I really like the OP for this series. Not only is it crazy, lyrically, but the animation is great, too. I'm not generally a fan of OP/ED sequences, usually either the music or the animation puts me off, however with Lucky Star... KyoAni did good.
It disappoints me a little that there's no real ED, since so far it's just been that karaoke stuff, but that's pretty neat in its own right.
Still a little too early to give much comment on the general OST, but I doubt I'll be disappointed in how it pans out, unless it's like Haruhi and there's a million character albums and no apparent/obvious real OST released. -.-

All the music has been released for Haruhi. You just have to track down the CD's that came with the DVD's. But yeah, no official OST --- though it happens.

Is it just me or do these lines from the start of the opening make anyone else go :twitch:

It probably is just me then, I dunno I guess the "Catch and release part" after the first two lyrics made me think of all those idiots/jerks in highschool who'd work their way into the pants of the girls and then immediately dump em. *shrug*
The "catch and release part".. that really is weird, but I really can't think it to mean what you're saying. After all, the entire OP lyrics are random and crazy, just sort of thrown together to make a really catchy song. Hmm... Make that extremely catchy. *thinks about how I play it 500+ times a day* :heh:
The "catch and release part".. that really is weird, but I really can't think it to mean what you're saying.
Think of fishing, where you throw back fish that are too small so they can grow larger. I've heard it used to mean being attracted to someone who's too young to "catch", so you "release" them with an eye to hooking up when they're older (i.e. legal). Which makes this line extremely dodgy when sung by highschoolers! (Though it's still more subtle than the guy lurking behind the lamppost.)
And maybe this belongs in the merchandise thread, but the OP single is out May 23rd: CDJapan (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=LACM-4362) - Amazon JP (http://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/B000NO2BVO/)
It's currently Amazon's third top seller in music :)
IMO the a.f.k. translation and setup are just unappealing. But that still doesn't deter me from enjoying the song any, and I agree with Simon on the whole PoV on the "catch and release" part. Can't wait for the official OP CD release so I can buy it.

So I've been working on my karaoke to the OP. Which as a non-native speaker of Japanese is... interesting. In order to learn to speak all the words properly I hadta transcribe the lyrics. I mostly used AFK's translation, with some alterations from other sites as well as some googling. This is the current results:

There are a few places where I disagree with AFK's translation. The "catch and release" phrase is actually missing a syllable, the word tokkya blends into "catch" so that it's tokkyatch. Near the end of the first section it makes more sense for the word to be "ase!" (sweat) rather than "I say!", given the suggestive nature of the first stanza. Finally there's the big beast, the first line of the last stanza. I don't hear a fu or a ku in that line, it's just two syllables. seihin means products or goods (stuff), sanpi literally means a request for approval or rejection, but I think is simultaneously short for san pi-su, or three piece. So the item description and the question are inherent in the same words... nice trick that.
Seems like the whole first stanza is a jab at the industrywide practice of having romantic OPs to shows where it's really inappropriate, as well as mockingly throwing up some fanservice before getting to the parts of the song that actually tell us something about the characters. KyoAni is basically saying "We know we'll get the attention of all you otaku out there by putting pics of lolis in short skirts in front of you along with lyrics talking about sex, so here's some over the top naughtiness. Now let's move on to something that the show is actually about." The "catch and release" line, as someone noted before, is just way overboard. Heh.
Two RFI's here. First, can anyone who's read the manga identify the policewoman onscreen at the "cherry pie" line? She reminds me of Konata, both the mouth and the eyes. Secondly, I'd reeeeally like the original words for the bridge section, where only their legs are visible. In particular, Miyuki's lines about looking for her glasses. Romanization pleez, I can't read Japanese.

Somewhere in the original thread it's noted that "catch and release" means to take a fish out of water, then put it back in before it, um, dries out. Any way you look at it, it's a terribly suggestive line. too suggestive really, like KyoAni is deliberaly starting the song with something crude in order to mock all the OPs out there that are coyly suggestive and cutesy. As well as mocking all the pervs hoping for fanservice.
I disagree that the rest of the OP is all that random, if you look over the lines sung by the individual girls in the middle sections they actually say a good bit about the characters. Konata screws up her line (with an acdcidental H-game line?), and says she messed upsie-up in a close parallel to the "mixy-wixie" line in Ep. 1. Tsukasa says weirdish stuff, and the other girls tell her to cut it out. Miyuki is excited about ehr food, which leads to being overrun by Konata's uber-excitement. And later on the bit with scattering asteroids that crash and burn, reminds us that we're walking straight into a bunch of otaku-friendly material.

Not the kind of song I'd have on a playlist or a loop, but it doesn't have me scramblings for the fast forward key either. I let it play out before the episode and I like the cheerleading sequence very much big time (Konata's Magical Hair Growth Sequence).

She says "Megane! Megane wa doko desu ka!?". I think it's what I hear most clearly from that messy mixture of voices. If you wear headphones, Miyuki's first two lines are clearly heard on the left headphone. I can't get the last sentence, sorry.
I *think* I can hear some of Konata's rumblings, but I'd need to edit the sound to hear more. I also hear Tsukasa saying "Atashi ne,...", like she's starting a sentence.

I haven't seen the term, but I've seen that plot in numerous anime series -- an older man and a much-too-young girl obviously in love, perhaps even engaged, but holding off on marriage and/or intimacy until she's old enough to handle it. There's a really controversial example in Card Captor Sakura, and a relationship of that nature is one of the major plot points in the legendary shoujo dramedy Marmalade Boy (blowing up in the faces of those involved with devastating results). In both examples, fans tend to conclude that the older guy was a bit of a jerk.
Kona-chan, of course, would know all about both these examples. And has probably written ecchi fanfics about both.

the OP song is just awesome :D the pace is fast but surprisingly the movemnts are being kept up with O.o i just love those sharp crisp moves of the dance and the way kona points up 3 fingers is just epix :3
as for the ED song...erm is there even one? (completely ignoring the karaoke)
the first line/statement of the song translated by a.f.k is unique tho...not everday i read slang and it works surprisingly :3

If there is one non-tokatsu song one would like Konata to sing for her third song, what would it be? I personally would like her to sing Macross OP just because I love Macross, but considering Kona's exhuberance I think Voltes V's OP would be best.
I mean the beginning of the chorus (Borutesu Faibu ni) and the end of the chorus (mou chikai) would be awesome to hear in Konata's screeching yelling voice. XD

Ugh I hate the Voltes V theme. What's one that is good, hmmmm..... Maybe Tobe Gundam... no too expensive and dangerous to do, not worth it.... hmmm.....maybe Tetsujin 28-Go. On the FMP one. I'm willing to bet if she had done the normal mangling of the FMP: Fumoffu opening there would have been riots. I get the feeling that the more otakuish fans of shows Kyoto Animation has been involved in have less of a sense of humour about matters than Kyoto Animation itself seems to have. It's alright if they do it with old songs that nobody remembers, but if its a series that involved Kyoto Animation (Even if the song is licensed out from Flight Master for this episode) there'd be hell to pay from the fans. As strong as Kyoto Animation has been made by its specific fanbase I get the sense they could turn on the company at the drop of a hat (which they almost did with the Kanon ending apparently).

I've said it before in the episode thread, but I love Aaya's singing in the ep3 ED. Her voice is thin, but expressive and in tune. Check this blog (http://animedesho.animeblogger.net/?p=2458) for some shocking but amusing news about which singer Aaya likes (hint: it's Avril), with photos and text from Aaya's blog. ...On the FMP one. Not that I disagree with you about the possibility of the fanbase turning on KyoAni. That happened to some extent with episode one. Maybe some people are not fans of KyoAni so much as of that highly detailed animation style, and when they didn't get it, they were disappointed. But the show itself seems to be winning people over, on its own terms.

As is often the case with us, it seems, I must disagree with Kaoru. Hirano does get the right notes (with an acceptable amount of error), and does put expression in it...but it's still a mediocre singing of "Sore ga ai deshou" because she can't lay off the vibrato for even a moment. This is overall a weakness with her method because for changes in pitch, she doesn't get to the correct frequency quickly...she has to oscillate her way there.
I'm quite okay with *any* amateurish qualities in the singing since this is supposed to be a karaoke session of high school girls --- not "Japan Idol Super". Frankly, most VAs are only professionally "passable" in their singing -- after all, they were all hired as multi-talents (act, dance, sing, spokespeople, etc). Lots of people in Broadway do quite nicely with "passable voices".

