View Full Version : Higurashi licensed by Geneon
When I first heard the dub, I thought it was okay, but then it grew on me and now I love it just as much as the Japanese version, and I honestly don't get what people find so wrong with the voices aside from a few weird-sounding lines here and there
Also, the dub should stay consistant through all 6 DVDs, since, as has already been mentioned, FUNimation's only producing the DVDs for Geneon and is doing nothing to the dub at all
I'm pretty sure FUNi doesn't have Kai, but I think they've said they'd consider picking it up if the first season sells well

I've definitely heard worse when it comes to dubbing, I actually learned to lower my expectations a lot when it comes to this... so I guess when I first heard the English dub of Higurashi I wasn't really turned off as much as other people were. I still prefer and watch the Japanese version, but the English dub still isn't anywhere near the worst that I've heard. @_@;

Have you got any proof that Funimation has licensed the second season? Because if not then I think the entirety of your rumor is rendered questionable.
Yeah sorry, I was typing it, and then as I was typing it.... I was like 1- Where did I hear this from? and 2- What the heck am I typing?
Yes. Don't believe me, I just spew lies D: I apologize for the lack of judgement/brain matter.

Atleast they didnt have Dub Voices like Bleach or Naruto

Yeah, I like a lot of the fandubs. If only they weren't just clips, eh?
Even though it sounds a tad too old, Satoko's dub voice is really growing on me. Same for Frederica. Rika's, Rena's, and Oishi's probably never will, but life goes on. Satoshi's wasn't the worst, but I don't like it very much. It sounds similar to Keiichi's, but a bit deeper, I think.

2008-10-20, 06:20
Eh, I'm not a huge fan of most fandubs. The mic quality for a lot of them is ussually pretty poor.
Anyways, I like the Geneon dub for the most part. The only voice I'm not a huge fan of is Rena's and that's mostly because it sounds like she's struggling with the voice a bit. Of course, that's only by judging from the first disk.
Normally dubs tend to improve as the actors settle into their parts, so I'll have to see how she does on the next disks.
LOVE Keiichi's voice by the by. It's wonderful how his voice kind of cracks when he's in "freaking the hell out" mode *laughs*.
The only voice I really wish they'd change would be Rika's. Oishii's is kinda nail-on-chalkboard too, but we don't have to listen to him as much.

Uh... this isn't bumping, is it?
Anyway, I got the fifth DVD today (no digital camera or scanner, so no pictures. Sorry.). It included a mini poster of Shion facing away from Satoshi and kind of had a magenta background.
+Good acting from most of the characters, though sometimes the wrong emotions were used for the wrong scenes.
-Shmion's laugh hasn't improved.
+Satoko's final speech was done very well.
-Unless I misheard, Rina didn't call Rena "Reina."
-Satoko's VA still can't do her trademark laugh properly.
+Rika vs Shion was done pretty well, though Rika didn't call Shion a sadist.
-Everyone but Rena seems to pronounce Satoko "Sadoko."

BestBuy has an anime section. You can get pretty good deals online like Mistypearl said. FYE I have found to be really expensive, but Best Buy is not much better. Sometimes they have good deals on old classics nobody wants

All we know about Volume 6 is that it will be released Dec 23. You probably shouldn't expect a box set until February (wouldn't that be interesting if the release date of the box set is the release date of Rei).

Being in Japan, I'd like to ask a question: Do English dub voice actors/actresses have their radio shows about the anime or have fan events promoting the anime?
This is one of the interesting parts of the Japanese anime industry - there are lots of tie-ins to promote the sales of the DVDs. Do Anime released in the US have such promos? Or is just based on fansub popularity?

Well as far as I know living in New Jersey anime is only really bought by people who loved the fansubs of the anime online or if they happen to like the group who picked up the anime and started dubbing it into english. (Like Funimation for example)
In America there are random cons to go to and whatnot and if the con is highly popular, they will have promotions at the cons like flyers or english voice actor autographs or panel.
It would be neat if they had events on certant days that had like for instance Higurashi events one day or a radio show you can tune into that isn't a podcast you have to find on itunes, but anime isn't as popular as it is in Japan, so this will never happen.
The best we have are Cons that we go to that happen every so often.
My question:
Is Funimation planning (Or currently) redubbing Higurashi?
I heard rumors on youtube and such but didn't know if it was true. Gosh, I hope it is!

