View Full Version : Maria-sama ga Miteru [Unfortunately SPOILERS Lurk Here]
I've watched the first episode of it and it looks pretty nice. It's a shoujo-ai( :) ) anime about an all girl school. It looks like we're going to have subs of more then one group for it since the first ep was released by A-Source and Lililicious and according to A-Keep's website it's also their new project.
Anyone else got his eye on this one?
My first impression:

Eek, more yuri.
I'll be skipping this one.
What happened to all the NORMAL shoujo anime??

Im waiting for A-Keep (I guess). The preview was interesting, though completely unrevealing as to any plot elements (or Im blind / stupid).
To me Maria-sama ga Miteru reminded a little like Oniisama E (one of the few animes that I hate) but I actually liked this one and even laughed couple of times. As long as this don't go too melodramatic, I will follow it.
My only wish is that there will be at least some fanservice, but it is not very likely that there will be...
I will also download Anime-Keep's version when it comes out.
I liked it. When I saw it reviewed on a site I knew that I didn't have to download the teaser. The one fansub I watched I enjoyed. I especially like how they had each members name twirl like the cross did ^^;; The OP and ED music very much reminded me of church. And gahhhh, they said those french things oh so fast that my head was spinning.
I already like Yumi out of all of them. Theres just something about her that pops out towards me. Sachiko's mentor personality I think is already showing through as well. Overall I was wishing I had a second episode to watch. I'll certainly will be looking forward to it.

I like the graphics very much! ^^ Now for the story I have to see more of it to tell if I like it or not :p
It was funny to hear the French terms ^^;
Yuri Yuri Yuri Yuri Yuri Yuri Yuri Yuri Yuri Yuri Yuri Yuri Yuri Yuri Yuri Yuri Yuri Yuri Yuri Yuri
it reminded me of The Skulls at first - like a secret society with this messed-up hierarchy. kind of gloomy as well - no laughing or smiling, church music, hardcore church nun stuff. but after getting all that rosa chinensis en bouton petite soeur stuff figured out, it seemed okay. i think i'll give this one a try.
and does anyone else think that yumi looks a lot like nina???
NoSanninWa

I didn't find it gloomy at all, just a little bit self-involved. Slow to start, but rather intriguing. My only problem is that there are sooo many characters to get to know. It looks like we are going to have at least 10 major characters and we are introduced to them all at once. Oh, my.
My first impression:
( ??? )huh?
Rosa chinensis en bouton petit soeur
Little sister of the Red Rose's bud
Rosa Chinensis = Red Rose
en bouton = budding.
petit soeur = little sister
Just remember:
Rosa Sinensis: Red rose.
Rosa Gigantea: White rose
Rosa Foetida: Yellow rose.
The "en bouton" is in training to be a rose's successor and the "petit soeur" is training to become the "en bouton".

Hey, yuri is rare. Take every opportunity to watch yuri.
In any case, shoujo anime is a good thing. Lets me divert from all the bishoujo (overload) anime recently.
Yeah. And I think I have a small crush on Sachiko's nose. It's just so big, sharp and pointy...
Uh, must lie down now ... :p
Little sister of the Red Rose's bud
Rosa Chinensis = Red Rose
en bouton = budding.
petit soeur = little sister
Sorry, I should've clarified.
First, on a totally off topic,
on your screen it seems to show: (???) huh?
if you'd had Japanese enabled, you would've seen an AA (I guess in English, it would be "smiley") of a guy saying "huh?"
Okay, back to the topic. I should've clarified that since I haven't read the novel before hand, I had no idea what this anime was going to be about. Therefore, I had no clue about how this anime was going to begin with...and in the first several minutes these Japanese schoolgirls were suddenly talking in French. It took me by a sudde surprise as I at first didn't understand what the heck they were speaking about due to their literal katakana translation of "roza kinenshisu an buuton puchi su-ru" (and you don't want to know the poorly katakana-pronounced English words that I hear at my workplace everyday).

These girls are VICIOUS in their tactics.
I love them already.
Interesting. I've been curious to see something like this (ie. the sort of thing Utena's not) for some time now, looks promising from the first episode.

Huh? I thought this anime is so much like Utena…
Why does Sachiko hate that president of student council of some boys’ school so much? Did she get dump by him? Are they going back together again?

Eeeek! What ever happend to spoiler tags?
At first I didn't think I´d like it, but it got better around 10 minutes, I´ll give this anime a few episodes to develop. But... it´s and all girls school! Where are the guys? The Ecchi! the sexy misunderstandings!? :)
anyways, what really got my attention here was their noses, they seemed differnt from all other anime I´ve seen.

Subtleties of the English language at work. Yes, it's very much like Utena, since what Utena does (in one way at least) is to model itself on this particular subgenre, and then start screwing around with it, like changing psychological duels into physical ones and so forth. In this case, "the sort of thing Utena's not" is actually more about their similarities than their differences, because it's a modification of the phrase "the sort of thing Utena is", which is the real point being made, but is inaccurate, because of how Utena treats the genre. So that phrase gets modified, to indicate understanding of this sort of thing being the "base model" for Utena, not its true complete nature.
anyways, what really got my attention here was their noses, they seemed differnt from all other anime I´ve seen.
Not different only BIGGER! Watch Miteru and something 80's style like Miyuki one after the other. The difference in nose styles freaks me out .

That information is listed on the official site for the anime. It's intended to be common knowledge as far as I'm concerned.
Oh, and that boy above Yumi is her younger brother. Again, this is also listed on that site.
I really don't know what I think so far. ^^;;; The graphics are very cute.. But it was so weird. At first, I thought it would be an anime about religion.. So I almost backed off. But then I realized there was a lot of.. "Yuri tension" o.o;; .. Since there's a lot of yaoi anime, I think it's interesting to see a yuri anime for once.
Yeah, it does seem similar to Utena at first glance... But to be honest.. ^^;; Even if it's a typical shoujo anime... After all the dating game anime and shonen anime that I've watched last session.. This should be a nice break. ^^;;
Seen ep1 and liked it, waiting for the ep2. At first I was confused with all the french words, watch it a second time and finally understood how the system thing worked I think lol. I do hope we get to see some girl-girl relationships :heh: :naughty:

Aw, quit whining. I, for one, am estactic to see a distinct lack of fanservice. Besides, the all-girl school setting is always fun--I love shoujo (and shounen) ai! <3
Like someone mentioned earlier, this reeks of Oniisama E... (Brother, Dear Brother). Unlike them, however, I enjoyed that series despite its age and melodramatic tone. I'm interested in seeing how similar the two series are.
The French throws me, though--I'm in Spanish II, so I have NO knowledge of the language. Gyah.

Hmm I think I might check this out just cause I'm out of things to try.
Was I the only one who thought this show was horrible? I had to strain to watch it, and it wasn't because part of the show was en français. I just thought the entire premise was horrible.
It doesn't have anything going for it, and by anything I mean no:
mystery, sci-fi, fantasy, love, comedy, action

Oh, I guess this show is the kind of very "subtle" type. If you are looking for the "obvious" things and get to the point right the way, then it is not for you.
I am glad that I sat throgh the first ep. I am now really looking forward the release of the 2nd ep. I am interested in, I don't know, everything? I wonder who is going to win the bet, what relatiohship between all those student council members is and Yumi, of course, what Yumi is going to do in this whole situation, etc.

There is already information on the web in English about this show. You might have saved time and effort by checking there before downloading the episode.

No mystery??? huh. I certainly have a lot of questions after seeing just one episode. I am sure you are mistaken about there being no love in this series as well. Maybe if you keep watching you will find some new things to watch for in a show.
I am really glad to see so much interest in this series. Although some people are kind of cross about the comparisons to Utena I must say that this series looks like it will inspire the kind of loyalty that Utena enjoyed. I hope to see some great fansites.
I enjoyed the relationships among the senior girls and the potential relationships with the new girls. There were details as to the inner nature of the characters which interested me. I look for great scenes more than anything in a show, and I loved the middle bit regarding Sachiko and Yumi.
I like the formality of the setting and the way it contrasts with the strong emotions of the characters. The visual style pays tribute to older anime stylings (like the title page and the painted look). The music was perfect.
It has low-key Yuri going for it.
Ummm.... can you explain what "low-key Yuri" is?
I'm actually shocked that to (some) of you people see this as "yuri." I would imagine this would be similar to a sister-sister relationship in what you guys call "sororities" (but then again, I can be wrong, so if I am, I apologize).

It's intended to have a subtext, and it's noticible.
I recommend you to visit some Japanese Mari-mite fansites. You'll notice that the majority of the fandom acknowledge the subtext.