ED collection (http://www.animate-shop.jp/ws/commodity_param/ctc/cd/shc/0/cmc/4063673/backURL/http%28++www.animate-shop.jp+ws+main) on the way, to be issued in July. Since it says "dorama," I suppose they'll string it together from the show, with maybe extended versions of the songs. Not sure.
Vexx is certainly right about seiyuu, and that includes Aya. My favorite singer in the world is Onitsuka Chihiro, who is (or at least was) superior in all respects to any seiyuu singer I know of. And Wavedash is right about the technical points he mentions, although I would of course put it a little differently, lol. But those are, within limits, immaterial to my own enjoyment. I'm getting sweetness and some feeling, as well as real melody. As in some of her seiyuu work, the fragility of it all is also attractive.
I have said before that I think originality is overrated. I'd say the same for professional skill. I think seiyuus who are "professional" can sometimes be boring, and the same goes for singers. I don't know if Kotoko is considered skillful, but I find her work quite boring and unsubtle. Of course, the same goes for bands. Garage bands can be more enjoyable than top pros.
Some VAs put a lot of passion into it even if they aren't "that great". Hirano sings with a great deal of passion.
One of my favorite VA-singers is Asakawa Yuu (Motoko:LH, Sakakie:AzuDa, many others). She put out several CDs with a band that has some surprisingly experimental rock on it rather than the "usual sugar pop talent contest singing".
I like some of Kotoko's stuff (her Tweeny Witches tune and some of the stuff on ~Hane~) typically the harder-edged tracks.
One of my favorite non-VA singers though is UA. She does a wide variety of blues, beat music, rock, avant-garde, and some beautiful little tunes. I will also admit getting attached to ZONE (like the Monkees only cuter) and a terribly guilty pleasure in the euro-jpop group Hinoi Team (doomed... I'm doomed).

I agree with Vexx on this one, although for slightly different reasons. Not only is the ED not supposed to be a real song, it's actually part of the show. Thus it would be wrong if Hirano sang as well as she can, and it'd be even worse if she sang like some operatic goddess. IMHO it's *supposed* to be bad, it's a regular girl overenergetically trying to karaoke cheesy old songs. It takes more skill to do that as a VA than merely singing something cleanly and properly.
I love how the ED and OP both poke fun at conventions of generic OP/ED sequences. The ED basically says screw it, let's have the characters trying to sing instead of actual singing. And the OP, well where to start. First we're given weirdly inappropriate suggestiveness, but isntead of the usual gratuitously pseudo-romantic goo, we're slapped upside the head with it like the sorry loli-loving fanboys we are. Then there's the character intros, where they rap with lines that make sense to the chars, while kinda sorta dancing to backgrounds of their real neighborhood. Instead of dancing to goofy backgrounds with lyrics that are totally irrelevant, like most OPs. Cheerleading is done really well (I've been making animated GIF's of parts of that, and it averages 18 unique frames a second which is kind of high). And quite frankly, you want bad singing? The last "darling darling please" at the end of the song is hair-raising. Yet it makes sense, because it's actually the characters singing. I just got done reading a bunch of people complaining that the jpop OP to Seirei no Moribito is a really lousy way to start an otherwise excellent show. KyoAni didn't make that mistake here.
I've been seeing a bit of complaining (mostly in the episode three thread) about Hirano Aya-as-Izumi Konata's performance of "Sore Ai Ga Deshou," saying it's "too good" for Konata to have done.
But as I looked in the credits, it seems that the OP is also supposed to be the girls singing in character [the OP is credited to "Izumi Konata (Hirano Aya), Hiiragi Kagami (Kato Emiri), Hiiragi Tsukasa (Fukuhara Kaori) and Takara Miyuki (Endo Aya)," as is each ED, despite it only being Konata/Aya singing].
From that, I'm taking it as a sign that all the girls are supposed to have moderately-passable-to-decent singing voices should they try. So I don't see it as a big deal that Konata was able to "flip the switch" from awful/grating to decent/passable.

The thing is that it felt OOC. If Kona-chan had been a really great singer at the start, it would make sense that she had continued to sing in a professional manner in the third ED. You could just tell Kona-chan was putting her heart (and enthusiasm, keke) into the first two ED songs, and she sounded like a normal person (well, as normal as Kona-chan can sound). It felt to me like Hirano Aya was singing as herself rather than as Kona-chan in the third ED. I guess I'm annoyed with the inconsistency in Kona-chan's singing when she is normally a fairly consistent character.
Do you think we'll have 2 ed soundtracks, one to cover the first half of the show and a second to cover the last half? The July release date seems to suggest this; I doubt they would want to spoil what the other ending songs were.
For some reason I'm finding myself somewhat addicted to a certain BGM. It's the one which plays at, for example, episode one when Miyuki was describing how she was dojikko.
There's something about easy-listening piano-and-trumpet pieces that seem to hook me. First "Itsumo no Fuukei" from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, and now this.

So if any of these songs are sung and butchered the show gets a Game Penalty from me unless they do one of their own series songs in an off-key fashion, in which case I'm dropping my protection ring around these songs. This is about the only way I can square things regarding the inconsistencies in the shows ending bits.

So if any of these songs are sung and butchered the show gets a Game Penalty from me unless they do one of their own series songs in an off-key fashion, in which case I'm dropping my protection ring around these songs. This is about the only way I can square things regarding the inconsistencies in the shows ending bits.

Yeah well Я делаю это не для любого еще, я делаю это для меня
What the heck happened with Ep 5's Chala Head Chala, I mean holy crap the others were bad on purpose, but this one is just outright painful on the ears. I think they went way overboard on the bad karaoke with this one such that I can't think of any reason why anyone would want to buy and listen to a single of it.
I have to disagree completely. :D
The original wasn't exactly sung by Luciano Pavarotti, and relative to the original performance Konata didn't really do terribly until the "CHA-LA, HEAD CHA-LA" pieces... and while those were bad, they were ADORABLE. I just can't listen to it without cracking up!
It wasn't until this one that I had any anticipation of the future CD edition. :D

I'd probably have felt the same way initially were it not for the Sorega Ai Deshou thing. In fact there's no doubt about it, that I'd be totally into the spirit of the whole thing if it weren't for the fact that last time we heard Konata she had a completely different singing voice. Like you said though I'll let it slide this time.

I remember something about singing the song in the spirit of the anime. Everything except for that one came from an action show with testosterone-driven songs. Seems consistent to me.

I don't buy it, there's more to it than that. I'll believe it if I see them do another slow song by Konata that isn't from Kadokawa Shoten and is sung true to the opening. Aside from that, what makes an action song more open to complete butchering than a sappy love song, that's what I want to know. I can't help but accuse the writers of that line of seriously faulty thinking and reasoning. The kind that results from trying to find a quick fix to explain away conflict of interest (You know like the kind politicians give).
I don't think anyone will ever be able to convince me that "Singing the Song In The Spirit of The Anime" is a good enough excuse for butchering action openings, but being faithful to cheesy love song openings. I also think there's a huge distinction from what I see as bad karaoke versions of the action songs and a lounge singing performance of another. The disparity in overall quality is just to great to call both being in the spirit of the anime. To me if I were singing something like Chala-Head-Chala I would be aiming to sing on key and to do the song justice, just as much as if I were trying to sing a slow melodic song.
The message I got from their "Singing Songs In The Spirit Of The Anime" was that Action series are inferior to Romantic Comedy (Which as much as Fumoffu is from a larger continuity of mecha action is really what it is in its own right) and undeserving of an all-out effort. To me that was at least initially, a pretty huge insult to a person that happens to be a fan of said genre, so they might as well have been better off not trying to explain it through Konata's mouth at all, because it backfired horribly in my opinion and only served to upset me.
Lately though I've been wondering if I can blame them really. Recently I have said that Kyoto Animation/Kadokawa Shoten have become legendary to me for their lack of tact in dealing with people respectfully and honestly (including their own staff) other than their direct fanbase to the point where I'm becoming desensitized to it. That's why I'm willing to let it slide as the onus is on them to prove to me convincingly that they aren't playing favourites, not on my to buy their explanations at face value. Since they regularly fail to do this, I have nothing left to say and will just laugh derisively in their direction the same way I do whenever Bush does something ridiculous. To me their policies are more approaching sad and amusing than annoying as the days go by.

Oh that's not going to be good for what is destined to be a chart topper (I mean in the Popularity Sense the "Oh My God It's From Lucky Star BUY IT! BUY IT!, not the "Oh My God, This Song Is Very Well Composed And Sung Beautifully, Therefore I Will Buy It" sense). I should also mention that it sounds identical to how it sounded out in my head (since I've listened to countless anime openings I'm able to plug in the holes as to how it should sound in full verison just by listening to the TV Size). As catchy as it is it has no place on my playlist however as it gets annoying after even one loop.
As long as some trampling occurs on the street release date though it'll still be worth it.

Speak for yourself. Kona-chan butchering "Just Communication" or "Carnival" (from Blue Seed, a song about going out to the clubs hunting sex partners introducing a show about the battle against elemental evil) would be funny as hell.

Hmm, I though I had replied to this.
Anyway, Just Communication would require a massive technobeat in the background. I'd tolerate no less than disco lights flashing around outside that door in the ending.
Unfortunately the game Another Centuries Episode already has dibs on butchering Just Communication. Anything this series does would be a step up from that version.

I'm sure enough people will still want to buy it, if only to get the lyric sheet. (And how many will be disappointed to discover it's not a song about sausages?)
Then there are the uber-otaku who will buy multiple copies just to boost the rankings.
And I'm expecting next week's episode will be filled with subliminal and superliminal advertisements for the single.

It will be a slap in the face for Oricon if this song manage to reach No.1.

PV version would make sense. It has new lyrics, but it doesn't sound fluid at all. (There are various changes in the audio that can be heard.)
This is much better than HHY where the full version was absolute crap. I seriously doubt being a week early will hurt the sales that much, if not help the sales because people aren't worried about a repeat of HHY. (Then again, it seemed the Japanese weren't too put off by the full version.) Heck, its bizzareness should boost sales.
I'm sure enough people will still want to buy it, if only to get the lyric sheet. (And how many will be disappointed to discover it's not a song about sausages?)I would think by now everyone knows it is not about sausage.

