Everyone's first vector/trace looks a million times better than mine. :p
Anyway...
Her face looks like that because it's pretty much made of a single color. It has almost no shadows, wich translates into a somewhat flat appearance.
I run into the same problem with my traces, btw. (specially with the Kagami one >_< !!)

Yeah, God of War II was brought over by Kyoto Animation in fact, and was made 100x better than the original game, since Kyoto Animation is better at everything than any other company ever. Even though they don't make video games they managed to add 20 extra hours onto the game, they touched up the graphics so it now looks like a PS3 game, The Icarus wings were replaced by a backpack with wings that allows you to fly instead of glide when powered up fully, and they added Haruhi, Ayu and Konata in as a secret bosses. Man I wish I could play Kyoto Animations superior version since they managed to make SCEA's look like crap like every other company below their heavenly grace. In fact Kyoto Animation should make God of War III, not SCEA.

This piccy actually makes me feel quite sad... *hugs Kagami* As a character, she's very cute but it's just so completely OOC to turn her into a Playboy bunny... nice artwork, but tasteless IMO. There are a couple other pics that have been posted that have made me feel the same way.. :(

People who create characters will tell you that "respect for the character" is as important as respect for the creator.
Frankly, part of my assessment of whether a piece of fan art "wins or loses" depends on whether they're portrayed in-character or not. The bunny outfit doesn't bother me so much but I'm mixed on whether Kagami would actually cosplay like this (unless it was for a boyfriend). Kagami would be either hyper-embarrassed or be hyper-irritated with the outfit (but not necessarily the pose). There are official pics of her wearing bunny-ears I think.

You're posting "joke translations" of the comic. That certainly isn't in the comic and if I get a chance, I'll scan/post the original (if I can spot it ... a lot of strips look alike in visual).

I agree with you, and I would be stunned if this image (and images far, far worse) would bother the character's creators one bit. In fact, I would be surprised if the anime's creators aren't extremely happy about the doujin/fan artist attention their characters are getting. It's a message and a happy one at that.
As someone who's created (with lots of love, no less!) original characters, having given them names and personalities and all, I would be very, very appalled if I ever found a fan "misusing" them, and I would go many lengths to contact the fanartist and request that they take the image down. I have something of a parental love of all the characters I create... But I know, that's just me.
I'm sure most mangaka are used to (and maybe even like) their characters being thrown into very OOC, "sexy" poses. It's a compliment that fanartists want to draw their characters, I know. It's just also very tasteless, IMO.

You have no idea how many fake impressions of Lucky Star this strip gave to people. Most of the angry blog/forum posts and comments I've read ranting about Lucky Star episodes 1 and 2 have cited this possible yuri coupling as a reason to try the series.

I think, however, that we should avoid imposing our values on this community. They have their own traditions and history. Work far more provocative is done out in the open, and the original creators could, if they were so inclined, go after the people responsible. I believe it has happened, but they tend not to.

Many, many creators started out as doujin/fan artists. Quite a few continue to do fan art.
A couple of things have become very obvious to me over the last couple of years, and I think they should be obvious to anyone who spends a fair amount of time in AnimeSuki's image threads or on any image board for that matter:
The line between "doujin/fan artist" and "professional illustrator" is often blurred to the point of nonexistence.
The line between "original designer of beloved anime characters" and "digital pornographer" frequently doesn't exist.
Animation companies are also active participants in this sort of thing. Just think of how many quasi-official, provocative Haruhi pinups we've seen from Megami and NewType magazines. (I just used Haruhi as an example. The list of anime girls dressed in bunny suits, exposing their underwear, bathing, etc., is a long one.) The Lucky Star characters have been treated a little differently in magazines so far, but Kagami has become a bit of a sex symbol in the doujin community. Again, I doubt this bothers Kyoto Animation or the strip's creator.
Edit: I intended my use of the word "pornographer" to be value neutral. I'm not trying to insult or pass judgment on anyone. :)

I think my final take is that the pic of Kagami-bunny is probably something she'd *like* to do (maybe as a glamour shot for a boyfriend... if she had one) but since she's publicly a "good girl" she'd just die if something like that ended up on the Net. :)
I don't mind tasteful sexy but I don't have a lot of love for the explicit OOC material. Tastes vary. I know a few authors that take fairly extreme measures to shut down "hentai" of their characters... and others that are happy with anything.

Chances are that Kagami's face and her tsundere factor are motivation (or turn on's) for dojinshika's to ever qualify her as a sex simbol. Heck, the moe factor is so complicated...

