Since Kyoto Animation is doing this series it has created abnormally high interest in this 4Koma strip. Sleeping Forest is now releasing this series as we speak and are up to chapter 3. In case nobody is sure of what 4Koma is, it is a gag strip style comic in the vein of the funny pages you see in your local newspaper where clever inside jokes lead to an inevitable punchline that will often have you nodding your head. This one has been labelled moe for some reason when really its just random. Actually the first chapter has Kona-Chan trying to figure out the best way to eat a Chocalate Roll. It's very bizarre.
Read this about 4koma manga and where it gets serialized: 4koma and the Media (http://www.manganews.net/forums/showthread.php?t=3689)
Also Eval Powar scanlated the first 2 chapters of the manga.
Links to some of the torrents are here: Manganews (http://www.manganews.net/seriesinfo.php?id=4885).
Well, if the torrents aren't working then go to their IRC channels :P

Took the words out of my mouth. :heh:
Like I said in the other thread, I didn't find the first two chapters all that funny. Though, I am still willing to give this manga a chance.

Do any of you know where I could write to the people who make the manga or the anime?
The first few chapters of the manga... you can tell the author is trying to get his footing and figure out what he wants to do with the series (very common problem). It starts hitting its stride later in the first volume.
As far as writing the author, visit the websites for contact information? You'll probably need to be able to write in Japanese. The few manga authors I've written to were terrible at English (though I apparently entertained them with my abysmal japanese).

Since a show has been made baed on the mange, odds are at least one of them will be able to understand English. For anime still only in Japanese, I put "This message is in English" on the envelope or first line of the email. Occasionally I even get a response from a personal translator. One time I actually found a voice actress who knows English. The manga will be tougher but I would be willing to bet the price of foriegn postage (or the price of an email) that they have a translator.
Just curious, why would you think any of the staff or the author is very good at english "because they have a show"?
You do know where the subtitles in the fansubs come from, right? (pardon me if that sounds insulting but I'm not following your logic)
Considering the slim budget anime productions run on, its rather unlikely that they'll have trained translators on staff since they don't do English translations. Manga-ka are even less likely to have access to a translator and must rely on their sometimes rusty english skills.
Most japanese have a considerable amount of english classwork under their belt --- but the quality of that education is very iffy and they don't get much chance to practice it, so expecting fluency in English may be a bit much (especially for adults long out of school).
Not saying not to try writing ... but they'd appreciate any attempt to write in their native language rather than expecting them to know english, especially since one is writing to them about an anime or manga that is in japanese. I usually provide both English and Japanese to double the chances I'll be understood and it gives them a chance to practice as well (if they're interested).

I also don't follow the logic. :heh: I get the feeling it's kind of like whatever language you learn in high school. I can tell you right now, I don't remember a speck of French even though I took two years of it. :heh:
Anyways, I'd think most Japanese people would get a kick out of an American trying to write to them in Japanese, and I'm sure they're really appreciate it. So why not try out some nihongo?

No need to go as far as fluent English. If someone has a basic understanding of the language I can make do. What I meant was having a show would make them more likely to have a translator, not increase their knowlege of the English language. A response for this meaning has also been given. Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon is an extreme case and not an anime but I have gotten responses to letters and email written in English so I know it can be done. Writing in Japanese is good advice. The little Japanese I know is limited mostly to the word and phrases I have picked up watching anime but I suppose I do know enough Japanese for a catch phrase.

Does anyone know the gender of the creator? Kagami strikes me as a female sort of name, but the wiki entry on Yoshimizu Kagami uses male pronouns.
The look of the characters also remind me of Hidamari Sketch, another manga drawn by a female artist.
A guy named Kagami is somewhat like being named Francis or Marion (both gender switchable names). However, I've not seen a pic or clip of the artist ... who draws themself as a round blobby kitty. I'd like to think it was female (just because I like seeing a distribution of people types in any profession).

