I was wondering if anyone knew the exact date Beyond the Clouds would be out in Japan? Is it a threatrical release or a DVD release? What's weird is at Animenfo, there is a review (the last review on the second page) where the reviewer saw it. Plus the person said that the movie is really hard to find....

:hmm: It couldn't have been the pilot because he also said there was some slight action in it. For all I know, there is not much action (in terms of physical fighting) in the pilot unless you count that gun scene action...

There's no set date just yet. Last word is sometime in Auguest of this year, but there's no other info. Somewhere in the forums there's a thread about this that was posted a couple months ago. I think that has more info on it.

What exactly is Beyond the Clouds about? I know that there's a documentary movie about day-to-day life in a small Chinese town called Beyond the Clouds. In all honesty, I'm pretty sure the two are unrelated, but I just found it interesting that the same words would be used. (And btw, if anyone knows the kanjii /chinese characters/ hahn-ja [all the same] for the words "Beyond the Clouds" just PM me and we can compare what I have to see if the two are indeed the same)

The full title, from the title screen in the trailer, is 雲のむこう、約束の場所: kumo no mukou, yakusoku no basho (beyond the clouds, the promised place), and it is most definitely not about day-to-day life in a small Chinese town.

Does anybody remember this anime? A year or so ago I remember a lot of hype around it cause it was made by the same guy as Hoshi no Koe (Makoto Shinkai). There were even trailers released.

Then it got delayed. And everybody forgot about it. So did it ever come out? And if so, has it been subbed?

Still delayed. :(

Lord Raiden
2004-06-12, 08:58
I'm starting to get curious what all the delaying is for. There's gotta be a better reason than "It's not done." Maybe something like "my producer is an idiot and I'm stalling till he sees things my way" would make the wait more bearable.

I don't know how I've missed this trailer all this time. I just watched the one released by Vagrant.

This series (EDIT: I see it's actually a movie, bummer) looks great. Looks like some really deep drama. No retarded action or mindless fanservice. Just a good story. I can't wait for it to come out, whenever that ends up happening. :)

I really am interested to watch the movie, it has a very exciting feeling about it. The music helps in creating this wonderful thrilling mood... the plane flying at such heights and so on... Heh. Though Sayuri doesn't seem like a particularly extraordinary girl I think she's portrayed very well and for once I don't think I actually hate any of the characters for being annoying or unrealistic...

That's Cinema Rise theater (singular, not plural). There is only one Cinema Rise theater, and it is in Shibuya as you go up Spain Hill and it is a huge theater in front of the PARCO department store.

Also, just in case anyone wants a link to the original Japanese trailers for "Kumo no Mukou, Yakusoku no Basho," they can be found at the official site at:

http://www.kumonomukou.com/trailer.html

There are three versions, one each on HTTP and the other on FTP, with large and small sizes for your convenience. From top to bottom, they are:

Shinkai Makoto's original trailer (120 seconds)
Regular theater trailer (90 seconds)
Pilot film (200 seconds)

What's with all the different fansub groups releasing the trailers? If it's in theaters then won't it be awhile before it's out on DVD so it can be subbed?

And going by how amazing Voices of a Distant Star was I wouldn't be shocked if it's licensed quickly. I hope it's a little more happier though, man I teared up so much during Voices...

This does look very very good. I wonder if it has any chance to get released with subtitles in the US theaters and be nominated for best animation Oscar like Spirited Away?

A theatrical release in 35mm with subtitles would be nice. Isn't that what's going on with Innocence 2? Kumo no Mukou has the "not as popular as Ghost in the Shell" thing going against it being shown in theaters, but the "niche market" thing going for it being shown with subtitles.

plus it's pretty short compared to most films that get even a limited release. Hopefully it'll be at film/anime conventions, though, or just be released on DVD quickly

eitherway it has to be finished first, but you can't really rush something that only a handful of people are working on and even more so when you consider the quality of the work

power to the independed animators!

Short? 90 mins is a pretty average length for an animated film.

Lord Raiden
2004-09-23, 01:30
I'm hearing that there's something big holding this up, some kind of dispute, but I've got conflicting reports of what specifically. I've heard of everything from legal and licencing issues to problems with the final release to crazy stuff like internal bickering between the director, authors, studio. In short, you name it, I've probubly heard it. So all I can say is that since I don't have two sources that agree right now, I'm going to assume that it's something internal to the studio that's delaying this.

But give it time. It will eventualy be out. If it's anything like the previous releases by this guy, it will be worth the wait.

Sakuya
2004-09-23, 13:59
It's been delayed again? I thought it was finally going to premiere again? Hopefully, whatever problems they have, they will solve them.

