Considering it's announced on today of all days (April 1st), I'm going to have to wait and see. But to use the classic cliche, I'm "cautiously optimistic".

oh yeah... if this is in the fall, isn't that when Zero's Familiar will be airing?
that'll be interesting :D
I'll be adding all the released volumes of the shounen light novel Shakugan no SHANA to the first post of this thread soon.
This news got me so excited, I already have woken up two of my friends to tell them this :heh:

Zero will air in July, no date yet.
Like everyone else, I'm hoping that this isn't joke.
Good thing that it will air in Fall, all R1 DVD's are release by then. 2007 is now an official Rie Kugimiya year. ;)

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGGGH!!!! :D This calls for a celebration. And here I thought they were just doing some recap movie. If it is an April Fool's joke than I don't think its funny. Regardless a lot of people would be so pissed off they might have to actually do a second season to avoid civil unrest. Last thing I remember from Season 1 was Shana was naked again. Spent half the series naked or in bandages if I recall.

There is a recap movie:

But I don't care about this movie, I want a second season >.<

Official announcement. Yay~
I know the Shana anime was adapted from the novels, I think so.
So, from which volume of the novel do you think season two will start?

Lol at Takahashi-san's outfit. Is it really that embarassing? :heh:

Probably around vol.7
Lol at Takahashi-san's outfit. Is it really that embarassing? :heh:Pretty much. I saw previous photographs of him wearing the same outfit. So, this is the price authors of popular titles have to pay in Japan? Or is everything just in their heads? :heh:

Well I hope they get everything in order. I want to see what happens with Hecate, she didn't seem all that villanious like the rest of the Bal Masque, and Mamiko Noto's voice her during the Yuuji semi-raping scene still haunts me to this day. Then just when we may have found out more about her character and that she may be more than a void, the series up and ended with her being rescued by Sydonay.

Since it is April 2, it is now safe to say that this is not an April Fool's joke!
The anime announcement is still on the official site (http://www.shakugan.com/) and many reliable Japanese sites are also mentioning the new season.
You may now rejoice. Just try to say something interesting, not just a mere "Yay" if you want to rejoice in the thread. I am quite happy indeed. Quite happy. My only concern is how they will re-adapt the book considering how the show has veered from the source material. What with the removal of the scene in the novel where Yuuji absorbs some of Sydonay's power and the anime's addition of an entire story arc of notable importance at the end of the first season, I wonder how things will be handled.

I don't think it will be too much of a problem to get the show back on track. Shakugan no Shana strikes me as a show where each story arc is pretty self-contained, and it's not like important characters got killed off at the end of the first season or something. That first ending felt really open-ended to me. I see no problem there, just start with a fresh arc or something.
Anyway, that's some good news. This will be a fun year for Rie Kugimiya fans, no?
Darco_emp
2007-04-02, 04:11
I guess it can start at end of where the proper arc left off which is Chapter 2 of Vol 9 I think. Hack where it starts at or even some filler is not important, rejoice on more Shana
The announcement is still on the official site, so yay its true. It makes good sense with so much more to come from the Novel --- though i hate them for releasing the news on April 1st. :3

Oh. My. God. :D I totally love the Fall anime season~ Gimme!
What's really enjoyable about this is that we're going from milking back into the actual storyline. Most series will just finish, leave it at that, but make a poor effort at keeping the fandom alive with spinoffs and cheesy OVAs. Having a series, especially one of such beauty, returning to its storyline after many not-so-epic spinoffs is such a bold thing to do.
I can only hope the new opening and ending songs are just as lovable. So far, Yoake Umare Kuru Shoujo has remained in my top five Japanese songs since I first heard it. :heh:

I agree, I wanted to know more about that. Gut feeling, a little info on the latest novels (and some accidental reading of Wikipedia) tells me that it's going to be about... How the Reiji Maigo's been contaminated, and how Fileth and her former lover, Johan, fit into the picture..
I remember Sushi-Y mentioning something about it..

Story behind Reiji should be covered in the up coming season since it is in a large part of the novel.
Since Vol. 12 (I think) does cover how Fileth made Reiji so that she could have an eternity with her lover Johan, and in the company of Wilhelmina, Johan and Fileth was attacked by 坏刀(?) and Johan was destoryed. Fileth sealed Johan into Reiji before he disappears, but something else was put in there too due to this as well, from my memory anyway. and as for Reiji to end up with Yuj it's not yet clear yet as to is it chance or someones is pulling the strings.
Btw, That something appears in Vol 14 and since its a key point in story I'll just leave it as it is. Just note that the Fuzetsu Yuji uses is sliver.

I thought the OP1 and ED1 were exquisite (and each with a very different feel). OP2 and ED2... not so much. But I also have high hopes for season 2! The bgm composition was quite good as well, though not up to the standards of, say, Scrapped Princess.
I'm secretly hoping for a filler episode where Shana or Hecate is scouted to become an idol, generating gratuitous character songs =)

Different styles of shows, and different musical composers, so i can't see how you can say one is better then the other when they're none alike. I love Ko Otani's music for Shakugan no Shana, fits the mood perfectly --- and i of course hope that he'll be back again for the second season.

Different styles of shows, and different musical composers, so i can't see how you can say one is better then the other when they're none alike. I love Ko Otani's music for Shakugan no Shana, fits the mood perfectly --- and i of course hope that he'll be back again for the second season.
To me it's a dual question of:
1) How much did the music support the content, both in setting a tone/mood and in increasing the emotional connection/impact?
2) How memorable is the music - can I whistle it, recall a scene from a melody (or vice versa), and enjoy listening to it on its own?
In my opinion, Kou Outani does a good job overall in category 1; and a good job in category 2 for a few tracks, whereas most seemed to have little value outside of the anime (and thus were purely bgm). On the other hand, the (instrumental) soundtracks of Scrapped Princess (Hikaru Nanase), Mai Hime (Yuki Kajiura), and Vampire Princess Miyu (Kenji Kawai) are all excellent in both categories.
So even though it is purely based on personal opinion, it's still an objective comparison scheme. Please don't misunderstand me - I also feel Outani is a good composer, and want him to return in Shana II. I find that about 70% of anime that I like has a garbage soundtrack that I don't even notice (or occasionally, dislike) when I'm watching, and find every track to be either uninteresting or irritating when I listen to the OST. Thus, Outani is one of the few anime soundtrack composers who stand above the crowd, and I look forward to what he'll do next time. But despite having a good soundtrack by a good composer, Shakugan no Shana is not on the shortlist of names I associate with the phrase, "Anime memorable for their instrumental soundtracks".
Ah well, this is where we all fall into our own lil' holes in the floor --- i've enjoyed the OST & three assorted soundtracks from Shakugan no Shana, and find myself enjoying each track whenever i play. Sure there are tracks that stand out compared to the rest, but each one of them is an important piece of music which i find myself enjoying a lot.
Sames goes for his work on Tenpou Ibun Ayakashi Ayashi, though that leaves you with the feel of SoTC, which is never a bad thing. :3

