbita was strong... as if it were a girl's scent.
// カボチャの匂いよりも強く…女の色香のような香りがした。
<0259> Her back stiffened up.
// 背筋がぞくっとするような。
<0260> This time, I reach out my hands.
// 今度は手が伸びてくる。
<0261> They go towards her neck.
// それが首に宛われる。
<0262> My thumbs felt the texture of her Adam's apple.
// ふたつの親指が優しく喉仏をまさぐった。
<0263> No matter what, it felt good.
// なんでも心地よかった。
<0264> Grugg!
// ぎゅっ!
<0265> Something strong went into my thumbs.
// 親指に力が込められていた。
<0266> \{\m{B}} "Guaahh..."
// \{\m{B}}「ぐあ…」
<0267> \{Tomoyo} "You'll feel at ease soon..."
// \{智代}「すぐ楽になるから…」
<0268> Gggghhh...
// ぐぐぐぐぐ…
<0269> \{\m{B}} "Daaah---!!"
// \{\m{B}}「だあぁぁーーっ!」
<0270> I break off from Tomoyo's hands, falling to the floor, getting away.
// 俺は智代の両手を振りきって、床を転げて、逃げる。
<0271> \{Tomoyo} "What's wrong, \m{B}? There's still more."
// \{智代}「どうした、\m{B}。まだ続くぞ」
<0272> \{\m{B}} "Like...?"
// \{\m{B}}「なんてだよ…」
<0273> \{Tomoyo} "Farewell... my darling."
// \{智代}「さようなら…愛しい人」
<0274> \{\m{B}} "That's not acting a love scene, that's a murder scene!!"
// \{\m{B}}「それ濡れ場じゃなくて、殺人現場の回想シーンだっ!!」
<0275> \{\m{B}} "If you do that, I'm going to die!"
// \{\m{B}}「演じきってたら、俺、死んでただろっ!」
<0276> \{Tomoyo} "That's why I asked you if it was okay."
// \{智代}「だから、訊いたんだ。本当にいいのか、と」
<0277> \{\m{B}} "........."
// \{\m{B}}「………」
<0278> \{Tomoyo} "Of course, I didn't plan on making it so strong so you'd die, but surprisingly it was painful..."
// \{智代}「もちろん、死ぬほど強くやるつもりはなかったが、案外苦しそうだったな…」
As you might see, the little scene involves Tomoyo and Tomoya who were acting like a romance scene in a TV soap. However, Tomoya begins to strangle Tomoya, mimicking a murder scene instead.
The problem is actually the early part, where it almost look like it is Tomoya who is moving his arms, which doesn't make sense with his pain, his complaints and Tomoyo claiming she wasn't attempting to strangle him, with the "farewell, darling."
I take it Baka-Tsuki still has active editors currently working on the translation? - I was a bit concerned by the last updated times on their main page.
I'm interested in helping the translation along with both Japanese and English.

From checking their "Recent changes" page everyday, it seems like the pages are still undergoing editing. It seems like only SEEN 6801 is actively being translated at the present moment by Todkapuz. This is at 77%, and the translator made the prediction on 01/13/08 that he would be finished by 01/28/08 at the pace he had been going.
RoofClimber1 has made some recent TL progress on 6802, but it was his first in like a month, and he hasn't made any since, so I do not know how long that is going to take. This is at 6%.
6800 used to be making steady progress, but it stalled out in like mid-December. I don't know if that is being translated by anyone at the moment and is in planning for a massive upload of all the text at once or not. As it is now, section "0" of 6800 is 90% complete, and the other parts are 0% complete, making the overall progress on that seen 41%.
6803 is a short scene of about 300 lines, and that is about 58% completed. By the time the other 3 are translated, I'm predicting the remaining parts of 6803 will be translated.
Keep in mind that these are absolutely gigantic seens. Seen 6800 is 8000 lines, 6801 is 2000 lines, and 6802 is 3000 lines. For comparison, an average fansub is about 200-300 lines of translation. So, finishing the translation of 13,000 lines is about the same as fansubbing 52 episodes of an anime. Of course, the text is already written out for you, so the translation is a little easier.
Since there are 3600 lines of 6800 and 1500 lines of 6801 translated, it means that the overall completion of after story is 5,100/13,000 lines, roughly 39%. That would put the overall completion at 91% of the translation phase.
EDIT: Of course, it's Velocity7's call for the official percentage of the project and what is actually being done. I'm just a girl who went math crazy for a couple minutes. ^_^
EDIT2: Whoops, guess I was wrong about 6800. It looks like it is being translated but not really frequently uploaded, as Velocity7 added like 700 lines of text early January. So, if I got it right, 6800 is being translated from behind the lines and uploaded every so often in huge batches, 6801 is steadily being translated, 6802 is making little to no progress, 6803 is a shorty that will be completed soon, I'm sure, and 6900 is completed.
When all of those are completed, then the entire chart should be bold. :)
EDIT3: I guess I'm going to be using this for my own tracking purposes. Updated for 1,000 lines added by Velocity7 just now.