Lord Raiden
2004-09-23, 20:18
Well, there's been problems all along that have held it up time and again. It would move forward for a while, hit a wall, they'd fight through it, then advance some more, then hit a wall, etc. So this is no surprise. The part that's interesting is they have a december 10th planned and haven't changed it or moved it back any. So I would say that this is an expected hangup, ie one they planned on. So, unless you hear the date change sooner or later than Dec 10th, that's the last confirmed date of release I've gotten.

Yeah, try more like 2. This isn't one that's going to hit DVD in the states anytime soon. ADV is so backlogged right now with their big rush to licence spree that it will be at least two years on most titles (except the ones they rush to market) from the time the item was licenced.

Way to go ADV. You just screwed 90% of the american population for the next 2 years. Gauds, I hate ADV. But oh well. I honestly don't care cause I'm going to buy my DVD as an R2 and snag the subs from someone on the net as I refuse to buy from ADV for many, many reasons I don't care to recount.

Tell me why there is a need for a fansub if the goal of the Japanese company is to bring it stateside?

I agree with you 1000%. I hope the Japanese company gets a deal settled, although there will still be fansubs.

I saw multiple groups fansub Ghost In the Shell: Innocence even after the US release had been announced.

Anime movies being released theatrically are still a rarity so any that do get the deal I wish fansub goups wouldn't hurt their box office numbers by releasing a fansub.

Someone may say "I'll still see it in the theater, buy the dvd, etc..." well good for them, but for every person THAT DOES DO THAT. There's 2 or 3 who will just watch the fansub and skip seeing it in the theater.

Lord Raiden
2004-10-23, 19:37
Yeah, and those are the same type of people who'd do just about anything short of killing someone or robbing a store to get their stuff for free. You'll never change people like that. Fansubs or no fansubs these people will still find some way in one form or another to watch the movie for free. You'll never change that. What we need to do is instead of worrying about whether the movie will get fansubed or not and the honor behind that, we need to make sure to educate everyone we know and our community that leaching is bad, buying is good.

While some people may never change their stingy leaching ways, a lot will if you do it right. :)

Nah, it wasn't powow blow your mind away.

Plus, it got dwarfed by Howl's Moving Castle.

You must remember this guy is an amateur. He doesn't know how to do character keyframe animation. He takes digital photographs and makes them beautiful. He's good at using Lightwave and making contrails and reflections and lens flares. He's also a good director, as evidenced by the music-video-like pace of most of his work, including those for h-game company minori.

That aside, I need a way to see this film AND give the guy some of my money to show support. And the yen is so strong right now it's near impossible for me at this time to go to Japan.

Lord Raiden
2004-11-23, 10:51
Dude, the yen isn't strong. It's the dollar that's tanked lately. We're loosing ground against almost every currency in the world. But that's another story. As far as the show goes, I too was surprised to hear that it did in fact come out on time and more surprised to find that it aired on the day that I last posted. I IM'ed a friend of mine to see if he'd seen it and he had, so I asked what he thought of it. His rating of it was 10/10 for animation, but only 5/10 for story, and 4/10 for charecter development.

Kind of depressing given how long we've waited. :( Then again this is just the opinion of one person so far. kj ought to tell us what he thought of this if he's seen it.

Just saw it on DVD, and I don't like it as much as I like Voices of a Distant Star. Actually I didn't know it was from the same director, though as I was watching it I thought stylistically it's similar to Voices (I probably knew it--otherwise I wouldn't have rented it--but it took so long for me to get it that I've forgot about this. :heh:)

For one, I really hate stories that are heavily dependent on McGuffins. As a starting point, sure, but don't keep fscking referring to it if there's no intention on ever explaining its functions / working principles / reasons to exist / etc. I know some (most?) people aren't bothered by this, but for some reason it just really irks me. :frustrated: My above complaint is applicable to Voices as well. However, since it was such a short piece I can understand why the director decided to put his emphasis elsewhere.

Lastly, the pacing of the story is too slow for me. I think the story would have worked better had it been 1 hour instead of 90 minutes.

martino
2006-06-25, 12:18
You are right about the pace. It was quite slow, but I believe that it was the intention of the director. It just isn't one of these action animes, but one which contains deeper stuff than just flying lead. You also need some time to take all of the story in and analyse it. That's why I thought that the pace was just right.

2006-07-07, 06:39

-Excellent artwork (gotta love the style he uses) A+

Talk about digging up old threads. I totally agree with you guys about the slow pace, after i finally watched it tonight (it had been on my to watch list for a year lol). I guess the director tried to go with that deep dramatic characterization with the characters like in Voices of a Distant Star, but truthfully I wasn't very hooked onto them. The visuals were absolutely stunning, however.

I was re-watching this recently, and I was wondering if anyone knows what the book is that Sawatari is reciting from at the beginning of the movie (in the classroom)? Is it the same book that Hiroki is reading on the train near the end (Kenji Miyazawa's Spring and Asura)?

As an aside, a new Makoto Shinkai film is apparently currently due in "early spring" 2007. There's a short trailer on the official page, http://5cm.yahoo.co.jp/.