Okay, I should've mentioned first that I personally don't understand "yuri" or "bara." Is same sex-relationships that "wrong" that it has to be generalized into "yuri" or "bara" category (I wouldn't say "wrong" but its sorta hard to explain...)? I guess this is the kind of personal thought that I dare to say in public in Japan as to risk social banishment. But, since this is a non-Japanese board, I am relieved at least I can freely express my thoughts.
So technically, when I watch anime that majority sees as being "yuri" or "bara" (i.e.: Shoujo Kakumei Utena, etc.) I tend to think otherwise. Perhaps I see same-sex romance as no difference from a romantic relationship btwn opposite sexes. Probably that is why I don't sense a "feel" that "mein gott! this is yuri!" or "oy vey! this is bara!" To me, its all a beautiful budding relationship.
But you do make a good point. I actually started reading the novel as this story seems interesting. However maybe it's my personal indifference to "seeing" what "constitutes yuri and/or bara" that I fail to recognize these subtexts. To me, its all a beautiful relationship that I wish to cheer them on.
I guess my paraphrasal here wasn't all too direct.

Labeling has always and will always exist.
Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad, sometimes it's just for utilitarian purposes.
Sometimes it's just casual, sometimes people make a big deal out of it, and sometimes people perceive other people as making a big deal out it.
But to answer your question: the "yuri labelling" probably comes from the considerable amount of Lily related imaginary.
Regardless, I hope this anime reaches at least 24 episodes, which seems likely judging from the sheer number of novels.

I will watch this show to enjoy the relationships. That's what I always want to see in anime. I share your point of view. But I think people learn it from life experience.
People who have same-sex relationships are aware that very few shows portray life the way they see it or live it. So it is very important to them to be able to point to a show like this.
This is true of some of the people who are fansubbing this series. And for these people it is OK that other people watch it for their own reasons. But they want the labels all the same.
Another thing about the labelling is that non-Japanese people who are interested in Japanese language and/or culture want to show that they know the Japanese names for things.

Oh, thank you. Now I am even more interested.
I wasn't very interested at first, because I thought it would be a boring anime meant to show girls how to behave properly, along with a load of religious crap... but I'm glad I watched it; there isn't much emphasis on religion, iirc it was supposed to be set in a period some time back where religion would have been a pretty large part of life.
However, I can identify with it well because I can understand their emotions pretty well. Hey, I am a girl... I also am in a girls' school; this kind of stuff does happen.
Hehe, so it's called Mari-mite for short. I keep thinking of Marmite... now why is that so? :P
I personally can't wait for the next ep. I love this kind of stuff (well hopefully it doesn't get too melodramatic...)

You can also use the words shounen-ai (boy / boy romance (not sex)) and shoujo-ai (girl / girl romance (not sex)).
If anything I would classify this series as shoujo-ai.... NOT yuri, at least not from what I can see from the first episode.

I didn't much care for this anime.
Fighting a battle while still staying in "proper manners" is something that appeals to women more than men. (In fact it's VERY ANNOYING to most men.) This story does a good job of portraying it, though.
Utena had similar ideas, but also had the SPICY hot erotica, swordfights, and a touch of humor. I seriously doubt if this anime will have the same amount of fans.

I didn't really like this series either. I don't really like any of the characters, so I don't care what happens to them. Still I didn't think it was horrible. It seemed well written, but it just didn't interest me. Maybe when a few more episodes are out I'll check back. It seems like it's going to be a slow anime season, so I'll probably have time for it.

Don't want to be offensive or anything, but I have never seen anyone not-getting Utena like this.
The whole message of the series was how girls should choose their own path without acting in a the way deemed proper to them by men. Utena was hardly what you could call a girl being "proper". She almost killed Mikage outside of the battlefield while giving him a good ass-whooping, dressed in a guy's uniform (instead of a girl's) and her closet was so full of mess it could shoot you six feet back when you opened it.
I have a feeling this anime is also going to touch upon what it does to someone when being subjecated to a set of rigid rules (the title seems to indicate that) instead of glorifying it.
well, in the preview of the 3rd ep, I think it mentions something that the president of student council of that boys' school, who is going to play the role of prince with Sachiko, is actually her fiancée. Is that true?
It’s highly possible that I got it wrong.
It's getting more and more interesting.

All I know is that she really hates him enough to avoid getting the part. I don't think he is her fiancee.
I dunno... based entirely on the 1st episode, I fail to see any real romantic tension. Like another poster said, the relationships are closer to a sorority than anything, with some underclassman hero-worship type insecurities tossed in.
Granted, if this was the late-night movie on cable TV, the all-girl catholic school would be a perfect setting for some T&A sexual-tension stuff. We've all got weaknesses for that kind of thing ;) but at this point (unless there's something in the manga that I don't know about) any assumptions of such goings on are just projection. Often times, one of the big things single-sex schools say they have going for them is the lack of sexual tension between students, allowing students to thrive accademically without the distractions of adolescents dealing with the opposite sex.
Hmm... ep. 2 was definetely more interesting than the first one, you can count this as a shoujo-ai series, but is there anything like that or just normal relationships...
Anyway I'm interested how the story is going to develop. Its clear that this series is not going to very fast. (slow pacing makes episodes seems longer than 20+ minutes)
Edit: Forget that to me that rose (in end scene) which isn't opened yet symbolises Yumis and Sachikos starting relationship. heh...
Just seen ep2 also. Yumi definitely has the hots for Sachiko. (sp) So this is definitely a shoujo-ai series. I'm liking it so far its a tad bit more interesting then the first episode. Its very interesting to see how all the girls interact with each other were their isn't the opposite sex around. I look forward to ep3. :)

The second episode is very eventful--just saw it. It's hardly similar to the first, and I didn't expect to like it as much as I did.
Highlight (spoiler): That piano scene had me swooning. This is such a sweet show. Yumi's face is more expressive too, na?
If you dropped off after watching the first episode, come back and see episode 2.
I loved that episode, I particularly enjoyed watching the Piano scene. It was also one of my favorite music pieces ^_^ Yumi obviously came to the conclusion of her feelings. Makes me wonder if anyone else knows whats going on with her.
I am looking forward to episode 3. Yumi is dancing with a boy, I wonder if she will be able to dance alright ^^;

Yumi is dancing with a boy??? I thought that “boy” was Rei, the stand-in prince, because Sachiko is dancing with that president of student council of some boys’ school in ep. 3. But Yumi needs practice anyway, in case she loses the bet, hehe.
Like I said, this is getting more and more interesting, and I love piano. I am just grateful that someone fansub this series and fast!

^_^ just finished watching the second episode, what a treat... I really enjoy the storytelling. Turning things around in the last scene was an impressive way to frame the episode. It heightened the earlier scenes with Sachiko and Yumi.
The show has a nice crisp style to it - the visual designs are very efficient, the scenery is elegant and the sound is uncluttered. There's a lot of space for the characters to be in.
Finally got the time to sit through the first 2 episodes. I read the website and watched the preview and I thought I will like this show and I do after the first episode. The student council and the sister relationship maybe confusing at first without reading the novel or the brief introduction on the website, but the narration in episode 1 did a pretty good job in explaining the basics. The order of the scenes in the first episode was a bit messy and I thought it can be done better. I had to watch the episode again to re-assemble the pieces and to understand the order of the events. Love to watch more and see how Sachiko and Yumi act and feel towards each other and how they may change throughtout the story. I do feel Yumi is quite out of place among the student council members since she's the only one who would show her true feeling. Everyone else probably have their own agenda and can put up a mask masterfully to deal with other people. Let's see how that works out. I think that would be the most interesting thing to see in this show. :)

Well, yes, if you're going to make that distinction, then you would be correct.

OMG I've been eagerly anticipating this series for like, forever. Must DL!
I enjoyed how in the first scene of the first episode, Yumi's expression showed that even though at the end Sachiko chose Yumi, Yumi still wasn't sure if she would accept Sachiko's rosary. Or was she just surprised yet again... Hmmm.
It is nice to see writers willing to create complex relationships that are not obvious and can develop in many ways. I'm looking forward to the next episodes.

Good episode. My only complaint is a certain scene took place off screen.
Yumi definitely likes Sachiko. It's more than just "akogare" / adoration.
Sei (Rosa Gigantea) gives out loud vibes as well. She needs to take a class on sexual harassment awareness.
Finally, if you paid attention to the title of this episode, you'll know how things will end. As Youko (Rosa Chinesis) put it, things are a lot more interesting with Fukuzawa Yumi
The sub Ep 3 is out. can't wait!!!!!!