I was on the funimation website today, and their 'quickie' podcast was up like 2 days ago talking about licensing 10 new titles in the 10 days before January 1st. Now I don't want to raise people's hopes, but I know alot of people are thinking Kai will be one of them, but I'm just saying, it could be possible. Also the site is the funimation site slash newshowagogo.

I don't think that Higurashi got any real advertising in the US. Of course it's aimed at a niche target audience which is probably already aware of the show, so advertising it to that group would have probably been unnecessary.

The dubbing for Higurashi S1 was already finished. Dubbing is the most expensive part of releasing a series in the West. Why would they unnecessarily repeat if for a title that only has a limited target audience?

Only real advertising i've seen for Higurashi is the animated links they have on the ANN website. Atleast its better than nothing, ANN gets pretty high traffic so hopefully some casual fans have taken notice to it.
Has there ever been any indication just how well the series has sold on DVD over here? I thought I recall that prior to Geneon pulling their distribution that the series was selling fairly well, but I havent heard if its been doing well again since they have started re-releasing it.

Yes that is why I was wondering if this rumor I heard was actually true or not.
I really can't say I dislike the english dubbing of the Higurashi series since I didn't really watch much but all of episode 4.
I didn't necessarily like it because of the butchered laughter they did...
But I wonder if they will have an all new cast for season 2, Solutions. (kai)
I recently finished watching the last DVD of the series
And I must say I personally really like the dubbed version just as much as the Japanese version, Meakashi-hen and Tsumihoroboshi-hen were handled especially well in my opinion. Though they were shaky earlier in the series, I felt the actors really got into their characters eventually and were great in these last two arcs.
I really hope Kai will get licensed soon and that all the actors reprise their roles. ^^

They sell the limited (Now I think retired) bundle with Art and dvd 1 w/ box for the price of a regualr DVD that you would buy of the Higurashi series, and they as well sell all the other DVDS 1-6 (W/ or w/out art box that was DVD 1) for a amazing pricing of 22 bucks!

I plan to eventually buy all the DVDs including the DVD 1 Art Box Bundle, but was wondering if the english voice cast for Higurashi would progressively get better and when.
In this case up till (Sadly) the last volume it got better, volume 6. But the main question(s) is when does it start to pick up and does the english voice cast even compare to the Japanese voice cast.
Also the minus was some of the dubbed lines didn't meet good standards with the original's dubbed lines... is it a big deal or, for instance a very troublesome problem?
Heh.
Ace of Dragons
2008-12-23, 23:04
True enough, true enough. The changed lines aren't as big a deal as I made it out to be. I guess it's just personal preference and just how much people like the original dialogue (like the fun-fun underground torture chamber?) and hope for it to be the same or how unexpected they are.
"Keiichi, you suck!" Rather than "You're cruel, Keiichi-kun!" when Rena catches him with the alarm clock, trying to disarm her bomb, for instance.
I'm not sure when they start getting better, but it's probably some time after Onikakushi-hen.
Oyajitchi, you don't have to watch it in english you know. I haven't even touched the english dub myself.

woww....what mini poster did you got with Vol. 6? Or there isnt poster in it?
Oyajitchi, I'll say that in my opinion, Watangashi-hen and Tatarigoroshi-hen are done a bit better then how the first arc was handled, and that the last two Arcs were definitely the best as far as the VAs performances go. But it's really up to the listeners preference to decide when they find a performance acceptable to their standards.

I probably asked this already, so I'll try my best to answer :)
You would think considering on the funimation page [ www.funimation.com/whentheycry ] under products there is a link for "box set" but all we get is sadly, "COMING SOON!" So, I'm thinking it is... coming... though maybe not soon. Also I'm confused, why would they release an art box and then a box set?
They probably will just include all the dvds with the artbox or something.
Also on Robert's Anime Corner instead of listing a Higurashi box set they are just having a 'bundle'.
The bottom line: If there will be one (I hope!!) it will probably be annouced/available sometime in February, March perhaps?
Hope that helped :)
Also I'm confused, why would they release an art box and then a box set?
That's actually a pretty common thing in the anime industry. By releasing an art box, both those who bought the singles and the box set can have something to put their DVDs into.
They probably will just include all the dvds with the artbox or something.
It will probably be a thinpack since they are cheaper to produce.
Were scenes removed from the DVD versions of the episodes?
In the original version of episode 20, at the very end, when Shion's talking to Satoko on the phone, she makes a really creepy face after Rika's corpse is shown. In the DVD version she doesn't make this face.
I don't have a screencap of the face I'm talking about, but I found a picture someone drew of it in the image thread.

