The following is based on [a.f.k.]'s fansub.

Random Thoughts on Ep01:
---- ----

The OP is insane. I haven't had to apply speed-reading skills for some time now. :heh: Loving the lyrics.
.
Unsurprisingly, the food segment was a whole lot smoother once I actually understood what they were talking about. Scarily, for some of the conversation, I actually have had similar talks with my friends before; especially on the issue of various cooking methods.

"SALT!"
"NO SALT!"
*cue half-an-hour argument over the merits of adding salt*

(Yes folks, there ARE men who know how to cook and like to talk about it too)
.
Some of the transitions between conversation topics was a bit abrupt, but it can also be viewed as a realistic example of casual banter between friends which can wildly derail without a moment's notice.
.
Kagami is love. She is shaping up to be my favourite character in Lucky Star. Her remarks on the other girls are often a riot, and she is hilarious when she loses her composure, such as the time she screeched at Miyuki after the physical examination. :heh:
.
Lucky Channel remains my favourite part of the episode. For those who do not know yet, the male presenter is the VA of Taniguchi (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=14922) from "Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu".
.
It has been mentioned before already, but I too imagined Akira taking out a smoke when she went into that guttural tone of voice.
.
I am hoping that Lucky Channel will continue, and that they use it as a platform to poke fun at the whole anime industry as a whole. :heh: Self-deprecating humour is wonderful when done right.
.
For those wondering about the song that Konata is singing in the ED...

zxywjURzHYgUchû Tetsujin Kyodain (1976)

ADD] Some Quotes: :heh:

Kagami: "Is this woman a Saint?! That would've never occured to me!"

Cheers.

I threw a "9" at the first ep (mostly because I thought the food seqment probably belongs in the middle or towards the end for the sake of people unfamiliar to the comic). I rated it so highly because it was a really tight adaptation of the comic. If you like the comic, that's great --- if 4-koma puts you to sleep, move along.

The OP was wild wacky nutso .... an interesting 180 from the calm syncopation of the content. The ED silliness (extended offscreen karaoke) is greatness because Kona sings so wonderfully horribly and puts her whole being into it (Aya must have a great time with it, though you wonder what it is doing to her normal singing :) ).

The anime and manga is like a japanese version of Peanuts but with injected moe and current fads. There's a subtle 'philosophy' but mostly an exposition of character personalities that manage to accept each other despite frustrations.

I'm also interested in seeing how far into the manga they get in 24ish eps, especially with the Lucky*Channel segment. Its a hysterical segment but it has two problems:
1) It removes time that could be used for more source content.
2) Once we explore the bipolar Akira (funny a few times) what do they do next? I just find it a bit tough to think they can do that the entire season.

Overall, I'm loving the adaptation and Konata and Kagami are particular wins.

@Skane: fabulous youtube link... omigod that so reminds me of watching Ultraman when I was kid in the 1960s.... I loved that show (so campy). Unfortunately, my local station dropped it just as soon as two of the rangers started having feelings for each other (can't have kids seeing romance I guess...????).

i gave it a 3. I don't hate the anime i just thought that 10 minutes of talking about food was boring. I still have hopes for this anime though.

Codine: As popular as this show seems, it really is more of a niche series is the thing. I'll admit the food part did start to drag a bit after awhile, but overall you have to have appreciation for 4-koma stuff, and the humor/silliness in the various things we do in real life. It is a good series, it's just not a series that everyone will enjoy. Much like some people don't like horror or shoujo, etc.

aye... I'm not going to complain or rant at anyone who doesn't like it. It is very much a "special tastes" sort of thing (to quote Mayumi from Shuffle!). I happen to love this sort of droll subtlety.

I voted 9 for the 1st episode. The opening was GREAT!!! The story flow blends well with the manga, but it's kinda different when you imagine it while reading scantalations and watching the anime sub and raws. Still this anime has ALOT of potential and I love the parodies. Konata Ryu VS Foreigner LOL that gave me a good laugh. Seems this is more on words than the slap stick comedic anime.

I gave the first episode a 7. As has been mentioned in the generic thread, it isn't hilarious just constantly amusing and I feel that is the way it is supposed to be.

I got some good grins out of it and a few chuckles, and that can be hard to do for me. The food scene did drag on a bit, but it was amusing to watch for it's mundane normalcy and to familarize myself with how the characters interact.

Thinking about it I probably should've given the episode an 8, ah well.

[Edit] oops, apparently I DID vote an 8, thats what I get for voting and then deciding to write my own little mini-opinion a few hours later. :o

In hindsight, once Lucky Star is finished, we'll probably look back at this first episode and think, "Yeah, KyoAni you smart bastards you got me again! Now I see why you did what you did with the first episode!"

At least that's what I thought of their last 3 animation series: Air, Haruhi and Kanon. Those three series came in full circle once they ended.

I voted "very good" since the first episode was very funny. :D

So, how do you eat your food? :heh: I seriously hope it continues in this style, being about everything but something.