It seems that he's male. They are referring to him with "he". If someone can read Japanese can he check the Japanese version of wiki?
If going on the art counts for anything I would say he's male. The are female artist doing shounen though(ecchi no less). :O

I'm not sure I trust that wikipedia entry for the answer. There is almost no biographic data (not even a birthday) and the link which is supposed to be for Yoshimizu-sensei's personal site is not. (The artwork is not up to Yoshimizu's standards and the only Lucky Star link is to a doujinshi.)
My guess is the use of the male pronoun in the wiki is because most English writers insist on using gender specific pronouns and use male pronouns by default. Without seeing a picture or the kanji Yoshimizu uses for Kagami, I'm withholding judgment on Yoshimizu's gender.
The use of hiragana in "Kagami" suggests to me that the mangaka is female... but I don't know for sure, either. It sure seems difficult getting piccies of lower-key mangaka (i.e. not CLAMP).
Agreed... wiki are not "gold" .... but yeah its rather interesting that it is so hard to get pictures of them.

One question about the manga. Some of my friends here are saying that there's a vol.5 already. I have'nt seen the cover on amazon or the official site. Are my friends just pulling a fast one on me or THERE is a vol.5 already out there or in the works? Just curious...
More manga means more LOLI fun!!! :heh:
There is almost certainly one in the works.... but the volumes are released about every 6-12 months. The last one was published in April so I'd expect to wait til next winter??? Amazon.co.jp isn't showing anything yet.
I'll assume you mean fashion or art style loli since they're 17 :)

No, I meant officially, translated and sold in North America. ^^;
Alright then.
It's not licensed in NA... though I wouldn't be really all that surprised if it did get licensed eventually.
Anyone know what the title of Lucky Star is in Chinese? I'd like to check for the manga.

Haven't heard or seen anything about....well maybe just pics at animepaper -_-"
eh, yeah. The manga is what the anime is based on ... a collected series of 4-koma that were originally published in magazines.
Its very cute.... you should read it (available at amazon.co.jp or Kinokuniya bookstores amongst other places).

Still no word on the gender of the mangaka?

Someone named "Shyuu" gets the mangaka credit for the new manga while Yoshimizu only gets an "original source" credit. I don't care for Shyuu's style of drawing the characters. I've seen some very good non-SD Lucky Star art, but this new manga looks too much like realistic bodies with cartoon heads for my taste. IMO, the twins just look freaky in this style. :(
Not sure about the cartoon heads (you may be getting that because none of the characters - except for Kona's dad - are drawn with noses), but I also don't care for the style... not sure what it is about it, but it's unappealing to me.
The "realistic" look I still like best is this one:

...Which was posted somewhere around here a while ago, but I can't find it. *swt* So I just nabbed it off a random site. *swtswt*
Okay, I admit, I haven't really been looking for Chinese scanlations. So just today, I hopped on Google for 15 minutes.
I think I got them all. But they're all registration only + view-on-site, so don't hold your breath as I try to get them all down.

Yeah your right...if Kona-chan was drawn that way in the anime she's very attractive...or maybe because her mom looks like her the author decided to hybird the face of the parents making her smile like a cat similar to dad and the elegant moppy hair from mom.
BTW belated Happy Father's day :heh:

That's the origional 4koma, but later the author changed to the current style.
That's the origional 4koma, but later the author changed to the current style.
There's even one 4koma later in the series that refers to this art-style change, which can be taken as a self-mockery of the manga itself.
Konata talks about how some manga authors adapts to drawing characters over the course of time. They "evolve" their drawings to which they become the most comfortable with. On the other hand, this tends to showcase the dramatic difference in artstyle towards their readers, and is especially noticeable if one should happen to compare with his/her older drawings. Then Konata breaks into an uneasy laugh, "uh...I don't think we should continue this discussion anymore."
Hnn, thanks for shedding light on that... I haven't read any of the 4-koma except for what's in volume 4 and in the Comptiq mag I have. I still like that "realistic" look best though.
Just want to let everyone know that the Lucky*Star manga has been picked up again. XLG, the hardworking people who have been bringing us Highschool of the Dead and REC, have been releasing chapters at one per day.

O_o, theres a change in art style? From where?
Currently reading volume 1 in chinese... 2 and 3 are for sale, just haven't bought them haha...
I liked the way they used really multiple tones and such for the characters, quite detailed, they look really great in black and white.
In any case, it seems like the anime takes everything from the manga and add new details, as well as altering some of the manga's detail to parady other animes... Hmm. Though I was surprised to see that the drill scene originated from the manga.

is the "story" the same as in the anime?
Question! *raises hand*

Yes, KyoAni took the manga strips nearly verbatim, and added in the cultural references.
There are a few anime-only sequences that are Lucky*Star specific but they're just nicely done expansions of things inferred in the 4-koma (beach trip, some conversations, etc).
I'm getting kind of curious as to how they'll end the anime --- at their current speed, we'll see the first set of girls graduate at series end.

