does someone see the 7th episode ? I don't understand it because it is raw. lol but i'm crying for Yumi :-( (even if i don't understand the situation). someone can explain ?

Spoilers for ep 7

.

Valentine's Day is approaching and Yumi doesn't know if she should give Sachiko chocolates or not (and if so, what she should give her), so she asks advice from various people. She is also not sure whether or not to do it because Shizuka tells her that last year Sachiko turned down all the chocolates she was offered.
The Newspaper Club wants to do a big thing for Valentine's Day involving the boutons--they are planning a treasure hunt, with big prizes! ;) Originally they wanted the boutons to hide chocolate, but then after discussion they settled on different colored cards. The boutons will hide the cards somewhere within the Lillian grounds, and whoever finds them during the treasure hunt will win a date with the bouton whose card she found! That's why Yoshino gets so pissed off--she doesn't want anyone but her to date Rei! Thankfully, the boutons' petite soeurs are being allowed to participate in the treasure hunt (as are the Roses, although Rosa Gigantea seems to be the only one interested), so both Yoshino and Yumi really want to find their Onee-sama's cards and, at the same time, are worried that someone else will.
The boutons are in charge of planning the treasure hunt, so they are spending a lot of time doing that and Yumi is sort of avoiding Sachiko because she doesn't want to have an unfair advantage in the contest. But, Sachiko misinterprets her actions (especially after walking into a room in the Rose Mansion when Sei and Yumi were having fun...well, Sei was having fun anyway ;)) and asks her if she has come to hate her. Yumi can't answer and starts crying instead.
There is some other stuff that happens but I think those are the main points. :)

Hmm, I haven't read the entire post, but, I saw earlier in this thread, a lot of people were classifying Mari-Mite as yuri, which it is not. Maria-sama ga Miteru has nothing to do with lesbians!
I know I said that in the begining, when I had just seen the first episode.. And I feel really stupid about it. I had never heard of this series before, so I assumed it right away.. Well, I don't remember saying it was really yuri but I thought it had to do with it at first.. But after watching the other episodes I realized I was totally wrong.. @_@ Besides, like someone else said.. It's true that it's useless to classify anime ^^;;... And the relationships in it. ::nod::

even though i couldn't catch on to everything... the emotion and the music is soo vivid that its hard to miss whats going on. I think I mentioned this before, but i had wondered whether sachiko knew about yumi's feelings or not... but after watching episode 7..... sachiko seems oblivous of yumi's feelings.....or is that just me..?

what a way to make money...7 dvds?!!??! bandit jing has 13 eps and only goes up to 4 dvds... -_- 7...7....times...30bucks per dvd.... 0..the the....210! I thank the heavens for bestowing us fansubs and the people who give up time to do them.

Minagi: Lililicious already has the first chapter out...but I don't think they prioritize manga translation.... I wouldn't mind if another group dedicated their time to Mari-mite's manga. oh also! I agree, marimite should not be classified as yuri... although it is treated like so -_-

I have pre-ordered the manga, hopefully I will get it on the first week of March.
The manga in the Margaret magazine is lagging behind the anime. It 's only up to yellow-rose revolution.

Hmm..it's not 30 bucks per DVD. ;)

First volume is 2000 yen, the rest are 5500 yen per DVD I believe. Total is 35000 yen plus tax which equals to about US$340-350. Expensive hobby, buying R2 DVD that is....

English... well, I was thinking of starting a novel translation project... well, anyone already doing this..?

Sorry, just a simple question.
How hard is the japanese in the novels?
My jap isn't very good, but i am thinking of buying the marimite novels since so many ppl've recommended it.

I am behind on watching the animations.. only on ep 5 now.
But the spoiler for ep 7 is surely getting me worked up~
come on come on, let Yuki find the card and win her dream date with Sachiko!!

Yes, it seems to me that she doesn't seem to notice Yumi's real intentions/motivations in this episode, which is why she gets angry at the end.

Um, the group is first and foremost a manga scanlation group--don't know if you've been basing your knowledge of us on the work we've done on the Marimite anime, but as you can see from our webpage (http://lililicious.cjb.net), manga is really what we do. :) Anyway, chapters 2 through 5 of the Marimite manga (as well as the Valentine's Special that just came out) are currently in editing and should be out very soon. If you're unhappy with our efforts, then by all means encourage another group to work on it, and we can have yet another example of wasted effort in the scanlation/subbing community (which, by the way, I don't think I will ever understand).
Also, although I think at this point it is very difficult to "classify" certain relationships, we at least have strong indications of S (aka Class S--if people don't know this term let me know and I will explain it), which for me would indicate it is yuri, as with many of the stories in supposedly yuri-themed magazines and anthologies.

***** SPOILLLL ****
thank you very much for the spoiler about episode 07 !!!
actually, i understand the game in valentine day and yoshino and yumi's feeling. but i really don't understand the end. true mistake. i'm a little happy for Yumi, because Sachiko is going to cry too when she talks to Yumi at the end. Sachiko doesn't understand that the chocolats, which Yumi wants to prepare, will be for her ! and yes!!! she is jealous. i think i will wait for the subtitles. lol but i think sachiko tooks a blow in the moral with this story but it is not cool to shout after Yumi, Sachiko was however controlled since the beginning and we have the impression that she explodes. Why does Yumi not seem to be able to speak to her correctly ? surely, she is shocked. the preview of episode 08 is really surprising.

I can't see why you chose not to explain this term immediately you are using it since it has to do with your argument. I have never heard of it and expect that many people viewing this vastly popular thread have not heard of it either.

I wonder why Sachiko is so jealous over Sei playing with Yumi..
I mean, after all, Sachiko only sees Yumi as a little sister, doesn't she?

I happen to know that in the novel, Sachiko eventually becomes very "Yumi dependent"... hmmm, i hope they'll show that in the animation. :)

i think Sachiko won't say her feelings. but she shows them. at the end of episode i think sachiko was impulsive.
it's difficult to know if her jealousy is a love feeling, i don't know and honestly, i really don't think Sachiko falling in love with Yumi. not now, i think. but in the second year, i think their relations will become intense. Sachiko is too a lady to jump on people. lol contrary to Sei. (ho sorry for my english). i think she is jealous about Sei, because Sei listens to her heart. contrary to Sachiko who listens to her spirit and not her heart.

Uhhh, I hope you mean Yumi in the whole message.
I never saw Sei playing with Yuki, who is Yumi’s brother. I certainly hope that Sachiko will become “Yumi dependent,” not “Yuki dependent.”

That is, if there is a second season at all. This series is half way through already. I don’t understand why there is still no information about exactly how many ep it is going to be.

If there is not going to be a second season at all, I am going to find a pond (which is about 4 miles away), cry my eyes out so that it won’t flood the neighborhood.

It may be a crisis if there isn't a 2nd season. In addition to Seattle' rainy weather, I might drown the northwest of the United States too... ;_;

Hmm... damn you lucky people with access to the manga... but my guess is that Sachiko may have complicated feelings about Yumi later on... and then my guess is that what she has is just a sisterly-love(just overblown) and Yumi will fall apart, and someone will be inlove with Yumi, but Yumi has feelings for Sachiko, and we have this love triangle going on... and the story would just deterioate because Yumi won't end up with Sachiko, and Sei is off to college.

Anyhow, why isn't there an exact answer on how many epsiodes there are?!!?!?!

Correction: People with access to the novels. "Mari-mite" is originally a written novel, consisting of 16 volumes.

And, the most probable cause that people do not have an exact number is because they don't live in Japan. If they did, they would know that the "Maria-sama ga Miteru" DVDs that will be released over here is seven volumes, with one episode on the first disc and two each on the other six. Total episodes: 13.

To avoid more confusions:

Mari-mite novels (no picture, just text): up to episode 16 http://www.toranoana.co.jp/mailorder/comic/recomcomic/marimite-top.html

Mari-mite serialized manga in margaret magazine: up to chapter (not episode!) 9

Mari-mite manga: book 1 will be released in February 25th 2004

To kj:
As in my previous posts, I assumed the most likely number is 13, I agree with your analysis on the DVD counting. However, there are many sources that indicate unclearly that the number of episode is 26. If this is true, The DVD release counting is only for Season 1, they do not count Season 2. I like this anime, I hope that the anime will be better than Fruit Basket (Gosh, the similarity between Yumi and Tohru is very obvious)

if Sei is off to college, it will be annoying... i hope seeing Sei again after graduations.
but if Sachiko doesn't love Yumi at the end of series, i really want to know how this series will end .... at the 13th episode !
Sei will leave the college, Sachiko doesn't love Yumi, Youko will leave the college too... pffff ! the end will be the same as the other series --> a disappointing end!
for me, it will be a flood of tears ! :-(

Awww, now this series sounds just like many, many, many other shojo anime/manga/novels. I was hoping that this one would have a different ending, no matter Sachiko returns Yumi’s feelings or not.