Dengeki Bunko (http://comipedia.com/light-novel-label/dengeki-bunko); the label which Shakugan no SHANA light novels are published under, aims at teenage males (boys) and above, though this label (Dengeki Bunko) aims more at male otakus, but still its a shounen label (a label for boys).
So yeah, Shakugan no SHANA light novels are shounen light novels.

Well He did use it against Wilhelmina at Vol.9, I think is was when she wanted to destroy Yuji again after Shana stopped her in the first time. I belive this is the first time Yuji did something useful and did some damgage in battle .
Still Yuji does not really use it for combat since after that win over Wilhelmina Yuji starts 自在法 training, and mastered the basic of the basic Fuzetsu at Vol. 11. At Vol 13 apprantly when Yuji got slammed into a car from top of the roof, the car got wrecked and Yuji is fine :heh:. btw Vol. 13 is also where Shana asks about "How do you make a baby"

I need to clarify, is Shakugan no Shana Seinen or Shounen? I can sense that its Shounen myself, but the wikipedia entry states that it is Seinen.
I need to clarify, is Shakugan no Shana Seinen or Shounen? I can sense that its Shounen myself, but the wikipedia entry states that it is Seinen.
Then someone should correct that entry.
Let me say this one more time, this time I'll go a little more with explanation:
MediaWorks started a lablel for boys* in 1993, this label is titled Dengeki Bunko, and whats published under this label are light novels, hence its a shounen muke light novel label, meaning: a light novel label for boys.
Every month lots of light novels are published by MediaWorks under the Dengeki Bunko label, all of these light novels are aimed at boys.
Anything published under the Dengeki Bunko label is aimed at boys, be it fantasy light novel, action light novel, romance light novel, comedy light novel, or whatever.
Shakugan no SHANA was published under the Dengeki Bunko label, hence its a shounen light novel (a light novel for boys).
Here are a list (as small as it is right now) of shounen light novels that got published under the shounen label Dengeki Bunko:
http://comipedia.com/light-novel-label/dengeki-bunko
Be it: Inukami!, Kino no Tabi, Shinigami no Ballad, Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora, ... these are light novels published under the Dengeki Bunko label and aimed at boys.
==========
How do I know if its a light novel for boys from MediaWorks ???
Well, you check the cover of the light novel, and if it has the Dengeki Bunko label on it, then its a light novel for boys thats published by MediaWorks.
For example, lets look at the first light novel of Shakugan no SHANA: here in this link (http://ec2.images-amazon.com/images/P/4840222185.09._SCLZZZZZZZ_V45955834_SS500_.jpg).
Do you see whats on the right corner of the cover?
This:
http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/6524/dengekihj5.gif = Dengeki Bunko
Yes the above is the Dengeki Bunko label, and so this light novel is a shounen light novel (a light novel for boys).
==========
What about light novels for females? Shoujo light novels? well there are female oriented light novels, but these light novels are published under labels for females. Dengeki Bunko is not a label for females, anything published under the Dengeki Bunko label, whatever it is, is aimed at males (more accurately: aimed at boys).
MediaWorks: the publisher of the Dengeki Bunko label.
* for boys = aimed at boys.
A big thanks for the informative answer and I accepted everything except... I thought Shinigami no Ballad was Seinen. I admit I never really got into the series, but from what I know about it its definitely not something that's "for boys" per se.

Its the same with some manga titles serialized in shounen magazines, for example Death Note, some prefer to call it seinen(young men's) manga just becuase it has adult themes, but still if you want to go by the publisher definition, Death Note is a shounen manga since the publisher published it in a shounen(boy's) manga magazine.
The japanese wiki is listing Shinigami no Ballad anime as "shounen muke anime" = anime for boys. why ? becuase the light novel is published under the Dengeki Bunko label which is a shounen label according to the publisher.

Does anyone else feel that Sakai Yuji is absolutely crap in the novel? A whiner in almost every instance. He was protrayed so much better in the anime, showing glimpse of guts.

Lol Death Note is so screaming SHOUNEN with its good-looking/intelligent/talented male protogonist plus almost mirror image antagonist, people boys can look up to. I enjoy death note for its intelligent plot, but not as much as I would if I was younger.
Well.. I'm buying the Shinigami no Ballad light novels when Seven Seas publishes them. Hopefully they'll be more Seinen than Shounen.

oh you are so nice...
A big thanks for the informative answer and I accepted everything except... I thought Shinigami no Ballad was Seinen. I admit I never really got into the series, but from what I know about it its definitely not something that's "for boys" per se.The thing is, lots of these anime are produced for hardcore audiences only, thus they air at very late hours, usually after midnight, which implies that the target audiences for those anime are a bit older. The anime's target audience for titles such as Shakugan no Shana usually *is* the seinen crowd, young men, excluding younger audiences with their late night program time slots. It doesn't matter if the original publishing label is shounen or seinen because primary spenders are going to be young males.
What I think NeoSam has tried to elaborate on these boards a few times already is that no matter what time the title airs, or what spending market is actually behind it, or what the fans think (:)) anime that were originally stories published under certain publishing labels will always be labeled after their orientation, be them seinen, shounen, shoujo, josei labels etc. Why? Because that's just the way it is. The audience tag of a title certainly doesn't mean that a lot of elementary school kids actually watch the said title, if anyone is worried about that. Different audience tags are just very useful when it comes to vast publishing markets, because they catalogue the market to basic groups, and consumers don't need to spend too much time finding new titles to enjoy this way.
The thing is, lots of these anime are produced for hardcore audiences only, thus they air at very late hours, usually after midnight, which implies that the target audiences for those anime are a bit older. The anime's target audience for titles such as Shakugan no Shana usually *is* the seinen crowd, young men, excluding younger audiences with their late night program time slots. It doesn't matter if the original publishing label is shounen or seinen because primary spenders are going to be young males.
Yeah exactly.
Zero no Tsukaima anime was also broadcasted late at night and aimed at the seinen crowd, but the light novel was published under the MF Bunko J label which is a label aimed at boys (shounen label).