Ah, the costumes... the moonlight... the roses... I just wish the dance scene in episode 3 was the tiniest bit longer...
I am noticing how good the voice acting is, and how easily the characters are expanding. The music isn't hammy or precious either.
So many shows lately seem to frantically sell themselves. This one is so much more inviting in the way it simply shares the story with the viewer.

Lots of drama in Episode 3!
Marimite is developing along Utena lines in terms of the subtle approach of the sexual aspects, in my opinion. Some situations between Yumi and Sei (ep.3) and Rei (ep.2) certainly imply strong affection at the least.
Case in point for Episode 3:At the beginning of episode is the following scene:
<in response to why she chose Shimako>
Sei: That would be my answer as Rosa Gigantia.
Sei: But on a personal level, I have different reasons. And those are a secret.
Sei: Now that I think about it, Shimako just might be envious of you.
Yumi: Not again! Why did the conversation just jump to that?
Sei: That's because...
<Sei gets up and embraces Yuki across her chest from behind in an intimate manner>
Sei: I want to see Yumi-chan's different cute expressions. Now, to me... that carried some sexual subtext, ne? She does the same thing later in the episode during the Cinderella practice.
I'm enjoying this show a lot. While I loved Utena, the characters' interpersonal relationships often took a back seat to the plot of the Revolution and the duels. In Marimite, it seems so far relationships and character development are the focus of the show. =)
I just watched episode 3 "raw"

Good episode. My only complaint is a certain scene took place off screen.
Yumi definitely likes Sachiko. It's more than just "akogare" / adoration.
Sei (Rosa Gigantea) gives out loud vibes as well. She needs to take a class on sexual harassment awareness.
Finally, if you paid attention to the title of this episode, you'll know how things will end. As Youko (Rosa Chinesis) put it, things are a lot more interesting with Fukuzawa Yumi
If Yumi likes Sachiko, wouldn’t she be heart-broken when she realized that Sachiko is in love with her cousin/fiancé? She doesn’t seem to be upset about it.
I can see the affection between Yumi and Sen (Rosa Gigantea). I think it’s one-sided from Sen to Yumi. I really don’t think that Rei has any feelings, except friendship, for Yumi or Sachiko, nor Yumi/Sachiko to Rei.
Isn’t that weird to be married to your cousin or just in love with them, in 21st century anyway?

She looked a bit upset to me when, -gah I forgot his name- he tried to kiss Sachiko. Yumi was on the verge of crying from my point of view. And then the garden house scene her eyes change when Sachiko mention her love for her cousin.
----
Anywhooo, that was another excellent episode. Great character development for all of the characters. Rosa Gigantea is starting to scare me in the funny way, pooor Yumi ^^; I want the next episode already. I also want a wallpaper of marimite :P

Yumi was genuinely horrified when Sachiko spilled the beans regarding Kashiwagi, and she looked cute while doing that I might add.
Sachiko's situation with Kashiwagi parallel hers in a way. Yumi doesn't want a bond just for the sake of formality. She wants more.
The council should be less morose now that mood maker Yumi has joined their ranks.
Oh, did you see the next episode preview? Sei had her arm in Yumi's uniform? What's up with that!?
Although, she'll probably come up with an excuse, something along the lines of "I just wanted to check your rosary" or what not.

I noticed that interesting bit from the ep.4 preview also. Considering how early in the series Sei's "questionable" character is developing, I imagine we'll see more implied shoujo-ai/yuri -type material. Plus, a lot of the Marimite fansites contain fanarts of Sei and Yumi together in similar fashion.
Does anyone know if the manga is going to be picked up by a trans/scanlation group? (Or even better... US licensed) As we all know, the manga is usually richer in story and chara development than the anime...
Come to think about it, Yumi does seem to be very “fond” of Sachiko. You all convinced me. :)
On the other hand, Sachiko’s feelings toward Yumi is not so clear at this point. I surely would like to know how she feels about Yumi. But again, I don’t think even Sachiko herself realizes that just yet. She seems to treat Yumi only as a “soeur.” But sometimes she also seems to think of her more than just a soeur. For example, the jealousy she expresses when she walks into the room while Sen (Rosa Gigantea) was…hugging (?) Yumi. I mean, even Sen notices that (“That Sachiko is always holding on to you.”). And of course, Sachiko looks for Yumi in that gingko trees place behind the school buildings even though she hates all those things. Like Shimako says, she was surprised that Sachiko would go there to find Yumi. Really complicated.
Is Rosa Gigantea hitting on Yumi just for fun or is there something more? Among all these characters, I like Rosa Gigantea best so far. She is funny, smart (naughty?), good looking (all of them are pretty anyway) and by far, the only one in that Yamayurikai (the student council) who is not always on her best behavior.

It's a show about two (or more?) girls exploring their relationship.
It is meant to be complex, not to mention that Yumi and Sachiko's are merely starting.
Rosa Gigantea's name is SEI. If you can read the kanji it actually means "saint" or "holy"

kimi ga nozomu eien (ishida azusa) is probably where i remember her from. quite magnetic ... a bit cracked. very different from the winsome, angelic voice of haruka.
edit: here rather appropriate because of sachiko's sisterly role.

Yeah!!! I second that.
The voice acting for Sei (Rosa Gigantea) is great! She sounds so cute in those lines in ep 2.
Is she having a relationship with Shimako? Judgin from her answer to Yumi about why she chose Shimako as her petit soeur, there is something going on between Shimako and Rosa Gigantea.
Poor Yumi, Sachiko is in love with her cousin and Rosa Gigantea is not available.
Still have hope for Sachiko and Yumi.
sei's voice reminds me of megumi's (tenshi na konamaiki) voice.

I like the series alot, and the change of tone it has from most of the anime's I've seen the last new months. Thinking about this anime too sexually seems a little bit shallow...

I'll agree that it is shallow to think of this anime purely in sexually charged innuendo. There's a lot going on here. On the other hand, you have to keep those undertones in mind because there is some of that going on as well.
BTW please ask your other questions in the appropriate forums. I don't want this thread to get distracted from its purpose by answering questions that are off topic. (In fact if you search you are bound to find the answers to your questions. At least the first one has multiple threads already. I'm not sure about the second because I don't watch that show, but it does have the distinction of possessing its own forum.)

Poor Yumi, Sachiko is in love with her cousin and Rosa Gigantea is not available.
Huh, I didn't get the impression Sachiko was in love with her cousin... Yumi made an assumption, but Sachiko didn't really confirm or deny it. Her shock could be from Yumi making such a statement, and her failure to deny from some complex reaction including despair about the situation she's been trapped into by her parents and her cousin. Maybe I'm wrong or wishful thinking.

I think Sachiko does love her cousin and that's why Yumi understands her feeling since she was in that position in episode 1. Yumi didn't want to be Sachiko's petite soeur since she knows at that time, Sachiko didn't really know her and like her. She felt it would hurt too much if it's a one-way affection. Think about it, Sachiko's arranged marriage is like she and Yumi in the first episode. Sachiko must have realized that at that time she and Yumi were in the same situation.

I'm not sure if Sachiko loves him or not. The scene was left deliberately ambiguous, IMHO. She could have been quiet because Yumi's assumption was the truth or because she realised now why Yumi was refusing her (i.e., Yumi was projecting her own situation onto Sachiko's). Or it could have been a combo of both. After all, she neither denied it or confirmed it.
At the moment, I lean towards her not loving him, especially with her feelings about the men in her life and watching how he behaved towards her and her reactions towards him. Of course, I'm rooting for Sachiko and Yumi, so that may make me a bit biased. ;)

I've read a lot of shoujo.
As of now, Mari-mite seems to be gearing towards the "acquired love" vs "romantic love" approach.
Sachiko's growing relationship with Yumi represents the former, and hers with Suguru represents the latter.
It's quite a popular set up. In fact, last year's heavy hitter "Kimi ga Nozomu Eien" utilized this setting as well.
Of course, being Mari-mite, the definition of love is multi layered and complex, as with most of the things in this series.
...the focus of Mari-mite is a heartwarming relationship between two people...it's considered somewhat to be an "iyashi-kei" (aesthetic) anime which I desperately need to get away from the harsh realities of this world.

I have heard about that but I seriously doubt that the anime will take it that far. After all, the anime is being broadcasting all over Japan and do they really want to jeopardize this series with a topic like that?
I am rooting for Yumi and Sachiko; but in reality, most anime goes for the popular scheme; like Sachiko would end up with a guy, if not her cousin, who would love her back. That’s how her “hatred toward men” is cured.
On the other hand, I really don’t think that Sachiko hates men. I think this is just a mask she has put on to cover the fact that she loves her cousin, who doesn’t love her, because of the reason that has been pointed out by Yumi.