I got a question might sound domb to some but i am currious to understand.

I watched the first ep when it first was released. I downloaded it because of the information that was provided. Seems liek ti could be fun. But when i watched it it was very painfull to watch and stay awake at the same time. So i thought sicne normaly im a type ofve guyt hat tend to like a very wide varayaty ofve animes that this must be a fluke anime.

But yet this anime just got it's self its very own forum section when i would argue tot he death to give some other animes a section and take this one out.

So what is so great about this anime? What did I miss? Why do you all liek this anime? basicly i wanan understand what i don't :P so replies into telling me were i failed to appreciate this series would be very welcomed.

Mainly there is no such thing as "missing something" There is no Plot and such things, is plain and simple an art of Comedy you do like or not.

Its kind of like some people think Monty Python is hysterical and others sit there and just blink asking "whats so funny?"
(or Hitchhiker's Guide or Firesign Theater... National Lampoon... )

the humor is in the details, the implicit, the style of delivery, character humor (some characters just make one laugh).

The food sketch seems to throw many people off... its like an old George Burns gag .... the setup runs for 4, 5 or more minutes and then the payoff is so mild that people either blinkstare or die laughing.

I think one of the reasons so many people didn't "get" it at first was the lousy translation. I rewatched ep1 with the wind sub and it was orders of magnitude more sensible than previously. AFK seems to be the consensus favorite, and I don't disagree with that either. But the jokes here don't have a chance with a sloppy sub.

What made it work for me is Konata revisits the topic at the end of the show. Can you say, "running gag"?

I also liked it better now that I understand the personalities better. The seriousness with which ultra-otaku-Konata declares, "You don't flip it."

I thought the opening was cute and well-animated so I decided to watch this, but... it was a painful experience. It's like being locked in a small room with the most uninteresting people in the world and being forced to listen to the most dull conversations imaginable. Yikes. It's a shame, too, because the characters ARE potentially interesting -- they're just presented in extremely boring situations. This show is a waste of good character ideas and good animation.

Some shows can do this kind of thing well, but this is not one of them. I can't believe half of that episode was about proper ways to eat food. It was slightly interesting for about thirty seconds, and then it stretches on and on and on...

The only thing that kept me from voting "painful" was the nice opening. Other than that, the only part of the entire episode that was even slightly funny was the very end with the crazy pink haired girl with the long sleeves. Everything else... ugh. Not touching any more of this.

I love OP, one of my favourites beside Samurai Champloo. I can't stop myself from re winding the fast-paced opening with random lyrics every now and then xD

I agree that food section really drags on for too long, nevertheless as a whole, the show fits in my taste for humours. Of course, the best part is LUCKY CHANNEL with kawaii host.

like i said you either love it or hate it ~ i actually thought that the gag with the food talk was actually a test to the viwers to see if this series is right for them so its probably a good idea to quit earlier rather than later for those who really found it boring ~ the "being locked up with uninteresting people" part is intentional but it also reflects realism...real people can actually talk crap and have fun while outsiders think its just retarded (think at my friends at school as an example)

Re. the food talk, the fact is that Kona-chan is an out and out otaku and she obsesses about every little thing, it’s her that keeps bringing up the questions of how best to eat cream horns etc with everyone who passes by, much to the dismay of Tsukasa who was presumably just making light conversation. That’s what’s so funny about the food scenes, Kona-chan just can’t let go, she has to pore over every tiny detail of any subject that comes up. That’s also of course how she ends up being able to win the UFO Catcher thing and play games so well, it’s that otaku personality trait.

Telliamed

Precisely. Consider this: Instead of a girl named Konata, it's a boy named Konicchi (is that a resonably guy's name?) And instead of talking about the right way to eat and prepare food, he spent eight and a half minutes talking about the right way to build a computer. Then most of the same people griping about how "boring" the show is would be raving on how great it is and calling it "l33t" and "pwnz" and other such silliness.

Irony of course is, Kona-chan would totally school those guys.

Edit: (next post down) Bwahaha! I missed that. This is the kind of thing that justifies KyoAni's reputation.
Mind you I hate to think how that looks on a TV with overscan!
Isn't that why everyone here watches their anime on the computer?

I like how they make play of Kona-chan’s height, the composition of this scene in ep.1 of three of the girls talking is a classic.

The Lucky star girls really have a food fetish!!!!

and ive already chosen my fav chara...Konata-chan!!! X3

I find it weird how she's wayyyyy into anime and games....cause she reminds of someone very familiar ><

but she too kawaii ^^...even when she sounds really gay when she talks about what she finds a real turn on in girls...and notice when a girl is really kawaii ^^"

Here are quotes i find best from Kona-chan in ep 1 :

"I'm stupid so I don't have to worry about getting the flu"

(coming out of the nurse's office) "I haven't grown at all"

"I was thinking the Tigers season had started...so the schedule for new anime gets all messed up"

...X3

I actually kinda liked the first episode and I thought the food talk was kinda educational (How is this educational?). My fav characters are Tsukasa and Kagami but Tsukasa looks way cuter. Konata reminds me of one of my classmates at school since they're both short and they like anime and stuff. I don't really know but I get this REALLY weird feeling that when the series ends, I think ADV might pick it up since they got Azumanga Daioh and all.