Basically, she spoke in the wrong Japanese character encoding (the ones I know are ShiftJIS and ISO-2022), and Tsukasa informed her to switch to unicode UTF-8.

Not quite as freaky as my morning look Honesty, I sometimes walk into the bathroom and scare myself with my own eyes. It's the patented family morning glower that if you see it you may already be dead, unless you are a Maddeaux (that's right I'm comfortable with using my surname in public).
Anyway, the freakiest picture so far was the spiral of doom Konata that brought up unpleasant memories of a nightmare that haunted me as a child. The chills down my span were quite immense upon seeing that one.

What would be ideal (I'm not asking since i know how time consuming this would be, just stating...) would be if it were possible to combine the pictures with the functions. So that some of the pictures would have a folder icon in the background to reflect that they are for a directory. And perhaps an empty and full chocolate bun for the recycle bin, and the image of Kogama to be the My Computer replacement. So that the pictures ornament the functions, not replace them.

I was checking 4-chan the other day, and noticed a dude there asking for Akira wallpapers. He said he had found only one so far. (the one I made, btw)
After checking this thread from top to bottom, I realized that there's in fact only one Akira wallpaper posted here!! :twitch:

I know a lot of new people go plowing through threads from the first page to the last. I suspect a lot of people come in on the last page and maybe -- maybe -- check out the page before. When people are in a chatty mood, the page can turn quickly too. (Except when I want it to. Like now!) :)
Right now, with the exception of Touhou, there is probably more Nanoha fan art being produced than anything else. I see A LOT.

Okay, seriously, Live-action means (to me at least) a camera pointed at the actors. I love watching voice actors do their work since most of them actually move as the characters would.

The color you used to outline her hands and face is not the best, IMHO. It looks to similar and doesn't create a good contrast with the color of the skin.
I often dont like to use colors as they appear in screencaps; It is then that I turn to fanart or any other HQ stuff to get the colors I am looking for.

That's her tongue?! Hmmm... it looks so much like the pink mouth opening you get in anime that I thought it was her mouth warping. Maybe that's something they can touch up on the DVD release, because it looks to pink to be the tongue. A tongue is usually much redder.

If you want, you can always bring it into photoshop and try using the fill command with a very low tolerance.

Outstanding ... I love it when people can do characters in their own style and its still clearly the character. Excellent proportions/anatomy, nice expression you captured on her face. Hmmm, you might tinker with her eyes more..... hard to explain but she needs a more wide-eyed innocent "looking at the world" expression.
The right hand looks fine to me (the fudges just make it look like its in motion).... come on... give the left hand a shot :)
Actually I speculate she's *harder* to draw than Konata because of the subtleties.... nice work but so far it seems "90%" Tsukasa in my worthless opinion.

Tinkered her eyes and her mouth a bit, to make it more 'innocent looking' :D
Subtle... I had to put them next to each other but yes the eyes look better.
There seems something... like a pixel too much to the right about the mouth and her left eye... but that may just be my misinterpretation of perspective.
Can't wait to see what you can do with Kagami, should you try to take a shot at her :) ;) .... I wish the hell I had kept up my drawing but it went by the wayside decades ago.
I'm glad to see there are more fanart pics since I last came by... and comments on them, as well. It's a bit disheartening when there are no comments on a pic you poured effort on; critiques are almost always welcome and desired by the artist (as it not only helps them get better, but it shows that people actually *did* see their art).
I'm being mean to myself... I'll post pics soon.
(Man, it's always scary coming back to asuki if I've been gone longer than 12 hours... there's about 10 million posts I need to catch up on, still.... I know that's a good thing though. XD)

I tried ARIA style (she'd be from Orange Planet, of course ;) ), then I also tried to "Flonne-ize" Tsukasa (anyone here a Disgaea fan?), but that didn't work... I think it's because Tsukasa has such a generic look to her that she isn't recognizeable anymore if she's done in a different style unless she's colored or is wearing the clothes she wears in L*S. By comparison, Kona is really easy to spot in different styles - she's got that mole and the cowlick, plus the ankle-long hair.
I'll post what I've done of Tsukasa (later) to show you what I mean... you won't recognize her. :(
As for what's difficult... I find girl-hands and breasts to be a breeze compared to drawing GUYS. Guys have bigger hands and a bigger body all around... the shape of the arms and legs are the same, yet different... *sniff* I phail at guys. :(

You're not the only one that has trouble drawing guys. The difficulty of drawing a guy who looks good, shows a range of emotions, and poses well is why Disney's princes were such dweebs for many decades.:p

It's very common for men to have trouble drawing women and for women to have trouble drawing men.
I think it's because our hard-wired inclination to be effected by the appearance of the opposite sex has a subtle effect on our learned artistic ability to see things as they are rather than as we interpret them.