Without labels it would be hell >.< you'll end up spending lots of time just to find light novels that might appeal to you, and even after you buy stuff, you might not like what you bought, because they didn't exactly appeal to you.
With these labels that aime at your gender, you can be sure that these light novels are made to appeal to you, you don't have to suffer financially nor lose time looking for stuff you might or might not like.
Here's a list of light novel labels and their target audience: (seijin -> for adult males)

Anyway, I still haven't shown any excitement towards the second season of Shakugan no SHANA anime, damn it, start already :heh: I can't wait that long >.<
Just wondering but will this end up as pre-licensed? Since seeing the first season is already licensed.
Just wondering but will this end up as pre-licensed? Since seeing the first season is already licensed. It probably already is licensed, just not announced yet. Anyway... *rubs his R2 DVDs* :p
I just joined this site hoping to learn about the Novels and Manga because I have never seen them. One day a friend told me about this anime and after the first episode it became my favorite anime. I watched all 24 episodes in the span of 2 days and was looking for something alike Shana and stumbled across Zero no Tsukaima(which I also like). After I finished watching that, I was somewhat sad that only a movie was coming out for Shana and wrote an email to Takashi Watanabe asking him to continue(I typed in english and japanese with help from babel fish lol). And then a few weeks later another series was announced. I'm so glad.
Now I'm wondering is it agaisnt this forum's rules to ask for the novel and manga links? If so sorry! But I would appreciate it.

I think forum rule 1.1 should help you out but I will answer your question here. Yes...it is against the rules since both Shana manga + anime is already licensed. So far, vol 1 of Shana has been released.

Hope they cut down on that love triangle plot or should I say take out that girl that likes Yuuji I was annoyed by her character. Didn't care much for that blond woman character either she was rather cliche character hoping they give her more depth in the 2nd season. I guess that's pretty much the only big problems I had with the 1st season.

Hmm...I'm not all that much for love triangles, but unless it gets resolved, I don't think we'll be seeing the last of it.
As for Margery, she still has the issue with the Silver Tomogara, something which I would love to see. Here's to hoping that they will be showing what happened in the novels, even all the way through the flashbacks of Mathilda, Wilhelmina and Merihim.

I saw a teaser trailer of Shakugan no Shana Second today at the Rondo Robe, which I'm sure will be available on the offcial site soon as well.
Not much to discuss except for the three keywords:
1. Love triangle
2. New Characters
3. Johan
The five seiyuu guests who appeared today (Kugimiya Rie/Shana, Hino Satoshi/Yuuji, Kawasumi Ayako/Kazumi, Nabatame Hitomi/Margery, and Itou Shizuka/Wilhelmina all were excited about doing the second season.

I generally like sad endings a lot more and would like it if someone (or some people) actually died. Well, dying isn't a requirement, as long as it's sad I guess. I can also live with a happy ending depending on its execution.

for me the bad side for happy endings is that they are usually rushed and dont make enough sense. usually suddenly everybody becomes happy. and it is easier to remember sad endings.
on topic: comparing yuji with his similars he is pansy and not. for example comparing him to zero's saito he is lower than worst. but there are many other series in which main lead irritates me. the thing with this series is that his weakness actually makes sense considering story and he never irritates me. i still hope that he will gain some new talents (i am a not a novel-reader btw)

Uh, Saito is almost in a class of his own. Well, considering characters like Lelouch and Kazuma surfacing...;) Yuuji, on the other hand, should be considered stronger than how people look at him. He certainly didn't lose control of his emotions like Shinn Asuka did, and nor did he keep on moping until some random girl cheers him up eventually like Keitaro. Considering the fact that he has yet to discover any offensiveness with his power, Yuuji's doing pretty well.
I doubt Yuuji would turn to being a flame haze though.
Considering the fact that he has yet to give a straight answer to Kazumi, who has already known part of the truth about the Crimson World, Yuuji would be selfish just to choose like that without untangling the messy little love triangle he's in (Well, technically Ike is in it, but doesn't have much of a part :p ). Choosing to be a Flame Haze means choosing danger. Despite everything he's been through, Yuuji certainly wouldn't want Shana to protect him AGAIN while he gets used to fighting in the front lines more than ever.

at times like these you throw away "what ifs" and just do what you think is best...that is yoshida's mind set atm...she wants yuuji and is willing to fight for him until he says yes or no...(but knowing the guy hes undecisive even if its obvious that he does like shana...

I don't think it's been specifically stated how the aging-process works. In the flashback episodes with Shana's training, Maid-girl (forget her name lol) was buying food from a modern Conbini store, so I'm thinking that Shana hasn't been a flame haze for that long. And I would think it would be a long-term liability to not be like in the young 20s before "stopping age" even if they do. (Although strength and power in the show don't seem to be directly tied to body size, etc.)

when a new flame haze showed up ( the one who used yoshida to tune the misaki city, forgot his name), margery referred to him as geezer IIRC. From the looks he seemed to be a little kid. so i belive after u make the contract your physical age does not change.

correct. also, Margery isn't "young" either : she commented once she fought for decades (or centuries?), to hunt down Silver.
IIRC, Khamsin is one of the oldest Flame Hazes.
it is clear that Flame Hazes are much more like torch than human beings. (i think alastor commented about this fact too)

Are you kidding me... Compared to Shana Yoshida is very docile... I mean she is timid and shy, while Shana is more extrovert and not to mention violent and from the looks of the poster above me.. Yuji would still have a easier time dealing with Yoshida than with Shana....
Not that i'm taking sides on which girl i prefer it's just that i like Yoshida as well and the love triangle is one of the factors that make this show interesting.....

But when it comes to yuji she is very considerate and timid. whenever they do it (practicing) she always warns him to leave enough for him to live:heh: As a serious comment i belive in the recent anime trends lolis always have the upper hand over their love rivals. So i say shana.

Can't believe you are comparing shana to pokemon.... For one thing the slow deterioration in pokemon was due to them dragging it on for an extremely long time... Extremely Extremely long and i doubt shana would ever get that long.