I was thinking along the lines of the entire song being a cesspool of random uncohrent nonsense to the ears of the commoners....
If the sales figures generated is high enough, the commoners will like get to hear parts of it and wonder just how it manage to be ranked highly compare to other more....likeable composition.

Screw that protection list BS, I actually want them to sing City Hunter songs, You WA Shock or Heart of Madness, or Saint Seiya songs, or Space Adventure Cobra.
I don't care if you get a heart attack from it, but as a big time nostalgic I have the right to enjoy how they gonna sing it.
Hell, if they pull any Queen's songs, I'd die, of happiness. Not because they are LS or KyoAni characters but because someone in the anime world remembered how awesome were these songs.
I have rl friends who are as much of Hokuto no Ken fanboys as I am, who never heard or saw what is moé and want Konata to sing You WA Shock after hearing DBZ's OP.

Hahaha very funny, paranoia and what not....
@Sheba: It's called Ai Wo Tormodose, You Wa Shock is just something they scream during the song.
@MakubeX2: Why would it be a slap in the face, it has people's "goddess" singing the opening theme from a relatively (?) popular show. It's meant to sell mostly on the back of name recognition (because if I weren't told who was singing it I would have assumed it was chattering monkey's), in fact I'd be surprised if it wasn't a chart topper. All they need is to have her name plastered on it, let people know its in stores and watch a flood of dreary eyed folk storm through the store, maybe a few ritual killings for the last disc and then count their money.
Personally I'm interested in hearing what the off vocal version of the song sounds like (actually no I'm not and if they have any musical taste they'll never ever subject us to it on a single disc).
It will be a slap in the face for Oricon if this song manage to reach No.1.
Why?! a) Oricon is reportedly under investigation for being "rigged" and b) it's not like other anime theme songs haven't done well the chart before. For example, the No. 2 last week was the theme for "Kirarin Revolution."
I personally like the "surprises" in the Oricon chart. It's usually predictable to the point where I just need to look at the release dates and I can pencil in the Top 5. But once in a while you'll just get something out of the blue that does well on the charts for whatever reason.
BTW, does anyone have the lyrics (or an approximation thereof) for the full OP, yet? Japanese link is fine. Thanks in advance!

Something's been bothering me for a while now....just what exactly is the song used in the Ep06 Initial D parody? It has a sound characteristic of M.O.V.E. , the band which does the Initial D OPs and EDs, but this one isn't one of theirs, as far as I could see...

@Kenta
Been said before, but its Sera Fuku to Kikanjuu (Sailor Suit and Machine Gun), from the show of the same name. You can find the latest remake of it with English subs somewhere around the net, though I wouldn't bother since its one of the crappiest j-dramas I've ever had the displeasure of seeing. I can hazard a guess that the 80's movie is better, since the pacing was just horribly slow; thank God it was only 7 eps.

Try isolating the vocals from the instrumental part and you'll see why I don't think there will ever be a Karaoke version. Don't say I didn't warn you though. :eyespin:

1. You can't isolate the vocals from the music, since the vocals are the music. It's candy-pop rap.
2. Bought for name recognition? How about every second #1 hit anywhere in the world?
3. As poetry, the words are better than most pop songs. Just complex and bizarre, both in meaning and in syntax.
4. I just listened to the full version, sans images, and there is no reason except anti-otaku prejudice for Oricon to be embarrassed about this song becoming #1, when I think of other songs that have hit that spot. This isn't like them, but it isn't worse, just totally different.
There are quite a few photos from the shops of Akihabara in this post on Akiba Blog (http://www.akibablog.net/archives/2007/05/rakisuta_070518.html) about the campaign (click photos to enlarge). And here are photos (left) of a poster of the words, and (right) of a display saying the aim is to get the OP to #1 on Oricon and for this store (Toranoana main store) to sell more copies than any store in Japan. It also says they're taking orders for the first DVD:
http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/8110/20070519102acvt9.th.jpg (http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/8110/20070519102acvt9.jpg) http://img242.imageshack.us/img242/4284/20070518507ng9.th.jpg (http://img242.imageshack.us/img242/4284/20070518507ng9.jpg)
I don't think the proponents of the campaign are thinking of profits for KyoAni (of course the shops are thinking of profits for themselves), I think it's more like supporting a sports team: you want the team you support to win, and this is an aspect of winning. I have to say, however, that I will be amazed if they get anywhere near #1. The SHnY OP only got to #5, and my sense is that that was a much bigger hit than this show. But we'll see by next Thursday.

I guess it's the same as campaigning for Oscar's. I'm going to be honest and say I'm not entirely sure what kind of standards Oricon has though, but actively campaigning somewhat cheapens things in my opinion, just like with the Oscars (Where it does have an impact). All I can say is I have no idea why Lucky Star is Akihabara's pick, I can understand the drive for profit, but I don't understand the reasoning behind picking a specific song to push. I don't think there's anything to be embarassed about at all other then perhaps an overly aggressive market approach. I would think the girls who sang the song would vastly prefer their song to achieve success on its own and land where it lands on the charts rather than have their song lifted by a massive campaigning effort. I would feel a bit guilty and unsure of myself if I were the artist. I wonder if people truly enjoyed my music or only bought it because they were told its what everybody else is doing. Then again I guess that #2 point is the answer again. This is one of the reasons I never paid attention to music all throughout middle school and high school, the popularity always trumped the musical effort itself and I just tended to avoid any and all conversations about music for that reason. I listened to what I liked, I didn't buy based on the artist or any industry push, but on my enjoyment of the song, and I stayed out of the loop. Still do.
Also the words are hysterical and unusual, but the tune is actually the key to a song for me. Tune and Beat are most important and they are only augmented by the lyrics. A song with a good tune will always be popular with me and even more so with good lyrics, but a song with good lyrics and an awful tune will never be a favourite. I think this song lands somewhere in the middle, funny lyrics and decent tune, but not playlist material. A lot of J-Pop falters in this regard be it both a crappy tune/beat and cliche lyrics or an alright tune/beat and crappy lyrics. Lucky Star is a probably but one step above in each category in my view.
Oh and popularity pushs have always been a huge huge turnoff for me. Having the same product advertised to me constantly from all directions is one of my pet peeves, so I tend to come on a little strong when one of these types of campaigns emerges. I just don't like that style of aggresive advertising at all. Sometimes I also wonder if those Lightspeed Brief ads from Futurama that advertise to you in your dreams are even a decade away let alone a millenium. That last sentence was a joke by the way (I hope).

I wonder if there was any trampling. Somehow I imagine fistfights breaking out and a grab fest with one guy triumphantly grabbing the CD with a ripped shirt and pants and taking off out of the store with a police officer and several others chasing after him, because he forgot to pay in his attempt to get away from the other buyers.

Japanese otaku may save their aggression for 2channel, lol.

Regarding the first image, the lyrics shown there appear quite different from the ones that were quoted here a couple of posts back. Given that this one assigns different kanji (rather than katakana) spellings to each "fuu", and "Darlin' Darlin' FREEZE!" instead of "please" or "furii", I assume that the image is of the correct official lyrics while the posted transcribed one is a "gisting"?
It would be nice to finally get the real lyrics from the CD liner notes rather than go by the 2ch consensus transcription... :D

Well, what you're seeing there is not two different kanji, but the repetition of a single one. a.f.k. understood that part as "I say (uuh!) I say (uuh!)", when it's actually saying "汗(Fuu)汗(Fuu)” ("ase [fuu!] ase [fuu!]"), which roughly means "sweat (fuh!) sweat (fuh!)". The little 々 symbol you see there actually indicates a repetition of the immediate previous kanji.

The image is the official lyrics. The one that was pasted above was the 2ch guess.
I'm quite happy to have the OP single, with a 4:18 full version, and most importantly, an off-vocal version. Yay! Excellent stuff.

The c/w song "Kaeshite Knee Socks" is pretty fun.
The opening is pretty cool. I still dont have the CD though
Oh, If you want the Translated Lyrics I have it. But only enough to fit the TV Version

Off-vocal is actually quite nice. I've put it in rotation.
I'm glad they're doing the karaoke skits instead of an ED theme, since Kaeshite Knee Socks would probably have been the ED and I don't like it at all.
I wonder if all the songs on the OST will be about clothing?

I'm actually looking forward to getting some of BGM from the series. I find them really catchy...particularly this one simple piano piece (it plays every episode, but it's around 4:17 in episode 5 when Konata and the gang run into Yui).
I always find myself humming that piece when I'm reading or studying. It increases my powers of cognition by a factor of 40%. :p

Something's been bothering me for a while now....just what exactly is the song used in the Ep06 Initial D parody? It has a sound characteristic of M.O.V.E. , the band which does the Initial D OPs and EDs, but this one isn't one of theirs, as far as I could see...
reposting someone's question. i tried, but ultimately my resourcefulness failed me. :(

If anyone's interested in the sales saga for Motteke Seeraafuku, akibablog has an article (http://www.akibablog.net/archives/2007/05/lucky_star_070523.html) (several, actually) in Japanese on the subject, with photos of the action at stores in Akihabara. There is an online campaign by fans to get enough copies sold to have it reach #1 on the charts.