Has anybody read the March issue of NewType USA magazine? There is an article about new anime in 2004 and Maria-sama ga Miteru is not even in it! I guess this series really isn’t getting much of the rating in Japan.

"Class S"wa nandesuka?

In my understanding, "Class S" refers to romantic relationships between schoolgirls that are considered to be based more in emotion even if a physical component exists. They are considered to just be a normal phase that the girls will grow out of, and so are accepted and not really given much attention. The "S" might stand for "sister," "sex," "escape," "shoene," or "shoujo." My knowledge of the subject may be out of date, so if anyone has any corrections or additional info that would be great. My primary source for the information is Jennifer Robertson's Takarazuka: Sexual Politics and Popular Culture in Modern Japan. (which by the way is a great book, imo :))

I thought translation and fansubbing were hobbies. I don't understand how anyone is wasting effort in translating something regardless of who else may be doing the same project. I am aware that there is some etiquette involved which usually discourages starting in the middle of a project and so on, but I can't see anything else that constitutes a problem.
I agree that translation and fansubbing are hobbies. However, I think that they are different from other hobbies in that they typically involve benefits for others (namely, the sharing of art/stories/whatever that others would not have full access to because they do not know Japanese). Maybe it's just me, but a large part of my motivation in translating is that I'm helping others. If I were to do something that has already been done by someone else, then all I'm doing is giving people something that they already have, which I wouldn't really consider to be helping them (except under unusual circumstances, of course).

And just to relate this to Marimite: I'm wondering if part of the reason for Sachiko's anger at Yumi is because she doesn't understand Yumi's feelings--she says that she doesn't understand why Yumi is avoiding her but still interacting normally with Rei and Shimako, but isn't that just because Yumi is only interested in searching for Sachiko's card?

I think Sachiko doesn't want to know yumi's feelings. if Yumi says it to Sachiko, Sachiko won't reply " me too ".... obviously. But maybe Sachiko would like Yumi only as sister, but Yumi will never see Sachiko like a sister... so Sachiko cannot take Yumi in her arms (and, even if Yumi cries, Sachiko cannot comfort Yumi since she is the cause of the yumi's pain : end of episode 07)... i wish you understand me lol

either Sachiko is stupid and see nothing about Yumi... or Sachiko doesn't want to answer to Yumi's feelings... and i think it's the second idea, because Sachiko isn't stupid.

Be patient, grasshopper. Sachiko is not the type that will express her feeling openly and directly. But through many very subtle things you can see that Sachiko indeed has a strong affection towards Yumi. Things like righting Yumi's tie even it's unneccessary, following Yumi's every move even though it appears that she's not paying attention to Yumi, the changes in her expression when she sees Yumi, et cetera. Since these are quite subtle, it's really difficult to notice it in the anime but can be expressed better in written format. However, in Yumi's second year, things become quite obvious between the two because they learned a lot from their conflictions in the first year and you can clearly see the strong affections between them and being expressed more explicitly.
As for why Sachiko is so angry of Yumi, novel has some kind of explanation. It's partially because Sachiko is seeing the bad side of herself in Yumi at that time. She really wanted to be more open of her thoughts and feelings and then she saw Yumi refusing to tell her her thoughts, just like the part of her she tried to shed deparately, that makes her quite irritated. Also, the insecurity and panic inside Sachiko are also part of the factors that lead to her explosion. Don't you think she sounded quite desparate when she confronted Yumi? You think Sachiko only sees Yumi as her little sister? Well, if that's the case, she wouldn't be so mad....

Göönk
2004-02-22, 06:10
but Yumi will never see Sachiko like a sister... I believe you're going to far with the girls feelings. I think it's strang friendship, and not love. As PKGIRL163 said, it's all about girls feelings and not necessary love. Well, I haven't read the novels and so we'll see in the end, but I don't believe there 's any love there. I mean, no pationate gay love.

And it's one of the point of the series : ambiguous feelings. Right? We all WANT TO KNOW what' up between the girls. I mean, there is no man in the series. But I think it's not going to happen.

laurore31

I agree with you, lordwu, Sachiko has a strong affection towards Yumi, but I think it's not love...
When Sachiko has an argument with Yumi, have you listen her tremble voice (as if she were going to cry) ? because Yumi can't say a word, because Yumi smiles with Sei, it's at this time only that I doubt the feelings of Sachiko (love or friendship), but i really really don't think that Sachiko loves Yumi. not now. Sachiko and Yumi are upsets. I really would like to know if Sachiko loves Yumi. I think she will fall in love for Yumi. but if they express their feelings now, the anime is finished ! lol

you really think Sachiko loves Yumi and she hides it ?

Goonk, on the other hand, Yumi loves Sachiko, i'm sure. at the end of episode 02 Yumi think and cries about her feeling for Sachiko.... " because I have feelings for her .... why can't she understand it ? "
Rei and Yoshino are in love too ! there is no only ambiguity.

no passionate gay love : ok I understand. this anime doesn't want to show us that but the previous moment before this passionate love. I think. it's rather complex relations. and the end, I hope, will be more passionate :-)

Whether Yumi loves Sachiko or not is debatable, but I'm surprised people are still doubting the show having any shoujo-ai undertones after episode 6. An on screen, not too short kiss more than mildly implys something. I agree the relationships can't be neatly classified into one category or another, but you can't honestly denigh any romantic element exists.

I just watched episodes 1-6 in the last 2 days, and I must say I'm insanely hooked and fighting the temptation to download the ep7 raw. It would so ruin it to watch it and only understand half of what they're saying. :(

Edit: minor grammar errors, it's 5:30 am where I live. :heh:

Ho ! Hi ! Vincent !!!! :-))))

"daisuki" or "ano onna ga suki" (in the context of maria sama) --> in japanese.
it's not only for the words which Yumi says at the end of episode 02. it's the situation too, the reaction of Yumi, the eyes of Yumi, .... I'm really sure Yumi loves Sachiko. it's not only admiration. ho ! when Yumi dances with Rei... she rejects her after one glance of Sachiko... how do you interpret this ?

this friendship turns to be LOVE <-- surely but the friendship is the feeling of Sachiko, not Yumi ! :D

Yoshino and Rei are cousin, but they are in love. at the hospital, the glances don't mislead us and in one moment I really believed that they were going to kiss. At the 7th episode, Yoshino is irritated (you will understand if you see it)...

The anime doesn't show all the feelings, but it will lead us to more intense relations (including the love).

EDIT :
CompShrink : yes after episode 06, we definitly know the anime is about shoujo ai relations, love between girls.

I disagree with your opinion, I think it is a sisterly love, especially during conversation between Yumi and Sachiko in the rose garden.

lol yes I like this series very much. i don't know why, it's the first time I see me in the main character. :thinker:

on cdJapan there is only soundtrack album, drama cd and dvd. In fact, "image soundtrack" named " le rosaire pour vous " is the BGM about maria sama ga miteru but the music isn't in their definitive version. this is the first album where the fan watch the first pics of this series, that's why it's named " images soundtrack". This album was put on sale in 2002 but i'm not sure about it. (i'm currently prepare the site page for it).

I hope that you have wrong about sisterly love :-) I think several fans wait for a kiss... lol (I know pertinament it will not arrive in the first season, but I keep the hope)... and in the "image soudtrack" there is several titles as " first kiss " and
" confession " and "The rose which you love" and no i'm stopping here lol .... so I hope !!! :-)

Edit : here ost_maria (http://mariamite.free.fr/maria_ost.htm) it's the "image soundtrack".

As for Rei and Yoshino (Spelling?):

Yes, they are cousins. But someone here also pointed out that marriage between first cousins is legal in Japan and is not considered incest. Hence, if the argument is only based on that “they are cousins, therefore, they cannot be in love ‘in that way,’” maybe this is not quite a persuasive argument.

As for Sachiko and Yumi:
I still think that Yumi’s feelings for Sachiko are clear. All that glances, smiles and gloomy expressions… if Yumi only does this to a very dear friend and friend only, I would very much like to know what expression/feelings she would have for a lover. Then maybe I can tell the difference.