There's another scene I just realized was taken out.
In the original version of episode 21, at the very end, when Shion's falling to her death, she looks up at the moon and sees Satoshi's face appear on it. In the DVD version this doesn't happen.
Let me just say, I don't think these 2 missing scenes are the the only ones. As I watched the DVD versions of episodes 15-21 for the first time last night, there were several instances where I believe they removed parts of scenes, but without the ability to see the original versions anymore, I can't say for certain.
Tonight I'm going to watch the DVD versions of episodes 22-26 for the first time, if I notice any missing scenes I'll post about them later.

I believe the GIF you posted is from the beginning of episode 16 when Shion calls Mion on the telephone after she runs away from the boarding school.
I just looked and my DVD does have the scene where she sees Satoshi while looking at the moon. As for the other scene, it's not there but was it really there to begin with? Because I don't remember such scene. She does smile a little but that's it.

I just watched an old non dvd version of that scene and compared it to the DVD, both scenes are the same and Shion never makes any look like the one in the fan picture. You must have a mixed up memory of it.
EDIT: She actually does make that sort of look in the beginning part of episode 21 when she is talking on the phone with Keiichi and lying to him about the things that have been happening. You must have had that image in your mind and confused it as being part of the ending scene of the previous episode.

Yeah, Geneon was staffed by idiots at the time, and it was corrected later on.
It was supposed to be corrected, I recall Geneon actually once released a statement saying they would even ship people affected by the misprint a properly fixed cover if you sent yours in to them, however, shortly after that was when Geneon decided to cease distribution and so they likely never had the time to fix it.
I would hope that atleast once Funimation goes to release their own prints of the covers that contain the Funi logo, they will recognize and fix the proplem on their own.

That is epic.
Wish they could've used Vol 6 art, but wow...that's badass.
Oooh, leet box, for this series I may buy that one even though I do have fanservice box.
I wonder if it'd include the mini-posters..? I might buy it, but then I'd have to sell the DVDs I have (1, 2, &5). D: Depends on if it comes with any bonuses other than taking up less space.
^^ I sort of doubt it'll come with anything other than the DVDs. That's just my guess though, I haven't read anything.

It's a thinpack, it'll probably have a total of 6 discs in 3 thin cases, each with double-sided covers
This is probably how it'll be based on the Karin boxset which uses that format
Actually, after comparing the picture to other boxsets I have, it looks a little thick for a thin pack. It looks like a boxset about as thick as the FMA ones (the smaller, season one: part one-types)

My superGALS! thinpack is thicker than that (and it has 6 or so DVDs). That Higurashi one's really pretty thin..

Do the dub VAs get better over time?
Do the dub VAs get better over time?
In my opinion, yes
But whatever someone thinks of their performance is really up to their own judgment, so asking that will only get you that persons opinion.

Honestly, the voice actors get better when they have more lines. As such, Mion/Shion's voice actor is consistently good, Satoko gets better by Curse-Killing Chapter and Rena is very good by Atonement Chapter.
Rika's voice actor sounds a little better by Time-Killing Chapter, but her "Dark Rika" voice improves a lot because of the previews.
Keiichi sounds consistent, whether that's good or bad.

Theres been a lot of criticism for Rebbeca Forstadt for her voice being "to old" for her. Despite that I highly disagree with it.
Regarding the dub, Megan Hollingshead performance as Mion/Shion was the gem out the entire dub.
Keiichi's VA Grant George really needs to make a con appearance. :heh:

What? Reba West is listed as the English voice actor for Rika, with Yukari Tamura as the original voice actor.
As for sounding "too old," I'd say that it's VERY difficult to spontaneously switch from sounding young, innocent, and adorable to dark and brooding with a hint of youth. After going through a list of english voice actors that would work for the characters (Stephanie Sheh as Rena, perhaps?), I really couldn't find someone who I feel would would be spot-on.

Nope, they're the same 6 discs
However, for people who had playback issues with discs 4-6 of the original release on certain DVD players, the discs on this release should be fixed, I believe :)

I'm still debating whether or not to get this, might be too intense to show at my Anime Club, and I wonder if I really want it on my shelf to come and strangle me in the middle of the night!!
I like the use of the color images on the thinpak cases, and the negative on front, but that red text on the top kind of sticks out like a sore thumb to me.