I keep watching for a fifth volume from author Kagami but so far none on the horizon. The release dates aren't terribly consistent.
Looks like Volume 5 is out:

Date of release: 10 Sep 2007
w00t.... w00t, I say.
This and Yotsubato are my favorite manga to read over the last year or two.
O_O.... So soon! I'm glad someone was paying attention ('cause I sure wasn't!)
Too close to my departure date that I have to wait to get it though. It's only a matter of time before I pick L*S back up and psychoanalyze every scene, since I'll finally have every volume, yo. (Yess, GETTO!)
I really dig the volume cover illustration, too.
Maybe this is an stupid questio, but right now, I am too lazy to read the previoud posts X3. The manga isn't licensed, is it? And, of course, it can't be bought in another language other then japanese right? (If both answers are NO!, then a 3rd one: The previous fansub link which was posted here is really translating the manga? I mean, I could find the 12 chapters which are translated in a few more pages, but there are no more...)
Thanks for the help!!
The manga is not licensed in America.
It is available in Japanese (and Chinese translations I think)
There are scanlators working on the manga but all the ones I know about are only a handful of chapters into the first volume.

Very, very beautiful. This manga had better run long...because I won't be able to stand letting it go.
How long do you guys think this would stay? I'm pretty sure Yoshimizu Kagami would keep it going for as long as Comptiq is there, because it's effectively advertisement (and I'm sure a steady income). No offense to him/her, but I don't think Kagami-sensei would move on to bigger projects for one reason or another, because his/her art style just doesn't seem suited for bigger calibers. He/she *does* remain one of the champions of all 4-komas.

Bought my first batch of L*S manga (volumes 1 & 2) from Kinokuniya to commemorate the ending of the anime. Should arrive by this weekend. Can't wait!
PS: Had to buy it online, though. Why don't they have Kinokuniya in Atlanta!? There's like 10 in Cali! (exaggerating, but there's a LOT there:heh:)
Only foreign translation for LS right now is Traditional Chinese edition sold in Taiwan and maybe HK. Taiwan has the largest catalog of Japanese manga out side of Japan.
Opps, I just remember a Thai poster mentioned that Thai edition was also just published.

Er.... there's also a Korean translation of L*S that's available. However, the resultant work was so rushed that it turned out to be an abomination:heh:(there are images floating around pointing out typos and *gasp* white-out marks). The fact that the translator added *localization* didn't help either (scrapping Miyuki's keigo is a major no-no for me).
Which is kinda odd considering Daiwon isn't exactly new to the manga/light-novel scene.
Here's a photo of a paperstand given as an apology with L*S volume 2:

It does look tempting, but no. I like my Miyuki with her keigo.
Will they be re-doing L*S or are they just going to leave it at an apology?
I'd be tempted to steal those paperstands. :heh:

If done some reading over the 'Net, and it seems that they fired the old translator:heh:, but have no plans of re-releasing volume 1 (they have a new translator for volume 2, the most recent one).
The overall opinion is that the translation is a lot better, much fewer mistakes*, better print quality (no more white-outs!) but Miyuki's keigo is still gone.
* Apparently the translator doesn't know otaku culture that much. カャルゲ(Kyaruke, dating-sim character. Not sure how it is in Japanese) was transliterated as "갸루계(note: punk girl(?))." In other words, the translator had no idea what カャルゲ was and tried her best, and failed:heh:. Poor Kanata, she was demoted from dating-sim character to punk girl!
I wonder if theres any raws of the manga running around... I have vol 1-3 in Chinese but I don't feel like taking them to my scanner to scan them in fear of damaging the book by applying too much pressure to the centre... There are so many nice pictures of the gang... ooooo.

Volume 5? Coming out tomorrow? Sweet. So how long before a chinese translation comes out?
No idea what the pattern for translated releases are... but I can't imagine it lagging more than a few months (unlike we poor bastards in the US where english readers are still waiting for *someone* to license it).
If that info was posted on amazon.co.jp... then that's nihon-time, yo. :) I guess I'll run over to Animate and pick it up tomolo.