That will actually be great. If you're fluent in Japanese, you can TransCheck the SEEN files, since TransChecker is what the Project is actually lacking. Anyway, there are active editors working on the files.

They update that everytime they finish a route, not everytime they do an update.
And there was a big update on 6800 about a week ago.

We all work a little differently... I like to translate it "on the wiki" as I bounce from computer to computer each time... Velocity (and he's suggested it to me) does all his translation offline then plops in a massive chunk at a time.
I'm still shooting for the 28th for my first pass... few things here and there that will ened to be fixed.... like only recently have I noticed "Pops" is the perferred translation of "Ossan" etc.. (I happen to like leaving Japanese names and phrases in when I do translations for myself... but thats just me... ) and of course put all the translations on the primary line (jsut doing it as comment the first time trhough so I can see my own edits later)

Hehe...
I've got just over 400 lines left at the moment.. so yeah... I will probably come in early... but yes, even when I made the prediction, I tacked a few extra days... that is because I am on call 24/7 ... and I know in the past there have been days I've worked late and just haven't felt like doing anything... so didn't want to put a goal on myself I couldn't meet...
But yeah, I'll probably be done by the end of the week, more than likely... and should have my self-consistancy check closed out by my birthday. Sadly since I don't have experience in any of the other seens... there will still be some stylistic things that will need to be cared for...
Now I'm just trying to decide if I am up to the challenge to helping on the last ones.... :) when i started 6801 .. i ddint know quite how large it really was :) 6802 is half-again larger.... *sighs* ...
Eh... don't need to thank me... I'm far from a perfect translator.... sides.. I'm doing it for selfish reasons.. I wanna play it! (what can I say... Visual novels like these are just fun... read/played several of them.... sadly outside of the ones that have been translated... I'm still too slow with the native Japanese ones to fully enjoy it (miss important little tid bits here and there). Besides, I think the whole concept is very cool... only wish I got involved earlier... oh well... next project maybe) ... Vel7 on the other hand... that's a different story. ~だんごだんご大家族~

Actually, I was wondering which SEEN you'd work on after 6801 myself. I didn't know if you'd help out with 6800, start on 6802, or finish up 6803 which only has like 100 or so lines left...

January 31st, the day that Clannad 16 is set to air? :)
Velocity7's present rate is 1000 lines every 15 days, which is 66.7 lines a day. There are presently 3,420 lines out of 8,251 translated. At this rate, he will finish SEEN 6800 is 72 days, which is April 1st 2008.
If you are planning to finish 6801 on the 31st with finalized translation and move onto 6802, that is 3143 lines to translate. At 100 lines a day, which is your present pace, you would be finished in 31 days, or March 2nd. That is the rough translation time. Since you are predicting 3 to finalize a 2,000 line one, proportionally that is 5 days. That would put the 6802 completion date at March 7th.
This is all dependant of present rates, and assuming that you two are the only ones who do translation. It doesn't compensate for sudden free time where one of you can translate more, break times, and any other things that can happen.
In other words, my guesses are always far off. :) But, that's just to show you that 6800 is so big that it is unlikely that he'd start 6802 before you had a chance, unless he abandons 6800. Because in perspective, translating the rest of 6800 is equivalent to translating 6801 and 6802.
Therefore, I need to stop going math crazy sometime soon.

