View Full Version : Depression
I sort of feel for somthing that will realy break you down if you know what i mean?
An anime that will cruch your heart that sort of thing.
It can end happily but I need somthing that will make the soul cry on the way there, a storie that is so horrible, so beautiful that you don't want it to end...
(hope I didn't ask for to much...)

If you're looking for sad/beautiful animes I'd suggest Figure 17.
The first DVD is out in the states and the second one should come January 13th. (Note that one episode is twice as long as a regular one).
It starts out happy and light and tells a very sensitive story. You should keep watching at least until about episode 6 where it gets sad. The ending is very beautiful but it also wet my eyes.
I recommend Kimi ga Nozomu Eien and Kanon. The former ended just last Saturday at episode 14. You can find both of them by looking under Series at the Animesuki mainpage.
Hmm, Now and Then, Here and There seems to fit this description pretty well.

Kanon and Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien for normal sadness
Saishuu Heiki Kanojo (Saikano) for extreme sadness (licensed tough), btw what happy ending after epi 10, I know what you mean but at that point I was about to commit ritual suicide :heh: because of how depressing this anime got.

Nah its not that bad, it wont crush you. I has intense moments and its got some sad moments but i found it beutifuly uplifting in the end and i didnt feel depressed afterwards. Now if you want something that will crush you watch "Grave of the Fireflys" if you can stand to watch (i had trouble).

Again: X/1999. Yeah, it has its action, but the story...sad. Both the ending and the end music is definately a tear jerker.

It is a sense of pathos they looking for I guess. Things like why Spartans and their allies make their fateful stand at Thermopylae in 480 BC.

Gee, I love depressing stuff, it's cathartic. Here are some series which not just depressing romance stuff (which is neat but less tragic in a way...)
Tenshi ni Narumon! (my favorite series) starts out like a goofy comedy but gets really depressing at least 3 times. There is some great depressing music too - I never see this show get any justice (._.)
More (roughly ranked by preference):
Shoujo Kakumei Utena (the movie is a comedy tho)
Oniisama E AKA Brother, Dear Brother (I LOVE this one! available on fansubbed tapes)
Brigadoon
GunBuster!
Rose of Versailles (torrents)
Haibane Renmei
Gatekeepers 21 OAV
Hoshi no Koe
Please Save My Earth
Narutaru (you can still find torrents for this)
Risky/Safety
Almost all of these have been licensed, which may or may not make a point as to the quality and/or popularity of these shows and this sort of thing in general. In fact Shin Seiki Evangelion is depressing as hell and is many people's all-time favorite.
I will mention St. Luminous Mission High School, which is not really cathartic but more of a representation of depression or something. You can still find torrents for it. Niea Under 7 is like that too but it's licensed.
I won't argue with the picks other people made, I am just suggesting more titles. I hope you find something you like here.
This is excelent!
All the Titles I could ever want.
I'ts not that I am depressed... realy!
It's just that I feel sort of thin...
So, like Gaara finds his meaning in killing I find mine in the pain of the stories.

sai kano is way, way too depressing.. to the point where it becomes ridiculous and funny. watch the first half and then stop, because it only gets stupid after that.
Aah... I heard that Full Moon wo Sagashite is depressing (though it looks like most of it is very cheerful/magical girl-y)
Some episodes of FullMetal Alchemist have also been very sad (my heart felt squeezed >_< ! )
Yami no Matsuei (licensed and on DVD) was also pretty sad ^^; but the manga was much much sadder (lots and lots of very depressing stories written better than their anime versions...)

Wolf's Rain sad??
It sure had a gloomy atmosphere going for it but I never found it sad. The saddest part about it was the fact that the ending sucked so much :heh:

I couldn't watch it past ep 3 :heh:
Each is to his own tastes, though. As for "sad animes", go watch chobits or something, it'll make you feel sorry for massive anime fans :p.