I'm collecting the series (5 volumes so far) but other than my paper'n'pencil henscratches to work out some of the text - that's the extent of what I've done with it. Never tried to do a scanlation before because I hate damaging the books.
There's actually a thread about the manga in the Lucky Star subforum so your thread might end up merged with that one - just so you know :)

So, anybody read "Lucky☆Star : Pocket Travelers"?
I recently came across what seems to be the spin off of lucky star that comp ace announced, but I'm not really sure. Why am I not sure?
Disbelief, mostly. "Pocket Travelers". That should be read literally.

It's like, they've taken all those cute tiny chibi artworks and added a storyline. Granted, as far as manga/anime concepts go, this is not that weird but for a spinoff of a realistic(ish, all things considered) manga like lucky star it may slightly be out of place.
That said, it does feel like lucky star to me as they are pretty much in character. Plus they are cute.
Ridiculously so.
Sure, sometimes it feels like they are trying too much to be cute, but when they are, they are Ridiculously Cute.
And the story (from what I can tell) is decent.
Overall, I am amused. Nothing amazing, but I really do want more (Also want more of: translations). More lucky star shouldn't be bad thing.

Since I never got an answer in the Q&A thread, I gotta question: Did Konata like all the Kyoto-animation stuff (Haruhi in particular) before they got their mitts on it? :D

Since I never got an answer in the Q&A thread, I gotta question: Did Konata like all the Kyoto-animation stuff (Haruhi in particular) before they got their mitts on it? :D
Basically, almost NONE of the anime references to other series are in the manga. About the main one I can think of is when Konata is pretending to be (o cripes, can't think of her name) while she's adjusting Tsukasa's bow, and shirt, and flaps, and weirding Kagami out. There's also some generic references when Kona's in "getto!" mode to Gundam-ish things and the like.
None of the Haruhi stuff is there, none of the anime-tenchou, no Shuffle! product placement, none... well you get the idea. The generic MMO *is* there (which is a play on Ragnarok Online or something similar).
All the actual "humor" is there (food-talk, glasses, torturing Kagami, and such). The beach trip is mostly offscreen in the manga so that was nice expanding that. Actually *being* at Comiket is mostly anime-only (but also nice). Actually visiting Kona's cafe is anime-only....
Actually, this isn't a rant against the placement.. just a lament that people *expecting* all the product placement and easter eggs may be disappointed in the manga. People expecting quirky humor and slice-of-modern-girl (and otaku) life will be pleased. The anime does well when it actually portrays events only mentioned or happening off-stage in the manga.
Hi!
Sorry if this is a misplaced question, but I'd like to know just where does pure text Lucky Star fan fiction fit in, like in FanFictionNet and other sites? I've never seen a "Light Novel" as defined in the anime world but by the description does text fan fiction count as these kinds of stories? I dunno. Just asking! :) Has anyone ever compiled a list of them from around the web? There might be some golden nuggets scattered out there! ;)

LOL!!
When I first heard of "Pocket Travelers" the first thing that popped into my mind was like, What? A pocket edition of Lucky Star -- like a tiny manga book???
It's different alright, whimsical but faithfully enough Lucky Star to enjoy like the manga! I don't know whether the artist and writer are actual KA contributors, but kudos to them for a good read and I hope Chapter 2 isn't far behind!!
Thanks also to the great guys who scanned and translated this story for zero peso! Thanks a trillion you all!
But -- you know what would be so cool? If these manga and doujinshi stories were dubbed with separate audio files -- maybe even with special sound / music effects to spice up your read! So cool!!!