Also, like someone mentioned earlier, this is a low-key romance show. If there is love between any of the girls, it is probably going to be hardly detectable. It does not necessarily mean that it is neither there nor not passionate. It is just…. subtle, IF it indeed exists in the anime. I don’t expect to see a kiss between the girls through out the whole series, simply because it would not be “subtle.” I mean a kiss like between lovers, not like a friendly little kiss (Sei does that a couple times already).

Therefore, even if Sachiko loves Yumi, it is going to be very hard to know. Actually, it raises a question whether Sachiko herself knows what kind of feelings she has for Yumi.

Just sharing a few thoughts of mine.

That was not an official release. It was a fan production CD and was out of print and sold out on the site that was selling it in Aug. 2003 (published in Aug. 2002). It would be extremely difficult and costly to get it now unless you are in Japan.

It's really curious and funny.

- Some people think it's obvious that it's just strang friendship and pure admiration for nice people.

- Others, are sure that's it's real love.

Confusion among us !

Lordwu : It's my site :D and yes it's not official. but this album is really better than the future album soundtrack. the titles of song are just the translation of japanese titles. I won't be able to take the plane to buy this album lol

Lanimoo : ave maria version in "image soundtrack" album is a little different because there isn't piano. but this version is beautifull too. in fact, this is the only song which I prefer in the anime lol

Goonk : I think the real love between two girls can begin with the admiration. Yumi admires Sachiko in an intense way, and the "border" between the love and intense admiration is very thin. So all the people are right ! (grrr i really would like to speak english as I speak french ! i have the impression I'm speaking english as a school girl ! pffff it's too easy when I speak about websites, services ... with the customers ! but when I must talk about feelings it's really difficult !!! )

Here's a bit of trivia info for you:

The seiyuu for Shimadu Yoshino - Ms. Ikezawa Haruna, was born in Athens, Greece. Her father is Mr. Ikezawa Natsuki, a famous Japanese novelist.

Ms. Ikezawa Haruna (up to recently) was an assistant to NHK's weekly broadcast to teach viewers French. In the past, she also taught viewers in Spanish, Italian, and German language lessons, as she can speak them quite fluently.

Round 1,2,3 are funny too~
I thought Sachiko's face is not angry enough though. She doesn't really have that much facial expressions, does she?
You really have to watch it very carefully to catch her depressed look. (her eyes are her emotion give away.)

OMG, the sheer agony of waiting for the next episode!!
It's killing me.... and the worst thing is that I wun get to watch the subtitled epi 7 until two weeks later (cuz I can't download stuff in the place I'm at now), not to mention how long I have to wait for 8 .......argh.....

I think the ambiguity about all the relationships in the anime is good, it lets us think what we want to think, not to mention it leads to lively debates here, lol.
Thanks everyone for all the summaries and bit and pieces of info on marimite, I really appreciate it!
But I agree, Sachiko's expression is very subtle, she does not give away much at all. I must really loook closely and at her eyes to see what she is actually feeling. Totally in contrast to Yumi's expression.
btw, the scene in episode 7 where Sei was playing with Yumi, as in like trying to catch her, was so cute. A plus point is that Shimako looked so surprised and was just staring quietly at them...lol. I thought she was shocked....or maybe she was just bemused....too bad sei does not play with her like that....lol

Uwaaa~aa I can't believe that they would have it end right then and there. Though I must say that I never heard so much emotion in Sachiko's voice than in this episode. It was rather refreshing. The next week's episode clips look promising as well. I also see that Yumi went into the Garden House to think. Looks like everyone goes there when something goes wrong, ne?

But I 'm sure that or at least *hope* that everything will turn out right. Marimite if currently on my top 5 list and is making its way up higher. Can't wait for the next episode, its bound to be a great dramatic one ^^;

wah rose gigantea is such a player she kiss rose canina in one moment then goes and huge shimako the next. hehe but i like her the most she's so funnie. the other funnie character i like is yoshino and rei they are so cute together. omg the sweet soft spoken yoshino goes crazy in ep 7 when she refuses to have anyone date rei other then her. hehe. ah i love the part yoshino was looking away and rei was poking her cheeks so kawaii.

i like how this anime goes from sad to funnie just like that so it makes you feel relieve a bit and not so stressed out. i really feel sad for rose canina she been waiting for rose gigantea for two years and at the end she only got a little kiss. Plus the ending of ep 7 is so sad ahh i want to know what happens next...*sniff* i hate cliffhangers they are the worst.

anyone know what ep 8 is coming out with sub? please tell me it's sometime this week i just love this anime. there's only three anime that i'm currently waiting for this one, naruto and prince of tennis but marimite is number one on my list :>

I was soooo sad to see Yumi cry because of Sachiko’s misunderstanding. I cannot believe that Sachiko is so harsh on her!! I thought Sachiko would consider raising her voice to anybody was too unladylike. She tells Yumi how she feels about her, although it is totally the opposite of what Yumi thinks, hence the misunderstanding. But it shows that Sachiko is now doing better of expressing her emotions and just how much she cares about Yumi. I don’t think she has ever shouted at people like that! Still, I was heart broken to see Yumi cry like that.
I think I am gradually changing my idea about relationships among these girls, as the story progresses and reveals more and more….

A side note: wow, Yoshino passionately refuses the proposal from the school news club, that is something. I didn’t know that she had it in her.
Rei, you lucky girl.
Correction: Rei and Yoshino are both lucky to have each other.

Kanina Shizuka finds Toudou Shimako's Valentine's card. Hence, Rosa Canina gets the honor to go out with Rosa Gigantea en bouton for Valentine's date. They end up cooking at the Rose House.

Yoshino fails to find Rei's Valentine's Day card. Ironically, one of Rei's fans who were following Yoshino (believing that she would lead them to the prize), find the card in...an action book in the library.

Supposedly, "no one" finds Sachiko's card. Note the quotation as there is a slight story behind that. Yumi does come close though. As a consolidation prize, she give Sachiko-sama her "bikkuri chocolate." The prize if Sachiko chooses the "correct chocolate" is to go out on a date with Yumi-chan.

Yes. Last year, there was widespread interest in the novel "Maria-sama ga Miteru" among the otaku world (probably was even before when it was first published back in 1998).

Rumors of being animated started to fly around in the middle of 2003.

By Winter Comike 2003, many doujin groups started selling doujinshis and doujin games about Mari-mite.

Unfortunately, since I was too caught up with playing ero-games, I fell late in catching the speculation. After perusing the doujinshis from Winter Comike 2003, I felt the extreme urge to read the original story. Hence, I rushed over to the nearest Gamers and Animate store (Ikebukuro) to buy the entire 16 volumes.

Luckily, I was able to read through the entire 16 volumes before the anime started airing.

ahh poor thing i wanted yoshino and rei to go on the date together. well actually from some view point they seem to act like a married couple already hehe dun ya think so? i think rei once said something like we have been together for so long that we don't have to go through the mushy stuff like Sachiko is with yumi. sound kinda like an old married couple to me but then again some people in here still believe they are just good friends so believe what you want to believe.

oh a side note i seriously love this anime and hope that the ending would good and not something that would make me hate it.

My Japanese is not very good, but I hope I can understand the novels with a dictionary.
I guess I'll buy the Cobalt magazine first and see how much I'm able to read.

sleeplessheart : thanks for your answer :-) i wish lililicious wait for the manga release. that must be great of reading Japanese. you are not worried about English releases.

Not really, my japanese is very basic. While reading manga is quite challenging, reading novel is beyond my ability. I certainly hope that someone/a company translates the novel, although I have never heard such of thing has ever happened.

Well, the company that released the english language manga of Onegai Teacher also put out an english traslation of the novel based on the Onegai Teacher anime. And announced a release of the english version of the (first?) Onegai Twins novel. The problem is that reviews of the Onegai Teacher novel say its full of spelling and grammatical errors. I guess half an english is better than no english at all. Who knows, hopefully this will start a new trend.