Princess Tutu was pritty sad, and it even had a kind of depresed atmosphere, though Pike, Lili and Neko-sensei kind of broke the tension, though over all i would give it a 7/10 on the depressing scale. However, I don't really have much to compare it with since i haven't seen any of the shows stated above.
Oh My!!
What have I started?
Oh well... Anyway I'm folloing up as manny tips as I can, but I must say that Saikano is the most destructive anime I've ever seen and I haven't even seen the last three (the sad ones) eps yet...
But thanks again for taking intresst!

I think that Narutaru is probably the most depressing show I have seen in a long time... I know I have been posting alot about this one but it really hits you where it counts in the end. Sorta sneaks up on you the way they did it. Gunslinger Girl is looking like it will be getting very much more dark before the last 3 eps I think it is are out. I even thought that Tiny Snow Fairy Sugar was pretty depressing, but only if you watch it all the way through and watch the specials they added in the end. Kind of a reminscent sadness... I dunno, I tend to get a little too into some shows and feel all down at the loss of one of the characters. Don't listen to anyone if they suggest you download BLAME! . They told me it was thought provoking and even a little moody... but it is just a bunch of random shorts that mean absolutely nothing unless you have read the manga I guess. I got the jist of it and all but it was still just an abstract mess in the end.

Rahxephon is pretty depressing but with a happy ending..
Hoshi no Koe is the most depressing anime ever imho.. beautiful and sad..it's only 25 min long but it achieves more than what alot of other animes can achieve in a whole 13-eps series

Now and then, Here and there was very sad for me. It was uplifting at the end but I still could not forget some the deaths.

Has anyone recommended NGE? In my opinion, it is one of the best sad animes out there. It's been liscenced by Gainax for some time though.

the saddest movie (noticed I didn't say Anime Movie) is grave of the fireflies. I've never cried in a movie, series, etc. but with this movie i was sobbing and crying like iff my mother would died. totally recommended.

Hey, is that a pun? As if my mother died [refering to Grave of the Fireflies]?
N/m. Bad joke. Trying to throw some cheer into a depressing thread.

Quite a few moments in Cowboy Bebop left me very sad ... i even get sad now when i think back. Good SciFi anime with plenty of sad.

Yeah, Evangelion is quite sad at times, but in a good cathartic way. Plus I think it helps you understand depression itself. I hear Anno, one of the main creators, was going through major depression at the time and this helped him work though it.
Yeah, Bebop has gotten me all misty eyed and emotional.
Also, Escaflowne got me at times and in the ending. Also Fruits Basket got to me a number of times. Then again when we were showing them at club I had jsut gone trhough a break up, but I think those shows kinda helped me through it. Not that I'm still not drepressed as hell sometimes.
Oh and not quite depressing, but more contemplative at the saddness of the world is Kino's Journeys. I love this show. Just got the first DVD.

I would have to say .hack was once of the most depressing animes i have ever seen. It was also one of the worst. The story was horrible, the only reason i got threw it was so I could get some sort of resolution. I wouldn't recommend this anime, but it is truely depressing. For some good titles you should check out.

Kare Kano was very sad.. Toaching and sad..
i'm suprised that gunmm (aka battle angel alita) wasn't mentioned. that anime was filled with human emotion and sadness where ever you look.
but the biggest one is grave of the fireflies as mentioned before, i consider myself desensitised of most human emotion because i've been watching horor movies since i was little, but i was crying after i saw that. i had to take a walk to control myself from breaking down on the floor.
Gotta agree with whoever said Figure 17. It wasn't permanently depressing, but it was really very sad. Gehhhhh... -_- I cried my eyes out...and then I cried some more. And then I went straight to bed so I wouldn't have to think about it any more. I haven't actually finished the series yet (at ep 11) so maybe it'll end on a happy note. *crosses fingers*

If Tenshi ni Narumon! is recommended, then I have to add...
Fruits Basket
I know it looks like a total comedy, but underlying everything is the twin plot elements of the Sohmas' curse and the death of Tohru's mother, which makes it much more emotional than the average gag series.
In particular, episodes 8, 15, and 24-26 were all incredibly depressing.