Pocket Travelers Chap 1 Critiques:
The Bear Fact:
I don't know whether it was missed in translation or a script oversight, but the punchline for the gag about Tsukasa's "stuffed bear" was lost since it wasn't mentioned that it was really a cell phone charm from the get-go. I found that out somewhere else!
Does rain have any mystical significance in Japanese culture like for transformations?
From what anime/mange do Konata's figures come from?
Wonder if Konata also has Barbie whose wardrobe Tsukasa might like too? :)
Lol! I was kinda hoping Konata, as poor stunned Yu-chan was crashing down, would've yelled "TIMBER!!!!!" :)
Dee
why is nobody licensing this :( , maybe it will happen after the DVD's are released
That's quite possible... I'm sure the manga publishers are going to keep an eye on R1 sales or at least the buzz if they're not already making proposals.
iPhone grabbed the scanlation late last night at beddie time. Thanks S3 for the good read!!
Highlights:
Seeing Konata standing in Yu-chan's cupped hands soo cute! I wanna Kona doll!!
The arcade game scene with Konata and Kagami acting out as Yu-chan's hands on the sly is just precious, and I dunno, but why does it ring of an (old?) anime I can't remember?
Love the stunned scene when Patty and Hiyori catch a terminally angst Tsukasa laid out in the UFO Catcher dump chute! (and our coward queen trying to get scarce!)
Too bad Konata has to worry about getting crushed by her dad (and maybe more in the very worst way!) instead of getting help from him!
Like the bathtub scene passing for a sauna chat, but don't know whether I'd use that cup after Konata's done with it!
Now my peeves! (hey, I can nit-pick if I'm a fan, right??)...
Maybe it's me, but the artwork looks a little less refined this go around. Okay, but not up to last time. A change of artist?
I love shopping like the next girl but even I had a little trouble with the girls being more concerned with cruising the mall than patching up their condition! Also, unless it's my Swiss-cheese American mindset, there are too many gaps in artwork missing some telling action, like how'd the girls got caught and dumped in the UFO Catcher machine and how the heck Tsukasa ended up in the dump chute before Kona did. Would've been nice if Konata's original dialog said "Oh-Oh! My leg's caught in the grabber with the bear" to explain her getting hauled up and away. I'm sure a panel could've been divvied up enough to show slices of such action.
All this said and done, the really cute "Behind The Scenes At S3" panel made me wonder; asides scanlation and typesetting, whether S3's (or others) have ever given a thought of creating their own parallel rewrite or redraw of some scenes taking a more logical or sensible dialog than the original translation. For example, in the last panel of CH2_04, instead of Miyuki saying "This is very troubling," she can say; "Well, I do seem to recall Kona-chan mentioning a curse with the figures..." And in CH2_05 she continues; "Maybe there's something to that myth..." and in CH2_06 Konata comments in the last panels, "You're right. See, I was searching for the bouquet that would've completed these figures and satisfied their mystic spirits instead of incurring their wrath, but I couldn't find it." Kagami; "Gee, maybe you just never bought it, ever thought of that, Sherlock?" Miyuki: "Then the solution's obvious!" Konata: "Yea, we go shopping for another!!!' and yada yada...
Sorry for running wild off like that, but just had to add my two yen!
Thanks for all your hard work!
Dee
Hi All!
I'm on my way killing travel time 'tween school and work by drafting up the lines on my iPhone for a minimum fifty panel online manga for LS sites like this one to freely feature. The whole Godzilla's being done by and for -- like Kona-chan said -- "for Love!" with zero penny or yen in the way. I really want a hi-quality read here, with an ambience more like a sassier "Pocket Travelers" than the more "PC" Lucky Star manga and Satsujin Jiken, and to give you an idea where it's at, the working title is "Kona In Tronland"...
Yea, break out all 'em rusty VCRs if you can find the video!! ;)
Anyway, after some really talented gallery art guys here and on other LS forums answered my request, I've one committed gent on DWind who did me one awesome slam bang sketch of Kona-Tron and believes he could shoehorn time to put script to panels tentative to August (but his feet aren't in concrete and his feelings won't be hurt if someone could leapfrog him on this). Sticker: He'd rather finish the whole thing THEN upload it to sites in one take, though I'd prefer releasing strips in installments over months, but we'll see.
So much for the art side, but I'm also seeking not just a dialogue critiquer but someone Jap/anime knowledgeable to help plant obscure cultural/amine references into the lines and storyboard (bound to be fun messing with reader heads like that!) :) . So anyone who thinks they're able to swing it just post me your interest here or zap me at dee_eon@mac.com!
Thanks!