After a while my discs would get that problem, not skipping but the subtitle problem anyways, and after a while it crashed my computer, but I'm not sure, maybe it was just my computer. And for me it was the last two discs.

Never noticed it on the first disk, but it was doing it A LOT on the second one. Was it like that in the singles? Maybe we should tell Funimation?
It seems that apparently there were some bad disks in some shipments of the boxset, however not all are like that as both me and a friend of mine have good working discs.

Ok... to all people who have faulty sets: try playing it in another DVD player. I was originally playing it in my Ps3, and switched it to my other player (which is, ironically, also made by Sony) and went to all the spots I got stuck: it worked flawlessly and the same went for the other disks in that one player.
So, try switching DVD players, and see if that does anything.
Or if you're playing it on the computer, download a program called AnyDVD and install it. There's a chance that Funimation decided to do a crappy encode/encryption/whatever for the entire set, but this should resolve that issue.
FWIW, all my discs work fine, and I've run through the series twice, so I say that with a great deal of confidence. ;)
Not that anyone probably cares, but I ordered the box set from Borders today, and I should get it in about a week and a half. :)

Wouldn't be suprising at all. I actually thought that the story would continue with new characters after Keiichi, Rena and Mion died, and then thought that the first arc was the end and that everything that happened after it was what happened before they died. That theory didn't last very long. XD

The bad news is this could simply be a rerelease of the original series.

If I recall, I'm pretty sure he mentioned that when answering a question about cross-promoting anime owned by FUNimation with their manga adaptions owned by Yen Press (i.e. Soul Eater, Nabari no Ou, Bamboo Blade, Higurashi)
So he could have just been referring to cross-promotion of the two different media, such as this ad for the anime popping up on the Higurashi manga page:
http://yenpress.us/?page_id=454
... though I certainly hope Kai could get to the US, I don't think what he said was meant to imply that :heh:
Sadly it doesn't look like Kai will get a US release, they acquired the licensed for the first season almost right after it was done being released in Japan (though they sure took a long time for these 6 DVD's to be released), while for Kai well it has been 2 yearas and there is still not a sign of it being licensed for the US yet. It could still be released though, but the longer it drags on the less chance it has of being picked up to be released in the US.

Would anyone be truly offended if season one got better voice acting (actual talent, not withstanding)?
While it would obviously be good news if Higurashi Kai were licensed, those doomsayers will probably agree that if it does come to pass, we'll still see it landing on store shelves closer to 2011. However, I would be pleasantly surprised if it was released in June.

I wouldn't mind a re-dubbing of Higurashi, I mean Geneon messed up but Funi just could't fire the VAs in the middle of the series, that'd be a dick move.

IIUC, Geneon finished dubbing the series before going bankrupt.
I think Kai may have a chance of coming here, but things on the business side may be holding things up because of what happened to Geneon.
In the end it comes down to these factors I believe:
1. Cost to license the series.
2. Will the series be profitable enough in the US to justify said licensing cost in addition to cost of production (dubbing, packaging, and other jobs put into these things)
3. Who is trying to license the series (Japanese companies usually prefer the same company that owns a season 1 be the same company to own season 2, in this case Geneon USA still owns the series, while FUNimation distributes it. But as far as we know, Geneon USA has no intention of trying to license any more series', and who knows what FUNimation is doing about Geneon sequels, or if the Japanese side even wants them to have it.)
Basically, we have no idea what's going on behind the scenes, and all we can do is guess.

Well, considered that money wasted, for we introduce WHEN THEY CRY REDEUX!!! I was totally thinking that :D
I like the current voices for Shmion and Takano (she sounds like she can pull it off). Kari Wahlgreen gets close to sounding like Satoko (see Tsuruya). Michelle Ruff can certainly sound gritty enough for Dark Rika, but I just don't see her sounding as cute as Rika (it would be nice to see her prove me wrong). All the others on that mock list in combination could very well create an even worse version.
In all seriousness, there's nothing wrong with paying for a high-quality product. Just like everything else, it comes down to personal preference on what you consider a "better" version of the voices would be. Although Mion/Shion's VA was probably the most talented from this set, I highly doubt anyone would cling to the other VA's for a redubbing.

