If ep 25 is SOMEHOW better than 24, then go ahead and write my a$$ in the DeathNote right now :p ...That preview gave me nothing really to chew on and I stay away from the DeathNote forum like bats from a halogen flashlight for the most part not to be spoiled by inconsiderate pions...I have no reason to feel or believe L will be killed despite that being Light's next goal...I honestly believe L will find a way to do some type of circumvention, the first crumb that he gave me last episode was that he perhaps is going to try and apply the fake DN rules to the events that happened earlier in the series to see if a discrepency exists...I'm also curious to see if Rem will finally betray Light in some way seeing that Ryruk is now Misa's Shinigami aswell...
They nailed this episode perfectly --- with a nice lil' style added also. Of course this episode is an emotional journey from start to end...
I really don't wanna talk about it at the moment. ;__;

Oh boy! Go ahead. Take your time. Shed those manly tears.
As for me, my anime basket is so full with all the new series coming out this month, it might be a while before I can lay a watch on this episode. :upset:

I order you to watch this episode at least tonight if you can, push it right to the top of your list.
BEST EPISODE EVAR.
Actually that's a bit of a lie, since I haven't seen it yet (not that I'm not burning to, of course). But the screencaps sure make it look as if it'll live up to expectations, and the reaction in the 2chan thread was definitely wild enough to make me anticipate it.

Oh it definitely lived up to expectations, and then some. I would say that this is the best episode of Death Note so far, especially if you've read the manga.

At the moment i'd say its the best episode so far, though there are many episodes that could easily make a top 05.
Everything from the light effect, to the bells playing --- simply brilliant. They knew just how much this episode had to give, and they did the best job they could at delivering it. Still, its such a painful watch when you know whats going to happen in this episode.. so painful.
Holy wow, what a dark and depressing episode, completely different from the rest but it was still one awesome episode! I really really really hate Light even more now!
I have a feeling L or Rem had some plans to get Light after they're gone. Yes no? What WTF was with Misa being all weird and gloomy and stuff, pretty creepy! So, like now what? Series almost over or what? I'm guessing it can't end until Light gets his or something. Ligt is one cold hearted b****, look at what he did to poor Misa!
I can't believe that Light's actions forced Rem into oblivion ... at least Ryuk is still around and is not so easily killed off :)

Wow, they actually surprised me with this episode. Really really amazing work here. Also, the quality of the art in this episode was probably the best of the entire series so far, everything was extremely well drawn. The whole thing was perfect.
I was expecting them to take the over the top and ridiculously epic route they've been taking up til now, yet When it happened, it was silence, just bells ringing, yet the atmosphere was nailed incredibly well and the added red filter over the entire scene was perfect. Light's expression was perfectly transposed from the manga and really nothing needed to be added, just the look on his face was what made this scene. In fact the atmosphere throughout the entire episode was perfect. Definitely the highest point of the series.
I can't remember the last time I've seen an animated work surpass the manga source material as well as this series has.

Just watched it. Great episode. Must say episodes 24 and 25 are the best episodes of the series. They did add scenes that weren't in the manga, but they were done in a really lovely way. The animation was superb.
Interesting how they had L sense that he was going to die soon. The anime was hinting throughout the episode at his death so it was much less surprising then the original source material. Though I do wonder how it was for people who didn't already know what was going to happen.

man this ep floored me, being an anime only watcher. and havent read the Manga, i had only i little bit of an idea what was coming and they brought it on in the best damn way ive ever seen.
What did people think about the scene of the stairs, that had L drying Light's feet? First of that and the scene of the rooftop are completely new (not appearing in the manga), and they're two scenes which are used to build up the ending/climax of the episode. In the rooftop scene we get to see another side of L, one which feels that the end may be near for him --- also mention that he's been hearing the sound of bells (which works in perfect with the end scene). We then see what the friendship between him and Light means to him on the stairs --- i started to cry the second Light Lights up Light for piano started to play. Such a perfect BGM for that moment between the two --- it makes you think even more that if the Kira case wasen't happening, just how good of friends the two would be.
In my opinion, they're added to give the viewer more to think about --- just what was Light (who is Kira again) thinking about while this was happening. I get the feeling that the director wanted to show a more human Light, one that does feel sad for whats happening --- i think that even more by his shocked face, and how long it takes him to show that evil smile after L falls down.
Its add-in's like this that make me think anime > manga. & thats including the music, light effects and much much more that we've seen from the anime adaptation.
The foot-drying scene is also a Biblical reference. And fujoshi fanservice. It has many uses, heh.
So is Light now Jesus? At least now yaoi fans know who's the girl in this relationship now:D
Actually Jesus also washed the feet of one of his disciples at one point. (Garten goes into more depth in this over at his blog.) Given the circumstances in the episode, I think this scenario is what they were referring to, not Mary Magdalene.
Mad House does seem to be trying to get more sympathy points for L then the manga does. They make it seem more like L actually does feel like Light is a friend, while in the manga that is never the case. So the way they set it up in the anime makes Light's betrayal in the episode look even worse.
I too found it interesting how they made Light looked genuinely shocked and then very slowly had him switch to his trademark evil smirk.
Finally saw it for real, and of course it was fscking amazing.
I'm not sure I agree with the "L seeing Light as a friend" thing. More than a personal emotional connection between them, I think the anime played up their awareness of one another and the extent of each other's knowledge. For instance, even when they were behaving in a friendly manner in the anime-only rain scenes, it was clearer than ever that L knew what would happen, and Light knew or suspected that L knew, and this sense intensified throughout the episode until the climax.
But maybe that doesn't translate to sympathy points for me because I had already read the manga and gotten through my shock/distress over the events of this episode.
I had to follow my orders, so I watched it. And as Magus IX has surmised, it's F-word amazing. Madhouse is going to runout of money if they keep this up. And I'm only talking about the animation. The atmosphere was so tense, that I don't remember even breathing. Time really stopped. I'm pretty stingy with my ratings, but I believe this episode deserves the 10. It practically has no flaw from every aspect of overall animation. Shiroth gets a cookie for being a l33t Englishman whom are very hard to find in the world these days. ^^
Yeah, that's one area where the episode totally wins hands down. The animation was AMAZING. I only hope they're able to keep it up. I still feel L is sort of OOC with the addition of these new scenes, but that's ok. I can always pick up the manga again if I want the manga atmosphere. I can appreciate this episode totally on its own. It's just beautiful.

I regret spoiling myself with a blog, but it was a great episode anyway. Well constructed, well animated, and smart. I still don't quite grasp where L was coming from, but it looked like he felt defeated -- by his friend Light. Poor sod. Christ washing the feet of his disciples was a good reference. And the homoerotic overtones were like a whole new layer of meaning. At this point, I don't have a clue where this show is going...which is a good thing.
Of course, I thought Hirano Aya's delivery of Misa's song was great. Along with the loligoth outfit and animation it made something approaching Ophelia's mad-song in Hamlet. I said I don't know where the show is going, but all I see is bad for Misa.
Shakespeare and the Bible in one episode? Decent.

Thank you. :3
Its not just the added scenes, episode 25 was a epic journey in which Madhouse did there best, and it paid off. I only hope they won't stop here, and carry on doing this awesome job --- even in the second arc.

Death Note - fantastic, awesome, superb direction on a crappy and stupid plot.
The plot is laughable, seriously. It was so stupid that I wanted to cry in an instant. But it was so well animated, the music was so well on-spot, that I forgot stupid and lame was (plot-wise) L's death and I let myself enjoy it. And the Bible reference was excellent (and of course it would be, because it wasn't inside the manga).
MADHOUSE ROCKS.
My mind is about to explode. This episode was amazing. I'm glad I haven't read the manga, I don't think I would be able to enjoy it as much as I am right now.