After all, the anime is being broadcasting all over Japan and do they really want to jeopardize this series with a topic like that? Homosexuality? Yeah, hopefully.
As you said, the real tension is Yuri-Sachiko; Sei is great too, very funny. If the writers ignore that completely, these romances may not qualify as fanservice; but it isn't much better. There's no point if it's not a serious consideration.
I'm not very familiar with anime or Japan--not sure why the subject would jeopardize it. Besides, anyone literate enough to put out so many good novels, if they are good novels, is probably "progressive" enough not to hold back on this sort of thing. Right now, there's no reason not to expect a Sachiko-Yuri courtship--counting only the series of course.
As for me, I hardly even notice anymore. Adoration-styled J-romance is all the same anyway: girl-girl, boy-boy, girl-boy.
yuri and now yaoi a must miss for me Not sure what you mean. He is the only male character in the series so far--and the spoiler isn't even confirmed. Usually yaoi takes two characters, so.

I just don't understand how people ditch this series by branding it yuri and now yaoi? I like this series because the relationships between the main casts are intriguing and I'd very like to see how it goes. Scenes of affections are dealt elegantly. I can't see why not liking this series just because it's about girl and girl relationships?
Well, maybe because I never understand how Naruto can be so popular......

To some people, homosexuality IS wrong. As for me, I really don't care either way, as long as no one is hurt. There's also incest in this anime too...
Anyways, back on topic. My interest on this anime was aroused enough for me to watch them. After 3 episodes, I'll say this though: I neither like it nor dislike it. The premise is interesting, but it's a little too dialogue heavy for me. Nevertheless, I'm curious how this Suguru/Sachiko/Yumi triangle would turn out. I love that character Rosa Gigantea (is it?), and how she likes to fool around with Yumi...
There's also incest in this anime too...
It is very interesing that there are differences in countries that define "incestous relations." Here in Japan, first cousin relationships are not considered to be incestuous, and is in fact, legal.

Oh yeah, themes dealing with homosexuality (both male and female) and incest really hurt Utena, didn't it? ;) Seriously, assuming the spoiler is true for the anime as well, I can't se that they'd avoid it out of prudishness. They might avoid it to simplify the plot or some other reason, but I doubt it will be to censor it, as long as it isn't graphic. And Marimite doesn't seem like it will show anything too graphic, at least with the feel of the series so far.
Slightly changing the topic, does anyone know the date the first novel was published? I'm just curious if it predates Utena or not, especially if the rose garden is in the novel as well. Roses are a pretty common symbol in anime, especially shoujo, so I don't think those themselves have to come from Utena, but the rose garden is just too similar.

The first novel came out Apr. 1998.
After reading the first volume of novel and rewatching episode 3, I found one mis-translated line that implies what I said in the spoiler.
When Rosa Gigantea and Yumi heard Sachiko's scream:
Rosa Gigantea: "and I thought he would never lay a hand on Sachiko..."
Yumi: "Eh?"
Rosa Gigantea: "I know because we are of the same kind..."
I would strongly suggest who can understand japanese and like this show should read the novels. There is so much more in the novel that can't be put into anime because of the time limit. Manga is a bit different from anime and novel though and I found it lacklusting. I might try to read a few more chapters of manga but I think I'll stick to the novels for now.

Well, that line is very ambiguous and could be interpreted in several different ways. I took it to mean that he would never lay a hand on Sachiko because of their blood relationship, but maybe that's too much of a Western view? Also Sei's sexuality is never overtly mentioned (in the anime at least)--we don't know if she is straight, bi, gay, or something in between.
Ep 4 was interesting--not exactly what I had expected of Rei and Yoshino's relationship, although it certainly explains their closeness.
Also, where did you purchase the novels and how much were they?

You are right. It's not very clear from just the anime. But Rosa Gigantea did not know Sachiko and Suguru are cousins at that time and usually people like Sei and Suguru can easily identify each other even they don't say anything about it. It's very clear in the novel though since Suguru admitted to Sachiko already when Sachiko first entered high school.

The Sei stuff might be overhyped. Yes Sei obviously likes playing with Yumi, but remember that in ep 4's preview, it looked like Sei was sticking her hand down Yumi's shirt to do bad things. In the actual ep, she was only trying to get the rosary. Why they have these kind of teasers in a GIRLS' anime is beyond me. But it's still good!

So in other words, this anime does not have the same intended audience as the shoujo manga? Same thing happened with Fruits Basket after all (I don't know its timeslot, but the anime was more popular with boys than with girls).
After watching ep 4, why is that the whole campus is influenced by Rei and Yoshino splitting up so much!? Aside from the cliché (that’s none of your business), I just don’t understand why the whole school is being shaken up by this incident. Not that I don’t care, but they are cousins; they grew up together, live next door to each other, and are each other’s best friends (or more than that?). So this is just a minor conflict between them, I would say.
But still, it really is not clear why Yoshino is so mad at Rei, just because Rei is being overprotective?? And Rei being so upset by this break-up, surely Yoshino still loves Rei, no matter she is her soeur or not.
Another thing, don’t understand why Sachiko doesn’t want people to know that she gave Yumi her rosary, eventually and officially. The Roses are going to find out for sure. Come on, the entire school is dying to know the real story. She really should have just told the Roses so that she and Yumi did not have to go through that trouble.
So this is just a minor conflict between them, I would say.

I think it's a mix between disappointment about the whole soeur thing (mainly because it didn't mean anything special for her like it was for Yumi), and on the other side it's also true care about Rei, since she was neglecting herself (like skipping kendo training, etc.) just to walk Yoshino home.

<<speculating, having not read the manga>>
perhaps yoshino is reevaluating the meaning of the soeur system... i.e. because she is rei's cousin, that she realizes that the bond between them has not developed into a privledged sisterhood (as it seems Yumi feels towards Sachiko) and that she wants to return to a more normal relationship between them?
Or is she in love with Yumi too? hahaha kidding ^^
Why the breakup of Rei and Yoshino is a big deal? Because they are part of the rose family. They are the stars of the whole school and are symbolic figures on campus. On top of that, they were just voted as the best soeur! It's a shock to many of the students who admired them and many will think, well, even the best soeur broke up, why can't they? If you think it as the interaction between stars and fans, you might understand it a bit more.
And for the reason why Yushino broke up with Rei? Well, that's the next episode is for. ;)
That newspaper girl's bangs are annoying me.
They will just get more annoying. heh.

I dunno. Most people predicted that she did intend to bring out Yumi's rosary.................. among other things. ;p
But really, she should respect Yumi's personal space.
Edit. Anyway, a decent episode which is obviously a set up for things to come.
Sachiko and Yumi's err... "newlywed" behaviour unnerves Rei, Yoshino "divorces" from Rei, Eriko spaces out, and Youko does a Gendo Ikari impression.

I thought episode 4 was interesting in that it took the emphasis off Sachiko and Yumi. The troubles between Rei and Yoshino were not overplayed in themselves. The reaction to them seemed a little over the top, but it did open out the show a little - the school itself is now more than just a place for the rose family to play out its little dramas. Whatever is really at stake in the story is going to be revealed in the next episode or so, and this episode set that up.
They will just get more annoying. heh.

I recently asked Nosanninwa about this issue before here's what he said:
People are allowed to link to unlicensed anime on other sites even if there is licensed anime on that site. (Some of the sites we link to on our own page contain licensed anime despite our new hot-linking policy.) As long as a licensed anime is not discussed as the purpose of the link, it is allowable.
It appears lanimoo isn't mentioning about any licensed anime so shes allowed to post that link but maybe directly linking to the torrent might be a better idea. It's all up too you.
P.S. Nosanninwa, I used one of your post as an example I hope u don't mind.

Yeah, this actually is the only show I'm following this season (plus some other series from previous seasons). Anime is quite well done but it would be much better with a length of 26 episodes instead of 13 episodes.
I got the feeling that not many people are watching this show. Maybe it's really too girl-oriented?

I think there is no chinese version of novel and manga so far. The manga has just started and chap.7 just concluded the first novel (anime ep.1-3). Maybe some taiwanese publisher will pick it up later after the first volume of manga released in Japan later this month. Right now lililicious is translating the manga, so I heard. You can wait for their releases.
Most recent novel is volume 16 and it's not even at half point of Yumi's second year. My guess is it would be concluded after Sachiko graduates but that seems to be quite some time out. Oh, by the way, volume 8 of the novel concluded Yumi's first year and that would probably where the anime ends this season.