Actually if you watched season 1 you'll notice there are alot of unresolved plot and the ending wasn't even that much of a ending hinting to a second season..
Just a few examples of unresolved issues they can concentrate on next season (i feel they will be even more interesting for the second season)
The love triangle now going on between Yoshida, Yuji and Shana.. As of season 1 it has yet to be resolved and i'm looking forward to some conflict between yoshida and shana.
Also the person that dawl is searching for is yet to be known.
Not to mention Hectate is still in the race so expect to see her make a reappearance.

I'm not actually focusing on too much about the bad guys as that would just turn out to be bleach or naruto where you just have 1 baddy after another for 200 plus eps..
What i'm more interested in are the character developments that will occur between them as they face off against the bad guys and i only mention those in my examples because those bad guys either have a deep connection with a character's past or represent and deep concept that has to be dealt with e.g. Hectate and her issue with being empty..

Phew. I just finished SnS two days ago, and I gotta say that it was really painful to watch from 8 to 24 in a single day, considering the amount of turn-offs in the relationship between Yuji and Shana. Damn pansy can't even say "me too" before she releases Alastor.
But discussion about the first season shouldn't go in here, so I won't start it, even if I'd love to :heh:.
And yes, I'm really looking forward for both the release of the Movie and the Second season, although I'm not really digging the character designs in Devard's scan. Shana looks like a chibi-ed version of Inuyasha's Kagome with those rounder-than-normal eyes.
But anything is something, right? The only thing I need to complain about Shakugan no Shana is that now I need to get a job to fulfill my anime-related expenses. So many PVC figurines to buy, so little time...
And, wait a second. Did Shana-tan really get into the real anime this time? If you look closely, doesn't the grinning face in the low right-hand corner, right below Margery's shot look like Yoshida Kazumi * Light and thunder *? It could well be another character, but hell, if she becomes one of the bad-guys and Shana slices her in half it's party at my house. ( And yes, I despise her. )
But I digress. And wow, is it me or the 2007 fall season promises to be one of the most intense ever? Haruhi, Shana, Gundam... phew, looks like I'll beed a bigger hard drive.

To be fair, let's remember that Yuji *never sees* any of the cute/kind Shana moments (making bento, wearing yukata, etc), only we the audience do, since fate always steps in and messes it up. Practically all he gets is urusai x 3 and a regular beating in training, and when Wilhermina shows up things get even worse. Yoshida's the first other person to learn about him being a torch, so I think it's understandable how he would be so moved that, even knowing that he isn't human anymore she would still reach out to him like that.

There were alot of loose ends in the first season. Here are some (they might be spoilers so don't read this if you haven't seen the first season):
1) Shana never kissed Yuuji. (This is actually a major thread which Shana discussed with the mom. The mom said you should only kiss someone you completely trust.) If you paid attention during the ending, you'll realize that hand-holding and hugging are the only things the two have shared.
2) Blond-haired Magarey Dew never finds the silver flamed tomoguro that killed her familly.
3) Several characters were introduced but have not yet developed including: K____sami (the rock-element wielding flame haze that fixed the disturbance); The Spiral Organ/Spell-caster Rammy; Willhimea (does she has a motive or personallity?) and all of the villians that escaped at the end of the first season. I also bet that skeleton tomogaru that trained Shana will return intact, and that Yuji's mom will continue to give moral advice from an important but under-valued support role.
4) Alastor's destructive summoning and transformation seemed utterly pointless. I'm expecting Shana to need to cause destruction on a large scale in the second season.
5) Rammy implies that Yuji has special powers as the wielder of Reiji Meio beyond the ability to a continuous existance. But he shuts-up, lowers his hat and leaves dramatically without explaining. Note also that Rammy still hasn't used the unrestricted spell that he's been planning to use for hundreds of years.
6) Yuji shows he can 'do something' by picking up that giant sword (Blugeon?) and tossing it at a gear at the end of the first season. As he does so, a spell is unleashed on the ground, hinting at one more use for the Reiji Meio. He's proved that he is capable of 'doing something' (in a way the peers who couldn't lift the Blugeon couldn't). He has potential to fight at Shana's side since his flame-ring enables him to be there without being hurt by her element.
7) The strength of Shana's flame increased whenever she was with Yuji. No reason is ever given.
8) Why Yuji can move in a fuzetsu is never completly explained. However now that his peers all have items which allow them to move in a fuzetsu, we can safely assume is has to do with his houden.
Once these loose ends are resolved we'll know that the real ending of the series is within sight. I haven't personally read the light novels (they are in Japanese after-all) so I can't speculate beyond the things I've observed while re-watching the first season of the animated series.

Not quite right there, I believe Yuji shares his 'power of existence' with Shana, thusly allowing her to increase the intensity of her flame; at various points they were training for it too... As for why he can move within a fuzetsu, it's revealed in the first episode or rather implied that because he's a Mistes... Or at least that's what I gathered.