Where's the 20/10 option? :D This episode makes my top 5 anime episodes of all time for its sheer epicness. I cried too! Even the classics like AIR and Kanon managed to have me sobbing, maybe shed a tear or two, but this one actually had the water flowing for a good while. And with a mostly shounen series, too! (Not that I mind, but normally I prefer the shoujo ones by quite a long shot... :heh:)

This was by far the best frakking episode yet. In fact it was so good i cant see them doing anymore anywhere near this scale (though i avoid spoilers and the manga so i dont know what else is coming up)
Special note to the music, everything from Misa's sweet/sad little song to the huge epic scores were brilliant. I especially loved the piano piece played during the rather touching scene half way through.

A perfect eps. I was in a surreal world for 25 mins and a few hours after that.
I'm sorry if somebody already asked this but;
Can't they recognize Light's letters on the Death Note 1? Or did Light erase them all... Maybe he just cut the pages with his writings..? ???
btw my intension is not to throw mud on the eps. Sorry for this stupid question, but I need the answer for this to clear my head... Thanx

Definetly a 10/10!!!
This episode was great, even better then 24~!
I'm happy they added the extra scenes that didn't appear in the manga, like the balcony scene and the footsie-scene (yaoifangirlfapmaterial..including me XD). They also made L much 'cuter' and shy then normal,I guess they did all of that to make 'it' more emotional (so the fans would be like "NOOO DAMN YOU LIGHT HOW DARE YOU TO DO THAT TO MY SWEET AND CUDDLY L!!!111elevenone)
To be honest, this is the first time I think the anime is better then the manga..
MADHOUSE,I'm fcking proud at you for making this the best anime-episode I've ever seen,'cause everything was perfect in this episode, the music, animation, added scenes and the mood and just..everything!
Also,by adding those foot and balcony scene,I seem to find Light an even more of a fcking a$$hole then I already thought he was then when I read the manga..he realy is the worst or the worst
..it was realy sad to see L like that,he realy saw Light as a friend by how he was acting and stuff..(in the manga, you didn't realy get that feeling)
Hmm,well, can't wait for next episode, new characters are going to be introduced (but I guess everyone knew that because of the opening XD)
And L dying like that,seeing Light's smiling face is..just too sad >_<

Bit confused here but remember this is Rem's DN not Ryuk's so Light had no writing in it. Im pretty sure the pages would have been removed anyway otherwise Lights plan would have fallen apart when the note was passed on to Higuchi
Actually, it IS Light's original death note....he gave it to Rem. The one that was buried was Misa's. He had Ryuk attached to the buried note by doing that switching thing he did in the flashback of ep. 24. So that's his writing in it the DN L retrieved. And from the looks of episode 24 the writing is still there. So yes, you'd think they'd have an expert check the handwriting against Light's. Unless Light was smart enough to try to alter his handwriting. He might do that...but I find it hard to believe he would have done that the first couple of times he used it. Just because he didn't even really believe the thing would work, he was just goofing off because he was bored.

I don't think the pages Light wrote in are there... Someone would notice a huge "Lind L. Taylor", right?
True, he must have ripped the pages out. Otherwise he'd definitely get caught.
It was seriously the best episode ever but still i feel like there was a scene in the manga which should also been icluded in the anime, but sadly it wasnt :(
For the manga readers, L's last thought after he collapsed.
Still great episode, probably gonna watch it today a few more times ;)
L is my favorite character, so it's sad to see him gone..
I hope part 2 of DN without L has the same quality in terms of storyline.

I don’t think they were ripped off from the death Note, and seriously, who would blame Light even if the handwritings were exactly similar? The fake rule of the 13 days clears Light completely of suspicious, to that point, if you compared it to Light Hand Writing the most logical conclusion would be someone with handwriting similar to Light. and at this point doing a Hand writing check is similar to do a Fingerprint check, a needlesley effort.
He could also had ripped of the pages when he didn’t knew the DN worked, and then Change the Handwriting, but I doubt it.

This episode is the birth of the DN Yaoi fanfiction movement, I would put money on it.
Other than that, it was a god damned good episode. I knew something bad was coming by the way L was acting
putting this in spoilers just to be safe, but I hope the series continues well after L's death....I'm really kinda sad that L died, to. He was quickly becoming my favorite anime character of all time :(
This episode added a lot of stuff that wasn't in the manga, I'm quite surprised. Like the intimacy between L and Raito... lol.
And they should have stuck to the damn manga when doing the death scene of L... like how when he said "he knew Kira was Raito, and that he wasn't wrong, but...." then dies.

I also think so...
But, wouldn't L recognize the ripped pages before recognizing the little cuts from the papers..?
Wow the added filler in this episode really changed my mind about Light being right. In the manga I was almost cheering for Light to win, but now in the anime it's the opposite they make Light seem much more evil.

What were you expecting? Do you want Light and Misa to give up their life of crime, move to another country, and abruptly end the story there? Perhaps you're not quite asking for the right vibes from Death Note. It's always been a series about Light trying to become, essentially, a God, and those who dared to stand in his way.
It's not like the plot suddenly took a big U-turn and came out with something none of us were (eventually) expecting; this has been coming for a long while, and if you didn't quite get the hint from the past 24 episodes, I'm afraid you haven't been paying enough attention.

Yeah, the new scenes definitely make Light look way more evil. And like I said, they make L look way more sympathetic.
In the manga I was cheering at this point (hey, I'm a Light fan...of course I'd be happy for his big win). But when watching this episode I actually felt bad for L. It was more sad the way it was portrayed in the anime. In the manga everything was very sudden. L didn't have a clue as to what was about to happen, while in the anime they had him sense his imminent demise. The gentle and friendly interaction between the two makes Light look like even more like a bastard for betraying and killing his "friend." But in the manga, L is never friends with Light. The whole friend thing was a lie on his part to throw Light off. Neither of them ever thought of the other as a friend.
Of course none of this changes my mind about Light. Still feel the same way. :)
I've been thinking about this for a while.
Why didn't Rem kill Light off as well? His death shouldn't have affected Misa's life span anyway. I mean, it's clear Rem doesn't like Light at all , so she could firstly write his name in Death Note, then Watari's , then L. If a shinigami can love a human , it should also be able to feel the urge for revenge.
Yes but then Misa would loose her reason to live. She loves Light so much she would probably commit a suicide and Rem wouldnt want that to happen

I almost don't want to believe what happened to L. He deserved so much more. The truly sad part is he thought he had finally found the one thing he was looking for his whole life, a friend. Lets start a petition to get him cameos in every major anime that is made in the future!
It's weird for a long time I've been rooting for Light, hoping that he would win the battle between L and himself and now...
that he killed L I was kinda of sad, and at the same time in denial. Right now even after reading through everyones spoilers and rewatching the episode it's really hard to believe that he's gone. I want to think that it's staged and L has one more big trick up his sleeve but after watching Rem crumble to dust and coming in this thread it seems doubtful.

Story looks as presented from Kira's point of view: crazy coloring, like outlook from an insane mind. And this is the way he sees everyone - heartless doll Misa to serve his goals, L who won't say his last words. And it was like that from the beggining - how will it look like in the end?
I'm thankful to Madhouse for adding new scenes. That's just something that was missing to me. Water dripping from L's hair looked like tears, though I don't know from where he all of a sudden got an idea something bad was going to happen to him. Anyway, he's not going to appear again, so some extra cuteness is good...
For those who were wondering why L wanted to wipe Light's feet - most probably it was his way to apologize for getting Light soaked in the rain. The translation probably skipped it.
Now he quitted the madness. Sayonara:(

Ofc i cant add more to what other said about this ep. it was just perfect. Not because the amazing twists or the rapid action that make this anime special, it was the mood. this is an ep that was meant to be watched alone at night.
One thing that hasn't been discussed here but I Really cant get of my mind is the thing L said to light when they were in the roof:
"Since you were born, have you ever told the truth even once?"
Dunno why, but i fell that this sentence, said to light, have... something i cant quite figure out...