Where does is it say that Mari-mite is going to be 13 episodes long? I can't find anything referring to this in both official sites.
That being said, I agree the series first season will end at either the Valentine's day arc or the graduation day arc.
A 2nd season should follow if the first one is popular enough, and I hope it will be. I want to see Noriko animated.
Although, considering its late hours, I'm starting to wonder if they intend to target a broad audience or not.

It's kind of a concensus from what I read on a chinese forum. I'm not sure where they got that info from. Maybe from some ACG magazines, maybe from japanese boards. But based on the progress so far, it's clearly a one quarter show, either 12 episodes or 13.

Ends at Valentine's day would be unsatisfying, at least for me. It would make it difficult to do a second season too unless they plan to animate the graduation arc as OVAs. I would really like to see a 2nd season too since that's where Yumi really starts to realize her inner self. Also, you get to see more of the bond between Sachiko and Yumi. I felt that Yumi's first year is just to build up the bones of the story, and the second year is the meat. But that also means that animating the story would be much harder since the key would be to bring out the conflictions and resolutions of Yumi's thoughts successfully. They didn't do it very well for the first arc (anime ep.1-3) in that they cut out a lot of monologues and dialogues that show the progression of what's on Yumi's mind. It's fine if you didn't read the novel. But I felt that the anime would be so much better if it has more time to develop and not just rush through scenes.

What?! 13 eps? Noooo ;_; From what I hear from everyone else regarding hte novels and all, it seems there's a lot going on and waiting to be explored, WHY 13 eps... I hope they don't start missing out important bits and making it too squeezy (like, at least according to others, how Chrno Crusade was treated)...
Could it be only 13 eps because of lack of production funds? ><

Name one new series this season that isn't 13 episodes.
Unless you have a powerful sponsor like Square Enix (Full Metal Alchemist), you'll be stuck with 13 episodes at most.
It's the economy.
I do believe that Mari-mite get a 2nd season eventually, though.

Uninhabited Planet SURVIVE.
Uninhabited Planet SURVIVE is last season anime (start in 2003)
If you can count what started in 2003 that means Full Metal Alchemist is also countable.
About this season 2004 anime there is Ghost In the Shell:2nd Season (26 eps
which is licensed and Daphne (24 eps)

To be honest I haven't a clue how long a television season is, or what it is. I kind of think of it as Winter-Spring-Summer-Fall if I have to think of it at all.
My mistake.

Sad but probably true. Another reason is probably that marimite is targeted at a smaller group of audience, unlike GITS or FMA. KgNE has a reason to be a midnight show, but the content of marimite so far should fit in the evening section quite well. I guess the only explanation of it being a midnight show is because it's really not a mainstream show. :(
But, enough of the complaint. Let's go and cheer on Sei instead. Sachiko is so cute when she's jealous. Go Sei-sama!

Daphne is slated for 13 episodes IIRC.
GITS has powerful foreign sponsors.
@lordwu
I believe you're correct. Mari-mite doesn't seem to be mainstream enough for day time showing despite the following behind its novels.
Do recall last year's Scrapped Princess? I was surprised to learn that it had lackluster ratings in Japan despite its strong Internet following and popular novel roots.
It seems the mainstream audience wants a shounen jump template anime.
As for Sei, I think she's getting more and more daring, but she's so much fun.

Well our Rei + Yoshino subplot wrapped up nicely in ep.5
What is up with the odd turn with Eriko at the end of the episode? Comic relief? More chances to make us laugh at Yumi's expressions?
Loved the kiss, but w/ Sachiko's warning will we see more of her flirtations?
I can't wait to see ep.6 after the interesting preview... does anyone have any predictions?
Also... is it just me, or is the show getting a bit more generous with loose-end comedy. Yumi's facial expressions have been increasingly lip-service to pointless humor, and the end of ep.5 was just way too random... perhaps a reach for a broader audience appeal/base? Ideas, ideas.
anyone know where I can find the manga books online... or know of any site with translated pages?

Student Body Elections. The Black Rose [snicker]. And Rosa Gigantea.

Well, it's not just for comic relief. Eriko's tooth problem is the explanation why Rei and Yoshino were left to deal with the problem themselves and that scene is to explain Eriko's absence during the two weeks.

Two reasons why you feel that. First, a lot of scenes were cut from the novel so you will feel it's too random. Second, the show tried to put the focus on Yumi and Sachiko even when these two episodes were really about Rei and Yoshino. It doesn't feel right when it's too emphasized on the Y+S pair. :)

It explained her absense, and the way she held her cheek that Yumi thought she had been slapped; it dealt with Rosa Foetida's character (discussed earlier by Yumi and Sei); and the Roses have a habit of forcing information out of Yumi, since it's so easy.

well, I have seen all of up to episode 5 yesterday and I'm really loving this show. I like the characters so far and the story seems to be building up on something. I like how the viewer is to assume that the story has or has not shoujo-ai elements. I also like how the story is very character-driven and how Yumi is the eyes of the Audience. I can't wait to see more and I'm really looking forward to episode 6 ^__^

About the end of ep.5...
The scene DOES explain how the situation unfolded in Eriko's absence and develop character. My puzzlement comes from the fact that the animators chose random humor to contrast a rather dramatic episode. Perhaps because I was expecting the toothache and then... well... not comedy =) Then again, I like it when a series surprises me ^^

It's very good but be warned that it is very shojo and has references of lesbianism in it.
Just watched episode 5, yea! Go go Sei-sama aka rosa gigantea!
But like someone mentioned earlier, I hope Sei continues to be "touchy feely" with Yumi, lol. It's sooo funny to see Sachiko Jealous....lol
Overall, I felt that the anime is moving along at a nice pace. We already get to know quite a bit about Yumi, sachiko, rosa foetida, yoshino and rei's personalities.
I can't wait to see rosa chinesis having some screen time, as well as more rosa gigantea! Pls ignore sachiko's warning ;) !
It's a pity that more people are not watching marimite. Admitedly, it does have some hints of shoujo-ai here and there, but it's not explicit. Rather, it's done in a very cute and kinda flirtatious way. And the story moves along at a nice pace too. Plus all the characters have their own different personalities. Based on what I have seen, I really can't wait for episode 6, let alone a second season...hehe

Neither do I. Actually, I don’t understand why Utena can be popular and was in evening schedule while Maria-sama ga Miteru, which has fewer controversial issues and less violence, is not popular and is on late night schedule.
But still, the scene between Sachiko, Sei, and Yumi is so funny. Sometimes they are like little kids fighting over their toys. “Maybe if you play with your own toy more, you wouldn’t have to steal mine!”
The relationship between Yoshino and Rei is really sweet. I thought there was something going on between Sei and Shimako, based on Sei’s comments when Yumi asked her whey she chose Shimako as her soeur. I guess I was wrong.

Sei once stated that she likes to fool around with Yumi not only because of Yumi's cute responses, but also the jealousy responses from Sachiko. The red rose family soeur has become Sei's best after-class entertainment. ;)

You are not. There is actually a very deep bond between Sei and Shimako. There is a reason why Shimako rejected Sachiko's proposal. I hope the story of how Sei and Shimako met can be animated but without the preceding tragic love story of Sei, the chance of it showing on TV is minimal.
Just a FYI. The first 3 episodes concludes the first novel. Episode 4-5 covers the second novel and they will skip the 3rd novel, which is about Sei's past love story, and go right into the 4th novel, Rosa Canina.

The show definitely picks up when Sei is around. I dont even think she is a lesbian. I just think she a playful troublemaker. I could be wrong though. I do think it's kind of weird that Yumi is suddenly everybody's confidante. I guess when someone show's their emotions on their face, you feel like you can open up and tell you emotions too. I want to see her hang with Sachiko more. Those moments are always the most intimate for me. They really do act like sisters.

That's right. There's no 2nd year student in white rose family. And the reason is because of what happened in the 3rd volume. Oh, and the Rosa Canina episode is strongly related to the fact that Rosa Gigantea en Bouton is a first year student too.

I think I need those novels.
Just thought you people might want to know that the group (lililicious) who is doing the fansub has now done translating the first chapter of the manga of Maria-sama ga Miteru. I don’t know if it’s against rule to post the link to their website. I am not advertising for them anyway. It’s available for download at their website or irc. I don’t know if they are going to continue this or not. But this is one way to check what’s missing in the anime-- since most people here can’t read the novel in Japanese-- and know what happened to Sei and Shimako’s past, if that part is ever in the manga, which I don’t know. Someone might want to confirm on that.