There are some "sold out" signs and one store clerk said it seemed to him to be selling better than HareHareYukai (the SHnY ED), which got to #5 last May. At Toranoana, which had proclaimed its determination to sell more than any other store, apparently about 8 out of 10 people coming to the cash at 7pm Tuesday were buying a copy. The CD is officially released on Wednesday, so of course it goes on sale Tuesday. Of course.

Still don't understand why the fans are doing this. Are they getting paid to raise awareness or something? Personally I would be asking for money. I can't think of anything I like that much to take time out of my day to actively promote it for free. If it's for some sort of cause, like the proceeds are going to charity I'd consider it, but if I'm just helping already well off record companies make profit for themselves, why bother?
The classy thing to do here would be if it does hit #1, set aside something like 20% of the profits for some sort of charity. That would be a good reason for someone to work towards getting it in that slot. They can feel good about themselves and about the show at the same time.

PHEW! :D Thank god for that!
@Ascaloth: I'm only a year older than you so I don't think there's a generation gap. I know I act like an 80 year old bitter as hell angry old man, but I'm only 22.
I prefer to say I devote myself to the series of the "When". Whatever I like it doesn't matter what decade it comes from. Though I tend to find more stuff I like in the 80's and 90's. Still the first decade of the 21st isn't even close to being over and things are booming right now like they haven't been since the 80's.
Let's have look at the decade tall of my Anime Music Collection:
2000: 143 songs
80's: 185 songs
90's: 279 songs
70's: 30 songs
So while the 80's and 90's win, the 2000's are catching up and since there can never be another song from the 80's (unless I find buried treasure) there's a good chance the 2000's could surpass it.
And Yes I did just spend about 40 minutes tallying my collection.

Welcome to the consumer culture. Next time you're at a mall, count the number of brands, sports logos, and names of rock/rap bands you see on peoples' t-shirts and baseball caps.
They devote their whole lives to the current fad......

That's one for the oxymoron hall of fame.
I'm rather hoping they make a full-length video for the OP. It really doesn't have the same impact without the animation.

I dunno, more of a tautological expression?

Somehow the full version doesn't seem as succint as the original OP, even if I listen to both without the animation. The rhythm doesn't flow as smoothly I suppose; it isn't as catchy.
Also, I'm trying to figure how to play the OP on the piano >_>. It's kinda impossible, I guess, but if any of you figures out how... heh! =D
The chorus is okay... But I think there's a rolling at the rapping part which I can't really get. ><

One guy bought ten copies (for friends, I hope), another bought twelve. The cost of a CD would be worth it just to be there for the carnival. Come to think of it, maybe the extra nine (I mean seven) copies were for hikikomori who couldn't stand the crowds, lol.
http://www.oricon.co.jp/
It scored #3 for the day. I don't see it scoring #1 for the week because the popular boyband V6 also released on the same day. I do see it possibly rising to #2, though, which would be outstanding for an anime OP not sung by a major artist.
The 2nd song on the single is cute. Something about knee socks.
The off vocal version of the OP is pretty weird. Can't wait for the fan remixes.

Well I did my part for the otaku campaign and went and bought it on Wednesday in the DenDen Town Animate. It was kinda funny that they were blasting it all over the store from mulitple directions, so it was on continual offset repeat. I must admit being surprised at the significant difference between the CD lyrics and the 2ch ones. The full version is also not as good as I thought it was going to be, but oh well.

It's interesting to learn how this works. The chart where Motteke was #3 was dated Tuesday. The #7 day is dated Wednesday, the day of the Akihabara "Motteke Festival." I guess it just goes down from here, but we'll see. The #1 song by V6 sold 16,600 units Tuesday and 9,900 Wednesday. Motteke sold 5600 Tuesday and the number wasn't reported for Wednesday. Only two of Wednesday's top ten songs were not Wednesday releases.
Whatever the case, getting as high as #3 is outstanding. I'll bet the seiyuus are thrilled to see their names so high on the charts (the singers are all given by character and seiyuu name). KOTOKO's Hayate OP was released the same day and "only" reached #6, then dropped to #9.
Fukuhara Kaori (http://blog.livedoor.jp/kaorin_f/) (Tsukasa) and Katou Emiri (http://blog.livedoor.jp/clovercafe/) (Kagami) both have pieces in their blog about the release.
V6, the #1 song's artists, are, have been around for 11 years and have had 31 singles and 9 albums. Of those, 15 singles and 8 albums have reached #1. So I guess they're fairly popular.

Hayate didn't have a massive fan and industry campaign to promote it though so it had a handicap vs Sailor Fuku. They also seemed to have forgone a 1 Disc Per Customer Policy, which kind of sucks for people who went to get the disc and saw it was sold out because some guy bought like 12 of them in one go just before they got there. The buying frenzy seemed to outweigh peoples collective desire to enjoy the music.
Anyway I wonder if they ponder their place on the chart on the blogs. I'm sure they are happy, but I also wonder if there's any doubt in their minds as to whether it was the fact that people enjoyed their music or the Otaku campaign that earned them the spot.
Well I read the blog through a translator and it seems that they are just mentioning that it was out and they talked a little bit about the song from their end.

(Especially since there is always a smidgen of truth in what you say.) However, consider the facts that (1) Hayate is a weekend morning anime with (2) a top cast and (3) has the best-known anime singer doing its OP. In addition, (4) part of the PV was featured yesterday on Oricon's front page: in fact it may have had bigger publicity than Motteke. This all gives it a big advantage over a midnight anime with only one known cast member, and which elicited strong negative opinion when it first aired. The fact is that the excellence of the show has won a lot of people over, as has the uniqueness of the OP.
If I were the seiyuu, I wouldn't care a whit whether the otaku campaign helped me. I'd realize that my own performance in the anime helped stimulate the campaign, for one thing. And professionals don't have time for worrying how they succeeded, they are just focussed on succeeding. This is not some academic game for them, but their real lives. You often make statements of this kind, and they always seem completely beside the point to me, just a way of finding negativity in something positive. That also goes for your hint that V6 wasn't very popular. I noticed that you didn't comment on the stats I gave that seemed to indicate it was very popular, but just sought some other way of denigrating the LS seiyuus' achievement. I'm not saying not to do that, just saying that it makes me mad, lol.
None of the seiyuus has yet commented on the Oricon chart.

I would have looked at the stats, but there is not enough information to comment on, thus it's to early to tell. Once there are Wednesday figures for Sailor Fuku, I can look at them.
There's an even larger picture I want to look at, but maybe it would be best if I didn't as it might come across as negative. There are a lot of things I could be discussing on this particular subject that I won't because I don't think people will be comfortable with hearing them.
I will add just one thing and that is that we don't entirely know what stimulated the campaign. Reading the Otaku mindset as somebody said is very difficult and confusing, it could very well be that they enjoy the anime, but it could also be something else entirely to go along with that enjoyment that sparked the drive and gave it steam. (Damn, I keep doing this and there's no way to make it not look like I'm undermining things). As for the uniqueness of the opening, nowadays yes, back in the day though I can remember this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jimQoWXzc0Q). I like both this song and the Lucky Star song. I'm pretty sure Ultra Relax was the forefather of Hare Hare Yukai and Motekke Sailor Fuku.
If I were a successful musician though, I would ponder both my success and how it was achieved, but maybe that's because I think to hard about things. It's not that they don't deserve a lot of credit for scoring a hit, but I think there is a lot more to it that bears discussion. Though maybe I oughta do a little Les Thinkin and a little more relaxin.

Another blog (http://blog.livedoor.jp/ustan777/archives/50936269.html) suggests that, as FatPianoBoy said about HareHareYukai, the lack of stock contributed to the drop in sales from Tuesday to Wednesday. We'll see how things go tomorrow. Over the past couple of hours, Motteke has been the top, then the second-best seller on Amazon Japan.
The Akiba Blog post says that Motteke sold 4000 units in two particular stores in Akihabara on its opening day, almost double the 2200 that HareHareYukai sold.
A post on 2channel makes me more sure that KOTOKO's OP for Hayate actually got more commercial publicity than Motteke: the poster said he went to Karaoke and the Hayate song was available, but not the Lucky Star song. KyoAni seem to have mastered viral advertising, as someone said a while ago.
By the way, the KOTOKO PV (http://www.oricon.co.jp/tv/pvj/070523_05.html#movie), which is on Oricon's front page (http://www.oricon.co.jp/) right now, is pretty entertaining. Good cuts and good dancing. I'm not a huge fan of the singer, but she's okay, too.

I was sure that someone more knowledgeable in the Japanese language (I know zilch, or close to it anyway) was going to answer soon, but so far no answers, so here goes.
To those who haven't been exposed to it, ABC is the Japanese equivalent of the 'four bases' in the western world. Basically, its a euphemised way of describing how far one is in a relationship. My memory is pretty hazy on this one (I haven't come across it in at least a year or two), but IIRC it's exactly what the baseball one stands for except for leaving out third base. (A = 1st, B=2nd, C=home run)

Motteke is back up to #5 in the charts for Thursday (http://www.oricon.co.jp/rank/js/d/). So Tuesday #3, Wednesday #7, Thursday #5. The Hayate OP is down to #10 (so 6-9-10), with its PV still prominently displayed on the Oricon charts' front page (http://www.oricon.co.jp/).
DragoonKain3 is indeed correct... but I wasn't going to answer til I had some reference --- oddly enough, I haven't spotted a reference to cite outside of a book on Japanese slang.

