Ep01:

Tsukasa (to herself, embarrassed): It's over... I totally screwed up. I forgot we had examinations today, so I wore my print underwear. I'm so embarrassed!

Ya'll be aware that some of these quotes are .... "not so literal translation though they're in the spirit" courtesy of a.f.k. and others. At least a couple of quotes have substantially different translations depending on which sub is used (and I'd probably come up with yet another).

Yes of course, AFK's translation may seem loose, but it's the only fansub I watch. Besides, my real favorite line in the Nurse's Office scene is Konata's. Her despondent look and those few words made me laugh-out-loud... I don't know why, but it does.

Kona's translated quote is about as close as you can get to the original japanese "word" she used and the form she used. It was great.
A.F.K. does a great job of what I'll call "localization" --- carrying the spirit into what an equivalent english-speaking character might say. I just happen to personally prefer things be left as "original to the culture" as possible (especially when the concepts don't directly mesh --- there's a reason we import words like "gestalt" or "tsunami" ... for that matter English is a grand pastiche of other languages -- one reason it is so painful for outsiders to learn well).

I agree with you, but AFK's translation on all their works, have been close to the Japanese culture as they can given the limitations of the English language.

Unless they suddenly translate "Soba and udon" into "Laurel and Hardy" (I've seen translations like this in Japanese films in film festivals), I feel they have been pretty consistent and not too liberal with the translations. It's as if the translations are from a learn how to read/speak/write Japanese textbooks.

Besides, I also like their work, because their typesetting is very excellent.:heh:

This thread will most likely contain spoilers! If you are posting a quote from a recent episode then please use spoiler tags. (hint, text).

There aren't likely to be much spoilers Ojisan. The quotes will mostly pertain to jokes and stuff I would imagine given the nature of the series. It doesn't really have any links between episodes like most anime.

Episode 1:

Konata:: "She should stay this way forever" (referring to Miyuki's future being set as a moe icon)
Konata:: "A pillar of evolution" (same deal)

Others have been the discussion between Miyuki and Kagami's sister that cycled around endlessly like your average boring moe conversation about nothing. See Skane's quote for context.

Episode 2:

Customer: "Excuse me can you help me.."
Kona:"I'm busy right now" *While reading the manga and replying very curtly*

This is funny because this is almost what its like to go into a retail store in Canada and try to get assistance from somebody. They will almost invariably try to hand you off to somebody else by claiming they are busy, or will just plain ignore you.

Odds of this having any relevance to future episodes, I'd say 0.0000000001%. Odds of Konata's part time job ever coming up again, slightly higher at 0.0000001%.

Konata:"Change Getter" (2 switch on. Though if they had actually said the last part they might have been in trouble).

Odds of this line coming up again, about as good as Shin Getter-1 showing up and Stoner Sunshining the entire cast.

I was much happier with their ep 2 translation (though "staring contest" seemed to fit less well than "facemaking contest"). And yes, their typesetting, font choices, and handling of dialog overlap is quite sweet.

aye, I'm kind of torn ... a.f.k. does some wonderous work in typesetting, style and in general its just very professional. Their localization translation is *really* good (the "staring contest" versus the "funny face contest" being the only bobble I've noticed) -- I just personally prefer a more literal translation so I keep checking other works.

This is one of those series that I'll probably keep two or more complete sets of from different groups (and buy the R1 release as well).

Its "engrish" .... A casual japanese sentence may consist of nothing but a verb with a particular form -ending. The rest is implied by the context.

This may be the first anime I end up doing my own translation of because I'm unhappy with particular choices in segments of each and every effort.

Such is how new fansub groups are sprung I guess.

That may not be an exact translation, but none of the translations for this series have been exact thus far.

There isn't, and never will be, something such as an "exact" translation. There is a loss in every translation made.

I'm very fond of afk's translation, mainly because, being a translation student, their versions are the most professional ones, the ones that require less "extra" knowledge from the viewer. But, everyone is free to watch what they like. However, for quotes I'll probably stick with the original Japanese, to cause as less confusion as possible.

Mario is a pretty mainstream game, that type of grammar isn't uncommon in Japanese. Pokemon's slogan in Japan was (basically) "Pokemon GET".

I admit, I *snorked* at that. In this case I'd rather that they had kept the GET and just added a note for non-otaku explaining it.