@Robotnik:
Well, yeah... you're absolutely right - Yuji rarely sees the cute side of Shana, and the fact she finds it very hard to convey her emotions makes it even more difficult. But there are some moments in which even I would realize her feelings. Appearing at the festival in a Yukata, going after him and Yoshida at the pool, offering her beloved Melon-pan to him in hopes he'd eat it insead of Yoshida's bento and a number of other things. Hell, in that ending, when she's one step away from blowing herself up to save the city and says "I love you", he could've at least made her happy by saying "Me too". Obviously that would automatically engage the two of them for future releases and Yoshida wouldn't have a reason to show her face ever again, so I understand why they left it out.
But though I understand it, it still bugs me to hell, lol. I'm a Shana supporter so I'd take her over the other one any day :P
What you're saying is pretty accurate. In fact, I don't think the first season of SnS had any major role apart from giving you an awesome series to watch and to introduce the characters and a bit of their backgrounds, along with the whole series overall. Most series that have a definite ending don't let the "bad guys" wander off without some serious ass-kicking or complete obliteration. Hecate and the others will definitely come back.
As for The Rainbow Wing, aka Shiro, I don't think he'll be coming back. He had already fulfilled his promise to the previous Einpatsu Shakugan no Uchite and I think he had it in his mind all along to let the next one destroy him for good. I could be wrong, obviously, but that's the type of guy he seems to me.
4) Alastor's destructive summoning and transformation seemed utterly pointless. I'm expecting Shana to need to cause destruction on a large scale in the second season.
Indeed, but again, I don't think that, as the story progresses and Yuji and Shana become closer, he'd ever let her try summoning Alastor again. Maybe for a "Last-boss" fight, but up until now we have seen no Tomogara being so powerful that she'd need to use the summon often.
To a certain point I see what you're saying, but I think that the reason Yuji is able to lift the Blutsauger is because Shana taught him how to manipulate the power of existence. In the last battle, Shana loses her power of existence and isn't able to use Naitono no Shana with ease, putting it away for the time being. It seems like Hougu and such can only be used by people who can control the power of existence. And yeah, Azur really becomes a useful asset when fighting alongside with Shana. That way she could unleash her power without worrying about him.
And about her strength increasing, I think that's to do with the fact that she likes him and that his presence in there gives her a 'bigger' reason to fight. Obviously her power increases when she borrows his power of existence, but that would be true to anyone with power of existence itself, human or torch. She uses his power because he has the Reiji Maigo and she doesn't need to worry about decreasing his power of existence since it gets replenished every night.
And oh well, I could do this all day :D
Still, I wonder if Season two will finally "finish off" the SnS world. There's speculation that XV (XVI? correct me if I'm wrong ) will be the last novel in the series, and, coincidently, we're having a second season of the anime right after the novel is released. My first guess is that the anime won't cover it until the end and will add a different, alternative ending to the series. However, all we can do is pray they will patch things in a manner that is acceptable.
Otherwise, I'll be going Hinamizawa-style in someone's anime studio.

I have read somewhere in this forum that the anime missed a minor detail from the light novel. I forgot what it was but IF I do remember correctly, it was something about one of the incest siblings' arm got cut off and Yuji absorbed it. Again, I don't really remember what it was.

I watched the whole thing from 1 - 24 in one run months ago during winter midnight, coming to school half-asleep, anticipating for the movies and wondering if season 2 is gonna come.
Well I know that I normally feel like crap whenever I rush through a series, so I wanted to avoid it by doing 8 episodes at a time. But then I got to episode 16 and the whole Festival thing and I was like "Dude, I can't wait one more day to find out if I should slay Yuji or not", so it went down automatically... :heh:
And well, one thing that occurred to me and which brought me to really believe that Yuji is a special case ( not only for the Reiji Maigo ) is the fact that he has superb sensing skills. On the Siblings arc, where they use a certain marked torche as a "spawn point" for their unrestricted spell, Yuji is able to differ normal torches from marked ones and Margery even finds that an amazing feit. And since I'm willing to bet money on the fact that the Author of SnS isn't a half-assed lazy bum, I bet those skills have a bigger meaning behind the scenes, one which we'll only find out in the second season - or perhaps not even in there.
But well, one thing I know for certain: I don't want the studio that will be doing SnS II to do it half assedly. I wouldn't mind waiting for another six months for them to get it right, but for GOD'S SAKES, don't let the series be over hanging around without a definite, acceptable ending. Although I have high hopes that they won't do it, I'd hate for it to end like way too many series in which they will leave you wondering for years: "Will there be another season to patch things up? Or are we left to wonder what happened?" while they count their profits. I don't know about you guys, but I think there're Proft-making anime and there're Honor-duty anime, and SnS definitely falls into the latter category.
And ffs... It's a widely beloved series already and I think they'd be much better off pleasing the fans than maximizing profits. Of course, OVAs and 12+ Shana-tan episodes wouldn't be half bad, along with DVD-Only specials and all that stuff... I'll be buying it all anyway :P

If you've seen the entire series, look for Shana-tan on Youtube. They have all three episodes. Like Contempt said, it's basically a funny variation of the anime, in which Shana - and in Episode 3, Hecate - is really small and instead of her beloved "Urusai! Urusai! Urusai!~" moments, they've become "Uruchai! Uruchai! Uruchai!~" ones. I really recommend it, it's funny as hell - but sometimes somewhat disturbing, lol.

Why Urusai become Uruchai? Is it because they are in chibi form?
Yes, being chibified seems to have affected Shana's speech patterns.
I think Yoshida-san steals the show in the omake segments, though.
If you've seen the entire series, look for Shana-tan on Youtube. They have all three episodes.Technically, there are four "Shana-tan" extras, but only two of them have Shana-tan in their title. The episode was included on the Shakugan no Shana Movie SP, which was the promotional DVD for the movie. It also included a hidden video announcement of Shana's second season.

Ah, yeah. Sorry, seems like I didn't mention the third one was Itadaki no Hecatetan, although I really didn't know the one in which Whilhelmina appears was also an omake - to me it was more like a number of promos/comercials put together.
Still, I'm always amazed at how these guys pull those off... I mean, WHO would've thought about sending Alastor in an 'round the universe trip? That was freaking hilarious... "I Will protect the balance of the Wooooorld!!!... Yeah as if..." * Dives into darkness *
What Devard's Scan? And pleeease, don't compare our cute Shana with Kagome (I hate her )
The grinning face looks like the girl of the left, I mean, Meia, from the SnS Game, I'm kinda surprise to see her in the second season, in the other hand I kinda knew that the game took place after the anime, so...
And yes, if Shana slices Yoshida, I bring the drinks to your party
Ah, sorry sorry, I didn't mean to actually compare Shana-chan to Kagome - I freaking hate her as well ( I hate Inuyasha as whole though, but Kagome gets on my nerves more than everyone else. ). So that's the reason why I brought it up - I think she looks like her, and that's the reason why I didn't like that picture.
And oh, sorry - I didn't know about that character... but we can all still hope that it is, indeed, Yoshida Kazumi, right? Just another reason for Shana to slice and dice :D
It sucks that we know it wont happen... :deception:.

But well, one thing I know for certain: I don't want the studio that will be doing SnS II to do it half assedly. I wouldn't mind waiting for another six months for them to get it right, but for GOD'S SAKES, don't let the series be over hanging around without a definite, acceptable ending.
I originally figured that the second season will probably conclude with the "real" ending that the light novel will end with, but since they are bringing in Mea into the mix, I'm not sure how we're going to be doing in terms of episode counts.