Ah, thank you. Now I fail to see how that is *extremely* dirty (I don't consider the baseball euphemism dirty), but I guess that's just me.

Again, I don't claim I'm an expert in Japanese culture, but if kissing in public is extremely frowned upon (so much more so than in the west), I guess even talking about ABCs is considered 'dirty'. I hear they lean on the conservative side of things over there.
AND I should be really sleeping, since I'll be spending 13 hours more at Anime North tomorrow. >_>

In the Oricon chart for Friday (http://www.oricon.co.jp/rank/js/d/), Motteke Seeraafuku is up to #4. So from Tuesday to Friday, it has been #3, #7, #5, #4.
The Hayate OP is out of the top ten, and KOTOKO's PV is still on the Oricon front page.
Also, a new CD has been announced for August called "Motteke Seeraafuku Remix." As I understand the article on it, (http://www.akibablog.net/archives/2007/05/lucky_star_remix_070526.html) it will include a number of remixes of the song. The Japanese isn't totally clear to me, but I think it says there will be six tracks, including at least one remix by a well-known remixer, along with a number of parodies. Maybe someone with better Japanese can confirm from the article.
There are links (more or less in English) to some good remixes on that article page.
I received word from a goon yesterday that another goon on SA forums (scary place, it is) is working on remixing it as well.
I'm very interested in hearing the parodies. :)

If they want it to hit number one, this is the point where they should start buying indiscriminently. V6 is falling and if each person buys like 5 more copies today, regardless of whether they have one or not, they can push it into the top slot. You only need 1000 people to buy 5 copies and it's there.
Although this 桑田佳祐 guy apparently released on the 16th and he's still selling strong. Who is he anyway, anyone know?

Here is the PV (http://youtube.com/watch?v=zcaova6wKyI).
I don't think Motteke can hit #1, but maybe: it sold 2750 copies Saturday, compared to 3000 for V6 and 5000 for Kuwata. Maybe a possibility of #2 for a day, #3-4 for the week. Anyway, the comeback seems fairly remarkable, as if people have actually bought it after hearing it on TV or radio. I seem to recall that Hare Hare Yukai started at the highest place it ever gained and never got back to it.
EDIT: It's down to #7 in the chart for Sunday (posted Monday).

I'm not sure how this works, but the Oricon site's news (http://www.oricon.co.jp/news/rankmusic/44985/) says that for its first week, Motteke Seeraafuku has placed #2 on the weekly (as opposed to daily) singles chart, with sales of 66,000 units, only 2000 behind the first-place song by V6.
Not #1, but a tremendous achievement. Posts on 2channel claim that it is the highest sales ever by any anime-related song in its first week:
GSD (Fiction Junction Yuuka) 45,064 2005/9/22
Nanoha StrikerS (Mizuki Nana) 38,538 2007/4/18 #2
Code Geass 24,494 2006/11/8
Mahou Sensei Negima 45,324 2005/5/11 #4
Haruhi ED 34,881 2006/5/10 #5
Kotoko's Hayate OP came in at #7, with sales of 20,000, which isn't too shabby either.

And I was wondering why my post concerning this on the Merchandise thread was being ignored. :upset:
Looks like the distributors learned their lesson from Hare Hare Yukai (Haruhi ED) selling out too rapidly and produced plenty in reserves just to allow the song to last that little bit longer in the chart.

So the secret to success is the dance opening then. Get ready folks because we are about to see a whole lot of fidgeting and flailing in the future. I'm moving to Japan to compose my own dance opening (only this time the girls are in bikinis in the video), get 2channel all fired up by using my legendary charisma and get rich and smash all the records. I can see it now, the universal formula, the equation.....for success.... hold on it's coming to me....Lolis.....dancing....a popular Seiyuu....hnnngg....focus...focus...a....n....d... ...power of suggestion towards consumers! *Takes off out the door so fast it creates a wind tunnel in the hallway* I'm Off to Japan!
Seriously though, something doesn't seem right about those numbers, I was counting 5000 copies a day usually at it's peak and if you multiply that by 7 you get about 35000+ maximum (but you'd also know what it was lower than on the day's it was below the #3 mark and it didn't report the sales). Unless I'm forgetting the numbers on the first day and they were so high it was crazy, but it's to late to go back and the numbers seem low now. I'm also wondering if they aren't reporting all the numbers sold on the daily charts because for yesterday the numbers seem really low. V6's number of units sold for the week also looks far to high compared to the number of units they were selling daily.

If Oricon works similarly to Billboard, the discrepancies could be the caused by limits in the reporting system. Billboard numbers are based on reports from retailers. Big stores can report daily because their computers can just dump figures to the reporting agency's computers. Smaller stores only report sales weekly because they need a higher degree of manual tabulation and are given to the reporting agency by phone or fax.

And I think the success of this OP shows that, whatever his deficiencies as an overall director, Yamamoto Yutaka really knows how to make OP/ED animations. Like everything else, it's not as easy as some might think.

You still can't discount the fact that he seems to know exactly what the people want and his guess payed off remarkably well. The way I see it he didn't comission some masterpiece of music so much as that he connected the dots as to what would sell (Aya Hirano and a Dance theme that evokes images of Hare Hare Yukai from the best anime of all time).
Also I hope he doesn't get lazy now that he's discovered the Key to Success and that he will attempt to evolve his style or try other things if he ever gets another shot.

I did give him his due, I said he called the whole thing perfectly and organized the song to make things work. There's no conspiracy here, just good judgement. I'm just saying I don't think the song is especially well-crafted.
A conspiracy theory by the way would be something like this...Ahem:
2channel representatives and KyoAni employees met in secret to organize the success of Motteke Sailor Fuku. The 2channel representatives promised to organize a mass buying frenzy and a campaign to influence the sales of the Single by posting about it on the message board and spreading the word among peers. In return KyoAni promised to give them a 10% cut off the top of the profits made from the sales of Motteke Sailor Fuku. As a result the sales of Motteke Sailor Fuku were far higher than they would have been otherwise.
That's a conspiracy theory.
Could I do better? I'm in no position to do better, I have no sponsor, no studio, no access to singers. I can't do jack all because I'm not even in the industry. I do know enough about these things though to give an opinion on them as I am a social sciences graduate who has studied business, economics, sociology and psychology. If you look at the culture of Japanese music right now, Idol singers are at the apex of popular music. Kyoto Animation had the most popular idol singer on staff for this project and knew exactly how to put her to use. Plus they knew how popular the Hare Hare Yukai meme was, so with a second chance at gaining a superhit they did another dance theme. They of course were right. Honestly, anybody could have seen the success of this song coming the second it was proposed if they looked at the popular music culture, the name recognition and popular association the song had in its arsenal, but it couldn't have worked as well without all three of those pieces. If you want to see this as a conspiracy theory be my guess, but I prefer to call it an examination of circumstances.

I've also never been biased against Aya Hirano. I actually think this is her best role ever and she's doing wonders with the character in a loli-moe sort of way, which I didn't even know she could do. At least in my opinion. I still think her singing needs work though.
There's also no anti-Kyoani bias either, just a dislike of the fanboyism that tends to surround their work.

Okay... now you're just grasping for straws.
Personally, I think the MSF sequence had a lot more thought put into it than HHY. Also, the lyrics are much better and more interesting (and freakin' dirty, if you think about it: "Bon-bon (= bounce-bounce, IIRC) cherleaders, let's get cherry pie! Ran-ran, welcome party, you've got a sensation; HIGH!) that HHY. I still maintain that, as much as I love Haruhi and often find myself humming that omnipresent jingle, I think it's popularity comes solely from being attached to such a popular franchise rather than its actual merit as a song.

Kaioshin, I think you are wrong in your judgment of how hard it is to do what Yamamoto did in this OP. You seem to think you could do as well if you had the resources. This is ridiculous, in my opinion. The commercial calculation piece of the puzzle was important, but would have meant nothing without the artistic creation piece. If it were so easy, other people would have done it since HHY, and they haven't. Of course, subtly suggestive lyrics never hurt, lol.
And although I agree that Aaya is not the greatest singer, that is impossible to judge from this OP, where the voices are pretty well indistinguishable, at least to me. Moreover, to say that Aaya is the "most popular idol singer" seems an exaggeration. She probably isn't even the most popular idol seiyuu, although that's conceivable right now.
I do have to say that I respect your openness to this show, despite it being by a studio you have a (somewhat justified) grudge against, and I appreciate that you are giving your honest opinions, although I disagree with most of them, it seems.