I think L was implying that Light never told the truth since he was born, which I don't know if it's true. He did say he and Light were similiar.

Did anyone think the episode almost turned into a yaoi for a second? o_O I mean when L said "I was going to give you a back massage. I am really good at it." while drying Light's feel was a little creepy. But brilliant episode though. I can't wait to see how Madhouse handles the second arc.
Ah , right. That makes sense :).
But still ...
I doubt Misa would suicided or anything if Light died. And looking in the long run, without Rem being around to keep Light in line, he's just going to use and discard Misa. She really should have taken him out as well.

Definitely the best episode in the series.
I now officially hate Light. How can he be so cold to someone who he could probably be best friends with in another situation? He's truly beyond redemption.
Am I the only one finding it hard to understand why Rem didn't kill Light? He's obviously going to kill Misa, the person she died to save, when she becomes too much of a problem now Rem is out of the picture.
Apart from Light living and the yaoi scene, this episode was as close to perfection as an anime episode could be. The only downside is that we won't be seeing the best character in the series ever again beyond this point. ;_;
Speaking of L, this episode made me want to know more about L's past. It would've been brilliant if the manga author had spent some time explaining how L became L before he took an early leave from the series. He has to be the only character I like who I know nearly nothing about.
The direction of the story beyond this point seems obvious to me - Light is going to become the next L, creating suspects as he carries on being Kira. He'll probably run into some people who are on to him, none of which will be able to compare to L.
I can only see the series being boring now. What can they do to make the story as interesting as before without L around? Light without L doesn't seem right.

Did anyone think the episode almost turned into a yaoi for a second? o_O I mean when L said "I was going to give you a back massage. I am really good at it." while drying Light's feel was a little creepy. But brilliant episode though. I can't wait to see how Madhouse handles the second arc.
Well the way i saw it was because at the same time L wanted for Light to be Kira, He didnt want for him to be Kira eaither. He was sad because of that and thats why he was being all nice to him.
You saw the Chips scene right?. If L proves that the 13 day rule is false , he can easily prove that Kira is Light. He can 100 percent be sure of that fact.
At the same time L's only friend and his first friend was Light. He was sad because he didnt want to have to lose his only friend but he had to in order to finish the Kira case. So that is why he was so nice to Light. At least thats how i saw it.
Also it was so sad to see L die. Still I dont count kira as the winner against L. Kira had way too many advantages against L. He had basically two death note and Rem. Now that light has used his ultimate trump card ( Rem ) he will probably have a harder time if new challenges apear.
True, he must have ripped the pages out. Otherwise he'd definitely get caught.
Somehow I had the impression that Light switched the covers of Ryuku's (with the 'how to use') deathnotes and Rem's deathnotes. So the one that Higuchi was using was made of Ryuku note's cover and Rem note's pages......
anyway, don't take my words...
Alright, I just need a bit of clarification.
In the toweling scene, one of L's lines was translated as, "You'll understand soon." Can someone confirm if that is correct or not? I thought he was saying, "We'll soon be parting."

I think the latter is right..
In Japanese, understand (wakaru) and separate (wakare) do sound alike...
btw, many people refer the foot-massage scene to 'John-chapter 13' of the new testament.

Absolutely beautiful piece of animation. Parts of it didnt even really feel like the DN ive come to know (The opening parts and Misa's walk specifically) but at the same time they lended the episode a special kindof feel.
The roof and stairs scene really amazed me and since im a anime only watcher im pretty delighted to know madhouse added those bits themselves. Yes they did have abit of a yaoi feel to them, but damn if they weren't cute and gave abit more depth to L for me. ;)
Overall just a stunning episode...absolutely. Easy 10 heh.
That episode was epic.

The fact that Light had "de-evidenced" the notebooks before giving them up and why Rem couldn't kill Light as well are both explained in the manga. Remember that the anime leaves a ton of stuff out. I was sad they took out Rem's final words about Light having surpassed even a Shinigami was taken out. But still a great episode!

We all saw it happen in the manga, but the added scenes in the anime really twisted the knife.

I voted 7 for this episode. IMO, it's seems too fast-paced. And when I was watching it, it doesn't give me the "what's-going-to-happen-next" feeling which the previous 2 episodes gave.

In the movie, it was. ;)

Hi everyone. First post here.
I'm a big death note fan. I was wondering about something so I decided to register here so I could post. At 4 o'clock in the morning!
I was very disapointed to see L die considering that he always had the odds against him. The one thing I want to know is this. I don't want L's death to be in complete vain. Someone can PM me the answer to this if they know the answer. I can't wait to see the next episodes. A simple yes or no will suffice
Did L do anything or preplan anything before his death that will hinder Light in the future? I don't want Light to get the complete last laugh. Did he set any kind of mind trap or roadblocks for Light? Kind of as a final "I got you Light" last laugh kind of thing. I don't mean a replacement but something that Light just does not see coming.

yea... the scene was a little to gay for my tastes, even though i know it was looked at as a reference to a exerpt in the bible...
still though i gave the episode a 10/10.... very nice... Light is da man, as i said before, i'd follow him to hell and back....
if as u say,(the manga readers that is) the anime made him out to be more evil than the manga, than i'm thankful.... Evil is the new black...
I really loved that look on his face as he was holding L in his death... and the acting afterwards, was OMG... oscar winning perfomance IMO heh..
Huzzahs all around for Light!!! the new GOD of the world....
though i am wondering how good the anime is gonna be now that L is gone... he was the only character that was even close to being on par with Light genius wise... but i'll keep my hopes up... and props to REM, she will be missed... n e ways Ryuk is still there... so it can't be all bad..

I have to see the episode myself to be impressed by how Madhouse did a better portrayal of this crucial scene in the plot than the manga.
An excellent farewell indeed for L. The big challenge for Madhouse would be to try and keep the vibe of the series at least as intriguing as before for the remaining 12 episodes without L in Light's way, as manga readers can attest to that.

Man, that was one of the best episodes yet. Easily the most powerful, and the most-well done, direction wise.
I knew that Light would kill L sooner or later, and the foreshadowing was thick this episode. Still, it was powerfully done, brilliant stuff.
Now I know everyone is saying how much the hate Light, but for some reason I'm always behind him. He does evil things, he's killed countless people, but I never want him to get caught.
It's weird, I often can't get behind a character I find despicable, like in A ClockWork Orange for example. But Light, while doing things that I can't condone... well, you just want the guy to succeed.
He's a pretty well done version of the devil. Evil, but he really charms you into getting behind him.
Holy sht. I simply loved Light's grin at the end. I truly enjoyed how he
enjoys killing someone who actually wanted to trust him
I never knew I was as evil as light deep down inside. For the sake of world, pray hard I dont get a deathnote.
I've always loved Light's character, but its at this point in the manga where i can't like him and his ways --- even more so after the few extra scenes that Madhouse added to this part of the story.