To reply to my own posting, the poem is indeed by K. Miyazawa. A complete version is here: http://www.home.ix.netcom.com/~kyamazak/lit/_Jpoet/miyazawa_eiketu.htm.

Yes, several years older thought.

Go watch 5 Centimeters per Second.
NAO.

No seriously, you'll like it. It's been hailed as Makoto Shinkai's greatest work so far, and I think so as well. Somewhat of a more realistic and touching remake of Voices of a Distant Star with updated music (very much so.), animation (even moreso.), etc.
And I have a pretty high opinion of Voices of a Distant Star too.

And to create discussion, has this novel I've heard about for The Place Promised in Our Early Days been translated and such? I'd like to get my hands on a copy.

And Makoto Shinkai and The Place Promised in Our Early Days are both quite well known, too.

EDIT: I found the previous thread (http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?t=4552) as well, though it's a bit... outdated.

anyways, out of the three movies, this one is my least favorite (that's not to say i don't love it too though). i guess that the sci-fi was too weird in this one. even though it played off the aspect of distance like Shinkai's other works, this distance was a little strange for me. plus there's an ambiguity Sayuri that's been nagging at me.

still a great movie, i especially love the music. plus Waking Hour by Koop is one of the best AMVs i've seen. go dig it up.

anyways, for that ambiguity, Hiroki goes back to the shed at the beginning of the movie and reflects on the events. (essentially the whole movie is a flashback if you missed that part). but that would imply that Sayuri died or left him after the events of the movie. maybe i've missed something in 4 years since i first saw it, but thats a pretty big hole in the plot to me.

the jet fighter scene and when their own jet circles the tower are among the most beautiful scenes i've seen animated. the other ones are Shinkai works as well.. haha

*points to title* this one gets a 9/10 from me, with his other two getting 10/10

I agree. The sci-fi element in Voices of a Distant Star were very minor, and weren't really influencing the actual plot much (I bet Shinkai just wanted some robots in his OVA.), though The Place Promised in our Early Days contained a lot of these scientific elements that may have made it difficult to follow.

I found "Momentum" to be better than "Waking Hour", anything that comes out of Koopiskeva is amazing anyway. Somewhat like Makoto Shinkai, except with less Candy Pop.
haha.

And in case you want to know, I've rated Shinkai's works as such:
5 Centimeters per Second - 10
The Place Promised in our Early Days - 8
Voices of a Distant Star - 8

thread necro. so i have a question.
does Saiyuri die? because as i remember, the story is a flashback. and she isn't there at the beginning when Takuya begins to recount everything

i don't have the dvd with me cause i'm at school.

A long time ago, some english language writer said we should only be alowed to use the word beautiful just a few times in one life.

So Shinkai gets 3 of mine.

Most of what was shown was a flashback, however when he's recounting everything, he hadn't met up with Saiyuri again. The tower was the last scene in the story chronologically.

It was a happy ending at last.

God the animation in this movie was unreal. I was floored by how much attention to detail there was.

I just rewatched this film and I think that it has more meat than 5cm. A little bit less on romance, but more on that longing feeling.

Especially when I did more research on the story. I have to deal with depressing stories everyday in real life. When I watch anime, I have to have a somewhat happy ending or the story is just crap to me.

I just watched this after hearing some good reviews on it. ( i know im kinda late D:). I watched it, but I don't really get it though...what happened in the end? When the girl sayuri woke up...it just pretty much ended right there and I'm like huh? I was lost throughout the whole movie pretty much, someone fill me in!! I wanna know why this movie is so good, then I can watch it again and get it maybe x.x I'm usually not this slow...

This was on my backlog for a long time after seeing 5cm a second and wanting to see other Makoto Shinkai works, but I too just recently finished it. As for the ending, what I understood and what I got out of the ending was:

When Sayuri woke up all that time (a few years) she was in the coma and was still in contact with Hiroki through her dreams was lost which meant all those feelings she developed was lost too. That's why she was crying at the end because before she woke up she wanted to express to him she loved him but after waking up she didn't remember anything yet that overwhelming feeling of love was still there.

While it wasn't like she was meeting Hiroki for the first time there was still a huge time gap between when she was younger and Hiroki in his current age and the things he went through in his life while she was sleeping. Now it's almost like they were strangers again which lead into Hiroki's "We the lost the place of our promise in this world....even so....our lives begin now." final line.

I'll appreciate it if someone could confirm I'm somewhere in the ballpark there but that's what I got out of the ending heh.

So far, I've seen 5cm a second, Voice of the Distant Star and this. At the moment 5cm a second is still my favorite but I think Voice of the Distant Star might top it once I read the manga version of it. 30min was too short of time to really feel anything for the characters or situation in it.

the manga really supplements the anime, iirc. there's stuff in it that isn't in the anime and vice versa. is best to consider them one thing.