You know as much as I'd like to believe that artistic creation still plays a part in a songs success, recently that feeling has been all but killed as I've seen countless pieces that I've felt were incredibly well composed (such as Abingdon School Boys Howling) fall by the wayside to the latest song sung by a popular Idol Singer that sounds like about 10 other songs.
Basically it's like this. The state of music in Japan is that if you are Male Singer in the anime industy you're chances at success are crippled from the start unless you were an established act before the idol-pop trend kicked into full swing (like V6). Even the strongest effort is only likely to net you a middle tier success in sales and appreciation. By contrast even the weakest of efforts from someone like Nana Mizuki will result in mass popularity and lower high tier success in sales.
There's a definite gender bias (look at any blog or poll dealing with anime music and try to find a male singer name on the list where they are given a positive impression, you'll be lucky to find 1 in 50) in Japanese anime music these days and basically if you're a male anime singer, artisic creation honestly means nothing, if you're up against a female idol singer on the day of release, even if you've put together the best work of your life, it doesn't matter, your going to get smoked. However, if you're a female anime singer it can help somewhat. I guess in the case of Sailor Fuku since it was an all female effort the creativity probably had a bit to do with it (which is why it beat out Kotoko's Hayate song), but the market trends and the fact that Aya Hirano was singing (it didn't even matter that her voice was indistinguishable) had a lot more to do with it's overall success.
If at some point I even get the slightest indication that people even know who any of the male anime singers in the industry are, and that they appreciate their artisitic creativity this opinion will change. Until then though as far as I'm concerned artistic creativity means almost nothing in the anime music industry unless your an idol singer (in which case it's only enough to push you above the next most popular idol singer).

1. The #1 songs for the past four weeks have been by male singers. Stop thrashing around like this, coming up with new "dancing on the head of a pin" arguments about before and after some imagined trend began to justify your own preferences. You can't just invent things and deem them true without actually knowing.
2. Whether or not there is a bias against male singers, some songs by females outdo other songs by females.
3. There is always both a commercial and an artistic component. That you don't like the same songs other people do is beside the point. For me, the best OP/ED right now -- especially in terms of singing skill -- are from Hitohira, but I don't expect them to be in the top ten, since they are my taste and not others'.
4. In some Japanese polls, like the Animage one posted recently in the General Anime/Voice Actor thread, males occupied the top positions. We are far more interested in female seiyuu on AnimeSuki and 2channel, but Japanese magazines, etc., have the genders in much closer balance.

#1: Fair enough, but V6 is also one of the most established group in Japan so they had just enough of popularity to push them ahead to the top. As you said though it happened so maybe I was thrashing around a bit and here's why (This ties in nicely to the second part of your first point). I haven't justified my preferences, I never will be able to since they are so far outside the norm of the average anime fan that I'll always be getting "are you right in the head" toned posts from other posters across the internet. I should probably stop trying. As a result for the first time in a while I'm am genuinely upset and so I made my previous post in this thread without considering a number of things. Sorry.
#2: Yes.
#3: Yes, but I sincerely think the that the ratio is 80% commercial and 20% artistic.
#4: I've noticed regarding AS and 2channel, and well.... I hope someday that the male seiyuu and singers get a better reputation or at least people learn who they are. That would be nice.
My main worry here isn't that my favourite song didn't win though, what I'm more worried about is that as a result of the songs record breaking success, that studios are going to jump on the bandwagon and start a copycat thing going. Then, as a result my culture of anime music is going to be beaten back even further by idol-pop (which I only care for a very specific type of) and I'm going to have nothing new to listen too regarding my preferences for the next couple of years at least. Also if idol-pop isn't the current trend and the mainstream of anime music, what is? Whatever the case if it is indeed imagined and there isn't an idol-pop trend, there sure as heck is gonna be one now. As long as they allow some room for music that appeals to my taste though I couldn't care less.

I thought that Motteke would just drop out of sight after week one. Kotoko's Hayate OP has been gone from the top 20 since Monday. And Motteke started on Monday down at #8, then plummeted to #16 on Tuesday. But it has climbed steadily since than, and is suddenly back at #4 on the chart for Friday: #8 --> #16 --> #14 --> #12 --> #4.
Of course, you can put all this in perspective when you realize that the comeback single by Onitsuka Chihiro -- the best pop singer in the world, in my opinion -- never got higher than #5. She has been out of action for almost two years with throat problems, but I can't hear it in her new song, everyhome, which was released Wednesday, the same day as L'Arc-en-Ciel's Seventh Heaven and aiko's Shiawase.

Idol-related crap being at the top rankings is by no means restricted to Japan and its anime. Look at Western charts. I used to download English songs from what I see on the Billboard, and by about a couple months ago I stopped trying to filter out the good stuff from the bad. I'm not searching on Wikipedia on bands for 50 songs just to get those 2 that I actually like.
The part about corporate strategy, like any strategy tailored for a large population, is to exploit the idiots as much as possible. It's the same everywhere, and as long as the same big guys keep on producing, they can get away with a Top 10, guaranteed.
It will stay like this till the end of time, as long as there are idiots. I'll give you credit for questioning the trend, which marks you an intellectual. This is exactly why we music junkies don't take the mainstream and instead look elsewhere. Be proud of it.

Onitsuka Chihiro -- the best pop singer in the world, in my opinion -- never got higher than #5. She has been out of action for almost two years with throat problems, but I can't hear it in her new song, everyhome, which was released Wednesday, the same day as L'Arc-en-Ciel's Seventh Heaven and aiko's Shiawase.

Oricon looks to me to be very grounded in popularity, but I did find some opinion pieces written by buyer's on Amazon.jp which I can paraphrase here:
5 out of 5 stars: I've finally received my single of Motekke Sailor Fuku and the rhythm is good after all, dom't you think? Without realizing it is the type of song you can loop over and over again. It's the kind of song that is hard to get out of one's head.
4 Out of 5 Stars: With the lyrics card the song becomes more comprehendible. However, the buyer should be careful not to lose the card as without being able to deciphere the lyrics, enjoyment may suffer a bit.
3 Out of 5 stars: The style of the song is very fast paced and hard to understand, but looking a the lyrics card the overall message becomes much clearer. The overall amount of lyrics is quite extensive for the full version, but overall it felt like a completely different thing. It is not the easiest song to get used to, but after a few playthroughs it becomes more accessible to the average listener. The composer of the instrumental section could use a little practice and this section brings down the overall quality of the song somewhat. If the buyer is looking for a good instrumental piece of music they may be disappointed with this one.
2 Out of 5 Stars: The single is more of an overall commodity and those who are not of a fan of the TV Anime are not likely to be interested. The song count on the CD is somewhat low, compared to the usual 4 songs on the single, there are only three here. Once again if one is not a fan of the TV anime there appraisal is likely to be much lower.
1 Out of 5 Stars: This song is simply put, terrible. The lyrics are shouted out from the beginning to the end without any room for moderation and do not match the melody. The song is merely riding the popularity of the anime and studio. The song is truly offensive to hear and does not come recommended.
Okay it's me again. So these are some of the different viewpoints on the song that I chose to list based off a one per different ranking basis. Hopefully this gives a more qualitative view of the song as it is seen by Japanese buyers compared to Oricon.
I think I'll steer back towards topic.
Is there any word for character albums so far? I hope they don't commit the same faux pas along with the Haruhi character albums (repeating Hare Hare Yukai until they started changing styles around Vol.6). Motteke! Sailor Fuku would sound awkward when sung by a single person anyways.
Is there any word for character albums so far?.
The clostest thing at the moment we have to do character albums is the ED album (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=LACA-5658), which shall feature the ED songs we've heard so far --- though i'm not to sure where it'll end, and when a second ED album shall appear.

As of episode 9 Aya Hirano has done 6 of the endings while each of the other girls have done one each. That's 2/3 of the opening going to her. Honestly I hope they give the others more a chance soon, because I think they all have something to show. They are really starting to overuse Konata songs for the ending and if they want to sell any of the other character albums they should move to correct this. Tsukasa is insanely popular, even moreso than Konata it would seem, so they should probably start with her. If the other girls do get a chance it's likely to be Tsukasa again first as if she's not the most popular she's at least the second most popular and I think that's what they are going by when deciding a lot of things for the show.

Actually, it appears that Tsukasa is (or was as of 25 May) the only one of the four who is less popular than Konata among 2channel voters (http://etc6.2ch.net/test/read.cgi/vote/1177494639/), who are probably a better representation of core audience popularity than AnimeSuki is:
rank -- votes -- name
1位 118票 Kagami
2位 106票 Miyuki
3位 85票 Konata
4位 60票 Tsukasa
5位 32票 Akira
Personally, I'm not going to complain about hearing as many Hirano Aya songs as possible, but I agree that they should get the others singing more. I liked Katou Emiri's singing voice, the one time we heard it. But I'm not ready to second-guess the marketing experts just yet. Although I can't believe they're not going to go for character albums at some point.
I don't believe there is any real evidence that the popularity of individual characters is "what they are going by when deciding a lot of things for the show." The show was probably planned out months ago and each episode written at least weeks ago. If they were going by apparent popularity in Japan, we would be seeing a lot more Miyuki.
By the way, today was the first time I saw Hirano actually mention Motteke Seeraafuku in her blog (http://www.hiranoaya.com/cgi-bin/diary/sfs6_diary/), where she thanked fans for making it #2, and said it would encourage her to work even harder on her role in the show. I'm probably imagining it, but I have a strange feeling she's not happy with her performance. Maybe even she doesn't actually get the humor, lol.
About the #2 place, she said なんだか実感わかないです, which I don't quite understand. If someone else does, I'd love to know what it means. Does she mean she doesn't quite believe it, or that she can't figure out why, or something else?