I wouldn't personally say that Light was dislikable at this point...but I thought that it was this point that Light started to become boring. It's like the whole "memory-lost" alternate Light's complexity versus his "evil" mindset development was completely thrown out of the bin. I know a major theme of DN is that absolute power corrupts, but damn...he's got not a second of remorse or 2nd thoughts.
Wow, I can't recall the last time I posted in the DN thread. It's been like...forever, despite following it.
Well, only comments for the last 20 or so episodes is much kudos to the amazing directing, be it pace-wise, atmosphere-wise or even visual-wise. In terms of manga adaption that is both faithful to the spirit and story, probably only Madhouse and Sunrise are really at the top of their game.
One thing that hasn't been discussed here but I Really cant get of my mind is the thing L said to light when they were in the roof:
"Since you were born, have you ever told the truth even once?"
Dunno why, but i fell that this sentence, said to light, have... something i cant quite figure out...
If you watch how the anime captures this scene, you can see he is obviously saying "I know you are Kira".
To me it was quite obvious. The bells that L was referring to hearing were his death drawing near. He said, "sounds like a wedding... or maybe a...". Then Raito interrupts saying "don't talk like that". L was obviously going to say funeral next. L said "the conditions are favorable today, so you can't help but hear them(the bells)." The conditions L is talking about are his decision to go forward with the only option left. That option was to test the death note. He knew the probability of Raito being Kira was so high that this would likely spell his death. That 13 days rule was the only thing that stopped Raito from from being guaranteed to be Kira. As intelligent as L was, it would be unreasonable not to assume he knew what was going to happen. L wins though because this strongly indicates Raito as Kira. As soon as the only thing guarding his innocence was brought to be tested, both Watari and L died. That's beyond suspicious and if L is as brilliant as he's behaved, he has some people lined up to react to these anticipated circumstances. But I haven't read the manga so this is speculation. Honestly though, if you've been able to follow this story so far, it only makes sense. And in regards to the foot washing scene, it isn't uncommon in Asian culture to show a profound respect for a worthy adversary. These two could not help but care for each other in these regards.
These two were so equal that whoever had the death note would have likely won. Though, I might even go further to say, that the probability that they'd both lose is more likely. Don't count L's death as a win for Raito.
I wouldn't personally say that Light was dislikable at this point...but I thought that it was this point that Light started to become boring.
We need to see more out of Light then this 'I am God' phase --- at least some kind of emotion to do with the lose of L, especially after the rooftop/stairs scenes that were added. But no, i can't forget that Light is one evil piece of material, and all he cares about is becoming the new God. So yeah, a bit boring.
This episode was amazing. The way the black out happened, rem's red eye effect, thunder, data deletion ( i thought this data deletion thing, even though in a way irrelevant, was amazingly useful in showing the sense of urgency ).

I just freaking had to register in this site just to make a post about this episode. I really need to discuss it.
First Point of View: Manga L VS Anime L
In this episode it comes as evident that we come to a clashing against two sides of L: The anime one and the manga one.
Honestly, I prefer the Anime L in this episode. Although being somewhat mistaken as having given up on his fight, I think of it another way. These whole extra scenes finally show a more human side to L and not just some super detective that the Manga presents. Even when Light and L talk in the rain and the stairs you see no mind and word games like you saw for the last 24 episodes, just some a bashing comment. Instead, with the Death of Higuchi, the appearance of Rem and the sudden killing comeback, L senses that everything is starting to crumble around him. And unlike Light, when Misa was captured, almost resigned to L, he didn't do the impossible to win. Because honestly, even the possible was not enough.
He said it himself before: "If this is just God's play, then all of this fight has been meaningless." And wasn't it Rem's play, a Death God's play in the end? Sure Light played that God as a marionette to his advantage but Light was fighting against something beyond the mortal world. We all knew he was against the odds. He just came to realize that when he saw Rem. All he could do now was keep fighting in hopes of a miracle. But all of us, even him knew that miracles don't happen for the good guys in Death Note.
So instead of that Bleach, Naruto and most action animes where the hero goes all "I can't die now" and ends up having a miracle to survive, L just decides to accept that sooner or later he could be very well dead. The bells ringing was brilliant to me. The whole Reaper's expression of "For whom the bells toll? It tolls for thee." was so well applied in this episode.
Along with the analogy with L/Jesus and Light/Judas and the foot cleaning scene. He knew. He wanted Light to know that he knew. Doesn't mean he was mad or wanted revenge. He was just sad that he failed.
And mostly, he was sad that after getting a friendship, he'd end up being betrayed. He was distant from relationships for most of his life like he said, and the one time he let himself have one, it ended in his death.
Second Point: Light's behavior during this whole episode
Light here oscillated so many times between Light personality and Kira personality. We all know now that the Death Note created a "Jekyll and Hyde" demeanor in him. At the beginning of the episode, we got a lot of Hyde. During the rain scene as L confessed, we got Jekyll slowly showing up again since Light regained the Death Note. At the foot scene, it was mostly Jekyll than Hyde and for a minute it seemed as Light was also a bit sad for what he was doing. Both could feel that if L and Kyra didn't exist, Ryuzaaki and Light could be friends.
And then the dreaded moment of all. Take notice at Light's face the first seconds when L starts to fall. It wasn't a grin, nor a laugh nor even something similar to happiness. It was pure dreaded shock. The same way he felt when Rem said he could easily kill him several episodes ago. A traumatizing fear coming from the loss of your rival...and of your friend. Even as he holds him in his arms he maintains that state of shock, until slowly, very slowly, like poison crawling into your body you see the full grin and eyes of Kira. You know at this moment that Light had truly died. From now on only Kira would pass judgment on the world.
Unfortunately, as great as this episode is, it is also the high point of the entire anime for me unless some drastic change is made. Because honestly, without hoping not to spoil anything, nobody becomes likable in this series for me and it ends in the most idiotic fashion I saw, for a series of this intellectual caliber.

Well to one he doesn't because that one is still in surveillance under the rest of the team. So for Misa's and Rem's, yes, he has full access to them.

Hey,the song Misa sings, does someone know the name of it or anything? It isn't on the Death Note OST II ._.
Incredible episode. I mean, wow. I've watched it a few minutes a go and I still have the chills....
If the next arc is even half as good as this ep, I'd be in heaven.
The next arc isnt as good as this ep since this ep is mainly the second part to explain Light's plan. The next arc will feature a few nec chars and the end of Death Note. It's still good but the action in between is not as exciting as the end.
For my vote, i voted 9 since i don't feel like giving 10's out so easily, the only anime series that have earned 10 points in my opinion are Kanon, NGE and Death Note, although most DN eps i have rated 9.
The situation i liked the most was Light's smile when L died.
Don't get me wrong, my fav char is L but Light's expression was simply breathtaking.
If ever an episode of Death Note was scary... this certainly was it. Especially the part with Misa's song... brrrr. And L, standing in the rain... even the oddly doujinshi-ish scene in the middle was great.

Well everyone has covered this episode so well that there is not much to say. It was great it sad it was F UP. Of course i gave it a 10 i had to there was no other option.
What made this episode especially sad for me was of course the death of L, but it goes far beyond that to me. The complicated relationship between L and Light goes so much deeper than good vs evil. They are basically the different sides on the same coin. The sad thing is i think Light will realize that even though he thinks hes a god and he has won the battle with L he will come to know that he really did like L as a friend. There is no one else who Light can communicate with like he did L who can talk to him on his level? no one i can think off. Rem for all that he carried for Misa was stupid to kill L she has already made the eye contract twice shortening her life even more, Im pretty sure she might have only 5 years left to live and thats assuming that Light does not kill her. Which he might because she is a loose end. Rem should have realized this and killed Light and tried to Misa to forget everything again.
Im very interested in where the story is going to go from here. Light thinks he has won but one of Lights weaknesses which he never tends to learn is that over confidence breeds carelessness. Im sure there is something that he has over looked and a new challenger will step forward to confront him. Also, we dont know that L didnt leave some insurance behind just encase he was killed. L as fanatically smart and cautious im sure he would had a contingency plan just encase he was killed.
I had always given Light the benefit of the doubt but now i see no redemption for him to me hes just evil. I respect his intelligence but his worth as a human being if he can still be called that has be shattered.
Hey,the song Misa sings, does someone know the name of it or anything? It isn't on the Death Note OST II ._.
Nothing has been said yet about the title, though if there's a third OST (which a few of us have already talked about happening), then it should appear on there.
L seems the kind to have a contract with ahitman in case of his death. Maybe the delete button also sends information to another organization that deals with things a little more illegal that L. Maybe L's last move or something is to contact a hitman or such. Now that would add a new layer of suspense.
Hello that is my first post here !
I don't really understand why Rem has to die. I know that she kills W and L in order to save Misa, somehow, but Misa in not in direct danger from them, so why is this rule applying rather the usual rule "increase shinigami's lifespan by killing humans"?