The more and more Japanese I learn, the more and more discontent I get with translations not being right on the dot and easy to understand. Yes it is. And as an added trivia, McDonald's Japan is a separate company under McDonald's Holdings Japan, so they have a very high independence on services and quality compared to the McDonald's in the US. Furthermore, it also helps establish a firm customer base by offering free smiles (or so they claim on their corporate philosophy) of the global McDonald's motto "we love to make you smile" (or some variant of that sort).

That's not the Internet's fault. I actually learnt a lot of new words from browsing through the Internet, and "Dictionary.com" is one of my most frequently used plug-ins when I need to check out a word I am not familiar with.

The Internet is a tool. Use it properly, and it will serve you well. It's only when you stop caring about improving your language skills, will you then start learning the "wrong things".

People need to understand that different writing and speaking styles are *expected* depending on the context of the situation (sound familiar?).

Kona and Skane are correct --- the Internet *can* be a source of improvement, but only if you're not a lazy ass about communicating clearly.

If I took the time to correct every grammatic and spelling error I caught, I wouldn't have a life anymore. If I know they aren't native English speakers, I usually drop some knowledge for them, but otherwise they probably just don't care.

I don't see the internet dumbing down people's English, particularly. In fact, I think people write more now, since they communicate more by text and e-mail than they used to by mail. The idiom is different, but people get more practice. But people should know how to write/speak in different idioms for different situations. l33t-speak in a normal workplace would be a problem.

I do have an instinctive desire to correct everyone's English, but I try to control it. The fact is that some of the most "wrong" things are some of the most expressive. English is the most living of languages, and the fact that so many non-native-speakers speak it means that it has to roll with the punches, which is cool. It makes the language broader. But as Risaa did, let me know if you want me to go into editor mode.

Even the main dictionaries keep allowing new words in and allowing words to add meanings as people use them. This is unlike French, where the authorities keep trying to preserve it in a correct form. That's wonderful in its way, but not so "living" as English. As for "most," I meant it more in its meaning of "very" than literally, but I really don't know of any other language that is as open to outside influences and colloquialization of formal discourse.

I think the reason is partly that English is spoken by so many people as a second language that their ways of speaking gradually become part of the language. And English has two main centres (England and the US) so it evolves along two tracks at the same time. And America is very open to new ways of saying things. And the English-speaking world in general is very open to commerce, so advertising and entertainment keep bringing public language closer to the spoken language. Japanese accepts more foreign words, so I guess one could make a case there, but Japan is more closed to outside influence in other ways.

English is a pastiche of Angle, Saxon, Germanic, French, Latin, Gaelic, Welsh, Spanish, and any other language that happened to get raided or have raiding parties into Northern Europe. In the Imperial rush, english lifted words from all over the planet... grammar syntax is basically Latin but with all sorts of exceptions. In the 20th C. english is now "borgifying" terms from Asia/Japan and India -- as well as science fiction words entering the mainstream ("grok" "borg" "warp out").

I joke that in about 20 more years, english on the West Coast will be like a mix of Blade Runner and Firefly ---- a polyglottal swirl of japanese, chinese, spanish splattered into 'english' and sounding like an organic Esperanto on drugs.

Japanese (kind of sadly imo) is also an aggressive acquisition language ("hey, cool word, I think I'll use it"). Even 'local' words like "pan" derive from 16th C. Portuguese traders who brought the idea of bread over.

I disagree. Some of the words are borrowed because there is no Japanese equivalent of it. The word "pan" was used because if it were to be written in kanji, I would imagine it to be like "flour-based bacteria fermented food" which wouldn't be that appetizing. Also, when forcibly opened up to the West, Western words such as "democracy" "economy" "socialism" had to be conjured up into kanji form (minshushigi, keizai, shakaishugi). It'd be easy if you can find kanji words that fit into the term (i.e.: democracy is spelled with the kanji words that represent "people" "oriented" "based" "idea"), but some words are not available. You are thinking in terms of the western world which conjured up the ideas representing economy and politics, most Asian nations didn't have the notion of such until the mid-to-late 19th century.

It helps that they mangle the words to fit the "chant of the language" but I get a bit sad when I hear "Tanku" instead of "arigato" no matter how cute it may sound.

The phonetic meme of "thanks" in Japanese is sankyu; tanku is used as a huge container for liquids.

If you'll note the word 'local' is "quoted" to indicate it was a bit facetious. Pan/bread is an imported concept as you say ---- I was just saying it had been around for several hundred years but was not "original".

On the other hand, thanks for the "sankyu" -- I was taking a wild guess at that.

Since in Japanese she just says "it goes with your heart" and nothing else, there's no real marker of who it is directed to, but it would make no sense for Konata to make such a joke at Tsukasa.