Also, Funi IS doing a redub of Initial D, which kind also defeats the purpose of the older DVD's. In turn also opens up a chance of a redub for Higurashi. Shmion, Keiichi, and Takano I could bear with. Rena's got better as the series progressed.

I agree Carrie Savage would make a good Rena.
The thing is, they have to be able to do the laugh right. There is normal Rena, "Take Home mode overload" Rena. "It's ok if its you K1" Rena (defenseless moe Rena). Defend her friend (badass) Rena, and There is "I'm know what you did/I'll going to kill you" Rena, and then there is "Insane laughter" Rena.
Whoever does Rena has to be able to hit all of these for her to come across correctly.

Not necessarily, I believe the original dub of Initial D edited music or something and made other changes people didn't like... which is why I believe it's getting redubbed in the first place.
On the other hand Higurashi's dub is very faithful to the original and has no reason to be redubbed... which is why it hasn't been and probably never will be

If anyone is a member of the Funimation boards there is a fairly strong Higurashi community and most of them are part of a thread thats a signature drive to get Kai released..

Yay Audri! The fanbase here is actually larger than what most people think.

I really hope that Funimation at least starts releasing the half-season sets by July of next year, or maybe i'm asking too much. Heck, they haven't even licensed it yet. :upset:
Do I hear a New Years a Go-Go 2010 with Higurashi Kai for the last night?

In that Funimation Q&A video, it turns out that Initial D is getting a full redub from scratch. With this in mind, it wouldn't be out of the question for Funimation to redub Higurashi if the company feels the Geneon version to be unsatisfactory.
The speaker comments: "The last 4 or 5 shows we were at, we either sold out of When They Cry box sets or ran down...to the last 1 or 2 [copies]...Hopefully we'll get the second season, I know I'd love to see it."
This shows from a sales standpoint (Funimation's favorite kind) that it is the company's best interest to utilize the series to its fullest potential. That would be included but not limited to a redub of season 1 as well as the dub and release of season 2.
@AudriSampson: The internet rep answered that question for one AudriSonozaki. I see what you did there. ;)

I'd love it if they'd pick up Kai and redub the first season. The dub, while not totally unwatchable, was definately lacking. The fact that I still watch the fansub version after having bought the DVDs when I usually prefer to watch dubbed says something...
Hopefully the sales figures and/or some nudging from fans within the company will lead to a redub if/when they pick up Kai. I'd be more than happy to buy the set again solely for a second chance on the dub. ^^

That's not how it necessarily works.
Initial D had it's music edited, aswell with major complaints about the dub, and cuts. Higurashi didn't have edits, or cuts. The dub itself is a solid B effort by most of the VA's (Aside from Satoko's)
It's more than likely they'll get the second season because since the first has good sales it prompts Funi to check out, and see how well it's worth to license.
Chris Patton or Jerry Jewell could easily make a good Keiichi.

I don't want Higurashi to get redubbed, the dub is fine the way it is,I actually kinda like it even though it has its faults, but you cant expect it to be perfect. I'd rather Higurashi Kai than a redub anyday.

Everyone wants Kai released, regardless. You can't blame us for aspiring to higher standards.

Redub? Why would it need a redub, the dub is good as it is. I could understand them redubbing the early episodes, the VAs sound different in later episodes, but we can leave it as Vocal Evolution.
Kai..So, it may come out within the next year? I doubt they would cliff hang a series, by releasing only part of the series, subbed or dubbed.

They'll probably release the 2nd season in volumes like they did with the first one, and then release the complete box-set approximately a year later.
So yeah if they do get the rights I hope it'll be soon.~

I meant, it would be unlikely for them to just show the first season, and not the second season be it dubbed or subbed.
But, it's been confirmed they're dubbing Kai, right?

Not entirely no, but they did say the first season is selling very well so they're very well considering it and it's very likely they will.

If FUNimation were to license Kai, I don't see it being released like this considering FUNimation is pretty much abandoning the "6 DVD singles" release pattern and has taken on 12-13 episode cour sets as their primary method of release
So if FUNimation were to release Kai, I'd expect two sets, one with episodes 1-13, and another with 14-24
This is of course if they license the series, which I hope they will someday...

So I got my box-set today and I'm in the midst of watching it right now.~
Gotta say the VA's don't always sound like they fit their role, but I gotta commend them on REALLY getting into it. The emotion is very noticeable.~