She seems to be saying she's ecstatic, but doesn't think it's right from what I can gather. I get "Is it true, it just doesn't feel right". Maybe she knows about the campaign and harbours a bit of doubt in her abilities, modesty and humility and what not. With this she seems to be grateful and seems to say she wants to convert the support into something she can give her fans.
I'm not trying to detract from her efforts or anything, I'm just guessing as I'm not her.
I'm going to pay for suggesting this I just know it.:(

It's kinda she's so suprised the song got to no.2 that she doesn't really feel it right. So yes, maybe she's just showing humility and modesty.

In its second week on the charts (http://www.oricon.co.jp/rank/js/w/), Motteke Seeraafuku continues its amazing sales. It is in sixth place this week, with sales of almost 30,000 units, making a two-week total of 95,667 sold.
This is remarkable, considering that the high-selling Happy Materials, from the first Negima series, only had sales of 51,809 after two weeks, and Hare Hare Yukai, the Suzumiya Haruhi ED, had a total of 47,586 -- less than half what Motteke has sold.
By the way, the little video featured in the middle of the Oricon main pag (http://www.oricon.co.jp/)e this week is the new single by Chihara Minori (Yuki in Suzumiya Haruhi). Click on it to view the whole song in a larger viewer window.

Impressive. Things seem to be working out for it. 29,760 to be exact. It seems to have vanished from the Top 20, unless it's lingering in slot 21 waiting to pop back up again.

Wasn't Haruhi underprepared? They actually bothered to prepere for this one, they new it would fly off the shelves this time. In this case Hare Hare Yukai almost seems like a test and Sailor Fuku is the real deal. It pays to be prepared for an onslaught of customers. This gentleman still thinks neither are particularly outstanding songs, however he doesn't mind listening to them from episode to episode.

Your degree is actually a lot less light than the other things we talk of here. Congratulations!
I did click on Chihara Minori's PV. Not my style, to put it one way. I've enjoyed her singing more in other pieces.
Motteke was in sixth place for the past week. It was in ninth place on Monday's daily chart, but slipped out of the top twenty for Tuesday, the day fourteen of that day's top twenty songs were released. We'll see if the new releases sink below it in the days to come.
I will hardly claim it is great music, but it is a charming novelty piece, and quite infectious. It's one of the few OPs that I watch every time I watch an episode, but because of the combination of animation and music, not for the music alone.
Actually, the best music I've heard recently was six guys from two semi-pro bands playing at a party in someone's barn. There's so much good music around, but it's not always on the charts, and not always that easy to find.

Motteke is down to #14 in this week's chart. Not bad, still, with 10,000 units sold, so over 100,000 sold in the first three weeks. In Thursday's daily ranking, it's at #18, up from below #20 the day before.
Chihara Minori's single started at #20 in its first week.

Yeah Really. It's got all the support in the world behind it. On top of that, behold the power of the popular Idol Seiyuu singing the song, I don't think that hurts.
I know I've said this already, but I think a lot of the songs success owed itself in no smart part to popular association, and it had to do with the image of the song more than it's content (overall that is). There's good sales and then there's "Support Our Troops/Idol" mass rally sales of the L'Arc En Ciel, Nana Mizuki, those groups that always debut in the top spot on name alone etc. variety. I think the latter happened for the most part in this case. It's always been that way. Sailor Fuku had a one (Singer), two (Censored), three (Invocation of A Certain Other Similar Song) punch behind it in terms of reasons to buy it on top of being a decent piece of work, albeit one I think gets old rather quickly. And yes I'll admit I'm not terribly fond of the song (it's lost its lustre with me fairly quickly), but I've tried to leave that out of my analysis as best I can. I'm going to try to be more straightforward from now on, in a good way. Mine is just one persons thoughts anyway.
By the way Uninstall seems to be getting better reviews, but lower sales. It does not seem to have that Mass Support that some songs get. I think it has a 1 hit punch overall in the singer. Who cares though, since when have sales ever been the perfect indication of how people will enjoy a song anyway. I too happen to prefer Uninstall to Sailor Fuku overall. I like that Oricon doesn't just settle for numbers, but gives you some qualitive info to go on for the song to.
Anyway..... *Goes back to listening to Howling*

Yeah he wins for being the most efficient composer I know on the scene. His music IMO uses the right amount of subtlety in order not to obscure what's actually onscreen, no more, no less. And yet his themes that do require bombasticity, speed or otherwise impact convey it with ease.
A master of complimentary BGM, I'd say. I wonder if he took classes from Sagisu Shirou.
I'd say its a gift that his OSTs aren't meant to be listened to standalone.
Konata's theme FTW. Looking forward to the other versions too.

Otaku exploitation at it's worst.Well, they're only splitting it up across the number of DVDs they're releasing. It's not like they're 12 CDs sold seperately. Now, releasing the series across 12 DVDs would probably also be considered exploitative, but it's a pretty common pricing strategy for Kadokawa. At least it's 1000 yen/release cheaper than Shuffle/Karin/Canvas 2/etc., etc.

The choice falls to Kadokawa, the publishers; obviously, they're just trying to get people to buy the Limited Edition DVDs. Not saying that it's a good thing or anything, just... know who to blame. :heh:

Actually.... I do. But I modified it slightly quite a bit because the original score either didn't sound too right, or was too complicated. ^^''
Do you want it...? It's actually up on josh's anime sheet compilation, so you could just go there and find it somehow ^^.
That sounds like a BGM for the show itself, especially the rapping part...highly usable in a "wild goose chase" mood.
Didn't quite understand... Oh well; perhaps, I guess. o.O
Ooh, thanks, got it! I knew about Ichigo's site, but I'd never heard of this one before.
The beginning ("ai mai sansenchi" part) and other similar sections sound a bit off, but I really don't know what to change to make it better. This calls for experimentation. Thanks again, innominate. :)
Is the Yuki-chan vs. Asakura song actually out there? Loved the song, but I couldnt find a name.
The track you're looking for is on the second Suzumiya Haruhi soundtrack. You'll have a hard time finding the soundtracks now though --- they came with the limited edition DVD's.

I used to go Ichigo's too! I actually linked to this site from there. ^^
With reference to the bold, are you going to try playing it too ^^ Yays! But it's a pity I don't really know what to change either. >< I know it sounds weird, I think I need faster fingers.:heh:
Yeah I'm going to play. :) There's no way I'm recording it though - the piano hasn't been tuned in years. >_<
Okay I just finished a huge project and I'm going to use devote sometime today to something which has "interested" me for a long time... the real meaning of the OP.
The following is the first section of the OP, "Motteke! Seira-fuuku" in its official form. I will include my own romanization and a rough translation:
Line 1:
曖昧3センチ そりゃぷにってコトかい? ちょっ!
Aimai san-senchi sorya puni-tte koto kai? Chyo!
"The ambigous 3 centimeters; Are you asking me if this is sqeeze-worthy? Hey (you)!"
Line 2:
らっぴんぐが制服…だぁぁ不利ってこたない ぷ。
Rappingu ga seifuku... daa furi-tte kotanai Pu.
"Since the wrappings are the uniform, then the situation should not be too unfavorable. Pu (sound of laughing with mouth shyly covered with hand)."
Line 3:
がんばっちゃ ♥ やっちゃっちゃ
Ganbaccha ♥ Yacchaccha
"Go for for it and do it ♥ "
Line 4:
そんときゃーっち&Release ぎョッ
Sonto kyaacch & Release Gyo
"Like this Catch and Release, Gyo (sound of sqeezing tightly)"
Line 5:
汗(Fuu)々(Fuu)の谷間に Darlin' darlin' F R E E Z E!!
Ase(Fuu) Ase(Fuu) no taniai ni Dalin' dalin' F R E E Z E!!
"(due to the) sweating valley, (my) darling is frozen (from action)!"
My translation of the section:
(My) breasts, are you asking if they are sqeeze-wothy? HEY!
Since they're wrapped in (my) uniform, it shouldn't be too hard, Hee!
Come on and go for it!
Just do this catch and release, and sqeeze tight!
But the sight of my sweating cleavage has freeze my darling (from sqeezing my breats)!
Now when I first read it I really didn't want to believe that it's really about THAT. I thought "aimai 3cm" is reference to the length of skirt some school allow above the knees. But from the rest of the lyrics I've realized that the "aimai 3cm" is a reference to breast cup sizes. Cup sizes are a western import that's the measurement of the distance between the rib cage and the top of the breast in inches. Each inch is a cup size. Since each inches is about 2.54 cm, it's the ambiguous 3 centimeters. The play on aimai (ambiguous) also denote how cup sized fluctuate; some can gain a cup size by special bras (like Kagami's underwire), and some can subtract one by tight clothing.
So it seemed that this song, at least the first paragraph, is an ecchi description of a girl's flirting invitation to her boyfriend to sqeeze her breast, but the poor guy was rendered incapable of the actual squeezing due to the sight of her sweating cleavage. Poor guy, must be a virgin (otaku!?).
I know some of you might disagree with me on it, but based on my research this is what it meant. So if that's true, who's the song for? Not Kona or Tsukasa as they have no said sweating valleys to display, and I can't imagine Miyuki flirt like this. That leaves only Kagami, and we know she cares about her cleavage. I can't see a tsundere sing this song either; maybe to her dearest boyfriend... but ai, I don't know. Out of character. But maybe that's the joke. The song is totally over the top for THESE girls, yet we see them dancing and singing to it... and we all love it. So who cares. Sweating Cleavage FTW!