The hair shading and definition is excellent but it looks like some of the faces are giving you a bit of hell.

This was my first attempt at shading, so I'm really pleased. I figure I need to do something extra since I can't color. (Back to kindergarten for me eh?) :heh:

The Kona ones are the faces I usually do for chibi characters, so it was weird using it on a non-chibified char! Which faces in particular are giving you a hellish vibe? I'll go back and re-do them.

Woo! Yeah, it's so weird seeing Kona serious and, well, *melancholy*. I like the detail you added to the jacket, and that you added a scarf. I like that you added in shading as well... even for her forehead (that's one part I often forget). I'd say just watch out for Kona's hairline...

Haha, that's what happened to me when I started drawing anime, I can't seem to draw girls, at all. They always ends up looking like a feminine guys... :twitch: urgh. Good times...

That's a neat pose you've got Kagami in. :) One of the first things you might want to consider is drawing her in a light blue pencil first, then outlining your drawing in regular pencil. It would cut down on all the skritchy-ness and it'd be no problem if you were to mess up your initial light-blue sketch. Otherwise.. great job. :)

Thanks for the suggestion. Is it a special type of pencil, this light blue one? Like, used for drafting and whatnot? I used the burn tool in photoshop to enhance some of the pencil lines; most of them ended up really light due to the scanning.

I meant just a cheap regular colored pencil.. though if you have photoshop, there's no need - you can change everything to light blue and redraw lines right in it. (Though if you suck at using photoshop like me, maybe it'd be better to use the pencil. :heh: )
I've been using a special *sketchy* pencil.. I use four of them for all my sketches - 4H, H, B, and 4B. If you use a 4H pencil, the lead is hard and it comes out very light (and 4B is soft and comes out very dark), so alternatively you could use that instead of a light blue pencil... I just thought it'd be cheaper to get the colored pencil.
The nice thing about the blue pencil is that the scanners completely miss it (even if it isn't an official "scanner invisible" pencil --- it makes it easier to 'photoshop' it away).
So you can be as sketchy as you like, pick the best lines for actually penciling in (or even inking) and then the scanner just picks up that.

I have a finite amount of time in the week (like all of us :) )... I had to pick and choose my hobbies in order to fit in a career, marriage, and especially kids. Drawing just kept getting left out. My creative muses were satisfied with software development and medieval crafts for a long time, then home improvement projects. But otherwise, I've been volunteering at my kid's school to support math, sciences, debate, japanese language ... I've probably restarted my "sketching skills" 3 or 4 times now in my life. Perhaps I'll try again in a couple of years after #2 son leaves for college but right now time I'd use for drawing is being devoted to learning to read/write/speak japanese ( I do have some calligraphy brushes that I use to mangle kanji with ).

I use Sakura Pigma Microns, so I rarely have to worry about ink blots. I just have to make sure that the ink has a good few hours to dry before I start heavy erasing, or it smears.
Drats... I was sure that Vexx had some secret to stretching time so he could make the time to do anything and everything (as it does seem like you do EVERYTHING). At least drawing time is going towards something good... I can't argue against learning Japanese (haha, that's why I haven't been drawing near as much as I used to). Do you have anything from the last time you sketched?
The Sakura pens are great - I used them so much that they dried up quickly. I just didn't like using them to ink because they come out kind of like how my photoshop projects come out - with all the same thickness. For instance, if I use a .7mm tip, the line will always be .7mm. If I use an ink nib on a more traditional ink pen (the official name of these escapes me at the moment), the line will come out thicker if I apply more pressure, and lighter if I apply less pressure... kind of like how it is in manga. Another small complaint I have against the Sakura pens is that, if I remember correctly, they didn't come out in sharp black like what you can get if you have to dip a nib in "standard" black ink and draw (the Sakura ones came out a little faded black... like if you use India ink).