Unfortunately I don't know anything about the game - maybe I should do some research. It's a pity I still can't read Japanese, things would be much easier for me then. But until then, I'll probably have to rely on reviews and plot summaries.
Personally I think another 24-26 episodes would be perfect, although 50 wouldn't be all that bad either. The problem with more episodes is that they might add in stuff they shouldn't have, just to maybe "fill-in" some spaces - even if the work is done right, it'll still feel a little out of place. So I'll stick with 24 good, concrete episodes than wishy-washy 50.
And also, I'm pretty sure it has been already discussed before many times, but would someone mind shedding some light on Shana's real age? I've seen people state that she's over 400 years old, something I find really hard to believe because of a number of factors ( mentioned previously in the topic - they had a little chat about this at around page five, I think, but anyway. ):
1) When Shana is training in the Tendoukyu and Whilhelmina goes down to get groceries, she goes into a very modern town - Her fight against that Guze no O inside a Shopping mall also backs this fact. There're doors that open automatically, modern cars and light-poles.
2) Uhm...Shana heats her pasta in a microwave?
3) Even if her aging process was stopped at the moment she entered the Tendoukyu and not at the moment she became a Flame Haze, and she has been, indeed, training for the past couple decades/centuries, wouldn't it be hard to believe that she would've never had connected a hit on Shiro?
I'm probably pretty sure that Shana has, indeed, been a Flame Haze for only a couple of years, maybe fifteen at the utmost. She is skilled in battle and seems to have a lot of experience by the time she meets Yuji, so I wouldn't risk saying something like five-to-six since that'd be a dangerous choice. And as Margery said, which has been confirmed in the boards before, she has been looking for "Silver" for a long while, decades/centuries - and she hasn't aged a bit. IIRC, it was Klashikari who pointed out that Khamsin is one of the oldest Flame Haze, so that settles things as to the overall aspect of the FH-Aging topic.
Which then makes me think... what were Whilhelmina and Merihim doing for so many years? Looking for a substitute, but all of them got rejected?
Uhm... maybe the Manga/Novel discussion would be better for the topic, since the answer to most of these questions should be found inside of them. But oh well, I have high hopes that these will be covered in the upcoming series.

Shana was 11 when she became Flame Haze, from that moment she sttoped aged... I believe she's really 15 years old, she's more mature because her way of living when she was human, I mean how she was trained, thw way that Wilhelmina and Alastor make her to look the world in the way that a Flame Haze would do

I agree, I'd prefer a twenty-some episode season II over a fifty-some episode one. Admittedly, it's highly unlikely that they'd go with the fifty-some route.
If you consider the fact that they went up to around the 8th and 9th novel for the first season and we assume that the novel will conclude on the 15th or 16th novel (I'm leaning towards the 16th or maybe even a 17th, I'm not counting 0 and S here, of course), from some simple math, you can see that it doesn't seem all that unlikely for them to cram the same amount of material into a twenty-some episode season II.
...And then some weeks later I realized my theory might not work out because I found out that they were going to bring Mea into the second season.
A season two of Shana!? ZOMG that's awesome! :D

Please correct me if I am wrong. By the time she met Yuji, she could only easily beat Rinne. I don't think she will stand a chance against any Tomogara like Friagne at that time. Look at her inexperience when she fought Margery for the first time. She just attacked blindly without much thinking. Only after she later defeated Friagne with major boost from Yuji, then her skills started to improve a lot. I do hope in the second season, she will become even stronger.

So...11? Then she really looks close to her age, after all. ( Shana definitely looks loli, even if her personality shows clearly otherwise. ) Which would explain a lot, really.

Yeah, I'd say the same thing. It's 90% unlikely that they would extend the series that much, so I think that, with the amount of info we have right now, 26 looks very plausible.
And I don't know what Mea's importance in the game is, so I really couldn't tell wether her appearance is a major fact or not - she could just play a small part in a "saga", instead of being a main/supporting character for the entire rest of the season.
Please correct me if I am wrong. By the time she met Yuji, she could only easily beat Rinne. I don't think she will stand a chance against any Tomogara like Friagne at that time. Well what you're saying makes sense - Margery also says it: "And I've heard you can't control the Flames at all". However, I would really doubt that Shana's past experiences involved only Rinne. After all, if there're Rinne at a place, then there's definitely a Tomogara lurking around. However it does seem that Shana's first "big" fight against a powerful oponent was the one against Friagne - He has, after all, killed a number of Flame Haze in the past and is considered very dangerous.
But I think that it's rather clear that, in her first fight against Margery, Shana was completely confused with her own feelings - which brought her to fight without using her head. Shana herself says so when she is at Yuji's yard, all beaten up. "It's your fault, it's all your fault", or something like that. Even against Friagne - she started the fight dismotivated and it was only after Yuji showed up to fight at her side that she managed to lay a few hits against him. Then, in the next battle against Margery, when Yuji was present there with her, she turned the tables around completely. So I think that it's not lack of experience or training, it was just not having the correct mindset to get into a battle.
And well, I hope she becomes stronger as well. Not only in her battle skills, but that her personality grows as well.
Ah, and if I may say so...

Yeah, your reason is way better than mine and I totally argee with you. Still, only after the fight with Margery, she can start to control her flame better and fly. All of this would not be possible before meeting with Yuji.

Yeah, I saw it before it was licensed, soo.... I haven't seen the DVDs.
But if they're on YouTube, that's nice. Gotta look those up.
I <3 anything chibi. :)
Hm, indeed that the first anime has covered till volume 9, but that doesn't mean it can't use materials from the earlier volumes can it? A lot of materials are left out...

Yeah, to tell the truth it felt a little awkward to see so many heavily sexual scenes when the series is really not in the mood for that. But again, in the last episodes, the amount of Shana-pantyshots were much above the norm, so I don't now if they were trying to get more audience or not :P
Are you trying to say that the entire season 2 is not enough to cover the novels up to 15th novel? Can we assume that season 3 is needed to finish up the story?
Well I'm not really going as far as saying that we can assume we'll have a third season when we still don't know a thing about the second. But take, for example, Rozen Maiden. While Season 1 followed a few bits and parts of the Manga, Season two took a completely different route from it, which still leaves a lot of the 'original' questions unanswered. I personally wouldn't like to see this happen to SnS, because more often than not, studios screw up with "last-minute" replacements for the story.
Two seasons are good, three may be pushing it too far. ( Besides, I will dare anyone in here to choose waiting for another three-four years to see the closing of the series and the very anticipated Yuji<->Shana kissu! )

Well personally I don't think that 26 episodes can cover 9 300-page+ novels completely, so when I learned that it covered up to the 9th, I knew there would be a lot of stuff missing. But I assume that the last volumes of the novel are more fast-paced, so it's easy to think that they would take a while to explain in the anime.
But whatever happens, happens. As long as it's a good season and Shana lives happily ever-after - even if everyone else die horrible deaths, I'm all for it.
By the way, give us some info on the novel! I'm really interested in it, but like I said on the Novel discussion, I'm really not willing to wait for another 7 years for all of the volumes to be translated into English. :\

As for the fanservice issue; I remember during the first season we had a few very heated debates on this topic, but surprisingly many dire fans, including me, have successfully persuaded some people into the rail of thought that fanservice shouldn't be a bad word. I like well-executed fanservice (and I don't just mean panty flashes) and Shakugan no Shana wouldn't be the same without it. In my eyes, Shana is the most perfect moe character to have ever existed, and her moeness was able to persuade people, despite all the sexual inneundo, that she's first and foremost cute.

Three seasons is too much. I would prefer that it just end with the second season and that it be that. Otherwise, an additional OVA or movie to do it would be cool with me, but three seasons is just overdoing it if you ask me.

Ideally, either Shana or Yuji should die, or both. It'd probably be more sad if only one died, but depending on its execution, having both died could work for me. I may be able to live with it if they're able to pull off a good, sad ending where they're both alive.

Oh, seems like I got a bit misunderstood again :heh: It sucks being an INTJ, I talk talk and still can't convey my thoughts correctly.
I didn't actually mean going and have people tell me what happens in the novel or go look for plot summaries. I actually meant that, instead of waiting for seven years to have all the novels translated into english, I'd rather study Japanese and read the originals. I've started doing it already, so I think that SnS will be a good motivation to finally get moving with it.
Edit: Oh, I just saw the "Give us some info on the novel". Sorry for that, just a wrong usage of words I guess.
And secondly, I don't think that fanservice is bad as well. Obviously, if you have tons of senseless scenes where the girl always shows up either naked or in the shower, changing or using the restroom ( Karin, anyone? ), it simply becomes a blatant attempt at getting the ratings up. I, too, think that the small amount of fanservice in the series was needed and well done - It's the not in-your-face, hope-you-get-a-boner-and-buy-ecchi-PVC-figures type of fanservice. Most of it is cute fanservice, especially when Shana makes her contract with Alastor. There, she's looking like the cutest, prettiest, most huggable mummy in history.
I only pointed out some of the last episodes' pantyshots because I think -some- of them could have been avoided. They were really quite a few, too, so I believe it was really an exception to the rest of the series.
@Devard:
Auuu. Although I agree with you that the more fitting ending to the series would involve Shana's death in some way, that's definitely not the road I'd like to see them take. I'd rather take an ending that doesn't answer every single question on the table, but in which Shana and Yuji get to be together. From the looks of things, I'd really think that Ike's completion of the love-square would create more opportunities for Shana to shine.
And, it's not like I'm threatening or anything but... if they don't get to be together, I'll go grab some of the guys I know from the Higurashi forums and we'll have a banquet on some Director's entrains. Just saying, just saying. * Whistles. *

I see your point. Please forgive me for being greedy. It is just that I grow so fond of this anime series that I hate to see it end. It will be going to be very boring without anymore new episode of Shakugan no Shana. (Imitating Hecate's words) Please give me more, more and more of Shakugan no Shana. Sorry, I went a bit crazy.
From what I understand, the current order of the story flow has already messed up, in which it doesn't necessary need to follow...
1) The chronological order of the novel. it can basically use the novel as a guide, and a guide only, forming a new story.
2) Totally derail from the novel. Happened to Crono Crusade and was rather badly executed. Well that was at least becuase Vol 7 and 8 of CC wasn't released during the production of the anime. Anyhow, this could jolly well happen to SnS considering the last few volumes has yet to be released.
3) Use material from the missing Vol 1-9 + filler + another "climatic" plot in one of the novel events, leaving a cliff hanger for season 3. With so much materials left out, its definitely able to fill up till a season 3.

Well, although I'd like to see the anime following the novel closely as well, I think that taking on a different path to get to the same ending is also acceptable, as long as it's done well. It gives fans a bit more material to keep their hands full for a while, too. If you take a look at Eureka SeveN, for example, the Anime and the Manga are really different from each-other, but I'm loving the manga as much as I loved the anime.

Haha, well as much as I'd love to see three seasons too ( the more Shana the better, with that you have to agree! ), I think that it may be pushing it too far. I'd rather have two well-done seasons that make you wanna go back and watch the whole series every few weeks than three seasons in which the second and third were done half-assedly. But hey, if they find enough material to keep the story flowing ( which I know they can since 15 novels is a lot of stuff, besides some of the stuff the author has in his head that didn't even get into any of the books ), then I'm all for it.
But, so far, the only series I've seen keeping strong until a third season was FMP! I don't know about Nanoha, Mai Hime and others, since I haven't watched any of those yet. But still.

I hope the producer will safeguard the best interest of this anime. Just like Zero Shinohara said, whatever happens will happens. I guess that we can be very happy with the arrival of 2nd season. They certainly have it all well planned up.
August: The release of Novel Vol. 15
September: The release of Shana movie in DVD
October: The broadcast of Season 2
That way, they can keep the interest up to the arrival of season 2. Boy, I can't wait any longer.

If the anime stays faithful to the novel, we will see Yuji becomes stronger.

Would expect Yuuji to become more useful in the future. After all the guy showed some ability at the end of the first season and they would want it to stay interesting and him helping would do that. Myself am interested in seeing this silver enemy of Margery Daw. Seems like one hell of a tough guy and someone who could be the center of something major in the story.

Well the poster before here already said that Yuji would become stronger, although i not sure if he has enough powers of existence to be helpful to shana while at the same time be strong himself.
also reguarding the silver enemy of Margery Daw, let's just say you'll be pleasantly surprised, but no spoilers for now..

Yeah, I agree. Being able to refresh his power of existence at midnight doesn't necessarily make him useful in combat. Yuji can only use his power of existence sparingly to ensure that he has enough to last till midnight. Looking back at season 1, every time his power of existence is refreshed, the flame was tiny and already flickering, indicating that he doesn't have a large capacity of power of existence.
Unless, by "becoming stronger", you mean that Yuji is actually increasing his capacity?