A lot of people have been griping about the food part, since it isn't funny in the least.... and I agree, it's not funny, but I still enjoyed listening to them talk about such a trivial matter. Don't we all do that from time to time?

My favorite is Kona-chan, but I personally think Kagami is the cutest; it's her personality, I tell ya. :)

For me the beauty of the food bit was how they used such a mundane topic to explore the characters' personalities. It's a bit long and there aren't many big laughs; however, as a viewer I got a feeling of who the girls are and how they relate to each other. I think overall it was time well spent.

9 of 10 just because great as it is it's not a masterpiece.
Looks like I'm like a lot of people I fell in love the moment I saw the crazy OP. Took me three or four views just to catch most of what was being said.
BTW, about the food bit, which side IS the head? Please tell me the head isn't the thin end because what does that make the fat end the brown stuff's coming out of? I don't care whether you're thinking seashell or caterpillar, that's a viewpoint I'd really like to avoid.>_<

Hm... It's called a chocolate seashell in Korean, so I'm predisposed to think of it as a seashell. It was a rather rude awakening to think of it as a caterpillar... :heh: *I* personally think the fat side is the head, because to me, tail = small/thin/weak etc.

Whatever. It doesn't really matter much to me except I don't want to watch any female licking chocolate coming out of the opposite end from the head. It just seems wrong on so many levels.
That said, it's sort of strange how some of the characters come across to me. For some reason, Tsukasa is the one character who seems to scream "loli" to me, despite the fact that she's a foot taller and more developed than Konata. I guess it's that dimwitted innocence. I suppose this goes to show that you're never too old, developmentally or chronologically, to be a little child. And Akira actually makes me sometimes think "baba". Her counter-persona when she drops her mask is just too extreme. She sounds like she'd spent the last twenty years with three cigarettes in her mouth and two more for the nostrils, all the while never walking unless it was over the pitiful masses. I guess that goes to show that a girl's never too young, again in time or growth, to be a hag.

Well, I have to agree that episode one was hard to go through, especially if you don't know anything about the series or didn't have it recommended to you by a friend or something of the like. It actually took me two weeks after seeing episode one to actually start watching the series, because I thought I wouldn't be able to stand it if half the episodes were a discussion of how to eat a bunch of foods I had never even heard of.

But surviving the first episode is probably the only trial you'll have to go through before becoming a L*S fan. :P And I second on the smart lines. The characters make it sound simple, but most quotes and references are very well crafted and carefully picked. Even if I'm a 24/7 otaku, I wouldn't be able to understand half the quotes in Lucky*Star if we didn't have the references topic and all.

Samatarou
2007-09-09, 12:57
At least with Lucky☆Star, if you don't like the episode you can just watch the OP for 24 minutes instead, there's not many series you can say that about, Higurashi maybe.

I like well observed slice-of-life so I enjoyed the food talk etc, it introduced us to the dynamics between Kona-chan and Tsukasa, Konachan is always sure she's right whilst Tsukasa tends to back off in the face of contrary opinions.

Agree with Skane here... ep 1 is one of my favorites because it was an excellent adaptation of the manga rather than an injected mess of reference intrusions.

People who buy the manga after watching the series are likely to be unhappy if they were buying it thinking they were going to get a load of Haruhi, FMP, Animetenchou, or even Lucky Channel. The manga reads more like a japanese version of Peanuts or Zits and is more a descendent of Azumanga Daioh... if you want references, I suggest Paniponi Dash where you can almost get a degree in Asian Studies from watching it.

(after viewing the entire series, I'm mixed but mostly okay with the anime-only injections -- but I'm damn glad this "reference injection" was less popular or not part of the Azumanga Daioh adaptation)

Hi All!

I haven't grabbed the mangas yet to find out for sure, but anyone who has please tell me, did Konata REALLY beat the tar out of a Arnold Schwarzengger look-alike about to molest Tsukasa or was that just another fantasy she whipped up again?? Also -- did the stars and stripes on the big guy's biceps mean something subtle in that scene (knowing KyotoAnimation), like big brute U.S.A. (Arnold) about to get over on "poor innocent defenseless" Japan (Tsukasa)?? :)

The Director of Lucky Star changed after the first four episodes. After they were not bringing in enough viewers they had no choice but to do so. Eventually the anime got more popular and popular as it progressed and now is extremely loved world-wide. But I am an easy audience so I found something to love in all the episodes.

Episode 1 was okay. There was a lot of cooking hints in it I'll give it that. I also liked the part where Kagami was ill and Miyuki told her that Konata acting so cheery and silly was her way of showing that she cared. It was really cute.