I dont know.. I haven't seen any others that are seriously doing anything in awhile... doesn't mean there are not any... but I dunno... I probably will roll on.
All I DO know is that Feb 29th will throw a wrench in it all.... hopefully no strange changes to any of the seens or encoding etc.... else life won't be fun (I want the full voice version... so much more fun).
Noticed the "fansubber" tag... what role do you typically play in the process?

oh yeah.... nothing wrong with math.... it's fun... do the same thing from time to time... but thats weird.. I'm averaging more than V7? doesnt make sense.
I'm an editor for Moetaku Fansubs. I don't know a thing about Japanese, and I don't know all the tricky moves, so I just work to make English sound more English. ^_^
I was considering helping out with the editing of the project, but I'm just bad at conforming to guidelines and all. Like, I read the guideline saying "Tomoya speaks in present tense", and then I started to edit 0414, and I like killed everything of the mood. So, I just backed out and cancelled.
Have you played through most of the game Chrissie?
I think better lines come out once you're in *that* mood :P

Nope. Not really at all. I'm presently on April 26th following Fuuko's walkthrough. I have absolutely no idea what SEEN I'm on, but it's definately Fuuko's route, since I've hit all her SEENs and choices presented in the walkthrough. This is my first route of the game. And I'm going to do it for the Good End, followed by the save point and go through the True end, and then play Kotomi's route.
AKA, I'm only playing what the anime covers. :)
And which mood? The mood near the end of the game, my math crazy mood, my evil editing mood, or something else?
I'd be glad to work on any SEENs that I can, I just don't know which those are...
The same mood you get watchin' the anime, it's just a feeling that makes it easier to make more natural-sounding lines, I think anyway... :)
Just any you feel like doing really :P

I don't know.. I'm mixed opinion about the whole tense thing... i tend to want to translate it how it is... which is almost exclusively past-tense... but at times it does feel better in present... but there really are some that seem weird in present.... *sighs*
Hehe.. I think that is truly a problem of translation.... at least for people like me... I like to leave it very close to how it is constructed in Japanese... I guess because I like it that way... :) although sometimes it makes little sense to read it in english and not undersatnd why it was weirdly phrased... of course I obviously dislike comlpete and proprely constructed sentances half the time anyhow.
Hmm.. I dont know, I haven't played it at all as of yet, myself... guess I'm waiting for the official build? *shrugs* but I want to :)
All I can say about 6801 is at times it seems awfully repetative.... hehe.
Half of 6800/7 is about whether Nagisa's cute or not. Gawd.

I guess I don't feel so bad about 6801 anymore.... although sometimes I wish Nagisa would stop being so CUTE and become a bit more reasonable.... ehh.. nevermind... I'd have her as mine any day how she is... even though Kotomi would get first pick :)

Hm... official build... Yeah, I was kind of impatient and got the unofficial one. Since it doesn't really harm my game (Just rename SEEN.TXT to SEEN01.TXT and then move SEEN.TXT into the game folder), I figured I'd use it.
I wonder when the official build is going to come out. Since I don't know how long editing will take, I have no guesses. :p. I'm guessing one stage at a time.
By the way, V7 is 66, Zenemis is 33, and you are 100, AKA 200 lines per day average makes the translation phase completion ETA March 7th. This does account for your rough-finalized translation, which I have down as 8 days for 2 SEENs, which is the same as adding 800 lines.
I guess a lot of the SEENs are repetitive, because they come from many different choices, and they lead to similar scenarios. AKA, let's say that on the opening scene with Nagisa at the bottom of the hill, there was a choice to talk to her or leave her be. Then you go to school. There are two options of scenes there, which are that you take you lessons and then nap, or take your lessons and Nagisa bursts in the middle of one. The lessons part is the same, hence the repitition.
Or, 6801 is just repetitive. :)

Well I haven't looked at many other seens... I was just talking about ... it seems like every 70 lines or so .... while the details change...... they are in their narrow home... and T is talking about how his purpose to live Nagisa... and Nagisa's purpose to love is Shio-chan.... etc..... don't get me wrong.. there are some good parts to it :) I guess it is just a little bit more slice-of-life than I was expecting.

Hm... Maybe that SEEN is a dependant SEEN. Like, does it seem like every 70 lines he suddenly starts to say that again with no real connection to the lines before it, or does it seem like he is just repeating himself?