Manga has just started a few months ago and has only 8 chapters so far. Chapter 1 to 7 covers the first novel, and equals to the first 3 episodes of anime. It would be a while before it gets to the 3rd novel but I believe it will not skip the story like the anime did.
Manga is more detailed than anime and is a good way to fill in the blanks left by the anime. A good alternative if you can't read the novel. :)

Sachiko's jealously is hilariously funnier. Especially when she narrows her eyes..lol
I'm quite peeved to hear that the anime is skipping Rosa Gigantea's past... but I'm enormously glad to read the spoilers about her past in the form.
Would it be possible for someone who has read the novel 3 to elaborate a little on how Sei and Shimako met and how it ties in to Sei's preceding tragic love story?
I'm still not quite sure of the reasons for the deep bond between Sei and Shimako, and the anime will probably not show it as well...many thanks!

Okay, then please excuse my poor language, but:
Je ne sais pas le volume 8 jamais étant vendu.
De ma connaissance, c'était tout récemment que le "La vierge Marie vous regarde" a été arrangé en série sur "Margaret Comics."

lol thank you very much :-)
i will try to find again this message :-)
ho soooo sorry !!!!
the message was :
"Manga has just started a few months ago and has only 8 chapters so far. Chapter 1 to 7 covers the first novel, and equals to the first 3 episodes of anime. It would be a while before it gets to the 3rd novel but I believe it will not skip the story like the anime did."
chapter and manga are not the same !!! lol
so sorry (maybe, I wanted to read too quickly!)

I just watched the first 5 episodes. They were awesome. Yumi is so cute lol. I had a question. Yumi's older sister, sashita i think or something like that, what happened btw her and her fiance? The anime kinda left what happened out. For those who read the manga, what are the details? I mean why was she so much happier after talking to him. Loving someone and not having that person love you back is quite stressful.
Sachiko and her fiance? Manga spoilers ahead!
Sachiko's fiance is gay, and (eventually) into Yumi's brother Yuki! Yumi's brother seems to be straight, though...
Anyway, Sachiko isn't just angry at him because he doesn't love her back. She's angry at him because he's such a hypocrite, acting like he wants to romance her and as through she's being unreasonable by being leery of the match, when he doesn't even like girls. He's the one who really doesn't want them to get together, although he plays the part of the good son. She's afraid that she'll be trapped in some sexless marriage while the fiance carries on homosexual affairs.
Hope that clears things up. I really wish they'd address this in the anime. Sachiko's attitude makes a lot more sense once you know what the situation is.

I would like to know if this is true ???
Suburu realized that Sachiko is close to Yumi. it proposes to her that once married, she could sleep with the yumi's brother. thus, they would fill their duty of family, and Sachiko could in this manner have a yumi's baby.
i read it on net, and i thought it's really funny but suburu goes too far !!!

It's true that Suguru said something like that, but it's meant to be a joke based on the context when he said that. But maybe he really meant that, who knows.

thank you, actually the text i read doesn't talk about a joke. i'm relieved !! ^_^ but Sachiko has a great reason to be angry.
i really would like to know too : if
sachiko really loves suburu ? ... poor Yumi ...
and if you know the name of bgm in the end of episode 2, could you tell me ? (setsunai omoi, no ?) i wait for my order of the maria sama 's first ost, i wish this song is in.

I think the best way to understand this is to check the previous messages on this thread. We had this dicussion when that ep was first released and there was a lot of response.
Actually, so far, nobody knows for sure, for anime version at least. That's the impression I had from all the previous message surrounding this topic. Sachiko is serious type. No wonder she gets mad, even if it's a joke.
On the other hand, why is Sachiko mad?
Is she mad because her cousin, whose name is very difficult for me to remember, just said something that’s totally nonsense and improper or is she mad because why would she want Yumi’s baby?
If she is mad because of the silly comments about having Yumi’s baby, then, well, there is no hope for Yumi, in the sense that Sachiko would ever return her feelings.
But if Sachiko is mad just because of the nonsense but does not exclude, or particularly being mad at, the possibility of having Yumi’s baby thing, then that would a completely different story.
So, which one is it?

i thought she likes him... :-( but... it can change !!! ^_^ i'm optimist !
i wish, i wish Sachiko returns her feeling. i wish it since the first episode and especially the second.
if, in the novel, Sachiko ends up loving Yumi, perhaps the anime will not show it :-(
but if Sachiko doesn't love Yumi, so the first character (Yumi) will really suffer... what to do an anime where Yumi, who we like and follow, is not happy for ?
i wish a happy end for Yumi, it's just this ! lol
i thought the first "characters couples" that we follow is Sachiko and Yumi. so i don't understand. i saw Yumi ..... in a preview of ... ... and i would like to tell Sachiko that Yumi needs her ! This anime made me sad !
i don't understand Sachiko, not at all ; i hate her !!! but, in the other hands, i really like her. :-(
thank you, actually the text i read doesn't talk about a joke. i'm relieved !! ^_^ but Sachiko has a great reason to be angry.
Well, Sachiko didn't even know about that conversation. Only the Fukuzawa siblings know about it.

Scanlation of the manga has begun, details at lililicious (http://lililicious.cjb.net/).
Also there is a new thread in manga for the Marimite manga if anyone wants to discuss it.
if the creator(s) won't end the series with sachiko and yumi together, i hope that they would atleast pair up sei and yumi... or yumi and someone cool in lillian.... :-\
so far, sachiko has been acting pretty conservative with yumi. does anyone know if sachiko knows about yumi's feelings or not?

Are you kidding? The way that Yumi-chan's face is constantly in motion, EVERYONE knows about Yumi's feelings. Heck, I think even the Ginko tree knows about Yumi's feelings. I would also disagree about Sachiko being so conservative. "Fixing her scarf even when it doesn't need fixing." Sachiko goes out of her way to be close to Yumi-chan.

umm yeah... well what about the whole deal about her being inlove with suguru and all then? Sachiko is just acting like a typical older sister...

i'm agree with Lanimoo.
Sachiko acts like a sister. but i think Sachiko knows about Yumi's feelings : when Yumi dances with Rei... Sachiko is "jealous" (i don't know if it's jealousy) , so Yumi rejects Rei. and Sachiko looks at her leaving. So sachiko knows about it !!! I wonder what would have occurred if Sachiko had join Yumi, at this time... --> Sachiko probably would have listen Yumi crying in front of her friends.
I would like Yumi happy. I prefer Sachiko but if this is Sei, it's ok, but not another one !!! :D :D :D
Sei is so different from Sachiko : it is difficult to choose between these two girls lol
(i really really sorry for my bad english !!)
i'm sorry, i don't understand what NoSanninWa wants to say by : "Sachiko goes out of her way to be close to Yumi-chan. " I remember the scene of fixing (obviously!!!) but goes out of her way to be close ? (sorry, i'm french) NoSanninWa thinks that is a Sachiko's pretext in order to be close to Yumi ? I had never thought of that, but I think it is not false.
but now, we don't know well Sachiko :-( i wish for the end of anime.... :D
Ep 6 is out!!!! I would love to know about Sei's past and I surely hope that I can learn some from this ep!
By the way, Lanimoo, do you mind sharing where you got that image of Sei? It's lovely.

I made the avatar from sei's profile picture at http://www.gokigenyou.com/ and my sig was made from adding a different profile picture to the websites's top banner/border.. if you want one of a different character, i could make one for you
for those who are interested in reading the news/info on Marimite's official website, first go to http://babel.altavista.com put in www.gokigenyou.com and make it translate from japanese to english, you'll be able to keep up with the latest news, and promotions
Yup! For Valentine's Day, there are two promotions:
1. For Episode 6, if I translated correctly, a special "guest" would be speaking and you had to guess who this person was. Different broadcasts had different secret guests I believe... Anyone who can make sense of of this page (http://www.gokigenyou.com/news.htm), thank you.
2. WALLPAPERS! That's right, there are 3 different wallpapers of the 3 different Rose Families to be had. Download them at the three different sites featuring Maria-sama ga Miteru.
Rondo Robe (Yellow Rose Family - Yoshino, Rei) (http://www.geneon-ent.co.jp/rondorobe/valentine/wallpaper.html) - iirc, funding for the series.
Animate (White Rose Family - Shimako, Sei) (http://www.animate.tv/news/detail.php?id=atv040206a) - They broadcast Maria-sama ga Miteru.
Maria-sama ga Miteru's official page (Red Rose Family - Yumi, Sachiko, Youko) (http://www.gokigenyou.com/special.htm) - Gokigenyou.com , the official website.
I like the White Rose one. So I'm downloading it!