Authoress of "Kanata: Totally Dead??" and "Kanata's Dream"
P.S.: I was going to also post this on the Generic Discussion thread to max exposure to you guys, but don't wanna get slammed for double posting! :(
Hi All!
Well, I finally found out why Yu-chan's crazy video game scene felt so mysteriously familiar like I'd glimpsed something just vaguely like it somewhere some time ago, and it's name is Voltron! :)
It's interesting that the quad didn't shrink down to normal proportions (i.e. Miyuki) but instead resemble chibi dolls, so this curse/hex has a real impish bent!
Just a thought, but does anyone sense by the manga writing style and tone that it's really another writer doing Pocket Travelers and not Yoshimizu Kagami?
Oh, an out of the park question; can Photoshop be used to colorize the PT scanlations? (hint, hint!) Thanks!
First full draft of "Kona In Tronland" doujinshi's completed (look to September+ release unless artist changes), but just want a sampling of hands of whether most fans would like a story more canon than racy.
Dee
Hi All!
I'm told that the Pocket Travelers 3 raw has been bought and being scanned! Yippee!
While we wait, I'd like to play a kind of "creative editing" game, where you mentally replace the panel's dialogue your own take of the scene or for a better translation or just to make better logical sense - which is my beef because I have issues with the hyper-chavalier way the girls are reacting to their situation. It's all for fun and not meant to upstage the original writer or translators!
Dee
Okay, here's my "touch-up" takes for Chapter 2 to make the rest of the tale feel more more sensible!
Replacement dialogue for LSPT_CH2_07
Panel 3:
Kagami: Forget you bought half the mall here; Has that shrunken skull overlooked the serious fix we're in??"
Konata: "Hey, like my chest, skull size doesn't matter! See, I was searching for the enchanted bouquet that would've completed these figures and checkmated the Grand Sorcer's powers, but I couldn't find it."
Panel 4:
Kagami; "Gee, maybe you just never bought it, ever thought of that, Sherlock? What are you blathering about??"
Konata: "See, in their manga, the Grand Sorcer's jealous of these two coming together and puts a shrinking hex on anyone who helps them! You read it once, remember?"
Kagami: "Barely. If I remember right, the only way to undo it is if you can win as many different games as possible in one day, right? Definitely your outku universe! Sheesh!"
Konata: "That's why we have to hit a couple of games like now -- and try to buy a bouquet if they're not sold out already!"
Spoiler Alert!!
Interesting sneak peeks of future PT issues:

While I know that scanlations are going at an agonizing pace, I noticed a while ago that the Lucky Star girls graduated high school in the Japanese manga. I heard that the story has continued even after that.
I really want to know what's going on. I can't read Japanese of course, so I'm completely in the dark. Does anyone out there know any details about the current Lucky Star manga? I want to know where the strips would go once high school is over.

Here's something interesting:
I noticed that Yoshimizu's style has changed a little bit; it's a subtle difference, barely noticeable, but I feel it's a big improvement art-wise improvement. Either that, or I'm just going crazy. Here, judge for youself.

Of course his style changed. I would be shocked to find any long-running manga that didn't have a noticable style change from beginning to end. Usually I like the way it evolves.
Yoshimizu-sensei's style seems to have gained more and more resemblance to the anime's style, hasn't it? I wonder if he conformed for them, or if the anime started after his style began to shift to this rounder, more chibi-ish look.
It's a nice change from the style he left us with volume 5 (not that it was bad, I just love this one so much more).
~:Evayo:~
Actually... his style seems to morph a bit depending on what the original 4-koma was published in as well. If you browse through volume 6, for example, you'll see style changes from chapter to chapter depending on what magazine the original may have been published in.
Oh, I know that. I'm mainly referring to his non-magazine artwork, if you know what I mean. Mainly the stuff that's not 4-koma, like cover-artwork and stand-alone images. The best example I could find is the one I posted in a spoiler tag above.
Sorry, I know the difference is there, it's just hard to explain what it is...
~:Evayo:~
Aye, I see.... yeah there's been evolution of a sort...nowhere near as dramatic as many American cartoon artists I've followed though. Mostly just craft improvement.
I really would like to see him try a chapter with "realistic" style... I think that'd be a lot of fun -- like some sort of phony eroge game skit in Konata's mind.
As long as he maintains the illusion with full-color CG'd pages. :D
~:Evayo:~
I need to go and order them again. I did not know of the author's style change. :)
Overall artistic progressions in manga are pleasant as mangaka refine their formulas and get a better idea on what their characters stand for. Negima is a good example of that...nearly all 31 girls are slowly given their own expressions.
I remember back then Yoshimizu drew the faces very flat and all the faces follow a set formula. I only wish he/she could draw the old early-vol.1 style again. Konata before her sleepy otaku eyes was actually pretty cool-looking.
I'm not sure what he/she could possibly do with drawing them realistically though. It'd require a storyline or it'd go stale really fast.
Yes, early Konata was very cool, but none can match the utter moe-ness of the sleepy eyes. :heh:
(Oh, and Kagami Yoshimizu's a guy, by the way)
~:Evayo:~
Aye... he just has a name like Francis or Murphy that slips genders from time to time.