I think it's plot progression really... watching the dynamic of Nagisa and Tomoya change during the development (and hopefully birth?... maybe? ... perhaps) of Shio-chan.....
There doesnt seem to be any decision points in it.... but there sure are a couple of "what happened to the context" moments.... where time changes with no notice.... ;) at least the last few have been better "It's going to be Christmas in a few weeks" next line "... it's christmas day"
soemtimes it just seems like they are talking but the time has changed...
blah.. anyhow... I'm sure it plays better than it reads. :)

The game redirects you back to the main route after a mini-deviation, so its only translated once.
V7 just put down a nice chunk in 6800/0 :)

Hai, hai. :) I wonder... I really wish I knew Japanese so that I could help. I could only start a French translation of it. :'( But, I wonder if this is a sign that there are more translators coming into the project and the ads on the fansubs have paid off... Hm...
Also, happy birthday, Clannad Translation Project!
I found it through Hong-Fire's link to 'em.
My Japanese isn't fluent, it takes some effort to read it still, which I don't want to do while I'm enjoying the game. Instead of waiting, thought I'd help it along a little :P

Generally, translation projects do not put up release dates, because anything can happen. We can only speculate based off of what we know and how they progress with time.

Well, the only remaining seen's are 6800-6803. 6800 is almost done by v7, 6803 is quite short and 6801 is going at a nice pace thanks to Todkapuz. If you want to help with translation you could contact the people in charge of 6802, but still I think helping with translation proofing previous seen's is also something that will need to be done sooner or later :heh:

they are the fan translation that do to heart 2 PS2 version translation
http://toheart2.proboards59.com/index.cgi?board=ann
basically they decided to act like NNL, but unlike NNL that still giving out the patch to those who can give they some kind of proof that they purchased the original wind, this one fan translation group decided to un-release (well lets just say they claim that they have finished everything but didn't want to release it to public) and some even say that it was a hoax (the whole translation thing), in one board even one of NNL crew comment about this how it differ from NNL's action in the past
one of the main reason they "withdraw" their translation patch is because of those flamer in their forum that keep on demanding the game release.. and they retaliate by doing that un-release thing.. which well kinda spark some internet drama :heh:
@velo:
translation proofing eh, alright i'll see what i can do, *goes reading the translated seen file

Yeah, the thing about the To Heart 2 translation is that there's no evidence that it exists. Unlike the Wind beta, not one person has said that they've acquired it, including those involved with eroge translations (the team claims to have released the patch to respected members of those communities. They also said that people with the patch could distribute it to friends). Most likely, the announcement was just a parting shot at people who bothered the team.
Incidentally, the issues regarding Shuffle! are possibly linked to fan/translator relationships. We know that the project leader (who disappeared long ago) was disgusted with fans during the Wind/NNL debacle.

No, anyone can download the Wind patch.
In fact, NNL isn't concerned with piracy now that the game is out of print (although they still urge players to support the product by buying the cheap PS2 version).

As for myself, I had a feeling that something would happen at work to kill my good-pace.. oh well... just over 10% left on my first pass of 6801... sadly have to go in to work again tomorrow...
But yeah, over all translation checking would be helpful.. there is a number of lines that I read, and i know ithas to be saying something else... but cant find it.

If you're an editor (you have to be confirmed with v7 or something I think, not entirely sure), you can get an official build which has all of the styling, etc. I HIGHLY recommend getting it if you're an editor and to not use the unofficial builds, which crashes, has sloppy hacks, isn't as pretty, isn't up to date, and includes the voice patches. But don't bug v7 for it if you're just interested in playing it without editing or I'll kill you. :)

Probably part of another choice. The .ke files tell which line to go for a certain option and is not noted at all in the script.

6800 4224 Lines Left (haven't been keeping track of V's rate)
6801 109 lines left (one more night for me plus a little to clean it up and make it usable in a build)
6802 3143 lines left (another month at my rate)
6803 2 lines left
Pretty amazing, after just over a year only 7478 lines left. Hmm.. anyone bothered to determine how many lines total there were in the game? just out of curiosity sake?
I heard 65k or so, might be off though.
I could see 6800 being finished maybe mid Feb.

At the present rate of you going at about 66 lines a day, as well as V7 going 66 lines a day, that is about 132 lines a day. That's about 40 days to complete the SEEN.
Unless somebody increases their speed, decreases their speed, or if another translator hops on that SEEN.
If things continue like this, I'm looking forward to March, which would then be the end of the Translation phase. :)
Yeah, guess you're right :P

100,000+ lines actually... but I think it's around 105k, minus 5-10% repeatition of lines (that is, if you'll manage to remember those consistent lines).
I made this a year ago, CLANNAD Total Lines (not exact but 99% close) (http://www.freewebs.com/dgreater1/Clannad%20Total%20lines.htm)