Yeah there is a limit to what Yuji can do. If he wants to serve as a battery for Shana then he'd have to hold back on doing anything himself that would use up that power of existence. Unless of course he could be useful in combat on his own even if it wasn't for a long period and Shana didn't necessarily need the boost.
At any rate I'm excited about this getting going. Didn't watch the first series as it was being released with some others. Just heard about it and saw it on a blog then went on the journey of tracking down episodes. So this should be a good one no matter how you slice it.
is there a picture of this new girl?

I recall seeing the green-haired lass 'involved' with Yuuji in one of those novels...Not sure what their story is, though. ;)
Both then. :o

My guess is that it has to do with Yuji's Reiji Maigo. Maybe I was wrong.

I thought I saw October 17th somewhere... I may be wrong, but it just seems familiar. Not too sure, but the only date mentioned in that scan was the movie DVD being released on September 21st. If I were to guess, I'd put it in the first week of October with all the other TBS shows, but we'll see...
I just finished a run of Season I, and now I can't wait for Season II... It's is living up to the hype. Now I'm probably going to read the novels as well.
I've always thought the name Shana has a Western source, but I was pleasantly surprised that it came from the name of the main Buddha of Shingon Buddhism, Vairocana. Shana was named after the Primordial Buddha of the Glorious Sun. That's just super cool. Guess I should not be surprised to see Sanskrit used as the rune in those Jizaihou.

Question... is it true that the animation looks a little different from the first season? in a board I read that some fans were really upset about it

Was probably just some kids trying to talk big. The animation company will remain J.C.STAFF and I have little doubt their budget and methodology will change in any drastic way. Besides, it's not like the animation was anything big in the first season anyway.

Pardon my ignorance, what is Comiket?
I am satisfied by viewing it on Youtube. But, is there a way to download the trailler? I mean that it is not like the one viewed on the television as seen in the Youtube. Viewing it on Youtube is good enough, but it is not providing the ultimate satisfaction. Anyway, many thanks!

Anyway, many thanks!Comiket (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comiket) is basically Japan's largest anime/manga fan convention. The videos we're seeing now are being shown first "on the show floor", which is why you're seeing cam-shot videos of TV screens. Eventually a lot of that will be available through some other means (DVDs, TV promos, web previews, etc.), but for now what you see is what you get, pretty much.

It may mean nothing, but I don't think I saw Yoshida in what I think was the section of the promo devoted to the new season. I just discovered the series, which I found to be surprisingly good in terms of character development and the like, but I wonder how hard they're going to push the love triangle thing in the second season. Things were left deliberately unresolved, really, but it's hard to see how Yoshida has much of a chance in "Round 2."
If the triangle is a major plot point in the new season, I just hope the writers don't try to force the issue of the sake of acquiring material. One of the reasons I liked the first season was that the triangle seemed genuine and interesting--Yoshida acquired an impressive amount of spunk and spine, leading to that priceless confrontation with Shana, where I thought she really got the best of the usually unflappable Flame Hazen; Shana's emotional ineptitude was plausible in light of her background and situation, but in the end, wasn't crippling; and Yuji's own confusion was also understandable (to me at least), without making it seem that he was either just a blockhead, or hopelessly indecisive.
I don't watch that much anime, but I get the feeling male anime leads tend to be hopelessly dense in terms of reading emotions--one of the refreshing parts of Yuji's character for me was he seemed much less dense than the norm, and even his misreading of Shana wasn't completely off-base, considering how badly Shana tended to handle her emotions. Making him string along both girls in the second season would seem callous on his part, which strikes me as badly out of character for him; and making him still completely oblivious to Shana's feelings after the end of the first season would also have the same problem--it wouldn't fit in with the character we've seen.
Oh, there's still good mileage to be had, I think, since Shana herself doesn't really know what she "wants" from Yuji, I don't think Yuji really knows what he wants to do with his life (along with the fact that he genuinely cares about Yoshida, who will probably be helped by Shana's ineptitude in these sorts of things), and now Ike's in the mix, but really, I just hope they don't overdo it.
I wonder how all this was dealt with in the novels, although it's my impression the anime diverged a fair bit at the end of the first season.

anyone have the exact date when Shana II will air?Somewhere on October. Other than that, the exact day is unknown.
whenever it does come out it's going to be great. And October is going to to (I believe) one of the greatest months this year for new series coming out.

My thoughts exactly. This fall season will be EPIC. I just found out that Genshiken 2 is coming out, and we still have Haruhi, Gundam, SnS and a handful of other very awaited-for series. Downside is that Lucky Star, Nanoha and other good shows will eventually end, but that's a reality we can't escape.
I just finished a run of Season I, and now I can't wait for Season II... It's is living up to the hype. Now I'm probably going to read the novels as well.

Welcome to the sensation :D
As far as her name goes, yeap, you're right on the spot. Unfortunately, though, in my language ( portuguese ) "Shana" has the same pronunciation as a pretty foul and nasty word - the reason why I'm probably not naming my dog that anytime soon( All my dogs have names that start with "S", and I wanted to keep this tradition :heh: ) - my mom and grandmother would probably snap if I said that out loud.
On a second note... Is anyone a bit bothered with the character design in that preview? I've probably brought this up before, but all we had at the time were scans, so having a set opinion would be difficult. All in all, I think the new lineart they chose is too "Laid-back" in my opinion. How I would define that, I don't know, it's just the feeling I get. However, I do feel like the first season's art was much more appealing.
[ You do need to realize that I have to complain about something when all I'm doing in life is wait for this series to come out, right? ]

That's because the anime wasn't close to being finished in the original series.
They'll probably appear again in the second series.
There's a pretty comprehensive list of fall anime here, along with the channels they air on and links to their websites:

No Haruhi this fall since Kyoani's going to be airing Clannad instead...still, overall I'm optimistic this fall is going to be really good. No air date for Shana II yet, but I'm hoping it'll be early in October rather than later in the month, just to minimize the wait :heh:

Yes. he deserved to be respected since he is one of the most experienced flame haze. But, I am a bit disappointed that in final few episode in the anime, when Shana, Wilhelmina and Marjorie were in the fight in Seirei-den, he sat out of the fight. We know he is a tuner, but can't at least he lend a helping hand?