If L was to carry out his plan, then the 13 day rule would appear to be a fake, meaning that all fingers would be pointed at Light & Misa. Rem killed L, so this plan couldn't work --- meaning that Rem saved Misa's life.

I don't think Rem is "Really" dead for what was stated earlier, there could be another technicality. Remember, Misa could have gotten life in prison as opposed to the death penalty; Rem couldn't know. That was interestingly clever of him; since when was Kira going to get any less than the death penalty? That slipped in at the last minute, but it seems to me that technicality should save Rem.
It also seems to me L could be faking his death. I mean, isn't that the best way to get out of it?
Also, I have another theory with L. What if he doesn't HAVE a real name? That scene with him talking to Light in the rain would make a lot more sense.
I feel sorry, as always, for Misa. I'm guessing she'll be Light's foil, though I get the feeling L and Rem might not be dead at all as I said.

Again, what if L didn't have a real name, and the name above his head randomly floated between any number of aliases? He already seemed to be able to predict his death, so I don't see how farfetched it is that he might have an idea of around when he might die. Remember, he fell AFTER Watari did.

The predicting his own death was something the anime added for dramatic effect. An alias would not show up to the shinigami eyes. They can see only a person's true name. You can't trick a shinigami with an alias. Like the above poster mentioned, Rem would have noticed if there was no name at all and only numbers floating over his head. But that's not the case, she clearly wrote a name down and that would be his true name.

Well, this episode was clearly the best of the series - which has been a little inconsistent, IMO - and one of the better I've seen, period. I'm stunned to hear the rooftop scene and the foot-drying scene weren't in the manga, as I think they were bother utterly brilliant and among the best in the episode.
The only downer, of course, is that L is dead (I think). L is without question this myhtos' greatest contribution - an incredibly memorable and unique character and, frankly, I have a hard time imagining I'll like the anime nearly as much if he isn't going to be in it. If anything, the fervent hope that Light gets what's coming to him will keep me watching...
I don't know what to make of this. It's not like I had an emotional connection to any characters, but the highlight of this series, to me, was always the mind games between L and Light. With L being dead, that eliminates that altogether, just when I had been thinking that aspect of the show might return...

Yeah.
TBH it was a good episode but it's implications for the rest of the series are bad. 11 episodes without L? Come on.
L was the character that really made the show. At first Death Note was "Intriguing" but it wasn't "amazing" until we had L.
Sucks he had to die. I guess that's what happened in the manga, so it has to happen in the anime. I think when they make animes of stuff though, they should revise things like this. I don't think L dying this early on is integral to Death Note being Death Note. It would be much better if it didn't happen until towards the end if it had to at all.

Then in that case, Shiroth was merely giving away an anime spoiler, either. Which means you have no cause to be snarking on him.
I have a slight prediction
In the foot scene, you can see when L presses his towel against Lights foot there is some hesitation (and possibly a painful reaction) from Light. What I gathered from this the first time I watched it was that L pricked Light to get a sample of blood to match to the piece of the death note that Light wrote Higusidfd(can't remember the spelling)'s name on. Upon a deeper and more practical look, Light may be simply a little anxious of the situation, but that was just my first impression and consider it a possibility.
Regarding the future plans, as a non-manga reader, I am fairly certain Rem and L have worked out some sort of a plan to get Light. I believe Rem contacted L because Rem is now completely against Light after realizing his plan and toying with Misa's life in the process. It is also obvious that L ABSOLUTELY, 100% KNEW LIGHT WAS KIRA from this episode on (Making Rem contacting L alot more plausible). I think it will be along the lines of a note left by L that another investigator will find saying something like "If I am dead then we know Light is kira".
I have seen people getting flamed about the possibility of L faking his death. While this is highly unlikely, it still holds a small possibility to me, as we can't see exactly whose name is being written down in the death note. Although we can see a switch in scenes to Rem writing a name down after Watari's death, most assume that it is not a brief flashback moments ago, but it perhaps might have been. Rem could have written just Watari's name down, and died from that. This is all a very small possibility in my eyes of course.
Thank you come again.
BTW what do the kids have to do with anything at all? Are the scenes with the children flashbacks?

To go at Kittie's Rose doubt about L having no real name.
In the How to Read volume of Death note, it states the 66 rules on how using the Death Note.
One of them says that the shinigami eyes reveal the name that can be used to kill that person, even if that person was never given a name or have it registed.
So it makes me wonder how do people originally get their name? Does God give them? Is it different from the ones given by our parents?
OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG
Even though it happened.. I cannot believe it happened. While his eye's were closing, I was expecting them to pop open or something but!!! I am rather sad.. I knew at one point it would happen. I knew that some way or another, one of them would.. but... !!!
10/10
Why did they have to kill the old man.. what he ever do! He was so nice.. and sniper at that.
If L was to carry out his plan, then the 13 day rule would appear to be a fake, meaning that all fingers would be pointed at Light & Misa. Rem killed L, so this plan couldn't work --- meaning that Rem saved Misa's life.
This means that Rem should have done this before L had this plan ? :p
Then in that case, Shiroth was merely giving away an anime spoiler, either. Which means you have no cause to be snarking on him.
Not really -- the sub has been released, so spoilers to do with this weeks episode don't have to be in spoiler tags.
This means that Rem should have done this before L had this plan ? :p
That could have worked, but then again Rem had no reason to kill L.
I didn't even watch the second movie after hearing the ending was changed --- that and i found the first movie to be a complete waste of time. :3

I really like how they handled this episode for the most part. I was a manga reader and really looked foward to seeing it, but there were a few scenes that seemed out of place to me.
On the postive side, I get that they were trying to throw in some foreshadowing and they did a really good job of showing how L knew he was defeted. Especially in that "gay" scene they added with Light and L.
The scene of L drying Light's feet after coming in from the rain had some really good imagery in it. Besides the obvious image of L bowing before Light as an admission of defeat, there is a more subtle biblical reference to the Gospel of John 13:1-5.
Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end. And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him; Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God; He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. After that he poureth water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.
Now it may seem like a bit of a stretch to equivicate a foot massage with washing his feet, but I think that was still the intended image. And its a good choice of weeks to air the show if we're to make L out to be a Christ figure :)
I also enjoyed the foreshadowing flashbacks to L's childhood. Given the deathly silence in the air (notice there was little background music), the loud, jarring church bell sound that only L could hear showed that he knew his time was coming. There's more foreshadowing in those scenes but mentioning them goes into manga spoiler territory. Never the less I really appreciated them.
And the way L died was perfect. There was no surprise in his eyes like Ray Penbar, or sadness like Penbar's fiance. He knew he was right all along, and he knew exactly how it was going to end.
One of my few complaints is the scene with Misa walking through Tokyo and singing. It just seemed completely out of place. I did however like the way she dressed and how the blank look on her face gave her the appearance of a doll. I guess thats just another good image, considering how she was used as a tool to indirectly kill L and Watari. Plus with Rem out of the way she's completely given herself up and is now a puppet for Light to control.
Anyways, all in all a real good episode. One of my favorites yet. But its also kind of a sad note for me cause IMO this is the point in the manga where it starts to go downhill.
Edit: Glad I'm not the only one who noticed the biblical reference.

I'll miss Rem though... it was nice to have a sane, balanced character, I guess.
Why is movie spoiler here ? :upset:  :( Not all have seen it...
Yeah!! 10/10. L is dead at last!!! I'm so happy ^^
L is DEAD. Period. If you name is written in the Deathnote you die, no way around it.
Please remember that any reference from the Death Note movie would be considered a spoiler, even if enclosed in spoiler tags.
The same warnng that applies to the manga applies to the movie, i.e.
Keep spoilers from the movie out of the anime thread, or face a BAN!
You may not even post movie spoilers in spoiler tags!
I suggest anyone who has just posted about the movie (that includes quotes that mentions the movie) had better edit their posts now, or face a ban!