Oh, yeah, it could be just that. I didn't get that feeling, though, from the timing of the punchline, and since she doesn't say お互い　or something like that... well, I could be a little paranoid, so the translation might be right.

I am loving the jobs the VAs have been doing with these characters. The way they speak the dialogue is what makes this show fun, especially for a slice of life, conversation-centered show like this.

From episode 3, just because the way it was said, that "good job!" at the end was hilarious. The way Kona immediately responded and said "I haven't" was also pretty funny too. :heh:

I tried the mayo on the Natto recently.I know people who do this, (one of the girls I know does), heck even Tsukasa's Seiyuu likes it (http://blog.livedoor.jp/kaorin_f/archives/2007-04.html#20070412). I remembered when I was young I used to mix raw egg yolk in it... so I was like "what the heck" dump, mix mix.... wasn't that bad. But it was more gooey, so I can't imagine the people who already hate Natto liking it better. I guess it kinda gets rid of the smell? Personally, I like it better w/o the mayo :heh:

Personally, I prefer natto after ingesting a large quantity of sake.

(commercial mayo on the other hand - is the purest evil in a jar. homemade mayo isn't so bad though)

NOTE:
I've taken a look at Eien no Anime's releases.... people who are somewhat unhappy with some of a.f.k.'s choices in translation or grimacing at some of LC's efforts might consider looking at EnA. They sort of occupy a middle ground -- definitely some errors but for 'no apparent reason' those didn't distract me so much. They actually spelled Negi-Tanshio properly and switched back and forth between the japanese names for food and their rough english meaning (providing for both types of audience) ....
They were a bit less colorful in translating some of the slang-ish talk but I spotted almost no grammar/syntax issues.

Their font and color choices for subtitling also scored a "win" from the Queen-of-picky about such things in my home.

So over-all Eien no Anime scored pretty highly in my book, I guess.

Actually, natto isn't that bad IMO. :) Sure it looks like a mass of sticky boogers clinging to the bowl and your chopsticks, and it stinks like you can't even describe, but the taste of it is almost, well.. good. (Of course, I had mine wrapped up in rice and seaweed; maybe that makes a difference.) XD

All I'll say is that *I* liked their translation better on average so far (how's that for a qualified endorsement). My wife really likes their font and color choices best. OTOH, Their OP translation is a bit of mess and shows just how much confusion there is over the mysterious "official lyrics".

1. resize: 704x396->704x396 (nearest neighbour) with letterbox: 704x484
2. null transform: cropping: crop 44 pixels off top

The first filter adds a 44 pixel black border both top and bottom, the second one removes the top border leaving just the bottom one. (It may be possible to add a border non-symmetrically to avoid the second step but I can't think of a way offhand.)

Interesting, I may have to play with that as well. I'd really like to see subtitles moved off the video area ... for a show like Lucky*Star where a fair amount of action occurs in that bottom inch --- it would be quite an enhancement to be able to subtitle without worrying about interfering with the view. I was wondering how such a layout might affect the quality of the video though.

The concentration of action right at the bottom of the screen was a particular issue in ep.1 but has improved a bit since I think. You could put the subs at the top of the screen, I tried that with the softsubs, it's not bad but feels a little unnatural. Another approach is to position them scene by scene so as not to cover the action, e.g. just above their heads or to one side, I did that once when making my own Yawara fansubs because in close ups the speaker's mouth was often right where the subs would normally go, so I lifted them a bit so as not to obscure the mouth.

Eh, Tsukasa's quote came from two difference episodes... the New Year's one and I think 14 or 15. Just two cute thing she said. Both episodes has been subbed and released. Kagami-sama says "warui na! (geez I'm sorry!)" often when Konata's making fun of her. Konata's AMON! is mostly heard during the 2nd OP single and some parts of the ED. collection. It's just too cute. Almost everything Kona said is a favorite, so I picked only one.

This little conversation was somewhat funny, but somewhat sad in many ways.

And, I think the best quote in the series ( pardon my fanboyism ):

Kona: "Why did mom decide on dad? I mean, you're an old, perverted lolicon otaku. Typically people wouldn't pick you."

Soujirou: "Even for a failure like me... There was always something I was always confident about."

Kona: "The one thing you were always confident about? What's that?"

Added to that and the change of mood in the background song, his and her teary eyes... I'm once again at the verge of crying.

My favourite too, had I been drinking anything at the time, it would have probably easily struck my TV. For a character with such little screen time, Konata's dad sure was awesome.