^ Yuki is another one. I didn't know that Kagami was one, also...
I think most names without the "-ko" suffix is liable to be unisex, since Asian names tend to draw connections to things in nature (lots of animals, trees, and seasons), key events (lots of babies in China called "Olympic" right about now), and adjectives. We probably won't see a man with a girly adjective like "Ai = love" in his name, but "winter" and "field" can happen to everyone.
If you only know my real name and nothing else it's fully possible (though not too likely) to think I'm a girl.
Western names seem to tend towards reflecting historical and biblical examples so they usually have a sex pegged onto each depending on who that was.
So there will be a volume 7 for this ? :D

It's a good read, anyways! :D
Got my copy, part way through it. The translation isn't terrible... just kind of odd (I have spotted one or two minor "wtf?" translations but the gist wasn't ruined).
I think the translator was trying to be as transparent as possible so some terms are left in Japanese, the sentence structure is sometimes awkward/formal, etc. There's also a large glossary at the end.
Quality of the print is about as good as it gets in "R1-land".
If you want to know what Lucky*Star is REALLY like, then you should buy the manga --- it is going to surprise the "product placement", "insider reference", "industry gags" fanatics. :)

The translation was decent. But they replaced 'sensei' with 'ma'am'. I always got the feel that, even though it was a title for her, sensei was used sort of as a name. So I think Kuroi being called ma'am threw it off.
There are a few little 'off' things, as vexx mentioned. Oh well, english releases are a good sign, hopefully.

Missed this press release: Lucky Star Manga Vol. 1 to Get Second Printing
According to this press release (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/press-release/2009-07-13/lucky-star-manga-vol-1-to-get-second-printing) I found on ANN, the first volume is going back for a second printing after only two weeks of release.
Amazing! :D

See, if I read that, I'd actually be thrown off by the fact that "ma'am" is for people who are presumably married.

A second printing is great news!!! Hopefully it did a lot better than they were expecting :)
Second volume is available btw.... ordered mine today.
Second volume? When I got the first volume, it had all 25 chapters
Second volume? When I got the first volume, it had all 25 chapters
eh? There are six volumes of Lucky*Star released so far in Japan.... not sure what you're meaning there. The first volume contains the first 25 "episodes" (as the author calls them) but volume six ends with "episode 184" and then a couple of "specials".
Hard to remember but at the time of airing for Lucky*Star's anime adaptation, it seems like there were 4 volumes released at that point.
There are six volumes of Lucky*Star 4-koma manga at present. Also a number of "other artists" short story collections and various doujinshi.
Volume 6: http://www.amazon.co.jp/%E3%82%89%E3...1445658&sr=8-7 (http://www.amazon.co.jp/%E3%82%89%E3%81%8D-%E2%98%86-%E3%81%99%E3%81%9F-6-%E8%A7%92%E5%B7%9D%E3%82%B3%E3%83%9F%E3%83%83%E3%8 2%AF%E3%82%B9/dp/4048542125/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1251445658&sr=8-7)
All L*S products at amazon.co.jp: http://www.amazon.co.jp/s/ref=nb_ss?...2%BD&x=20&y=20 (http://www.amazon.co.jp/s/ref=nb_ss?__mk_ja_JP=%83J%83%5E%83J%83i&url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=%82%E7%82%AB%81%99%82%B7%82%BD&x=20&y=20)
The volumes were averaging six months between released but volume 6 arrived a year after volume 5.... don't know if we'll see a volume 7 or not but September would be the month to start scanning for it. Of course, one can wait for the english versions which started a few months ago.