I just watched ep 25.
I'm going to say this show just redeemed itself. What an awesome episode. Intense.
Wow this series has just kept me at the edge of my seat all the way through. L's death was orchastrated well. And i also felt those scenes from his childhood represented some future occurance.
I also noticed the biblical refrences in the "foot" scenes.
You know an intresting thought i had was, if there are death gods, and notes to kill people, were is the opposite? You know like is there something like the Life Note, were people that find it can save and ultimatly bring people back to life?...
What im getting at is were is the other end of the death note and shinigamis. It would be quite intresting if they involved angels or a new life note of some sort...
I wonder what would have happened if it was L, not Light, who found the Death Note. Would he have used it like Light? Could the siutation be reversed (Light and company leading the investigation to find the alternate Kira ) if that were so?
I was under the impression that using the Death Note would ultimately corrupt a human soul and Light was never really an evil person in the first place..
I would have liked this episode much more if it made more sense. It was not as I expected it to be, not at all.
1. Why doesn't Misa use her eyes to see Watari's and L's true name, and let Light kill them? There are some references in ep 25 that she has them, so why not use them?
Instead, Light expects Rem to do the dirty work for him. And I can't believe that it worked!
2. Why does Rem have to kill L in order to protect Misa? It would be easy for him(/her?) to kill the criminal who is used for the check of the '13 day'-rule right on time, destroying one of the last straws L had to prove Light's and Misa's guilt. Rem is associated to the notebook that L wants to use, so Rem can find out who the criminal is without a problem.
3. Death Gods only die when they lengthen the life span of people, then why is it so certain that Misa's life is longer without L and Watari? 10+ years in Prison waiting for a Death Penalty is not very uncommon, and it is questionable if Misa's life span is long enough even for that.
I think the 'death of Death Gods'-rule is not a very logical one, anyway.
4. Rem can basically do what the wants as long as he doesn't kill L. So why not tell them more lies, or threaten them to stop the investigation? I'm sure there was something Rem could have done instead of just dying for the sake of Light.
Well, at last Light can read the true name of L in Rem's notebook in the next episode :)
1. Why doesn't Misa use her eyes to see Watari's and L's true name, and let Light kill them? There are some references in ep 25 that she has them, so why not use them?
That's the one thing I've also been wondering about. Misa made the "eye-deal" in ep 24 in order to be able to see L's name but ends up not using them for whatever reasons...
2. Why does Rem have to kill L in order to protect Misa? It would be easy for him(/her?) to kill the criminal who is used for the check of the '13 day'-rule right on time, destroying one of the last straws L had to prove Light's and Misa's guilt. Yes, that would be possible. But it wouldn't make a difference for Rem, she would die anyway since killing the criminal would also lengthen Misa's lifespan, so why not kill L in the first place; he might continue to pursue Misa even when the criminal is dead.
3. Death Gods only die when they lengthen the life span of people, then why is it so certain that Misa's life is longer without L and Watari? 10+ years in Prison waiting for a Death Penalty is not very uncommon, and it is questionable if Misa's life span is long enough even for that.
Well, Misa got the lifespan of the Death God who saved her added to her own. We got no idea how long it was, she might just have a few more hundred years to live, even after having made the eye-deal twice.
I think the 'death of Death Gods'-rule is not a very logical one, anyway.
But it's there and it's meaning is not for us mortals to question. :heh:
Well, Misa got the lifespan of the Death God who saved her added to her own. We got no idea how long it was, she might just have a few more hundred years to live, even after having made the eye-deal twice.
Well, then Misa got the life-span of Rem as well now, so she might as well survive all of them even with 10 more eyes deals :D
Or does the new owner of Rem's book (Light) get the additional life?
stunning, but where can the story go from here seeing as light's only true threat is gone.

Did you think that L would show himself to Misa when he suspects her? This was made clear in the manga and I think they did say in the anime how she wasn't allowed back in. And why would Light do that when he was confident the plan he used would work, which it did. Also, nobody knows where Watari is.(though in the anime they made it seem like he was in the same building)
One thing that the anime left out that was very important was L saying he might make whoever he caught with a Death Note write their own name into the book to prove its effectiveness. Since the lifespan Shinigami see doesn't account for deaths by the note, Rem then had no idea when Misa would actually die.

Ugh... I should be going to sleep instead of doing this but... this episode really left me with some questions.
The opening was beautiful. The animation, the art. I have to admit, I don't think it looked like Death Note at all... it was too melancholic. With all those damn youtube spoiler comments I knew what was going to happen in this episode and I knew this had to be a flashback of L's past so I paid close attention to it, being an L fan.
But exactly what did that opening sequence mean? It's really bothering me I had to find somewhere that people might give me answers and hints so I came here.
The first shot looks up to leafless branches of trees. We know it's winter and that it creates undertones of death. It follows scenes with children playing... so we're at a school or something. Then we see a child (Not L, is it??) crying in the corner, superimposed with images and sound of gears and a closing gate. Yeah, I get a hint that it's about loneliness and being shut out by society - and this ties in with L's rooftop rain scene line about not being able to trust anybody. But it's almost as if the sound of the gears is painfully unbearable for the child.
Then we see bits of a cathedral. Cut to what looks like Watari wearing something you'd wear to a funeral, holding (I'm assuming) little L's hand in front of a shut gates. The sound of bell chimes five times before the flashback ends.
There's also a second scene I want to draw attention to ... and that's the scene that follows straight after. I would have liked to know exactly what was L's response to Watari. I'm hoping in the new episodes we get more hints about it.
Certainly he didn't just go there to order Watari to delete everything if something bad were to happen to him? And seeing as that button was ready at the edge of the keyboard, I would assume L ordered Watari to do this much earlier on so there's gotta be more we're missing!
I do have to note as some of you pointed out... L looks a lot "cuter" in this episode and it's probably to make him more human and appealing. The rooftop part where he's telling Light he can't hear what he's saying. The part where he's watching Light dry his hair (after he says, "That's true, I'm sorry.") Visually I think he's looking his best in this episode.
There's one more question and it's proooobably a big spoiler and one I might be asked to edit out of my post (please let me know... I'm not intentionally spoiling it for people. No it has nothing to do with the movie... I don't know if it has anything to do with the Manga. It's just about L's name -)
I've seen people on Youtube call L "Lawlite" ... is that his name? If it is... I like it. XD I know L's supposed to be nameless but... I just wanted to know where this Lawlite comes from...
Did you think that L would show himself to Misa when he suspects her? This was made clear in the manga and I think they did say in the anime how she wasn't allowed back in.
Well, then why did Misa take the deal a second time if she knew she would never be able to get back in? Doesn't sound very convincing to me...
One thing that the anime left out that was very important was L saying he might make whoever he caught with a Death Note write their own name into the book to prove its effectiveness. Since the lifespan Shinigami see doesn't account for deaths by the note, Rem then had no idea when Misa would actually die.
I think letting criminals write in the Death Note for proofs is a very bad idea. How can you guarantee that they don't write someone else's name there? The explanation why the President of the United States dropped dead because someone 'tested' the Death Note will be pretty tough ;)

There is a special volume which goes into detail about the characters, and the storyline in the series. Thats where the name came from.
This episode was really good but im not too convinced about L`s death. You guys remember when Watari says to L"what will you do?"n it doesnt show L answer, i think L knew what was going to happen,i dont believe he would just sit there n allow Light to go on with his plan im at least hoping that L came up with some sorta plan after Watari said that to him n hopefully we`l see his plan come into effect in the next or future episodes.

