Tsukikage Ran.
Its like an old school jidaigeki. Its short, only 13 eps, but it is badass. Its about a female samurai who travels around Edo era Japan with a spunky kung fu chick. They kick ass, get drunk, and get into misadventures. The fight scenes are superb...the swordplay in this series is the real deal.
not samurai but with good sword fight scenes:
Le Chevalier D' Eon - although its not totally action oriented
Juuni Kokki
Jubei-chan - basically comedy but action scenes are rather good
Utawarerumono - some scenes...you have to wait for that particular character to appear
Shura no Toki
2nd Shura no Toki (http://anidb.info/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=1663) and Tsukikage Ran (http://anidb.info/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=407)
1st half of Otogizoushi (http://anidb.info/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=1958)
Maybe Afro Samurai (http://anidb.info/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=2656) lol. If nothing else, from watching the first episode I saw that the action was pretty slick.

Ok, revival of old thread.
So ive checked out all of above.
Anymore guys?
On a side note... is midori days any good? Humour wise?
Midori Days is good. It's a nice anime if you don't want something heavy. The story got a bit serious near the end, but for the most part it's a comedy/romance.

Definetly! Midori Days is a great romantic comedy. The concept sounds kind of silly at first, but the characters are so great you quickly get past that.

You might want to consider watching
Groove Adventure Rave (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=1784)
Busou Renkin (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=6601)
Both are not the samurai type but it does have sword fighting scene. I find them really great. Hope that helps! :)

Gintama :D
It's comedy but not a lot of samurai action and etc. Not for the beginning at least so I saw but the later episodes i'm not so sure.
Strictly speaking, the characters aren't samurai and the fight scenes involved more weapons than just swords but I'm surprised that nobody's mentioned Seirei no Moribito (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guardian_of_the_Sacred_Spirit) yet.