I thought it's more easy to read manga than read a novel in japanese ! i'm surprised.
if the series has success, the novel will be sure translated. I think.

i'm surprised i really understand all the episode (with no subtitles) but could you confirm that :

yes Sachiko was really nice at the end. but i don't know the chocolate was so bad lol.
Sei found the yellow card but she gave it to Rosa Canina ! I don't understand why. (yumi shows Sei where the yellow card is ! lol)
Yumi should have found the red card, but another one has take it before Yumi. When Sachiko and the girls return at the roses' garden, we suppose a mysterious girl (who found the red card first), timid maybe, has hid again the card near the chinensis rose.... but we don't know why
And Sei refused the yumi's chocolats because of the tin's color ? lol
Actually, i didn't understand what Sei says to Yumi at the beginning, and too, what Sachiko says to Yumi at the beginning. She says she doesn't understand why Yumi has accept the rosary of Sachiko ? :-(

Laurore31:

If my ears heard correctly:
When Yumi saw that she handed Sachiko the red box, she refused to give it to Sachiko. Sachiko thought that Yumi was still reluctant to give her chocolate and telling her that she did not hate chocolates. Actually, the reason why Yumi held the red box is because ..... the chocolates in this box contain nuts which Sachiko hates according to Shimako.

Oh, about the girl. Finally, Yumi has a rival.

i have also come to like marimite a lot. was originally watching fansubs, but now i can't wait and have been getting raws once they're up. but i can only understand about a half of it the first time through =P

i find i really like sweet animes like this. i don't believe i've come across too many before. ( :topicoff: this reminds me a little of fruit basket. just a little. the sweetness of the main characters. i thought fruit basket was really sweet too. 'cept i think tohru is an even nicer girl)

Sei found Shimako's Valentine's Day cake. Not the "yellow card," nor did she give it to Rosa Canina. Besides, the "yellow card" would be for the Rosa Foetida family. Shimako's card was white. Kanina Shizuka found Shimako's card posted onto a bulletin board (which no one cared to look).

Yumi supposedly thought Shimako hid her card inside the first floor of the Bara no Yakata. When Rosa Gigantea looks at Yumi-chan's "100-faces," she jumps-the-gun to assume that that is the room where "Yumi-chan must've hid the chocolate for me." However, Shimako did not hide her card there - she hid her Valentine's Day cake to give to her grand soeur.

And Sei did not refuse Yumi's chocolate. In the novel, Yumi decides not to give it to Rosa Gigantea anyway as to spoil the special cake that Shimako "gave" to Sei.

As for "Yumi-chan's rival" story.... hmm...bluntly: "handkerchief" & "being there at the right time."

Sachiko likes more and more Yumi, love or sisterly love or friendship, it doesn't matter, the relation between them become "intense". Well, I'm sure that someone who has read the novel could answer it better, but from the preview for next week's episode my impression was:
This girl has secretly been in love with Sachiko from a young age. I came to that conclusion because the images from the preview seemed to show a younger version of Sachiko and of some other girl, and because Yumi says something like "Isn't it romantic when someone has a secret crush on someone else?" (note that's just off the top of my head, not verbatim from the preview).

Speaking of surprises, would someone who's read the novel or is good at japanese mind explaining the "bikkuri" part of Yumi's choco in a spoiler tag? i mean the explanation she gave to Sachiko. i think this is the only part i didn't understand in ep 8.

When the boxes go flying, some of the chocolates get mixed up. Then Sachiko picks a chocolate and if it is a "good" one she wins the prize of a half-day date with Yumi (like the prize Yumi would have won in the treasure hunt if she had found Sachiko's card...*sigh*). However, Sachiko lies and says she got a "good" one even though she got one of the gross ones, although when she said that she didn't know about the prize (so I'm not sure if she was saying it to be nice or if she was guessing that she would get something nice if she picked the right one).
Maybe someone else can explain it better? I'm a little fuzzy on the details.

Most of the important spoilers about episode 8 have already been mentioned, but if anyone wants a full synopsis here is the one I posted at shoujoai.com:

This is all off the top of my head so hopefully I will get everything in the right order and not leave anything out. ^^
This episode begins right where the last episode leaves off, with Yumi crying after Sachiko confronts her. Sachiko gets upset that Yumi is crying when she (Sachiko) is the one who should be upset (well, in her way of seeing it, anyway ;)). Sachiko then says that they will talk about it later when they've both calmed down a little. Then, Rei and Minako (the girl from the Newspaper Club) come in. They see that Yumi is crying and ask what's wrong, and Sachiko gets offended and thinks they are blaming her for what has happened. They are there for a meeting about the Treasure Hunt, so Yumi wipes away her tears, says nothing is wrong, and leaves. She goes to the greenhouse and looks at the Rosa chinensis bush...
Then, there is a knock on the door. It's Sei! :) Sei comes in and talks with Yumi about the situation. She tells Yumi that Sachiko went through something similar with Youko (the current Rosa Chinensis) when she was a first-year. Apparently Sachiko was trained to never say her opinion about anything, and Youko finally got so frustrated by it that she told Sachiko to speak up if there was something she wanted to say. So, Sachiko was able to gradually get over that habit, although I think she's not over it completely (I'm sure we could debate that... ;)). Yumi feels better after Sei tells her this, and they get up to leave (Sei says she wants to get out of there because she doesn't like the greenhouse). Yumi then gets upset because she won't have anyone to help her like this when Sei graduates. Sei tells her that if she can learn to speak her mind to Sachiko, she'll be able to handle anything, and tells her to make up with Sachiko as "homework."
The next day (?), Yumi goes to the Rose Mansion and sees Shimako come out of the back room on the first floor, looking a little flustered and embarassed. She concludes that Shimako must have hidden her card there. She then goes upstairs to find Yoshino and Rei arguing because Yoshino wants a hint about Rei's card is (or at least to have Rei listen to her guesses). Rei asks Yumi to take Yoshino away, and Yoshino plans to leave with Yumi. But first, Yumi apologizes to Sachiko, and asks if they can talk later. They agree to meet in the greenhouse after the treasure hunt is over.
Minako announces the rules and whatnot of the treasure hunt (there are the 3 colored cards, they have one hour, etc.), then tells the boutons' petite soeurs that they have a 5-minute handicap. They wait out their handicap in the Rose Mansion along with Eriko (Rosa Foetida) and Sei (can't remember if Youko was there or not -_-), who are also participating. When they are allowed to start, Yumi stares at the door where she thinks Shimako hid the chocolate, and so Sei gets the idea that "something nice" is in that room and goes to look there. Yoshino sets off on her own, as does Yumi. However, Yumi soon finds that she is not alone... she is being tailed by a group of Sachiko's fans, who think she must know where the card is. She runs away from them (in a VERY cute scene), and escapes them by climbing through a window (?).
By that time, she only has 15 minutes left. She tries to think of where she would have hidden the card if it had been her hiding it, and thinks of the greehouse. However, when she gets there, there is another girl there, and no card in sight. She sees a pile of dirt next to the Rosa chinensis plant and digs in there, but there is nothing there, and the other girl tells Yumi that she already looked there and there was nothing there.
The end of the treasure hunt is announced and everyone assembles in the courtyard. Only two out of the three cards have been found. The first one announced is the white card, which was found by Shizuka (Rosa Canina) on Shimako's committee (which apparently has something to do with environmental maintenance or something? It's not mentioned in this episode but apparently is mentioned at some point in the novels)'s bulletin board. The second one announced is the yellow card, which was found by some random first-year whose name I already forgot. ^^ The girl says that she found it in the library, and Yoshino gets mad and tells Yumi that the library was the first place she looked (in the novels, it says that she checked in the sort of books that Rei likes, but some of Rei's fans, after reading the misleading info about Rei's favorite book in the Lillian newspaper, checked in action books and found it in one of those). Then it is announced that the red card was not found, and Minako asks Sachiko where it was hidden. Sachiko suggests that they all go to retrieve it.
And, surprise surprise, they go to the greenhouse. Yumi steps forward and tells Sachiko that she looked there, and that she dug next to the Rosa chinensis bush. Sachiko is surprised, and digs in the same spot and finds the card. Yumi is, needless to say, upset about it and asserts that she did in fact look there. Sachiko believes her, in part because the card was deeper than she had originally buried it. Sachiko suggests they think of it as a prank played on them by St. Valentine.
Back at the Rose Mansion, Sei says she wants to thank Yumi for the chocolate and Yumi pulls out the nasty batch of chocolates that she made (in the Valentine's Day special manga, we see more about this; she adds some rather unusual ingredients and only ends up with a good batch when her brother helps her; Lili will be releasing a scanlation of the Valentine's Day special soon) to give to her. Sei is surprised because she thought that the marble cake she found in the back room was from Yumi. The cake was really made by Shimako, who put it there because she was still unsure whether or not to give it to Sei. Yumi thinks that this is another prank of St. Valentine's.
Yumi goes upstairs to talk to Sachiko. Sachiko tells Yumi that she was upset because when she was a first-year, Youko could read her like a book, and she doesn't have the same ability with Yumi. Yumi then tells Sachiko that the reason she was sneaking around was that she wanted to give Sachiko chocolates. She also says that she knows that Sachiko doesn't like Valentine's chocolates, but Sachiko explains that what she doesn't like is that the first-years use her to indulge their desire to give chocolates to someone. She says that she would be happy to accept chocolate from Yumi. :D Yumi pulls out the chocolates to give to Sachiko and then, as Sachiko reaches out to take them, realizes that it's the wrong box (it's the nasty chocolates she was going to give to Sei as a prank)! She tries to get Sachiko to let go, but Sachiko won't. She pulls the other box out of the bag and tries to give it to her, but that doesn't work either. After a few more seconds of them both pulling on the box, both boxes go flying. Both boxes end up missing one chocolate, and so when Sachiko picks one up and eats it Yumi is worried that she got a "bad" one. But, Sachiko tells her that she got a "good" one and asks what reward she gets for picking the right one in the "bikkuri chocolate" game ("bikkuri" in this case means "surprising"). Yumi tells her that she won a half-day date with her (the prizes for the bouton treasure hunt game were half-day dates with the boutons). Then, the camera pans over and we see a chocolate sitting in the lid of the "good" box, which is presumably a "good" chocolate.