This was indeed a very good episode but I found ep 24 to be better IMO..The whole L washing and massaging Light's feet was a bit too weird to me (even for L)...And I thought that eventhough L knew deep-down Light was Kira it would have been nice had we seen a definitive scene of Light smirking or giving acknowledgement while L still had enuff conciousness to register it...
The way Light played Rem was brilliant (I actually had predicted that Rem would play him go figure), and as everyone has said the animation and artistic expression this episode was too much, too good (The drawing of the bear cookies was l33t^^)...I can't believe I'm watching a program where the apparent antagonist is actually the protagonist with everyone who wants to adhere to moral justice being the bumps in his road...Light no longer has any moral compass to speak of and has succumb to the sheer intoxication of winning (Part of me is still not sure he's actually won)...Is L really dead? He sure looks dead, but please forgive my blissful ignorance manga readers...somehow I'm not content that he is indeed dead yet...All the backstory flashbacks also seemed too disjointed and unexplained for me to get the true meaning behind them...
So while this ep was indeed awesome (as most have been) some OOC moments from L and some disjointed elements had me giving it a 8/10...As great as it was a few scene changes and//or explanations would have made it a tad bit better...Unlike ep 24 I thought this ep had a couple of notciable flaws...
And the way L died was perfect. There was no surprise in his eyes like Ray Penbar, or sadness like Penbar's fiance. He knew he was right all along, and he knew exactly how it was going to end.
You see I disagree..Even though L is this crazy person he's still a person and a visual acknowledgment of the fact he found Kira and was even his friend would have enhanced him dying; would have felt more human IMO, rather than this souless acceptance he seemed to emit...

For the first one, I guess it's not explained well enough in the anime but EVERYTHING that has happened has been Light's plan from the beginning to control Rem. Light nudged things along in a certain way knowing that Misa would get the eyes and this would put the pressure on Rem. And your questioning is rather pointless anyway. You're asking why Light didn't use some other plan when the plan he did use worked flawlessly.
While making criminals write in the death note is dangerous, the statement seals up any plot holes related to Rem's knowledge of Misa's remaining lifespan and thus was a brilliant nugget of plotty-goodness. Plus if a criminal's defense is that he's not guilty because the Death Note doesn't work, writing in the President's name doesn't exactly help his case, does it? I think from a Japanese point of view, the person would be expected to take the "honorable way out."
As for the Watari question someone brought up. I think that was just L asking Watari to find a country that would allow them to test the DN on criminals. That's the only thing that makes sense but the scene was really weird. Plus there's no way Watari would be in the same building because he's supposed to be an insurance policy incase people at the headquarters die. And why would he delete his data if he's just on the next floor?

This episode is very special compared to others. However, It's very sad to see L dying because it's my favorite character. But i don't understand what the meaning of the sound of the bell that L heard ? Meaning of the death ?
I have i lot of question which affect me : we see in this episode the past of L with watari but what is the link? where does L come from? Father? Mother ? Orphan ?
In the foot scene, when L cleans Light foot, what does it means ?
as mentioned before its a biblical reference, and also to encourage light/L yaoi fanfic.

I never liked the conclusion of the manga / anime with regard to a certain someone's death. When I got to that part in the manga all interest in the series faded for me. After his death, it seems like everything was tacked on just to reach a conclusion.
In this regard, I think the movies were far better than the anime / manga.
Death Note: The Last Name
It was a very good conclusion to the series, particularly knowing who the last name is in the death note. The movie also answered one of the more important moral questions regarding Kira and the Death Note, something that the anime had a hard time reaching.

It has already been spoiled but I'll still use the tags.
Woudl Rem have time to write both W's and L's name? Could L have figured out a way to fake his one death? Perhaps by litterally dying first only to be brought back?

Remember, Light needs to get Rem out of the way as well. Misa loves Light but Light cares nothing for Misa. If something happens to Misa, Rem would kill Light. Misa has already shown that she can't be trusted with avoiding detection and she leads right back to Light. So Rem had to go to neturalize Misa.
Or maybe Light does have feeling or Misa and he wanted her to get back the life that she lost trading for the eyes. Or he wants to use her for as long as possible.
Light is playing a game and he got his own enemies to take themselves out while defelecting blame from himself.
Of course L may have made arrangements that if he died then Light must be Kira.
But that is what makes the show so damn good!
Need to guard a minute of silence. On drama, visuals, and characterizations this episode transformed itself into an artwork masterpiece of magnificient cinematographic qualities.
The black, white, and red hues of shades give it a somber, ethereal, and surreal texture to the environment. Coupled with the ominous Christian soundtracks, it became a symbolic epitome of a devil outsmarting the saints.
Misa was at the peak of her Gothic beautiness, and her song as she was carrying on with the killings made the experience spooky.
Basically, I am not too sure if Light whether intendd that L would be putting to test the 13-days death after no killings rule or not.
Light instructed Misa to carrying on with the killings, as a deliberate give away to lead L focus inminent suspicion against Misa, which worked.
L would obviously heed his hunch now that he had 99% person solid evidence to conclude both Light and Misa as the Kira and Kira 2nd, but his only obstacle was that fake rule.
However, he planned a last risk to put to test the rule on finding out if it was a ruse or not by using a test criminal to employ the note.
And had that plan carried out after planning, it would had meant the death sentence for Misa to which Rem had no choice but to step in and use her notebook to kill both Watari and L, earning Light he's so coveted and awaited triumph.
I can only interpret that L instructed Watari to delete all the files in order to prevent Kira put his hands on them, and he was perfectly awared that his Kira did always stood at his right side, Yagami Light.
To the memory of L.
It was inevitable. The staff accomplished a beautiful feat on portraying L's traces of his childhood; the sorrow of his loneliness; and his death as L gives him the farewell with a malevolent smile tinged in crimson.
I felt more identified with L than in any other episode, because I know his pain. The bitterness of being alone and without friends, and the fear and hardships one suffers to approach others.
The highlight of this intermedium was L moment with Light, and both they looked as behaving as the best of friends with their faces shining on the light but exposed to the darkness from behind.
The story calls for development on the plot, but still the performances by the characters outdone the episode. An absolute 10. The first act has finished, but Light should not cry victory too son, there it still not over yet.
And pretty ironic that he claims not to be a liar upon L, given that he has had scheme and plot under his father's nose in order to become the God of his ideal world.

*L is British, right? All the bells and stain glasses makes him British! The Raito L part... it's from the Bible, right? In the stairs, wiping Jesus' feet... I'm not familiar with the Bible so can someone expalin it to me?*
Hmm, there is 1 thing I didn't really get.
Misa made the eye trade with ryuuk, right?
So, why did light force Rem to kill L by asking Misa to kill some guys when he could just ask her to look at L's real name?
or was it just to get rid of Rem at the same time?
anyway, great episode!
The music was so intense and moving
I especially loved the scene on the roof when L said "Have you ever spoken a word of truth since you were born" and the long silence after that... L was so sure that Kira was light... I feel really sad for him :(
the fight was so unfair :/ Misa+Light+Rem, all against L :x

Perfect 10. I had been busy with other stuff, and only this week sat down to catch up on the series(powered through 24 episodes in 3 work days). Absolute perfect episode. I don't know how the rest of the series can stack up at this point.
The match between L and Light was often the highlight of the series. Having said that, I was rooting for Light. :D

he wants to get rid of Rem too, Rem is a threat to him. also L is very cautious of Misa, if Light tries too hard to get them to meet again, that would backfire on him.

OK, so I'd made the mistake of spoiling myself by reading the manga, so I knew what was coming, however I think how they handled it in the anime was quite superb. A real sense of foreboding through the episode.
The feet thing: 57 yaoi doujinshi writers punched the air.
Seriously, I'm glad I'm not the only person who spotted the biblical metaphor going on there.
L died for our sins.
Whenever you eat lots of sweet things, do this in rememberance of him.