Now, for people who have wathced ep 6.
I don’t understand ep 6 at all.
First of all, Rosa Gigantea is sooo cold to her soeur, Shimako. I understand that you don’t push people into something they don’t want to and respect people’s opinions and feelings. But she not only just stands back and watches, but also sort of expresses her concerns to Shimako like, “this is your own decision, if it doesn’t turn out well, you will just have to accept it no matter what! I am not getting involved in your own doing.” But in the end, when Shimako wins the election and feels relived, I guess, Rosa Gigantea seems genuine cares for Shimako! What on earth is going on here!?!? :(
As for Rosa Canina and Rosa Gigantea, if Rosa Canina likes Rosa Gigantea for all these years-- well, they seem to know each other for a long time—why does she wait until the last moment to tell her? She will never win Rosa Gigantea this way. I don’t think Rosa Gigantea would just beark up with Shimako and make Rosa Canina her soeur instead even if Rosa Canina won the election. Isn’t that the reason why Rosa Canina runs the election?
Sachiko does act like a sister and sister only to Yumi. She says that she wants someone who supports her always; a petite soeur can do that. But Yumi cares for Sachiko more that just that, I believe. Poor Yumi, getting frustrated for not being able to help someone she loves.
At last but not least, Rei and Yoshino deserve “the best pair of soeur” award. :)

spoiler :-)
At the beginning, I thought like you but Sei, who always smiles and always makes jokes, became very serious ! So, she is nervous.
She thinks since the beginning that Shimako will win, she says to her at the end "then? it was easy to win " ! and Shimako answers "no" !
but i don't understand why she says it to Shimako before the election.
For Rosa Canina the election is the good occasion to approach Sei before leaving and express her feelings.
I'm agree with you about Sachiko and Yumi. I'm disappointed. but even if I regret it, Sachiko likes Yumi like a sister and it's not love. but i think, I hope Sachiko will fall in love with Yumi ... but ...
Yumi will suffer (preview of episode 07 shows us that Yumi will cry). Yumi will suffer much... perhaps Sachiko will see Yumi suffering from its own eyes.
Containing possible episode 6 spoiler. Don't read if you haven't watched episode 6...........
First of all, Rosa Gigantea is sooo cold to her soeur, Shimako.
It's a long story. They might seem to be far apart on the surface but they really are very close at heart. That is why when Rosa Canina told Shimako that she's willing to take her in as petite soeur once Rosa Gigantea gradutes, Shimako immediately turned it down since Sei is a very important existance for her. As of why Sei acted that way during the election, there are several reasons I believe. But I think the most important one is that she knows that she's going to graduate and can't look after Shimako any more. Shimako said it herself that she has no real motivation to stay in Yamayurikai once Sei graduates. Thus Sei goes to the extreme and try to let Shimako for once decides what she really wants to do on her own. Thus the refusal of Yumi's request of pursuading Shimako and also the talk before the speech. But note that she did tell Yumi that Yumi can go ahead and pursuade Shimako and actually hinted quite strongly that Yumi should do so. Sei was hoping that the friendship of Yumi and Shimako can become strongly enough to support Shimako once she graduates. As I said, there are other quite subtle reasons why the white rose soeur is like that, but it will probably require another essay to explain all that...:p
By the way, what I said is my interpretation of what I read in the novel. Other people may have different thoughts on this and I would really like to hear them.
As for Rosa Canina and Rosa Gigantea, if Rosa Canina likes Rosa Gigantea for all these years-- well, they seem to know each other for a long time—why does she wait until the last moment to tell her
Sei never noticed Shizuka before even Shizuka has admired Sei since the middle school (I think). And that was the main reason why Shizuka joined the election. She wants to get the attention from Sei before she leaves for Italy. Remember that after Shizuka talked to Yumi before the music room, Sei asked Yumi who was the student that she talked to? That's the first time that Sei learned about the existence of Shizuka Kanina.
Sachiko does act like a sister and sister only to Yumi. She says that she wants someone who supports her always; a petite soeur can do that. But Yumi cares for Sachiko more that just that, I believe. Poor Yumi, getting frustrated for not being able to help someone she loves.
The reason why Yumi was so frustrated is that she still doubts her ability of being Sachiko's petite soeur. She didn't have the same level of confidence as other Yamayurikai members and often thought that she's not good enough for Sachiko. And when she didn't know how to help Sachiko she began to hate herself for being so useless and became very depressed. You will notice that Yumi can be easily intimidated if she felt a little bit that Sachiko does not need her anymore throughout the whole anime and the reason is what I just stated. The situation becomes very bad in the beginning of Yumi's second year and she even considered returning her rosary. I'm not saying more about that but that was an very important event for Yumi. She grew a lot after that event and forged an unbreakable bond with Sachiko.
At last but not least, Rei and Yoshino deserve “the best pair of soeur” award. :)
They are more like husband and wife. Heh. And guess who is the husband? ;)

The second year event. The whole event was across two novels and the first novel ended on possibly the lowest point of Yumi's high school life. How cruel was that! Fortunately I got to read the next novel right away but I think I stayed up almost whole night just to see the conclusion of that arc. Definitely my favorite arc of the series.

Is anyone know if Rosa Canina will appear again in the anime ? (she says : i postponed it for two years " so she doesn't leave now, no ?)
Is anyone know if Rosa Canina will appear again in the anime ? (she says : i postponed it for two years " so she doesn't leave now, no ?)
I'm not fully sure, but I think Rosa Canina won't appear in the anime anyway. At the end of episode 6, rosa canina says that the reason she took part in the election was get the attention of Sei as she is leaving for Italy to study soon. I think rosa canina was supposed to leave for Italy 2 years ago, but she postponed it to now, because now's when Sei's going to graduate from the Lillian. So probably we won't see her, but she's a cool character. They would have made a cute couple...but I guess Shimako is still better with sei.... ;)
Anyway, at the end of the episodes, Sachiko was saying to yumi that they should let rosa gigantea do something sister-like in a while, by which she means comforting Shimako. It give me the feeling that seems that everyone has the opinion that Gosa Gigantea is not very sister-like and has a carefree attitude, which makes me wonder how she was chosen in the yamayurikai in the first place. It's quite obvious why Rosa Foetida and Rosa Chinesis were chosen, but sei....hrm...
Is it me, but does the difference in the feelings felt by Sachiko and Yumi get more obvious? Yumi obviously likes Sachiko very much, in the romantical sense, but Sachiko likes Yumi in a elderly sister way only. Poor Yumi....
The situation becomes very bad in the beginning of Yumi's second year and she even considered returning her rosary. I'm not saying more about that but that was an very important event for Yumi. She grew a lot after that event and forged an unbreakable bond with Sachiko.
argh........We definitely will not see this in the anime! :(:(:(
btw, the marimite novels are still ongoing rite, with the latest at volume 16?? Is there any indications that it is going to end soon or it is going to continue on for a while?
oh, and if yumi is in her second year, that means the present rosa chinesis, rosa foetida and rosa gigantea have graduated already. For those who have read the novels, do they still appear in the novels or is it once they graduate, they do not appear anymore already?
from what i'm hearing... i have a feeling the ending is going to break my heart.... i sure hope it doesn't -_-

Yes, the novel is currently at vol. 16 and is ongoing. The ending is still quite some time out and hell, Yumi hasn't found a petite soeur yet (although there are candidates already). And yes, the graduating Roses will appear in the novel after they graduate. Actually, you will get to see Sei-sama a lot. ;)

I have a feeling that the anime will end after the present Roses graduated.
There is not enough room for 13 episodes. The "Valentine Chocolate" story itself will take 2 episodes and we will only have 5 episodes left.

maybe, this anime will continue after the Roses' graduation !! :-) but i'm dreaming, i think... lol
it's possible that the 13 first episodes are a test in order to know if this serie is a success. and if it does, then more episodes would be broadcasted !!! ^_^
And yes, the graduating Roses will appear in the novel after they graduate. Actually, you will get to see Sei-sama a lot. ;)
Great! Sei is my favorite character! But I heard that she has a soeur-like friend (girlfriend?) in college? Really? What happen to Shimako? I know that she has a petite soeur as well.
from what i'm hearing... i have a feeling the ending is going to break my heart.... i sure hope it doesn't -_-

Is there any shoujo-ai anime/manga that has a happy ending? The possibility is, next to zero. But now novels too!? I thought because anime/manga was targeting on broad audience. But novels are not. Any shoujo-ai anime/manga/novels that have happy ending in the future will be the first.

me too :-(
but I remain optimistic
it's possible that Sei will end very happy ! i hope!
but i think Yumi and Sachiko don't feel the same thing (obviously), so the end is certainly not the end ... (second year is important for these two girls and we don't know if the anime will continue after the 13th episode)

Actually, I found the YamiBou ending kind of depressing...
I hear Parosu no Ken (Sword of Paros) has a happy ending...you can find the first chapter at shoujomagic.org 's IRC channel--be sure to also pick up the one shot Baku Ai/Boku Ai while you're there. Stellvia of the Universe has a happy ending, though the girls involved are very secondary characters (and I found the main character quite annoying). Utena movie... I think the series has a happy ending too. The manga HEN might have a happy ending; I can't remember.
I wish I knew more...
I heard Maria-sama ga Miteru is actually doing quite well in Japan (I can't confirm this myself though), so maybe we will see at least another 13 episodes. *crosses fingers*

Sorry, I have never read the novels—don’t know a word of Japanese. That was pure speculation, don’t mean to upset anyone.