Sweating Cleavage FTW!Haha... well, yeah, I think the answer here is that it's for... the audience. :heh: A lot of the commentary about this song as it grew in popularity was precisely about how it's really quite saucy and racy, but couched in such a "catchy" tune. So yeah, I think it's poking a bit of fun at the show's otaku audience (precisely the type who'd "freeze") who, in turn, are eating it up.
It actually sort of reminds me of people who find themselves mumbling/half-singing lyrics without ever having thought about what it means. Then, when you actually read the words to them as text, they get flustered. :heh:

It's my bad... it should be Gyo... but according to my extensive research with native speakers, gyo can be a sound of sqeezing. :)

Ah, I'm glad to be corrected and learn something new, then!
An edit, to clarify: I didn't assume it was lack of knowledge on your part, I'd just assumed it was an oversight. The kind of thing I do all the time. :)

Thank you so much for nearly killing me by making me choke on my chips during uncontrollable laughter! :p

Where's the edited version of Noizy Tribe? It'll probably be on one of the 11 other CDs. Possibly on the CD accompanying the DVD with the episode where that song first played (episode 6/DVD 3?)
Hmm...very nice, AVPlaya. Can you look into the short segment right after the chorus? There might be something there too.

I guess I'll do the rest of the lyrics... it's one of those songs where you can show the entire song to a native speaker and they'll be scratching their heads. I'll have to pull from a LOT of sources to do it justice, so it will take some time. Boss just gave me a big project due end of month, so I'll see what I can do...

To round out the story on Motteke! Seeraafuku, the rankings for June are out and it ended up in fourth place for the month, with sales of 113,115 units in the month. Total sales are now over 119,000.
Not too shabby at all, since that already makes it the best-selling seiyuu single of the 21st century, according to a post in 2channel, outselling songs by Hayashibara Megumi, Fiction Junction Yuuka, and Mizuki Nana, as well as all the Suzumiya Haruhi singles.
Well that song itself is a reason for me to buy ... :) Cute and nice song.

Alright folks, Here's my translation of the lyrics to the world-shattering ED song, "Ore no Wasuremono":
『俺の忘れ物』 作詞・作曲/白石みのる 歌/白石みのる
"My Forgotten Item"
music/lyrics by Shiraishi Minoru
performed by Shiraishi Minoru
(意味なく手拍子)
(Meaningless hand-clapping)
WAWAWA
WAWAWA
WAWAWA・・・
WAWAWA忘れ物 俺の忘れ物
wawawasure mono, ore no wasure mono
"wawa the forgotten item... the forgotten item of mine"
あの日あの時置き去りにした 記憶のかけら
ano hi ano toki okizari ni shita, kioku no kakera
"the fragment of memory I have left behind on that day, that time."
消えちまったのさ あの娘とともに
kiechimatta no sa, ano ko totomoni
"It has already disappeared, together with that girl;"
赤い夕日がやけにまぶしい 恋の城ヶ島
akai yuuhi ga yakeni mabushii, koi no jogashima
"The red setting sun looked especially dazzeling, (on) the Jogashima* of Love"
(Ballon from guy: It's so noisy (here)).
(Ballon from girl: "Don't look at me")
馬鹿な奴だと 笑っておくれ
baga na yatsu dato waratte okure
"If (I'm) a stupid guy, then go ahead and laugh"
(Guy seiyuu started to laugh)
(Arrow: The couple who easily agreed to act as a couple)
それが俺には お似合いさ
sore ga ore ni wa, oiai sa
"Then to me it is fitting"
(FX: Zabbaan! (sound of wave crashing into reef)
(Flashing Text: "The wall/barrier impossible to cross")
だけど ルルルル~ ルルルル~ルルル~ル~
dakedo rurururu~ rurururu~ rururu~ ru~
"However.... rurururu...."
(Flashing Text: "The wall/barrier impossible to cross")
時にはやさしく 抱いてくれ
toki ni yasashiku, daite kure
"Sometimes (you) need to be gentle, (oh) hug me!"
(Text as Shiraishi jumps off: "Shiraishi, you're kidding?!")
(Text as Shraishi climbs back up: "Gutless...")
*Jogashima Island (http://jogashima.com/) is a popular vacation spot an hour from Yokohama. The last island on the Miura Peninsula, it's famous for its fishing tours and rocky beaches. Needless to say, the ED MV is filmed at Jogashima.
The floating text is a parody of nicovideo video site, where users get to comment on the video itself.
Many of you may not know, but the song is in the old fashioned "ENKA" style popular amoung the aging Japanese. The sea background of the "MV" is a typical Japanese motif of "A man's power and determination". Such a motif is common for many, many Japanese shows and parodies. It would have been perfect if Shiraishi is in a traditional loin cloth singing with tears in his eye with a brilliant, "Yamato-dama" sunset above the raging sea. Oh! the wonder of burning youth! The lyrics Shiraishi composed is a very typical Enka lyric, filled with sadness, regret, and even an attempted suicide at the end. Bravo.
EDIT: Okay I'm gonna show y'all what ENKA is all about. Here's a great medley of great Enka singers that have appeared on NHK's Kouhaku. You don't have to like it, but Enka is a HUGE part of Japanese culture. Wanna impress your Japanese friends in Japan? Sing an Enka song in Karaoke. They will stop seeing you as gaijin like, forever.

Fantastic. Thanks very much for the analysis!
Enka sounds really pretty. I like it. ...But that's probably because I'm Asian, and I'm used to hearing this kind of stuff all the time when I was younger (though in Vietnamese). :P
The ED to the last episode should be one of the L*S girls doing Shiraishi's song.
A big thank you AVPlaya for the translation & information on Enka.
So do I understand right, unlike the other EDs this one is a complete (Shiraishi)Original?

Yes, Shiraishi wrote it himself. He probably dreamt it up as a joke, and the guys just took it and run with it. Lucky Star is a big inside joke for KyoAni and we're just there along for the ride.

That's quite interesting.. there are Enka-like songs even in Vietnam? Enka-style songs are popular in Korea and Taiwan due to past Japanese occupation; old folks are always listening to then, most of them translated directly from Japanese enka songs. I didn't know even Vietnam has them too... thank you for letting me know.
You both are very welcome.

Ah, what I said was probably misleading. I don't think it's called Enka in Vietnam, or if there exactly is any actual "enka" at all. But listening to that music reminded me of Vietnamese music that sounds very similar in style. There's one style called "cai luong," and those songs also have sad and depressed lyrics, mostly inspired from struggles during the Vietnam War.

Is it just me or have i heard this ending 'song' somewhere b4?
One of the eps in Haruhi.............
The ep where Kyon saved by Yuki from Ryoko..........and just after Yuki re-materialises the room, Taniguchi happens to walk in singing that exact same song.....only the first couple of words though....(funny how Taniguchi and Shiraishi are the same VA.....Shiraishi.)
Has anyone else noticed this or am i just hearing things?

@Cyber_chaotic,
You haven't been following the thread, have you?
No, you are not hearing things; this ED IS a parody of that particular SHnY scene, written and sung by Shiraishi Minoru, Akira's floormat in Lucky Channel, AND the actual VA for Taniguchi.
I wonder how many times one of us or other has to repeat this.
That first enka piece sounds very familiar to me... Saburo Kitajima? The only reason I know about enka is because I took a class on Japanese popular music a few months ago.
The first song was by a female artist named Sakamoto Fuyumi (http://www.fuyumi-fc.com/); one of the most famous female enka singer. It's easy to mistaken one enka song from another... if you listen enough you'll find a formula to most of the enka songs, especially the "hook" at the end. But that's what people liked and they've been singing it for centries. :)
Kitajima-sama (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sabur%C5%8D_Kitajima) is probably the most famous and senior of male enka artists; I tried to find a clip of him in fact, but I can't find a good one. This is the best I've found on YoUTsuBe, a Kouhaku performance (Kouhaku is almost the only time you'll ever get to see enka on prime time anymore... kinda sad):

As you can see the sound and video quality is quite terrible. Might give people bad first impression of enka. Don't mistaken me for some Enka expert.. just heard enough to know one song from another. :)
I wonder how many times one of us or other has to repeat this.
Don't be so hard on him... many people didn't see the billion wawawa parodies on youtube or nicovideo. :) I should have posted that info but I guess I'd just assumed Haruhi fans already know all about Mr.Wawawasuremono. Bad assumption. :heh:

Not only do we have yet another weird and wonderful Shiraishi Minoru ED for ep14, but we have a bit more info about hte first set of EDs.
On a radio show last Saturday, Tsukasa's seiyuu, Fukuhara Kaori, said that they did all the songs in one take, making it like a real karaoke session. The full versions on the soon-to-be-released CD can be previewed on YouTube. Links from my blog post here (http://hashihime.blogspot.com/2007/07/luckystar-kagami-and-tsukasas-radio.html). Hirano Aya previously said that she was asked (at the last minute) to do her songs exactly like the originals, in terms of breathing and phrasing.