Would also like to know that... if it does happen then this is going down the hill as I dont like "reincarnations" all too well in an anime... If L remains dead then I would t have anything to complain about... :D
How about a simple yes or no for those who have spoiled themselves ? ;)

I liked Light in the beginning, but started to dislike him when he started murdering police. Killing the utterly likable fiancé was the turning point, after which I began to detest him. Now, the transition is complete, and he is a horrible monster - a loathsome abomination. Bonus 'hate' points for killing Rem and being mean to MisaMisa. Though I admit, Rem was pretty damn dumb; he should've killed Light.
Light is not a monster like Johann, because at least he has some sort of altruistic motive; and he is not wanton. Regardless, when he senses the slightest possible advantage from it, he is every bit as cruel as Johann, and enjoys it even more.

I got a stupid theroy :D (note that I'm not a manga reader)
In fact, L is a robot (or a clone) and everything he see is immediately sent to the HQ somewhere in London (wich mean they saw Light expression).
And later, L with a new body will come back and say "Hi Light-kun, I arrest you as Kira"
What do you think ? :heh:

In fact, L is a robot (or a clone) and everything he see is immediately sent to the HQ somewhere in London (wich mean they saw Light expression).
And later, L with a new body will come back and say "Hi Light-kun, I arrest you as Kira"
What do you think ? :heh:
I think that's wrong. Both L and Watari were death-sentence criminals all along, being controlled by Ryuk in a plot to use Light to kill Rem!

Best episode of the series. This series continues to play with your emotions by fully understanding what your brain thinks and feel. The atmosphere in this episode was so tense, yet, it is supposed to be the anti-climax of the arc. It's like they are trying to make a contradicting effect and it works perfectly.
All I can say is :upset:  :upset:
I'll be mourning L for weeks :upset:

Gosh, I dont understand what kind of mood it was throughout the hole eppisode.. I've never experienced a mood \ feeling like this before, especially at the part where hes drying lights feet... And at the part in the rain... and the part where L dies.. Can anybody explain these moods \ feelings to me?

Maybe it is a premonition that something terrible is about to happen.
During the rain scene, I think L was preparing for his last move against Light. If it fails, it is game over for him. Maybe his act of drying Light's feet is the last task he will do for his first friend? :eyebrow:
Damn L is gone shet!!! I cried for a little..damn feel so bad :) Also this screen shot what does he mean? http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m273/vincentcool/bscap000.jpg
something that was a doubt from the beginning was put to an end in this episode.
Raito > L.
so far, all his plans went exactly like he planned. the guy is master.

I think it's more like Death Gods > L. Throughout the series, you can see that L is clearly smarter than Raito. Without the help of the Death Gods, it would be almost impossible for Raito to kill L.

well.. since both shinigamis are Raito helpers, we can't say that it was a fair fight, heh. it was meant to be. if L outsmarted Raito PLUS the shinigamis, then he'd be a God, or something.
Again, what if L didn't have a real name, and the name above his head randomly floated between any number of aliases? He already seemed to be able to predict his death, so I don't see how farfetched it is that he might have an idea of around when he might die. Remember, he fell AFTER Watari did.
The only circumstances under which a human is free from the Death Note is if their name is accidentally misspelled four times. Since Light never knew L's name, he obviously never tried to write it, so L was not free from the Note. Another of the Note's Rules is that if you use the Shinigami eyes (and I am assuming that this means it also applies to Shinigami, since it's their eyes, anyway) you will see the name required to kill that person. Which means it wouldn't have changed between different aliases, it would have shown whatever name would be needed to kill him. Go ahead, go through all the rules of the Death Note, I doubt you'll find any loopholes. L is dead. Sad, even for me, and I'm super-pro-Kira, but it's true.

even tho i knew that this was going to happen seeing it actually happen brought tears to my eyes...L and watari is going to go to heaven for sure  so with this light has totally destroyed his opponents...not a good day to see the bad guy win >.< i also feel for rem...but the reason as to why she didnt kill light as well was that she didnt want to make misa sad (misa who is already brain washed...creepy song O.o)

sigh, as for me, i never read the death note manga and stayed away from any death note online (forums, other sites) and didn't even watch previews just so that the series would continue to surprise me.
but nothing prepared me for ep 25. i couldn't believe it. i was about to tear out my hair at the end of the episode... i wasn't expecting that at all. well i expected it, but i also expected a way around it. i was so depressed. my poor L ;_;
even though i already had the whole series on my computer, i couldn't watch death note for a week after this episode.
I sort of knew what would might happen in Ep 25, but I must say, ep 24 was the best ep in Death Note.

Ah.. Watari and L rocks, they dont deserve to die.
Watching L die made me TT_TT
If Rem havent interfered, L would have won the case.
Light has the supernatural helping him, its so unfair.

Light does seem to have the helping hand and luck that L does not, but the fact that L had stood on par with him despite those factors for so long just proves that L is all too bad ass.
Unlike Near, or Nate Rivers, whichever you want. Who needed both Mello's help and the luck of a gambler.
I've just seen ep25. Damn that was so awesome, best DN episode so far.

:( I think in my opinion that they should make a new series of deathnote. It would be awesome..

Well, after watch L's death and Watari's death, I think the show falls in an argumental crysis, I mean, DN should finish with L's death, the following episodes are just pointless to me:uhoh:

I agree. D:
Ok, WEIRD question for you all but this seemed like the right place to ask...
In this episode L is eating this type of panda-cookies and I'm wondering if anyone here knows the name of the things.. ^^; The episode reminded me that those things exist and are awesome, so if anyone knows, tell me! :heh:
About the episode: to me all the foreshadowing really made the impact of THE scene a lot less. I was more shocked when Watari died than when L died. Big shame really..
Just watched ep 25, I can't believe L died so... easily! it's so undignified. *bawl* Light is evil, evil.

The episode was one of the best, without question. Light's plan coming fully into motion was so intelligent. Now this episode show both L and Light's skill. L, did in fact again suspect Light and Misa, he grew suspicions of the rules, which he was right. Hence the reason he was going have it tested out, because if the criminal did not die then the rules would be false, and that could and would open up the option that Light, and Misa both could still be Kira. So L did figure it out, it's just Light was always one step ahead and knew Rem would take care of them both. Yes, Light did get lucky in some cases, but luck surely did not carry him this far. A great episode; loved Light's award winning acting skills. It's a shame that Near had to be so unintelligent and beat Light.. seems like bad decisions seem to get paid off - poker players would agree with this, bad play always gets paid off.

So am I the only who found Rem's actions in this ep totally idiotic?
By taking out L and herself (which she knew would happen) all she managed to do was take out anybody capable of stopping Light setting up Misa's eventual death by Light's hand the instant she was no longer useful. It's been said by the creators that Light would never love her and in fact was such a stuck up asshole that he wasn't capable of loving anybody ever because that would be admitting that someone was near his equal.
The smarter thing to do would have been to cut a deal with L involving the pardoning of Light and Misa in exchange for information that destroying the Death Notes would get rid of Kira's power and memories of ever being Kira. With the threat of killing L should he ever break the deal and arrest Light or Misa.
In that way Misa could get her happiness with Light who might actually grow to love her without the DN induced psychotic God complex or at the very least not be able to kill her whenever it suited him.

You forget, Rem would do anythign for Misa, so Light's will woud've been done either way,

I don't believe Rem was so willing to do anything for Misa that she'd guarantee her death. That whole part was just bad writing to extend the series.
Does anyone else find it weird that this is the same episode number in which
Hughes dies? :(
It's so.. depressing...
I HATE YOU, 25!!

Although I really hated what went down I will admit i was happy to see one of them go, if they had'nt I could have seen the series suffering dramastically for it.

Magnificent episode, though I found it to be very hard to watch. I've only watched it twice- once in Japanese and once in English.