The "happy" ending of YamBou is highly debatable. Just take a good look at YamBou thread at this forum and there are a lot of people who don’t consider that as “happy” ending. I was thinking about a concrete, more undisputable “happy” ending.

It is. You should've seen the amount of doujinshis and doujin games at the last Winter Comike.

well, I watched episode 6 and this series is getting more interesting. The story is moving along nicely and it has some surprises at the end. Definately can't wait for more and I hope they do continue past the planned 13 episodes. I love the character drama that is fueling it. lol XD

YamiBou has a happy ending (for me). According to the situation, i think this is the best way to end it. but i'm agree with you if you thought about a relation which is concretized. it's right, it doesn't.
the 6th episode of maria sama ga miteru is my favorite (for the moment! lol) because this anime gradually leads us to more adult and more honest relations between the characters. actually, i hope but i'm not sure.

kj may know better about this.
I read that New Type Magazine ranks it no 9 of the most popular anime. However NewType magazine is heavily biased to Gundam fans.
It is interesting to see a Catholic-theme story gains a popularity amongst japanese fans.

In Japan, we really don't care about religion. We are actually a population which we more closely relate to being pseudo-atheists. We call ourselves Buddhists when we die (we bury our dead in a Buddhist temple), we call ourselves Shintoists every New Years by visiting Shinto shrines for good luck, and (for some) when we marry. We aren't Christians, but we celebrate Chrismas and St. Valentine's Day (even though it is commercialized).
Most people here don't even know the difference between Protestants and Roman Catholicism. A very good example of this is the existence of a minister in "Chrno Crusade" in a [supposedly] Catholic Church.
Most Japanese have no sense in absurdity of a person who is a daughter of a Shintoist temple attending a Catholic school (Hino Rei from "Sailor Moon.")
Nor a daughter of a Buddhist temple attending Lillian Jogakuen - Toudou Shimako
We don't view Marimite as a "Catholic-themed story." How do people view this? As a romantic story that washes your heart from the crappy world we call reality. It is broadly defined into the "iyashi-kei" (aesthetic) genre. And in Japan, we have a view that "Catholic schools" are tied with "rich, pure, upper-class, elite" schools.
It is very hard to explain. But let's just say that otakus have stress in their lives, and they need something like "Marimite" to relieve their stress via a soothing and relaxing story.

my old school was a french catholic school but it was a little different from the Lillian's school. it should be admitted that many things in anime are true : the church in the school, the statue even if we didn't stop by, we didn't have the right to run, and the Lillian's school garden makes me feel nostalgia. the two things which change in fact it is the uniform, we didn't have it and several catholic schools in france are co-educational schools (good word for guys and girls school ?) lol
i'm totally agree with you about the religion. anime slackens us and we do not think any more of stresses and it is most significant.
Whatever the school where we go, whatever the received education, when we fall in love it is the heart which chooses and not the spirit or family ! :-)
and if your heart chooses a girl or a guy, it doesn't matter ; there are no rules :-)

I can't agree with you more!
Aside from that, my high school was a Catholic one as well, though coed. Actually, the school science programs are among top so that girls are actually minority. This is not to insult anyone, including myself; this is an old school with..... their "unspoken/unwritten rules (super out of date)?" For example, girls should never ever wear trousers. That makes them peasant-looking, if not low-class-labor-looking. I can relate to this series but maybe not as well as girls who attend all-girl school? I don't know. It doesn't matter. Still, I love this show.

What you say has no link with what I said before. Why don't you agree ? the school where I went is a little the same one as the Lillian's one in the anime. My school did not oblige us to carry of uniform.
then, forget the school, whatever you are, your heart chooses someone to love, and only it chooses someone. the others, catholic or not, do not have the right to judge you.
I really don't understand what you say about your school and the link with Lillian school. what do you mean ?

does someone see the 7th episode ? I don't understand it because it is raw. lol but i'm crying for Yumi :-( (even if i don't understand the situation). someone can explain ?
13 episodes ? I thought that it was 26 (see here (http://anidb.ath.cx/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=1297)) I thought it was 26 too. Also, being a silly reason, the URL of the page with the episode descriptions is called story01_26.html (http://www.tv-tokyo.co.jp/anime/mariasama/story01_26.html) :D

I think what I meant was:
I can't agree with you more! = I totally agree with you!

I think that I was only trying to say that my high school is sort of like this school in anime, having very rigid rules, proper behavior is highly praised etc. I can kind of understand how those girls in the anime feel. By the way, we indeed had to wear uniform.
Sorry for the confusion. But I am glad that people ask if they don't understand me; after all, if I don't even know what I do wrong, I will not be able to correct or imporve myself. :)

A good logic is that it is 13 episodes because there are only 7 volumes of DVDs that are going to be released here in Japan - with one episode on the first disc and two episodes each on the other six discs.

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh i'm sorry ! really sorry ! i'm french, so sometimes it's difficult. actually, my sister who speaks english veryyyyy well explained me and meanwhile you answered. lol
actually, i really like this forum, because french people don't think deeply of the anime. they only said : " it's cool, it's beautifull .... " pfff ! it's annoying ! I think people have their own ideas on an anime and it is pleasant to divide about it. that why i'm here :-) i didn't find french forum like this :-)
I'm really happy for tv tokyo page !!! but i'm thinking hard of these 19 weeks of waiting!!! lol it's cruel to wait !!!
EDIT : kj1980 : oh ! it's 13 finally. i'm disappointed :-(
Ne vous inquiétez pas. Il y a 16 volumes du roman en ce moment. Si l'exposition a assez de popularité, il y aura de fortes chances qu'elles auront une deuxième saison.
And no, I cannot actually speak French well either. The above statement is called "digging out your Japanese-French dictionary from the semester of French I took at university."

wahou !!!!!! wonderfull !!!!!! just "exposition" is wrong. in france, we name "anime" by "anime" and not "exposition" :-) "exposition" is a (it's hard to explain) it's a gallery of art works or gallery of cars which people visite.
You really speak better french than I speak english, sure !!! lol
i really hope for second season ! really ! i become crazy to wait for the next episode
Hmm, I haven't read the entire post, but, I saw earlier in this thread, a lot of people were classifying Mari-Mite as yuri, which it is not. Maria-sama ga Miteru has nothing to do with lesbians!
The artist for Mari-Mite and Fruits Basket are different... if you're talking about the originals/manga(novel). FB has more defined lines and well, more disproportion at parts. Mari-Mite's drawing often has more details but the lines aren't clearly defined as FBs. I don't know about the art director (of the anime(s)), I never pay attention to that...^^;
The original Maria-sama ga Miteru is published by "Cobalt Novels/Shuueisha" which targets young girls as audiences. But the warm cozy atmosphere and the image of pure elegant girls captured older (male) audiences also. It's widely seen in Comike, as someone pointed out earlier.
Mari-Mite doesn't have any magical or fantasy like things going on though. If there is anything magical, it's the orderliness of the school... there's no drugs, violence, or anything of that sort that trouble the "real" society here... so, enjoy the pureness? I guess.
And, well, I'm sort of disappointed in the anime. I guess this is the best an anime can do, but as with most novel-->movie scenario, the novel was better. Yumi was more comical, and well, there were deeper character insights in the novel. And, well, I liked the shifting PoV as the story progressed. When you read the first novel in the series you become so attached to the Yumi-Sachiko pair, it's disappointing to move on to the Yoshino-Rei couple, but the second one turns out to be equally or even greater. ..but it seems it will never be translated into English... well, I was thinking of starting a novel translation project... well, anyone already doing this..?