If anyone has any corrections or anything to add please let me know (within spoiler tags of course ;))! :)

The word play is in romanized Japanese. At the end of the novel, the author compared Yumi and Mifuyu as "similar height, hair style, and word name 'without the alphabet letter K' "

A. Fukuzawa Yumi - K = Uzawa Mifuyu (anagram: Fuuzawa Yumi)

i believe "maria-sama ni wa naisho" is "keep it a secret from maria-sama"
is it written as マリアさまには内緒? or is it マリアさま庭内緒? i doubt it's the second one though... i did a quick google search on "maria-sama ni wa naisho" and there seems to be a doujinshi called "maria-sama ni wa naisho desu". i wonder if they're related...

looks to me the last track (20) of the doujin image soundtrack is "maria-sama no kokoro". it's the same melody as the one played in eps 1 and 3, except it's pure instrumental (midi i think), so no singing.
who composed the song? can anyone shed light on this?

just saw ep. 8, once again it was great :)

I liked the way the episode ended, with picking the correct chololate :)

Also...with the girl in the treehouse, what happened? I think she found the card, and yumi came in...she lied to yumi, but she didn't want to be the one to have found it so she put it back when she left...?

Another Splendid episode. I love this series just for the quality of the voice acting. :D

Yup thats what I'm thinking too. since Sachiko said she didn't bury that card that deep. It seemed it was put back by the unknown girl, probably a fan of Sachiko maybe.

That’s why I never bought any model. Poster/wall scroll/art book are good enough for me. Actually, I hope someday, someone will invent 3-D image of anime characters with artificial intelligence so that they can talk and act right in front of you. But not just speaking a few sentences over and over again, like toys these days, the characters can sort of come to life; that’s what the artificial intelligence for. Don’t even know if that’s going to happen in this century or not.

That was slightly off topic.
Now, about Sei and Shimako.

Their mentality is beyond my comprehension. Shimako clearly says that she had not even thought of giving anything to Sei and Sei bluntly tells Yumi that she is not going to ask Shimako for Valentine’s chocolates even if she wants some. When I saw that Shimako does make a cake for Sei, I thought maybe that was a last minute decision. Then Shimako is hesitating to give it to Sei. Is she afraid of being rejected? I thought their bond is deep then Shimako does not need to worry about being rejected by Sei, especially not over a cake. Then Sei plays this little game about mistaking who makes the cake etc. Why does she need to pretend that in front of Shimako? Sei could have just praised Shimako, instead of keeping Shimako guessing how she really feels, right? Is this some kind of game between them or do they need to work on their people skill?

are you talking about marimite? i certainly hope it's not the last ep. the next ep is ep 9, and the season should normally end at 13. from the ep 9 preview that episode shouldn't be offering any form of closure for the season to end.

since we're talking about "ending", i'd like to throw out this question again: does anyone know or have any idea at all when the marimite novels will end? i know this question has been asked a few times here and there in this thread, but no one thus far has answered it or attempt a guess. does that mean no one has a clue?

CelestialLegends : no the next episode is not the end :-) it's really hard to know there are only 13 episodes.... but a japanese friend tells me that a rumor says a second season can be aired this hill. but it's a RUMOR !!!!

Kisekinoumi : gomen, I don't know about the end of marimite. I didn't read them.

About androids : In "Mezzo DSA" anime, which has recently been licensed so I won't see the end (snif), in ep.6, a human falls in love with an android. When he realises he was taken for a fool, he crashes every thing, including his loved one. Then he 's sad. :)

Is Yumi an android? Special android with lots of facial expression. It's a premium android ;)

Not likely to be ending soon. My prediction is that the novel will run another 2 or 3 years before conclusion (if any). Volume 16 is comprised of several side stories that published on Cobalt so vol. 15 is technically the most recent one on the main story and it's not even a full year from the time when Yumi first came to Yamayurikai. With Cobalt being a bi-monthly magazine and the author constantly writing side stories to fill in the blanks, I will not be surprised if it takes more than 3 years to finish the story. :)

lordwu,
Do you think the anime is too short to contain 8 novels ?
Does it miss many things in anime ?

Actually, I would like to know if the anime is really different from the novels. I wonder whether the novel shows us more honest relations, or it is, on the contrary, as anime : it shows us only ambiguous relations.

I really want to read it. but I definitively can't except if it is translated into English.

There are many shorts that were done in Cobalt magazine. Some of these shorts involve when Yumi were still in her first year. However, there wasn't enough shorts to compile then into one novel yet.

So even if Yumi became a second year student by Volume 10, that necessarily does not mean that further volumes would be in her older state. "Variety Gift" was technically a "gift by the author to the readers" in a fashion of compiling past Marimite short stories into one novel.

And for your interest: Japanese school year starts in the beginning of April - when cherry blossoms bloom.

oh... so that's the case. and, oh... so that's the title of volume 16. it didn't occur to me at all that the katagana read "variety". thanks so much for the explanation.

if school starts in april, that means by Valentine day Yumi's first year was almost over. very interesting. so when are school Bunkasais usually held in Japan? around summer, right? i'm asking because that's when Yumi accepted the rosary.

Actually, it's:
バラエティ "Variety"
ギフト "Gift"

As for "bunkasai" (Culture Festival), they are usually done in Autumn. Schools vary on when they do their "bunkasai" but usually it is revolves around Autumn as the National Cultural Day (holiday) is in the Autumn Season (November)

i saw the "gift" katagana, actually. it was the "variety" katagana i was having trouble with. (i wouldn't attempt to read the novels if i couldn't even see "gift" :))

would that mean Yumi was prolly made a seour in the autumn?

You know that the school year is going to end soon by valentine day, because Yumi is worried about the graduation of the Roses. She keeps wondering about Sei, and what she'll do without her when she's in high school.

So, on 14th of february, school year is almost done.
What about the school breaks? Holidays? Do students have several free weeks in march?

So, on 14th of february, school year is almost done.
What about the school breaks? Holidays? Do students have several free weeks in march?

A very rough breakdown of the Japanese school/work year with holidays are:

January 1: New Year's Day
January 15: Seijin no Hi
You come back from Winter Vacation around the first (work) or second (school) week of January.

February 3: Setsubun (not National Holiday)
February 11: Kenkoku Kinenbi
February 14: St. Valentine's Day (not National Holiday)
This is usually around the time students start to cram as this season is also known as "exam season." High school and University entrance exams begins around this time. So does job interviews.

March 3: Hinamatsuri ("Girl's Day")
March 14: White Day (most definitely a holiday made by corporate-commericialism)
March 20: Vernal Equinox
Cherry blossoms start to bloom. Graduation season around the end of March. Varies by school, but usually second or third week in March. You have Spring Break until the next school year starts, which is...

April 1: Start of Japanese Fiscal Year. So if you were in the second year in high school at the end of March, you come back from Spring Break and you are a third year student. This is usually also the time where you are officially become a corporate worker if you were selected for hiring. If you already work, this is the time you get a promotion/pay raise.
April 29: Midori no Hi
Green Day marks the first day of several consecutive National Holidays to early May. Rather than having you coming to school or work one day and not the next, they call this "Golden Week" where the schools and work give the whole week off.

May 3: Constitution Day
May 4: Kokumin no Kyujitsu (since there was a National Holiday on the 3rd and the 5th, the government decided to create this holiday so people can have the entire week off)
May 5: Children's Day (Boy's Day)

June - no holiday, but a very humid summer season begins

July 7 - Tanabata (not a National Holiday)
July 20 - Umi no Hi (Ocean Day)
July is also known in Japan as Typhoon Season. This is when several typhoons start to strike Japan. Students begin summer vacation usually around the third week of July. As most people would know, this is the time summer festivals (fireworks, etc) begin - starting with Tanabata.

August - no holidays. However, along with July, this month is filled with summer matsuris and Obon festivals. School usually resumes end of August, early September

September 15 - Keirou no Hi (Respect-the-Elderly Day)
September 23 - Autumnal Equinox

October 10 - Taiiku no Hi (Sport's Day)

November 3 - Bunka no Hi (Culture Day)
November 15 - Shichi go san (not a National Holiday)
November 23 - Kinrou Kansha no Hi (Labor Day)

December 23 - Emperor's Birthday
December 24 - Christmas Eve (not a National Holiday)
December 25 - Christmas (not a National Holiday)
December 31 - New Year's Eve
Winter vacation usually begins before Emperor's birthday, usually on the third week of December.

Thanks a lot kj1980 for the comprehensive explanation about the dates.
It explains a lot of things indeed. So, by the end of march they have approx. 2 weeks break down. Laurore31, as you can see, it's COMPLETELY different than the french school system. We have lots of holidays.

(not as detailled as yours because right now I am at work. I may edit it later today - it's based on 2003 school year calendar, because I don't have a 2004 one under the hand. So, usually, a break starts on friday evening and ends on sunday evening. School days are Monday-Friday, school hours are usually 8:00AM-5:00PM with one hour break at noon :-)

France School Schedule :
5 sept : school year begins
25 oct-2 nov : 1 week break "La toussaint"
21 dec-5 jan : 2 weeks break "Vacances de Noël - "Noël" stands for "Christmas")
16 feb - 2march : 2 weeks break "vacances d'hiver" (hiver : winter)
13 april - 27 april : 2 weeks off (vacances de Pâques)
during may : lots of single days off
may-june : exams season (depending on the grade)
1st july-5sept : 9 weeks break

In France there is no "hiring" season. If students are to be hired, it occures usually during June, and if not, during september because students like to have the holidays before they enter their active life. So, yes, France is a lasy country :) but we're not proud

[EDIT]AH lots of grammar mistakes but I'm in a hurry. Check back later boss is watching me

considering the school day is on average 3 hours more than america's school day, i guess it seems reasonable. and sports? do kids in france do sport activities during the 8-5 school hours or after? because athletes here stay at school until 5-5:30 everday, and go to practices on saturdays. likewise, kids who do performing arts, drama, symphony must come two occasional rehearsals and saturday recitals -_- i suppose american kids arent that lazy... ^^

I know that french students have quite long days. I mean, teenagers between16 and 18 years old which is the range of the kids of Mariamite. Well, they work something like 35 hours a week.

Sport is included in those 35 hours. When I was in Lycée (school for 16-18 years old) I used to do 4 hours of sport a week. Usually a full morning or a full afternoon. (swiming, athletism, volley ball, football (soccer), handball, basket ball)

I really don't know how it works for athletes. In France, it's not like in USA where you go to university to do sport. Here, you go to sports school. It's a complete different school system than the "learning" system.

After you graduate high school, when you enter university (18 and +) the time schedule is different and it depends on the studies. I don't know for art/drama/music. I did scientific studies and I had 40 hours+ of school + homework + exams.

Anyway, I wanted a comparison with the year schedule more than the day schedule.

[EDIT]Oh, yeah, about schools, in France I don't know if there's BOYS SCHOOLS or GIRLS SCHOOLS anymore. I don't remember seeing in my whole life.

Yes in France there are boys schools and girls schools. most of them are catholic.

Sports in france are definitvly different from american school. we don't have team and competition, in france it's just to be in good health. if you want to do sports in France, you must integrate a club apart from the school.

the holidays between several countries are interesting !

Catholic school, yes, I was in a catholic school that used to be a girls only school.
But by the time when I joined the school it was already mixed girls/boys. It's probably really rare nowadays.

Sports activities are usually done on week end or on wednesday afternoon. Laurore31 is right, sport competition is never done in the school system. It's always in extra-school clubs. Sometimes, you can join school clubs for sport. I joined a volley ball club in my high school and we did some competition. But usually, to do competition, you need to join your city club. It's a public club and you pay a small amount of money to participate to costs.

would you mind explaining that a little? do you mean that there aren't schools like Lillian in Japan but there are schools like that in France?
so does that mean Lillian is a European style school that's located in Japan?

in fact, the japanese girl told me to read "Joshi Kousei" manga to understand the difference between Lillian's and japanese schools.
and she told me that Lillian high school is just an older school, and not european school for the staff. For her, Marimite is a revival of old good retro shoujo cultures. ^_^

Yes, it's kind of sad and angsty (is that too spoiler-y? Would people prefer that stuff like this be put in spoiler tags too or just details about what happens?). Not in a "someone's mother is dying of cancer" way, more like in an unrequited love way, as was mentioned in the preview for the ep.

Okay, here's a (hopefully) short and sweet summary of ep 9:

It turns out that Mifuyu, the girl who Yumi met in the greenhouse in ep 8, went to kindergarten at Lillian for a while. While there, she idolized Sachiko, who was (as we might expect) extremely talented but aloof, although she did do certain things to try to fit in (such as taking the bus to school, kind of). However, Mifuyu's father was transferred and she had to leave Lillian.
One day, Mifuyu was swinging standing up and fell off the swing. Sachiko scolded her for not following the rules, but gave her a handkerchief to put on the wound. So before Mifuyu left Lillian, she gave Sachiko back the handkerchief along with some "thank-you" chocolates from her mother.
Ten years later, Mifuyu passed the entrance exam for Lillian's high school and ended up in the same class as Sachiko. Unfortunately, Sachiko didn't remember her. :/ But she was happy just being able to be near Sachiko and to be able to see her again.
The rest of the story takes place on Valentine's Day; a lot of it is retold from Mifuyu's point of view. Mifuyu has made chocolate for Sachiko, but doesn't know if Sachiko will accept it because Sachiko won't accept chocolate from people unless there's a reason for her to do so (like in the case of the "thank-you" chocolates before).
As Mifuyu is entering the school that day, she sees Sachiko ahead of her and follows her. She is curious because Sachiko is going in an unusual direction, probably to hide her card for the treasure hunt. Mifuyu sees Sachiko hide her card in the greenhouse, by the Rosa chinensis plant.
Mifuyu digs up Sachiko's card and puts it in her bag. For the rest of the day, she is debating over what to do. She feels dishonest about the way she got the card, but doesn't want to give up this chance to spend time with Sachiko and doesn't think anyone would think to look for it in the greenhouse anyway.
The contest starts, and she goes to the greenhouse, thinking that she should put it back, but is still not 100% sure that that is what she should do. She starts to cry, and then Yumi walks in. She quickly shoves the card back in her bag.
We see the conversation between Mifuyu and Yumi from Mifuyu's point of view this time. At first she thinks that Sachiko must have told Yumi where the card was, but then she realizes that Yumi figured it out on her own and that she has "lost" to Yumi. Then the time for the treasure hunt runs out and Yumi goes back to the courtyard.
Mifuyu has changed her opinion of Yumi--she now knows why Sachiko chose her. At the end of the episode, we see that Mifuyu has cut her hair to match her change in attitude, and Yumi doesn't even recognize her when she sees her.
There are 3 other important scenes in this episode:
The scene at the end of ep 8 is continued, with Yumi and Sachiko deciding on Sunday for their date. They decide that Yumi will choose where to go. Then they leave together.
Eriko asks Youko about the entrance exam that Youko took that day, and Youko says it didn't go well. But, Youko thinks that that day is the best day of her life because her dream (the one about the Rose Mansion being full of students) came true. Rei asks Eriko if it would be all right for her to stop by Eriko's house that night. Eriko (of course, who would turn down Rei's homemade chocolate truffles?)
says yes. Then Yoshino yells at Rei for hiding her card in a place that was so hard to find (it was inside a book about the Edo period). Rei tries to tell her that they will talk about it later, but Yoshino storms off.
Sei and Shimako are walking outside together (on their way out of the campus for the day, I'm guessing). Sei says that it's cold and offers Shimako some of the chocolates she got from Shizuka (Rosa Canina) to warm them up. Shimako tells Sei that she's being insensitive/dense. Sei asks if Shimako is jealous, and Shimako tells her that it is Shizuka's feelings that she is thinking of--how would Shizuka feel about Sei sharing the chocolates she gave her with Shimako? Sei says that she has learned something from Shimako and is happy to have a petite soeur who has such strong character. Shimako gets upset and says that once Sei is gone, she won't be able to be like that anymore (that last bit is my supposition; she cuts off after "when you're gone, I-"). Sei tells her that when spring comes, Shimako will be a second-year, new first-year students will come, and Shimako will soon realize that it feels natural without Sei there. Then Sei comments on how good the marble cake was, and takes Shimako's hand and puts it in her pocket along with her own. They start to walk again, and Shimako lays her head on Sei's shoulder. Such a sweet and sad scene . . .

I'm more interested in next week's episode... "Ibara no Mori" was one of my favorite "Marimite" novels. From past episodes, I am certain that the next episode would cover the first half of "Ibara no Mori." Talk about out-of-sequence... Well, since it was February last month, so I guess they wanted to show "Valentinus no Okurimono" instead.

hmm...although I did want to see the short where Rosa Foetida and Shimadu Yoshino were thinking deeply about Rei's "weird" Valentine's present. Or, Sachiko-sama buying blue jeans and experiencing her first fast-food hamburger on Yumi-chan's date.

Thank you!! I was never able to resist anyway and I welcome spoilers, especially for this series. It seems that anime left out A LOT of material, compared to the novel. I have this impression from people who have read the novel. It is necessary for me to know more, from these spoilers, to truly understand this series. I have to say that the spoilers really help and make this story even more interesting. Great job, pkgirl163 and thank you again.

Eriko was expecting the same truffles as last year but she got a large box this year and Yoshino, whose valentine choco from Rei was getting larger and larger each year, got a small box instead. Naturally, both of them were wondering if Rei made a mistake and mixed up their presents. :)

I just watched the first 8 fansubbed episodes in the last couple days and then the 23 pages of discussion in this thread. ^_^ Anyway, so some of my thoughts here will be old ones.

I thought that this series resembled Brother, Dear Brother a lot more than Utena. I think it's just the Rose Garden in both that seem similar, other than the yuri, of course. In Brother, Dear Brother, it's the entire girls' school, sorority-like atmosphere that seems really similar to Maria-sama. (btw, I checked the Technogirls website, and they updated it last week stating that they're almost done w/ the last fansub tape of Brother, Dear Brother. woo woo!)

Regarding the lesbianism, there was a whole bunch of it in Brother, Dear Brother also. I remember there as a note in one of the Technogirls tapes, trying to explain why almost everyone seemed to be a lesbian at the all girls school. They said that a lot of it really wasn't lesbianism, but just a hero/cult thing that often develops at these girls schools. I tend to think its the same thing here for the most part. And I think I'll keep to that unless one of the characters says it blatantly or you see some real "action" like you do in shounen-ai anime. ;) I don't see how Yumi and Sachiko can be in love already. They barely seem to know each other. Maybe the story here is just too compressed, and they can't develop it as well as BDB where you see that girl smoking St Juste's cigarette. Of course, I haven't seen the arc in year 2, so maybe that will make a difference.

Btw, does anyone else find Yumi annoying? She just seems to be a nosy goody two-shoes and crybaby to me. The other women just seem more interesting to me, especially Sachiko.

I have been thinking along the same lines. I have also seen much of Brother, Dear Brother. There was a note like the one you mention on the website I believe.

There is nothing of the stylization or pace of Utena in this series. I think the style goes back a lot farther than that. Utena doesn't really have as much school life as the other two shows either.

I think it is important for this sort of show to have a character like Yumi be the center. If she knew too much she wouldn't have to think so much about it - and where's the impact in the exposition then? Yumi is coming along more or less like Nanako did in BDB - she is learning to stand up for herself and so on.

I think Yumi has played an important role here, even if she is just for comedy relief. I don't mean that she is; I am only saying that it would be good enough but she is so much more. Most audience should be able to relate to her instead of other girls because, in a sense, Yumi is more "real-life like." But this may be personal preference since some people see anime as a way of escaping real life. Therefore, it really isn't necessary to have a hero like that in a show. Also, for people who usually prefer action series but also happen to like this one may find Yumi not so appealing. I am just giving you some examples. Anyway, it's OK that people have different opinions.

Yumi is the best. Everyone know that. The ones who think she is dumb or just too shy, or anything else can't see that, she's clever, always find by herself the meaning of every thing (she sometimes asks for advices, which is clever as well). She never annoyes anyone. She never says bad words to the other birds (who sometimes deserve a good kick in the ass). She's humble and polite. She's single and she doesn't smoke and she EVEN knows how to make chocolates ! She's PERFECT. So, now what, some people will think she's TOO perfect? hehe.

As heartbreaking as it may be, I'm very interested to see what percolates under that seemingly incurable flirt's impertable aura of confident aplomb. Where does it stem from? Oh me too, from the moment I saw her smiling all Sei-like in the intro-clip and then turn her head away and look sad.

Of all the roses she so far has had most of the spotlight. Foetida seems to be quite eccentric and Chinesis strikes me as being very level-headed and a future leader. Wish we'd learn more about them as well before they graduate

About ep. 9 : well, boring ep 9 (the eps I prefered were 1st & 2nd for the story. All the other eps are not as good as the first two eps, IMO).
BORING EPISODE #9. The story is stuck. What the hell are they doing. I thought we were going to see the 1/2 day rendez-vous.

Anybody noticed the special efforts done in the final scene (19:00 -> end) between Sei and Shimako? Very expressive faces, every frame being drawn. It was very impressive. The only good part of the ep 9 !!!!!!!!!!

Yeah....
It's not just about the frames. The animation quality of ep 9 just seems to drop quite significantly. Everybody's face seems disfigured somehow. Like in some scenes, forehead is too big or the hair is too big, not to mention that the proportion of whole face is just strange. In the scene of Sei and Shimako, even the proportion of hands are not right. Also, in the beginning scene, the color of roses seems different and so does the color of background.
They change the music.... but the violin sounds just awful.

AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

Sorry for this. I really hope that animation quality of next ep will be better, much better. Certainly don't want to see the whole series just turn out to be terrible because of the animation flaw.

Yeah, the characters looked like in the anime "Daphne in the brillant blue" (with small breast though ;) )In that anime, they have big forehead, strange eyes (way too big). Still, I appreciate the effort done to the Sei scene.

aww, I liked the animation during the Sei and Shimako scene. It was kinda flowy and really dramatic...I dunno how to describe it, but it was definately neat. I was feeling it

And Sachiko-sama was even a refined kindergardener!..shes so perfect!! I love her more and more each episode

I agree that chibi-Sachiko was brilliant. She is by far my favorite character. Such contradictions in one character! Even as a kindergartener, she was a somewhat sour little princess. Youko has managed to soften her up a bit, but she still gives off an air of old-money ennui. Strangely enough, it's precisely this that makes her so popular with the other girls.
I liked episode 9. It gives us an opportunity to see Sachiko, and Yumi, from the eyes of an outsider. And I'm not sure if it was intentional, but I found the whole thing hilarious. From the beginning, with Mifuyu's room plastered with stalker photos of Sachiko. Don't her parents think it's - well - not normal?
There is such a disconnect between Mifuyu's impressions of Sachiko and Sachiko-sama herself. At the end, Mifuyu thinks to herself that essentially, that Sachiko is a good judge of character. (Haven't seen the sub, so I don't know how Lillilicious translated it.) Nothing could be further from the truth! In episode 8, Sachiko had misread Yumi completely, and made her cry. Sachiko walks through school in a half-daze, not remembering who she talked to earlier in the day. And she lies! She lied to the council about knowing Yumi. And she is obsessed with appearances! And the only reason she chose Yumi as her soeur is because she was the first first-year student that she literally bumped into when she needed one! Now don't get me wrong. Sachiko is growing fond of Yumi, gradually. But in many ways, she is far different from the stereotypical elder sister. She isn't even your classic cool bad girl. She is unique.
Getting back to Mari-mite, the kindergarten years... The combination of Mifuyu's dark narration and Sachiko's behaviour as a kindergartener is hilarious. Like I said, a serious disconnect! As Sachiko greets her fellow students in the morning with a sour face, Mifuyu is awestruck with admiration. Sachiko dancing as a tiny ballerina with her haughty air is priceless. And when everyone applauds her performance... blank stoneface! And seeing her eat her sandwich with a knife and fork! O My Gawd! And as everyone around her gasps, SHE IGNORES THEM!
Call me perverse, but I love Sachiko.

>.< like a ghost?? she's not like a ghost!!! everyone has their own circumstances and according to her past, it seems like she wasn't given the opportunity to hang out with other girls and have fun. thus she only has time to master ballet, piano, etc. I don't know about Sachiko growing more fond of her, but I can definitely see their bond growing stronger. Which doesnt mean that Sachiko could have any feelings for Yumi. ;_;

Okay, episode 9 settles it, Sei is my favorite Marimite character. *points to siggy*

Hum is she fond of Yumi? I don't know. The fans of Sachiko will say so. Still she is pretty cold hearted. She's like a ghost.
I think it is obvious she is fond of Yumi, especially by the chocolate episode...she believes Yumi when Yumi says the card wasn't there, she accepts Yumi's chocolates where she accepted no one else's, and she pretends she picked a good chocolate to eat when it was actually a bad chocolate.

Sachiko and Yumi are opposites in this respect: Sachiko finds it difficult to show emotion, particularily towards other people. You'll never see her running to greet anyone with a big grin on her face, but that doesn't mean her feelings for others can't/don't run as deep.

To avoid giving out, um, ep 2 spoilers, and ep 10's preview spoilers.

Just some speculation on my part about where Sachiko is coming from.

"Failure is not an option. Failure is not an option. Failure is not an..."

I get a feeling that it's a mantra running through Sachiko's mind, one that's been there since as long as she can recall.

The only daughter, perhaps the only child on her side of The Family. It is her duty and burden to 'represent' her branch of the family to the rest of the vulture-relatives who scrutinise her daily for any faults. Faults, however minor, that will later be titteringly brought up from behind imported lacy, scented handkerchieves, under the false pretense of concern, for the sole purpose of shaming her immediate family.

Large family, many factions vying for a bigger cut of that old money Sachiko reeks of. The pressure to perform must be tremendous. And Youko probably sensed it.

"She never had a break."

And offering no explanation, she tells Sachiko to drop all of her private tutoring, gives her odd jobs to perform for the Yamayurikai and incidently giving her a good excuse to get out from under the All Seeing Eye of The Family.

No, of course she's not perfect. She just has to look as if she is. Granted, she doesn't have to be while she's in school, but it's probably a natural defense mechanism and a habit that's hard to break.

"She'll do anything that's expected of her."

Including whatever it takes to seem perfect. Cover up, gloss over, adjust that tie, there! Infallible.

Yumi is far from perfect. I wonder, does that make Sachiko feel safe to relax some of that rigid control around her? Give in a little to that mirth that's trying to bubble up?

I really liked episode 9. When I grow up I wanna have the same magical power Sei has to suddenly increase the framerate in scenes I appear in.

I like how the story flits like a kingfisher from person to person, curious beak peeping underneath the still waters of the placid school atmosphere to see a little more than what's so apparent to everyone else.

Next scheduled dip will be in Sei waters. Looking forward to it.

after ep 9. now im really having second thoughts about marimete. at first ep 1 really believe that yumi-chan doesnt even know what a 'lesbian' is... it's like.. she's just caught up with deep admiration for sachiko- who just happened to be a girl.

however, during that valentine ep, the part where shizuka told yumi that she's giving sei chocolates and yumi says something that pertains to ' even if rosa gigantea doesnt return her feelings, she's still giving her chocolates.' so, i think it's safe to say that yumi knows what a girl-girl relationship is. ( since i think rosa canina's *romantic* love for sei is somewhat obvious) i mean, she wasnt even reacting when she said those words, it came out normally. in a sense that she wasnt surprised or disgusted. so there's a possibility of 'romantic' love after all...or maybe im just obsessed. *sighs*

man this anime is so frustrating, why cant shoujo ai creators just put up a headsign that says ' there is SHOUJO AI in this anime' or something like that. it would just save us from arguing and analyzing things and it would defintely earn them more fans... or at least that's what my crap of a brain tells me. ^.^

there...just my two cents.

oh and before i forget...

SACHIKO...you rock!!!! ^___^

Man, have you seen the list of people who wanted to give chocolates to Sachiko in ep. 9? Like 30 girls.

I think that it's strange, but if al of them are lesbian, really, Japanese population may decrease pretty badly in the next 10 years because ALL of the girls wanted to date the en bouton. All of them wanted the date (have you seen the people gathering at the game launch??)

I don't believe at all that's it's lesbian love. Not a single second. I think it's pure friendship. Call me naive if you want, but until now, you have to prove every thing.

Yes, Sei take his soeur hand in her pocket. Still, girls do thing that are strange. They sleep in the same bed, they do "pijama parties" etc... you know better than me, I'm not a girl. Just let the anime reveal what it has to reveal. Be patient. Either it's love or friendship, what's the difference as long as we like watching this anime. It's excatly the same in the end. Feelings, pation, admiration, love, etc...

Someone read the books and could confirm?

SACHIKO GET YOURSELF A HEART ;)

im not saying that all those girls are lesbians. i was particularly aiming at yumi-chan. i suggested that yumi-chan isnt that innocent about lesbians. so there's just a slight possibity about realizations and all that. so far sachiko and yumi's relationship is platonic...though i would love to see more.

and yes those 'other students' might be just fans. but im betting my butt there is at least a single lesbian in that crowd. hehe...

Oups I didn't try to read the Katakana before my first answer.
So, I tried later, and it said (first line) "Rozario A ...200"
Rozario B ...100
Rozario C ...6 (??)
Isn't it the price?

what is the symbol next to the figures?

Nope. It's part of a giveaway sweepstakes. Japan has a lot of sweepstakes where you send in a postcard to the posted address. The postcards are then drawn at random by the place doing the sweepstakes...and if you are lucky you get a prize.

In this case, you send a postcard to the publishers, and 200 lucky people who sent in a postcard will get Rozario A, 100 people will get Rozario B...and so on.

Some people in Japan are "sweepstakes fans" who actually make their living by sending in postcards and winning prizes. Usually, there is no limit on how much one person can send in postcards for a prize so you can send 500 postcards if you want to increase your chances to win that prize. Of course, you have to pay your own stamps.

On a personal note, I send in such postcard-sweepstakes sometimes to something that seems interesting. Several years ago, I won a 5-speed mountain bike which has to be the largest prize that I have ever won on these kinds of sweepstakes!! However, most of the time I actually win something is that I sent in a postcard for something awesome like a new DVD player, but they end up drawing me (well at least my name was drawn so that's good) for something peculiar like a tribal mask from Venezuela.

The size of the dolls are about 55 cm. Let me know if you are interested to see them posted here.

Now, for a harsh fact.
There are 7 Marimite DVDs to be released. The first one contains one episode and the rests have 2 episodes each. Doing the math, there are only 13 episodes of Marimite. There is another Limited Edition DVD which contain the first 3 episodes in one package plus extras.

Um, alough I'm sure lesbiaism is not the reason, Japan is having population issues due to a dramatically decreasing birth rate...

Anyway, it was a good episode, I saw it very late at night right after I downloaded it, so I wasn't in my usual mind when watching... but I enjoyed it, mifuyu was just a reference character device to show Sachiko's past. I thought it was effectively done, and as I said, I enjoyed the episode.

i'm glad ep 11 continues the story, i was worried the anime would just leave it at that at the end of ep 10. i've not looked at this anime as having shoujo-ai at all, just peer admiration that happens in all-girls school, but ep 11 preview is certainly hinting otherwise, at least for Rosa Gigantea.

hum just to clear this up somewhat, it hasn't been actually STATED that ALI PROJECT is recording FOR marimite, it only suggests that they are(correct me if i'm wrong). the blog from their site never mentions what show they're recording for. it COULD be for ANOTHER show, but who knows? so it's still not for certain that there's going to be a season two of marimite (but i certainly would like one, then we can work on it some more!)