About 100k...
Lord of the Rings, including the Trilogy, The Hobbit, and the Silmarillion, is apparently 3.6 million words.
Is Clannad actually unusually long compared to other Visual Novels?
It was the first, and probably last one I'll play (don't get me wrong, I loved it, just probably wouldn't do it again) :P

off topic to clear misunderstanding
mate i said that thing about NNL, just in contrast as what that leaf do, at first though nnl didn't exactly release it as easy at it is now (need all those proof and stuff)--> thus resulting in the early NNL drama, and later they did release it so anyone can download it(without all the original proof of purchasing) unlike that leaf translation team, and yes i got the patch when they finally decided to release it to public :D thats why i even defend NNL's name when someone said bad things about them.
okay back to translation, proofreading, can i straightly change what i think is not that good to read? or i should submit some letter regarding of my choice of words? ;)
You can probably change it if you really think yours is much better, but if you do, leave the original line as a comment underneath.

Well, at 100,000 lines, each line would need to be 36 words long to math the length of the Lord of the Rings. However, lines such as "Um..." or "I see." really drive down the word count.
If you want a comparison, I'd look more into plays. Shakespeare's "Hamlet" was 6,051 lines long. A midsummer night's dream was 3,121 lines long. So, averaging about 4,000 lines a play, Clannad is the equivalent of 25 shakespeare plays.
Each line in Shakespeare is about 5 words long. So, Clannad would be about 500,000 words long total. War and Peace is 560,000 words long.
Also: Are you sure it is 3.6 million? I've been looking online, and I'm getting like 300-500 thousand. You figure, The trilogy is 1,000 pages, and the Hobbit plus the Silmarillion is about 600, that is 1600 pages. It would need 2,000 words per page if it were to be 3.6 million words. I use 250 words as a base for my page counts. :p. Also, 3.6 million would mean that LOTR is 6 times longer than War and Peace.
I got mine from an answers.com page, which isn't exactly accurate :P
I coulda sworn it was longer than that, though it's been a long time since I've read it :P
Regarding the Shakespeare plays though, if I recall correctly, there's quite a few really long lines in there, like mini-poem length lines, contrasting against some of Clannad's one word lines.
Your estimate seems alot more sensible, but LotR still felt alot longer o.o

Your chart has a few errors in it, but still manages to come out to about the right number of lines.
Also, time for fun facts about CLANNAD.
CLANNAD has 102375 total lines.
This included 35471 narrated lines and 66904 spoken lines.
CLANNAD has 24195 repeated lines. (Note: this counts only the text of the line, who said it/ if it was said by the narrator does not matter)
The line repeated most often?
"………", 2471 times.
Yes, I have too much time on my hands. Have to do something to drive away the boredom of editing thousands of lines of text. Besides, knowing which lines are duplicates might help when checking for consistency later.

Might be something to think about if the group decides to do another one of these tanslations... build a bot or something to quickly identify the highly-used lines... and post those first... translate them ... and go back put them into the files... i dunno, maybe too much work for too little gain...
Consistency checking of Clannad is going to be a nightmare.... :) thats all i know.
Now my fun facts...
With 1916 lines translated, I've added 88,585 bytes of english... "// " accounts for 5748 bytes... so that leaves about 43 bytes to the average line of english, including spaces and etc. Wikipedia people claim that the average word length including a space is 6 bytes... so 7.17 words per line. Hm.. so 13,738 words thus far in Seen 6801.... feels about right.
So over all the lines in Clannad, if these hold true, then 734,029 words in the clannad game in english.

Ah ha, a friend was suggesting something similar for another project I'm working on. Actually, this wouldn't be *too* hard. It might take a few minutes to process all the data but I think it's an easy application.
Maybe I'll code it and run it on the Clannad scripts and post a small wiki page with the information so people can check it over.

Might be useful, if your going to write one now... for it to work with the current scripts as seen on the wiki... and pull all the various translations made... may help with the consistancy check.. see things that we will need to root out of the script :)

If you're going to be using it on another project, then you should probably write your own. The program I wrote makes a lot of assumptions about the formatting of the script files, so it's not portable.
As for uploading, where would I put it? On the translation wiki?
Todkapuz, are you doing 1 pass of TL Cleanup, or 2 passes? From your edit summary of the first 1/4, I couldn't tell whether you meant that you are cleaning up your first pass, or if you are doing a first pass of cleanup.