Any art-supply store should have blue lead for mechanical pencils, if you like using those. Otherwise even a normal light-colored pencil should work fine for roughing out a character.
After you scan it in, just use the eyedropper tool to select the color of the rough penciling, then have Photoshop highlight all of that color in the canvas and delete it. You should then have only your regular pencil lines left then. Works well for removing ruled paper lines if you did it in a notebook too. A bit of PS eyedropper/selection magic can also allow you to mask out your outlines, so you don't have to hand erase all the white areas.
I just got a new stylus for my tablet I bought and never use. (Lost the old one doh) So I will try to do some sketching and post it tomorrow or Sunday. I'm kinda like Vexx, though not as old (sorry Vexx ;p). I get pulled in so many directions for hobbies, and drawing always seems to slip under the rug sadly. I took a Drawing 101 class in freshman year of HS, but that was in like 1994 so... Since then I've drawn maybe 6-10 things only :( I just always find an excuse that I'm not in the mood/ready/feeling well, etc.

Hmm.. if you're having trouble with your hands shaking, err, I don't know if you already know this or not, but if you draw lines using your elbow (keeping your arm straight instead of moving your wrist), it will come out a lot smoother. Even for little lines, the results are better if you use your elbow. If photoshop works for you though, keep at it. :)

The blue pencil is only for laying it out. Like making the ovals for the face, and laying out the page. Then you switch to your regular pencil to actually do the sketch. That way you can just drop out all those blue lines, instead of having to spend extra time in photoshop with the eraser tool.

You definitely realize the Catch-22. In both drawing and inking, it takes confidence in your stroke. I would recommend just practicing sometime *pretending* you have confidence and do it anyways ;) Eventually with enough practice, it should start coming more naturally. Will also make cleaning it up in PS far quicker.
Also, if you want to ink by hand, buy a packet of tracing paper. That way you don't have to mess up the original drawing if you screw up, and the tracing paper still scans well.

Use the Brightness/Contrast command instead of the Burn tool. It will give you more control over how light/dark you make the lines.
And as was mentioned earlier, using a longer stroke or sketching with your arm instead of wrist should help clear up the ... sketchiness... in your sketch somewhat :) And there's always the eraser tool in PS if you want to spend time doing that. But IMHO I'd just practice more drawing at this point instead of spending time cleaning them up just to show us.

Sketched in about 30 minutes to an hour, here is a Episode 7 inspired Konata - in Marimite seifuku!

That's why it's important to layout the page first, so you can make sure everything fits right :) Not too bad though. Did you use a reference sketch for it, or try to do it all by memory?

Sketched in about 30 minutes to an hour, here is a Episode 7 inspired Konata - in Marimite seifuku!

She came out cute, regardless of the proportions being off. :)
@niwasatou: I think it looks fine from top to the bottom tips of the bow.... just restructure the figure and legs from the bowtips down.
(old tip: try lightly drawing her without clothes, then drape the clothing over that)

And to follow up with my usual line: My colouring fails and I much prefer sketching on paper.. heh I have no control over the mouse.
But I am actually quite glad this is one of the few times I find my own stuff 'viewable' as compared to my everyday 'eyesore'. Normally it doesn't take that long, rather 10 to 30 minutes at most. Just that I don't draw fanart often, so I'm quite slow at drawing existing characters (whether from memory or reference).

Hair looks good. The thing about skirts (mine suck too) is that you have to do a light, rough sketch of the skirt's general shape (most people stop there and just add the lines), and then layer it up with another sketch of the pleats, one by one. It's a painstaking process and very hard to get right (and by the time I get it right my paper's full of erase marks), hence why I avoid uniforms in general.
Another point for the shoes. I can't seem to get those to look right.

Your penciling style is weird, but you got the pose very well. I can't do sitting poses. Ever. My drawings of people almost always have them standing.
lol OK. Actually I did do a Kagami in Etna-gear... it's too bad she turned out looking like a whore. :upset: You can actually see a bit of her tail in the Tsukasa-is-Flonne scan. Ah... I thought I scanned the ARIA Tsukasa one but I can't seem to find it...
I've figured out how to get the scans to come out a little better... some of them still look terrible though. Sorry about this.

This is a lot better than you think. I, for one, cannot draw fingers for my life (thus the hands I draw are usually clenched), and I'm still trying to perfect hair. I also fail spectacularly at drawing cartoonish situations or even mild action shots (laughs to Konata mocking pigtails). Most of my drawings (hold on...*looks*...lets say all of them) just have people standing and looking to a distance.
Niwasatou, Shinku no Kage, and Claies: Thanks so much for the compliments. Hate to say it, but practice really does make perfect, yo. Keep trying new things and eventually it'll come. XD
I'm excited there are more Disgaea fans. If I talk about Disgaea in public (usually starting off with Flonne's "I'm an assassin! ...Nin nin!"), people just look at me weird. :heh:
