hum just to clear this up somewhat, it hasn't been actually STATED that ALI PROJECT is recording FOR marimite, it only suggests that they are(correct me if i'm wrong). the blog from their site never mentions what show they're recording for. it COULD be for ANOTHER show, but who knows? so it's still not for certain that there's going to be a season two of marimite (but i certainly would like one, then we can work on it some more!)

so yea, there's my two cents. :uhoh:

You're a bit late. They DID mention it, but they changed their entry on their blog page since they were apparently not authorized to release such information.

This has happened before in the past regarding Mari-mite.

A voice actress revealed in her online diary that she would be playing Shiori in episode 10 and 11 (which she did). Hours later the entry was erased.

"Looks like Ali Project might have let the cat out of the bag a bit early regarding the second season of MariMite, 'cos when I checked the same diary entry today, it now referred to "a certain BGM" instead of the previous "BGM for Maria-sama ga Miteru" ^_^"

Maybe what you saw is the edited post already...

Okay, here's a short summary of ep 10:
There is a rumor going around at Lillian that the book "Ibara no Mori" ("Forest of Thorns") was written by Rosa Gigantea, mainly because the author's name is Suga Sei (the "Sei" is the same as Sei's name), but also because something happened in Sei's past, something that no one will tell Yumi about.
The story is about two girls who are very close and who decide to commit suicide together (so cliche!) when adults won't let them be together anymore. However, only one of the girls actually dies; the narrator of the book wakes up in the hospital and discovers that while she is still alive, her friend (Kaori) is dead.
Anyway, Yumi and Sachiko go buy copies of the book, but Sachiko tells Yumi she's not sure they should read it. Yumi reads it anyway, and she and Yoshino decide to try and find out if Sei really wrote it. First, they ask Shimako, but she doesn't know. When they invite her to go with them to ask Sei, she declines (yet another example of the "distance" between Sei and Shimako?).
Just then, an announcement comes over the loudspeaker: Sei is being summoned to the Student Discipline Room. Yumi waits for her outside, and when she asks her about the rumors (after Sei has hugged her very cutely! :D), Sei doesn't seem to know anything about the book. After Sei goes inside, Yoshino shows up, and then Minako comes by and tries to get information about the rumor from Yumi and Yoshino. She tells them that because Lillian students aren't allowed to have (part-time) jobs, Sei could be expelled if she really did write the book. Just then Sei comes out of the room and tells the three of them that she didn't write the book.
Then Sei, Yumi, and Yoshino head back to the Rose Mansion, and Sei tells everyone else in the Yamayurikai that she didn't write the book. After the meeting, Sei asks Sachiko if she can "borrow" Yumi and Rei if she can "borrow" Yoshino, promising that the 3 of them will clean up. After the others have left, Sei borrows Yumi's copy of the book and sends Yumi and Yoshino to the cafeteria. When they come back, Sei says that the situation in the novel really was similar to what happened to her a year ago: Kubo Shiori, her best friend whom she loved more than anyone else, left her at Christmas time. The big difference was that Shiori didn't die, she just transferred to another school.
Yoshino suspects that it was Shiori who wrote the novel and so she, Rei, and Yumi go to Cosmos, the company that published the novel, to find out. When they get there, they find that the author is an old woman who went to Lillian in her youth. So although the story did take place at Lillian, it happened a long time ago and wasn't related to Sei at all.
At the very end of the episode, Sei stands alone by the window in the second-floor room of the Yamayurikai, and remembers her first meeting with Shiori (we only see a couple seconds of it, but from the preview it seems that the next ep will have more flashbacks of Sei and Shiori).

Okay, here's a short summary of ep 10:

See, that just proved my point.

When it comes to shoujo-ai in anime, there is no such thing as happy ending. :frustrated:

don't even know if I should put that with spoiler tag but anyone who reads my spoiler would guess the outcome of ep 10 or 11, so....

pkgirl163 ohhhhh I shouldn't have read it ! but it's wonderfull .... ho i'm waiting for the raw episode but... i think i will wait for the subbed episode.

i'm agree with guest... i really wonder how the serie will end... but i'm just a bit sure that the second season is in progress. the page, even if it's modified, can't just talk about things which won't append. it is just too early to be revealed ; maybe i'm dreaming, maybe not. ^_^

pkgirl when i read your spoiler, i really thought that the series will become more and more serious, more and more painfull... Sei just wants to cry... and she hid it by smiling...

It's more and more likely that the first season will not include the graduation arc, unless they want to rush through the whole thing. Probably the whole 2nd season will be about the graduation arc and tells the story of the 3 Rosas. :uhoh: I guess we'll know where the series ends next Wednesday.

i wish for a good end. i really don't want this series finishes brutally. just a good end.

Laurore, you have a great web site BTW.

I too have just seen Episode 10, Forest of Thorns.

I have a sore neck...

Insanely obvious Utena reference to start. Utena OP image. The Art Deco-ish standard OP tableaux & Yumi's accompanying narration are missing! Viewer (me) suffers whiplash.

It'll soon be Christmas... ? Like the narrative structure of the first episode, this series has slipped back in time. And I, like Rosa Gigantea, is mildly taken aback. The viewer says "Christmas? But it was just Valentine's in the previous episode. So when are we going to see the post Valentine's date between Yumi & Sachiko?" Sei says "I don't like Christmas." I get whiplash trying to digest Sei's statement and the fact that it is December again.

Then, hearing Yumi's thoughts about how Sachiko feels about reading THE book, I am getting whiplashed some more trying to remember at what stage Yumi & Sachiko's relationship was two months before Valentine's. This is a relationship that's difficult to get a grip on under the best of circumstances, and they've thrown this COMPLETELY UNEXPECTED curve. Cosmos? Cobalt?! The hints are coming fast. And everyone thought this was a slow-paced show. As if! Then more revelations about Sei (maybe...) and by the time we get to Yumi's scene when she is crying while on the phone, at the five and a half minute mark, my sarcastic nature kicks in, and I have decided (for the hundredth time) that I LOVE this show. I'm laughing out-loud at the breakneck (sorry for the pun) pace of this Goddamned show. What must the Virgin Mary think about the events that transpire in Lillian! This episode has elements that seem like drama, but it's paced like a comedy. The use of wipes to transition between Yumi and Yoshino during their phone conversation seems to reinforce this what-happens-next-type pacing. Or so I thought...

After the revelation of the contents of the novel, and its story of attempted suicide, the episode seems to take on a darker tone. The tone stays dark, and gets darker step-by-almost-imperceptible-step, even when Sei makes her most blatant tease-statement yet (about taking off Yumi's uniform and playing with her.) Partly a function of the fact that the earlier suspicions that Sei's playful demeanor hides a painful secret now seem to be confirmed. (Question: Just how long are these novels anyway, and how many minutes did it take Sei to read it if she finished it while Yumi and Yoshino were eating ramen in the cafeteria?)

An homage to a previous work, a novel within a novel, a flashback within a flashback, this story is nothing if not structurally interesting.

It's not surprising since Ibara no Mori IS the 3rd volume and IS out of order in terms of timeline. Not quite sure why they switched the order, probably because they want to have a valentine episode on valentine day. But, whatever..

I do hope that they won’t mess up timeline like this in the second season, if we are going to have one. It’s bad enough that the anime is so compressed from the novels. I have to read spoilers from people who read novels to truly understand the depth of this story.
I thought that as popular as this series was now, they wouldn’t have problem with budget, hence, the quality of animation. It just keeps slipping. Ep 10 is better than ep 9, but still cannot compare with the beginning eps. While the drama and voice acting remain great, it seems as all other things need major improvement. :(

It’s highly possible that all these flaws will kill the popularity of the show, despite of good plot.

I am waiting for the subbed version…….

Lani, I haven't seen a fansite in english for marimite.
Since you can read japanese, the best bet is to use marimite search engine:

I am thinking to set-up a fansite, however my job has taken up much of my free time.
If you want to set up a fansite, I will help you to provide scans from magazines.

Maybe we just need Laurore31 to translate her French site.

the visitors of my site are mainly Japanese or French. Only 6% of them are English thus for the moment, we don't think of translating it, but perhaps later.
Don't tell me that's because the site is in french. I'm french and I visit Japanese sites as much as English sites and I use an online translator if I need it.

Do not take it badly. gomen gomen.

Actually, if we translate the site :
- it take more more time to translate it. (don't you think my english is very bad ? lol. Even if a friend can make it, for him it will take too much time)
- When I want to make an update, I will have to change the translation too. it take too much time and work.
- the french page will not be visited any more ! :-( and this, i don't want. I work very hard for this site by choosing the good french words / expressions, searching information or pics, think about the future update, think about the design... so i will be surely disappointed if the french page is not visited any more.

and if I ask Lililicious team to translate the episodes in french, do you think they will make it ? Actually, I just really very happy and REALLY grateful that they translate this series, even if it's in english :-) so, please, you should do the same for my site.

EDIT : we are interviewing a Japanese woman fan of this series the interview is inevitably in English since she doesn't speak French. I will thus put this interview on the site in English and in French. if you want.

Anyways just seen ep10.

This episode was all about Sei, my favorite of the Roses. I just love it when she flirts with Yumi. "Don't worry, We won't take off our uniforms and start playing." heh, Now what could she mean by that? hm...:p. Anyways, I was a bit surprised that Sei wasn't the one who wrote the book. I thought for sure that it was her until she flat out tells Yumi and Yoshino. Oh well. The next episode looks like we get to know more about Sei's lover...uh friend. :)

Damn, they really are going to end the series at valentine day arc....

Well, it's a good thing in a way that the story will not be rushed through. They might use the entire second season (prediction: 13 eps) for the graduation arc, which would be excellent since we get to see lots more about the 3 graduating Rosa. :)

Okay, here goes nothing...

The description of ep 11 is incorrect, it talks about Yumi and the others finding out the author of "The Forest of Thorns," which happened in ep 10.
Here's a translation of the one from the TV Tokyo page instead:
When the current Rosa Gigantea, Satou Sei, was a second-year student and was worrying about her future, a girl named Kubou Shiori appeared in front of her (i.e., appeared in her life). Sei-sama fell in love with her at first sight.
Sei-sama's dates with Shiori become longer, and she starts to neglect her duties at the Rose Mansion. The situation weighs heavily on Youko-sama (the current Rosa Chinensis), who tells Sei-sama about Shiori's desired future career, but...

This is not mentioned there (so don't read if you don't want to be spoiled extra ;)), but Shiori wants to become a nun.

Okay, here is the description of ep 12:
Title: First Date Triangle
I get to go on a date with Onee-sama! But I can't decide what we should do on the date... I tried to get advice from Yoshino-san and Shimako-san of the Yamayurikai, but both of them were too busy worrying about other things. And so now it's the day of the date, and I still don't know what we're going to do.

And the description of ep 13:
Title: Gokigenyou (Good day), Onee-sama
Onee-sama and I went to a jean store, and she said she wanted to try on the same jeans as me. She wants to try on the same jeans as me!? I'm embarrassed, somehow... And around that same time, Shimako-san also went out on a date with a certain person.

Ok, I have a question:

Does Sei love this girl Shiori?

PLEASE READ MY EXPLANAITON BEFORE DISMISSING IT AS “THE DUMB QUESTION!”

Sei says something like she loved this girl to the point that as long as she had her, she did not need anyone else. But Sei also says that she loved her more than her parents and siblings. Is she (or the author) implying that Sei can only compare her love to Shiori with the one to her family? Therefore, either Shiori is just a very dear friend to Sei, or Sei does not know what love really is? Sei did address Shiori as a very close friend of hers. I was guessing that Sei only thinks Shiori as a friend, but she certainly acts more like Shiori is much more than just a dear friend. I think even Yumi and Yoshino sense that (Yumi comments that Sei still loves that girl and Yoshino agrees.)

The white rose family really is the most confusing one of those.

Yes, I'm really happy about that too! I hope we will get to learn a little more about Sei, Youko, and Eriko next season. This season barely told us anything about Youko and Eriko at all. :(

The impression I got from the little we heard was that Sei did love Shiori. I don't want to put a label on her feelings without knowing more about them, but the impression I got was that Shiori was her world, the most important person to her, etc. Whether she had sexual/romantic desires for Shiroi, however, is anyone's guess at this point (except maybe for people who have read the 3rd novel... anyone who has wanna fill us in? ^^).

The white rose family really is the most confusing one of those.

I agree! :eyespin:

As Sei said herself, Shiori is more dearly to her than her family or friends. I think you will see how Sei felt about Shiori in the next episode so I don't really want to talk a lot about it. Not sure about sexual desire but Sei definitely had a romantic desire for Shiori.

(EDIT : i think i didn't understand your message, i'm really greatfull of anime-source too !! tsss sorry i don't speak english very well)

mmm sorry, but I really don't care about Eriko. This first season really "forget" to talk about her. But Youko i care about her ! i would like to know how she met Sachiko and their story ... her story.

Sei loves Shiori, but certainly, in this time, it's innocent. But this kind of love inevitably ends in the desire of the other person.

yes I think it's probably love. We'll know next week end, maybe.
As always, it's very subtle and the real love doesn't matter much. All that matters is that Sei was sad when they had to leave each other.

She probably cut her hairs at this very special moment. I'm surprised nobody noticed the long haired Sei even though THERE ARE SO MANY SEI FANS OUT THERE ;-)

I agree with this thought. The show is Fantastic! IMO It is the relationship puzzles that draw viewers into the storyline. My Favorite are Yumi and Sachiko. Why are people not questioning Yumi's love for Sachiko? :) Just thought I would ask.

I liked the ESU concept. I don't think we have that subtle kind of feelings in Europe. I personnaly don't have ESU friends. I don't think I ever had. I don't even see how it's supposed to be !

Touko doesn't explain the 'esu' concept ; it was really difficult to find the definition !!! and we don't want to bother her again. She is japanese, and she worked really hard on the interview, choosing english words, feelings, thoughts, references on web ... We are very grateful. She worked more than we do !

thank you again :-)

Touko doesn't explain the 'esu' concept ; it was really difficult to find the definition !!!
Um, I explained the "S" concept here, in this same thread, a little while ago. :eyebrow:
Here's what I wrote, so you don't have to go looking for it:
"In my understanding, "Class S" refers to romantic relationships between schoolgirls that are considered to be based more in emotion even if a physical component exists. They are considered to just be a normal phase that the girls will grow out of, and so are accepted and not really given much attention. The "S" might stand for "sister," "sex," "escape," "shoene," or "shoujo." My knowledge of the subject may be out of date, so if anyone has any corrections or additional info that would be great. My primary source for the information is Jennifer Robertson's Takarazuka: Sexual Politics and Popular Culture in Modern Japan. (which by the way is a great book, imo )"
Also I think it's connected to the early-1900s "shoujo shousetsu" by people like Yoshiya Nobuko.

Just a question to US people: in the episodes, we can see after the opening, the sponsor of this series : Geneon Entertainment. don't they have the licence of this series ?
I have never heard of Geneon Entertainment. Maybe someone else knows what it is? Also I don't think the sponsors have rights to a series... don't really know much about their role though. And on an amusing note, another of the sponsors is "burokkori" which can be transliterated into English as "broccoli." Makes you really like your vegetables, huh? ;)

Geneon Entertainment is the new name for Pioneer Japan. Pioneer USA is now Geneon USA. Although most of the Geneon JP produced anime did eventually go to Geneon USA, it's not set in stone until Geneon USA officially announce it. So, as of now, no one licensed marimite.

After reading through Touko's interview, I would like to stress out the Japanese male fan-viewpoint of Marimite.

But for some reason, many OTAKU = anime-loving college boys are hooked on this novel. You know, when I went to Marimite convention, I was surprised that nine-tenths of participants are male. (^^;;

A common misperception is that male otakus do not read shoujo comics. On the contrary, there are quite a large amount who reads shoujo comics/novels. Many of us males loved shoujo comics such as "Fruits Basket," "Tow Shoes," "Gokinjo Monogatari," "Hana yori Dango," etc. On the other hand, the only time we do read them is through word of mouth. Something that becomes very popular in the female reader's world with ultimately spill over to the male otaku-world as well. Hence, you have a big fanbase of male "Fruits Basket" and "Mari-mite" readers.

Otaku had a thirst for something new. So they made this anime in elegant shoujo style. They think otaku have no immunity to this kind of style, and maybe they are right.

To certain extent I agree. But to rather just define it as "no immunity," I perceive it as something like "iyashi-kei." Call it a sense of "aestheticism" if you will. To be blunt about it, in general, most male otakus do not have (or never had any) a female relationship. Male otakus are afraid (and probably have) of being rejected by women as weirdos. Sadly, they resort to anime characters and bishoujo girls as means of escape - which in itself is sad that yes, you can love them without fear of rejection, but the characters will not love you back. For "Marimite," I assume that Japanese male-otakus love this series because the characters are overlapping their fantasies of an "ideal female." Everyone is sweet, caring, and pure. In a sense, male otakus look at the women in reality in disgust versus an pure and "white" artificial female character.

Does that mean that most of the audience for this anime in Japan is anime fan boys?

Don't think so. Many women are discussing about this anime on the net.
What I asuume is female fans of the original novel are not necessarily female otaku while most male fans of it are otaku. But I'm not sure.

To be honest, yes I am certain that most males who love Marimite are otaku.

It's interesting how those who actually go to all girls high school comment on the REALITY of all girls high. We find that Marimite is totally fantasy.(^^; Ah, you reminded of Noriko's statement "koko wa doko? nanijidai?!" (Where am I? What year is this?!) on her first day of school. Being a male, I too acknowledge that this all girl's high is totally fantasy in modern Japan. Having a friend who taught at an all-girl's high stresses that point - "Dude, you do not want to be a teacher at a joshi-kou...your image of a girl will be shatterred to bits!"

General population doesn't know anything about Marimite. Since the anime is aired in the middle of the night, they don't have chance to watch it. Nor do I expect my co-workers to be watching them (maybe they do, I don't know - no one wants to be open about watching an anime when you a "shakaijin").

Why do the japanese DVD carry no subtitles ?
Japanese companies typically spend 300,000,000 yen to produce a 13 episode anime. To recuperate profits, Japanese companies must sell each DVD at around 6000~7000 yen with two episodes each. As the saying goes in corporate Japan: "great quality comes with great price - but spend as little as much money whenever possible to attain a great quality." Putting English subtitles is impractical over here - the DVD is marketed for use in Japan. Why spend an extra 500,000 yen (approx estimate of translation fee for adding English titles in Japan) each episode when almost everyone here in Japan could care less? And let's face it - while 9 out of 10 anime otakus in Japan may be willing to shell out 7000 yen for a DVD, I'm pretty sure only 2-3 out of 10 anime fans outside of Japan will be willing to spend 7000yen plus shipping costs for one DVD. If some company outside of Japan wants to license it, let them buy it from a Japanese company and let them do the translation on their own - translation fees are probably much more cheaper in the States. At least that way, the overseas anime companies can set a cheaper and "reasonable" price of $24-$40 per disc w/more episodes per disc.

Why does it aired at night on japanese TV (this series contain no violence or nudity, I don't understand this schedule) ?

Clarification for the nth time: "Anime companies do not have any choice in choosing an anime time slot." TV studios will offer them a price quote for airtime - but time slots for "golden time" (6PM-9PM) shows are very expensive. Unless they have a huge multinational sponsor, they have no choice but to go for the cheapest one which is late at night or an obscure channel in the UHF band. Besides, I'm certain the TV studios do this on purpose for the following reasons:
A. "Why the heck should I give you airtime for something that is going to last 13-26 episodes? I have tons of other programs that have been showing for three~four years that get 20%+ ratings each viewing and you want me to cancel them! Ha!"
B. "I've never heard of this show/manga/anime. If I don't know it, no one else will - except a few diehard fans. Our TV studio is all about ratings! Why the heck should I give you an airtime that could be more useful to grab ratings with a more famous show?"
C. "Oh you want that time slot, do you? Well drop me a wire transfer of XXXmillion yen by tomorrow and we'll talk about it. Can't afford it? Looks like you have to opt for a late night broadcast then. Hey, look on the bright side! At least you are on a major TV network!!"

pity the tv industry is profit- and rating- oriented. i knew it before, but being reminded of it still depresses me.
as for the part about otakus never getting a date... *sob*

it looks to me that people in marimite are all drawn slightly differently, so you tell them apart even w/out relying on hair style and hair colour (unlike many other animes/mangas, hrmf). does anyone agree? and does anyone agree to this: i think Kubou Shiori bears a resemblence to Shimako (or should i say it the other way round?) of course i'm referring to the way facial features are drawn, since their hairstyles are totally different. this would be done on purpose perhaps? i wonder if the novel mentions anywhere about them looking alike. hmm... need to read ibara no mori, but i'm no where done reading the current volume yet...

kj1980 You know, this is something I've always wondered about. Why does so much anime limit itself to under 26 episodes? One would think a long-running show could develop a much larger fan base and allow people to become more attached to the characters. Also, plot ideas could be explored to a much greater depth.

As it is, I often wonder if the anime studios get "burnt out" trying to come up with completely new stuff all the time. Again and again, for every new show they must start from scratch winning people over and finding an audience. Perhaps it's why so many well-established patterns show up (with obvious examples being cat-girls, maids, harem animes, and so on). I'd think they'd prefer to keep a popular show going rather than keep finding ways to remake it in a slightly different wrapper.

Of course I can see some benefits to a limited run series: it allows shows to have a better formed story "arc" (especially since many are manga adaptations already with a fixed story). Also, a long-running series can become stale or repetitive (though it's often just a failure to allow the story to grow over time). Still, even for just economic reasons alone, I'm surprised such short series are the rule rather than the exception.

NoSanninWa
2004-03-17, 21:40
I generally prefer shorter series because they don't have any filler episodes. When you have only 13 episodes everything has to be tight or else you can't tell the story.

Of course 12-13 episodes isn't enough to tell every story even without filler. Just look at how Shingetsutan Tsukihime was messed up by not having enough episodes to tell the whole story. That show needed 26 episodes to cover its full plot and character development. Last Exile was certainly perfect at 26 episodes without even a single episode of filler.

Each show should be allowed to come in at its own length, but I have never seen a show of greater than 26 episodes that doesn't have filler. The longer the show, the lazier the storytelling tends to be. Keeping MariMite in multiple 13 episode seasons might be the perfect compromise since it ensures a greater focus while allowing the story to continue growing past the end of each story arc.

On average, anime production costs range around 30,000,000 yen per episode (it maybe a bit exaggerated but its somewhere around there). Without a major sponsor (who usually backs "profitable" shows like "ONE PIECE" and "Naruto"), anime companies can only do 13 episodes financially - at most 26 episodes. Which is rather good as it is just about the seasonal showings.

Second - you have tons of anime companies here in Japan that want "a piece of the action." Currently, there are over 60+ anime shows on air in Japan right now. If all of them ran for 26+ episodes, you don't have elbow room to squeeze in more shows. However, if the majority runs for 13 episodes, the circulation of new anime is quicker and supposedly more efficient.

On the other hand, there are too many anime shows. It's great that a lot of anime companies are jumping on the bandwagon to take a bite of the forbidden fruit. Yet, it's also only a matter of time until they realize that the more bits are taken, the quicker they are to reach the rotten core. Simply stating:

A. More anime companies
B. More anime
C. But limited TV stations and broadcast schedules
D. Increased competition for anime companies to surive
E. Lesser episodes, more anime
F. Repeat from A

Do you see the problem here? Increase anime companies, increase anime shows. But there is one control here that is stationary - there is only a limited amount of TV stations (sure there are technically more if you add all the UHF, BS, and CS channels) with only 24 hours each day. And though this may come to a shock for you - but Japan does not show anime on TV stations 24/7! A rough estimate is that only 10-15% of the day is reserved for anime on a particular TV station.

As for "being burnt out" - no. Why? Because writers and scripters get their salary by means of royalties. I don't know about other countries, but for anime writers and scripters they are given two choices: A. Get a standardized salary each month, or B. Forgive the salary and take the royalties in a lump payment several months later. Many opt for B because...hey, would you rather get paid 120,000 yen each month or receive a huge one lump payment of 1,200,000 yen six months later for each time you make an anime?

If you want the money, work your ass off. That is what being an animator is - you kill yourself for a job that you chose to be a part of the industry. And trust me, you do not want to become an animator unless you have the courage and guts to go through hell - because I personally won't survive a week, nor would I want to imagine starting as a genga artist making a meagerly 50,000 yen per month on an enslavement of limited time constraints. 50,000 yen!! I can't even pay rent with that!

I'd agree that often happens. However, to me "filler episodes" are almost an artifact of the predestined plot of a limited run show. For example, when was the last time you heard someone complain of filler in a long-running U.S. show like MASH, Sinefield or Friends? Sure they may eventually "jump the shark" and not be entertaining anymore, but that's something else altogether. Being episodic isn't, in and of itself, bad.

Granted, I think story arcs are one of the things Western viewers generally like about anime - it's something often missing from the shows we're used to. However, balance is a good too, and sometimes I think an overreaching plot can bog a anime comedy or "slice-of-life" drama down. These shows are often at their best when they just drop their characters into different situations and let them react (think Azumanga Daioh)

I guess that's why I wondered, when a show does become a "hit", why are they still willing to end it so soon? A second season of a show already proven popular wouldn't have such a hard time attracting sponsorship I'd think.

Interesting! I think in the U.S. for example, a writer or actor may get royalties if it's in their contract, but it would be per-show. They'd wind up making as much for 200 shows of the same series as they would from say, 25 shows each from 8 different series. In fact, since royalties are paid each time an episode is re-run or purchased, they'd likely do better with a long running popular series than several different short series, some of which may not be as successful as others.

She is one of the new first-year students who appear when Yumi, Shimako, and Yoshino are second-year students. I believe she is one of the girls who wants to become Yumi's petite soeur, and she has a funny-looking hairstyle--she has two spiral-shaped ponytails that some people think look like drills.

Honestly, this episode felt a bit too rushed (much like the others, i.e. "Rosa Canina"). Or maybe I just feel this way because I read the novel. Or, probably because it made no sense whatsoever to put this story after the Valentine's Day story.

I was wondering who would be doing Sei's grand souer - and hey! it was Takayama Minami!

Well, I guess we are going back to the Valentine's dating event from next week. Blue jeans and fast-food hamburger with Sachiko-sama.

Episode 11 Spoilers:Episode 11 Summary

This episode we see a very different Sei... angst Sei! and lots of her inner thoughts.

We start off with Sei angsting and wanting to isolate herself with others in order to avoid getting hurt. She recounts the painful parting she experienced last winter when she was 16.

Sei met Shiori on a spring morning. Sei was sick of everything around her and felt like she didn't fit in and just wanted to disappear from that world. She describes herself as a "dry/moisture-less" being and the moment she saw Shiori, Shiori looked as if she was flowing with moisture. Very love-at-first-sight moment.

Then we skip over to 2nd yr Youko without her all-knowing-Gendo-aura. Sei asks about Shiori and acts rather coldly towards Youko, who seems to be very concerned about her. Then we see Sei's Onee-sama, the previous Rosa Gigantea. She has Sachiko tagging just behind her and describes Sachiko as being pretty like a "Japanese doll". (seems like Gigantea savisu on the Chinensis en bouton's petite soeur is a tradition or something ^.^;;)

We learn a little about Sei's relationship with her Onee-sama. The previous Rosa Gigantea has chosen Sei purely for her looks (literally, for her face). (Sei is described as having Western features in the novels) And Sei accepted Rosa Gigantea's rosary because she liked this simple reason as well.

Then we see Shiori in the chapel and Sei comes in looking quite desperate, saying how much she wanted to see her. Luckily, Shiori returns the sentiment.

Sei and Shiori starts spending a lotta time together. But then, after class, Youko butts in, telling Sei that it'd be better for Sei to put a little more distance between herself and Shiori. Youko also suggests Sei to take Shiori as her petite soeur and make things official. Sei ignores her warning and continues to obsess over Shiori. We get to see Sei sling her arm around Shiori as they walk and a little hug fest in a forest. Sei talks about how much she wants to be with Shiori.

We learn a little more about Shiori as it turns out that she lost both her parents in an accident which is why she's living at the school's dorm. This summer, she stayed at a convent in Tokyo instead of going to her uncle's.

BOOM BOOM. Thunder, lighting, and it's raining. Shiori and Sei run into the greenhouse for cover. Some nice Sei/Shiori moments as Shiori wipes Sei's hair for her, then lays her head on Sei's shoulder. As Shiori rests, Sei braids their hair together. Some hand holding (reminded me of that Haruka/Michiru moment in SMSuper) Sei thinks how much she wants time to stop right now, how Shiori is the only thing that matters and how she wants to merge with Shiori and just disappear.

Sei is spending even more time with Shiori and is rarely at the Rose Mansion anymore. Then we see some Rosa Gigantea and Sei interaction. (We get to see Eriko (Rosa Foetida) for 0.00001 sec. No line btw. kekekeke) Sei was asked to stay behind. Sei suggests to her Onee-sama that she pick another petite soeur, but Rosa Gigantea rejects that idea and asks Sei to remember her promise to stay by her side until graduation. Rosa Gigantea fondles Sei's hair and tells her that she doesn't mind that Sei doesn't have a petite soeur as long as she doesn't follow a path that she'll regret.

Another Youko moment. Sei was in a hurry because she was planning to meet someone else (probably Shiori) but was stopped by Youko. Youko tells Sei not to get too involved with Shiori. Sei reacts quite defensively until Youko breaks the news that Shiori is planning to become a nun after graduation. Sei is very upset and runs off to find Shiori.

Sei confronts Shiori. They both confess about loving each other (literally they just say "suki" but I think it's okay to interpret it as "love" in this case, after seeing the related situation and the way they say it to each other). Shiori even said it's the first time that she had ever loved someone this much. Sei is still quite upset and accuses Shiori of choosing God over her and abandoning her. Shiori denies this and tells Sei that it's her wish to become a nun. Some more pushing around and Sei finally grabs Shiori and was about to kiss her when Shiori broke away. "Maria-sama ga miteru dakara" (Maria-sama is watching) Shiori explains. Sei walks away, heart broken, thinking that she has lost to Maria-sama.

Sei starts to act strangely and is called before the Head of the Academy and other ppl about her and Shiori. Sei responds calmly and just says that they have nothing to do with each other anymore and that it was all her fault. The nun says that Shiori said the same thing.

After that, Shiori had informed the school that she would be away from the dorm and Sei can't find her. Youko shows up as Sei Juri-angst-walks through the school, Youko tells Sei about the Yamayurikai Christmas party to which Sei responds rather coldly. But still, Youko sees her off and says that they'll be waiting for her.

Finally, Sei kinda loses it and really wants to see Shiori. She finds her at the door of the chapel where they first met. Shiori literally launches herself into Sei's arms and tells Sei how she can't stop thinking about her. Then.... KISS!! (although the stupid camera panned down at the critical moment. damn cheapskates. >.<) Anyways, they decide to run away and were going to meet at the train station.

However, Shiori didn't show up. Sei had waited for 3 hours and even though she knew Shiori wasn't coming, she still waited. Then Rosa Gigantea showed up and showed Sei a note that Shiori wrote. It turns out that Shiori did show up but seeing Sei from afar, she hesistated and decided not to run away. Sei was really upset and Rosa Gigantea comforted her and told Sei that she was there for her. Rosa Gigantea revealed that she didn't choose Sei just for her looks and it was just a white lie in order to get Sei to be her soeur. But Sei broke down again, saying how Rosa Gigantea was going to graduate soon, and Rosa Gigantea said that she wasn't the only one who was worried about Sei. Just then, Youko pops up. She gives Sei a cookie (one that Rei made for the Christmas party). Rosa Gigantea tells Sei that she already told Sei's mother that she would be staying over at Rosa Gigantea's house, and that the 3 of them should stay up late and party because it was the day before winter vacation.

Then, as they're walking down the streets of Tokyo, Rosa Gigantea's watch beeps and they notice that it is the next day. Then Rosa Gigantea and Youko both shout "Happy Birthday." It's Sei's birthday!! So Christmas Eve is over and Sei bids Shiori goodbye as she cuts her hair (as cutting one's hair is a typical post-breakup thing).

We come back to present tense and Yumi is carrying some party stuff over to the Rose Mansion and sees Sei. Suga Sei/Kasuga Seiko (author of "The Forest of Thorns") shows up and apparently she's meeting the Head of the Academy. We find out that Kaori-san (girl who died in "The Forest of Thorns") is the Head of the Academy and didn't die (such a sweet moment! *_*).

Sei does a little jump/hug on Yumi and tells her that it's her birthday tomorrow. Then she says in funny Engrish, "My Happy Birthday!"

PREVIEW: IT'S THE LONG AWAITED DATES!!!! And Rosa Canina is going to make an appearance.Shimako looks a little worried while Rosa Canina has the "MWAHAHAHA-girl-do-I-have-plans-for-you-look". Also, quite amusingly, Sachiko says she wonders if she will be able to survive a date with Yumi... ;)
That's it for ep 11. Hope pkgirl163 and me covered everything in there.

question about ep 11 and the novel:
does the novel explain why Shiori decided not to runaway with Sei?

Honestly, this episode felt a bit too rushed (much like the others, i.e. "Rosa Canina"). Or maybe I just feel this way because I read the novel. Or, probably because it made no sense whatsoever to put this story after the Valentine's Day story.

Yeah, it's definitely too rushed. It didn't actually bring out why Sei fell in love with Shiori and how. And I didn't feel enough of Sei's angst in ep.11.....ah well...

not yet :D
now, she does looks like being jealous all over Shiori in a way, or maybe it's just me
somehow, it's amazing that Sei is like getting all the girls in the show like in one of those stupid 4koma story ;D

and that Rei has been worked as Yamayurikai's chef since her first year is one of the smiling scene also ^^

OT: Kourin-san's quote looks a bit troubled, using the vBulletin template and Opera 7

I was wondering who would be doing Sei's grand souer - and hey! it was Takayama Minami!

Well, I guess we are going back to the Valentine's dating event from next week. Blue jeans and fast-food hamburger with Sachiko-sama.

you are right, their love story is short (in only one episode), so we don't have time to appreciate Shiori. those which did not read the novel (I think), cannot like her! we can only hate her (according to episode information).

On the other hand, this episode is interesting since it tells the past of Sei. I liked her elder sister much. But Shiori .... :argue:

Ok, I downloaded ep. 1 of the [Anime-Keep] group and the video quality is better. Less distortion due to the compression. Sharp image and subs are quite good. I don't really know anything about video quality, all of it pretty much looks the
same to me. ^^

They typesetting looked fine. Timing was also fine except for a few places where the subs didn't match what was being said (i.e., they appeared on the screen too late or too early), although that may have been done so that the viewers would be able to read everything more easily--I am a fast reader so I don't know. ^^

I cannot publicly comment on the translation in A-Keep's release at this time.

One thing I will say regarding Marimite anime translation is that there are mistranslations (or, to be more generous, very liberal translations, or translations that interpret certain lines in ways that are different from the way I would currently interpret them based on knowledge I have gained about the novels, manga, and anime over the past few months) in the first episode of all 3 groups' releases, which is certainly understandable-- no one is perfect.

Don't worry about Panda, Göönk, she just likes to be sarcastic. I think everyone here is looking forward to seeing episodes 12 and 13, can't wait until they air and we can see Yumi and Sachiko's date!

By the way, did anyone else notice that Yumi has an interesting hairstyle in the preview for episode 12? Maybe she did her hair in a new style especially for the date with Sachiko! :D

Of course, they won't release the whole series before it's aired in Japan. LOL.

Don't worry, Göönk, I don't think you started a war!
However, you may want to keep in mind that it is not easy to find the best quality encodes of an episode immediately after it airs. For a fansub to be released soon after it has aired, the raw that will be used for the fansub must be found immediately so that timing can be done, and that raw may not end up being the best one done for that episode. Of course DVD quality is even better, but I don't think the first Marimite DVD is even out yet (please correct me if I'm wrong about that!). I think I am getting a little OT here... sorry about that.

Nothing serious at all, don't get me wrong. When I refer to the typesetting, I mean the onscreen logo/signs etc. The opening logo is very nice... but there was a missing sign/translation for the eye catch in the middle of the episode and the preivew for the next episode in my opinion was a bit too plain, but thats just me =p I do like the font color and selection that you have.. and you definatly upped us on the Karaoke in EP 1, since we didnt include it in the actual encode (due to the translator having a problem making out the words, which was later resolved.. but didnt warrant a v2 in our opinion) It's good to see you guys are finally back from the "groggyness" as of late. I hope to see your group release on a steady schedule, but I understand that people have lives... well more like evil college XD

Anyway. This episode 11 had too MUCH TO READ. WAY TOO MUCH. That's a series that make translators work a lot for sure. Good work guys.

My rude impressions (sorry about it) : I didn't find it sad at all but rather happy and funny. I am loosing the timeline by the way. What's up with Christmas after Valentine day? Why talking about Sei when Yumi is the main character. Hum. That's weird I really don't care about Sei, even if she is a very moving character and maybe she deserve a whole series, but what about Yumi?? Is she so empty that the series has to skip her? And I suppose now they're going back to Valentine date? And what about Sachiko's cousin? There is no story in that series. Only a following of episodes that are barely linked to each others. No timeline, no history. That's the first time I'm getting bored with Maria Sama Ga Miteru and I hope ep12 will be more interesting. Looking forward to seeing it. back to the roots ! Sachiko and yumi for sure!!

i have no idea how goonk found that ep funnie did you see something that i missed? It's like bad actor doing sad scenes. I just didn't believe it. I believe it was rushed. Someone pointed that out before about ep. 11 a few days ago (after watching the raw I guess). So, it's rushed and there was no time to waste for the feelings and they are missing. That's just my opinion. I didn't really find it funny {exageration}, but not as moving as other episodes.

And I don't believe that "loosing the loving one" at 16 is so sad after all, that happened to me so, now, I know it's just a few sad days then you forget. Sorry if I sound so heartless but that's it ;) and I hope you understand my position if you don't share it.

If, as everyone says, the relationship between Sei and Shiori in the novels is what was referred to as a "Class S" relationship (more than friends, but not quite lovers; very deep admiration; or the like), I think that just got tossed out the window in episode 11 for unabashed shoujo-ai. Unless its not unusual for the two principles of the "Class S" relationship to sneak into the woods to make out.

I wouldn't say that this episode was entirely depressing. Sure it had its heartrending moments. Ok, it had a lot of heartrending moments, but it did wrap things up on an up note. Sei was ready to give up on caring for others like she did for Shiori, but the current Rosa Gigantea helped her heal those wounds. And, apparently sitting nude, in a giant thorn bush, and getting a samurai barber to cut your hair helps in the healing process as well.

PS. I agree with aniforever's sentiment, Anime-Source and Lililicious are doing a great job getting Mari-mite out for all of us to enjoy.
PPS. Here's a little list I found for Sei, or anyone who's been in Sei's position before. 10 Lost Love Quotes (http://quotations.about.com/cs/lovequotes/tp/10_lost_love.htm), enjoy.

Actually from what I know about "Class S," a physical component is possible. What makes it class S is that it happens when they are "shoujo" (in a period of girlhood (is that even a word :heh: ) ... I'm not sure exactly what ages it applies to but from what I have read it is considered a significant categorization).

I wouldn't say that this episode was entirely depressing. Sure it had its heartrending moments. Ok, it had a lot of heartrending moments, but it did wrap things up on an up note. I know the episode has been released, but I think there are still people who haven't seen it. Maybe we should use spoiler tags for a few more days, just to be sure. I don't want anyone to feel they have to avoid this forum so that they don't get spoiled!
I LOVED that part at the very end with Suga Sei. Now I want to know more about how things turned out between her and Kaori!
Also cutting one's hair after a breakup, or another similar event, is a common practice in anime (and in Japan in general I believe, but I'm not positive about it; I think I remember hearing once that girls will sometimes tease girls who get their hair cut, jokingly asking if they broke up with someone ;)). It's amusing that she does it perfectly with those giant scissors though... added a bit of humor to an otherwise sad moment.

If that is the case, then I stand corrected.
(in a period of girlhood (is that even a word :heh: )
Why, indeed it is a word; Girlhood - n. State or time of being a girl.
I know the episode has been released, but I think there are still people who haven't seen it. Maybe we should use spoiler tags for a few more days, just to be sure. I don't want anyone to feel they have to avoid this forum so that they don't get spoiled!

Episode 11 was rather boring, they didn't have to make a whole episode out of the Sei/Shiori story. After watching the next episode preview, I wonder who's this:

but it's just an idea ;-)

no i don't think it but it would be really funny ! She is with Rosa Canina, ne ?

Tsukiyama Minako in disguise?

Tsukiyama Minako in disguise?

Are you serious!!!??? Those school newspapers people really should learn to draw the line somewhere. I don’t think it’s Yoshino because that girl looks nothing like Yoshino. That’s just what I think.
Besides, there are three pairs out on a date. Why are they only interested in Rosa Chinensis en bouton and Rosa Chinensis en bouton petit soeur? I thought Rei would be the most popular in this case. It seems like nobody in school cares about Shimako/ Rosa Canina’s date. I think even Shimako doesn’t care about it; she wears school uniform on that date (from the preview).

That is why I figured since the novel mentioned Minako was in disguise when Yoshino accidentally bumped into her and how Tsutako-san was impressed at what lengths Minako-sama would go to for a scoop.

Actually it is "After the first date [came]..." The "hatsu deeto" means "first date" (this is Sachiko and Yumi's first date after all! :D), not "beginning of the date."

I started to learn Japanese little time ago (two weeks lol), so for now it's difficult. In fact, the coma let me think it's two distinct sentences... thus I interpreted instead of translating correctly, sorry

How in the world do you people manage to find those Japanese magazines/products etc? I can’t even find magazines like NewType or Animage. The only local store I know that carries those two magazines are always behind. They only have January issue of animage and Feb. issue of NewType Japan. For those online stores, you have to pay for one-year subscription for the magazines. Care to share your information on where to find Maria-sama ga Miteru related products?

I don’t know the answer of that. I only know that someone said NewType USA is behind always. I am sure people here can answer your question.

Besides, has anyone read the April issue of NewType USA yet?
It says that Rosa Chinensis = Chinese Rose and Rosa Foetida = Persiana Rose. Is that true? I always thought that’s the color of roses. I cannot read either French or Japanese. I just thought it would be fun to know this.

Roses are one of the flora that have many species. Rosa chinensis, rosa foetida, and rosa gigantea are Latin names for rosary species.

R. chinensis: http://www5d.biglobe.ne.jp/~ros/ros/r_qz/r_chinensis.htm
R. foetida: http://www5d.biglobe.ne.jp/~ros/ros/r_qz/r_foetida.htm
R. gigantea: http://www5d.biglobe.ne.jp/~ros/ros/r_qz/r_gigantea.htm

These are just the species names and does not necessarily mean all red, yellow, and white roses.

Ok, after ep.11, I think it’s obvious that they are not going to put in more detail about Sei’s second year. Can someone here spoil some detail between Sei and Rosa Canina (Shizuka), if there is any, or a little more detail as what happened (Shiori etc.)? I find it very peculiar that Rosa Canina is the only one who is not in Yumayurikai but constantly pop up in the series more than any other minor characters. I also would like to know more detail about what happened between Sei, Shiori and anyone else that knew or were involved in this event. Since I cannot read the novels, maybe someone here can share some info. if they don’t mind.

I know I might be rather late in mentioning this but I was wondering...
In ep. 11, was I the only person who felt a Casablanca vibe watching Sei standing alone on the train platform? She even had the long overcoat and a note from Ilsa... err, Shiori saying that they couldn't see each other anymore. All Sei needed was a fedora and it would have been perfect (that, and some Nazis, but that probably would have been too obvious).

Shiori, we'll always have Paris... err, Lillian. :)

As promised, here's my summary of ep 12:

Yumi still isn't sure what to do on her date with Sachiko. She thinks to herself that she will ask Sachiko about it, but when she gets the opportunity, she ends up giving Sachiko a meeting time and place instead (11 am at some station).
Yumi tries asking Yoshino for advice, but Yoshino is busy making a list of people who gave Rei chocolate for Valentine's Day, as Rei has to reciprocate on White Day. Yoshino is jealous of Yumi because Sachiko only accepted chocolates from Yumi. Yumi tries to bring up the subject of her date, but that reminds Yoshino about Rei's upcoming date. Yoshino tries to pretend she isn't worried about it, but of course she is.
So Yumi decides to ask Shimako for advice, despite feeling a little guilty because Shimako has her own problem to deal with (her date is with Rosa Canina, Kanina Shizuka, who is kinda like a rival for her because she tried to run against her in the election to be next year's Rosa Gigantea, and because she likes Sei). But during their conversation, she realizes Shimako isn't in a good mood to ask for advice.
Yumi runs into Tsutako, who tells her that she has been asked by Minako (head of the Newspaper Club) to take photos of the 3 couples on their dates for use in the newspaper.
On the morning of the date, Yuuki (Yumi's brother) teases her a little, asking if she is nervous and joking that Sachiko might dump her (as a soeur).
As Yumi is waiting for Sachiko, she runs into Tsutako. Tsutako guessed that the 3 couples would be going there for their dates because it is convenient to get to and has cheap, fun activities. As they are speaking, Tsutako notices that Rei has appeared there, and Tanuma Chisato as well. She runs off to follow them.
Yumi wonders to herself if she is dressed down in just jeans. Just then, Sachiko shows up, looking pretty dressed up (high heels, skirt, nice shirt, scarf). Yumi realizes she was right... :heh:
Sachiko gives Yumi her half of the 3000 yen date cost (the cost for the White Rose date is being paid by the Newspaper Club in return for Shizuka writing a report on the date, but I'm not sure about the Yellow Rose date...).
As they are walking, Sachiko stops to buy a dictionary. Yumi suggests that they wait until they are about to leave to buy it, because otherwise they'll have to carry it around. Sachiko seems to think Yumi was really smart to think of that, and Yumi thinks to herself that Sachiko must either get stuff delivered to her house or have someone to carry her bags for her when she goes shopping. A real ojou-sama... :heh:
Yoshino spots Sachiko and Yumi. She came because she was worried about Rei's date. She runs into Minako, who has unsuccessfully tried to disguise herself. Yoshino lies to Minako and tells her that she is meeting Yumi.
Yumi and Sachiko go window shopping in a mall. Sachiko does pretty well, but comments afterward that she was bothered by salespeople trying to recommend products to her.
Rei and Chisato go to a movie. Tsutako spots them and decides to go get lunch while she has the chance. As she is waiting in line, she sees Shimako and Shizuka walking separately.
Minako runs into Tsutako, and the two of them discuss the situation. Tsutako comes up with a plan: they will have lunch, then wait outside the movie theater in hopes of catching Rei and Chisato on their way out.
Shimako and Shizuka are going back to the Rose Mansion for their date. They have a kind of odd conversation...
Yoshino spots Rei and Chisato, just as Chisato reaches out and puts her arm in Rei's... looks like bad news for Rei when the date is over, Yoshino is scary when she's angry... :heh:
Yumi takes Sachiko to a fast food restaurant for lunch. Sachiko orders correctly, but then when the employee puts the food out on the tray before her, she walks off without taking it! (so funny! :D) Then when she goes to eat the hamburger, she starts looking around on her tray for a fork and knife... (also very funny ^^) Yumi informs her that hamburgers are usually eaten with one's hands, but offers to go get her cutlery. Sachiko says no and proceeds to pull off a tiny bit of the hamburger and eat it. :heh:
They leave the restaurant, and Sachiko asks Yumi where they will be going next. Yumi is in trouble, because she hasn't come up with anything yet... Just then, Sachiko disappears!

That is a recurring scene that is used many times in Japanese romance dramas and novels - somewhat dating just right after the Meiji Restoration when the first railroads were built.

The date cost of 3000 yen is provided by the Press Club provided that the two winners, Shizuka-sama and Chisato write a summary of their dates. With 3000 yen, you are limited to where you can go on a date. Just as Tsutako-san said, "On a limited budget of 3000 yen and within the compounds of our rail passes, this place is the perfect location for dating."

lol I don't speak japanese as I speak french !
so I really didn't understand this part of episode.

could you help me with that :
if you speak japanese could you tell me what does the following sentence mean (the sentence is symmetrical) ?
--> 作品に対してもファンのみんなに対しても。
--> sakuhin ni tai shite mo fuan no minna ni tai shite mo.
fuan = fan I suppose.
it's Oyuki Konno who speaks about the animation work (her responsabilities and then she says that)

in this sentence, I think fans and production are in opposition and for Oyuki it's difficult to satisfy fan and production. but i'm not really sure ! really really ! can you confirm it or tell me what does it mean?
and why she tells fuan no minna and not only fuan ?

sorry to bother you. if you don't want to, it doesn't matter, i will find it later

The sentence is incomplete. If it were to be translated into English, it would read something like, "To the production and to all the fans." While the kanji that reads "tai" does mean "opposition" in normal use, the way that the sentence reads is more along the lines of "obligation to."

"Fan" is singular
"Fan no minna" is all the fans - group plural

Oh, by the way, next week Konno Oyuki and Hibiki Reine would be doing a special autograph session....in Hokkaido. _| ̄|○ - why isn't in Tokyo?!

Oh, by the way, next week Konno Oyuki and Hibiki Reine would be doing a special autograph session....in Hokkaido.please, i beg you, forgive my stupidity and lake of anime culture, but who are they? I looked at the character page of the anime and didn't find those names, neither are they people giving their voices to the characters.

As you might have known, I have created the a Marimite FAQ in the forum with a small ambition to make it as a good FAQ reference for new audience once Marimite is becoming popular outside Japan. Rather than making it by my own creation, I prefer to make the FAQ as the work of the regular members here. Therefore, please send me your proposed questions or articles to be included in the FAQ.
Be careful not to give a lot of spoilers to the new audiences by choosing the words carefully.

"Marimite" is usually shown on Wednesdays on TV Tokyo at 25:00-25:30. This week's episode, which will be the last of this season, will be aired on Wednesday 24:00-24:30.

So that means it takes about three days to translate them, hmm...that's quick.

That conversation between Shimako and Shizuka is just strange. I still don’t understand what Shizuka means. But it shows that Shimako is really smart (and direct, in this case)! She re-phrases the question and throws it right back to Shizuka. Yet, Shizuka is talking in riddles. If Shizuka were dating Yumi, she might have completely lost. This is different side of Shimako, aggressive and direct. I like that. :D I just never saw Shimako like this when she is around Sei. I hope next ep. is going to reveal what Shizuka’s intention is. Otherwise, I will have to wait until next season. :(

Yumi worries too much. Besides, even if Sachiko doesn’t like the date with Yumi, she is too polite to just disappear.

wat's rainy blue? :help:

"Rainy Blue" is the tenth volume of the "Maria-sama ga Miteru" novel, released in March 2002. It is composed of three chapters: "Rozario no Shizuku" "Kibara Chuui-hou" and "Rainy Blue"

"Rozario no Shizuku" - Shimako chooses her petit sœur and gives her cross to Nijou Noriko

"Kibara Chuuihou" - another "warning" event involving Rei and Yoshino, where Yoshino decides to join the kendo team as promised - but Rei going against it

"Rainy Blue" - Sachiko keeps on cancelling a date with Yumi every week...and Yumi is afraid [and gets angry] that Sachiko might be choosing Matsudaira Touko over her. At the end, Yumi cries in Sei's arms (she is now a student at the university) and Sachiko leaves Yumi standing in the rain

"Rainy Blue," and its next volume, "Parasol o Sashite" are novels that goes together. These two volumes are by far, one of the favorite stories of Marimite fans as you see the development of Yumi becoming independent and budding as a Rosa Chinensis en bouton.

They didn't become really close until the Rainy Blue-Parasol o Sashite arc. Sachiko is the kind that won't express her feeling outwardly and they were kinda second guessing each other's feeling before that arc. You see a lot of that in Rainy Blue, probably the most heart-wrenching story in the series. It's also my favorite arc and I would say Yumi really changed a lot since then. :)

The end of Rainy Blue is really a killer. I wonder if I would have gone crazy if I didn't have Parasol o Sashite to read right away....

Yumi worries too much. Besides, even if Sachiko doesn’t like the date with Yumi, she is too polite to just disappear.

Yumi does not have enough confidence in herself. She always doubted herself being not good enought as Sachiko's petite soeur. That's why she always worries too much. Remember when Yuuki said to her before the date that Sachiko may break up with her if she's not careful, or when Sachiko joked to her after the treasure hunting that she wants to return the rosary back? Yumi's extremely sensitive about that and easily gets upset by it because she still has some doubts in herself....

Sounds like a happy ending. :) By “happy ending,” I mean maybe Shimako gets to know Shizuka better and learn not to dislike her. I don’t mean that Shimako hates Shizuka but she is not exactly on Shimako’s list of “top 100 favorite people in the world.” Maybe Shizuka learns about….whatever she wants to know about Shimako or anything else, hence resolves the “misunderstanding” between them. I don’t know. Anyway, it is just nice to see that everyone thinks the best of others.

Yeah, Yumi is still trying to find her place in Sachiko’s heart (friends/soeurs/whatever). She idolizes Sachiko, doesn’t she? I hope that Yumi will learn the real Sachiko soon and just be herself so that this relationship will be built on trust and understanding. Otherwise, it is going to fall apart between Sachiko and Yumi.

i thought the date with Yumi and Sachiko will be more intense... argg in english i can't write my fellings !!! grrrr

I like this first half of dating story among all the Rosa en bouton and whoever they go out with. The story is subtle, tender in a way, and really shows some relationships and how they see each other in depth. For me, it IS intense underneath those gentle smiles or interactions. That’s what tells the story.

Continuing the off-topicness :) I asked the same question in the One Piece forum and currently it would appear people prefer to have discussion limited to one large thread. But there are various reasons why people should prefer one or the other, maybe I should post a poll in this forum to ask the same question.

But since ep 12 (of 13) is about to be released, it may be a bit late to worry about it now (but it might help in 6 months time when the possible second season is released).

On Topic.

I watched episode 12 last night. I think it was the best one yet :D

Though I'm still a bit confused about the airing of the episodes but it's my understanding the episodes 10 and 11 should really be viewed after episode 5 and before episode 6.

I agree. Just like the case with KgNE, a separate thread for each episode can ensure people won't read the spoilers by accident and perhaps garner more discussion.

That is correct. The stories are not actually related and if you don't mind the messed up timeline, it doesn't really matter which ones you watch first. Maybe they will change the order of the episode with the DVD release to reflect the correct timeline.

it seems that side topics are getting much success.
I prefer this one and only thread and I follow what all of you say. So I don't press "spoiler" and every thing is just fine.

If people want to read a topic before watching the anime, I don't think they're going to read page 35 of a thread anyway. They're going to go to page 1 and read. If people go to page 35, they'll face spoilers. Even saying Yumi is Sachiko's soeur is a spoiler for some one who didn't watch ep. 2. So long live single topic !

New watcher shall create new topics. I like this idea of a topic/ep. Go ahead.

It's true that for the most part the episode viewing order doesn't matter greatly. However I think certain storylines such as the Rosa Canina arc (Ep 6) benefits considerably from watching it in the proper order, ie after the Ibara no Mori arc (Ep 10-11), because you know a lot more about Sei's motivations behind how she treats Shizuka & Shimako.

In my opinion it's an excellent series. It has some good story lines, characters with some depth and I really like the music as well. Not everyone likes classical and even though I'm a rock and roller at heart I like the music it really fits with the story. This is definitely my favorite anime so far in 2004. :)

I don't think this is a question the viewers (i.e. the people on this forum) can really answer for you. You really need to watch at least a couple of episodes and decide for yourself. Considering you didn't stop in the middle of the episode and delete the file, then there is still a chance that you will like this style of anime but I don't rate the chances of that happening very high (well under 50%).

Considering people visit and post in this forum because they are fans of the show, then it would be only natural to get a very biased opinion (as you would if you posted such a question in any of the series specific forums). As for the question of it's quality, well if I knew how to define what "quality" meant in this context then I might be able to say, but again it's a personal opinion.

If you want an answer to the question "Is it worth your time to watch the show", I would have to say no, the chances are against that (given that you haven't really given much of a clue as to what you like or dislike). But read some of the threads you can find here and see if you find the content (the discussion about the show) interesting. I would even suggest you read pkgirl163's summary (http://forums.animesuki.com/showpost.php?p=150209&postcount=14) of episode 13. I know it contains huge spoilers but given that you haven't even watched ep 1, then you shouldn't understand much of the story (and hopefully by the time you get to watch the episode you'll have forgotten much of detail and still be able to enjoy the last episode of the first series). If you find the summary interesting then at least there is a chance you will find the episodes leading up to it worth while, that may give you a clue if you should spend time watching this series.

But this is one of those type of series that does generate a lot of discussion, (even if the fan-base is a lot, lot smaller than other 'popular' shows), hence the existence of this forum.

I agree...baka, you should watch it yourself because 1. the people here are all fans and all have good reasons to be, and 2. you just never know sometimes your taste strays far from that of the majority...I've become a major fan of shows that many people disliked, and hated some that were really popular (well not really, but it happens).

Sei's swimsuit (http://diary2.cgiboy.com/0/fomalhaut/index.cgi?d=17&y=2003&m=4)
Eriko's swimsuit (http://diary2.cgiboy.com/0/fomalhaut/index.cgi?d=18&y=2003&m=4)
Kanina's swimsuit (http://diary2.cgiboy.com/0/fomalhaut/index.cgi?d=20&y=2003&m=4)I dont like those last fanarts. It's pure vulgarity. It doesn't fit Maria Sama's spirit even of the guy knows how to draw. Would be fine with other series and I would like them a lot, but not with Maria Sama.

I understand. Others fanart (not all but several of them) are really hot and don't fit maria-sama. I don't like them. but the posted pics here are beautifull, for me.

it's difficult to find really good picture of Sachiko-sama. All the pics I found don't look like her :-( She has an expression that I don't find in fanart. Maybe i'm the only one who think that... :-( but no fan succeeded in drawing her as pretty as she is in the series :-( if you have good pic of her, I really want to see, but only if she has this expression (cold half tender half). lol

yeah, I don't imagine Sachiko in string at all.
She's a Lady.

There are series like Green Green for that

Agree wholeheartedly. If there's one thing that plagues anime these days, it's gratuitous fanservice. In that sense, I find Marimite an extremely refreshing series.

I've been watching the latest "Midori no hibi" and "Kono Minikuku mo Utsukushii Sekai" and there are naked girls every ten seconds. Man, it's not even funny.

Still I'm downloading them. WHY ? ;)
Lolita addicted I guess.

i agree. there are way too much fanservice nowadays that it's not even fun anymore. i mean one or two is ok but do people really need to see panty shots every other scene or people naked everywhere. i just watched ep 1 of midori no hibi and dang the girl's complete top was bare. eesh. iono that's also one of the reason i love marimite.

for why i like the fan art for marimite well i think it's beautiful. i mean she can be wearning overalls for all i care it's just that the art was really good. i agree that it's hard to imagine the girls of marimite dressing in swimsuits or anything revealing but it's fan art afterall. all i can say is that the arts are very good though some pics are just way too revealing for my taste.

I need a help for the Novel section of "Maria sama ga miteru FAQ"
As you can see, in the synopsis section, many chapters are poorly written. This is because I don't have a sufficient time to write them all and a writer talent to present the story in a good style.

If you are good in english and writing stories is your cup of tea, please consider to contribute to the FAQ. Even though, you haven't read the novels, you can still write the synopsis because the anime version follows the novel very closely. The synopsis should be less than 250 words per chapter. Do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions/suggestions.

wahouuuu !!! no no no no no no no no no no i won't read it !!!!! i'm resisting too !! lol

I recieved the OST from cdJapan .... the postal card is a pic of all girls (but only the back !!!! ) and the clear card is the same pic ! i'm really disappointed !

Hmmmm...this is funny. I ordered both CD's as well (but from Amazon Japan).

One card was the girl walking off in a line (like I think you are describing), but the other CD has a different card, The one of Yumi and Sachiko (that lillilicious shows on their site).

So now I'm wondering, how many DIFFERENT cards are there? -_- I hate when they have many cards and you only get a surprize one leaving ones collection incomplete. *sniffle*

I wonder if epi. 5 of Bakuretsu Tenshi is a parody of Maria Sama. The story takes place in a all woman school where girls call themself "onê sama". They're all naive, etc... maybe it's just coincidence. What is your opinion?

sorry, my english is bad.
in the two CD there is one clear card. and the clear card is the same in the two CD. (this clear card is the same as we see in the index of the official site)
The postal card with the second OST is not beautifull.... :-(

but in June, the trading cards will be on sale.
to have all of them you must collect 137 different cards :
- 117 normal cards
- 009 special cards
- 009 rare cards
- 002 promo cards

i will collect them and make scans for my website :-)

Oh, I see. I was confused because I didn't get a postal card. :( I guess I didn't get first press. :( Oh! But did you keep your obi-strips? (those little paper on the outside of the CD's) They both had a surprize underneath!!

The single has a Yumi paperdoll, and Sachiko for the album. ^_^

Also, I have gotten both Drama CD's, the first one had Yumi+Sachiko plastic dolls, and the second one had, Shimako+Yoshino (surprized they didnt pair Yoshino+Rei for the 3rd DRama o.O)

Yes, I have a pre-order for the trading cards too!! ^__^ Only 2 boxes though (can't afford more than that. -__-) I have ordered late from Yesasia, so I may not even get any. :( Also the release date is pushed back to July. :(

a bit ago I went on a search for a Maria-sama wallpaper. I found one after a bit of searching. Since it was such a good wallpaper (more accurately, perfect) I thought I share the link with everyone.

That was an obvious pun that many otakus in Japan noticed right off the bat....that and one of the seiyuus being Ueda Kana who plays the role of Fukuzawa Yumi.

I'd like to take a Marimite quiz. :) I will probably fail, but that's okay.

Not many people seem to be posting around here this season. :( I notice lots and lots of posts from last season. Have people lost interest so quickly?

I´m still here and the second season so far is very good.

Me playing Yumi :uhoh: :
But having a quiz with all this maramite experts here is a bit intimidating.
I just watch the anime...they know everything.

A Marimite quiz sounds good to me too... but like Bracken, my knowledge is limited to the anime episodes.

I'm still here too, and as interested in Marimite as ever. :) I think the second season got off to a great start -- and I'm eagerly anticipating the release of every new episode.

Uhm, I'm new to this anime but I would love to take a quiz ^_^
I've only been in mixed gender schools before, so its refreshing to know how it would be like in a all girls' school. Its not as rowdy in comparision, is that good or bad?

I really enjoy this anime, its doesn't have dramatic fighting scenes filled with action or a plot, but it manages not to be uninteresting at the same time.
But the episodes for the Spring season have been alittle slow I noticed, or I'm too impatient as always ^o^
The mini specials are wonderful and give the series a light hearted and extremely humorous side, a change from the usually serious show, and I find myself rewatching them again and again.

Do you mean that as me being the one that answers, or as me being the one giving out questions?

Here's a sample that I am certain several members of this board who reads Cobalt can answer:

What is the full maiden name of Yumi's mother, and full name of Yumi's father?

hint: The answer is in this month (August 2004) issue of Cobalt magazine, in Konno Oyuki's short story "Toshokan no Hon."

i think in real life, an all girls sch is a LOT more bitchy... but I digress....

actually i thought the original series started off a bit slower. the spring season's pace was much faster. but maybe that's just because I have been watching a lot of slow moving animes recently:P

oohhhhh... you asking the questions. sounds reasonable, but how many people would actually know the answer to "What is the full maiden name of Yumi's mother, and full name of Yumi's father?" >_< Especially if its in the Cobalt zasshi.

fuz_mind: I gotta agree, the 2nd season does seem to have a faster pace. More scenes in one ep!! w00t w00t But I do hope it has more purposeful/meaningful eps than the first season's rather silly set of eps.

ahhhhh.....

a lot of the series that I;m following at the moment are pretty slow in the releases. hmm maybe it's the exam period or something :)

strangely, even though s1's pace is a bit slower, I enjoyed it much better. S1 gives me this really calm and peaceful feel when I'm watching it.:)

I agree, maria-sama ga miteru gives me also a peaceful and calm feel.
I watch the show as an opportunity for escapism and I don´t want it to be overly realistic or with a very deep meaning.

I need to see more episodes of season 2 before I can have an substantiated opinion about the different paces of the two seasons.
