Yes! I am a nerdy indie music fan.
I love death cab for cutie
the shins
snow patrols okay
Islands
The arcade Fire
The hush sound
We are scientists
and some others!
(If you consider all of them indie)
Your post has inspired me to go listen to "Rough Gem" by Islands
Snow Patrol... I lol'd. Nevertheless, what is this thread really about? Just listing our favorite "Indie" bands? No real discussion on how the term doesn't really means anything for the overall classification of the musical style or just go as newbie snobs who want to look cool in an anime forum?
The Islands is really an amazing band, though, I love how they really seem to have fun through their creations in a very "progressive" yet unpretentious kind of way. Sufjan Stevens and The Arcade Fire aren't too shabby, also.

The Islands are amazing I love "Rough Gem" and "Volcanos" by them. Whenever I am feeling bored, or depressed I just listen to them.
Funny thing about The Arcade Fire... my guitar teacher is kind of old fashioned, and he doesn't real like "new music" however he loves The Arcade Fire. (I guess that just shows how great they really are.
I agree with 7Th that this forum should have a purpose rather than just allowing people to state "I listen to indie"
So what would you say the definition of Indie music really is??
wikipedia (which I don't trust much) says "The word "indie" is often used to refer specifically to various genres or sounds in a realm of music that runs parallel to more commercial music"
(I pretty much translate that definition into music that is not very mainstream.)
I wouldn't say Muse and Beck is indie. Both are pretty big.
These are what I listen to and I would consider indie:
Dinosaur Jr.
Built to Spill
Pavement
Sonic Youth
Stereolab
Throwing Muses
Modest Mouse - kinda indie
But indie is really a false genre for music, because anything obscure could be indie and indie doesn't have an exact sound. So I usually just listen to their sound and then decide what type of band they are.
I remember hearing Modest Mouse, The Flaming Lips, Apples in Stereo, and Dinosaur Jr. (J. Mascis as well) about 6 years ago. Loved "indie" ever since.
Death Cab is pretty decent, as are Bloc Party and The Shins.
Personally when I hear old Modest Mouse or Dinosaur Junior or any of the aforementioned bands I think indie. It's a really different sound in my opinion.

Hmm the only band I like there is Muse. But nah I'm more in to old music. Music today is mostly awful >_<. But there are a few good bands... like Muse and Sigur ros.
... Indie has always meant to me that the band was "independent" aka not signed to a major label. The "sound style" was something completely irrelevant to the business structure.
Of course, with "indie" you're more likely to get experimental sounds or unusual sounds (eclectic, ambient, avant garde, etc).
Has the term devolved into a particular sound style? If so, what?