Ditto. Delayed till October-November.
These days I don't even take confidence in the notion that it won't be canceled.
I bought all latest volumes (up to 4....)
And the bad part is....
Volume 2 is delayed to next year
We're writing about the order you placed on September 12 2009 (Order# XXX-XXXXXXX-XXXX230). Unfortunately, we are unable to ship the item(s) as soon as we expected and need to provide you with a new estimate of when the item(s) may be delivered:
Kagami Yoshimizu "Lucky Star Manga Volume 2"
Estimated arrival date: April 05 2010 - April 09 2010
Volume 3 is by December but no delay news yet
and Volume 4 is by March 2010
DAMMIT
Just checked Rightstuf, and it says volume 2's been delayed to November 30. Really sucks, since Bandai's website just updated recently saying it'd be out on time, with volume 3 out in November. Wonder how late that'll get pushed back; Rightstuf says it's due out in December. :frustrated:

What I want to know is how freaking hard it is for Bandai to send some mook to a computer and update their own god damned website. I've gotten one of those bullshit emails from Amazon three times now. Amazon says not till November OR December, most other websites say January, and BANDAI THEMSELVES still say October, with vol 3 in November and Vol 4 going "back on schedule" after that.
Delay after delay is one thing. Not keeping us updated is another. The rumors about when this volume will come out are more accurate than the official word. If we're expected to be mature, understanding fans who will forgive Bandai's situation, then they should treat us as such. They have our preorders, they've kept us waiting since August, and all I've heard from them was one update (that I got THIS month) containing a flat-out lie.
This is supposed to be a professional organization we're dealing with. I can forgive all the troubles they've been having, but I can see little excuse for them to leave us hanging for months at a time on a single word as to when we'll get our product from them, or their ACTUAL release schedule. They must have known for a long time that the schedule projected on the website is bullshit. I'm getting tired of being treated so irresponsibly.
It seems there's also a 7th volume... (I saw the Japanese version...)
A 7th? Hmmmm, after the long silence I figured the series was done at 6. EDIT: found it (searching at amazon.co.jp is always a bit tweaky).

Amazon executes a "just-in-time" inventory which is why they'll often offer something only to find they can't get it. They keep trying but it strings the customer out for months and eventually when they give up, the customer can't find it anywhere else. It is a disaster to use them for collectibles and I rarely use them even for manga anymore.
All the manga publishers seems to have absolutely terrible skills at fan relations. ADV and now Tokyopop are often the worst offenders. They don't seem to realize that even a "please stand by, up to ass in alligators" would be appreciated.
Right now, I'm very unlikely to start *any* series that isn't complete from any publisher but Yen, Viz, or Del Rey because of the reliability issues with ADV, TP, Bandai, etc. And that's because of issues with series like Yotsuba, ARIA, Karin (Chibi Vampire), etc.
Well... now I have Yotsuba volume 9 and Lucky*Star volume 7 to seek and acquire.... time to hit Uwajimaya before I resort to ordering online.

Seems Bandai was telling the truth, actually... the brick and mortar shop near me got it before any of the online retailers did. Pretty messed up. Glad to have it, though.
Does anyone think this whole gross situation is ever going to improve? Is this really gonna be the death of the US's anime/manga boom or what?
Yen is currently doing a pretty good job (as is Viz and Del Rey). Tokyopop feels to me like its sliding down the ADV path of doom and they're moving heavily into OEL comics (its much cheaper apparently). I was elated when they lost Yotsuba to Yen... and I'd like to see ARIA moved from them.
I suspect Bandai will bumble along since they're directly connected to their Japanese corporate parents.
Personally, I'd be fine with less of a boom and for the remaining reliable publishers to focus a bit more tightly.

I agree with you, with the exception of these delays and the ever-looming fear of cancellation. It feels like something I'll be having to put up with for a few series I like, and I'm preeeetty sure that they wouldn't be a problem if there was still a "boom" going on.
Thank goodness for Yen in regard to Yotsuba&! I'm also excited about the Spice and Wolf light novels, but I fear for their longevity and a bi-annual release schedule is not a fun prospect.
All this would be but a distant disturbance (aka someone else's problem) if I had a fluent understanding of Japanese. I should work harder on that.
I found out the release from Bandai:
November 16 Volume 2, December XX Volume 3, February 2010 Volume 4
Seems like it's faster now...
Is this really gonna be the death of the US's anime/manga boom or what?
lol plenty of fans to have a "death"... plus the fandom of anime/manga is very strong (even if anime and manga disappeared all of a sudden, you still have the fanbase).
